During the season of giving, Carmen Pate (third from left) and mother Tracy Pate (third from right), pose with participants at the Dec.17 TuffLuv Toy Drive giveaway, held at the LuvStyle Beauty Lounge and Barber Blvd. in Markham’s Canterbury Mall. Inset: Thornwood teacher Della Mayes (center) receives meals for students and their families from Jewel in South Holland. At left is Fred Jakob, Store Manager and at right is Kim Bedore, a Chef Kitchen Manager for the store. _______________________________

By Patricia Muhammad Reaching out and helping others is not a difficult thing for Thornwood High School teachers like Della Mayes and Tracy Pate. Both are passionate about helping those in need. For them, it’s a labor of love. “My father was a giving person and his legacy of giving was passed down to me and his giving to others made me feel that I needed to do the same. I like to give back to the school and the community.” Mayes said. Mayes launched a giving initiative over three years ago when she searched for business owners in the South Holland area willing to donate food items to Thornwood’s disadvantaged students. Her efforts were amplified when Jewel Food Stores agreed to donate complete holiday meals to several Thornwood students and their families. “Jewel now calls us every year with dinners for the less fortunate, both at Christmas and Thanksgiving,” she said. Tracy Pate teamed up with her daughter Carmen Pate and son James Cobbins to host a Christmas toy giveaway held at LuvStyle Beauty Lounge and Barber Blvd. at Markham’s Cantebury Mall. The beauty salon is owned by Carmen Pate. At the Dec. 17 event, toys were distributed at the salon to more than 100 girls, ages 2-13. The girls received Barbie dolls, girls’ make-up, and a cool manicure. “My daughter has always been a giver and a doer,” Tracy Pate confidently says of her daughter. Just a few doors down, Cobbins, owner of TuffLuv Entertainment Company, distributed toys to more than 150 local boys at Barber Blvd. According to Cobbins, the boys were gifted with virtual reality glasses, fidget spinners, a football, and complimentary haircuts. Barber Blvd. is owned by Dwayne Jones.

Cobbins, like Pate and Mayes, enjoys the art of giving. “From the day that I launched the toy drive event on Facebook and Instagram until the day the event was held, I was excited,” he says. “It gave me a great feeling, though I feel like I can do more.” Mayes, who has taught at Thornwood for 9 years, also assists her students in finding employment opportunities. “I’m an advocate for our students,” she says. With her connection to Jewel in South Holland, Mayes has helped more than 20 Thornwood students get jobs at the store. “Students patronize local businesses, and those businesses need to hire students.” She stresses to the students: “Get your grades together and I can help you find work.” Mayes also encourages area business owners help underprivileged students at prom and graduation time. “For students who can’t afford to get their nails done, or don’t have the means to get a haircut for graduation, businesses kindly offer complimentary services.” Mayes is grateful to businesses like Pro Shop Nails, J.R. Barbershop, and Charm Cleaners who offers to clean students’ prom dresses for free. Mayes has lived in the South Holland area for more than 30 years. She is a School Board Member for District 150, and a Parent Coordinator at Thornwood High School. Mayes currently serves as a permanent Substitute teacher for Thornwood. Pate is a paraprofessional who has taught in District 205 for more than 19 years. The Christmas toys for the toy give-away event were purchased at Target, Wal-Mart and Amazon by Carmen Pate and James Cobbins. To learn more about next year’s toy giveaway, please email James Cobbins at goshowcasedirect@gmail.com.

Angel Stories ARLO KALLEMEYN When the Persian astrologers left, Joseph cashed in some of the exotic presents they’d left behind. He got a good deal on the frankincense, which was scarce and had legendary therapeutic value. He hid the gold bars in their baggage and began making plans to enlarge his workshop back home. He looked forward to teaching his son the trade. Then, in the middle of the night, Joseph got an emergency visit by an angel. “Get up right now,” the angel told him. “Pack up the family and leave within the hour. Head south on the road to Egypt. Your lives are in danger. Don’t ask questions. You’ll understand later.” Joseph was too dazed to protest. So, within an hour the young family found themselves traveling down a dark and unfamiliar road. Written by Harold Kallemeyn Brother of the Shopper Publisher and big fan of the Christmas story.

Rep. Jones hosts Campaign Kick-Off Rally, Seeks Re-Election in 29th District Calumet City, Ill- Earlier this week, sur-

rounded by almost 200 supporters, friends and family members, Rep. Thaddeus Jones (D-Calumet City) announced his intentions to win a Fifth Term as 29th District State Representative. Jones also announced the completion of his law degree from Loyola University School of Law. “I am excited about the direction of the 29th district,” Jones said. “Local businesses, residents and community leaders have shown an amazing desire to share input on how we can work together to improve our schools, neighborhoods and work together for families in our area. Now, more than ever, resiIllinois State Representative 29th District Thaddeus Jones with supporters. dents must get involved to fight against the hurtful policies of Bruce Rauner and Donald Trump. Together, we can roll back the high taxes, build stable neighborhoods and provide a first class education for students in our district.” Jones highlighted the new education-funding bill passed in Springfield as well as a end to the budget stalemate that gripped Springfield. “Although, I am not satisfied with the stalemate in Springfield, I am willing to work diligently with leaders at the capitol to bring back the resources we need.” As the vice-chairman of the Labor and Commerce Committee, chairman of the Community College Affordability Committee and a member the Appropriation Committees’ for Public Safety and Higher Education, Jones has worked to bring back nearly $38 million in state resources to local schools, municipalities and businesses. In Springfield, Jones has worked to implement fiscally responsible practices in the budget making process, support policies that help local employers create and retain good paying jobs, ensure that our schools receive the funding they need to meet children’s academic and extracurricular needs, and promote legislation that will effectively combat gang violence and keep communities safe. “What’s happening right now in our communities and across the state requires a unified response from legislators, community leaders and every day residents,” said Jones. “I have hosted several events to gather input from the community and I am committed to being a strong voice for the issues we decide as a community are important.” The upcoming primary election will be held on Tuesday - March 20, 2018, with early voting beginning on February 8, 2018. Jones has represented the 29th representative district since 2011. He is the founder and former President of the Jones Foundation and former 3rd Ward Alderman in Calumet City. He received a B.A. from Loyola University Chicago and recently completed his J.D. Degree from Loyola University School of Law. He lives in Calumet City with wife and two sons. How Can You Improve Your Financial Fitness This Year?

New legislation took effect on January 1, 2018 allowing 16- and 17-year-olds to register for the state’s First Person Consent Organ/Tissue Donor Registry when they receive their driver’s license or identification card. Illinois is now one of 47 states that have enacted this legislation. In 2016, more than 350,000 16- and 17-year-olds in Illinois were issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. “Thousands of Illinoisans are waiting for an organ,” says Secretary of State Jesse White. “Those who are waiting are someone’s mother, father, daughter or son. This new law is an important step in reducing the number of individuals on the waiting list.” Previously, an individual had to be at least 18 years old to join the First Person

BOB KRYGSHELD picked up too many similar investment vehicles, resulting in an over concentration, or “flabbiness,” that can work against you, especially when a market downturn affects the asset class in which you’re overloaded. So, you might be better off liquidating some of your near-duplicate investments, and using the proceeds to help broaden your investment mix. • Get proper rest. Many studies have shown that we need adequate rest to stay alert and healthy. If you look at your investment portfolio as a living entity—which, in a way, it is, as it certainly provides life to your goals and aspirations—then you can see that it, too, can be weakened by stress, like excessive trading. If you’re constantly buying and selling investments in an attempt to boost your returns, you may rack up hefty fees, commissions and taxes—and still not really get the results you wanted. Plus, if you’re frequently moving in and out of different investments, you’ll find it hard to follow a unified, long-term strategy. So, confine your trading to those moves that are really essential—and give your portfolio a rest. To enjoy your life fully, you’ll want to take care of your physical and financial health—and, as it turns out, you can make similar types of moves to help yourself in both areas. to ensure they approve of the donation. The parent or guardian will then have the opportunity to overturn the child’s decision. Once the 16- or 17-yearold turns 18, the decision to donate is considered legally binding without limitation. “Approximately 4,700 people are on the waiting list in Illinois and about 300 hundred people die each year waiting for an organ transplant,” said White. “One person can improve the quality of life for up to 25 people. Currently, 6.3 million Illinoisans are registered with the state’s registry.” Illinoisans can register with the Secretary of State’s Organ/Tissue Donor Registry at LifeGoesOn.com, by calling 1-800-210-2106, or by visiting their local Driver Services facility.

Those who join the registry will receive a letter of thanks from the Secretary of State’s office, and Secretary White encourages 16- and 17-year-olds to use this letter as a basis for discussing their choice with their parents. By joining the First Person Consent Organ/Tissue Donor Registry, 16- and 17-year-olds will be giving consent to donate their organs and tissue at the time of their death with only the single limitation that the procurement organizations (Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Network and Mid-America Transplant) must make a reasonable effort to contact a parent or guardian

Financial Advice Column

If one of your New Year’s resolutions is to get healthier, you may already be taking the necessary steps, but don’t forget about your financial fitness. Specifically, what can you do to ensure your investment situation is in good shape? Here are a few “healthy living” suggestions that may also apply to your investment portfolio: • Build endurance. Just as exercise can help build your endurance for the demands of a long life, a vigorous investment strategy can help you work toward your longterm goals, such as a comfortable retirement. In practical terms, this means you will need to own some investments with the potential to provide long-term growth. These are the investments that, ideally, you can hold on to for decades and eventually reap the benefits of capital appreciation. Of course, growth-oriented investments, such as most types of stocks, will rise and fall in value over the short term, and there’s no guarantee of profits, or even preserving principal. But if you choose wisely, and you’ve got the patience and discipline to hold on to your investments through the market’s ups and downs, you may well be rewarded. • Maintain an ideal “weight.” This can be challenging—as you know from the recently finished holiday season, it’s easy to put on a few extra pounds. And, just as inadvertently, your portfolio can tack on some unneeded weight, too, in the form of redundant investments. Over time, you may have

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Turn of Phrase: Jump on the Bandwagon, meaning to join a trend or idea after it is well established. In the days when a circus announced it’s arrival with a parade, a highly decorated wagon carried the circus band. Politicians on the campaign trail were inspired to use a bandwagon to attract a crowd. To “get on the bandwagon” meant to espouse the candidate’s platform; people waited to “jump on the bandwagon” until the candidate showed a likelihood of winning. Engagements, Weddings, Anniversaries, Births, Birthdays, and Military announcements are free and run in The Shopper each week. Pictures can be returned; include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Announcements are also accepted by e-mail at general@myshopper.biz. Deadline for all announcements is Friday at 4:00 p.m. for the following Wednesday’s issue. eternal life to all who would put their trust in His son Jesus. The gift includes adoption into God’s family, an abundant life here on earth and everlasting life (life without end) with God. Yet many neglect to receive and utilize God’s gift. They say things like, “I need to get right first,” or, “I’m not ready to give up my life yet,” or, “I’m too young, I’ll wait till I get older,” never realizing that they may not live to see the ‘occasion’ they speak of. Like Timothy, Christians neglect the gift of the Holy Spirit when they fail to rely on Him to accomplish God’s purpose for their life. It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to live out the gospel message; to love people who are unlovable; to forgive as God has forgiven us; to live a life of freedom in Christ instead of being tangled up and bound by the ills of society. If the New Year is to be better than the last year, we must begin it by receiving and utilizing God’s gift to us. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com. Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

ANNA M. CAISON One of three favorite passages of scripture that remind me of Christmas is found in First Timothy 4:14. Here, Paul tells young Timothy, “Do not neglect the gift that is in you.” The “gift” Paul spoke of was the endowment of the Holy Spirit that enabled Timothy to carry out the purposes of God for his life. Every year we celebrate the Christmas season by giving gifts to family and friends that we love and value. We spend considerable time in selecting gifts that we hope will bring pleasure and joy to the receiver. As a child I remember the gifts my grandmother received every year from my uncle. One year he bought her an electric carving knife. The next year an electric skillet, and the following years other kitchen appliances he thought would make life easier for her. But she was always saving them for special occasions. Grandma was like that about all of her gifts (clothes, jewelry, etc.) she deemed special. She died at age 89 having never used any of the things she was saving for a special occasion. Over 2000 years ago God gave the gift of

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are planning to buy a home in 2018. What are your suggestions to us as new home buyers? Answer: Ask yourselves these questions: 1. How Healthy Is My Credit Score? A mortgage can be one of the biggest financial obligations you’ll ever take on, so why add to that burden by paying a high interest rate? Fact: The lower your credit score, the higher your interest rate is likely to be. And that’s why it is important to boost that three-digit number as much as you can before you even get close to the borrowing stage. 2. Have I Accounted for All of the Costs of a Home? Your mortgage payment isn’t just your principal and interest; it also includes the taxes and insurance you’ll pay on your home. Add to that the cost of utilities, periodic repairs and maintenance. 3. Is My Job Secure? Landing a great new job and the pay raise that comes with it, doesn’t automatically elevate you to home-buyer status. Before committing to purchasing anything, consider how long you’ve been with your employer, what your future job prospects look like, and even what your company’s prospects look like. Then ask yourself this pointed question: How will I pay my mortgage if I lose my job?

4. Am I Committed to the Location? “Location, location, location—that phrase was coined for a reason. It’s one of the first things that buyers should be comfortable with when they begin a search for a home. But just because everyone’s clamoring to get into a new ZIP code, or your dream home happens to be located there, doesn’t mean that the neighborhood will necessarily be the right fit for you. So try “dating” the area you’re considering by dining at local restaurants, testing out commuting options, and exploring the area at different times of day. 5. How Long Do I Plan to Live in the Home? As with any investment you add to your portfolio, purchasing a home is something you should be committed to for the long haul. Many experts advise clients not to buy unless they plan to stay in their homes for at least five years. A home is usually a long-term investment. My 2018 Full Disclosures MIKE BUDER You may have noticed over the last 8 years that I sign off this weekly column not as Mike Buder Realtor or RE/MAX Agent, but Mike Buder “a local Christian Businessman.” I have been lectured by some that I should not sign off in such a way because it might offend some people. Lately it has been brought to my attention that some folks in my industry have attempted to use my Christian faith against me when competing for listings. It has been represented that they have said such things as— 1. “He does not work on Sundays.” 2. “He has younger children that he spends time with.” 3. “He will tell you to list your home at a lower price than I will list it for.” 4. “He will have a higher commission rate than I will charge you.” To all of these I say: “Guilty as charged.” You see, when I sign off this weekly column as “a local Christian Businessman,” this is not some #hashtag or promo title to get business; this is the core of who I am. We live in a culture that year after year is becoming more hostile toward the God of the Bible. Our society keeps shoving this kool-aid down our throats called political correctness. So, if you have been considering using my services then you should know upfront that I try to

live my life and conduct my business according to God’s word. 1. I strive not to conduct any business on Sundays (Exodus 20: 8-11). 2. I time-manage my weekly schedule to allow quality time to teach and enjoy the children that my wife and I have been blessed with (Deuteronomy 6: 6-7). 3. I will only be upfront and honest regarding the value and pricing options of your home (Ephesians 4:25). 4. I will also explain to sellers how broker compensation affects the sale-ability of their homes in today’s market (Romans 4: 4). The interesting thing about the folks that criticize the way I conduct my business is that not one of them has more experience, nor sold more homes, nor has more satisfied clients than myself. I don’t point this out to boast...because any gifts or wisdom that I possess came from God... and to Him be the glory.

Top 10 Word Usage Errors Nationally It has often been maintained that English has the largest vocabulary of any language. The English language has had a lot of opportunities to add words, as speakers of English were conquered, and subsequently conquered others. It’s no wonder English speakers confuse similar-sounding words, as well as words with similar meanings. According to a list created by the online learning platform NoRedInk.com, here are the top ten English word usage errors in the United States. 1. Lay (to put down) vs. Lie (to recline) When Bob almost dropped his book on the floor, his wife told him to lay it on the coffee table. Bob could hardly keep his eyes open, so he decided to lie down for a few minutes. 2. Discreet (prudent) vs. Discrete (separate) Arnold needed to call his wife, so he felt it would be more discreet to step into the hall. The nuclear physicists were searching for discrete particles. 3. Anyway (regardless) vs. Anyways (slang for regardless) Though Harv insisted he didn’t like champagne, he couldn’t afford it, anyway. Walt teased him: “Go ahead n drink beer. Yer too poor ta drink bubbly anyways.” 4. Among (several) vs. Between (two) Marlene searched for the calf among the cattle. Doris was forced to choose between her boyfriends. 5. Prejudice (bias) vs. Prejudiced (to be biased) Nick was the target of unfair prejudice. Bernadette had to admit she was prejudiced in favor of the Green party. 6. Everyday (routine) vs. Every day (each day) Leona’s aunt felt the occasion merited more than just an everyday hat. Mark visited the library every day after school. 7. Number (things that exist in individual form) vs. Amount (things that exist in mass form) A number of snowflakes settled on Phil’s hat. The amount of snow this winter was unprecedented. 8. Farther (literal distance) vs. Further (figurative distance) The farther Sid went, the more lost he became. Dena decided not to become further involved in the conflict. 9. Altogether (entirely) vs. All together (in a group) Despite his efforts, Constantine felt the situation was altogether hopeless. Christina felt the family should be all together when the will was read. 10. Fewer (things that exist in individual form) vs. Less (things that exist in mass form) Viola noticed her vines had fewer roses than last year. There was less water in Benny’s canteen than he thought. Now that you know the differences, you can make yourself annoying to family and friends by correcting them every time they misuse these words. RICHARD ZEKVELD A wise pastor once taught me the difference between ‘chronos time’ and ‘kairos time’. Chronos and kairos are both Greek words for time. Chronos shows up in our word chronology. It refers to the passing of seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years. It refers to turning the calendar on January 1, 2018. It is the little green mile marker on the interstate. Kairos is quite different. It refers to significant moments and events that impact your life and change history. If chronos is the little green mile marker, kairos is the memorable stop along the road, the significant conversation in the car, the traumatic accident en route. Kairos is the Greek word used in Mark 1:15, where Jesus says, “The kairos has come. The kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the good news.” In God’s wise plan, the moment Jesus began his ministry on earth was a significant moment. It was a

kairos moment that changed history. With the shouts of “Happy New Year,” a chronos moment came and went. We passed a green mile marker on our journey through life. Chronos moments like this provide great opportunities to stop and reflect on the kairos moments of the past year. And of our lives. It is an invitation to pause and reflect on the presence and purpose of God in those moments. Finally—and this was my wise pastor friend’s point—the discipline of doing ordinary ‘chronos time’ with God and others in relationships may not seem important. Or even very exciting. But this discipline lays a foundation for our ability to trust God in the kairos moments. It also lays the foundation for our ability to love, enjoy and be present with others in their kairos moments. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church

Charity of the month:

WOODROW WILCOX On November 16, 2017, I wrote a letter on behalf of a senior citizen client from Schererville who is the victim of slow and sloppy Medicare personnel. When our client switched from one insurance plan to another on January 1, 2017, Medicare failed to update her file. Our client gave Medicare over a month advance notice, too. It is now November and Medicare still has not corrected our client’s files. This slow and sloppy work by Medicare is common. In fact, it is one of the top five problems that I have repeatedly worked to resolve for our clients for almost 15 years. This insurance agency charges our clients NOTHING for helping them with this sort of insurance related problem. If an insurance agent or agency won’t help a client with such a problem, the senior would have to hire an attorney to help fix the mess. Why would any senior want to use an insurance agent or agency that is not willing to help the client as our insurance agency does? Following is the body of the letter that I sent for our client to a collection firm and its client. Our client brought us unpaid medical bills and asked us why her Medicare supplement insurance was not paying the bills. I

have worked with her for over three months to fix a problem that was caused entirely by Medicare. On October 25, 2017, I assisted our client in filing a complaint to our congressman about the inept and uncooperative attitude from Medicare to fix a problem that their personnel caused. Please, recall this bill from collections. Our client has received cooperation from her former secondary insurance and from her current secondary insurance to resolve the problem. It is Medicare that caused the problem, not the client/ patient. Please, refrain from any more collection efforts for at least sixty (60) days. I hope that by then, our efforts through the office of the local congressman will have produced positive results to get Medicare to correct its errors. Thank you.

CHRISTMAS EVE AT THE DEAN AND BETTY TRILLER CHEZ: Pictured here on Christmas Eve, December 24th, 2017 are Glenn Triller, Chris Frye, Steffie Triller Fry and Stella Grace Fry, 4 and Katharine Fr y, 18 mont hs. The Tr i l ler, MintonKut z, a nd Fr y fa m i lies gat her at t he Valparaiso residence each Christmas Eve to recollect the past year and anticipate the New Year. In the span of a few months from 2016 to 2017, Dean and Betty went from 1 grandchild (Stella Grace Fry) to five! Adam and Rachael Triller had Max, Christine and Todd Triller had t w ins Audrey and Charlotte, and Steffie and Chris had Katharine! A one-family population explosion, much to our delight! As always Dean and Betty cut down their own 16-foot evergreen at a local tree farm and hoisted it into their foyer by themselves! For larger trees on immediate past Christmasses, Todd and Adam had to help. The huge tree filled the whole house with that heavenly pine scent. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all! *** H ARRY MORTON OF CALUMET CIT Y SAYS HELLO : Locals remember Harr y as Harr y Morton Roof ing, a long time roofing contractor in Calumet City. Harry celebrated his 89th birthday on June 30, 2017 but he jokingly tells everyone he is only 78 according to his niece Shar yn Purtell. Harry was active in the Kiwanis Club, Lions and Calumet City Chamber of Commerce over the years. Harry now lives in a senior residence and is a very happy and active member taking part in most activities, sing-alongs, and with a decided penchant for ice cream at the ice cream socials the residence hosts twice a week. He loves to hear from old friends in Calumet City and thereabouts, so if you would like to, please drop him a card, letter or photo in care of his niece, Sharyn Purtell, 209 Northridge Avenue, Bolingbrook, Il 60440. Happy New Year Harry! ***

The event is one of the mayor’s favorite holiday gatherings each year. This year was even more spectacular than last with tents set up at the intersection of Wentworth and Pulaski for cider and popcorn, candy and hot chocolate, gummies and giveaways and a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Mayor Michelle also played hostess to Calumet City Senior Citizens with Christmas parties in each of their senior residences. Special guest entertainer was once again Elvis Tribute artist Dennis Stella. “I like to take this time of year to let the residents know how important they are to me,” noted the Mayor recently. “These parties are just a small way of doing that.” *** T H E C A LU M E T C I T Y H IS T OR IC A L S O C I E T Y H O S T S P O S T- H O L I D A Y LUNCHEON : Set for Sunday, Ja nua r y 14th 2018 at Steve’s Lounge in Chicago (Hegew isch) 13200 S.
