They are an unsung army, frontline soldiers for Facebook and YouTube. I’d never stopped to consider their vital work, until I read an article.* They aren’t the folks who make six-figure salaries. They don’t possess the high-level, marketable skills these companies seek and reward. But Facebook and YouTube would be far more degraded and grimy without them. They sift through reported posts flagged ‘inappropriate’. They are confronted, day after day, by disturbing images and messages so that we won’t be. The turnover rate is high. Some only make it to lunch their first day. Others stick it out, but pay a price in the trauma they carry home. Often their ‘counseling’ consists of commiserating with co-workers after an especially horrific post. Someday machines will replace them to do this ugly, vital work. Until then, we rely on these soldiers to defend us from sensory assault. I write this because I was moved by what
my eyes and envision myself splashing in the crystal river that John saw and wrote about. I then act as if I’m there! I begin jumping and splashing in the crystal river and worshiping God until the issues that brought me there are no longer weighing me down. With a refreshed spirit and a renewed mind, I can work through whatever difficulties I’m facing with faith, hope and victory. Some, reading this article, are probably laughing as did a few parishioners when I demonstrated this form of meditation from the pulpit. But I challenge you, the next time you find yourself backed into a wall of despair, close your eyes and with child-like faith imagine yourself splashing in the crystal river. Take a leaf from the tree of life and rub it over your face and begin worshiping the Lord. In His presence you will find the peace and tenacity to move forward in this life with victory. The scene outside my bedroom window reminds me of the glorious future God has for those who love Him. There are two trees parallel to each other. Between the two trees is a paved walkway that leads outside the apartment complex I live in. Each day that I go to my mailbox I take the path that runs between the two trees (tenant mailboxes are outside of each building). And with each return trip from the mailbox as I walk between the two trees I see a glimpse of what the Apostle John wrote about in Revelation 22:1-4. The paved walkway transforms into the crystal river that flows from the throne of God and the trees, with their overflowing branches, becomes the tree of life covered with lush green leaves for the healing of the nations. In that day, there will be no need for sunlight or lamps because darkness (physical and spiritual) will no longer exist because of the visible reigning presence of the LORD. There are days when the condition of the world becomes overbearing and I feel like I can’t take another day. I close

I read. I want others to know about these people and what they do for us every day. Next time you enjoy a post on YouTube or publish one on Facebook, offer up a prayer of thanks for these soldiers. And pray for them! I pray that their identity and security be in Jesus Christ, that he guard their hearts and minds, and that he provide for them resources to help them cope. We can also write notes of thanks and encouragement for them, care of Facebook and YouTube. While we’re at it, why not send a note to your local police force as well? Sometimes they, too, must view disturbing material to protect the innocent.

Turn of Phrase: Sink or Swim
Meaning succeed or fail, often with the implication that you are on your own. The phrase dates back at least to the 1500s; before that, it was said “float or sink,” at a time when few knew how to swim. Urgent Need for Blood Donations Continues Although January marks National Blood Donor Month, the blood supply continues to take a hit as Winter Storm Grayson hammers the Northeast. Frigid temperatures across Chicagoland have impacted the number of people who come out and give blood. This has put additional pressure on the nation’s blood supply,
especially for universal blood type O-negative and platelets, which has been depleted due to lower donor turnout over the holidays. Weather permitting, authorities are urging people to schedule a blood donation appointment. Giving blood not only helps those locally, it also impact the blood supply across the country.

Speaking Of Seniors
Dear President Trump WOODROW WILCOX Here is an open letter to President Trump about problems with Medicare that are hurting senior citizens all over America. If you like and agree with what I wrote, why not copy this article and send it other public officials? Or, send an extra copy to President Trump at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Wash., DC 20500. Dear President Trump, For almost 15 years, I have helped senior citizens fight mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. I have saved clients of the insurance agency where I work over two million dollars. There are many problems with the Medicare system. I’d like a chance to tell you and the Secretary of Health and Human Services about all the problems with Medicare that I have encountered over the years. But, with this letter, I just want to tell you about two major problems: government employees and government contractors are not performing their duties at a professional level. The federal government pays billions of dollars annually to government contractors to provide communication systems that work well. But, the communication systems break down often. When that happens, important data is lost. Often, this results in Medicare supplement insurance companies NOT getting notice and information about claims. When the claims are not paid to doctors, hospitals, or laboratories, the senior citizens get bills that they would not get if the Medicare communication systems worked well. The lack of reliable communication systems causes senior citizens to be wrongfully billed over a billion dollars per year. If no one helps the seniors to fix the bill problem, the seniors pay the bills and are financially hurt. The federal government pays billions of dollars annually to government employees or government contractors to process information to update senior citizen Medicare
files. The new information should be updated within a few days or a week. But, many of our clients have not had their files updated for three to nine months. One client did not get his file updated for almost nine years. That is irresponsible and unprofessional work from government employees and contractors who are making billions of dollars per year. In private business, such sloppy work behavior would get them fired. When the Medicare files are not updated quickly, the Medicare claims of senior citizens are messed up. The claims for secondary insurance payments never get delivered. Medical service providers send bills to seniors on Medicare because Medicare directed the claims to the wrong insurance company and never sent the claim to the correct, current insurance company of the senior. The result is that seniors get bills that they should not get. If no one helps the senior to correct the problem that was caused by Medicare, then the senior pays a bill that never should have been sent to the senior. I would like you to discipline government employees and contractors to raise the performance standards so that fewer senior citizens are bilked of money while government employees and contractors continue to make big bucks from the federal government. If you want to learn more about problems with Medicare so that you can help to protect senior citizens, contact me so that we can get together to discuss that. Sincerely, Woodrow Wilcox Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over two million dollars by correcting medical bills. He wrote the book Solving Medicare Problems (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox. com.

High School Students Kick Off Worldwide Robotics Competition
Last year’s competition was a blast— as indianafirst.org describes it, “It’s more than just robots. Part rock concert, part basketball championship, part NASCAR, and part Broadway—it’s the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”
_______________________________
The 2018 Annual FIRST® Robotics International Competition has begun! January 6, more than 85,000 high-school students worldwide participated in Kickoff, the start of the 2018 Robotics Challenge: FIRST Power-Up. Kickoff marks the beginning of the design and build season. Teams have the opportunity to meet at local Kickoff sites to compare notes, get ideas, make friends, find mentoring teams, learn the game, pick up the Kickoff Kit from the Kit of Parts, and get geared up for the exciting competition season. Students from Illinois, Indiana, and the world watched a live-feed from the headquarters of FIRST Robotics in Manchester, New Hampshire to find out the goal of this season’s competition. Each year a new game is introduced and teams have six weeks to design and build a robot, which will compete at local, regional and national events. There were four kickoff
events in Indiana where high school teams participated. Saturday, teams were shown the FIRST Power-Up game field and challenge details, and received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, control system components, construction materials, and a mix of additional automation components with limited instructions. From this assortment of materials, teams have six weeks to build a robot capable of completing the assigned task. IndianaFIRST was excited to have two new Kickoff locations for the 2018 season, made possible by support from the University of Indianapolis, the R.B. Annis School of Engineering, and FRC Team 1529 in addition to support from Bloomington High School South and FRC Team 3494. The competition aims to inspire students to be science and technology leaders, while emphasizing cooperation and professionalism.

From The Publisher
Angel Stories ARLO KALLEMEYN Decades later, the Finance Minister to the Queen of an African empire returned home on the same road Joseph, Mary, and Jesus had traveled. In his imperial chariot, he read about an enigmatic world leader who, despite violent opposition from his own people, would lay the foundation for worldwide justice and peace. Along the way, he took on board a man who hailed a ride. In spite of their social and cultural differences, they enjoyed each other’s company and had an enlightening conversation. The passenger appeared to be acquainted with angels. More importantly, he was well informed about the mysterious world leader. Before parting, both men cheerfully resolved to promote the justice and generosity championed by that leader. Upon return to his duties in the royal court, the Finance Minister did just that in service to her majesty the Queen. Written by Harold Kallemeyn Brother of the Shopper Publisher and big fan of the Christmas story.

The Scott Middle School Real. Strong. Girls. Club volunteering at Tradewinds Services Inc.
_______________________________ When Lake Area United Way kicked off their Real. Strong. Girls. initiative earlier this year, they did so by partnering with Scott Middle School in Hammond to provide their female students with opportunities to partake in volunteer activities during spring break and attend a half day retreat. The girls had such a great time that they started their own Real. Strong. Girls. Club at the school. The club now partners with Lake Area United Way to bring in volunteers and speakers once a month to present on pressing issues concerning middle school girls. United Way also assists in setting up volunteer projects and other field trips for the club, the first of which took place on Monday, December 18th at Tradewinds Services Inc. in Merrillville. Eight girls from the club visited Tradewinds to volunteer in their child care facility. The girls helped the day care students make and wrap Christmas presents for their parents as well as Maytag dishwasher in great condition only $99. assist with regular daily activities like story time and playing in the gym. “It’s great to have the girls involved with the organization and learning about what we do and about the needs in the community,” said Lisa Tatina, Director of Development & Marketing for Tradewinds. “It’s also great for our day care students to get to interact with the older kids.” Tradewinds Services Inc. provides services for children and adults with physical and developmental disabilities. “I like participating in Real. Strong. Girls. because we get to help the community,” says 8th grader Brittany Jenks who attended all of the spring break projects, the retreat, and is now part of the club. “People should get involved because it’s really fun and you’re helping out. My favorite thing we’ve done so far is helping at Tradewinds. I love kids, so I really like helping with the younger ones.” The club wouldn’t be possible without
the support of the teachers and staff, particularly principal Colleen Bergren, who has become a key supporter of Real. Strong. Girls. “Real. Strong. Girls. has allowed our students to learn the value of volunteerism and explore various career options,” Bergren said. “We’re very excited to be able to partner with the girls at Scott Middle School and help them develop the skills they need to grow into strong, successful women,” said Lake Area United Way President & CEO Lisa Daugherty. “We’re especially excited about being able to do service projects and field trips with the girls because it gives them a chance to experience things outside of the classroom that they might not otherwise have the chance to see.” Real. Strong. Girls. is an initiative of Lake Area United Way that focuses on recognizing the strength and leadership capabilities of girls in Lake County, and provides them the support and resources to develop that potential.

The Children’s Theatre Company of South Suburban College (SSC) presents Rapunzel and the Frog Prince, a uniquely comical mashup that cleverly blends the two Grimm tales into one story. Playwright Michele L. Vacca and director Ellie Shunko team up once again to turn fairy tales upside down for a spirited adventure for young and old alike. Performances will take place in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on SSC’s Main Campus on Saturdays, January 13 and 20, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Additional weekday performances will take place Tuesday through Friday, January 16 through 19, 2018, at 9:45 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each day. The local witch, Gruesomella Jones (Cheryle Barham of South Holland) conjures a spell to make handsome Prince Beauregard (Zachary Scalzitti of St. John, IN) fall in love with the first woman he sees—Miss Jones herself. In walks Princess Rapunzel (Lauren Bryant of South Holland) and the Prince immediately falls head over heels for her. Annoyed by this turn of events, Gruesomella turns Beauregard into a frog so he can’t marry Princess Rapunzel. Not knowing his true identity, Rapunzel befriends the frog. Her bird-watching mother, Queen Alexandra (Betty Neil of Markham), attempts to find her daughter a proper princely husband. She calls in a series of candidates —each one more peculiar than the next—to present to Rapunzel in hopes that one will be able to replace her lost Prince Beauregard. The hopeful suitors are the ancient Prince Feeble and histrionic actor Steve Prince (both played by Pat Nevins of Homewood), the shy, clumsy Melvin Prince and the beat-boxing
poet Leonardo (both played by James Hudson of Chicago), greaser wannabe Da Prince and the lunatic pirate Captain Dedalus Darkwater (both played by Paul Braun of Highland, IN). Meanwhile, back in the forest, Gruesomella and her wacky, multilingual sidekick Laguna Loxley (Juniper Boerman DeYoung of Thornton) plot to capture Rapunzel and keep her from her friend and true love. The production staff includes director and Kindig Performing Arts Center manager Ellie Shunko, a Lansing resident. The lighting designers are the husband-and-wife team of Lydia and Dominic Bellamy-Palma of Crestwood. Costumes are created by Joanna Tassin of Park Forest. Prop mistresses are Rochelle Walters of South Chicago Heights and Heather Young of Chicago. The sets are built by Pat Nevins of Homewood and Anne and Michael Begora of Hegewisch. Spinning tunes at the sound board will be Jordan Swierczyna of Robbins. The production stage manager is Angela Martin of Midlothian. South Suburban College is located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, IL, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294. Free, ample parking is available. Tickets for Rapunzel and the Frog Prince are only $5 per person. Reservations for weekday shows are suggested as some performances are sold out. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the 24/7 box office voicemail line at (708) 210-5741. Leave your name and phone number and someone will return your call. You may also reserve tickets by e-mail at boxoffice@ssc.edu.

With the arrival of the New Year, many of us will pause and ponder the ageold question: “Who knows where the time goes?” And, as is always the case, none of us really do know. However, wherever the time goes, it will usually be a key factor in your success as an investor. Time can affect how you invest, and the results of your investing, in different ways: • Growth potential – Contrary to myth, there’s no real way to “get rich quick” when investing. To build wealth, you need patience—and time. If you own quality investments with growth potential, and you give them years —in fact, decades—to increase in value, your perseverance may be rewarded. Of course, there are no guarantees, and you’ll need the discipline to withstand the inevitable downturns along the way. But in describing how long he likes to keep his investments, renowned investor Warren Buffet says his favorite holding period is “forever.” • Targeted goals – To accumulate resources for retirement, you need to save and invest throughout your working life. But along the way, you’ll probably also have some shorterterm goals—making a down payment on a home, sending your children to college, vacations, and so on. Each of these goals has a specific time limit and usually requires a specific amount of money, so you will need to choose the appropriate investments. • Risk tolerance – When you have many decades to go until you retire, you can afford to take more risk with your investments because you have time to overcome periods of market volatility. But when you’re on the verge
of retirement, you may want to lower the risk level in your portfolio. For example, you may want to begin moving away from some of your more aggressive, growthoriented investments and move toward more income-producing vehicles that offer greater stability of principal. Even during retirement though, you’ll need your portfolio to provide enough growth opportunity at least to help keep you ahead of inflation. Thus far, we have looked at ways in which time plays a role in how you invest. But there’s also an aspect of time that you may want to keep out of your investment strategies. Specifically, you might not want to try to “time” the market. The biggest problem with market timing is it’s just too hard. You essentially have to be right twice, selling at a market top and buying at the bottom. Also, as humans, we appear to be somewhat wired to think that an activity—especially a long-running activity— will simply continue. So, when the market goes up, we seem to expect it to keep rising, and when the market drops, we think it will continue dropping. This can lead to big mistakes, such as selling after a major market drop even though that can be the time when it may be much smarter to buy because prices are low. Think carefully about how you can put all the days, months and years on your side. Time is the one asset you can’t replenish— so use it wisely. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I recently purchased a property that was sold as a two-bedroom home. Later I discovered that it’s actually a one-bedroom, as the largest room is just that—a “room” and not a “bedroom” because it does not have a closet. Can we go after the seller, the seller’s agent, or the appraiser for misrepresentation? If we decide to sell, we’d probably have to market it as a one-bedroom because a savvy buyer and/or his agent may realize that this is actually a one-bedroom. Should we add a closet? We’d have to eat the costs, which is not fair since we paid the asking price based on the fact that it was a twobedroom property. Answer: Have you ever been in an historic home? Often they have bedrooms with no closets. Instead, each room has a tall piece of furniture called an armoire where residents can hang their clothes. Today, we often use armoires as combination dressers and TV centers. A room does need a closet to be a bedroom. Instead, what’s generally required is a minimum square footage, a minimum height and a working window to provide natural light and ventilation. Typically the window sill for a bedroom in a new structure must be no more than 44 inches above the floor so that residents

have an emergency exit. For specifics, contact your local building inspector. Why is it that you think you have a claim against the seller, broker or appraiser? Did they put a fake door in the room to create the illusion of a closet? Were you prohibited from seeing the room? Banned from having a buyer broker? Prohibited from getting an independent home inspector of your choice? Do you not have any responsibility as a buyer? Although some within the legal/ industrial complex may disagree, the experience here is that most buyers and sellers, landlords and tenants act fairly and want to be treated fairly. When you have a situation which seems so outsized that it seemingly requires an instant trip to the Supreme Court, your first step should be to get more information, to better understand the problem. Most likely you’ll save a lot of legal fees. And personal angst. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling your Home? Call Cathy & Jim Higgins IN: 219-865-4361. GEORGE A N D ROSE PET R ICH S AY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND CELEBRATE A N A NNIV ERSARY: Their-soon-to-be 63rd anniversary, to be exact. The couple reside in Burnham, IL where he is an attorney and court judge for Calumet City. Both are devoted to Mother of God Church in Burnham, even though he is Serbian Orthodox and she is Catholic Croatian/Slovenian. They attend Bible study each week and naturally George, an attorney, loves a debate or two. Lucky for the Petrich’s, they get to celebrate both Christmases too— on December 25th and January 8th. Each year George sends out a Christmas letter that tells what the family has been up to the past year. George and Rosemary have 3 children, 7 g r a ndch i ld ren a nd a ne w g re atgrandchild. All the kids and grandkids are doing well, college grads with good
jobs so Grandma and Grandpa are pleased with the job they did raising them. By way of nostalgia, George and Rosemary met at DiVito’s Bowling Lanes on 95th street. The bowling alley is gone, but George, 87 and Rose, 85 are still here he notes with great pleasure! The couple are also active in the Calumet City Historical Society a nd t he Slovenia n Union Bra nch 16. Ardent gardeners both, their corner lot in Burnham is a riot of color and texture come June, July and August as Rose’s carefully tended flowers burst into bloom. The picture with this item was taken at Holy Name Cathedral where they joined other couples who were wed at least 50 years. Wow—that is a lot of years saying ‘“yes dear, no dear and let’s compromise!” Blessings to George and Rosemary Petrich. Many, many more holidays to come! *** PULLMAN TECH ALUM NEWS: Speaking of octogenarians, the amazing Pullman Techies and Spaghettios are still seeking a lums who may not have checked in with them in a while. Led by Carmen “Cal” Adducci of South Holland and Olga Brazzale Claesson of Lowell, the Pullman Te ch A lu m n i A s s oc iat ion host s a n annual reunion and sends out an actionpacked newsletter twice a year full of the comings and goings of fellow grads all over the country. These people are all in their 80’s and 90’s and beyond! Cal has a seemingly photographic memor y of events, businesses, churches and people from his youth and writes a cover story about these wonderful memories. For the December 2017 issue he w rote “A Christmas Class,” about Christmas Eve, 1934. He wrote about Pochron’s Tavern and Dance Hall and of Kate Camadeca and the Ostrowski family and the DiSanto cousins and Dr. Wilfred Major. No one had any money in those Depression days leading up to Christmas, but somehow the kids always managed to get some kind of gratefully received present despite the fact that there were no carpets on the bare floors, no chimney for Santa to come down and...where is that Red Ryder bike anyway? Somehow or other a bright green “Buddy L” truck appeared on Christmas morning. Santa made it to Pullman after all...thanks Cal for a great Christmas story. If you know of any alums from Pullman Tech, call Cal at 708-596-9537 or Olga at 219-696-0129. ***

Neuromas
Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

OUTDOOR OBSERVATIONS
The Subterranean Eastern Worm Snake TOM BERG
The Theater at the Center is excited to present Steel Magnolias as it’s season opening play. Cory Goodrich, in the role of M’Lynn, Landree Fleming, as Shelby, and Heidi Kettenring asTruvy, lead the cast with Joslyn Yvonne Jones as Ouiser, Jeannie Affelder as Clairee and Myesha-Tiara as Annelle. Previews begin February 22 with Opening Night on February 25 for the run through March 25. Steel Magnolias, written by Robert Harling, is a hilarious and heart-warming play set in a Louisiana beauty shop. It follows the hopes, dreams, triumphs and tragedies of six colorful characters, and inspired the 1989 film which starred Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Dolly Parton. It explores the bond between a mother and daughter, and friendships of those who feel like family. “Before Steel Magnolias became an iconic film and garnered an Academy Award for Julia Roberts, it was a funny and touching OffBroadway play about the bonds of friendship and family,” said Theatre at the Center Artistic Director Linda Fortunato, who will direct this new production.

Riley’s Corner
Grief RILEY ROGERS Grief—at some point in our life we will all experience it. The definition of grief is the normal process of dealing with a loss. The loss may be physical (such as a death), social (such as a divorce), or occupational (such as the loss of a job). Emotional reactions of grief can include anger, anxiety, sadness, and despair. Physical reaction of grief can include sleeping problems, changes in appetite, physical problems or illness. Grief has even been associated with suicide. At some point in our life, everyone loses someone that we may feel especially close to and then we enter into grieving. The loved one can be a parent, child, spouse, dear friend, or even a beloved companion animal. The grieving that follows a loss is real and can be very painful. While it may be tempting to deny grieving in an attempt to avoid the pain, it’s much healthier to accept those feelings of pain and loss and to work through the grieving process in an intentional way. It’s often easier for people who are grieving to have an intellectual understanding of the death (the person or pet is physically gone) than an emotional understanding (the loved one is not coming back). So, the first task for the grieving person is accepting that the loved one is really gone. The pain of grieving is real. It can be both physical and emotional and unfortunately there is no way to avoid it. Denying the pain of grieving can lead to physical symptoms and can also prolong the grieving process.
Some people try to avoid the grieving pain by becoming busy or traveling; others try to minimize grieving their loss by idealizing the loved one or refusing to allow negative thoughts about the loved one enter their minds. Some grieving people resort to the use of drugs, medication and even alcohol. Feeling the pain of grieving is very difficult but is also very necessary as an important step toward healing. Remember, if you or a loved one suffers a loss, whatever it may be, there is a process to grieving. There is no designated time that our loss must be over. The grief process at the onset is difficult, but as time passes we’ll begin again to look for reasons to hope. Hope based on absolutes and an eternal future offers a comforting and motivating perspective of life. One thing that I might suggest in coping with the healing process of grieving is turning to your faith in God. God promises us the grace to endure and the hope of better things to come. Before long we are greeting each day with anticipation and eagerly awaiting our future with Him and our loved one. Do you believe this? Then you do not sorrow (grieve) as those who have no hope (Thessalonians 4:13b). Please remember those who grieve—their path is difficult and lengthy. We all shall travel this path someday and would want the same consideration and kindness. Riley H. Rogers Dolton Mayor
A full-grown eastern worm snake fits easily in the palm of your hand. These gentle snakes are rarely seen by most people. Photo by Tom Berg.
_______________________________
Snakes are not the most beloved creatures in the great outdoors, but each species of snake has its own place in the ecosystem and each serves an important purpose. One interesting snake species that goes almost unnoticed in Illinois and Indiana is the Eastern Worm Snake. Worm snakes are very small, rarely reaching more than 12 inches in length. They look similar to common nightcrawlers (worms), but since they spend most of their time underground people seldom see them. In fact, most people around here have never heard of a worm snake! These tiny snakes are generally light brown in color, but they can also be tan or darker brown, too. Their belly is usually white or pink. Worm snakes not only look like earthworms, but earthworms make up the vast majority of their diet, too. That makes sense since they
live their lives underground where worms are common. On the rare occasions when people do encounter worm snakes, they find them resting under rocks, under rotting logs or under rotting leaf litter. Like most snakes, worm snakes are completely harmless to humans. People living in the northern half of Illinois and Indiana are very unlikely to see a worm snake in the wild, since these creatures are typically found south of Springfield and south of Indianapolis and are most common in the southern ends of the states. For more information on the more than 30 species of snakes living in Indiana, check out the Hoosier Herpetological Society’s website at www.hoosierherpsoc.org. Illinois has at least 38 species of snakes; you can see the list on the Chicago Herpetological Society’s website at www.chicagoherp.org.

Reflections on Martin Luther King Jr.
Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township President said, “Love and unity overpowers division and anger. Dr. King said human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle. State Senator Donne Trotter (IL 17th Senatorial District) commented, “Martin Luther King was a great man who represents justice and equality for all. State Senator Kwame Raoul (IL 13th Senatorial District) stated, “Martin Luther King said our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. This Martin
gave his life fighting for equality. This celebration reminds us of the struggle to make things better in America. Thornton Township Trustee Stafford C. Owens commented, “Martin Luther King Jr. stood for equality, diversity, and justice for all. Thornton Township Trustee Norbert Cipowski said, “We should celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. I will be there for the celebration! Thornton Township Clerk Jacqueline E. Davis-Rivera commented, “Martin Luther King Jr. has been a role model and inspiration to me. He broke a lot barriers being nonviolent. It was not popular to be nonviolent at that time and he received the Nobel Peace Prize. Alderman Joseph Whittington Jr, 2nd Ward, City of Harvey, IL said, “Martin Luther King Jr. is a man who gave his life in the fight to bring equality for all people, and this celebration means that he will never be forgotten. Alderman Christopher J. Clark, 3rd Ward, City of Harvey, IL stated, “Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is a great celebration. This is a constant reminder that we can always do better; that we made strides and we have a way to go. The Golden Rule is do unto others, as you want others to do unto you.
Luther King Jr. Day, I’m asking that we all speak out against the injustices that are taking place in our communities and across the state. We must speak a little bit louder against hate. We must speak a little bit louder against fear. We must speak a little bit louder against those who seek to divide us. And we must speak a little bit louder against the inequities in our society. If King has taught us anything, it’s that human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable. Loretta Wells, MLK Event Chairperson and Member of Thornton Township Human Relations Commission stated, “I have been chairing the program for about 6 years. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was dynamic. Celebrating him brings our youth together. It’s a phenomenal program that we celebrate yearly. John Arrington, MLK Program Chairperson and HSD205 Director of College and Career Programs, which is a Partnership between HSD205, SSC and Thornton Township said, “The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is a constant reminder of his legacy and what it meant, what he stood for, and sacrifice. King stood for nonviolence and forgave his enemies. That is phenomenal and unforgettable. Thornton Township Trustee Joyce M. Washington, Chairman of the township’s Human Relations Commission said, “Dr. King
