While most high school students were fast asleep at 6 a.m. on Monday—Martin Luther King Jr. Day—the Bishop Noll band was preparing to perform at the Hammond Civic Center. On this snowy day, a special celebration took place in honor of Dr. King, and students from Bishop Noll, a private Catholic high school in Hammond, performed throughout. This day holds special significance
for the band, who traveled last year to Memphis where they performed at the Liberty Bowl. During the tour, the band visited the National Civil Rights Museum, which is attached to the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was slain. “I was so proud of our students. They saw firsthand what this day means to our nation by seeing the struggles, tragedies and triumphs at the museum. They took the event and the day to heart and it was

Patti’s All-American: 30+ Years of Dance Here Comes Classes & Spring Recitals in the Region the Sun From The Publisher
ARLO KALLEMEYN For all you die-hard Chicagoland winter survivors, I have some good news. The days are getting longer! OK, not by much, but what with the dismal Bears season, we have to get our jollies where we can. Let’s all celebrate that the shortest day of the year in Chicagoland was way back on December 21. December 21 has been celebrated by people all over the Northern Hemisphere throughout history as Winter Solstice. The earth is now tilting back towards the source of all light, heat and sun tans. Since the days are getting longer and the nights shorter, this day marks the victory of the sun over the darkness. I’m sure one of our talented pastors could even expound on that in a sermon! For those of you who are like me, and enjoy watching the days getting longer, I’ve found a good sunset website: https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/chicago. Looking at the beautiful sunsets helps make winter more tolerable. You can see that sunset on January 1st happened at 4:30 pm. Now get ready for some big fun— the sun will set on January 31 at 5:04! That is a whole 34 minutes of extra sunshine! But wait, it gets better—on February 21, the sun will set at 5:30, a gift of a whole extra hour of light. Of course, most of us will use it to commute home after work, but at least we will be able to enjoy the scenery. Enjoy the extra sunshine—compliments of our blue planet doing the tilt. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of our amazing planet.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I recently retired, and my husband will retire in a few years. We currently make more than $4,000 monthly together and already own our 1940 home of 1,600 sq. ft. It’s an old-fashioned home, but in good condition. We have updated much of our home. My husband wants to sell and buy something larger, and I want to remodel rather than have a $150- to $200,000 larger home and high monthly payments again. Within our area the homes are selling at $60 to $90,000 and I believe that we can sell for $89,000. I want to stay and he wants to sell. What do think we should do? Answer: You have a current monthly income now—but what happens after he retires? Whether to move or not move is a personal decision. There is no “right”

Civil Air Patrol (CAPS) Chaplain Le’on Willis, educator and retired pastor, and Principal Dennis D. Willis will be among Thornwood’s faculty members to attend cultural sensitivity training, one of the school’s Professional Development initiatives. Professors from Governor State University will lead the training, which is set for February. –––––––––––––––––––––––
By Patricia Muhammad In an effort to provide teachers with a better understanding of the students they teach on a daily basis, Governor State University (GSU) has partnered with Thornwood High School to encourage educators to shift towards a broader understanding of cultural sensitivity, to enhance teaching effectiveness for the more than 1,700 students attending the South Holland high school. According to Principal Dennis D. Willis, the school will host a cultural sensitivity forum in February to assist teachers in understanding how to meet the cultural needs of the predominantly AfricanAmerican student body. Principal Willis elaborated: “GSU professors are coming to Thornwood High School to host a hands-on professional development training for teachers on cultural sensitivity, to help them understand the students that they serve. It is important for teachers to know how to be culturally sensitive to the predominantly African-American population here at Thornwood, particularly where those students are coming from and what they are experiencing.” More than 20 years ago during the mid90s, a cultural shift for African-American families in Chicago occurred. Thousands of Black families left the inner city of Chicago and resettled in the south suburbs, following the demolition of all but a few of the Chicago Housing Authority’s dilapidated public housing projects. Through the state’s Section 8 voucher program, scattered sites in the south suburbs became home to many families who moved to the suburban towns of South Holland, Lansing, East Hazel Crest and Matteson. Some leaving the inner city projects were coming from a life of hard knocks and gang violence. The City of Harvey, which was already weighed down with economic problems, also became a housing resettlement area during this migratory period.

Many of the African-American male students coming out of the inner city had already witnessed some form of gang violence, which has only increased since the 1990s migration. In more recent times, an upswing of gang violence in 2016 left more than 740 African-Americans murdered in Chicago. More than ever before, African American families are leaving the inner city violence. As an influx of Black families continues to move south of the city, they bring their pain and suffering with them. Major Le’on Willis, a retired pastor, educator, and Civil Air Patrol (CAPS) Chaplain at Thornwood High School explains: “One of the reasons for students’ lack of interest in the classroom is that when you look at young men coming in, they’ve seen their mother get killed, their father get shot, a brother get shot, or whatever the case may be. A lot of those psychological needs never get addressed. So, when they come to school, they come to school bringing that with them.” “When teachers are not astute enough to understand the particular culture the students come from,” Chaplain Willis continues, “they simply say to them, ‘You came here to learn.’ But until we can address the student’s psychological needs, we can never move that particular child to where they should be.” “When we are not willing to admit that we need to make a shift towards cultural sensitivity, it will interfere with academic achievement,” Chaplain Willis said, suggesting that showing empathy towards students when they are acting out, or when they are ‘not themselves,’ could make a world of difference. “Also,” he continued, “when we do not work with students and respect that student’s culture, that student will begin to feel that you do not care about them.” Willis suggested that just spending a mere 30 seconds to ask a student whether they are okay could enhance cultural sensitivity.

By Patricia Muhammad To own a thriving tax business wasn’t an easy journey for owner Ginger Alexander of Speedy Refund in South Holland. “I work hard, and I show my employees how hard I work, so they can work even harder to earn a position like I now have,” she said. Alexander runs a blossoming tax service, and she finds time to go the extra mile to give back to the community. “My tax team and I go out into the community because we believe in helping people. We do book bag drives at the beginning of the year, and we also network with corporate sponsors. We also seek out qualified clients to be part of our tax team. Recently, Speedy Refund partnered with Cricket Cell Phone Company in Dixmoor—and last year we worked with Kingdom Chevrolet in Chicago—where we do taxes inside their stores,” she said. A single mom and ex-military wife, Alexander said she started her tax business more than ten years ago with little to nothing. With grit and determination, she set out to beat the odds. Today her tax business thrives in a great location along Sibley Blvd. With more than 300 clients, Alexander runs a unique income tax business with a desire to help local youth. At Speedy Refund, Alexander’s team prepares all necessary IRS forms for clients including the standard 1040, 1019, 8867, 5695 (for homeowners), 1099 GE, and 1099R. “The 1040 is a standard form that we use. We have young people who file the commonly
used form 1040 EZ. The company also assists clients with back taxes and exemptions.” As noted in a recent Crowe Horwath report, President Trump’s new 2017 tax plan doubles the standard deduction to $12,000 for individuals and $24,000 for married taxpayers. His plans also increase the child tax credit. Alexander asks clients not to panic should they find themselves being audited by the IRS. “It depends on what the IRS is auditing them for. If they get a letter from the IRS stating that their check is being withheld, then it could be for something as simple as verification of a dependent on their return. The IRS will ask the client to provide medical or school records to prove that the dependent has been with them for up to twelve months.” Tax season for Speedy Refund began Dec. 28, and the heaviest of the business foot traffic occurs during the month February. Alexander pointed out that key IRS filing dates are January 28th and February 15, 2018. “When clients are getting their taxes done, they should make sure they are done by a tax professional. To avoid fraud or identity theft, keep information confidential and do not pass social security numbers to multiple preparers. That’s very, very dangerous,” Alexander said. To learn more about Speedy Tax Service and important IRS updates, please contact Ginger Alexander at gingeralexander02@yahoo.com. Speedy Refund is located at 73 W. Sibley Blvd., South Holland, Illinois.
by Melanie Jongsma Ask Neil Okuley why a new high school is needed in South Holland, and his answer might include statistics, anecdotes, and references to books about education, business, religion, and history. But all of that passion and evidence can be summarized in one simple fact—the American educational model that was developed in the 1800s is no longer best meeting the needs of 21st-century families. “It can’t,” says Okuley (pronounced OAKly). “Too much has changed. New skills are needed. The jobs we are preparing kids for now did not exist in the 1800s—or in the early 2000s! The networks and technology and systems that surround us now—we have to incorporate those into our learning experience.” Okuley is the Academic Dean of the new Unity Christian Academy that will begin classes this August. UCA’s bold tagline is “High School: Redefined. Redesigned.” They want to make sure people understand that creating a high school for today’s students means more than simply adding smart boards to every classroom or having a school app. It requires redefining the purpose of high school, and redesigning everything in order to achieve that purpose—the curriculum, the schedule, the relationships with local businesses, even the tuition structure. That kind of change can be difficult for people to wrap their minds around, so Okuley and UCA have been systematically hosting a variety of information sessions. The Open
Pets
House scheduled for Tuesday, January 30, is the next opportunity available to the general public. The event will take place at South Suburban College, which is significant because SSC is partnering with UCA, making their science labs and classrooms available to the new school. The unique benefits of that partnership are among the discussion items at the January 30 Open House. Other discussion highlights include: • Unity Christian Academy’s curriculum overview • Schedule and calendar details • Program details regarding Unity’s innovative approach to high school internships • A tour of the science facilities • Time for questions and conversations Okuley says the Open House will be relevant to families whether they have never heard of Unity Christian Academy or they’ve attended previous events. “We’ll cover the basics for newcomers,” he says, “but there are always new developments as we march toward opening day, and we share those updates at each event. So we encourage families to attend as many events as they can!” An RSVP isn’t required, but it does help with planning. The RSVP form is available at www. WeAreUCA.org/openhouse. South Suburban College is located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, IL. The Open House will be held in the Kindig Performing Arts Center.

Indiana Has Two New Nature Preserves
Indiana’s Natural Resources Commission (NRC) approved two new nature preserves during its regularly scheduled meeting on January 16. This action increases to 284 the number of state-designated sites protected by the Nature Preserves Act. Calumet Prairie Nature Preserve in Lake County is in the northeast portion of Lake County, within Lake Station. Measuring about 119 acres, it lies within the Northwestern Morainal Natural Region. Owned and managed by DNR’s Division of Nature Preserves, the site For sale: Wood burning f i re p l a c e b a s e, 5 f t x 5 f t ceramic tile with metal border, fireproof backing, very heavy. Brand new never used, paid $450, sell for $250. 708-877-6387
contains the largest sedge meadow and wet prairie natural community complex in Indiana, and provides habitat for associated rare plants and animals. The approximately 519-acre Outbrook Ravine Nature Preserve, in Clark and Scott counties, encompasses a large, rugged area with a range of high-quality forest community types (mesic through dry), including the most northwestern extension of naturally occurring Virginia pine. The Knobstone Trail, Indiana’s long-distance trail, traverses the site, which is owned and managed by DNR’s
18 speed Roadmaster bicycle, $150 obo. 708-4917267 For sale: Snapper snowblower, 3hp 21” 2 cycle electric start, new scrapper bar, old and ugly, but runs great $80. 219-285-1007
Division of Forestry. The NRC also adopted a rule that prohibits the use of an airborne human transportation device (such as an ultralight or glider) or an unmanned motor-driven airborne device (i.e., drone) on a DNR property, unless the operator has obtained a permit or is doing so in an area designated for that activity. Drones are often used for arial photography, so photographers should be sure to get a permit before using the device. Enjoy the new nature preserves!

Towle Youth Theater Ensemble Auditions for Mandate for Murder The Towle Theater announces auditions for their Spring Towle Youth Theater Ensemble production of Mandate for Murder. The auditions are Saturday, January 28 at 10am, Sunday, January 29 at 1pm and Saturday, February 3 at 10am. You do not need to attend all dates. If interested in auditioning or have any questions, please email jcasey@towletheater.org or call the theater at 219-937-8780. Auditions are open to anyone and everyone ages 12-18 grades 6-12 from Indiana or Illinois, public, private or home schooled. All are welcome. Auditions will take place at the Towle Theater, 5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond IN. For auditions, please prepare a 1 minute memorized comedic monologue. You will also be asked to read from the script. Keep in mind, auditioning is similar to
interviewing for a job. Please dress business casual, arrive well rested and 15 minutes prior to the audition time. Politics can be murder! It’s election night and all the friends and supporters of mayoral candidate Matthew Kensington are throwing him a surprise birthday/campaign party. But there’s one surprise no one suspects. An aide is found stabbed in the back with the birthday cake knife! Clues and suspects abound in this frenetic political satire that leaves the audience wondering just who they CAN trust. Students from all over NW Indiana and Southern suburbs of Chicago are strongly encouraged to audition. Those who audition and don’t make the cast, or anyone interested in offstage/back-stage involvement, will work on small committees
for the show including box office, tech and PR/marketing. Since 2010, the Towle Youth Theater Ensemble, or TYTE, has been wowing NWI audiences with productions such as the Northwest Indiana Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s 13, Anne of Green Gables, Laughing Stock and Clue the Musical, as well at the World Premiere of Mental by Towle Youth Theater Ensemble Member, Isabel Zuniga. The Towle Theater is located in beautiful downtown Hammond at 5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond IN. Parking is available just off Fayette Street only steps away from our alley entrance at the back of the theater. For more information, please call 219-937-8780 or visit www. towletheater.org.

Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere by Julie T. Lamana Armani is about to turn ten. She cannot wait. Friends are coming over to eat cake and play on their slip and slide. It’s going to be a great day. But then Armani and her brother notice something odd happening in their neighborhood in the Lower Nines of New Orleans. Her neighbors are packing up and leaving because a hurricane is heading their way. There have been storms before, but Armani and her family always end up just fine once it passes. Armani makes her brother promise not to tell their parents or their grandma what the neighbors told them. Armani doesn’t want her tenth birthday ruined by some stupid storm that’s probably going to miss them anyway. The day of Armani’s birthday arrives, and so do the strong winds of the storm. Armani’s parents decided to limit the party to only family which includes Armani’s parents, brother, baby sister, grandma, uncle and his girlfriend, and her cousin. Soon it’s clear that this storm is not blowing over them, but is going to hit them straight on. Armani’s family barricades themselves in the house, but soon the winds blow trees and other debris into the house.
Finally a calmness settles over the house, only to be interrupted by a wall of water flowing down the street from the broken levees. Armani and her family climb into the attic as their house fills with water. Every part of the storm brings more and more trouble. Armani and her family get separated, and she finds herself all alone with her one-yearold sister in a center for people left homeless after the storm. Now she must do what she can to find her missing family. Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere is an emotional story about a family in the Lower Nines who were left devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina happened almost thirteen years ago, which leaves the target audience of this novel without personal knowledge of the event. Lamana does a fantastic job of putting the reader in the middle of the storm through Armani’s experiences. From the guilt felt for not telling her parents about the evacuation to protect her party, to the determination to reunite her family, Armani’s emotions take you on a trip of survival and love. After the destruction brought by so many hurricanes at the end of 2017, this book is sure to find a reader.

Each INDOT District invites art classes/programs from middle and high schools to paint an INDOT snow plow blade with original artwork to represent their school. Applications and additional program details can be found at http://www. in.gov/indot/3427.htm. In addition to being seen in full service during the winter weather months, the blades may be used at events within the school’s community to enhance public awareness, promote safety and foster greater appreciation of both INDOT and the school’s art program. Paint the Plow is open to all middle schools, high schools and career-technical schools across the state. Only students who are currently enrolled in the applicant school may participate in the creation, execution and completion of the art project. Hammond Library Hosts Iditarod Musher
Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Paying Buyer’s Closing Costs MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate market, it is very common for buyers to ask that the seller pay for the buyer’s closing costs. Some sellers are baffled by this request and others realize that this is the way many nonbuyers become buyers today. Many times, especially in the case of first-time home buyers, they have enough funds for their down payment requirement, but can’t quite swing the closing costs. Since most of the loans today will allow for seller-paid concessions, the buyers ask the sellers to pay this on their behalf. This is the case with FHA, VA and most conventional mortgages. Today we are seeing more moveup buyers ask for this concession as well. Often, more experienced buyers would rather finance the closing costs into the purchase price and free up their cash for upgrades once they move in. Let’s say that the cost of financing averages $5 per $1,000. If the buyer rolls the closing cost into their mortgage with an average closing cost concession of $3,000, they are increasing their monthly payment by only $15 per month. Much of this is interest in the first 5 to 10 years of a 30 year mortgage, which in turn is a tax deduction for the
buyer. It makes more sense to finance that money, free up their cash and have a larger tax write off at the end of each year. As long as the net proceeds are acceptable to the seller, the seller concessions shouldn’t matter. Many times a firsttime home buyer would not be able to purchase a home without this assistance. If a buyer’s original offer is not acceptable, I will usually counsel my seller to counter-offer the price and not the seller concessions. If the buyer needs help with the closing costs (concessions), don’t try to eliminate them. Just counter back at an acceptable purchase price leaving the concessions in place and determine the net. It’s all about the funds the seller walks away with at the closing table— regardless of how you get there. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. B u d e r H o m e s . com. Musher Karen Land is pictured with her dog team in action. Photo courtesy of Karen Land. _______________________________ The famous Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race takes place in Alaska in early March, lasting for more than a thousand miles and during treacherous weather conditions. Learn more about the Iditarod from someone who experienced it firsthand as Karen Land visits the Hammond Public Library on Saturday, January 27 at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Not only will Land describe the race and the equipment used, but she’s also bringing a special guest: her dog, Noggin! Land, who was born in Indiana and now lives in Montana, has competed in the race three times. She became a dog handler for veteran musher, Terry Adkins, and learned how to be a musher herself.

Land graduated from the University of Montana with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. In 1999 she was working as a writer, covering a rookie musher in Maine’s Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Race for a graduate program in non-fiction writing, when she “fell in love with the dogs and the competition.” Land enjoys hiking, camping, and backpacking. In 1997 she spent six months hiking the Appalachian Trail with her dog Kirby. Land’s presentation kicks off Youth Winter Reading, which runs February 1-28. In Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, South Suburban College’s Office of Student Life, along with the South Suburban Housing Center, will be presenting an exhibit of photographs by Bernard J. Kleina entitled “The Chicago Freedom Movement 1965-1966.” The exhibit will be on view from January 15 to 24 in the college’s first floor MB Financial Bank Room. Included in the exhibit are rare color images of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Coretta Scott-King, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Al Raby, and Ralph Abernathy, as well as images of those who attempted to disrupt the peaceful marches. Mr. Kleina’s photos have been shown in more than 35 cities as well as at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama, the Illinois State Capital Building, the Cincinnati Museum Center, the Toledo Museum of Art, and within a permanent exhibit at the University of Washington School of Law, Seattle. Dr. King was instrumental in the fight for open and fair housing nationally, as well as locally in the City of Chicago. Upon his assassination and the public reaction that followed, advocates gained the momentum necessary to pass the Fair Housing Act just 7 days later. This exhibit demonstrates the determination King and the marchers displayed among strong opposition that ultimately led to the protections that we see today, 50 years later. Admission is free. South Suburban College is located at 15800 S. State Street. For more information about all of SSC’s programs, admissions and registration, please visit www.ssc. edu or contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718.

Leavitt Provides Homes for Six Individuals with Disabilities Residents with disabilities now have new opportunities for independent living in Flossmoor. The Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA) and New Star joined state and local officials to announce the grand opening of the Leavitt Apartments, a new six-unit apartment building and the first single-site supportive housing development for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities financed by IHDA. All six apartments are specifically designed to allow residents—who would otherwise live with family or in group homes—to live independently with the help of services provided on-site by New Star. “This is an amazing opportunity for the Village of Flossmoor,” IHDA Executive Director Audra Hamernik said. “These are critically needed apartments that will go a long way to improve quality of life for people with disabilities. With affordable rents, access to neighborhood amenities and connections to supportive services, they will ensure that every resident can reach their full potential, regardless of the challenges they face.” Located within walking distance to the amenities of downtown Flossmoor— including the Metra station, library, post office and more—the Leavitt Apartments offer new options for those who do not need the 24hour services of a group home. Individualized supportive services provided by New Star,
including education, life management skills, vocational services and enrichment programs, create a unique opportunity to balance residents’ desire for independence with their personal service needs. “It is a milestone for any individual to live on their own and achieve independence,” said Dan Strick, President/CEO of New Star. “This is an incredible opportunity for our consumers to take on that responsibility with supportive care. It highlights our mission and firm commitment to provide choices and opportunities for persons with disabilities.” Developed by New Star and Brush Hill Development, Leavitt Apartments was financed entirely with $2.3 million from the State’s Build Illinois Bond Program, which provides affordable housing grants, loans and investments with an emphasis on serving lowincome persons with disabilities. In addition, rental assistance for all six apartments will be provided through the Housing Authority of Cook County. IHDA (www.ihda.org) is a self-supporting state agency that finances the creation and the preservation of affordable housing across Illinois. Since its creation in 1967, IHDA has allocated $18 billion and financed approximately 255,000 affordable housing units for residents of Illinois. For more information on leasing and waitlist status, contact New Star at (708) 755-8030.

GOD WITH US
In Darkness...Seen A Great Light!” ANNA M. CAISON Someone has summarized the previous year as “a slippery slope down a dark abyss.” Many have expressed hopelessness, shock, dismay and fear for their lives. But even in the darkest of times, there is light for those whose hope is anchored in the Lord. As we transition into 2018, I feel pressed to remind us of what the Prophet Isaiah spoke concerning the “Great Light.” The prophet wrote: “In Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” This passage of scripture was fulfilled when Jesus began His ministry in Galilee. Not only did the people walk in outer darkness (dark society), they also dealt with personal darkness within. When Jesus came on the scene, preaching “the Kingdom of God is at hand,” the people who believed His message saw and heard the voice of God through Him. Four fishermen left their boats and followed Him. A tax collector left his table and followed. Another tax collector didn’t
leave his table, but he changed the way he did business; he stopped cheating citizens. The hopeless received hope and those who were tormented were set free. The social outcasts were accepted in His presence and the sick were made well. His life was the Great Light that turned the hearts of the people back to the Creator and they became the children of God. What about you and me? Jesus said we are the Light of the world! We have within us the power to turn the hearts of men and women, boys and girls to God. Don’t allow darkness to snuff out your light, or let fear make you hide your identity in Christ. Remember Jesus has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. We are more than conquerers through Him who loves us. Let’s demonstrate our love for Him by living out the year as lit candles, lighting our world for His glory and the salvation of humanity. For questions and/or comments send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com. Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.
Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Every January, I re-read Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” His words, backed by his life, remind me that conviction, anchored in Christ, produces courageous, sacrificial love. This letter called a complacent church to live out the gospel and its implications beyond its walls. Dr. King wrote, “There was a time when the church was very powerful—in the time when the early Christians rejoiced at being deemed worthy to suffer for what they believed. In those days the church was not merely a thermometer that recorded the ideas and principles of popular opinion; it was a thermostat that transformed the mores of society. Whenever the early Christians entered a town, the people in power became disturbed and immediately sought to convict the Christians for being ‘disturbers of the peace’ and ‘outside agitators’. But the Christians pressed on, in the conviction that they were ‘a

colony of heaven,’ called to obey God rather than man. Small in number, they were big in commitment… By their effort and example, they brought an end to such ancient evils as infanticide and gladiatorial contests” (“Letter from Birmingham Jail.” © The Estate of Martin Luther King, Jr.). This is a timeless call for me and for the church of Jesus in every age. God created all people in his image, with equal value and dignity. All people, from womb to tomb—a point we must emphasize on the tragic 45th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Are we, like Dr. King, prepared to declare and embody Jesus’ life-giving love that others may thrive? Do we ‘love life’ in theory? Or will we lay down our lives for real people in real time—the unborn baby, her parents, persons with disabilities, those trapped in poverty and injustice, the homeless, the immigrant, the elderly?

H A PP Y 9 0 T H BI RT H DAY TO J E A N RICHCREEK LEESON: Jea n is a ver y active, independent senior citizen who lives on her own in a townhome in Dyer, Indiana. Jean celebrated her 90th birthday on Monday, January 22nd in the company of her family at a small dinner. She was born in Kentland, Indiana and on the day of her birth, the church bells rang which the family took as a good omen for the new baby. Jean married Richard Leeson on November 24,1946. The Leeson’s were the parents of 2 girls (Nan and Kay), the grandparents of 3 and great grandparents of 3. The family moved to Whiting, IN where her dad took a job with the NYC RR. After taking a few jobs nearby, Jean settled into her favorite—working at the W hiting News or “the paper store” as she called it. Richard passed away at 75 in 1999. They were happily married for 52 years. Jean is a fan of the color red; Cardinals are her favorite bird and she has quite a collection of the beautiful birds. Her favorite flowers are peonies. Most of all Jean loves to clean and decorate and redecorate. During one early episode, her husband noted that Jean had him paint the rooms so often that “they got smaller!” She is pictured above at age 2, 18, and 90. Happy Birthday Jean Richcreek Leeson, Many Many More! N 2 N thanks Jean’s daughter Kay for the information. Here are a few more recollections on her Mom’s life from daughter Kay: “Jean was born in Kentland, Indiana on 1/22/1928 to Myrtle and J. Leroy Richcreek. Her mom wanted a baby girl and was very excited when Jean arrived! Two years later Jean’s little brother Ken was born. He was an Indiana State Trooper later in life and then became a private investigator after retiring from the police force. Ken passed away in 2012. W hen Jean was 8 the family moved to Whiting, Indiana where her Dad, J Leroy worked for the NYC RR until he retired. Jean was not happy moving to Whiting from Kentland because neighbors said she had a ‘twang’ to her voice. That faded with time and soon Jean loved Whiting. Jean and Richard married on November 24, 1946. They became the parents of Nan and Kay. In 1958 the family moved to Highland, Indiana. Richard was a t r uck d r iver/mecha n ic i n t he A r my so he had many jobs, mainly driv ing trucks, and finally ended up working for Artim Trucking Co. until he retired. Dad provided a very comfortable middle class life for his family and felt my Mom did not need to work. The family had a small private dinner party for Jean on her birthday due to the cold weather and Jean’s bad knees.” I guess at age 90, bad knees are a small problem to live with! This family is very lucky to have had Jean

National School Choice at Calvary Academy
Crystal is in kindergarten at Calvary and is happy to celebrate National School Choice Week! –––––––––––––––––––––––
Calvary Academy announced today that it will celebrate the school’s students, teachers, and staff during National School Choice Week 2018, which will be held from January 21-27, 2018. Calvary is a Christian school serving grades Pre-K-8 with a
student enrollment of around 300. Started in 2011, National School Choice Week is the world’s largest annual education-related celebration. The goal of NSCW, which features participation from tens of thousands of schools and organizations, is to shine a positive spotlight on effective education options for children. During National School Choice Week, schools across America celebrate the challenging, motivating, and effective education they provide to students. At the same time, parents use the week to learn more about the education options available to their children, in advance of the upcoming school year. “We are grateful to have Calvary Academy participate in National School Choice Week 2018,” said Andrew Campanella, NSCW President. “I salute the students, teachers, staff and families of CA for their commitment to raising awareness about educational opportunity. Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, and it’s up to everyone to ensure that we prepare children for successful, happy, and productive lives. Calvary is working to do that.” National School Choice Week is nonpartisan and nonpolitical, and is not related to any legislative advocacy effort. For more information about Calvary Academy, visit www. calvary-academy.com. For more information about National School Choice Week, visit www.schoolchoiceweek.com, via Twitter (www.twitter. com/schoolchoicewk), on Facebook (www.facebook.com/ schoolchoiceweek) or on Instagram (www.instagram.com/ schoolchoiceweek).

Financial Advice Column
When Do You Need a Financial Advisor? BOB KRYGSHELD If you could accomplish all your financial goals just by putting your paycheck into the bank every couple of weeks, you wouldn’t need the services of a financial advisor. But life isn’t that simple—and so, at some point, you may realize you need some professional assistance. But when? Actually, you might benefit from the services of a financial advisor during many life events, including the following: • Starting your career – You may encounter several questions related to your benefits package. Should you contribute to your 401(k) or other employersponsored plan? If so, how much, and where should you invest your money? Are the life and disability insurance policies offered by your employer sufficient for your needs? A financial advisor can help you answer these and other questions you may have. • Getting married – You’ll have to decide if, and how, you want to combine your finances. Also, you and your spouse may have different attitudes about investing and different tolerances for risk. A financial professional can help you find common ground. • Changing jobs – When you switch jobs, what should you do with your old employer’s retirement plan? And how should you invest in the plan offered by your new employer? • Facing a layoff or buyout – You may never go through a layoff, or take a buyout offer from an employer – but if either of these events happen, you will face some financial decisions. And during such a potentially stressful period, you may be tempted to make some financial moves that won’t be beneficial. A financial advisor can suggest some strategies that may help you keep your investment Battery Back-up Pumps give you peace of mind. We have the best one, the finest we can find. situation relatively intact until you land your next job. • Saving for Education – If you have children you’ll probably want to start putting money away as early as possible. A financial professional can show you the various education-savings vehicles, and help you choose the ones that are most appropriate for your needs. • Getting divorced – If you are fortunate, you won’t ever experience a divorce, but, if it does happen, you’ll want to get the professional assistance necessary to ensure fair outcomes for everyone. You’ll obviously need to work with an attorney, but you may find that, in the area of investments, a financial advisor also can be useful. • Entering retirement – As you near retirement, your key questions will switch—but not entirely— from putting money in to taking money out. How much can you withdraw each year from your 401(k) and IRA without running the risk of outliving your resources? When should you start taking Social Security? If you were to work a couple of years longer than you had originally intended, how would it affect your withdrawal strategies? Again, a financial advisor can help you with these issues. As you can see, most important life events will carry some financial concerns. But you don’t have to face these challenges alone—and by getting the help you need, when you need it, you can ease the transition from one stage of life to another. Speaking Of Seniors
Details of Medicare Mess-Up WOODROW WILCOX On November 21, 2017, I helped a client from Munster, Indiana. I reviewed the papers that she brought and phoned Medicare with her. Her main problem was that Medicare had not updated her Medicare file in a timely manner. Claims for medical services that she received after starting to use Medicare were not being paid because the bad records stated that she did not have Medicare as her primary insurer. She showed me a copy of the notice of termination of private group insurance that was file stamped as received by Medicare at its office in Merrillville on April 18, 2017. The notice of the insurance change stated the effective date of August 1, 2017. But, Medicare never updated her record until October 3, 2017. So, all the medical claims filed in August and September were rejected by Medicare and our client was getting big medical bills that she should not have received. I helped the client send letters to all the medical service providers that were sending bills to her. I copied and mailed the letters for the client. Each letter explained how Medicare caused the problem and when Medicare said it had fixed the problem that it caused. Then, the letter asked the doctor, hospital, or other service to refile the

claim because it should sail through smoothly now that the problem was fixed. The client said that it might be a good idea to tell seniors that when they switch to Medicare, don’t use a medical service for at least three months because that’s how much time Medicare needs to update a file so that a Medicare claim will be paid properly. In her case, it took Medicare nearly six months to finally get around to updating her file so that claims could be paid. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency has earned a reputation for “going the extra mile” with our senior citizen clients whenever the Medicare system fails to work properly. If your insurance agent or agency does not help clients this much, maybe you should switch to an insurance agency that does.

The Walter W. Schultz Insurance Agency was founded on January 23, 1923, by Walter W. Schultz and his father Charles C. Schultz and was operated for many years under the name of Charles C. Schultz and Son. The business consisted of dry goods, shoes, a Post Office, insurance and real estate. The Agency was operated by Walter and his wife Cherrie. Mr. Schultz was also Postmaster of the Oak Glen Post Office. The dry goods and shoe business was phased out in the 1930’s. In 1942, Mrs. Mildred Ogborn became the first employee and worked at the Agency for thirty-seven years, until her retirement. In 1951, the Post Office operation was discontinued and moved to Hartfield’s Delicatessen. As Lansing grew, so did the insurance business. During the late 1960’s the real estate business was discontinued and full time was devoted to the insurance business. After the passing of Walter (1981) & Cherrie (1991) Schultz, the Agency was run by Mr. & Mrs. Schultz’s daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Norman Abbott, until Diane’s passing in July 2006. The agency is owned by Norman and is run by their daughter Cheryl, and has eight people on its staff. Agents Jim Janssen and Dan Derks have been with the agency 41 and 40 years respectively. It is the oldest family owned business in Lansing. The Walter W. Schultz Agency, Inc., wishes to take this opportunity to express their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the many policyholders for their patronage during the past ninety-five years.
