Father’s Day Jazz Concert The weather won’t be the only thing heating up this summer. The South Suburban Jazz All-Stars, led by percussionist, Art “Turk” Burton, will host a “hot as fire” jazz concert in honor of all Dads on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 18, 2017 from 4-6 p.m. at the Hawkins Multi-Purpose Center, 151st and 4th Avenue, Phoenix, IL 60426 (located 4 blocks east of Halsted at 151st Street). Led by Burton and part of his “Sunday Jazz Live” initiative, the South Suburban Jazz All-Stars will feature acclaimed musicians Ernest Dawkins on saxophone, Eddie Beard on piano, Dushun Mosley on drums, and special guests. “We are happy to present to our public another exciting Father’s Day Concert as the event last year was outstanding in terms of musicianship and audience attendance,” Burton stated. “This year’s concert is one concert you will not want to miss,” Burton concluded. Tickets are available at the door and your donation of $15 per person will help support this year’s “Phoenix Family Festival.” Refreshments are included and there will be a “Father’s Day Raffle” for a chance to win a special gift for a special Dad. More information is available by emailing Art “Turk” Burton at atb60426@aol.com.

Pets for Life Wins National Award

Humane Society Calumet Area’s Pets for Life team Rocio Bolivar and Raven Shutsman accepted the Community Cup award from Humane Society of the United States on May 11 at the Animal Care Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Community Cup is awarded annually to a regional PFL team who have done exceptional work that year. __________________________________________ (PFL) team was awarded the Community Cup at Humane Society of the United States’ national Animal Care Expo on May 11 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Community Cup is awarded annually to a regional PFL team who have done exceptional work that year. HSCA’s PFL team is one of 20 currently operating in the U.S. HSUS’ PFL Mentorship and Training Manager Jason Schipkowski said HSCA’s team received the award for showing the “true grit” of the program and referred to team members Rocio Bolivar and Raven Stutsman as the “dream team.” Rocio Bolivar started her career in animal welfare a few years ago as an intern with Mercy for Animals. She then toured the country with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals before joining Humane Society of the United States’ Pets for Life team based in Chicago. When the Chicago team disbanded, she joined HSCA’s PFL team in Fall 2016. Raven Shutsman has always had a heart for helping others and began her social service work as a volunteer advocate for battered women and children. She began volunteering at Central Oklahoma Humane Society’s Humane Place Animal Clinic, eventually joining their Pets for Life team when it formed two years ago. When the Oklahoma City PFL program dissolved, the move to NWI and HSCA’s team seemed a natural fit. The Pets for Life program was started by HSUS in 2011 with teams in Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. The program seeks to reduce local stray populations in underserved communities through targeted spay/neuter and vaccines services.

Community Hospital’s celebration of Nurses Week culminated with a ceremony to recognize the most outstanding nurses and patient caregivers, representing five pillars of excellence, as voted by their coworkers. From the nursing staff, Lisa Conn, Shawnta Leeks, Kathy Liss, Jenn Pykosz and Cheryl Risch were among the nominees chosen by their peers at the hospital for going above and beyond in their respective patient care areas. Caregivers who were selected include Arlene Anderson, Dawn McHugh, Holly

To meet the criteria for the Pillars of Excellence awards, the staff member must demonstrate excellence in the areas of Service, People, Growth, Quality and Finance (stewardship). These standards and values set the foundation for the hospital’s mission to bring quality care to everyone in need. “Our nurses and caregivers place the care of our patients first and foremost before anything else we do,” said CEO Lou Molina. “We are proud to have such

Here We Go Again! ARLO KALLEMEYN

Cook County government officials are proposing ANOTHER huge tax increase on hardworking residents. It’s not enough that we pay the highest sales tax in the country. Now Cook County is going after individual items that we all buy every single week. On July 1, 2017, Cook County will begin charging a new, penny-per-ounce beverage tax on more than 1,000 different products. This tax is different than the sales tax. Cook County found a way to add a tax that will add up even faster than sales tax. Hundreds of beverages – pop, sports drinks, juice drinks, ice teas, lemonades, even flavored waters and beverages with zero calories – will be hit with tax rates of as much as 30% to 67%. Prices will jump even higher when you add on the existing state and local sales taxes on beverages. Do you know that the price of a 2-liter will almost double after this tax goes through? Cook County elected officials will say that good jobs Prof. Allardice discovered articles in 150-year anniversary of the founding of When the Aleut Community of St. are the most important aspect of a healthy economy. MIKE BUDER When I newly list a home for sale the first thing that I counsel the homeowner about is showings. The other day one of my sellers said “I’ve listed my home and I can’t always leave when it’s being shown. Why are you so adamant that I not talk to buyers or their agents?” You’ve listed your home for sale and you’re facing some stiff competition in the South Suburbs of Chicago. You don’t want a potential buyer to walk because of a slip of the tongue. Lets go back to agency relationships. I am your agent. I represent you, the seller. But when potential buyers come through, their agents represent them. The buyer’s agent will most likely share all information gained from the seller, or the seller’s agent. I’ll give an example. I recently showed a house and the seller was home. I asked the seller if she was tired of people coming traipsing through her home. She answered, saying that we were only the second showing appointment she’d had since the house was listed and that she didn’t mind because she really wanted to move. Seems innocent enough, right? Wrong! That 2010 Mazda 3 Grand Touring Hatch-back, fully loaded, automatic, PS,DBPW, Alloy wheels, heateds e a t s, l e a t h e r i n t e r i o r, 6-disc. CD, Attenuated headlights, new-brakes, tires, tune-up, moon-roof, 110,000 miles. $6500. 708895-2474

told me a lot and I shared it with my buyer clients. The home had been on the market for 108 days and we were only the second appointment. What does that say; not much interest and a frustrated seller. I also shared the fact that the seller was anxious to move, so they might accept less if we offer a quick closing. That seemingly innocent response will give my buyers an advantage should they decide to make an offer. Don’t get me wrong; we’ll be upfront and honest in our dealings with buyers and their agents. But listing and showing your home is just a piece of the process. When we move onto the next step in this journey, negotiating an offer, lets make sure that we’re in the strongest position to negotiate the highest price for your home. Try to separate yourself from the showing if at all possible. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www. WOODROW WILCOX On May 30, 2017, I helped a client with a Medicare related medical bill problem. The client is from Crown Point, Indiana. The client brought to me a bill that he had received. He wanted me to review the bill and tell him if he should pay it or if the bill was a mistake. I checked the bill and found the problem. The medical service provider filed the claim incorrectly. The bill itself admitted that the claim was filed incorrectly. Our client owed nothing. Here, with a few edits to protect privacy, is the letter that I wrote for this client to the medical firm that billed him. Dear Representative, Our client brought a bill from your firm our office and asked us why he got the bill despite the fact that he has a Medicare supplement insurance policy. The bill is dated 04/03/2017 and seeks a balance of $95 on Account Number XXXXX for services rendered on 02/24/2017. YOUR BILL TO THE CLIENT EXPLAINS WHY THERE IS A BALANCE. YOU FILED THE CLAIM INCORRECTLY! The bill states that on 03/06/17, you filed the claim to Anthem BCBS as the primary insurer. He has a Medicare supplement policy and the insurance ID that he presented to your staff states that he has a Medicare supplement policy. The correct filing procedure is to send the

claim to Medicare because Medicare is the primary insurer and Anthem BCBS is the secondary insurer. THE BILL THAT YOU SENT TO OUR CLIENT PROVES THAT YOUR FIRM FILED THE CLAIM INCORRECTLY. THAT IS WHY THERE IS A BALANCE. YOUR MISTAKE IS NOT THE FAULT OF OUR CLIENT. If you are a Medicare contracted medical service provider, then you are obligated to file the claim correctly to Medicare AND NOT DIRECTLY TO THE PATIENT OR THE SECONDARY INSURER. Please, file this claim correctly. If our client has already paid on this bill, return the payment promptly because you have no right to keep it. The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency regularly “goes the extra mile” to help our clients in such situations. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizens who use Medicare? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.SolvingMedicare Problems.com) and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

Financial Advice Column

What Does Conservative Investing Mean to Older Investors? BOB KRYGSHELD If you’re a certain age, or getting close to it, you might hear something like this: “Now that you’re older, you need to invest more conservatively.” But what exactly does this mean? For starters, it’s useful to understand that your investment preferences and needs will indeed change over time. When you’re first starting out in your career, and even for a long time afterward, you can afford to invest somewhat aggressively, in stocks and stock-based investments; because you have time to overcome the inevitable short-term market drops. At this stage of your life, your primary concern is growth—you want your portfolio to grow enough to provide you with the resources you’ll need to meet your long-term goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But when you finally do retire, and perhaps for a few years before that, your investment focus likely will have shifted from accumulation to preservation. And this certainly makes some sense. Even though you may spend two, or even three, decades in retirement, you actually have many shorter time frames for withdrawing money—that is, selling investments—from your retirement accounts. In fact, you may be taking withdrawals every month— and you don’t want to be forced to sell investments when their price is down. Consequently, you’ll want a portfolio that’s less susceptible to market downturns. This means that you may need to reduce the percentage of stocks in your investment mix and increase your holdings in investments that have less growth potential but offer greater stability of principal, Antique bedroom chest circa 1930s $100; Little Wizard lantern, red glass, $65; 2008 school house dinner plate, new, $10. 708460-8308 19 in. new black tool box w/ trays $12; new car rug floor mats, $15; barbie dressed in Nascar gear $25. 708-4608308 Five 6 ft steel posts, $5 ea; 19 8 inch steel shelf brackets, $15; Sears USA 12 pc new wrench set, $35. 708-4608308 Generator 7.0 HP, three 120V receptacles, circuit breaker, 3.1 gallon tank, spark arrester 4050 starting watt output meter $180. 708-2101542

such as bonds. If you follow this formula, you will have become a more conservative investor. But this evolution—from aggressive to conservative— isn’t that simple. If you are retired for two or three decades, you will have to deal with inflation. And even at a relatively mild 3 percent annual inflation rate, your purchasing power will decline by about half in just 25 years. This is a real threat to retirees, who, can’t count on increases in earned income to overcome increasing costs of living. You will have to find your sources of rising income in your investment portfolio. One possibility: Dividendpaying stocks, some of which have increased their dividends for many years in a row. Still, like all stocks, these dividend payers can lose value from year to year, and they can also reduce, or even eliminate, dividends at any time. In other words, they aren’t risk-free—which brings us back to the question of how “conservative” of an investor you can really afford to be when you’re retired. There’s no simple answer. On one hand, you probably shouldn’t be as aggressive an investor as you were when you were much younger and still working. On the other hand, if you were to primarily own certificates of deposit and U.S. Treasury securities, you might face the prospect of outliving your money. Ultimately, you’ll need to maintain a balanced portfolio that helps you control risk today while providing you with growth opportunities for tomorrow. What Tree is That? Tree Identification Book from the Arbor Day Foundation Helps People Identify Tree Species The Arbor Day Foundation has a book that helps people identify trees in a simple, step-by-step process. The book, What Tree Is That?, is available for a $5 donation to the nonprofit tree-planting organization. What Tree Is That? is a fun, easy-to-use tree identification guide that features hand-drawn botanical illustrations highlighting the distinctive characteristics of many tree species. Nature lovers and professional arborists alike have called this pocket field guide a must-have, user-friendly resource. Its beautiful, full-color illustrations are in precise detail and depict natural colors, shapes, and textures so users can make a positive species identification in just a few easy steps. The Arbor Day Foundation offers this book to help people identify trees throughout the Eastern and Central regions of the United States. What Tree Is That? uses a unique step-by-step approach for identifying the species of each tree, explaining what to look for in the shape of the leaves, differences in the leaf stems and twig structures, and specific characteristics of fruits, flowers, buds, and bark. “Our What Tree Is That? Pocket guide is an ideal resource for developing a greater appreciation for trees,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The Arbor Day Foundation strives to help people enjoy and appreciate trees, and we feel our pocket field guide will do just that.” What Tree is That? is also available as an online interactive version at arborday.org. To obtain a tree identification guide in full color, send your name, address, and $5 for each guide to What Tree Is That?, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410. You can also order the book online at arborday.org.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are considering purchasing a home. What are some key points we need to discuss with a lender? Answer: Homeowners who don’t understand their mortgages could get into big financial trouble, but you can make certain you’re not one of them if you know the answers to the following six key points: 1. A third of mortgage holders in the United States don’t know the interest rate on their loan. This is a big mistake. Your interest rate makes a huge difference in the monthly payments and total interest you’ll pay. Shop for the best rate. 2. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) were a major contributing factor to the 2008 mortgage crisis, because many homeowners couldn’t pay their mortgages when rates were adjusted upward. Too many of these homeowners didn’t understand their loans. You don’t want to make that costly error. 3. Mortgage borrowers have the option to lower interest rates by paying discount points, which are essentially pre-paid interest. You pay more up front to buy down your interest rate. A point on a $200,000 loan would cost $2,000. 4. Homebuyers usually pay between 2% and 5% of a home’s purchasing price in closing costs. This is a big range, and you don’t want to pay more than necessary.

Apartments For Rent Apts. For Rent: Riverdale and Harvey 1 & 2 bdrm apts. Clean, carpeted, A/C. Heat included. Mike @ 708-3398068 or Catherine @ 708699-5900.

Shop these rates. 5. If you want to pay off your mortgage early or refinance with a different lender, you want the flexibility to make those financial choices. Unfortunately, some mortgages have prepayment penalties, which means you’d pay extra for the privilege of paying back what you owe. The reason they do this is to keep you paying interest on the balance for as long as possible. If a loan you’re considering includes a prepayment penalty, look for a different lender who won’t deprive you of the ability to make the right financial decisions for you. 6. Most mortgages give you 30 years to repay the balance, although 15-year mortgages are also somewhat common. On a 15 year mortgage, you pay less interest over the course of the loan, but your monthly payments will be higher. Neuromas

Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.
