Garden Getaways Featured in Upcoming 19th Annual SHGC Garden Walk
Maria and Roberto Brabo’s flowers –––––––––––––––––
The South Holland Garden Club will be featuring 6 gardens in their 19th annual Secret Gardens Garden Walk. All of the Gardens are in South Holland this year, though in years past, gardens from Thornton have also been featured. All of the gardens this year are quite wonderful. Of the six gardens, five have never been featured before. Paul and Debbie DeYoung have been working on their garden since they moved into their home some 20 years ago. What started out as a simple deck to extend their area to entertain, has turned into a series of decks, leisure areas. A lovely Wysteria vine provides shade over the pergola where bar seating overlooks the outdoor kitchen. The home sits on a corner lot, and the couple have made creative use of the property, using every inch to create a multi-level garden. Debbie has planted annuals that compliment the colors of the Moon Garden. Though they are long time residents of South Holland, the Brabo family moved into their current home only three years ago. Maria loves the colors of tropical annuals while Roberto is very proud of his vegetable garden. There is a stone patio is surrounded by colorful blooms in an assortment of containers. Perennials line the border of the backyard while song birds that live in an outdoor cage chirp happily. A small bit of paradise any homeowner would be proud of. Two of the featured homes this year sit along the banks of one of the small lakes in South Holland. Just a few houses from each other, Joy McElrath and neighbors Joe and Mary Crowley nominated each other to be in this year’s Garden Walk. Each with it’s own style, these two gardens exemplify what can be done with a little determination. The Crowley’s garden and outdoor entertainment spaces have been created from recycled wood. Using wood from discarded docks, piers, fencing, etc, Joe has managed to create benches, tables and planters giving their space a unique cozy getaway. What started as a Sun garden when they moved in back in 1988, has slowly turned into a shaded retreat. While Joe has been building the space, Mary has been shaping the garden with a variety of perennials and colorful annuals. Joy’s Garden is very much a work in progress. A resident since 2003, she has been working on her garden every year. Though she feels it’s still not what she’d like it to be, it is now a garden to be envious of. A grape vine hugs her back porch, while exotic plants started from seed from around the world sit in planters awaiting to bloom. This year’s Walk be on Saturday, June 24th, between 10am and 2pm. Tickets to are $5 and will be available at the main entrance by the gazebo in Veteran’s park on South Park Avenue on the day of the walk, rain or shine. Guided by the signs, the directions on the ticket will lead you through the village to the featured homes. The large brightly colored umbrellas will confirm you’ve arrived at your destination. Members of the SHGC will be manning stations outside each home where your ticket will be validated and the garden gates will be wide open, inviting you in. Please, join us for the high point of the Garden Club’s year of activities.

Flag Day at Park District Crafty Camp
From The Publisher
Socialism: A Short Story

ARLO KALLEMEYN An economics professor at an East Coast college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer. The professor then said, “OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.” After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied very little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too, so they also studied less. The
Participants in the Calumet Memorial Park District’s Crafty Camp celebrated Flag Day on June 14th at Memorial Park in Calumet City. –––––––––––––––––––––––
At Crafty Camp, kids enjoy crafts, games, music and fun! In addition to structured activities, there’s active play, the splash pad, trips, and the Crafty Parade. The kids received t-shirts and get a daily healthy lunch. Calumet Memorial Park District has activities for older kids and adults, too. second test average was a D! No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the new average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed. As Margaret Thatcher once observed: “The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.”

On Saturday, June 10, the Calumet Memorial Park District launched a beautification program for the district, starting with planting five red oak saplings at the Sandridge Community Center in Calumet City. The trees were a gift of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicagoland. Additional trees will be nurtured until they are planted at other parks in the future.

Patti’s Celebrates 31st Dance Recital Patti’s All-American celebrated 31 years of dance recitals this year. Sr. Vice President, Rhonda Zaluckyj says, “We couldn’t be more proud of our dancers. They, along with the staff at Patti’s, worked so hard to make it all come together.” Patti’s also hosted a Vendor and Craft Fair that day at Lake Central. Dance moms, dads, and other guests were able to visit over 40 vendor booths to purchase food, face-painting, gifts, and crafts. Patti’s All-American in Dyer has already hosted four dance recitals this month at Lake Central High School in St. John. The dancers ranged in age from 2 to 18, with various types of dance showcased including tap, ballet, jazz, pointe, lyrical, hip hop, and many preschool numbers. Under the direction of Dance Manager, Robin Arvanitis, the children performed to various songs and wore beautiful dance costumes while parents and loved ones watched. All four shows were a huge success, with Patti’s All-American staff, parents, and Lake Central staff all working together. Patti’s All-American is also celebrating 48 years in business this year. They teach gymnastics, tumbling, dance, Ninja Zone, Gym-N-Learn Educational Preschool, and swim. For more information call (219) 865-2274 or visit pattisallamerican.com

For over thirty years the Board of Trustees of South Suburban College has recognized outstanding art students by purchasing artworks of excellence. The artwork becomes part of the permanent art collection of South Suburban College for use in college halls, offices, and galleries. To date there are over 200 student works proudly displayed around campus. The selection process involves a jury of art faculty members who nominate artwork from the Fall and Spring Biannual Juried Student Art Exhibit. Each selection nominated by the jury is evaluated on its merit and as an example of excellence of outcomes the Art
& Design faculty have determined to be objectives for the art courses of the college. Finalists are selected at the end of the spring semester and are presented to the Board of Trustees at the May meeting. The public is welcome to visit SSC galleries at no charge. The Dulgar Gallery is on the first floor. SSC Galleries are open at minimum Mondays through Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. Two Area Schools Receive Advanced Placement Awards The Indiana Department of Education has announced the 2016 Advanced Placement (AP) Award Recipients, and two area schools made the list: Lake Central High School and Munster High School. To be selected, schools must have at least 25 percent of their 2016 graduating class receiving a 3, 4, or 5 on an AP exam. “Research tells us time and again taking and passing AP courses prepares students for the rigors of the college classroom,” said Dr. Jennifer McCormick, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. “I am pleased with the dedication these schools and their educators have shown in providing a head start into higher education for their students. I applaud the success of each student who worked hard to study and pass their advanced placement courses and exams.” AP is a research-backed method to facilitate student participation and success
through delivery of college-level courses and corresponding exams in the high school setting. Qualified students who pass AP courses enroll in college at higher rates than other groups of students, require significantly less remediation, and have higher average first year grade point averages and credit hours earned than other groups of students. For the 2015-16 school year, 11,904 graduating students passed at least one AP exam with a 3 or better. This is an increase of six percent over the year prior, and an increase of 114 percent in the past 10 years. An award ceremony will take place today, June 14, 2017, from 1:30-3:30 PM (ET) in the North Atrium of the Indiana Statehouse. The ceremony is open to the public and media is encouraged to attend. For a complete list of awarded schools, please visit: http://www. doe.in.gov/sites/default/files/news/ap_ recognition_event.pdf.

Garage Sales Outlying Indiana June 23-24, 9am-3pm. 221 & 302 Deer Trail, Schererville, IN. Garage sale. Two house’s. 8th graders recently participated in the annual Egg Drop, a spring tradition at St. Ann School. Each student constructed a protective vessel for their raw eggs from a list of approved items that included cardboard boxes, popsicle sticks, rubber bands, straws, paper cups, packing peanuts, and balloons. The Lansing Fire Department helped by bringing out the large crane and lifting science teacher Emily Yovich high into the air to drop
the eggs. Eight of the vessels successfully protected their fragile cargo. Pictured are the young engineers whose eggs survived the fall: Alexis Urbieta, Jimmy Wieczorek, Andrea Roa, Alexis Zamudio, Bobby Jurek, Ted Gray, Gabriel Terrazas, and Nourhan Mseeh. Congratulations to all! St. Ann School is now enrolling Pre-K through Grade 8 for the 201718 school year. FMI or to schedule a personal tour, please call 708.895.1661.
SSC Seeks Memorabilia Donations for Historic Display To celebrate the 90th Anniversary of South Suburban College (1927-2017), we are creating a college historic wall and display case for the main campus atrium that will commemorate our school from its beginnings as Thornton Community College in the 1920s to the institution we know today. We are asking for your help to make this happen by donating college memorabilia for our display case such as pennants, diplomas, graduation programs, buttons, photos, college branded clothing, advertising and more. Your artifact must be in good and stable physical condition and not already overrepresented (for example, we will only use one yearbook). All donations will become
the property of South Suburban College. Due to space limitations, we cannot accept all articles. If you have a college-related item from Thornton Junior College, Thornton Community College or South Suburban College that you would be willing to donate for our display case, please email Debbie Lamoureux at dlamoureux@ssc.edu. If available, please attach a photo. Or phone (708) 596-2000, ext. 2203. Thank you for your help with this project. Working together we can honor the institution that has made its place in the community and enriched the lives of so many.

Open Auditions At SCC For “Wrong Window” The PAC Rats Theatre Company of South Suburban College will hold open auditions for the comedy whodunit, “Wrong Window.” The auditions will take place on July 12 and 13, beginning at 7:00pm. Readings will be held in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the main campus at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, IL. Playwrights Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore pay tribute to Master of Horror Alfred Hitchcock with this spoof on his classic “Rear Window.” Off-and-on New York couple Marnie and Jeff enter an even more complicated phase of their relationship when they think they spy their cross-courtyard neighbor doing away with his wife. After they draw their torn curtain, the lady vanishes, and suspicion places murder beyond a shadow of a doubt. The bumbling witnesses sneak into their neighbor’s apartment—39 steps away—and the fun begins. Among multiple door-slammings, body-snatchings, and a frantic flashlight chase scene, two questions remain: Who killed Lila Larswald? And if she’s not dead, then who is? Director Pat Nevins of Homewood will cast 5 men and 3 women, of all colors and sizes, ranging in age from 18 to 70 plus. Nevins is planning evening rehearsals. Performances are scheduled for September 15 & 22, 2017 at 7:30pm and September 16, 23 & 24, 2017 at 2pm. Auditions are open to all community members as well as SSC students. Appointments and prepared audition materials are not necessary. Auditioners will read from scenes, which will be available at the time of auditions. Copies of the script are on reserve in the SSC library. Everyone is welcome to attend both auditions. Be prepared to list all conflicts with the rehearsal schedule. In addition to acting talent, the PAC Rats are also seeking volunteers who want to try their hands backstage. “Putting on a play takes a lot of hands,” said Nevins. “We hope that those who aren’t ready to step on stage will enjoy painting and building scenery, sewing costumes or making props.” For character descriptions, rehearsal schedule and more information, visit the Kindig Performing Arts Center’s website at http://learn.ssc.edu/theatre/ or email ssctheatre@ssc.edu. It continues to be a source of comfort and reassurance to me every time a disturbing headline surface regarding the current administration. I envision the Ancient of Days seated on His throne. He beckons me to come near and rest. I draw near and take a position at His feet, resting my head on His knee. He reminds me that He is still in charge regardless of what’s happening in the world. The “times of the gentiles” is nearing fulfillment—the kings and rulers are conspiring, and nations are gathering

together to do battle against the Lord. God laughs! I consider His response and I laugh too! Men plot to gain power, to control people, wealth, and countries; futile! Their leader (unknown to them) is the old serpent, Satan. His goal is to destroy humanity, God’s prized creation. But Satan is a fallen angel, a created, fallen angel and is already defeated. The only humans he’ll succeed in destroying are those who vehemently reject the LORD’s gift of salvation. At the appointed time the Lord will return—and the rulers of this world, along with the wicked and depraved, will become a feast for the birds to dine on. And God’s people will inherit the earth. I can face whatever comes today, tomorrow, next week, or next month because, I know the one who holds the future of mankind. And He who holds the future has me, and all those who belong to Christ, in the palm of His hand. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . MIKE BUDER Are Realtors worth their commission? I know that everyone in this economy is counting dollars and cents, and Realtors are no different. With the current market conditions, the shrunken buyer pool and significantly longer days on the market it costs more to market a property today than it ever has. So why are you asking your Realtor to reduce their commission when they sell your home? The fact is, after a Realtor takes the risk of marketing your home, (because they don’t get paid unless it sells), and cover all of the marketing expenses, the cost of their phone bill, postage, time, fuel, etc. Split the commission with the co-operating agent, pay their broker fees, pay their error and omission insurance, real estate board and MLS dues, the 1% reduction you have asked for is almost 50% of their profit. Also, consider this: while most agents are not HOME INSPECTORS —they sure know a lot about radon, HVAC systems, mold and more. While most agents are not LICENSED MORTGAGE OFFICERS—they sure know the ins and outs of getting buyers approved for financing. While most Home for rent: Chicago, Steger Matteson & Harvey locations. Single family residents. Section 8 welcome. Proven Real Estate Services LOC. 708-418-1833
agents are not LICENSED APPRAISERS—they sure know a lot about property values. While most agents are not ATTORNEYS—it’s amazing how much they know about real estate law. While most agents are not HOME IMPROVEMENT CONTRACTORS—they are often a wealth of knowledge when it comes to roofing, flooring, windows and more. While most agents are not LICENSED PSYCHOLOGISTS—they sure know a lot about family and marriage counseling. They get stuck in the middle of a lot of touchy disputes between spouses and family members. You have to be a very special person to last in this business. The true professionals that I know are without a doubt worth every penny of commission they earn. You really have no idea how hard a good Realtor works—until you’ve done it yourself. If you’re looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 4184444 Email: mikebuder@ remax.net. Website: www. BuderHomes.com. Mike Buder A Local Christian Businessman Home for rent: Dolton, 3bdrm. Ranch, 1-1/2 baths, side drive, carport, alarm, stove, refrigerator, washer/ dryer hook up. $1200/mo. 708-476-1819

The Natural Alternative
Reduce your Blood Pressure Naturally ANNA CONIGLIO, ND Healthy blood pressure is vital for maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. Blood is carried from the heart to all parts of the body in vessels, called arteries. Blood pressure is created by the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as it circulates. Each time the heart beats, it pumps out blood into the arteries. The force of the blood flows in the arteries is then at its highest and is called systolic pressure. In between beats, the heart is at rest; blood pressure is then at its lowest and is referred to as diastolic. Blood pressure changes throughout the day; it is lower when you sleep and rises as you wake up. It can also rise when you are excited, nervous, or active. High blood pressure, also called hypertension; is a chronic condition. Today, nearly one in three American adults has high blood pressure, can occur more common among people middle-age, elderly and obese people. It may run in families, but many people with a strong family history of high blood pressure never have it. High blood pressure is often referred to as silent killer-there are no signs or symptoms. You can have it for years and never know it, however the following may be indicators of high blood pressure and should not be ignored. Have you had one or more of the following? •Nose bleeds •Headaches •Dizziness •Racing or irregular heart beat Don’t let your blood pressure go unchecked. Lifestyle plays an important role in the control of high blood pressure. Consider taking the following actions: •Stress reduction. Stress management and relaxation techniques, such as meditation can help in controlling hypertension. •Weight reduction (to be attained through both dietary changes and exercise). •If you are a smoker, stop. •Significantly reduce or stop alcohol consumption. There are certain foods that lower blood pressure, or at least help you in that direction. •Decrease of salt intake and increase potassium rich food. •Avoid caffeine. •Decrease intake of sucrose/refined sugar. •Eliminate trans fatty acids from the diet. •Increase fiber intake. •Vegetables-5-7 servings per day. •Nuts/seeds/legumes The goal of high blood pressure diet is to increase nutrients and fiber, and decrease fat and cholesterol. Speaking Of Seniors
Two Clients Need a Lawyer WOODROW WILCOX On May 31, 2017, I helped two clients who now need a lawyer. Is there a lawyer in northwest Indiana who wants to help seniors who were wronged by Medicare and/ or insurance companies? Here is a brief description of the two cases. A woman from De Motte canceled a Medicare supplement policy with a major insurance company as of a certain date. The major company was in the process of changing from one computer system to another during that time and made some important mistakes. It continued to notify Medicare that it should get claims for our client, but when Medicare sent the claims, it refused to pay anything. At the same time, because Medicare was getting false information about the first insurance company, the insurance company that issued the new policy to our client was not getting or paying medical bill claims. A man from Crown Point enrolled to start Medicare on July 1, 2016. He applied in plenty of time for Medicare to issue an ID card with the coverage date starting July 1. But, Social Security and / or Medicare government workers did not get around to issuing and sending a Medicare ID card to our client until the spring of 2017. Without a Medicare ID card that showed he had Part A and Part B coverage, the Medicare supplement policy that he wanted through our Walnut wood spoon rack with 18 souvenir spoons, $20; Seth Thomas metronome (new in box) $8. 708-331-2444
agency could not become effective. Medicare did make the ID card that it sent in the spring effective retroactively from July 1, 2016. But, from July 1, 2016 until the ID card arrived, the man would have been without any insurance except that he paid thousands of dollars to get coverage from a COBRA policy. The failure of the federal employees to act in a professional and timely manner cost our client thousands of dollars. Do you think that the federal Medicare system works well? Our clients were financially harmed by it and they are looking for an attorney to help them recover. If an attorney helps our clients, I’d be happy to write updates or reports of success for our clients and give the attorney credit in the articles that I write. Our clients were wronged by others. I helped them at no charge because this insurance agency regularly “goes the extra mile” for our clients. But, there is only so much that I can do. Now, our clients need help from an attorney. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www.Solving MedicareProblems.com) and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com. Batter y powered wheel chair, regular wheel chairs. 312-218-0893

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I live in a retirement community and would like start flying an American Flag outside my condo. But the condo has strict rules on what can be hung —flags are restricted. Is this against my rights as an American? Answer: You have rights as an American and you have obligations as someone who has voluntarily agreed to accept the rules and regulations of your community. In the case of flag displays, your association should read the “Freedom to Fly the American Flag Act of 2005.” It explains in polite language that flag displays cannot be banned, but there may be display limitations as to time and place. Your HOA can reasonably restrict the time, place, and manner of your flag display (provided the restrictions are to protect a substantial interest of the association). For example, your HOA can ban a U.S. flag that might be a danger, such as one on a rickety flagpole over a public sidewalk. The HOA probably also has the right to prohibit a flag so large

it blocks a neighbor’s view. But, ultimately, the burden will be on the association to show why it has a “substantial interest” to formulate any restrictions, not an attractive position to defend. You also have the right to run for association office so that the rules can be changed or revoked. The American flag is emblematic of the country and suggested restrictions regarding its display will be widely seen as controversial, offensive and needlessly provocative. As a matter of common sense, condo associations would be smart to allow the display of the American flag without restriction. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. V.B.

HOYA HOYA — POL K A M A N I A AT MOHAWKS IN HAMMOND: If you wait all year for Polka Mania to come to Northwest Indiana, you weren’t disappointed on Sunday June 11, 2017 at the Mohawk Club g rou nds on Ca lu met Avenue, where hundreds of revelers came out on a hot, sunny Sunday afternoon to listen to wall to wall Polka music and feast on polish food from Steve’s. It was a delicious combo of polish sausage, sour kraut, stuffed cabbage, pierogi (cheese or kraut) and sweet/sour noodles (courtesy of Polish Chef Suzette Kubacki). Washed down with a cold Polish beer, it was as close to heaven as one could get. Noted in the crowd enjoying the day was one Gerry Tarka, Calumet City Treasurer, who was meeting and greeting Polish friends from Calumet City. The Mohawk has been in existence for 4 generations, with each family joining the relatives who came before them to keep it going. Pictured here are Nick Zwier, President of the Mohawks along with Alan Pala, the club manager. In another pix in the outdoor kitchen are Joe Junkins, Dave Gromka and Kevin Z braving the heat to bring the delicious goodies to the hungry fe st go er s. T he Moh aw k ow n s t he clubhouse building, a former restaurant, and the picnic grounds which get much use over the summer. A fun, lively group! *** CALUMET CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO RENA ME BUILDING — C A LUMET C I T Y H I S T OR IC A L S O C I E T Y A N D MUSEUM: It was announced recently that the building at 760 Wentworth now officially belongs to the Historical Society. In November, 2016 Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush and t he entire Cit y Council unanimously approved the building and it’s use for the Historical Society as it’s “permanent home”. The building had been used for various different entities in the past, as the Calumet City Public Library most recently. Sig n i f ica nt repa i rs a re u nder way to make the building viable and up to code. Museum hours are Thursdays 1-4 p.m. and the 2nd Sunday of each month from 1-4 p.m. For more information contact them at 708-832-9390 or email them at calcityhistory@aol.org or visit them at www.historicalsoceity.org. The HS is in it’s 43rd year. *** “C A N T HE TA X” BR INGS IL L INOIS G OV E R NOR BRUC E R AU N E R T O HEGEWISCH: The spate of new ta xes being imposed by Cook County brought out the ire of a local businessman who contacted t he gover nor’s of f ice a nd invited him to stroll down the small, but lively business district in the Chicago neighborhood of Hegewisch two weeks ago. Businessman Bob Wisz, who owns Doreen’s Gourmet Pizza in Calumet City, invited Gov. Rauner visit “downtown” He ge w i s c h a nd s e e w h at t he ne w beverage tax would do, for example, to the two local merchants there: Baltimore Foods and Eric’s Foods. The visit made the 6 p.m. news and loca l ta lk radio shows. A ll agreed that the ta x would
harm the businesses in Chicago, and just send consumers over the state line to Hammond Indiana. This regressive tax was written about by Shopper Publisher Arlo Kallemeyn in his weekly column in last week’s paper. Arlo has made no secret about his disdain for the high property taxes - and sales taxes in Illinois. He may even be considering a run for public office to bring his brand of common sense to Springfield! *** COLDWELL BANKER HOSTS MID-YEAR SUMMIT: Brokers, agents, staff, Burnet Title and vendors who service the real estate industr y in t he sout h suburbs and northwest Indiana all gathered on Thursday June 15, 2017 at the Orland Civic Center to learn about emerging forces (disruptors) in real estate, team building, digital marketing and giving back! Among the speakers were Kathy Ka lnes, sen ior Vice President, Ch r is Haran, VP, Operations, Nina Fotopoulos, senior VP, Jaime Cronin, market services representative (and a digital whiz kid), Aimee Lerner, Marketing and Fran Brohe, President and COO who spoke freely about the problems the State of Illinois faces and how it affects the consumer and the Broker. Because Coldwell Banker is committed to giv ing back, v ia t he Coldwell Banker Charitable Foundation Pa r t ners, t hree representat ives f rom non prof it s spoke br ief l y on t hei r subjects. Haven House of Ha mmond is a 24/7 family shelter devoted to first getting victims of domestic abuse out of harm’s way and then back on their feet in order to become productive citizens. South Suburban Family Shelter out of Homewood offers the same fine help and Housing Opportunities, Inc. networks with local communities to find housing for t hose in need whet her by fa mily imbalance or poverty. The daylong event was highlighted by raff les and prizes along with the Realtor pep talk. Among the agent panels were Rommi Achterhof Orland; A llison Ascher, Bradley; Noe Favela, Central DuPage; Gina Guarino, Schererville; Ror y Hertzberg, Bradley; Sean Murray, Orland Park and Kathy Slovick, Glen Ellyn. The speakers left us with some words of wisdom: Be well–Stay Strong–Keep Focused. Great advice no matter what our career path or lifestyle. *** SOLTIS FAMILY DISTILLERY TO OPEN IN THORNTON: The corner of Margaret Street and the 400 block will soon house a distillery that had it’s roots in the town in the 1850s. Former brewer Joe Soltis’ great grandson Steve Soltis, along with his partners Andrew Howell, Jake Weiss and Micah Kibodeau, will open Soltis Family Spirits in July 2017. The property has a storied history that dates back to the Prohibition era when it was used as a speakeasy for the beer being brewed there. Over the years, the location has had a variety of reincarnations, from restaurants to more recently auto repair. There had been houses built there and added upon and finally torn down. That corner of Thornton has ra ised much curiosity over the years as the buildings and uses changed. Stories in both the Chicago Tr ibune a nd more recent ly, Chicago Magazine have outlined some of the fascinating background of the place. Many have thought it haunted over the years as it sits over an artesian well that is said to have produced some of the best tasting beer ever. The story in the Tribune noted John Kubina, president a nd t rea su rer of T hor nton Brew i ng saying ‘there was something different in the water there that makes better beer.’ Deciding to go against the ‘grain’ (pun intended) the Soltis Family group decided that making whiskey, gin and spiced rum would be a better fit for the 18,000 square foot property which will offer tastings and tours. Steve Soltis has been working on t his unique entity for 3 years. It will be interesting to see the ‘blank canvas come to life.
