Every spring, St. Ann joins the other Lansing schools to participate in the Slam Dunk Hunger Out of Lansing Food Drive, a component of the Annual Roundball Classic 5th Grade Basketball Tournament. This year, St. Ann students gathered the highest average food donation to win the overall competition, with the Kindergarten class dominating the in-
house challenge by sending in an average of 15 food items per student! Their reward was an ice cream social, which the children enjoyed outside at the end of the school year with their teachers. St. Ann School is open to all and encourages a giving spirit in its Pre-K through 8th Grade students. FMI or to schedule a personal tour, please call 708.895.1661.

NOTICE OF SALE OF SURPLUS PROPERTY Thornton Township is interested in disposing of surplus and obsolete property. The sale of the property will be Saturday, July 8, 2017, in the Thornton Township Zap Garage, 425 West 169th Street, South Holland, Illinois, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sale specifications and criteria:
(Statepoint) Nearly half of all Americans participate in at least one outdoor activity each year, according to statistics from the Outdoor Foundation. And while many of those exercising outdoors take necessary precautions to reduce their risk for injury, they are not always as dedicated to skin protection. During the long days of summer, outdoor enthusiasts should take the following steps to avoid bites, burns and more. Mosquito Protection Mosquito bites are not just a nuisance; they are associated with Dengue Fever, Zika, West Nile and Chikungunya viruses. Ward off itch, discomfort and more serious threats by avoiding standing water whenever possible, and dressing in loose long sleeves and pants. Use a DEET-free repellent such as BullFrog Mosquito Coast, which repels mosquitoes for up to eight hours. The formula is a particularly good option for outdoor enthusiasts. Unlike DEET formulations, there is no need to wash it off when returning indoors. Different from repellent alone, it also offers SPF 30 sun protection, so you can pack light when you’re on the move. Sun Protection One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the
course of a lifetime, and men ages 15 to 39 are 55 percent more likely to die of melanoma than women in the same age group. However, a recent survey from Bullfrog Sunscreen found that while 85 percent of male outdoor sports enthusiasts ages 18 to 54 claim their prime motivation for engaging in outdoor sports is “health and wellness,” two in 10 respondents do not use sunscreen at all. Of the remaining 80 percent who said they do use sunscreen, 56 percent use it only occasionally. Those spending time outdoors should wear a hat and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside, and then reapply at least every two hours or after swimming, sweating and immediately after towel drying. A breathable, sweat-resistant formula like BullFrog Land Sport is ideal for tennis, golf and other land sports, while an advanced waterresistant formula should be used for swimming and other water sports. More skin safety tips can be found at BullFrogSunscreen. com. While the warmer months are a great time for all your favorite outdoor activities, from hiking to swimming to camping, this time of year comes with its own health hazards. Luckily, there are many steps you can take to protect skin. PHOTO SOURCE: (c) Maridav - Fotolia.com

Would You Eat Plastic? ARLO KALLEMEYN I don’t think any of us would buy a nice grilled steak made out of plastic the next time we fire up the grill. Plastic has no nutritional value and there is a good chance it would make us sick. Unfortunately biologists are now finding microbeads of plastic in the oceans and even the great lakes. I never heard of microbeads until last week. It turns out that some soaps and shower gels use the plastic microbeads to give our skin an extra scrubbing. The proper name for these beads is ‘polyethylene’. These microbeads are washed down the drain and end up in the oceans and surrounding fresh water lakes. The tiny plastic pellets then do what they do best—attract dirt and chemicals. The chemicals stick to these plastic pellets just like the dirt from our hands stick to them—we get nice clean hands, but of course there is more to the story. Fish are swimming around in the oceans and lakes and are confusing these microbeads for food. So the fish eat the chemical-coated plastic beads and probably even feel full after a good meal of them. They are probably even easier for the fish to catch than minnows who are not interested in being on the menu of a fish higher
on the food chain. So the fish eat the microbeads and since plastic does not biodegrade, the plastic may be absorbed into the fish’s body. Scientists don’t know exactly happens with these microbeads after they are eaten. Lorena Rios-Mendoza, a chemist with the University of Wisconsin said, “We don’t know if the problem stops with the fish or if we eat the fish, the problems are with us now. Plastic doesn’t biodegrade so once it’s in the water, it doesn’t just disappear. The lifespan of microplastics is unknown so it can take years for it to completely leave the ocean or lake, if it ever does.” The good news is that microbeads have been brought to the attention of corporations like Procter and Gamble and Unilever. These two companies are to be commended since they have committed to replacing the plastic beads with an alternative in the next few years. If you don’t want to wait that long, you can do a little research online and find out if your favorite soap contains microbeads made from polyethylene. Back in the day we used a rough washcloth to get our hands extra clean. The fish will thank us if we go back to those days. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of clean water.

Choosing a Lender MIKE BUDER Interest rate is the wrong reason to choose a lender. In the almost 2,500 transactions that I have been involved in since first being licensed in the early 1980’s, anytime there was a problem with the mortgage and the buyer was asked how they chose their lender, they almost always stated the bank was chosen for quoting the best rate. On the flipside when the mortgage officer did a great job the buyers would reply that the lender was referred from a trusted source. Sadly, the “best rate” is a myth. The factors that go into locking a mortgage rate include down payment, credit rating, debt to income ratio, length of the loan, and a variety of other matters which makes quoting a prospective borrower a rate on the first meeting without a full application irresponsible at best. Published rates are based on assumptions that are so ideal that most borrowers either don’t qualify or must pay higher costs to achieve. The smart consumer will make an effort to find the best, most trustworthy, service oriented lender they can find, who will work hand
R E S T O R AT I O N MINISTRIES
in hand with the real estate brokers, appraisers, title and attorneys. A lender who will be able to troubleshoot and navigate obstacles as they arise and to assist the borrower in “locking in” their rate at the correct time. This not only ensures a smooth transaction, it shields the borrower from bait and switch moves, junk fees, last minute changes and lack of accountability that we often see in web-based bargain lenders. Imagine that. You choose your lender the same way you choose your real estate agent, attorney, doctor or plumber: the best person for the job. The numbers take care of themselves because a true professional will always watch out for you. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. B u d e r H o m e s . com. Don’t Let Your Investments Take a “Vacation” BOB KRYGSHELD It’s summer again – time for many of us to take a break and possibly hit the open road. But even if you go on vacation, you won’t want your investments to do the same – in summertime or any other season. How can you help make sure your portfolio continues to work hard for you all year long? Allow me to offer a few suggestions: Avoid owning too many “low growth” investments. As you know, different investments have different characteristics and can help you in different ways. For example, you typically own stocks because you want them to grow in value so that you can eventually sell them for a profit. Other investments, provide you with a regular source of income and stability of principal – two valuable contributions to your portfolio. However, investments like CDs don’t offer much in the way of growth. So if you own too many of them, you might be slowing your progress toward your important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. You can maximize the productivity of your portfolio by owning a variety of investments – domestic stocks, international stocks, corporate bonds, U.S. Treasury securities, CDs and more. How much of each investment should free. is not alyou Alcohol own? ideal investment mix may change, but you’ll likely need at least some growth potential at every stage of your life. Don’t let your portfolio go “unsupervised.” Your investment portfolio can be subject to “drift” if left alone for extended time periods. Suppose you think your holdings should be made up of 70% stocks, but due to strong gains, your stocks now make up 80% of your portfolio. This development could lead to a risk level that feels uncomfortably high to you. That’s why you should review your portfolio at least once a year, possibly with the help of a financial professional, to check your progress and make adjustments as needed. Don’t stop at the nearest “resting place.” Some people hope that if they can get that one “winner,” they will triumph in the investment arena. But the ability to “get rich quick” is much more of a myth than a reality. True investment success typically requires patience, persistence and the resilience to continue investing even during market downturns. In other words, investing is a long-term endeavor, and you need a portfolio that reflects this reality. The investment moves you make today may pay off for you decades from now. You need to establish your goals and keep them constantly in mind as you invest. Hopefully, you will enjoy a pleasant vacation sometime this summer. But your investment portfolio Auditions for Upcoming shouldn’t take time off.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We just sold our home. It was stressful, but our Realtor has this stress with every deal. What do you enjoy about selling Real Estate? Answer: Let me answer it this way: We are quite sure that we have the best job in the world! It’s not an easy job by any means. It takes dedication, patience, creativity, resourcefulness and a good sense of humor to do what we do each and every day. But when you take a step back, you realize that there are not many people who can say it is their job to help make dreams come true!
So, as we drive through our neighborhood this Summer or head off to the home of a family member or friend, we will be sure to pay special attention to the smells from the BBQ grills and the sound of laughter from children running through a sprinkler or playing baseball in the street. Listen to neighbors chatting, dogs barking, lawn mowers humming and marching bands leading the parade, and then we’ll take a moment to smile and feel proud knowing that we have helped a countless number of people find the place they call HOME!

STATEMENT FROM THE MAYOR OF LANSING, ILLINOIS Lansing has been the focus of intense media scrutiny for much of the past week. The events that unfolded last Saturday in the front yard of an off-duty police officer remind us that we as a community face many of the same issues confronting neighborhoods across the nation. I have spent the majority of time this week speaking to Lansing residents in person, on the phone, via email, and viewing postings on social media. There is one common thread residents have expressed: to understand all the facts in the case involving an off-duty police officer and juveniles in the front yard of the officer’s home. There are many elements to a police investigation, this much I know being a former Lansing police officer myself. Investigations are not completed overnight and, in the end, the goal is to arrive at a reasonable conclusion based on the facts in the case. Therefore, I am taking the following two courses of action:

I am ordering the investigation be turned over to an outside governmental agency. This will ensure the investigation remains independent and avoids any appearance of impropriety. At my direction, the officer involved in the incident has been placed on immediate administrative leave pending the outcome of the independent investigation.
I am thankful that no individual involved in the altercation was seriously injured or killed. I am also thankful that no weapons were drawn or shots fired. This is not to minimize the video which has disturbed many residents of Lansing and citizens across the country, but rather to recognize that, although the images are disturbing, it is fortunate the incident did not rise to the level of similar events that have occurred elsewhere. As your Mayor, my bottom line remains clear, and it is the same as yours. I want all the facts reviewed, I want an objective conclusion to be reached, and I want recommendations on what corrective actions may need to be taken. I will be closely monitoring all facets of this investigation as it moves forward, and I will communicate the findings in a transparent and timely fashion. Sincerely,
Mayor Patricia L. Eidam

ANNA M. CAISON Jesus spoke the above phrase in describing the cynics of His generation when they asked Him to prove Himself by healing people in His own community as He did in other places. It wasn’t that He didn’t want to heal the sick in His own neighborhood, He wanted to! It was the town people’s rejection of Him that prevented their healing. Whenever a Black person says, “Black Lives Matter,” the choose-to-be-blind person, to trivialize the killing of black people by law enforcement, will say, “If Black Lives Matter, then stop your people from killing themselves!” Black on Black crime is devastating to the Black Community just as White on White crime is devastating to the White Community. The same is true for other communities in which crimes are committed against one’s own ethnicity. And within the Black Community there is a combined effort of religious leaders and activists working toward a resolve. Black Lives Matter is different from Black on Black crime. It’s about why a White female student can walk down the hallway of the University she attends swinging a sword, is ignored; but a Black male student walking down the same hallway with a glue gun in his hand, is perceived a threat, resulting in a police dog, SWAT unit, tank and police units called in to apprehend him.

This is about an out of uniform, Black St. Louis police officer, who last week, was shot by his White colleague because he didn’t recognize the officer and feared for his life. Last year, a similar incident happened in Maryland and the Black officer was killed by his White colleague who also stated he feared for his life. This is about police officers disarming mass-murderer James Holmes of an assault rifle, shot gun and two .40 caliber Glocks without firing a single shot; but 2 officers fired a total of 5 bullets into a distraught 100-pound, pregnant, Black woman holding two knives because they feared for their life. Twelve years old Tamir Rice playing in the park with a toy gun, killed by police. Trayvon Martin, killed because he was wearing a hoodie. John Crawford picks up a toy gun in Walmart and is gunned down and killed. The list goes on and on. It’s time for our nation to admit that law enforcement is bias against Black people, and tear down the false narrative that labels Black people as dangerous, inherent criminals with violent behavior. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Hospital Never Filed Claim
For sale: Ball & Mason canning jars, all sizes, Jelly, pints & quarts, regular or wide mouth, reasonable. 708-474-4964
WOODROW WILCOX On June 7, 2017, an elderly woman visited my office to discuss a medical bill problem. She is from Hobart, Indiana. She brought a bill from a hospital in Illinois for my review. The bill claimed that a charge of $5,005 had been filed with Medicare and that the balance which she owed was $1,143.19. I reviewed the papers that she brought and believed that there was a problem with this bill. It just did not seem correct to me. So, with the client, I started making phone calls to investigate the bill. In our phone call to the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company, we learned that Medicare never sent a claim for $5,005 to the insurance company. In our phone call to Medicare, we learned that the hospital never sent a claim for $5,005 to Medicare. The hospital was violating Medicare rules by billing the senior citizen directly instead of filing the claim with Medicare. I wrote a letter to the hospital and had our client sign the letter because there were details with the letter
Miscellaneous Items For Sale For sale: Factory Discount Store. EZ Credit up to $3000. Mattresses $78, Futons $128, Bunkbeds $178, Dinette sets $168, Bedrm. sets $398, 20 pc. 3room packages $1695. Free Layway. Like us on Facebook. 708-371-3737 or w w w . factorybeddingfurniture. com
which only the client has a legal right to send through the mail. It was a clear case of someone at the hospital making a mistake and not following the rules. I believe that the error will be corrected and that our client will owe nothing and save $1,143.19 because I helped her. All the help that I gave her was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” to help our clients in such Medicare medical bill problem matters. If your insurance agent or agency does not “go the extra mile” for senior citizen clients, maybe you should switch to one that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped seniors save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book Solving Medicare Problem$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF DR. JOHN SULLIVAN SR: Longtime resident of South Holland, a dentist there for 50 years and founder (along with his wife Barb) of Spirit of God Fellowship, Restoration Ministries and a South Holland Trustee passed away Friday June 23rd, 2017. The beloved Pastor, Dentist, civic figure and Friend was given a sendoff befitting a Rock Star. Judging by the sheer numbers of those who came to pay their respects Tuesday June 27th, 2017 to the popular local, the velvet ropes leading up to the casket traveled around the entire perimeter of the Spirit of Fellowship Great Hall and out into the lobby. Thousands of pictures of Dr. Sullivan’s life in all 4 areas of his interest-family, civ ic, denta l a nd church oriented were strung from the rafters to the f loor depicting how ver y much he contributed to the well being of his patients, his flock his community and his beloved family. Far from it being a somber event, the church was filled with laughter and stories Salvation for so many lost souls who found their way back to productive lives through Su l l iva n a nd h is chu rch a nd it’s offspring of Harvey House and Tabitha House.

Village of Thornton’s 11th Annual
ARKET PARK in the
Jimboos of Thornton catered to hungry members and their guests. Patrick Rush was guest speaker who talked about marketing and social media and how to make our individual ‘brands’ st a nd out . Pat r ick work s a s t he marketing director for John Kasperek, CPA in Calumet City and has a solid background of what we used to call ‘public relations’ now marketing, in his impressive resume. The seemingly overnight switch to social media has lots of business people stumped as to what to do--but Patrick bridged the gap beautifully and noted that both print advertising and social media are still needed to get the word out of our individual businesses. Pictured here are myself, VP of the Chamber, Jane Rowland President and Cindi Hall, Secretary. Our busineses are Coldwell Banker, Calumet City Public Library a nd Z oom C le a n C a r Wa sh respectively. The next meeting will be held in August and the annual car show i n R iver Oa k s on Sat u rday September 16th (with the 17th as rain date). ***

CHRISTOPHER KENNEDY DROPS IN TO UAW 551-HAT’S OFF TO THE 10TH WARD: The fabled Kennedy Clan has one more fa m i ly member who is t hrow ing his hat into t he Illinois Ring—the Governor’s Office. Kennedy and his toothy smile showed up at last Saturday’s Hat’s off to the 10th Ward, thrown by the Friends of Alderwoman Sue Sadlowski Garza. The party took place at the Union Hall of UAW 551 13550 S. Torrence Avenue right next to the vast Marina on the riverfront. Finally, we can access that part of Torrence now that the bridge is open. What a relief. Sue wanted Kennedy to get up and say a few words, but he declined. In private conversation to many there he was cordial, polite and pretty well informed about the area on the SE side. He is pictured here with two gals who run the local Hegewisch News, Helen Carson and Rose Zivat who are wearing hats made from the recent editions of the paper made into A scot t y pe chapeaus. T hey were amazingly beautiful, but of course had been gussied up with tulle, f lowers, ribbons and lace! Lots of locals and union types from all over the south east side and south suburbs were also on hand for the party. Food came from all the nearby restaurants and Calumet Bakery. ***

SHOPPER/N2N CORRESPONDENT PHYLLIS DREWNO AGREES WITH ARLO: Regarding the new tax on soft drinks in Cook County—Arlo wrote a hard hitting column a few weeks ago about the new tax which was supposed to take effect on July 1, 2017. One of his comments was “If you are tried of being taxed to death please contact a Cook County Commissioner and tell them to CAN THE TAX!” He also told of the dire news in Philadelphia which implemented a similar tax recently— they experienced a 50% decline in sales of soft drinks and more than 400 jobs lost due to layoffs and reduced hours. Call CC Commissioners Debra Simms, 312-603-6381 or 708-371-4251 email: dsims@cookcountygov.com or Stanley Moore-773-783-2412 Email stanley. moore2@cookcountyil.gov

Thank you South Holland for allowing me the privilege of serving you for the last 20 years. Looking forward to another 20! My husband & I had listed our home with 1 realtor & had no luck selling our home. We came across Danny’s ad in The Shopper. He came to our home & impressed us greatly.
