dedicated teacher with a heart for students. He is in his 32nd year of teaching, with 22 of those at Thornridge High School in Dolton, IL. Malopsy-Fortier also knew Conry was not your run-of-the-mill foreign language teacher. His Chicago accent notwithstanding, Conry was born in Ireland and attended school in both Spain and France. He later went on to teach French in Spain, and Spanish in France. He gained degrees in foreign languages and philosophy and has traveled extensively, usually taking a group of students to Europe each year. He takes a holistic, immersive approach to teaching, emphasizing reading and writing proficiency as well as conversation, with a particular focus on workplace proficiency. His students are not just American, but also African and Asian, and he’s pleased to say not a few have gone on to use their language skills in their jobs, including government service. His students even find that their English skills have sharpened by the time they finish his courses. Many students proceed to enroll at Chicago State; in particular, a number have gone into the nursing program. In its mission to make students college-ready, Outlook Academy offers a college entry course that specifically prepares students for the requirements and expectations of college. Outlook Academy is a program of Thornton Township High Schools District 205, in partnership with the Continuing Education Department of Chicago State University, to provide students with a pathway to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. The college setting and additional program assistance provides the extra boost to get back on track with their peers. The District – University partnership provides students with one-stop access to higher education and workplace development information and programs. For more information, contact 773-995-2578 or 773-995-2577.

Leo Conry is known for his passion for helping students succeed. He teaches French and Spanish to Outlook Academy students. ______________________________

A visit to the Chicago State University home of Outlook Academy takes you through the hustle and bustle of school life. Classes have just let out and groups of students are talking as they dash to the cafeteria in a neighboring building. Small groups fill comfy chairs in the common area, texting or talking quietly on their phones. In an empty classroom, a student takes advantage of the quiet to get a jump on his homework. One flight of stairs down, a student walks into the office and asks for a shirt. He promptly receives a dark green T-shirt with the white logo of Outlook Academy across the front; it seems nearly everyone is wearing one. The office is busy, with students, teachers, and staff coming and going. The air is purposeful, but friendly. It feels like, well, a high school. Outlook Academy has only two years under its belt, but has already graduated well over 200 students. In fact, there is a new graduating class every nine weeks, including the summer months; the program has added Friday classes, and is aggressively recruiting new students. Outlook Academy continues to expand, offering a full high school curriculum including electives such as poetry, political science, intro to cartooning, ROTC, computer programming, and swimming. Chicago State professors teach Outlook Academy classes, which helps keep the bar high, while also easing the transition from high school to college should the students choose to enroll as Chicago State students upon graduation. Outlook Academy students have the advantage of already being familiar with the campus and already knowing the instructors. One of those instructors is Leo Conry, who teaches Spanish and French. Program Coordinator Patricia MalopsyFortier reached out to him personally, asking him to teach at Outlook Academy. Many students lacked the necessary foreign language credits required for entry into college. And Malopsy-Fortier knew Conry’s reputation as a skilled and

With Record Summer Heat, Kids Need Free Meals More Than Ever To Keep Cool Given that humans must burn more calories over the summer to keep cool, record temperatures this summer will further increase the need for free summer meals for low-income children funded by the federal government. That is why the nonprofit group Hunger Free America is now ramping up its efforts to publicize the USDA National Hunger Hotline—which can be reached at 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE (for Spanish)—through which callers can locate summer meals sites for kids, food pantries or soup kitchens for families, and/or other government and private meals programs near them. Even though children need just as much, if not more, nutrition during the summer months, in Illinois, only 11.7 percent of kids who receive free and reduced school meals, receive summer meals. Raising awareness about this program is the single greatest

Hunger Free America also just launched, www.hungervolunteer.org. a state-of-the art volunteer matching portal to make it easier to mobilize the unique talents and skills of each individual volunteer in order to take the biggest bite out of hunger. Hunger Free America’s CEO Joel Berg said, “Now everyone can get—or give—help. If you’re hungry or at risk of hunger, it can be a daunting task to obtain food and benefits. The hunger hotline can immediately help connect families with food providers in their area. We are starting a national awareness campaign and want to make sure that people who need help can get it quickly and easily. We also want to make sure that all Americans can give back, by volunteering in ways that move beyond soup kitchen work to attack hunger at its root causes. ”

A Spiritual Awakening ARLO KALLEMEYN We are all faced with many challenges during times like these. One way to stay positive is to focus on the “good” while minimizing the “bad.” Following is a list of 12 things that will let you know that you are moving in the right direction: 1. An increased tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen. 2. Frequent attacks of smiling. 3. Feelings of being connected with others and nature. 4. Frequent overwhelming episodes of appreciation. 5. A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than from fears based on past experience. 6. An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment. 7. A loss of ability to worry. 8. A loss of interest in conflict. 9. A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others. 10. A loss of interest in judging others. 11. A loss of interest in judging self. 12. Gaining the ability to love without expecting anything in return. —Author Unknown Sincerely, Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of staying positive. As many members of the community know, Diane, a member of Trinity, has a long road ahead of her as she pushes through her daily rehab from injuries sustained over a year ago when she was the victim of a horrific, senseless crime. The picnic was open to the community and everyone in attendance enjoyed the good weather, fellowship, and fun. Diane was very grateful to see so many of her friends and reconnect with old ones. Public Urged to Donate Blood to Stem Critical Shortage Blood supplies across the country remain at dangerously low levels after a severe decline in blood donations leading up to and following the July 4th holiday. In an effort to rebuild supplies and be prepared for unexpected events, blood banks, including Illinois’ LifeSource, have called on the community to come forward and give blood this week and throughout the remainder of the summer. Over the past few weeks, LifeSource has seen less than a 3 day supply in critical blood types such as O-negative and O-positive. Donations from O-negative donors, the universal blood type, are especially important this time of year due to increased accidents and trauma cases. Additionally, platelet donations, which have a shelf-life of only five days, are in high demand after a slow holiday week. However, donors of all types

are needed. In July alone, a shortfall is projected of 1,700 donations per week within the Institute for Transfusion Medicine (ITxM) system. Over 500 more donations per week are needed just within the Chicago service area to meet the current need. The significant nationwide decline in donations has led to a coordinated call on the public to donate blood. According to Eva Quinley, Regional Executive Director of LifeSource, “Patients, their families and the hospitals in the Chicago area that we serve depend on us to deliver on our promise to provide a safe and ample blood supply.” She stresses, “The decline in blood donation numbers is the worst I have ever seen. We need donors to give blood now to help reverse the decline. It only takes about an hour to save up to

three lives by giving blood.” From Monday, July 10th through Sunday, July 16th, all LifeSource community donor centers will be open extended hours to accommodate more donors. Visit http://www. lifesource.org/donate-blood/where-to-donate/ to find your nearest donor center or a mobile blood drive happening near you. Walk-ins are welcome at all locations. Blood donors must be 18 years old (or 16 or 17 with signed parental consent) and should prepare by eating a meal or healthy snack and properly hydrating. Donors must bring photo identification when they donate. For more information, go to lifesource.org or http://www.americasblood.org/whereto-donate.aspx.

Speaking Of Seniors

Her Husband Really Loved Her WOODROW WILCOX I want to tell you about the second fattest case file in my office. It is two inches thick with medical bills, my letters to correct medical bills, and other papers. The file is about a woman who was 88 years old and recently passed away. She lived in Valparaiso, Indiana A couple years ago, her husband phoned me to complain that her medical bills were not being paid properly. Her husband is a year older than she, but in better health. He wanted to know why her Medicare supplement insurance was not paying the bills. I asked him to send me whatever paperwork he had about the bills and I would check on it for him. The problem with this elderly man was that he wanted to read every letter about his wife’s care, but then he would misplace the letters. After his daughter got involved, the flow of paperwork to me made it easier for me to help because then I was receiving all the pieces of the puzzle to solve the billing problems. There were many billing problems. All of the billing problems were caused by one of two things: (1) Medicare failed to send vital information to the Medicare supplement insurance company so that the claims could be paid, or (2) the

hospital in Illinois failed to file the claim properly with Medicare and caused Medicare to deny the claim. The last letter that I sent for them to correct a billing error saved the couple $667.91. Without reviewing the file for every detail, I estimate that I saved the elderly couple over $5,000 by stopping attempts to collect wrongful medical bills. In working with the elderly man, I was impressed by his love for his wife. It was sweet that the elderly man thought and acted like a knight protecting his damsel. He wanted his wife to have the care that she needed and that she be treated with dignity and respect. At the same time, he did not want others to harm his marriage, his family, or his children by sending wrongful bills to them. He is a noble man. Her husband really loved her. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped seniors save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book Solving Medicare Problem$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Turn of Phrase: Hit and Miss

This term started out as “hit or miss,” meaning to do something carelessly or haphazardly. The first documented instance of the term was in about 1610. The term has drifted slightly in usage to suggest inconsistent results. “We sent an email to every club in the state, but results were hit-or-miss.”

genuinely engaged in the discussion. Two thoughts: First, no one ever makes us behave badly. The words and actions of others poke and prod at our hearts, surfacing what is already in them. This is an opportunity for growth, if we are willing to humble ourselves and learn from the experience. Second, the ability to ‘fess up when you mess up reveals a heart that is humble, ready to lower itself before God and others to make things right. It reveals a heart ready to be real about its own faults and flaws. It makes you approachable. It earns the trust and respect of others. I find it hard to admit when I’ve wronged someone else. Still, it helps me to know that Jesus sees my flaws and faults, yet forgives and accepts me. He frees me to say, “I’m sorry”.

RICHARD ZEKVELD I lost it. He was a newcomer to my Bible study. Five minutes in he began to challenge me, debate me, antagonize me. That, at least, was my take on it. I felt my anger, slowly building, burning inside of me, rising like lava, ready to erupt. It did. I hollered at him. Right in front of fifteen men. “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matthew 12:34b, The Bible). Or hollers, in my case. He didn’t make me do it. My heart did. My fear, pride and insecurity boiled over in angry response. The silence was deafening. All eyes were on me. It was a humbling moment and I was troubled by how I had treated him. “I’m sorry. I’m really sorry,” I began. “I had no right to treat you like that.” He said nothing, but his demeanor changed from that moment on. He seemed more interested,

Financial Advice Column

Are You Ready to Be an Entrepreneur? BOB KRYGSHELD July is Independent Retailer Month. As you know, local stores bring vitality, creativity and economic growth to their communities, so it’s worth celebrating those “mom and pop” shops. But they aren’t the only entrepreneurs in the country – about 10 percent of workers in the U.S. are self-employed, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. If you’re thinking of joining these ranks, you may want to prepare yourself financially. For one thing, you may need to pay more in taxes, depending on your income. Self-employed individuals typically have to pay twice the amount in Social Security and Medicare taxes because they have to cover the portion that employers normally pay. Also, unless you’re fortunate enough to have a spouse who can put you on their employer-based health insurance, you’ll need to find your own, at least until you’re eligible for Medicare. Furthermore, you will need to take charge of your own retirement savings. Fortunately, several retirement plans are available to the selfemployed. These plans typically offer tax-deferred growth potential and taxdeductible contributions. Here are a few options to consider: Owner-only 401(k) — This plan is available to self-employed individuals and business owners with no full-time employees other than themselves or a

spouse. For 2017, you can put in up to 25 percent of your annual income as an “employer” contribution, and you can defer up to $18,000 (or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older). The sum of your employer contribution and your salary deferrals cannot exceed $54,000, or $60,000 if you’re 50 or older. SEP IRA — If you have just a few employees or are self-employed with no employees, you may want to consider a SEP IRA. You’ll fund the plan with taxdeductible contributions, and you must cover all eligible employees. As an employer, you can contribute the lesser of 25% of your compensation (if you’re also an employee of your own business) or $54,000. SIMPLE IRA — A SIMPLE IRA, as its name suggests, is easy to set up and maintain, and it can be a good plan if your business has fewer than 10 employees. You’ll also need to prepare for unanticipated short-term expenses, such as a major car repair or a new furnace. While everyone should be ready to meet these needs, it’s especially important if you’re self-employed and have a variable income. So, work to build an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid, low-risk account. You may find selfemployment to be quite rewarding — but you’ll likely enjoy it even more if you make the right financial moves.

Peace, Be Still ANNA M. CAISON Over the weekend I heard an old song made popular by Rev. James Cleveland that brought peace to my spirit amid all the civil unrest our country is currently experiencing. The song, “Peace, Be Still” is taken from the passage of scripture (Mark 4:36-40) that tells of Jesus’ calming of the angry sea. The Chorus presents the thought that a storm-tossed sea could come in the form of demons, men or whatever! Regardless of the thing that threatens our peace, it becomes powerless when confronted with faith in God. “Master, the tempest is raging The billows are tossing high The sky is overshadowed with blackness No shelter or help is nigh Carest thou not that we perish? How canst thou lie asleep When each moment so madly is threatening A grave in the angry deep? The winds and the waves shall obey thy will Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Whether the wrath of the stormtossed sea Or demons, or men, or whatever it be No water can swallow the ship where lies The Master of ocean and earth and sky all shallissweetly free. Peace, peace, be still” This song embodies the emotional trauma we all feel when going through uncertain times. Every news report about an unarmed Black person killed by police for a minor traffic violation, or mistaken identity; or caught in gang crossfire------ we hold our breath in fear, while praying “Lord Jesus, not my child, not my loved one-----Lord, please, Lord, have mercy.” Even if the person is no one we know, it creates fear and anxiety that it could happen to us or to our loved one, or the loved one of someone we know. How can we have and maintain “inner” peace in times like these? A simple declaration of faith in the Lord. Peace. . .. Be still, my soul, and know that God is--. Each day another piece to the ongoing investigation of collusion between the Trump administration and Russia is revealed; obstruction of justice; using the office of POTUS for personal monetary gain------Peace, be still! McConnell and Ryan continue to push legislation that would eliminate healthcare for 23 million Americans to give massive tax cuts to the super wealthy----Peace, be still! Dysfunctional Congress------Peace, be still!

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We sold our house or we thought we did. Last day the buyer backed out and now says we were the cause. What do we do? Also we had a house that we where going to buy with profits from the sale of the first home, now this probably wont happen. Answer: Real estate contracts routinely have “contingencies” -- “I’ll buy your house if it passes a home inspection” or “I’ll buy the house if the owners will make certain repairs?” Were there requirements in the sale agreement you needed to complete by closing? Typically such information is known well before the date of settlement. Or, did the buyer fail to fulfill all obligations under the sale agreement? As to the second home, does your purchase agreement make it contingent on

the sale AND settlement of the first home? Two thoughts: First, you have one and possibly two disputes -- one with your buyer and one to emerge shortly with your seller. Please get an attorney immediately. Second, in the case of the first home, if the problem is work not completed ask if you can create an “escrow” (trust) fund to complete any required repairs or other work. Random Reads BRANDI SMITS All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater In the desert of Colorado resides the Soria family. On their ranch, Bicho Raro, miracles happen. The Saint of Bicho Raro conducts the miracles, a title passed down from person to person. Daniel is currently the Saint of Bicho Raro. People come from miles away, called pilgrims by the Sorias, to receive miracles. Although the outcomes are not always expected. The first miracle brings your darkness to the forefront. Perhaps you’re like Padre Jimenez who would gaze at women a bit too long. Now he is a hybrid with the body of a man and the head of wolf. The second miracle absolves you of your darkness and eliminates the issue that brought you to Bicho Raro. The Sorias do not talk to the pilgrims. It is dangerous for the family to interfere in the miracles. So the pilgrims live in several houses together and the family lives together. Daniel, Beatriz, and Joaquin stick together in most things. Joaquin has a dream of becoming a radio DJ, which would take him away from his family. Joaquin keeps his taboo dreams a secret, but still manages to make them a reality. With the help of Beatriz’s brains, Joaquin Gas lawnmower, mulcher, not self propelled, 21” cut, 3 1/2 HP, starts and looks and runs great, $85. 708-5390032 Cat 5e cable, 100 ft, NIB, $10. starts his own pirate radio station using the alias Diablo Diablo. Joaquin’s make-shift station is housed in a broken-down box truck. It reaches a few surrounding houses, but doesn’t have a very large reach. One night their broadcast was interrupted when a vehicle approached. Vehicles mean incoming pilgrims which means time for Saint Daniel to make a miracle. Little did the trio know that this car would be the catalyst to bring forth a great change to Bicho Raro. When Pete, who is neither a Sario or a pilgrim, arrives at the ranch, he inadvertently challenges the roles that everyone has comfortably fallen into over time. All the Crooked Saints is a fantastical novel that plays with magical realism. Each pilgrim is affected in a unique way whether it’s being followed everywhere by a rain cloud or unable to say anything other than repeating what was just said to you. The characters are well-crafted, each with their own idiosyncrasies. This is not a plot driven books, so just sit back and let the lyrical storytelling of Stiefvater take you on a trip. This title will be released in October 2017.

The Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity (ICLEO) is celebrating its 20th anniversary. The program is designed to encourage and support students of historically underrepresented backgrounds pursue a legal career. On July 20 at 5:30 pm EDT, more than 160 ICLEO alumni and supporters including lawyers, judges, and the current class will gather in the Indiana Supreme Court courtroom for a ceremony to celebrate the program. Indiana Chief Justice Loretta H. Rush will welcome guests, “Our profession is strengthened by judges and lawyers with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. The ICLEO program is helping to encourage diverse individuals to consider a legal career and I am proud to be a part of the celebration.” Since it was established in 1997 by Chief Justice Randall Shepard, Governor Frank O’Bannon, and the General Assembly, more than 500 individuals have participated as ICLEO scholars. The program includes an intensive summer study to help students prepare for law school, networking opportunities, and financial support. Scholars may be eligible for an annual $9,000 scholarship. Former Chief Justice Shepard says, “ICLEO has been a dramatic demonstration of the Indiana legal community’s commitment to equal opportunity in the profession.” Applications for the next ICLEO class will be available in the fall at courts.in.gov/cleo.

Backyard Que located at 18155 Roy St Suite #4 in Lansing had its grand opening on July 10th. With their beautiful county chic decor, first-time business owners Joey and Tanya Stanton cannot wait to share their links and homemade BBQ sauce with Lansing. The owners want you to know that they do this for fun. It’s a family run business and when you come in you will be treated like their own. They will be providing the community not only with a home cooked soul food, but also some laughs. They invite everyone to come and taste their reputation. Backyard Que is currently open 7 days a week, 11 AM to 11 PM Monday though Saturday and Sunday from Noon to 11 PM. They said they may adjust the hours once they get a feel for when their busier times are, but in the 2 weeks of their soft open, there have not been any slow times! For more info, you can visit them in person or visit their website at www. backyardq.com.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Is Your Price a Joke MIKE BUDER When working with sellers, arriving at a list price, which will meet market acceptance, is usually a bit of a chore. JOKE OF THE DAY: On his first listing appointment, the new Realtor did a great job of presenting comparable sales which indicated the seller’s house should be put on the market between $95,000 and $100,000. However, he didn’t actually mention that during the discussion. As they neared the end of the listing appointment, the agent asked the seller, “Ok, based on the comparable sales I’ve shown you, what price do you think we should put on your house?” The seller answered, “It should go on the market for $175,000 and I won’t sell it for a dime less.” The agent scratched his head and said, “Well, the comps are all low, but I think you should list it for $225,000 and expect to get somewhere in the range of $250,000.” The seller sat straight up in his chair and said, “Wow! Are you kidding?” The agent replied, “Yes, but you started it!” Being prepared to deal with a seller who can’t accept reality when setting the price is AllSafe Roofing. We do all roof repairs, wind damage, Ins. work. 7 day service. Se n i o r d i s c o u n t s. Sa ve money with AllSafe! Low on cash credit cards accepted. Call John at 708-740-0010. Allsaferc@gmail.com or dependablehomerepairs@ gmail.com.

probably one of the most difficult skills to develop in this business. You don’t want to disappoint them by telling them that their idea of value is totally out of line with the market, so some agents tend to compromise more than they should and take the listing at an unrealistic and unobtainable price. Sellers need to make sure they choose an agent who’s educated about the current real estate market, not the one who’s going to tell them everything that they want to hear, like a high asking price not supported by comparables. In today’s real estate market buyers are NOT going to overpay for a home and if they need financing, their lender is going to make sure of it by having an appraisal done.
