Outlook Academy Graduates Over 50 High School Students in July

What a graduation! On July 17, 2017, I went to the most joyous graduation I’ve ever attended. We entered the auditorium to the sounds of a very professional jazz band. The stage was decorated with large floral arrangements and white cloth covered the chairs—this was clearly a special event. The auditorium rapidly filled up with family and friends of the 108 graduates, 52 of whom were Outlook Academy students—52 students who got a second chance to graduate from high school. They are excited. Outlook Academy students graduate from the high school they would have if they’d graduated with their peers. They wear the same caps and gowns, stand up with summer school and other regular graduates, and receive a diploma from the high school. Outlook Academy students didn’t finish high school with their peers for various reasons, such as illness, pregnancy, homelessness, or other crises. They’ve had to work harder and longer to get that diploma, and now, here they are. The dignitaries begin to assemble on the stage, as the graduates file into the auditorium in their caps and gowns. Families clap and call to their grads—there are whoops of joy and shouts of encouragement. This is a happy crowd, many standing and recording with their phones. The Star Spangled Banner plays, and hands cover hearts. The MC thanks the parents and the staff of District 205. On the stage were the principals: Ebonie Williams of Thornridge High School, Tony Ratliff of Thornton Township High School, and Dennis D. Willis, Sr. of Thornwood High School. With them are District 205 School Board Members Ray Banks and Albert Butler, Area Instructional Leader Brett Fickes, District 205 Director of College & Careers John Arrington, and Thornridge High School Counselor Anthony Thomas, who would be delivering the graduate address. of Schools Dr. Leotis D. Swopes away. Anthony Thomas greeted the crowd, and they greeted him right back. He admitted that when he was asked to deliver the speech, he felt the need to say something “motivational.” Then he read something Zig Ziglar said: a motivational speech “only lasts one day…but so does bathing. You need it daily.” He went on, “You all have stories; of will power, determination, effort… it has been a struggle, especially for teens whose graduation was delayed by parenthood. So along with motivation, I choose to celebrate what you done.” Thomas may have been the designated speaker, but there were stirring words from many on the stage. John Arrington repeated a truism: “They say, ‘Those who graduated late never graduate.’ But you proved them wrong!” Thornridge Principal Ebonie Williams reminded them “You decided to to this. Always remember you have the power to make decisions.” Thornwood Principal Dennis D. Willis, Sr. said, “Doors have been opened for you. You did it! Now, walk through them.” Thornton Principal Tony Ratliff cited his own dissertation, in which he asserted that students fail because of boredom in a system that merely manages rather than educates students. “But you have proved ‘the system’ is a lie! You are a leader because you defied the odds. You’ve gone through the fire.” Outlook Academy Assistant Coordinator Steve Valant reminded the students they had not gotten here by themselves. “You are standing on broad shoulders… give a round of applause to your parents and grandparents.” The students came to their feet with thunderous applause. As the students crossed the stage, there were cheers, whistles, and clapping for every student. The band played each high school’s fight song. When the MC asked them to stand and pronounced them the Class of 2017, a roar rose from the whole room. One parent’s yell said it all: “You made it baby!”

Towle Holding Auditions for Youth Theater Ensemble The next production of the Towle Youth Theater Ensemble (TYTE) will be Heathers The Musical (High School Edition) directed by Managing Director Jeff Casey, Musical Direction by Elizabeth Tuazon and Choreography by Colin Funk. Auditions are open to students ages 14-18. Heathers The Musical is a hilarious, heartfelt and homicidal new show based on the greatest teen comedy of all time. Initial vocal auditions are by appointment (call 219-9378780) and will be held on Saturday, August 5 starting at 10:00am and Sunday, August 6 starting at 1:00pm at the Towle Theater; 5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond, IN. Please prepare 32 bars from a Contemporary Broadway Show or 80’s Pop Song. Have sheet music with your measures marked in a binder for the accompanist. The song should be memorized and performed, not just sung—they are looking for singers who can act too, not just good voices. Those auditioning will be doing so for membership/ participation in Towle Youth Theater Ensemble (TYTE), not necessarily a role in Heathers The Musical. From all of the talent selected to be in TYTE they will cast the show, assign technical, administrative, marketing duties, etc. as appropriate. So if you don’t consider yourself an actor—set up an appointment time for an interview anyway! The Towle believes their Ensemble structure will bring more value to the participants as well as their creative process and final production quality. The overall goal is to build a team of theatre artists and leaders, not just “stars.” Students from all over NW Indiana and the greater Chicago area are strongly encouraged to audition. Volunteer Tutors Needed for South Suburban College Adult Volunteer Literacy Program South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adults in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes the development of phonetic reading skills combined with communication skills. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program. New tutor Fall SEMESTER training sessions will take place at the Main Campus in South Holland on August 15 & 17 from 5pm until 7pm and August 22 & 24 from 5pm until 7pm. Come join our Literacy Program and help us start the fall off right! The tutor training is an 18-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. We also offer online training as well. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods. Adults who are unable to read have a much more difficult time with many daily activities that others may take for granted, along with a clear disadvantage in today’s competitive job market. SSC’s Office of Adult Education administers the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program in addition to High School Equivalency (HSE), English as a Second Language (ESL), and Adult Basic Education (ABE). Tutors will receive free professional development services throughout this program. Successful tutors are also eligible for letters of support or recommendation for jobs, scholarships, educational opportunities, and more. These opportunities are made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy. Some are better suited for short-term goals, while others can help you build resources for objectives far in the future. As an investor, then, one of your biggest challenges will be to match your short- and long-term goals with the appropriate investment vehicles. For starters, identify your short- and long-term goals. Your shorter-term goals will change throughout your life. When you are starting out in your career, for example, you might aspire to purchase a home in the next three to five years. Later on, though, your biggest short-term objective might be to save enough money for a tour of Europe. As for long-term goals, your biggest one likely will be to enjoy a comfortable retirement. But you may well have other long-term plans, too, such as sending your kids to college in 10 or 15 years. After you have a clear sense of your short- and long-term goals, you can choose the right investments to help you meet them. When you’re saving for a down payment on a home or for an expensive vacation, you want to make sure that a certain amount of money will be available to you at a certain time. Consequently, you may want to avoid stocks or stock-based vehicles, which will constantly fluctuate in price, because you don’t want the value of your investment to be down at the moment you need the money. I wonder how old the Preacher was when he wrote Ecclesiastes? As my journey brings me closer to the threshold of eternity, I find myself, like the Preacher, reflecting a lot about life, its lessons, and the epithet I leave behind. Since the 2016 election, numerous articles have been written that mocked the folly of Christians who voted for the current president. I too ponder the reasoning behind this. Was it because the president connected with a dark place in our heart that we’ve held back from the Lord? Or, is it because many Christians lack a working understanding of the Bible when it comes to living “in the world but not of the world”? For example, in Matthew 7:15-18, Jesus tells His listeners that to recognize a false prophet from a real prophet you must check their lifestyle (fruit). A corrupt tree can’t bring forth good fruit and a good tree can’t bring forth bad fruit. To one who lacks a working understanding of the Bible, this verse is simply speaking to church matters. But to the person who understand the principle meaning of these verses applies it also to the world around him, which includes selecting men and women to lead our country. The actions of our 45th president does not surprise or shock me. He

Four Bishop Noll classmates ended their senior year doing what they did throughout their four years of high school – helping others. For their final theology project, Jailynn Thomas, of Gary; Tiffany Daniel, of Gary; Rachel Tredway, of Hammond; and Brittany Anderson, of East Chicago; made and delivered gift bags to cancer patients of Community Hospital in Munster. Tredway, who will start Purdue University Northwest this fall, said, “We were given an assignment to create our own service project. We chose that we wanted to help those who were sick.” She most enjoyed seeing the impact they made on the patients. “They realized that someone was there for them and that people were thinking about them. Some of the patients were very sick and I know us being there at least put a smile on their face,” she said. This wasn’t the first time she took part in a service project and said they are an important part of a Bishop Noll education. “They have impacted my life severely. It is so rewarding knowing the smallest act of kindness can make a person’s day … this was one of the best things that I have done throughout my high school years and it was a great way to end my senior year. I would not trade what we did, for anything.” Thomas, who will attend Barton College in Wilson, N.C., this fall, said they made 30 gift bags that included a water bottle, candy, lotion, a toothbrush, toothpaste, a word search book, cheese and crackers, pretzels, hand sanitizer, a small notebook, socks, juice boxes, a pen, a granola bar, tissue, and lip balm. Each bag had a gift tag around the handle that included the name of one or two donors. The patients were overjoyed to receive the surprise gifts, she said, and some shared stories with the teens. “One of the elderly gentlemen there not only expressed his heartfelt appreciation for our generosity, but he also stated that he didn’t often have visitors so seeing new faces made his day.

His statement ‘I seriously can’t thank you girls enough’ nearly brought us to tears. His reaction as well as the joy of the other patients really capture the essence of why this project and service projects in general are important.” Thomas said the experience taught her and her classmates that sharing a small token of love and kindness was needed more than they thought. “This firsthand encounter with those who were sick, elderly, and some who couldn’t even walk was a big reminder to me that not only do I need to continue to give back, but I also need to make giving back a part of my daily lifestyle.” She said the experience was humbling and rewarding. Participating in service projects at Bishop Noll impacted her academic experience. “Service learning at Noll led me on the path to becoming a well-rounded individual and also showed me the importance of continuously learning and growing both inside and outside the classroom.” Daniel, who will attend Indiana UniversityBloomington this fall, said her group raised money for the gift bags through donations from friends, family and strangers. “I enjoyed making the gift bags with my friends and also being able to deliver, see, and hear the patients’ faces and stories after giving them the bags … I learned that any small gesture of kindness can brighten up someone’s day and also that same gesture can and will leave a huge impression on their lives forever.” She said service projects like this one were an important part of her Noll education. “Having to do service projects gave me an eye opening experience and showed me how blessed I was as an individual. If it was not for projects like this one, I do not think I would have been aware of the different situations and problems people have to deal with on a daily basis. This was a great opportunity to learn and grow with my community and Christian faith.”

Subjective Bias MIKE BUDER If the comparable sales are so crummy, why did they sell and you didn’t? I just got word that my clients offer on a Lansing home was accepted. What is unusual about this deal is that the seller’s actually interviewed me before listing with another agent. I respect the agent, so I was happy for them. Ironically the home sold for the price I predicted back in February, which is probably the reason I didn’t get hired. During the negotiation, my colleague and I kept cooler heads and affected a meeting of the minds. This was a far departure from the mini dramas I have seen playing out lately where sellers and agents let their emotions get the better of them and inject unneeded drama into a process that calls for calm and sanity. One tactic I have seen is the petty nonsense some sellers and their agents pull when comparable sales are cited as justification for the price offered. They will say: “oh that dump, our home is much better” or “that home is not comparable to ours, how insulting”. While I respect some honest bias toward one’s own home, it is ludicrous to think that the other homes that have been selected by buyers while you remain unsold are all bad places. If anything, the buyers in our area are scooping the cream off the top. Buyers today are more savvy and careful than they have ever been. If a house sells ahead of another, it is usually for a good reason. In short, it is foolish to discount the comparable sales because of subjective bias, especially in this environment. Most homes selling now are priced right and in good to great shape for the money. You can take that to the bank. The sooner some sellers and their agents come out of the fog that their house is not the only habitable house in the neighborhood the sooner they will sell. It means suspending bias, but it pays off far better in the end than destructive house vanity. Real estate agents who grasp this are doing their job right. ARLO KALLEMEYN Here is a summertime recipe that will give you delicious BBQ ribs without standing over the grill all day. Ingredients: 2 slabs of baby back ribs from Walts Moo & Oink BBQ Sprinkle Apple Cider Vinegar Brown Sugar Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce Trim fat and remove membrane from ribs—use a butter knife and paper towel. Rinse ribs. Cut into 5 portions (yes, 2 people will get a bigger portion—who’s your favorite?). Liberally season both sides with BBQ Sprinkle. Place ribs in Ziplock bag and refrigerate 2-6 hours. Heat 1 cup apple cider with 1 cup water and ¼ cup brown sugar. Use large baking sheet with 1” sides. Place ribs on sheet and pour cider into bottom. Cover with aluminum foil to keep steam in. Cook in oven at 225 degrees for 3 hours. Remove from oven and refrigerate overnight. Broil for 10-15 minutes on your gas grill—watch carefully —don’t burn em! Slather ribs with BBQ sauce. A new organization led by Businessman Bob Wisz of Doreen’s Gourmet Pizza in Calumet City, and called the Hegewisch Business Association, decided to put the fest back together again, albeit on a smaller scale. The fest is scheduled for Saturday September 30th, 2017, a 1 day event set for the corner of the old Cousin’s Restaurant, 133rd and Baltimore in the heart of ‘downtown’ Hegewisch. There will be food vendors, games, raffles and some surprises as the fest is a work in progress right now. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. ***

This class is for aging drivers who may need a little added instruction to keep their skills up to speed (no pun intended). Thornton Township has passed Resolution 17-R-007 a Resolution Adopting the Prevailing Wage Rates for Laborers, Workmen and Mechanics Employed on Public Works of Thornton Township, County of Cook, State of Illinois.
