_______________________________ Highland High School student Lily Jean Wall has won the Congressional Art Competition for her piece entitled “Nikki.” Wall’s artwork will be on display in the U.S. Capitol building until June 2018, along with artwork selected from each Congressional District in the United States. Lily is entering her senior year at Highland High School and her artwork is a drawing of her art teacher, Mr. Nikki Kutansky, who has been one of her biggest influences growing up. Runner-up is LaShawn Wise for his piece entitled “Covered by Country.” Wise recently graduated from the Emerson Wirt Visual and Performing Arts Academy and his artwork is a digital

photograph of his friend who will soon be serving in the U.S. military. Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. Students submit entries to their representative’s office, and panels of district artists select the winning entries. Winners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC. The winning works are displayed for one

year at the U.S. Capitol.US Congressman Pete Visclosky, of the First District of Indiana, stated, “I congratulate Lily and LaShawn, and I thank all of the Northwest Indiana students who utilized their time and talents to participate in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. Humane Society Calumet area (HSCA) will host its 25th annual Paws in the Park pn September 9th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Community Park in Munster. This one mile walk and vendor fair helps raise much needed funds and awareness for the homeless animals of HSCA and the injured and orphaned wildlife at Moraine Ridge Wildlife Center (MRW). Free and open to the public, the 25th annual Paws in the Park will feature family and pet friendly entertainment and a vendor fair held Activities includes a bounce house, kid friendly contests, and a photo booth for you and your pet! This year Paws in the Park will be partnering with local restaurants Tomato Bar, Tavern on Main, and Angel Hair Cafe who will be selling delicious vegetarian food options to attendees. The walk kick-off will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. Participants can check in for the walk from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and day of walking registration will also be available. Walkers can register individually or as a team to raise funds for the animals of HSCA and MRW. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Who Wants a Pop? ARLO KALLEMEYN Up north here pop is what we call that refreshing drink in a 12 oz can. Down south it’s soda. Whatever you call it, get ready for a surprise. A new soda tax in Cook County started last week. If you listen to the Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and her commissioners it’s not about the revenue, but the new tax is needed because people are overweight and unhealthy. I’ve always been told that talking about a person’s weight is not for polite company, but Cook County has long ceased to worry about being polite. It’s a bit confusing since President Toni told us that it’s not about the money, but if the tax didn’t pass then doctors and lawyers would be laid off. That sounds like a revenue problem to me. However, a certain alliance group disagrees with me. Health focused groups such as the Illinois Alliance to Prevent Obesity, hailed the tax, hoping the extra cost will discourage sugar consumption. “We’re gratified that Cook County is at the forefront of a national movement to create a healthier population,” the group said in a news release. So, it’s all about being healthy right? I would like to take this opportunity to thank Toni Preckwinkle and the 17 Cook County Commissions for their concern for my health. I’m quite touched that even though you don’t return my calls or emails with suggestions about how to make Cook County more business- and jobs-friendly, you are still worried about my personal health. (Personally I think that making Cook County more business friendly would be more beneficial to

your constituents, but that’s just my opinion.) I am worried also—and my concern is for you, the President of Cook County and the 17 Cook County Commissioners. What about your health and overweight status? You must have a large amount of stress in your life what with all those new taxes to consider raising. When I get stressed the refrigerator is one of my best friends. In other words when I get stressed I get a cold drink and bag of chips. It’s the perfect antidote to worrying about new government regulations for a small business owner. According to the Internet I am in the overweight category by several pounds. What to do? I am hereby inviting you to my Biggest Loser campaign. Let’s lose this weight together my friends on the Cook County Board. Let’s all give up pop and chips together, and support each other in our quest for better health. We all may be surprised at how much weight we can lose. I will even donate free weigh-ins on my company’s warehouse scale. Perhaps you could all come together and do a Cook County team weigh-in—if you are too shy to get on the scale by yourself. Let’s make a resolution to all become healthier together. We could take it a step farther and resolve to not buy pop or sugary drinks in Cook County. AT&T Volunteers Give Back to Community Making cards and care packages of toiletries to send to children and adults facing cancer, helping pack meals for the hungry, and cleaning up an area beach are just a few of the projects by more than 3 dozen AT&T employee volunteers on August 3rd and 4th. _______________________________ Christ Church in Lansing held their second annual Back To School Giveaway on Saturday August 5, and it was a great success. With the help of Walgreens, Home Depot, Target, Bozo’s Hotdogs, and other businesses, as well as many family and friends, this little church of modest means was able to impact 70 students of all ages who preregistered for the event, as well as many others who were walk-ins. Preregistration is a unique feature of the Christ Church event, and enables them to tailor the school supplies to the needs of the child, and the school and grade they will attend. A first grader and a 10th grader need very different supplies. Registration lasts a month leading up to the event, and then the supplies are sorted and packed into new reusable shopping bags provided by Walgreens and Home Depot, with the name and grade of the child pinned to the bag. Families arrive and stop at a desk where they give the child’s name; the specially packed bag is given to the child, and then the child chooses a brand new backpack from many colorful options available. well, a table is spread with miscellaneous supplies that students can choose from to add to their bags, including markers, pencils, pens, ring binders, subject notebooks, and more. Expectant mothers and their families facing high-risk or complicated pregnancies often need specialized care to guide them through their own unique challenges. A partnership between Community Hospital and The University of Chicago Medicine is bringing specialized Maternal-Fetal Medicine much closer to home making it more convenient for families. Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians partner with multiple caregivers to consult and co-manage complicated situations – chronic conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes or kidney disease – both before, during and after pregnancy. With this new collaboration, subspecialists from The University of Chicago Medicine supplement care already provided by Community Healthcare System’s team of obstetrician/ gynecologists. These maternal-fetal specialists work in tandem with the expectant mother’s primary care physician to provide counseling, screening and fetal diagnostic testing. “Offering this level of expertise in managing high-risk situations means we have the knowledge and experience to guide women through every situation during this important time in her life,” said Carla Meyer, director of Patient Care Services. “Our team of maternal-fetal specialists, OB/GYNs, primary care physicians, nurses and other staff provide a woman and her family the critical support she needs to deliver a healthy baby.” Previously, women with high-risk pregnancies living in Northwest Indiana would be referred to a hospital in a university setting to receive a more complex level of care. August is Water Quality Month. What’s on tap? A reminder to celebrate Indiana’s bounty of rivers, lakes and streams. They support a billion-dollar recreational economy and are central to our health, industry and agriculture. The picture isn’t all clean and refreshing, though. Highland Native Keeps Navyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Most Advanced Aircraft Flying A 2002 Highland High School graduate and Highland, Indiana native is serving with a U.S. Navy electronic attack squadron that flies one of the Navyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest and most technologicallyadvanced aircraft, the EA-18G Growler. Petty Officer 1st Class Thomas Heintzman is an aviation electronics technician with the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Black Ravensâ&#x20AC;? of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 135, one of 14 Navy electronic attack squadrons based in Whidbey Island, Washington. As an aviation electronics technician, Heintzman is responsible for fixing the aircraft avionics systems, including communications, radar, and electronic countermeasures. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I enjoy fixing aircraft,â&#x20AC;? said Heintzman. Taking off from and landing on Navy aircraft carriers, as well as supporting expeditionary land-based operations around the world, Growler crewmembers engage in electronic warfare, one of the most important components of modern air combat, according to Navy

Bishop Noll Alum Named Indiana Eagle Scout of the Year Daniel Cuevas, a 2017 graduate of Bishop Noll Institute, continues to soar to new heights. This week, the American Legion named Cuevas, a Hammond resident, as its Indiana Eagle Scout of the Year. Cuevas first won the Legion’s scholarship contest at the regional level and found out this week that he also won at the state level. His application will next be entered at the national level. “The scholarship application required me to write about my academic accomplishments, extracurriculars, community involvement, leadership ability, and, most importantly, my Eagle Scout service project,” said Cuevas, who will attend

Wabash College this fall. For the service project, which asks Scouts to demonstrate leadership of others while completing a project to benefit his community, Cuevas raised funds to purchase and assemble athletic benches for Bishop Noll’s outdoor field. After completing his project and fulfilling all criteria, Cuevas officially became an Eagle Scout Jan. 8, 2017. “After completing my Eagle Project and earning Eagle Scout of the Year in Indiana, I’m proud of the fact that I actually did it and proved people wrong. I chose a huge project with a small time frame. I had to raise more than $3,000 within six months. Many people doubted me and pushed me to choose a smaller project, but I was determined to take this challenge and do this for school. Not only did I complete the project, but I’m also receiving additional scholarships for my work, which helps so much.

“Another amazing thing that came out of this project was the love from the community. Many friends and strangers came up to me personally, thanking me and telling me that I was a real role model. State’s Attorney Issues Consumer Alert Regarding Home Repair and Remodeling Contractors Summertime is when many homeowners decide to repair or renovate their homes. The State’s Attorney cautions property owners to be aware that a repair project could turn into a nightmare if you fall prey to a home repair scam. Con artists may never start or complete the work. Materials and workmanship may be grossly inferior to what was promised. Undisclosed charges for permits, other fees and cost overruns may significantly increase the total cost of the repairs. The selection of a qualified and reliable home repair contractor can be a frustrating task, and consumer complaints about contractors are among the most common reviewed by the Consumer Fraud Unit of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. “Most home repair and remodeling companies are operated by honest people, but there are some unscrupulous people who prey on trusting consumers. There are warning signs that homeowners can look for and steps that they can take to avoid becoming the victim of home repair fraud,” said Cook County State’s Attorney Kimberly Foxx. The Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, Consumer Fraud Unit, recommends the following precautions to avoid disappointment in your dealings with home repair and remodeling contractors. RECOMMENDATIONS AND REFERENCES: Seek recommendations from your insurance company or through referrals from satisfied customers. Ask each contractor for references and a written estimate. Contact the references and ask them if they were satisfied with the home repairs provided by the contractor. Contractors, unless they maintain a net worth of $1,000,000, must obtain and maintain public liability and property damage insurance in the amount of $100,000 per person and $300,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and $50,000 per occurrence for property damage. Even if the contractor has provided you with proof of full insurance coverage, as an additional safeguard, confirm that your homeowner’s policy covers accidents to persons working on your property. SSC Foundation Elects New President, Readies for Tom Dreesen Fundraiser and Scholarship Drive The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) recently held its annual meeting at South Suburban College (SSC) in South Holland to review and close fiscal year (FY) 2017 and to elect new membership and officers for FY-18. Two new representatives will be joining the SSCF Board of Directors: Helen Y. Gant-Farley, of Advocate Medical Group, and John A. Velez of BMO Harris Bank. Ms. Gant-Farley, is the Regional Director of Operations for the Advocate Medical Group, a position she has held since June 2015 when she moved to Illinois from Pennsylvania. With over 10 years of financial experience, Mr. Velez is the Bank Manager for BMO Harris Bank at the South Holland office. He joined BMO Harris

Bank in 2010. Additionally, the Foundation elected a new slate of officers including new President Tim Woloszyn, MB Financial Bank; Vice-President Susan Cox, First Midwest Bank; Treasurer John Kasperek, Jr., John Kasperek Co., Inc.; and Executive Committee members Patrick Rush, SSCF Executive Director; Robin James, Providence Bank; Cindy Doorn-Nylen, Docter’s Interior Landscaping; and Don Manning, SSC President. “Thank you to the Board of Directors for your vote of confidence and your continued support of this important organization,” said Woloszyn. “I would also like to personally thank Cindy Doorn-Nylen for her incredible leadership during the past two years. I look forward to our continued growth to provide more opportunities to students at SSC.” The SSCF also reviewed fundraising successes and scholarships awarded of the past year. Its two major fundraisers–the fall Scholarship Donor Drive and the spring Showcase Gala helped the Foundation to award over $100,000 in scholarships, with an additional $12,000 in special assistance

directed to SSC students through the Carol Manning Student Assistance Fund and Rocky Clark Memorial Fund (for students with challenges). “Thanks to our board of directors and countless supporters, the South Suburban College Foundation had a successful year fulfilling its mission to support student success,” said Pat Rush, Executive Director. “The coming year will be especially critical to SSC and we will aggressively pursue additional support beginning with our Tom Dreesen performance on September 23rd, our ongoing $90-for-90 capital campaign, and our fall scholarship drive.” The SSC Foundation is a philanthropic, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors composed of 22 of the south suburban area’s business, civic and community leaders. Bad Practice MIKE BUDER “Buying a listing”…who should the seller choose? Mr. and Mrs. Gullible have been talking about putting their home on the market for about a year now. Well, they have finally made up their minds. They have decided that “now is the time”. They have a fairly good idea of what they think their home is worth. After doing their own homework online with some of the automated pricing websites, the sellers, Mr. and Mrs. Gullible being somewhat sensible, schedule appointments with 3 local real estate agents who’ve been hanging stuff on their front doorknob for years. Each agent comes prepared with a “competitive market analysis”. Each of the 3 agents recommends a specific sale price. Amazingly, the first 2 agents have come up with prices that are lower than the sellers expected. Although they back up their recommendations with recent sales data of comparable homes, the sellers remain convinced their home is worth more. The sellers find the third agents pricing to be much more in line with the listing price they hoped for. Suddenly, they are two very happy and excited home sellers, already counting their money. Martello, will take place at the Greenstone Church in Pullman on Friday, September 22. How Can You Leave the Legacy You Desire? BOB KRYGSHELD You may not see it in the greeting card section of your local drugstore, but August is “What Will Be Your Legacy Month.” So it’s a good time to think about the type of legacy you’d like to leave. In the broadest sense, your legacy is how you will be remembered. On a practical level, establishing your legacy means providing your family and the charitable organizations you support with the resources you’d like them to have. Let’s take a quick look at steps to take: Create your plans. You will want to work with your legal professional, and possibly your tax and financial professionals, too, to draft the plans needed to fulfill your legacy wishes. These plans may include drafting a will, living trust, health care directive, power of attorney and other documents. Communicate your wishes. It’s important to communicate your legacyrelated wishes to your family members as early as possible. By doing so, you can hopefully avoid unpleasant surprises and hurt feelings when it’s time for your estate to be settled – and you’ll also let people know what tasks, if any, they need to perform. For example, if you’re choosing a family member to be the executor of your estate or power of attorney, they should be prepared. Update your documents. During your life, you may

well experience any number of changes – new marriage, new children, opening a family business, and so on. You need to make sure your legal documents and financial accounts reflect these changes. For example, if you’ve remarried, you may want to change the beneficiary designations on your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts – if left untouched, these designations may even supersede the instructions left in your will. And the directions in life chosen by your grown children may also dictate changes in your will or living trust. In any case, it’s a good idea to review all your legacy-related documents periodically, and update them as needed. In addition to taking the above steps, you also need to protect the financial resources that go into your legacy. So, when you retire and begin taking funds from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts, make sure your withdrawal rate is sufficient for your living expenses, but not so high that it eventually jeopardizes the amounts you planned. A financial professional can help you determine the withdrawal rate appropriate for your situation. With careful planning, and by making the right moves, you can create the type of legacy you desire— one that can benefit your loved ones far into the future.

Amazingly, it was a well behaved crowd, with lots of seniors and children in the mix, walkers, wheelchairs, strollers all trying to navigate the festivities. As a former neighbor of Cathy’s when we shared a street, Clyde Avenue, in the unincorporated South Holland, I remember how she took in injured forest creatures, nursed them back to health and set them free. She found joy in feeding wild birds. Each guest at the remembrance for Cathy received a small bag of birdseed which we were to spread in her memory.
