Local school board presidents and district members attended Thornton High School’s ribbon-cutting event in Harvey, for the opening of the upgraded stadium. By Patricia Muhammad Over the Labor Day weekend, Thornton High School Wildcats Football team and local school board districts 147 and 205 had much to celebrate, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a colossal win against Kenwood Academy, defeating Kenwood with a 54-6 victory. “Our stadium was in much need of a facelift...I want to thank the school board for their leadership and for making the decision that they have made. The beautification of this stadium will last for a lifetime,” said Tony Ratliff, principal for Thornton High School. Area weather was perfect for the Sept. 2nd ribbon-cutting event and football game. The Thornton High School Administration, band, school district presidents, coaches, and others gathered on the new track to celebrate

the opening of the bright, shiny stadium. According to Principal Ratliff, the rebuilding efforts for the stadium started well over a year ago, back in May 2016. Ratliff also stated that the stadium serves as a beacon of hope for more rebuilding efforts in and around the Harvey community. Born and raised in Harvey, Mr. Ratliff said, “Harvey is a beautiful place. I grew up in Harvey. If there were any change to Harvey, people did it. People built up Harvey; people changed it, and people are going to bring it back. Rebuilding the stadium is the network and apparatus to bring it back.” Charwana Morgan, a life-long Harvey resident and Parent Coordinator for Thornton High School, agrees: “I believe that the new stadium beautifies the community. It will cause more parents to come out and support their children; because as we know, parental

involvement makes a difference in every child’s success.” Local school board presidents showed up to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony, including several former teachers, who expressed feelings of elation because of their association with school districts 147 and 205. “I was a teacher in School District 147 for 33 years,” said Mrs. Graham, who was one of the former teachers. “I am so proud and so happy to see what is happening here today.” Thornton High School, built in 1898, is the home of several NFL players including Barry Gardner, (Linebacker for the Philadelphia Eagles); Napolean Harris (Linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings); and Antwaan Randle El (Wide Receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Red Skins); among other players.

On Labor Day, September 4, the City of Calumet City and the Calumet Memorial Park District hosted the annual Liberty Parade. This year, the parade commemorated the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the First World War. Among the many marchers in last week’s parade were the Calumet City Fire Department’s 1914 American LeFrance, the first fire engine the city owned over a century ago (top photo); a member of the Harvey Blue Angels dance team (second photo); the Black Cowboys of the Silver Stallion Ranch (third photo); and the lovely Sonia Guadalupe Hernandez, Miss Latina World Illinois 2017 (bottom photo). As well, there were marching bands, drill teams, floats, dancers, veterans groups, and of course plenty of candy—so a good time was had by all.

Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson joined fellow members of the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) in reminding citizens that September 2017 is National Voter Registration Month. Secretary Lawson is working with Indiana’s federal, state and local leaders to make eligible voters aware of registration deadlines, encourage increased voter participation and engagement, and promote state resources that are available to help with the registration process. Said Secretary Lawson, “Voting is a fundamental right and allows every citizen to have a voice in government. If you are unregistered, I encourage you to visit our website and submit an application right away. Those five minutes might be the most important you spend today.” To register to vote in Indiana, visit www.IndianaVoters.com. There, Indiana residents can register, verify their registration, check their polling place, and look up contact information for local election offices.

Governor Says, Raise Your Sleeve, Hoosiers As the already low national blood supply takes a hit from Hurricane Harvey, Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch urges fellow Hoosiers to give blood: Hurricane Irma is expected to strike Florida on Saturday. Like Hurricane Harvey in Texas, the impact will be widespread – affecting the already low blood supply. I’m encouraging all Hoosiers to donate blood with Indiana Blood Center this weekend. Donate at one of Indiana Blood Center’s many locations, or sign up to donate at a drive in your community. I am very proud that state employees will host a drive at the Indiana Government Center on September 13 to support this effort. In total, Hoosiers provided

600 units from Indiana Blood Center to patients in Texas. With the impending impact of Hurricane Irma, our blood supply will remain strained. As your Lt. Governor and chairman of the Indiana Counter Terrorism and Security Council, I take my responsibility of protecting Hoosiers seriously. Safeguarding our blood supply is critical, particularly during this national emergency. As we know, the greatest strength of Indiana are her people. Hoosiers step up to help one another, and I know together we will continue to help save lives right here in Indiana and across our great country. Thankfully, Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch

Speaking Of Seniors

I AM THAT GUY! WOODROW WILCOX In early August, I helped a client with a Medicare related medical bill problem. The client is from Munster, Indiana. After I finished meeting and working with her to fix her problem, she told me how she heard of me. “I told a friend that I was having problems with Medicare and medical bills. The friend asked me where I bought my Medicare supplement policy. I told her that I bought it through Senior Care Insurance Services. My friend reminded me that the firm is run by Fred Ulayyet and told me that Fred has a guy who helps the clients when they have medical bill problems. I am motivated by commission and I won’t deny it! I get calls several times a month to evaluate expired listings that other brokers failed to sell. Besides examining the price and condition of the home, I will always examine the commission structure of the previous listing agent. Very often the broker compensation was not adequate enough to motivate agents to bring their buyers through the front door. Realtors are not any different than other professionals. Why do consumers go to work everyday? Why do they deliver mail, operate companies, drill for oil and teach little children how to count? They probably chose their profession because they liked it. Perhaps they developed a passion for the industry while in school. But I would venture to say not many of them would continue to show up to the office everyday if they weren’t getting paid. In fact, they work harder, continue their education and usually do everything in their power to climb the pay scale. Realtors today like to help buyers find new homes and sellers to get their properties sold. However, they are motivated by the amount of commission that is attached to a listing and by the number of transactions they can close! There’s a reason why 75% of all new real estate agents fail. . .it’s because this business is very difficult today and very expensive to play in. So every penny counts. Personally, if I were a seller today, I would rather hire an aggressive (money motivated) agent versus anyone else. They’ll work that much harder to sell my house. I would know that at the end of the day, I—and only I—will make the decision as to how much I will sell my house for, not the agent! Financial Advice Column

Protect Three Key Goals With Life Insurance BOB KRYGSHELD September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And “awareness” is an appropriate designation, because many people remain unaware of the many ways in which life insurance can help families meet their key financial goals. Here are three of the biggest of these objectives, as seen through the eyes of a hypothetical couple, Jim and Joan: Pay off mortgage – If one of them dies well before their mortgage is paid off, could the other one afford to keep making payments to remain in the house with the children? It might be quite difficult – the death of either Jim or Joan would likely put an enormous financial strain on the surviving spouse. But with the proceeds of a life insurance policy, the survivor could continue making the house payments. Educate children – Jim and Joan, would like to see both of their young children eventually go to college. Of course, college is expensive: For the 2016-17 school year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was about $20,000 for instate students at public universities and more than $45,000 for private schools. And these costs are likely to continue climbing. Jim and Joan have started putting money away in a tax-advantaged 529 savings plan, but if something were to happen to one of them, the surviving spouse might be hard pressed to continue these savings. But the proceeds of a life insurance death benefit could be enough to fund some, or perhaps all, of the college costs.

Provide for family’s future – Jim and Joan’s future income is their most valuable asset as they continue working. However, an unexpected death could leave this dualincome family with a single income that may not cover all financial obligations and retirement contributions – or even preserve the family’s current lifestyle. Life insurance could help cover these needs. Plus, the death benefit to the family may be tax-free. Clearly, a life insurance policy could allow Jim or Joan to continue on with life, despite, of course, the devastating emotional loss of a partner. But how much insurance should they own? You might read that most people need a death benefit of seven to 10 times their annual income. This might be a good starting point, but everyone’s situation is different. You should consider all factors – including liabilities, income replacement, final expenses and education – to get an accurate picture of how much insurance is appropriate. A financial professional can help you with this calculation. Take some to time this month to review your insurance situation. It’s a good idea to review your coverage to make certain the amount and type of insurance is still appropriate for your needs. As we’ve seen, the right coverage can make a huge difference in the lives of your loved ones. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

Turn of Phrase: A“skeleton in the closet” means something scandalous to be hidden at all costs. Until the 1830s it was illegal to dissect human bodies, so medical schools got their corpses from grave-robbers. These had to be hidden in case of police raids. The phrase was used for the first time in Vanity Fair, in 1845.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m selling my lake property. It’s listed with a real estate agent. Recently my neighbors approached me with a real estate agent. They voiced interest but pulled me aside suggesting a private sale. I don’t know why they want to have a private sale except that they think I will sell for less because I wouldn’t have to pay the agent’s fee. Do they have me over a barrel or not? Answer: When you listed your property for sale you engaged a broker on the basis that each of you sought a mutual benefit: You wanted to sell the property and the broker wanted to earn a commission for his services. Does the term “private sale” mean a sale without paying your broker or the broker who accompanied your neighbors? If correct, does this seem fair to anyone? Would it be okay if you did work and then were not paid? This is a good time to take a look at your

listing agreement. It has a termination date and it likely has something else: a protection period. A “protection period” is a clause which says that if a property is shown to a prospect during the listing period but the purchase is made after the listing ends then the broker is still entitled to a commission. There is no dilemma in this matter. Your broker introduced people to the property, is prepared to act on your behalf to close a sale and should be paid as you agreed. envision myself splashing in the crystal river that John saw and wrote about. I then act as if I’m there! I begin jumping and splashing in the crystal river and worshiping God until the issues that brought me there are no longer weighing me down. With a refreshed spirit and a renewed mind, I can work through whatever difficulties I’m facing with faith, hope and victory. Some, reading this article, are probably laughing as did a few parishioners when I demonstrated this form of meditation from the pulpit. But I challenge you, the next time you find yourself backed into a wall of despair, close your eyes and with child-like faith imagine yourself splashing in the crystal river. Take a leaf from the tree of life and rub it over your face and begin worshiping the Lord. In His presence you will find the peace and tenacity to move forward in this life with victory.

GOD WITH US

The scene outside my bedroom window reminds me of the glorious future God has for those who love Him. There are two trees parallel to each other. Between the two trees is a paved walkway that leads outside the apartment complex I live in. Each day that I go to my mailbox I take the path that runs between the two trees (tenant mailboxes are outside of each building). And with each return trip from the mailbox as I walk between the two trees I see a glimpse of what the Apostle John wrote about in Revelation 22:1-4. The paved walkway transforms into the crystal river that flows from the throne of God and the trees, with their overflowing branches, becomes the tree of life covered with lush green leaves for the healing of the nations. In that day, there will be no need for sunlight or lamps because darkness (physical and spiritual) will no longer exist because of the visible reigning presence of the LORD. There are days when the condition of the world becomes overbearing and I feel like I can’t take another day. I close my eyes and

Beware of Flood Damaged Cars Caused by Hurricane Harvey Secretary of State Jesse White is warning consumers looking to purchase used vehicles to beware of flood damaged cars resulting from flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. In an effort to protect Illinois consumers, White has instructed his office to closely monitor title applications involving potential flood vehicles from the hurricane. The Secretary of State’s office will screen title applications from areas impacted by the flooding to determine if vehicles are registered in a flood county. White is requiring the applicants for those titles to submit a Hurricane Disclosure Statement to obtain a clean Illinois title. The statement must be signed by the registered owner of the vehicle and the insurance agent must verify that no flood claim was filed for the vehicle at the time of the hurricane. Any applicant unable or unwilling to supply the signed form will receive an Illinois Flood title only. White urged consumers to actively research as much as possible about a vehicle before making a purchase. Consumers may want to consult companies that provide additional information about the history of vehicles. In addition, it is always a good idea to have a mechanic inspect a vehicle before making a purchase. Carfax is providing a link to check for flood vehicles. To visit the free link, go to www.carfax.com/flood.

RICHARD ZEKVELD building block of the universe. Hydrogen excepted, every atom has a nucleus of multiple protons that cling to one another. Like positively charged magnets, they should repel one another. Yet a powerful, awe-inspiring force holds them together. If it didn’t, everything would fly apart. None of this is accidental. Jesus “is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17). In a world where so much falls apart, including us, he’s also the one who came to put it all back together. Including us. “God was pleased… through him to reconcile to himself all things… by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross” (Colossians 1:19a,20). At the heart of his plan to put it together, to hold it together, to put it back together, is his plan to put us back together in relationship with him. Call on Jesus. Be reconciled to God.

Think big. If our sun were the size of a basketball, the earth would be slightly larger than the head of a pin. Our sun is an average-sized star in a vast universe filled with stars. One estimate: there are 300 sextillion stars in the universe. That’s the number 3 followed by 23 zeros. Or 300,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 enormous balls of gas, clustered into billions of galaxies swirling in perfect sync, conducted by their Creator who calls each one by name. Think small. The cell is the basic building block of every living thing. Your body is made up of trillions of cells. Each is a finetuned factory with intricate machinery working together to perform a function. Each contains your unique blueprint. These cells come together as diverse organs which, in turn, work together in finelytuned systems that allow you to function moment by moment. Think smaller. The atom is the basic
