educating students at a very high level while promoting critical thinking and developing a world perspective. That includes investing in and training teachers. Jason Curl, IB Coordinator at Thorn Ridge High School, spoke on the value of college credit hours offered as part of the IB program. He said, “The IB program is an advanced placement program where students have an opportunity to gain college credits in high school. We are in our third year, and we have had one graduating class in our two-year program. This year, we roughly have about 35 students (enrolled).” Reports presented during the board meeting reflected a successful 2016-17 IB school year. Nineteen participating students at Thornton High (2016-17 school year) earned college credits in one or more classes; and as a team project at Thornton, IB students raised $1,500.00 to donate to a Kenyan village in East Africa for water purifiers. Several students in the 2016-2017 IB program at Thornwood received acceptance letters from Harvard, Yale, Howard University, Hampton, Loyola and the University of Illinois and 81 hours of earned college credit among participating student at Thornwood. Curl added that teachers in the IB program hope to grow the curriculum and get more students involved. Curl also stated that Thorn Ridge is among a handful of schools in the area with an IB curriculum. In other board business, Thornton Wildcat Principal Tony Ratliff received the South Cook 2016-17 Principal of the Year Award.

By Patricia Muhammad Thornton Township Board of Education District 205 held its second monthly meeting, September 13th in the Thorn Ridge High School Auditorium, with special emphasis on District 205 International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Local IB students, administrators, board members and faculty from School District 205 and School District 147 were present. Following routine committee reports and updates, five students addressed the board regarding the IB program. Jerimiah Johnson, a District 205 student from Riverdale rad a statement. “One of District 205 greatest accomplishments is bringing the International Baccalaureate program [to Thornton Township]. It gives our students an opportunity to compete internationally. When I started IB, I didn’t have the tools to think critically; now I can view situations with critical thinking in everyday life. I believe that there should be more advertisement for the International Baccalaureate program.” Brett Fickes, Director of Curriculum Innovative Instructor for District 205 agrees. “The International Baccalaureate program in District 205 has been a major success,” he said. “It’s the outcome of a lot of work. To just become an International Baccalaureate school and to be able to offer the diploma program is an extremely challenging application process,” he said. Fickes explained that participating schools must demonstrate full committment to the IB philosophy of

Bishop Noll Introduces New Hands-On STEM Class
Freshman Dmitri Lopez shows his group’s finished foot orthosis.
_______________________________
To prepare for her role as the Bishop Nol’s STEM teacher, Mary Albrecht took a course called Design and Modeling through Project Lead the Way (pltw.org), a nonprofit organization that provides learning experiences for K-12 students and teachers in the United States. Albrecht said that following the intense one-week session at Purdue University West Lafayette, she had great confidence in herself and that the class would be great. “This is the same feeling that I want my students to feel at the end of the class. I want them to know that they are great in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math,” she said. In fact, her freshman students recently completed their first project, designing a therapeutic foot orthosis for a person with cerebral palsy. Students looked forward to coming to class, working on their orthosis, collaborating, and becoming innovators, Albrecht said.
“It was fun to watch students think their design through and really talk to each other. I could see their ideas develop and see their excitement. There was great energy in the room.” The class teaches students transportable skills that will carry over in their other fields of study. Bishop Noll Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick explained that STEM is a vital component of educating students in today’s world. “Through our STEM curriculum, students learn to identify problems, design, test, evaluate, and present solutions. The STEM curriculum is imperative for our students to learn how to become problem solvers.” Pastrick continued, “As a Project Lead the Way school, we will offer Intro to Engineering next year.” For more information on Bishop Noll Institute, a private Catholic college preparatory experience, visit bishopnoll.org.

The Children’s Theatre Company of South Suburban College announces open auditions for Michele L. Vacca’s “Rapunzel and the Frog Prince.” It’s a uniquely comical mashup that cleverly blends the two Grimm’s tales into one story. This isn’t your standard fairy tale! The auditions will take place on September 28 and 29, 2017 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Readings will be held in the Kindig Performing Arts Center on the main campus at 15800 S. State Street in South Holland, IL. Director Ellie Shunko of Lansing will cast 12 actors between the ages of 18 and 70 of all ages, colors and sizes. Being fairly physically fit, a willingness to try anything, a sense of fun and loads of energy are big bonuses. Performances are scheduled for January 13 and 16-20, 2018 and will be held during the day for local grammar school aged children. Cast members are required to attend all dress rehearsals and performances. Auditions are open to all community members as well as SSC students. Appointments and prepared audition materials are not necessary. Auditioners will read from scenes which will be available at the time of auditions. Copies of the script are on reserve in the SSC library. Everyone is welcome to attend both auditions. Be prepared to list all conflicts with the rehearsal schedule. For character descriptions, rehearsal schedule and more information, visit the Kindig Performing Arts Center’s website at http://learn.ssc.edu/theatre/ or email ssctheatre@ssc.edu. For more information about all of SSC’s programs, admissions and registration, please visit www.ssc.edu or contact the Admissions Office at (708) 210-5718.

The staff and board of directors of Humane S o c i e t y Calumet Area have announced this week Pictured is Humane Indiana’s that they new logo. h a v e officially changed their name to Humane Indiana. Although their name has changed, their commitment to leading the community in the humane treatment of all animals remains the same. Rachel Delaney, CEO shares, “The organization has grown and changed so much since I started as a volunteer in 2004. I’ve had the pleasure of watching us transform from a small animal shelter to an organization that also includes a low-cost spay/neuter clinic, wildlife center, education center, and resale shop.” The organization is committed as ever to sheltering homeless animals and helping them find loving homes. When their name changed from Hammond Humane Society to Humane Society Calumet Area, it reflected the evolution of the organization beyond one city; the change to Humane Indiana represents the expansion of services to all of Northern Indiana and beyond to represent the scope and reach of the organization’s impact. A new logo along with an updated vision statement has been created with the help of Sawdust Creative Agency and Humane

Congratulations to Richard and Linda Trout of Lynwood on their 50th wedding anniversary! Richard is the son of Detroit Tiger great, “Dizzy” Trout (long time South Holland resident) and brother of Sox and Cubs pitcher, Steve Trout. The couple, both former teachers, have five grown children, all T.F. South and Wheaton College graduates. They also have 16 grandchildren who live within an hour’s drive, so their lives are very family centered. Blessings to you both on your landmark anniversary!

Lake Central Superintendent Named District I Superintendent of the Year Dr. Larry Veracco, superintendent of Lake Central School Corporation, was chosen by members of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents as the 2018 District I Superintendent of the Year. Winners are selected by other superintendents in their district who consider the qualifications and accomplishments of area colleagues and their instructional leadership during a time of limited resources. Veracco has been Lake Central superintendent since 2010, although he served the district as assistant superintendent from 2007 to 2010 and as assistant principal of Lake Central High School for eight years before that. Shortly after Veracco became superintendent, the state announced a mid-year funding cut for all Indiana school districts at the same time Lake Central School Corporation was asking the community to support additional funding to upgrade dilapidated school buildings. Between 2010 and 2012, Lake Central Schools cut $7.25 million from its budget, mostly through additional efficiencies in transportation and custodial maintenance. The budget reduction also increased class sizes and caused staffing adjustments. When the savings began producing budget relief, the district was able to create a budget surplus, rather than operating on a small margin. The adjustments have allowed the district to focus on creating competitive salary structures and improving student services. Despite operating with meager increases in funding from the state formula, Lake Central implemented a teacher mentor program at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year. This support of teachers new to Lake Central by dedicated veteran staff members has been beneficial, especially for staff members who are new to the profession. Veracco notes that Lake Central is one of very few districts with similar demographics to make significant academic progress without the benefit of an operating funds referendum. Veracco is a member of the Schererville Rotary and the Dyer Chamber of Commerce and is the 2017-2018 chair of the Northwest Indiana Superintendents’ Study Council. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from Indiana State University. One of the eight district winners will be named Indiana Superintendent of the Year for 2018 and will represent Indiana in the American Association of School Administrators National Superintendent of the Year program. District I includes Fulton, Jasper, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Newton, Porter, Pulaski and Starke counties.

Indiana Red Cross Has Critical Need for Fluent Spanish-Speaking Volunteers The Indiana Region of the American Red Cross is seeking to meet three critical needs, including volunteers who speak fluent Spanish and willing to deploy to areas affected by Harvey and Irma; volunteers willing to support disaster relief efforts throughout Indiana; and volunteers willing to deploy to areas hit by Hurricane Harvey and Irma. All outof-state deployments are a minimum of two weeks. People willing to support disaster relief efforts in-state or outside of the state are encouraged to contact 1-888684-1441. Following this call, you will be contacted within 48-72 hours. Currently, this is the quickest way to support those impacted. “We continue to be proud of the astounding humanitarian spirit displayed by so many Hoosiers hearing the call to support those who have been impacted by the destruction and devastation of Hurricane Harvey and Irma,” said Duchess Adjei, regional communication director for the Indiana Region of the American Red Cross. “This is a time for communities to come together and support one another.” The Red Cross is working closely with the entire response community— government agencies, other non-profit groups, faithbased organizations, area businesses and others—to coordinate emergency relief efforts and get help to people as quickly as possible. Individuals looking for other ways to help can visit
redcross.org or text the word HARVEY or IRMA to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Donations enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from this disaster. The Indiana Region serves 87 Indiana counties consisting of six Red Cross chapters: Central Indiana (Indianapolis headquarters), Northern Indiana (South Bend headquarters), Northeast Indiana (Fort Wayne headquarters), Northwest (Merrillville headquarters), Southern Indiana (Evansville headquarters) and West Central Indiana (Terre Haute headquarters). For more information on the Indiana Region please visit www.redcross.org/local/ in. Follow the Indiana Region on Twitter at: @ INRedCross, on Instagram at: @indianaredcross, or on Facebook at www.facebook. com/INRedCross. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-for-profit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. From left to right: CDO Lisa Carpenter, COO Brian Fitzpatrick, Board Member Scott Filler, Donor Thomas Ray Crowel, and CEO Rachel Delaney are pictured with the new Mobile Adoption Vehicle. –––––––––––––––––––––––
Humane Indiana recently unveiled a new mobile adoption vehicle donated by Thomas Ray Crowel. The vehicle will take adoptable animals to events and off site locations to help more animals find homes. Lisa Carpenter, Chief Development Officer of Humane Indiana shares, “We are truly honored to have Mr. Crowel support our organization with this tremendous gift. The mobile adoption vehicle will increase our impact in the community and help bring so many homeless animals to loving homes. The mobile adoption vehicle has been on our wish list for such a long time, and now we will use it to maximize our reach throughout the state of Indiana. I cannot thank Mr. Crowel enough for his generous donation.”
The vehicle is 26 feet long and has 21 cages, some of which can be combined to accommodate larger animals. The vehicle is equipped to provide the animals a clean, comfortable environment. There is a space for families to meet animals and to conduct adoptions in the vehicle. A gas-powered generator ensures the animals stay cool and comfortable while visiting off site events. Shutters on the sides roll up so adopters can view animals from outside the truck through tempered glass. Business Partners and community services groups can schedule the mobile adoption vehicle to visit their place of business for client appreciation days or adoption events. To learn more about Humane Indiana’s mobile adoption
vehicle or to request a visit to your event or location visit www.humaneindiana.org. About Humane Society Calumet Area Founded by concerned citizen Evelyn Sweitzer in 1941, Humane Indiana aims to lead the community in the humane treatment of animals by providing vital community services. In 2016, 1,372 homeless animals found homes through Humane Indiana and 77 lost animals were reunited with their families. Additional Humane Indiana services include spay and neuter surgeries for families with financial hardship at Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic, a humane education team that teaches local children about pet safety and compassion, and rehabilitation for wildlife.

Secretary of State Jesse White is warning consumers looking to purchase used vehicles to beware of flood damaged cars resulting from flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. In an effort to protect Illinois consumers, White has instructed his office to closely monitor title applications involving potential flood vehicles from the hurricane. The Secretary of State’s office will screen title applications from areas impacted by the flooding to determine if vehicles are registered in a flood county. White is requiring the applicants for those titles to submit a Hurricane Disclosure Statement to obtain a clean Illinois title. The statement must be signed by the registered owner of the vehicle and the insurance agent must verify that no flood claim was filed for the vehicle at the time of the hurricane. Any applicant unable or unwilling to supply the signed form will receive an Illinois Flood title only. White urged consumers to actively research as much as possible about a vehicle before making a purchase. Consumers may want to consult companies that provide additional information about the history of vehicles. In addition, it is always a good idea to have a mechanic inspect a vehicle before making a purchase. Carfax is providing a link to check for flood vehicles. To visit the free link, go to www.carfax.com/flood.

ARLO KALLEMEYN Our country has experienced two hurricanes in the past two weeks; first Harvey in Texas and now Irma in Florida. The residents in Florida and Texas will have a huge task of rebuilding ahead of them. Here are some inspirational quotes from those who have experienced difficulty in their lives and have gone on to do great things. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Texans and Floridians. 1) “The way get started is to quit talking and begin doing.” —Walt Disney. 2) “The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity. The optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty.” — Winston Churchill 3) “Don’t let yesterday take up too much of today.” — Will Rogers 4) “You learn more from failure than from success. Don’t let it stop you. Failure builds character.” — Unknown 5) “It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” —Vince Lombardi 6) “If you are working on something that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” — Steve Jobs 7) “People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”— Rob Siltanen 8) “Failure will never overtake me if my determination to succeed is strong enough.” — Og Mandino 9) “We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.” — Maya Angelou

Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Laborists Cherise Cokley, MD, (right, standing) and John Taylor, MD, (seated) discuss patient care with staff at Community Hospital’s Family Birthing Center. ______________________________________
provides additional specialized support in addition to the capable nursing presence Since the laborists’ “office” is the hospital, they are familiar with the hospital’s policies, activities, education, outreach coordination and shared resources. For example, they can fortify efforts by the hospital to help reduce infant mortality rates Because laborists are in the hospital round the clock, they are able to maintain communication between all team members across shifts, track test results and order necessary follow up tests promptly Community Hospital’s first obstetrics unit opened in 1979, with its neonatal intensive care unit opening three years later. In 2014, the hospital expanded and opened its $34 million project Parkview Tower that includes three floors dedicated to moms, babies and outstanding care. What makes Community Hospital’s Family Birthing Center care a cut above is the complete spectrum of acute care available to mothers and babies, explains Meyer. “Our surgical and anesthesia teams are in-house 24/7. We offer a critical care transport to and from our hospital which is enhanced by our maternal-fetal medicine partnership with the University of Chicago Medicine. Now we have laborists to enhance the management of expectant moms’ care, too.” “Pregnancy and childbirth are not predictable,” said Meece. “There are a lot of unknowns. The laborist is here to manage emergent obstetrical situations until your primary care obstetrician arrives. For expectant parents, laborists provide peace of mind.” For more information about the Family Birthing Center and Labor & Delivery care at Community Hospital in Munster, visit https://www.comhs.org/services/familybirthing-centers/community-hospitalfamily-birthing-center.
When it comes to having a baby, there are many uncertainties including the expectant mother’s exact due date. While your obstetrician has planned to be present for labor and delivery, in some cases that is not always possible. For those unplanned events, Community Hospital’s Family Birthing Center has a laborist—a board-certified obstetrician —on site to deliver baby 24 hours a day, seven days per week. Laborists do not replace the expectant mother’s primary obstetrician, but work in tandem or in partnership to assure that round the clock, she has the best care available no matter when baby needs them. “If there is an OB emergency and the mom comes in through the emergency department, no matter what time it is, the laborist is on hand to see her immediately,” said Teresa Meece, RN, manager of Labor & Delivery at Community Hospital. “As board-certified, skilled obstetricians our laborists serve as an additional safety net to make sure mothers get prompt excellent care.” This model of care enhances patient safety and leads to better outcomes for both mother and baby, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. “We decided to move forward with the laborist program because we felt that it was key to providing all the elements required for the most comprehensive Mother-Baby care,” said Carla Meyer, director, Patient Care Services. Benefits of having laborists at the hospital include: The laborist assures that a board-certified obstetrician is in the hospital at all times to attend to immediate concerns and helps streamline care between all members of the Labor & Delivery team The laborist is prepared to help with any emergencies concerning the mother (hemorrhaging or seizures) after delivery and

Climate Change: Fact or Fiction?” ANNA M. CAISON
Garage Sales in Dyer
through nature, nowhere, in chapter 37, does Elihu allude to God using the weather to punish men. A more plausible explanation for the increase in number and intensity of hurricanes and other natural disasters occurring around the world can be found in the 8th chapter of the book of Romans. The Apostle Paul teaches that we are the cause of the disturbances we see in nature (vs 20-21). Our willful rebellion against God’s command that we love one another, and lack of care for the earth He gave us to enjoy has caused the deterioration of all creation. The facts laid out in the 2007 movie “An Inconvenient Truth” hosted by former Vice-President Al Gore are very compelling considering the above passage of scripture. Paul continues (vs 22-23) with words of Hope. Even though the earth is decaying daily, we can rejoice! Because, when we receive our glorified body, it too will be made new having been freed from the bondage of decay. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com. Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

GOD WITH US
The Internet was in an uproar last week over comments made by actor Kirk Cameron regarding hurricanes Harvey and Irma. He used a quote from Job 37 to imply that God sent hurricane Harvey to punish man and to make him humble. Job is one of those books in the Bible that requires careful study of its theme, background and context in which it was written. The conversations of Job’s friends who came to comfort him after his tragic losses, made assumptions (as Kirk Cameron did) about God that were not true. In Job’s day, as in ours, the general belief was that if you were wealthy, you were a righteous person and God’s favor rested on you. If tragedy befell you, as it did with Job, it meant God was angry with you because you had committed some great sin against Him and humanity. Even Job believed this, which is why he accuses God of making a mistake in bringing calamity on him—because after all, he was a righteous man! The quote Cameron referred to was not made by Job or God. It was made by Elihu who speaks in defense of God to Job. The passage expresses the wonder and majesty of God revealed in nature. Although Elihu states that God teaches us about Himself

Protected 92 Year-Old Client WOODROW WILCOX On September 7, 2017, our agent Moe Qadar delivered to me three bills that our 92 year old client from Griffith received. The bills totaled $876. I went to work on these bills right away. I phoned our client’s insurance company to learn what it knew of these bills. Medicare never sent these claims to the insurance company. I noticed something else. Nothing had been paid on the bills. Medicare had not paid anything. But, Medicare had not refused to pay either. In such a case, it is likely that the medical firm either forgot to file the claims with Medicare or the medical firm tried to file the claims with Medicare electronically and the signal was interrupted or lost. I wrote a letter to the medical firm and asked

Financial Advice Column
Protect Three Key Goals With Life Insurance BOB KRYGSHELD September is Life Insurance Awareness Month. And “awareness” is an appropriate designation, because many people remain unaware of the many ways in which life insurance can help families meet their key financial goals. Here are three of the biggest of these objectives, as seen through the eyes of a hypothetical couple, Jim and Joan: Pay off mortgage—If one of them dies well before their mortgage is paid off, could the other one afford to keep making payments to remain in the house with the children? It might be quite difficult— the death of either Jim or Joan would likely put an enormous financial strain on the surviving spouse. But with the proceeds of a life insurance policy, the survivor could continue making the house payments. Educate children—Jim and Joan would like to see both of their young children eventually go to college. Of course, college is expensive: For the 2016-17 school year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was about $20,000 for instate students at public universities and more than $45,000 for private schools. And these costs are likely to continue climbing. Jim and Joan have started putting money away in a tax-advantaged 529 savings plan, but if something were to happen to one of them, the surviving spouse might be hard pressed to continue saving. But the proceeds of a life insurance death benefit could be enough to fund some, or perhaps all, of the college costs.
Provide for family’s future—Jim and Joan’s future income is their most valuable asset as they continue working. However, an unexpected death could leave this dualincome family with a single income that may not cover all financial obligations and retirement contributions— or even maintain the family’s current lifestyle. Life insurance could help cover these needs. Plus, the death benefit to the family may be tax-free. Clearly, a life insurance policy could allow a bereaved spouse to continue on with life, despite, of course, the devastating emotional loss of a partner. But how much insurance should Jim and Joan own? You might read that most people need a death benefit of seven to 10 times their annual income. This might be a good starting point, but everyone’s situation is different. You should consider all factors — including liabilities, income replacement, final expenses and education— to get an accurate picture of how much insurance is appropriate. A financial professional can help you with this calculation. Take some to time this month to review your insurance situation. It’s a good idea to review your coverage to make certain the amount and type of insurance is still appropriate for your needs. As we’ve seen, the right coverage can make a huge difference in the lives of your loved ones. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

CALUMET CITY HISTORICAL SOCIETY DEBUTED NEW RESTAURANT CALLED “EAT” IN ‘DOWNTOWN’ HAMMOND: The former Woolworth’s store (and before that a ba n k) ha s been t u r ned i nto a combination banquet hall and soon-to-be restaurant, thanks to the vision of Ray Garcia who has been at the helm of the 30,000 SF building for severa l yea rs. Garcia’s passion is gentrifying blighted neig hborhoods, or “broken w indows blocks” as he calls them, and bringing them back to viability. Garcia lives in one of t he apa r t ments at 5700 Hoh ma n, Hammond, IN. To say Raymundo Garcia is a busy guy is an understatement. The CCHS Autumn Dinner Saturday September 9th, 2017 featured a guest speaker whose wealth of information regarding the founding of “The Region” on both sides of the Illinois/Indiana borders is staggering. Pictured here are Mike Wolski, President of the Calumet City Historical Society and Ray Garcia, owner of “Eat.” ***

family! The O’Leary theory persists nearly 150 years later. How easily we take damaging assertions about others at face value! We don’t bother to verify before we believe them or pass them on. Why do we assume the worst about others? Why the craving to find fault, to assign blame? Does it help us feel better about ourselves? Every time we hear an unflattering, unverified assertion about another, it’s time to check our hearts. Is there something in us that wants to believe it? To pass it on? Why? Ask God to show you. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23-24). Then, confess it. Christ died for this sin too. Finally, resolve to be truthful and true in relationships.

Motivation is a Must MIKE BUDER Buying a home is indeed a process. For some it is a longer process than for others---and the key is “motivation”. I often hear potential buyers complain that they just don’t think that their last Realtor worked hard enough for them, and they can’t understand why the Realtor stopped calling them with new listings. However, when I conduct my own assessment of them as buyers, I discover that they aren’t that motivated and every house they’ve seen is just “not quite right”. However, I know that viewing 50 or more homes should result in some sort of buying activity. And, as an expert, in the home buying process, I also know that chances are that this person is not ready to buy a home. After all, no home is perfect and yet homes are bought and sold every day. Now, some people are just nit pickers by nature. Nit pickers still buy homes when they are motivated--but they will mention to you every single thing wrong with it. They simply want you to know that they know the home’s imperfections. It just has to be said. A nit picker is

RICHARD ZEKVELD
That’s the version of the old ditty I learned growing up. I accepted it at face value. A feisty bovine, belonging to Kate O’Leary, kicked over a lantern and started the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. That fire raged for three days, killing about 300 people and burning over three square miles of Chicago. One problem: the official investigation at that time concluded there was no proof that Mrs. O’ Leary—or her cow—were responsible for starting the Great Chicago Fire. Theories and speculations abounded. Sadly, public opinion eventually settled on Kate O’Leary as a convenient scapegoat. Imagine what that was like for her and her

different from a person who just isn’t ready to buy a home. As a Realtor, I’ve learned that the last thing a person who is not quite ready to buy wants to hear is that they are not quite ready. After all, they think that they are ready – they are prequalified and reviewing listings daily. What they don’t realize is that if they don’t have the right motivation, you could show them a hundred almost perfect houses and they would not buy. An experienced Realtor knows that when a person wants to buy a house – they will buy a house – and that usually happens sooner rather than later when the proper motivation is present. Indeed, often it isn’t about houses being “not quite right”, but rather about the buyer being “not quite ready”.
