Twelve-year old Garland Benson is raising funds to help defeat Batten disease, a rare, fatal, inherited neurological disorder which threatens his 15 year-old sister Christiane’s life.

_______________________________

Garland Benson, a freckled-face 12-year-old with a winning smile, is on a mission—one that’s very personal, but could have far-reaching implications. He just needs a little help from 100,000 friends and strangers. Here’s why: Garland’s 15-year-old sister, Christiane, has juvenile Batten disease, a rare, fatal, inherited neurological disorder. It’s the same disease that was responsible for the July deaths in Utah of three siblings over the course of three days. Children with the incurable disease suffer progressive vision loss, commonly followed within a couple of years by seizures and, as time passes, the loss of motor functions and speech. That’s followed by premature death, usually in the late teens or early 20s. In 2008, the parents of Garland and Christiane, Craig and Charlotte Benson, formed the non-profit Beyond Batten Disease Foundation (www.beyondbatten.org) with the goal of helping find a cure. Through research funded by the foundation, progress is now being made on a treatment that, although not a cure, could slow down the disease’s progression, perhaps buying time for young people like Christiane. The foundation is trying to raise $6 million that’s needed to help hurry that research along by getting it through an expensive validation and development process so that it can receive FDA approval for clinical trials. Enter Garland, a boy with a big heart for his sister and an understanding that small gifts can add up to extraordinary amounts if the multiplication factor is large enough. “I decided to raise $1 million of that $6 million on my own,”

he says. “If I can get 100,000 people to give $10 each I’ll have $1 million. I think we can easily do that.” With his goal clear, Garland confidently set out in March to achieve his objective—and do whatever he could for his sister and other young people who have Batten disease. Many donors have left heartfelt messages for him, such as: “Garland, you are the sweetest, best brother a girl could have.” “You inspire me to make a difference.” “Thank you for blessing your sister and so many others.” Garland quickly found that his self-imposed undertaking wasn’t quite as easy as he hoped, but he has persevered and so far has raised about $90,000. His optimism isn’t faltering yet. “I think it would be amazing if we find a cure,” Garland says. Although Batten is genetic, and families can have more than one child with the disease, Garland does not have it. He’s not a carrier either, so he can’t pass it on to his children. Despite the disease, Christiane is a cheerleader, has joined her family on ski trips and on horseback-riding adventures, and continues to be an inspiration for her younger brother. “It’s really cool how she can do all that stuff and not be able to see,” Garland says. “But what I’d really like is for her to be able to lead a normal life like me.” Those who want to donate can text the word HERO to 501051 and $10 will be added to their next cell phone bill. Donations can also be made through Garland’s donor page on the Beyond Batten Disease Foundation’s website, at beyondbatten. donorpages.com/TeamBeyondBatten/GarlandBenson/. One person at a time, he will surely reach his goal.

Simple Question Starts International Organization By Tom Archer, South Holland Ministerial Association Eighty years ago an elder from my church named Bill Chapman started a ministry of giving away Bibles. He went door to door asking, “Do you have a Bible?” And if the answer was no, he would ask, “If I give you a Bible will you commit to read it?” That one-man ministry grew into the Home Bible League, and then into the World Home Bible League. Today it is known as Bible League International. For many years its headquarters was in South Holland; today you can see it off highway 394 in Crete. My church recently rediscovered Bill Chapman’s vision. This past month we have been knocking on doors in South Holland, asking once again these two questions, and we have been well received. There was a time we might have expected most people already

had several Bibles in there home, but this is increasingly not the case. So our prayer has been that God’s Word would be planted in “good soil”—ready hearts—and bear the fruit of the Spirit. Jesus once told a parable about a farmer who generously planted seed, some falling on the hardened path, some on rocky ground, some amidst the thorns, and some on good soil. Jesus likened the seed to God’s Word and said that when it is planted in good soil it produces a crop, thirty fold, sixty fold and even a hundred fold. It’s still true today; when we receive God’s Word it begins to transform us, and we bear good fruit—such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). If you need a Bible, and will commit to read it, let us know at www.thorncreek.org/bible.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our neighbors have pit bulls. One came on our property and tried to attack my husband while he was mowing our lawn. Plus, the dog almost got my other neighbor and her two little dogs. I have called the pound, they said if the dog gets off of the owner’s property to call them and they will come out. I called them when the pit bull almost got me plus our sheriff department and nothing was done. I have e-mailed my senators and governor. Nothing. I can’t even get a leash law enforced. What can we do? Answer: Pet owners have a responsibility for their animals. When a potentiallydangerous pet is involved, the stakes in such matters are serious. Get a video camera, record examples of the dog off the property and then, speak with an attorney to see if there are grounds for a suit by you and your neighbors against the dog owners. Then ask if you can sue the local government for failing to enforce its own regulations. Sharing your video with a local TV station might encourage assistance from a local office. Question: We sold a house in November 2016. And now, in October 2017, we’re being

asked to pay for repairs. The buyers had an inspector check the house when they agreed to purchase it. Now they are having problems with remodeling and want us to fix whatever a new inspection report finds. Do we have to pay? Answer: Did you disclose all material problems known to you at the time of the sale? If yes, when does your responsibility end? The purchasers had a home inspection at the time of purchase. It was satisfactory to them otherwise they would not have bought, they would have required repairs or they would at least have known about given problems. The time for the buyers to make demands was when they negotiated the purchase. Today they are no longer buyers, they are owners and responsible for the property. Estimated Family Cost on FAFSA is the Only Cost for Student

By Tom Emery A bold new program at Blackburn College will fully meet the financial needs of students both from Illinois and anywhere in the United States. Called the Blackburn Promise, the program has generated much interest in the college, a nationally recognized liberal-arts school 60 miles northeast of St. Louis. Blackburn is known for its Student Work Program, one of only eight in the nation and the only one that is student-managed. Peter Oswald, the Director of Marketing and Publications at Blackburn, says the new plan “goes to the heart of the College mission. “The cost of a college education is a concern to many people,” continued Oswald. “The Blackburn Promise provides the opportunity to receive a high-quality education to prepare students to become leaders in the workplace and in their communities.” Under that program, students will file the FAFSA, which calculates the Estimated Family Contribution, or EFC. Blackburn will then recognize the EFC as the only cost for the student. “Because of escalating costs, students at most schools have to come up with more money out of pocket, because their financial aid packages don’t cover the difference between tuition and their EFC,” said Oswald. “The Blackburn Promise provides a simple

and equitable way to assign costs for a college education here, and will completely fulfill each student’s financial need. “If the student’s EFC is zero, then the student won’t have to pay anything for tuition at Blackburn,” continued Oswald. “If the EFC is $8,000, then that’s all the student will have to pay.” The difference in tuition costs will be covered from Blackburn’s endowment and other funding sources. Less than six percent of schools nationwide offer a similar plan and only two, Northwestern University and the University of Chicago, are in Illinois. Others on the list include several Ivy League schools and some of the nation’s finest liberal-arts institutions, such as Amherst, Bryn Mawr, and Williams. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for young people to obtain a top-quality education at a low cost,” remarked Oswald. “The mission of the College throughout its 180 years of history has been to provide affordable access to higher education, and the Blackburn Promise addresses that goal. “We have a rigorous academic program at Blackburn, and the Work Program gives students the tools they need to advance in their careers,” concluded Oswald. “Now, Blackburn is providing more opportunities for a great education to students from around the nation.” Tom Emery may be reached at 217-710-8392 or ilcivilwar@yahoo.com.

women students at GSU who exemplify extraordinary leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, and a commitment to supporting other women. Governors State President Elaine P. Maimon expressed her excitement about the upcoming conference. “I was absolutely delighted when I found out C200 reached out to GSU. I participated in a C200 event last year, and events like these really benefit the women students who participate. And, the fact that only our students have the opportunity to compete for the scholarships is extraordinary.” The C200 Reachout conference is designed to inspire and motivate women who are looking to become leaders. It offers a great opportunity for all women to network and for students to connect with mentors. Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

RICHARD ZEKVELD I was in a foul mood. I’d gone to bed with it the night before. I’d gotten up with it, from the wrong side of the bed, of course, in the morning. The weather didn’t help—grey, with a damp chill. Grumble. Several days a week, I ‘pray-walk’ through a different South Holland neighborhood. Normally, it’s a great experience. Today? Dismal. Like the atmosphere. And my attitude. Back home, I plugged away, joylessly, at my work. Later in the day, I grabbed my phone and my keys on my way out. But now, my license. Where on earth was it? Those who know me are smirking right now. This is not the first time I’ve asked this question. Nor will it be the last. But, today of all days! I looked high and low. No sign of it. Then I remembered. My phone had been in the same pocket as my license on my prayer-walk. A big no-no. I re-traced my

steps. No license. Later, I heard my wife Nancy upstairs, talking with someone at the door. Soon she came down and said, “An angel just dropped off your license. She said, ‘I found it outside. I know how expensive it is to get a new one. So here you go’.” If you’re the woman who brought back my license, thank you! And God bless you! This was God’s way of putting his hand on my shoulder and saying, “Do you really have so much to be grumpy about? I’m good to you every day. You just need eyes to see it.” God doesn’t always send a kind woman to return my license when I lose it. This time, however, that’s how he chose to get my attention. WOODROW WILCOX On October 4, 2017, I received two thank you notes from clients that I had helped with Medicare related matters. One was from a senior citizen in Portage. She thanked me for helping her with her Medicare related medical bill problem. She told me that so many of her friends are having Medicare related medical bill problems, too. But, they are afraid to change insurance companies for fear of losing all coverage. It is often possible for a senior citizen to change insurance agents without changing insurance companies. Legally, I am unable to help people with medical bill problems unless our agency is their agency. Then, I can investigate the bill problem and work towards a resolution. The other note of thanks was from the daughter of a senior citizen in Kouts, Indiana. She thanked me for working with her to help her mother fix both a medical

Chimney Repair

bill and medical premiums problem. As a result of my work, her mother received a refund check of $6,220.24. All the help that I gave these clients was FREE OF CHARGE. The owners, managers, agents, and staff of this insurance agency really do care about our clients. We have a reputation for “going the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. If your agency does not give this high level of service to senior citizen clients, maybe you should switch to and insurance agency that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that insurance agency save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Neuromas

Cannot be combined with any other offer. Not valid on parts. Offer Expires 10/15/17

Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Pennies on the Dollar MIKE BUDER There have been so many myths throughout the years: There’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, there’s a fountain of youth in Florida, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, antivirus software is 100% effective. Today’s current myth seems to be that you can buy homes for pennies on the dollar. This past week, I had a buyer that wanted to offer 50% less than the current list price because the home was a “short sale.” The buyer said, “we want to offer $50,000 CASH and we know that CASH will be accepted over buyers who need to finance.” Okay, but the home is listed at $100,000, it is a short sale, there are already 6 contracts into the bank all at or OVER the list price and the bank has to approve the short sale. Every week I educate potential buyers about the real estate market here in the south suburbs of Chicago. Yes, there are a few REO’s, corporate owned, foreclosures and private sales out there that you might pick up for pennies on the dollar. But, you need to look at the total cost and time of bringing that home up to livable condition because the homes that sell for “pennies on the dollar” are just that—total fix ups!!! Then there are short sales. The bank/mortgage For sale: TV converter boxes $40 eac; small room hundifier, $10; lg bulletin board, $10; western prints in oak frames, $30 each. 708877-6157 For sale: Medaust series heavy duty bench grinder $35; mettler toledo digital scale capacity 30 lb x 0.01 lb. $60. 708-474-2750 For sale: New powers hand 2 in 1 jigsaw/saw, still in box $25; new all step can stainless steel $20. 708-4749568 For sale: China cabinet black with gold etching, like new $125; ornate gold framed beviled mirror 28x39 $50. 708-902-6447 For sale: Weed eaters $45; computer monitor/Dell $18; A lot of beanie babies, $48; over 100 barbie dolls, all varieties $75 with clothes on; Corning ware dish set, 22pc. 708-528-1125 For sale: Retiring Teacher selling over 100 “big books” for 3.00 each and other misc. teacher items. 708-932-6159 RIDGID Pipe Cutter - cuts up to 1” pipe, high quality tool. Like new condition. $35. leave message. 708-4399801 med. large dog crate-folds f o r s t o r a g e re m ov a b l e plastic bottom. Great shape $25. Craftman toolbox, 3 drawer lockable lid $25. free socket set. 708-891-3432 Prime door solid core (6 panel) 32” wide x 77” long x 1 3.4” thick, has glass insert 24” x 36” painted white, perfect shape $30 obo. 708481-6907

companies are NOT going to give away the property. They are going to get a few BPO’s (broker price opinions) and/or appraisals to get an idea what the “fair market value” of the home actually is. They are going to set the price—it may be slightly below fair market, more like 95-98% of the fair market. Some homes receive multiple offers that drive the price up over the list price. The banks know this—they pay people to tell them this. Now, I’m telling you for free! If you’re looking to buy a home, you need to work with an experienced realtor who will tell you the truth—not the urban myths your second cousin’s brother-in-law from a previous marriage’s friend said. Good Realtors will put the numbers in black and white and tell you what’s really happening in the market. No myths, just the facts. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. Put Lessons From “Retirement Week” to Work BOB KRYGSHELD To raise public awareness about the importance of saving for retirement, Congress has designated the third week of October as National Save for Retirement Week. What lessons can you learn from this event? First of all, save early – and save often. Too many people put off saving for retirement until they are in their 40s or even 50s. If you wait until you are in this age group it will be more challenging than if you had begun saving and investing while you were in your 20s or early 30s. If you delay saving for retirement, you may have to put away large sums of money each year to accumulate enough to support a comfortable retirement lifestyle. Plus, to achieve the growth you need, you might have to invest more aggressively than you’d like, which means taking on more risk. And even then, there are no guarantees of getting the returns you require. But if you start when you are still in the early stages of your career, you can make smaller monthly contributions to your retirement accounts. And by putting time on your side, you’ll be able to take advantage of compounding – the ability to earn money on your principal and your earnings. Maximize your opportunities to invest in the tax-advantaged retirement accounts

such as an IRA and an employer-sponsored retirement plan. If you have a 401(k)-type plan at work, contribute as much as you can afford every year, and increase your contributions whenever your salary goes up. At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. A key step you can take is to reduce the barriers to building your retirement savings. One such obstacle is debt. The larger your debt payments, the less you will be able to invest each month. It’s not easy to keep your debt under control, but do the best you can. One other barrier to accumulating retirement resources is the occasional large expense resulting from a major car repair, sizable medical bills etc.. Try to build an emergency fund big enough to cover three to six months’ of living expenses. Since you’ll need instant access to this money, you’ll want to keep it in a liquid, lowrisk account. By following these steps, you can go a long way toward turning your retirement dreams into reality. COLDWELL BANKER/BURNET TITLE AGEN TS HEL P SCHER ERV IL L E F.D. OB SE RV E F I R E PR E V E N T ION WEEK: Officals of the Schererville Fire Depa r t ment were del ig hte d at t he community turn-out Saturday October 7th, 2017 and with the number of real estate agents who turned out to help fire personnel with entertaining the visitors, young and old a like that day. Broker Manager Jim Oster of the CB Schererville Residential office had high praise for those who volunteered their time to help blow up balloons, pass out literature, conduct a coloring contest and register guests for great prizes which had been donated. Among those at the event are Jim Oster, Jim Banasiak, Gina Musolino (who has been going to the event for many years), Greg Myricks, Tom Gregory (and family), Rick Janiak, Tanya, JaniceMK, Burnet Title Robert and Donna. Also pictured here are Schererville Deputy Chief Bob Patterson and Jennifer Deenihan with Quinlan 4, and Molly 3. The smoke house taught youngsters to stop, drop and roll to get out of a burning house and other lifesaving techniques geared to young children. Many local businesses were on hand to offer up a taste of their restaurant fare, talk about insurance and just generally how to stay safe both in and outside of our homes. Bravo to the Schererville Fire Department! *** N W I V ET ER A NS ACT ION COU NCIL HOST 4TH ANNUAL VETERAN’S HONOR LUNCHEON: The Halls of St. George in Schererville was the setting for veterans (and their significant others) from WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf Wars to be both honored and recognized for their service. A special performance by the Pipes and Drums of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department was awe inspiring and the collective reverence for the United States f lag both in song and spirit was reassuring. The program began with the Posting of Colors by American Legion Post 16, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a fabulous a Capella rendition of patriotic songs by 87 year old Harold Hull, a WWII Veteran who sang without accompaniment and whose strong and rich voice brought us to tears ! Kathy Kazmierczak acted as hostess and MC and put everyone at ease. Most poignant were remarks regarding POW/MI A’s whose families have yet to receive closure. The event started at 10:30 and was over by Noon, but we wished it could go on much longer. Adding to the color and character of the event was History Teacher Tom Clark of Lake Central High School and his trio of senior girl historians who helped put together a comprehensive gallery of veterans and their related memorabilia in bits and pieces salvaged from the ravages of time, under glass for a permanent home. Plans are already underway for the 5th annual such event in 2018. *** V ET E R A N’S DAY SE RV ICE AT T H E LANSING VETERAN’S MEMORIAL: Set

for Sunday November 5th, 2017 at 2 p.m. This year’s Veteran’s Day service at the Lansing Memorial will honor our Nation’s Veterans and the flag they fought under. The service will also remember the 100th anniversary of WWI by raising the 100th Anniversar y Flag. The event will take place rain or shine and in the event of inclement weather, the Ford hangar will be available. Visitors are advised to bring lawn chairs. The Veteran’s Day ceremony at 2 p.m. will honor those who served or are now serving in our Nation’s Armed Forces both in peacetime and in time of war by recognizing our country’s True Heroes-America’s veterans! The Lansing Memor ia l is located at t he L a nsi ng Mu n icipa l A i r por t, cor ner Bu r n ha m Avenue and Glenwood Lansing Road. For information call Rich at 708-862-7731. *** EMERY MOOR EHE A D TO GUEST AT TOR R ENCE L IQUORS : T hu r sday November 9t h f rom 6 to 8 p.m. t he former football star will be on hand to talk football and sign autographs. In 1986 he became a Realtor and sold real estate on the North Shore until just this year. Moorehead is also an Eagle Scout (1969) and has served on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Council of Boy scouts since 1989. Emery and his son Aaron are the NFL’s first father-and-son team to have played in and won Super Bowls. Torrence Liquors is on Torrence Avenue in Calumet City. *** CALUMET CITY CHAMBER TO HOST OCTOBER LU NCHEON MEET ING : Set for Wednesday October 25, 2017, at the Calumet City Public Library, 660 Ma n istee, Ca lu met Cit y, sta r t i ng at 11: 30 to 1: 00. Guest spea ker w i l l be Mary E. Tyler, Thornton Township’s 55 Alive instructor. Mary, 83 is a long time volunteer with the Township and teaches classes at the Senior Center on Huntington Drive in Calumet City every month of the year save for December (Christmas) and February (Mardi Gras). She will be dispensing her common sense approach to driving for the Chamber members and their guests. The luncheon will be catered by Mr. Submarine of Calumet City. Tab is $15 for members and $18 non-members. For reservations contact Chris Martin, 708-862-3737. *** KEN TEASE SENDS HIS REGARDS TO FRIENDS IN CALUMET CITY: Longtime Calumet City Businessman Ken Tease, of Harold Tease and Son, moved to Las Vegas, Nevada 3 years ago with wife Patsy. And even though he moved to Vegas, his heart is still in Calumet City as evidenced by his many calls and letters to friends still here. He send a letter to N 2 N recently asking us to remember his friends from the Calumet Cit y Chamber who were i n st r u ment a l i n keepi ng t hat g reat institution alive and well during the many years since his father helped co-found it in the 1930’s. Ken was the Executive Director of the Chamber for many years and together with wife Patsy, brought about some of the most memorable society events in Calumet City. Ken, though up in age, is far from retired however. He is a member of the Las Vegas musician union and plays keyboards at such venues as the Stratosphere and Aliante in glitter gulch. Most recently however, his thoughts and prayers (as were are ours) were focused on the aftermath of Sunday October 1st. In respect for the victims, all the bright lights in Las Vegas were turned off for 11 minutes at 10 pm on Sunday October 8th, 2017. The city of lights went completely dark for 11 minutes--in remembrance of the victims and their families. This past week, some” $10 million was raised by the casinos and individuals in just 24 hours and all donated to the victims and their families with NO administrative fees!” Ken explained. “with more to come.” More on the former movers and shakers of the Calumet City Chamber to come.
