Fire Prevention Tips for the Home October is Fire Prevention Month, and as the temperatures drop, households across the country will use electric heaters, fireplaces, and wood stoves to ward off the cold. According to Western National Insurance, supplemental heating sources such as space heaters are among the leading causes of home fires during the winter months. More than 60% of house fires can be prevented using care and caution. When it comes to fire safety, the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) suggests that homeowners have a plan of escape by drawing a map of the home, using two exits for each room. Fire drills are good to have at least twice a year. NFPA advises that a fire drill should be held during the day and one at night, using different ways out of the house. Teaching children how to escape a house fire is critical. “If there is a fire in the home and you can’t get to your children, teach them where the family should meet up. They should never go next door because the next door neighbor’s home is not a place of safety. Fire can easily spread next door, so, it is important that everyone knows where to go,” said a Chicago fighter. Shut all doors to stop the spread of fire and smoke. If the house is on fire, do not go back to the house to search for anything or anyone; simply call for help. In 2016, according to the NFPA, there were a total of 2,290 house fire deaths in the United States and more than 14,650 fire injuries occurred. Smoke detectors should be used to alert occupants that spoke is present. Place smoke detectors within 15 feet of every bedroom. Kidde and First Alert are popular smoke detector brands and are easily affordable. Check smoke detectors once a month. Smoke detector batteries should be replaced twice a year around daylight savings time. Extinguish candles before bedtime. Scented candles and plugins are a common décor in the home. Be sure and turn off plugins to avoid oil from overheating. A fire escape ladder is used for two-story homes to escape a fire. When attached to a window, the ladder will drop 25 feet. Homeowners can purchase ladders at Menards, Loews and Home Depot. Fireplace safety is important. Fireplaces provide a warm, cozy atmosphere in the home. The Western National Insurance Group offers the following tips for using them safely. • Keep flammable materials away from hearth and mantel. • Use a sturdy screen to keep sparks from flying. • Make sure the fireplace is cold before going to bed. • Inside a fireplace, a closed damper with hot ashes causes carbon monoxide to occur and as a result the fire will reheat. • Clean chimneys to avoid creosote build-up. Space heater fires can be avoided by keeping clothing and draperies away from the heater. Also, check to make sure heater is away from wall. Always allow adequate space for heaters. Fire extinguishers should be kept in the home to combat grease and other fires. Never put water on a grease fire. Grease fires are very dangerous and costly. An ABC multi-purpose fire extinguisher should be installed to put out ordinary combustible fires, flammable liquids fires, and electrical fires. Every home should have a fire extinguisher mounted 36 inches from the floor on each level of the home.

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli and the Board of Trustees along with Thornton Fractional School District 215 present the Pink Out Football and Volleyball events. The games featured a Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign featuring Thornton Fractional North High School, 755 Pulaski Road, Calumet City, IL. “We understand how important of an issue this is not only in October but all year around,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr., communication manager for Thornton Township. “And we wanted to get the community involved in making sure we keep this topic in the front of our minds.” Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. About one in
8 or (12%) of women in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. This year alone, about 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and about 40,450 women will die from breast cancer, per the American Cancer Society. It was the second year Thornton Township teamed up with a school district last year working with School District 205. “Football and volleyball players and coaches will participate by wearing pink paraphernalia like shoes, arm bands and socks. Students who wore pink got into the game free. We definitely want to continue to bring awareness. We had a moment of reflection prior to the National Anthem for anyone who has loss a love one to breast cancer, know someone who is currently battling it, or
survived it.” Breast cancer starts when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control. These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an X-ray or felt as a lump. After increasing for more than 20 years, breast cancer incidence rates in women began decreasing in 2000. But in recent years while incidence rates have been stable in white women, they have increased slightly in African American women. Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death in women with only lung cancer kills more women each year. “It’s very important to spread breast cancer awareness because it is a disease taking loved ones away and causing people to suffer,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township Supervisor.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Absorption Rate MIKE BUDER What is absorption rate and why is it important? The simplest definition of absorption rate is the rate at which properties are sold in a given area. For example, there are currently 208 single-family homes for sale in Lansing, Illinois. During the month of September (the most recent month of closed data), 36 homes closed in Lansing. If you take the current inventory of 208 homes and divide that by last month’s closed sales (207/36), you get 5.75 months. That means if the current inventory stayed the same and the rate of closed sales remained the same, it would take 5.75 months to deplete or sell the existing homes. A normal market would be considered between 5-6 months of inventory. If there is 1-4 months of inventory, it is considered a seller’s market. If there is more than 7 months of inventory, then it is considered a buyer’s market. Keep in mind that absorption rate is constantly changing as new homes come on the market and existing homes sell. Why is it important to know the absorption rate? If you are looking for a quick sale, the absorption rate will help you determine where you should price the home.
Genous Plumbing & Rodding Electric rodding done for as low as $15. Full service plumbing. Credit cards accepted. Call 708891-9488, 708-268-0693
For example, say you are thinking about pricing your home at $130,000 and you calculate the absorption rate for homes priced between $130,000$140,000 was 14.3 months. But homes priced between $120,000-$130,000 had an absorption rate of 5.3 months. If you were looking for a quick sale, you might price under $129,000. However, if you weren’t in a hurry and were prepared to wait, you might price over $130,000. Absorption rate is an important indicator of what is going on in your market and should not be overlooked. Keep in mind the absorption rate can and will vary from city to city, neighborhood to neighborhood and even from one price range to another. If you are looking to sell a home, feel free to contact me for the most recent absorption rate to aid you in the sale of your home. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. to the Word of God. I cannot and will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. I cannot do otherwise. Here I stand. God help me. Amen.”1 Luther’s appeal to conscience shaped our culture’s convictions about ‘freedom of conscience’. For Luther, ‘freedom of conscience’ was not freedom to do anything we want. It was freedom to do what God wants, no matter what the world’s power-brokers say. No human has the right to coerce another’s conscience, to force another to disobey God. This conviction, along with the confidence that God loved him, gave Luther courage in the face of fearsome forces. Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church of South Holland
500 years ago, a German monk sent a letter to a prominent archbishop. He wrote to alert him to spiritual abuses in the church. The letter included 95 statements that challenged these abuses. Martin Luther also posted his 95 statements on the community bulletin board – the church door. His intention: to invite other religious scholars to debate these statements, leading to reform. Little did he know that his ideas would soon ‘go viral’, thanks to the invention of the printing press. Printers reproduced and sent his writings far and wide, thrusting him into the spotlight, and forcing him to defend his convictions before powerful church leaders, determined to silence him. Luther’s continued study of Scripture drove him to conclude that many church teachings and practices undermined Scripture. The emperor summoned him to stand trial. Before powerful state and church leaders who could execute him, Luther said, “I am bound to the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive Ladies gently used dress 3/4 Relativity Houndstooth & swing coat, asking $25. 708329-9738 Two no sleeve dresses, 3/4 length, designer, size 9/10. 708-329-9738 Never worn Eva’s Bridal dress, size 9/10, paid $600, asking $75 firm. WOODROW WILCOX If a medical service or device is not covered by Medicare, neither Medicare nor a Medicare supplement insurance company will pay on a claim. The bill – all of it – belongs to the senior citizen. I don’t do miracles. I don’t have a magic wand. I work hard to protect our clients from mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. I do that job very well. As of last fall (2016), I have saved clients of this agency over two million dollars. I have a good record of finding and fixing mistakes or fraud in medical billing. But, I can’t change a government policy. Only elected politicians and bureaucrats can do that. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.
On October 10, 2017, I received an inquiry from a client in Michigan City. He wanted to know why he got a bill for $228 when the original amount of the bill was $354. I reviewed the papers and phoned the client’s insurance company at the same time. What was the problem? Medicare refused to cover a vaccination for the senior citizen client. So, a government policy prevented coverage of that medical service. The insurance company had nothing to do with that decision. Medicare supplement policies pay only when Medicare approves the medical service. Medicare supplement insurance companies do not use their own claims adjusters to review the merits of a medical service or device. They rely entirely on Medicare claims representatives. Whether a claim is or is not covered by Medicare, the insurance company never argues about it.

A young deer near Grand Rapids Michigan will be celebrating Halloween differently next year I would venture to guess. First, a little history for those of you who did not grow up in a Dutch Reformed community: The Dutch Reformed tradition of years past frowned upon Halloween. Our parents taught us that witches, ghosts and goblins were not a healthy thing to be celebrating. Halloween origins are traced back to the Celts centuries ago. The Celts believed that in the season between fall and winter, the veil between this life and the next was at its smallest. They feared that evil spirits could come back into this world in the form of animals to get back at them for their misdeeds. So they got a group of their neighbor’s together, dressed in scary costumes and lit fires to keep the spirits away. I guess that one bright guy decided that since they were all getting together anyway, someone should bring food. No one volunteered, so they all decided to bring a hot dish—and the potluck was born. (Now the potluck is a tradition that’s still going strong in these parts, but that a story for another day.) So it turns out that some of the Celts were sneaking into the potluck to partake of all the good food, but they didn’t bring a ‘dish’. So next year the organizers of the potluck went house to house to gather food items instead of trusting everyone to bring something. That’s where the trick or treating tradition started. (A good potluck is built on trust—it just won’t last long if too many moochers show up.) Our Dutch ancestors did not want any part of those traditions and so Halloween was not celebrated in the Dutch Reformed circles. In their eyes, the only benefit of Halloween was that the candy was free. Even that did not convince our parents to allow us to go trick or treating. Besides all that candy would rot our teeth. It just so happens that Reformation Day is on the same day as Halloween. Reformation Day is a day that is celebrated by most of the Protestant churches in this country. Back in 1517 Martin Luther nailed 95 statements onto a church door in Wittenberg Germany. These statements were the catalyst of The Reformation. While it made a large impact on the political, economic, social, and artistic aspects of life in those days, the Reformation was at its heart a religious movement. The Reformation was the great rediscovery of the good news of salvation by grace through faith for Christ’s sake. Since Halloween and Reformation Day happened on the same day, it was even more unlikely that little Dutch kids would be going trick or treating on October 31. Anyway, back to the story. This past Reformation Day/ Halloween, a young deer in Grand Rapids did not listen to his parents. He went trick or treating anyway. He must have been using a plastic pumpkin for all his candy. How do we know this? Because he was spotted running through the forest with the pumpkin stuck on his head. Since deer do not have fingers he must have stuck his head into the pumpkin and the black plastic carry handle slipped over his horns. He was spotted numerous times by local residents, and one called the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. They never got close enough to tranquilize the deer to remove the pumpkin. He ran around for a week with the pumpkin on his head before he was able to wiggle out of it last weekend. He is a very lucky deer, since next weekend, hunting season starts in Michigan. A local hunter was quoted, “He will be pretty easy to spot, jumping through the woods with an orange pumpkin on his head.” Next October 31, this young deer will be one year older and hopefully one year wiser. He may just have a family of his own. I can picture him telling his young buck, “Son, you shouldn’t go trick or treating. Get a cup of hot cider, come over by the fire and I’ll tell you a story about my last Halloween adventure with a plastic pumpkin.” Happy Reformation Day Everyone! Trick or Treat: Is Your Homeowners Policy Ready for Halloween? The most frightening thing about Halloween may not the costumed witches, vampires and goblins creeping along your neighborhood streets. Much more scary is the possibility of a mishap occurring on your property. Does tripping on costumes or decorations come to mind? They should. Halloween accidents can cause big scares and drained pockets for unprotected homeowners. According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), with adequate insurance you should be covered in the event of a mishap. The following shows how your policy may kick in to cover you—but review your specific homeowners insurance policy to be sure, or consult with your insurance agent. Even the most nimble ghoul might get hurt on your property. Costumes that restrict vision and low light can create a dangerous mix. Fog machines, props and decorations can become hazards if a child is poked, snagged, tripped, or runs or falls into something. Injuries to trick-or-treaters or your party guests would typically be covered by the homeowner liability portion of your policy. Under these circumstances, the injured trick-or-treater or guest would file a claim with your insurer. Be
potential Halloween tragedy altogether, keep pets locked in a separate room or cage while trick-or-treaters are visiting. Horror of horrors, what if someone kicks over a jacko’-lantern and your home catches fire? With an adequate homeowners policy, you would likely be covered. And if your home is deemed unlivable because of the damages, your policy may even cover your living expenses while your home is repaired. While we’re on the subject, remember to keep your candles and matches out of reach from small children. No need to temp curious kids. Disaster doesn’t always strike at home. What if you crash your car while avoiding a trick-or-treater? This type of accident would typically be covered by auto insurance under the collision portion—if you have it. If you hurt anyone, the liability portion of your auto insurance would potentially cover the cost of their treatment. It’s better to be safe than sorry! Refreshing your knowledge on where your insurance coverage kicks in or falls short could be beneficial in the event of an accident. Here’s to hoping your Halloween is full of treats, not tricks.
proactive: to prevent accidents, keep your porch lit and your walkways free from decorations and debris that could cause trick-or-treaters and guests to trip and fall. Are neighborhood kids “egging you on? Vandalism spikes around Halloween each year. If the damages cost more than your deductible, your home or possessions could be financially protected. If vandals damage your car in the process, you could be covered under the optional comprehensive portion of your auto insurance policy. Even the friendliest dog may not like mummies. What if your dog bites a trick-or-treater? Groups of kids, especially masked ones at your doorstep, could very well frighten your dog. According to the III, dog bites and other dog-related injuries accounted for more than one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claim dollars paid out in 2016, costing more than $600 million. While rules vary per state, homeowners insurance policies typically cover the liability and medical expenses related to an accident in your home. However, keep in mind insurance may be revoked for some dog breeds, or if owners know their dog has a tendency to bite. Avoid this

Does Market Volatility Scare You? BOB KRYGSHELD Halloween is almost upon us. Soon you may see a parade of monsters and other frightening individuals stopping by, exercising their right to demand candy. Fortunately, their appearance will be unlikely to cause you unpleasant dreams. But some people seem to have real fears about other things—such as what may happen in the financial markets. One way to keep those fears at bay is to avoid certain impulsive moves, such as the following: • Avoid ducking out of the market. Consider this: In March 2007, the Dow Jones Industrial Average stood at about 12,275 points. Exactly two years later, in the immediate aftermath of the financial crisis, the Dow had fallen to about 6,500—a drop of 47% and the Dow’s lowest point in 12 years. By that time, a lot of people had gone to the investment sidelines. So, what did they miss? Depending on how long they stayed out of the market, they may have missed some, or perhaps most, of one of the longest and strongest bull markets in history, because, just eight years later, the Dow had soared to almost 21,000, a gain of 223%. Of course, investing does involve the risk of losing principal, and there is no guarantee the market will perform as it has in the past. However, it’s fair to say that if you duck out of the market during its lower points, you might not benefit from the gains that may follow. • Avoid chasing “hot” stocks. By the time you hear about a supposedly “hot” stock, it may already be cooling off. Also, how trustworthy is the source? Does this tip come from an unbiased, knowledgeable individual? stock is appropriate for your needs, goals and risk tolerance. If not, it’s not so hot. • Avoid taking on too much—or too little—risk. If you feel the need to push your portfolio toward the maximum possible returns, you might invest too aggressively and take on too much risk. Conversely, if you are determined to avoid any amount of loss, at any time, you might invest so conservatively that your portfolio won’t grow enough to help you achieve your long-term goals. You need to strike a balance between risk and reward that is appropriate for you, and you need to make investment choices suitable for your individual risk tolerance. • Avoid owning too many of the same investments. If you own a lot of one particular financial asset and a market downturn affects that asset class strongly, your portfolio could suffer. But if you spread your investment dollars among domestic and international stocks, bonds, U.S. Treasury securities, certificates of deposit (CDs), and so on, you may not be as susceptible to a downturn, because different types of investments often perform differently at any given time. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can help reduce the effects of market volatility, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) No matter what you do, you can’t take all the uncertainty out of investing. But by understanding market volatility and the composition of your portfolio, you can invest with more confidence. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Have you ever shown a house you thought was haunted? Answer: There was one showing that I recall with dread & discomfort; a showing where home features ceased to be a concern, where routine was overshadowed by fear, where disclosures were eclipsed by an enormous desire to flee the premises. It just so happened that this showing occurred on the eve of Halloween. My clients were rehabbers looking for their next investment. The house was an old neglected 2 story Victorian in the country, with leaning fences & dense vines engulfing the walls, windows & roof. I learned that the property was an estate & that it had been the subject of headlines when the owner was found hanging from the rafters of the Foyer. The Police investigation had not determined whether the death was from suicide or foul play. I arrived ahead of the buyers and decided I should turn on some lights in preparation of their viewing. As I pushed open the big, creaky door & entered, I noticed the silhouette of a noosed rope, still attached to a high dusty beam. A foul odor of decay permeated the stagnant air, and I recall reading that the man spent many days at the end of the rope before neighbors found him. My heart was pounding. I remember how hard it was to move from room to room looking for a switch that would take me out of the darkness. A steep staircase descended into the basement, where I

know my clients would want to check the structural components. As I entered the basement, I could not locate the light switch. All I had was the weakening light from my flashlight. I then heard a sound coming from upstairs. At first, it blended with the incessant creaking of the structure, but now the difference was unmistakable. It was the slow and steady cadence of footsteps. Hoping to hear the voice of my clients, I called out. “Hello, is someone upstairs?” No one answered, but the footsteps continued. I called out again, but there was no answer. Then a shadow appeared on the stair and moved slowly & silently downward. A dark form started to take shape. As it reached the basement floor a putrid foulness filled the air, so that breathing became forced and repugnant. My attention was drawn from this to some shadowy object that dangled from its left hand. But then, the eyes of its disjointed head found me, the lips formed a sardonic grin, dripping with thick gray saliva. The light of the waxing Moon gave me a quick glimpse of what could be the ghost of the old man, hung by the rafters. Its left hand extended towards me and the acrid smell of cold breath filled my face as it cried out, ”Trick or Treat!” Thinking of Selling? Call Cathy & Jim Higgins. She tripped on a step a nd dow n she went. A word to the w ise— if getting from the car to your kitchen counter top is too much to handle in one trip, take it slow and use smaller bags and get the groceries in a few at a time. Much better than the bumps and bruises from a nasty fall. Fran is also still getting used to life without her dear husband Chuck who passed away earlier this year. Chuck was active in the Lansing Honor Guard and other military and Veteran’s organizations and was the booking agent for Kacy’s Hall (Knights of Columbus) in Lansing. Chuck regularly brought in the likes of Elvis Tribute bands and Rod Stewart impressionists. Get Well Fran!

Among them are Aunt Sally’s (in Calumet City on Burnham Avenue)owner Denny Sidkey and wait-staffer Samantha Sam Johnson, pictured here in their Cubs T shirts. Denny noted that even when they don’t w in the series, the “Cubs will always be our favorite team—and in our hearts!” ***
