Crime scene tape. Blood spatter analysis. Flashing lights. Fingerprints. Crime scene and forensic investigation is not for the faint of heart, but for one Bishop Noll junior, it is where she feels the most comfortable. For Alexis Carrasco, of Hammond, forensic studies have always held her interest and given way to keen insight for her future pathway. Carrasco got a little taste of what she hopes to be her career this past summer in Washington, D.C., at the National Student Leadership Conference, which was sponsored by American University. Along with offering dynamic and innovative ways for correspondents to engage with the justice system, Carrasco was offered a few exclusive privileges,
_______________________________ including obtaining one transferable college credit. At the conference, Carrasco sat in several forensic science classes and prepared testimonies for crime scenes. “We were divided into groups and assigned different crime scenes, in which we had to find the culprit and used various tactics to help prove our case. Then we prepared testimonies to use in ‘court,’ where our suspect was either found guilty or not guilty,” she said. Carrasco was also able to explore D.C. in her free time, where she visited the International Spy Museum, the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), Georgetown University, the Holocaust Museum, the Lincoln Memorial,
Jefferson Memorial, and the Roosevelt Memorial. She also listened to guest speakers who gave the students backgrounds on their careers and decisions to pursue a field in forensics. Carrasco stated that the impact of the conference is one that will stay with her. “It gave me direction in my career path after high school and college, as well as giving me an idea as to what to major in when I get to college,” she said. “I want to go into the forensic science field in college and I’ll either major in forensic science, criminology, of criminal justice. Then I want to also receive a minor in psychology. As of right now my hope is to get into Grand Canyon University and attend there, but I am looking at Ball State as well.”

Financial Advice Column
Checklist for Helping Choose a Financial Professional BOB KRYGSHELD October 30 was Checklist Day and the value of checklists is clear: they help us organize our time and break large jobs into manageable steps. You can use a checklist for just about any significant endeavor—including the task of choosing a financial professional to help you achieve your important goals. Here’s what such a checklist might look like: Find someone ... __with the proper credentials. Make sure a prospective financial professional has the appropriate securities registrations. __who has worked with people like you. Seek out a professional who has experience working with people in circumstances similar to yours—that is, people of your financial status and with essentially the same goals and attitudes toward investing. __who will communicate with you regularly. During the course of your relationship with a financial professional, you will have many questions: Are my investments performing as they should? Should I change my investment mix? Am I still on track to meet my long-term goals? Plus, you will have changes in your life—new children, new jobs, new activities—that will affect your financial picture and that need to be communicated. Consequently, you need to be sure that whomever you work with is easy to reach and will be in regular contact with you. Many financial professionals meet with their clients at least once a year to discuss the clients’ portfolios and recommend changes, as needed, and also make themselves available for any questions or concerns their clients may have. __who will honor your preferences. Some financial professionals follow certain philosophies. For

example, you might find one advisor who tends to favor aggressive investing, while another one might be more conservative. There’s nothing wrong with either approach, but you’ll want to be sure that your preferences take precedence in all recommendations and guidance you receive. Many professionals won’t express any of their own preferences at all, but will instead follow a course of action based on your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. __connected to other professionals. Your investment plans don’t exist in a vacuum. Over time, you will likely need to integrate elements of your investment strategy with your tax and estate planning strategies. When this happens, you may find it advantageous to have a financial professional who can work with tax and legal professionals to help you meet all your needs in these areas. __whose compensation structure is acceptable to you. Financial professionals get paid in different ways—through fees, commissions or a combination of both. Which method is best for you, as an investor? There’s no one “right” answer— but you will certainly want to understand exactly how your financial professional will get paid and how this pay structure will affect your interactions with him or her. Take your time and make sure you’re confident about your ultimate choice. After all, you’re hiring someone to help you reach your key goals, such as a comfortable retirement, so you’ll want to get the right person on your side. SOLVE THE MAZE

On October 12, 2017, I researched a medical bill problem for a senior citizen from Gary, Indiana. The bill was from a hospital in Texas for $1,525. Our client went to Texas to visit his son. He needed medical services while on the visit. The bill was from a collection firm on behalf of the hospital. In my research of the bill, I learned that neither the insurance company nor Medicare ever got a claim from the hospital for services to our client. A hospital that is contracted with Medicare must file the claim of a senior on Medicare with Medicare FIRST. Only after Medicare reviewed and ruled on the claim can a Junemedical 20, 2012service provider then bill the patient for the balance. That was not done in this case and I caught it. To help our client, I sent a letter to the collection firm and informed them that the bill was bad because its client, the hospital, had not complied with Medicare rules. I recited the evidence that I had to prove

Start your week off right and go dressed to work-out! Franciscan Health Fitness Centers will host their annual Fall Open Houses on Monday, November 6th from 9:00am to 8:00pm with high hopes that guests will join in the fun. Both the Chesterton and Schererville locations will be offering free tours of the State-of-the-Art- Facilities, with raffles and prizes worth over $1500. As always, refreshments and healthy snacks will be provided. This is Franciscan Health Fitness Centers’ third weekday Open House and they are hoping that guests will come with a “jump in and try it” attitude. Both members and guests will be able to try a 9am Cycling class in the recently renovated Cycling Studios. The class incorporates MyZone Physical Activity Belts that give you instant feedback on your workout. Unlike other activity trackers that only count steps and estimate calories burned, the MyZone belt monitors your heart rate in real time to determine effort exerted during exercise. A limited number of belts will be available for demo use during the Open Houses and are for sale in both clubs at a discounted rate. The aqua exercise classes at 9am and 6pm will be hosted in the Recreational Pools. Both Chesterton’s and Schererville’s pools are now using the SaltPure system, a natural sanitizing system utilizing ordinary table salt. ANNA M. CAISON There’s another interesting and profound aspect to God that is often overlooked. Luke 9:51-55 illustrates an example of this forgotten side of the Lord. Jesus is in route to Jerusalem where He will be arrested, tried, and crucified. His travel to Jerusalem will take Him through a Samaritan Village. He sends at least 2 of His disciples ahead of him to secure lodging for the night. However, the Samaritans refuse to service Jesus and His followers. (Jews and Samaritans shared a hatred for each other that stemmed from a history of religious and cultural differences) In anger James and John suggest they call down fire from heaven and destroy the entire Samaritan village. Jesus rebukes them and reiterates His mission: “The Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” When our zeal in proclaiming and upholding the truth of God’s Word causes us to become bias and hateful (refusing medical treatment and other services) toward people who do not share our Christian beliefs, we have stepped outside of Christ’s command that His followers

emulate His love for all of humanity (John 3:16-17; Gal. 6:10). God allows us to choose whom we will follow. Christ, Buddha, Muhammad, Self, etc., it’s our choice! Individuals who choose not to follow Christ, God doesn’t blast them off the face of the earth or sends a lightning bolt to strike them dead. He allows them all the days of their life on the earth the opportunity to learn of Him and come to Him. In fact, scripture says God patiently delays His return to judge the world to give man ample time to change his heart and be saved (2 Peter 3:9). We join God in His desire toward lost humanity when we demonstrate His love through acts of kindness, respect, and service to people whose religious and cultural beliefs are different from ours. Who knows, our act of kindness and respect to one who does not share our beliefs, may be a leading factor in drawing him or her to faith in Christ. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: What is the difference between a home warranty and homeowner’s insurance? Answer: The best way to describe homeowner’s insurance and a home warranty is to compare them to a car purchase. When purchasing a car, you are required to have insurance on the vehicle. This protects you financially if anything were to happen to the car. The same thing is true with home insurance. If your home experienced damage that is covered by the insurance company (for example a fire), you would be compensated by the insurance company. A home warranty, on the other hand, provides a guarantee for certain parts of the home, depending on the home warranty policy you purchase. When you buy a vehicle with a warranty, the car manufacturer is guaranteeing that certain parts of the vehicle will not break while the vehicle is under warranty. If a

part does break while under warranty, the car manufacturer will have the problem fixed at no charge to you. The same is true of a home warranty. The home warranty company will pay to fix anything that is covered by the warranty (for example the furnace). Once the home warranty expires, usually after a year, most homeowners do not renew. This makes sense because you are familiar with your home, and you probably have set aside funds for home maintenance. Keep in mind that home warranties do not pay for everything. You have to check the policy. Homeowner’s insurance and a home warranty may sound very similar, but they are two very different products. Insurance protects the buyer from a catastrophic loss. A warranty protects specific aspects of a home. You never hope to need either, but are thankful for the protection they provide.

ARLO KALLEMEYN On Saturday, November 11 we pause to remember the dedication and sacrifice of the many veterans in the United States. I came across this the other day and it reminded me that honoring our veterans should not be limited to one or two days each year. It is the VETERAN, not the reporter who has given us freedom of the press. It is the VETERAN, not the preacher who has given us freedom of religion. It is the VETERAN, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech. It is the VETERAN, not the protester who has given us freedom to assemble. It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote. It is the VETERAN who salutes the Flag. It is the VETERAN who serves under the Flag. Please remember to honor our veterans and be proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve. Sincerely, Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of not taking freedom for granted.

Little League Football Organization Teaches Life Skills
MIKE BUDER So says Mr. Know-It-All. You know the one. I have been in this business long enough to have met my share of them: the uncle’s sister’s husband’s son who is the not-so-silent partner in my business relationship with my buyer or seller. This person is offering advice of the worst kind, but I have no choice but to play it cool, because my client greatly respects this “advisor”—who’s either never bought or sold a doghouse before, or bought and sold when people “shook on it,” or bought and sold when it was the exact opposite type of market my client is currently buying/ selling in. Now, I love buyers and sellers that do their homework. Yes, of course ask questions, talk to others who have bought or sold in the same type of economy or market you are in. Ask me questions, and test what I’m saying against facts—I welcome it. An informed client is the best client. But please, filter out the advice of the well-meaning relative/neighbor/ coworker/pen pal/advisor that’s coaching you from the sideline—the bench warmer who doesn’t know Jack or Jill when it comes to buying or selling in this type of real estate market. Also, please don’t tell me how some stock market expert on TV, who’s not a Realtor and doesn’t live in this community, said buying/selling real estate right now is a bad idea. Sweeping generalizations don’t apply to the whole nation, much less the

whole state or even the whole county. When making a huge financial investment decision such as buying or selling real estate, as a buyer or seller, stop and think who is really the most qualified and best equipped to help you in the decision making process: • An informed, licensed professional who knows and understands the market you are buying and selling in. • An informed, licensed professional that has experience working with the intricacies of a real estate transaction like the one you’ll most likely be entering into. • A licensed professional experienced in negotiating on a client’s behalf in a real estate transaction. • A person who wants the best for you and to see you happy with the outcome for many years to come. Some friends, relatives, or coworkers might, perhaps, be able to check one of the aforementioned. However, when working with a good Realtor you can check off all four — with that fourth statement being their primary goal. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@ remax.net, Website: w w w. The South Holland Jets football team and cheerleaders learn life skills as they gain athletic skills. Under strict academic rules, members must maintains an A-B grade point average. ________________________________________________
Until two years ago, Sharhonda Ashmon-Neil of Tinley Park knew very little about the South Holland Jets Football and Cheer organization. Although her husband wanted their son Gavin on the team, Neil didn’t exactly feel comfortable with Gavin playing little league football, until she got all the facts. She says after talking to Gavin’s coaches and signing him on the team, everything worked out just fine. “At first, I didn’t want my son to play football because I thought it was too much of a contact sport along with all the other stuff parents worry about with their children. My husband encouraged me to get in touch with and familiarize myself with Gavin’s coaches. What I liked about the South Holland Jets coaching team is that they don’t train the kids to win, they pretty much train them for the fundamentals of playing football, so that was important to me,” Neil says. Tiffany Coles, Cheerleader Coordinator, commented about the program. “From a cheerleading standpoint, the program builds cheerleaders’ self-esteem and confidence,” she says. “And it allows them to interact with their peers. They

have a support group outside of just mom and dad. They learn that cheering is just more than a sport, they learn to be well-rounded individuals.” Under strict academic rules, members must maintains an A-B grade point average. Watson says, “We started a program some years ago called the Jets Scholars. It is a way of rewarding academic achievement for our studentathletes. We only accept A’s and B’s. The reason we don’t allow C’s is because the definition of C is average.” John Watson, Director of Public Relations for the South Holland Jets, agrees. “Our focus is to teach life lessons through football and cheer, and if we win by doing that, then we’ve done our job. We’re not the organization that is going to do whatever it takes to win. Our values are consistent. We are not a winat-all-costs organization.” The South Holland Jets football organization is part of the Will-CookKankakee Youth Association. For more than 45 years, this little league football and cheer organization has urged members to be all they can be. Former Jets include honor roll students with A-B grade point averages, and highly
paid NFL players like Tracey Wilson and Landon Cox. Says Watson, “Tracey went with the New York Jets and later the Tennessee Titans. Landon signed up with the Cincinnati Bengals. I remember Tracey and Landon telling me, ‘All we talk about is the South Holland Jets. We argue with our friends about the years we played for the Jets. Mostly, when we talk about football we talk about the South Holland Jets,’” Watson said. Watson says there are two rounds of playoffs and then the Super Bowl. The Jets have been hosting the Super Bowl since 1991, and have played in every Super Bowl except four. Watson who has been with the Jets sports program for more than 18 years says students come back later to support them. “My son is 27, and he comes back to participate in the program. The program means a lot to former players. I feel I would be letting my son down if I did not participate.” A Jets banquet will be held December 2, at the Serbian Social Center Club 18550, Stony Island Ave. in Lansing. To learn more about the event, you may contact Mr. Malik Jones at 708-439-2275.

RICHARD ZEKVELD No. We learned this word early as children. And we weren’t afraid to use it. “Samuel, time to get ready for bed.” “No.” “Tamara, get your shoes on! We’re going!” “No!” Then we grew up. And some of us unlearned how to say no so effectively that we almost forgot how. We feel guilty when we say no. Its selfish and rude to say no… isn’t it? Besides, people will disapprove of us and think badly of us if we say no. So we say yes. And people praise us, approve of us, like us. But soon we feel trapped by their expectations. We feel like they take us for granted. Resentment sets in, sucking joy from service. Our yes no longer feels like a gift freely given, but something we owe. It’s true that our no can arise from a selfish heart. I say no to my kids at times because I don’t want to be bothered with the time and

effort that my yes will require. That’s selfish. But our yes can be just as selfish. Desire for approval or reward, fear of disapproval or punishment, even desperation to silence nagging, rather than love, can motivate our yes. Even if our yes isn’t selfish, it can arise from a misguided sense of guilt or duty. Either way, our yes leaves us trapped rather than free. Knowing God’s forgiveness, father-love and approval frees us to give our yes to God and others as a love-gift. It also frees us to say no when necessary. These principles may also help you say no when you need to: Sometimes yes will harm rather than help others… and us. Sometimes yes to one will mean no to another… maybe even God himself.
