Thornton Township employees at the annual Township Officials of Illinois Awards. _______________________________

Thornton Township was awarded two prestigious media awards at the annual Township Officials of Illinois honors. Thornton township won Best Illinois Township Website and Best Illinois Township Social Media. “Thornton Township underwent a complete website overall this year. The purpose was to create a more informative, interactive, and visually appealing site that would be useful to all our residents regardless of age,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr., community relations manager for Thornton Township. “We consider a website the front door to the township. When people want to know about your government body, the first thing they do is search your website. The expectation is that they should be able to find the information quickly and clearly.” “We have never won an award for our communications before and I am proud of our department that they are doing such great work to educate the community about our services,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township Supervisor. Features of the Township’s award-winning website, www. thorntontownship.com, include... • Department Pages: Created a detailed department site for each of the Township’s 11 departments: Assessor, Clerk, Community Relations, Food and General Assistance, Other Services, Senior Services Special Services, Transportation, Youth and Family Services, ZAP. Each page has a blue header that describes in a few short sentences the department’s goal, along with a photo of the head of the department and a phone number to reach them. It also has a short video of the department director explaining the highlights of the program. • Jobs Page: Even with the economy improving, many are still looking for work or are underemployed, so the Township felt it was important to also host a jobs page on the Website. Companies within or outside the township can submit requests to post jobs available to the community. Thornton Township wants to be a resource

for residents, whether in need of general assistance or not, acting as a one-stop shop for community needs. • Social Media: At the top of the webpage are social media icons that users can click and directly log on. To return to the homepage, users simply click on the Thornton Township icon. • Community Page: Thornton Township is committed to the principle of local government connecting to and supporting schools. Students are the future leaders and the website to highlights their achievements. A separate webpage focuses on each public high school within the township and features students doing incredible things. In addition to the website and social media awards, Super visor Zuccarelli received the Friends of the Youth Award for his diligent work of expanding services and programs for the youth and adult services department.

WOODROW WILCOX On October 30, 2017, I helped a client who now lives in Carmel, Indiana. The client had lived in northwest Indiana, but moved to Carmel a few years ago. The client got a bill for $1000.50 from a firm associated with a hospital in Indianapolis. His wife phoned and asked why they got the bill since her husband had bought a Medicare supplement policy through our insurance agency. I told her to send me a copy of the bill and I would check on it. I found the problem with the bill. The claim was filed incorrectly. Medicare supplement claims should be filed with Medicare and Medicare Advantage claims should be filed with the private insurance company. I talk about this in my public presentations. It is part of my discussion of things that can go wrong with Medicare related medical bill claims. There is no charge for one of our agents and me to give a presentation at a group lunch or meeting. Call our main number 219-7367800 if you would like us to present some important facts about Medicare

related insurance at your group’s meeting. I wrote a letter to the firm in Indianapolis to explain that someone at their firm had made a mistake. I noted the evidence of the mistake and asked them to do the right thing and file the claim correctly. That will eliminate the bill for over $1,000 for our client and his family. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service, maybe you should switch to an insurance agency that does.

is doing.” I started laughing as I began to understand what that statement meant. I didn’t think about my bills that needed to be paid. And, I didn’t think, “What if he’s conning me?” I didn’t judge his situation, or lecture him about doing better. A need was expressed to me and I responded to that need. I didn’t let my rational mind know what my agape mind was doing. What was Jesus’ purpose in feeding the five thousand? What was His purpose in interacting with the social outcasts? He did it that God would be revealed (glorified) as a God of love who values all people, and is concerned about our everyday struggles and crisis. Why does God call us to emulate Him in demonstrating love and concern for others? Because this is how He chooses to reveal Himself to those who don’t yet know Him. MIKE BUDER This week I was on a listing appointment and the client asked, “Should I wait until after the holidays to list my home”? I have also had some sellers in the past call and say “no more showings until after the holidays”. The holidays could be the best time of the year to have your home on the market! People who look for homes this time of the year are SERIOUS BUYERS and not just out there to wear down your carpets. Who else would take their time to come look at a home in this hectic time of year, A SERIOUS BUYER OF COURSE. And…what better time to let them see your home beautifully decorated for the holidays. Buyers are more emotional during the holidays and your cozy warm home can cause emotions in a buyer you can’t get other times of the year. Serious buyers also have fewer homes to choose from during the holiday season, which means less competition for you and possibly a higher offering price. Starting in January there will be more homes coming to the market every day. Keep in mind the increased supply heading into the spring market without an

equal increase in demand can cause prices to take a dip again. Buyers have more time to look for a home with time off work during the holidays and winter vacation breaks. People stay home more in colder weather and online searches go way up. Traditionally many people have job transfers at the end of the year and they need to find new homes and won’t be able to wait until spring to buy. Some people want to buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. If you are planning to purchase another home, by selling now you could be a non-contingent buyer in the spring when many more homes are available for possibly less money. Maybe you will be able to enjoy the rest of the season knowing you sold your house because you didn’t put off showing your home during the more hectic time of the year! GOD WITH US

Ever wondered about some of the puzzling statements Jesus said? Last week I was in the parking lot of the grocery store putting my groceries in the trunk of my car when a young man standing about 2 feet away called out to me. “Ma’am, I don’t mean to disturb you but could you give me some change so I can buy something to eat for me and my family?” I didn’t have any cash on me so I offered to go into the store with him and purchase for him what he needed. He was very appreciative, asking if it was okay to get certain items he thought cost too much. After we finished shopping we paused in the parking lot and I prayed for him and his family. In the store I had given him a business card with my work number to call me so I could connect him with our Male Involvement program for job assistance. When I got back in my car I said, “What just happen? Was that a smart thing to do?” Almost immediately one of Jesus’ puzzling statements played in my ear, “Don’t let your left hand know what the right hand

BOB KRYGSHELD It’s obviously important to be vigilant at any time, but you need to be even more on your toes during the holiday season, when fraudsters are particularly active. To help keep your important data under wraps during the holidays, consider these suggestions: • Extend your protection to all mobile devices. Identity thieves can now compromise your mobile devices by installing spyware that steals usernames, passwords and credit card information. Fortunately, you can fight back. By doing a little research online, you can find the best mobile security software for your needs. • Use multiple passwords. Online security specialists recommend that you use different passwords for each new online shopping site you visit during the holiday season. Although this might seem like a hassle, it can be helpful, because even if identity thieves were to grab one of your new passwords, they still couldn’t use it for other sites you may visit. And you can even find a free online program that can help you keep track of all your passwords. • Be suspicious of “huge savings.” It happens every holiday season – identity thieves develop fake sites with attractive graphics and stunningly low prices on a variety of items, especially digital devices. If you fall for these pitches, you won’t get any merchandise, but you might get a handful of headaches once the bad guys have your credit card number and other personal information. To prevent this, be wary of any deal that sounds too good to be true, and

do some digging on the websites that offer these mega-savings. • Watch for fake shipping notices. During the holidays, when you may do a lot of online shopping, you will probably receive some legitimate shipping notices. But the bad guys have gotten pretty good at generating fake notices designed to resemble those from UPS, FedEx and even the U.S. Postal Service. If you were to click on the link provided by one of these bogus notices, you could either take on some malware or get taken to a “phishing” website created by the shipping notice forgers. Your best defense: Only shop with legitimate merchants and only use the tracking numbers given to you in the email you received immediately after making your purchases. • Keep your Social Security number to yourself. As a general rule, don’t give out your Social Security number online — to anyone. No legitimate retailer needs this number. Finally, be aware that not all attempts at stealing your personal information will come online. When you’re out shopping at old-fashioned, brick-andmortar stores, consider bringing just one credit card with you — and protect that card from prying eyes. By following these precautions, you should be able to greatly reduce the risk of being victimized by identity thieves and other miscreants. And the more comfortable you are in doing your holiday shopping, the more you can enjoy the season. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Have you researched your family history? Did you uncover any stories? Were they stories of goodness and greatness? Scandal and shame? In his account of Jesus’ life, Matthew begins with Jesus’ family tree. Had he posted it on-line, he could have linked many names to stories – the stories of their lives. There we find stories of faith and failure, courage and cowardice, devotion and deception, kindness and killing, praise and prostitution, fidelity and fornication, integrity and injustice. The lives of Jesus’ ancestors often contain both the virtues and vices paired above. The Bible makes no attempt to clean up or cover up the sins, flaws and brokenness of its heroes. Abraham is the father of faith – and the man who routinely threw his wife under the bus (so to speak) to save his own skin. Rahab is a prostitute-turned-princess. Judah sells his brother into slavery, sleeps

It’s Our Famous

with his daughter-in-law, supposing she’s a prostitute, then pleads passionately with the ‘governor’ of Egypt to enslave him instead of his baby brother. David is the man after God’s heart who murders his friend after getting his wife pregnant. Ruth turns from her idols to identify with the one true God and his people, then goes on to live a life of self-giving, transforming love that alters the course of history. Together, these stories form a single story-line that weaves together man’s mess with God’s grace – a story line written by the sovereign God himself to move his plan of salvation forward… and to give us Jesus! After reading these stories, along with our own, we are ready for Jesus. He alone is history’s faithful, flawless hero. “You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21b). Richard Zekveld Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church

Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I had a verbal agreement for the purchase of a home. Both parties had filled in the real estate contract including purchase price and earnest money amounts. All we had to do was to get together again to SIGN the contract and give the earnest money. The seller called me tonight and said the deal was off. Didn’t we have a deal? Answer: Nope. In real estate, contracts must be in writing. There must be an “offer” and “acceptance” and there must be “consideration” such as a deposit. “Acceptance” in this case did not occur because there is no signature. In your case what you had was a friendly chat and a bunch of paper. What you heard may not have been what the seller heard. Without signatures on a piece of paper there is no way to know what was accepted and what was not. While the purchase price and the earnest

money are important, they are just a few of the items which a typical real estate agreement might cover. For instance, how was the title guaranteed, if at all? Who pays for the survey? Who will pay points at closing? What was the possession agreement? Do the appliances stay or go? The list goes on and on. For your benefit, and for the seller’s, the entire transaction must be committed to paper, otherwise you could wind up with costly debates for years to come. Tickets Await Holiday Shoppers Who Abuse Disability Parking Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced that Secretary of State Police will conduct statewide parking stings targeting individuals illegally parking in spaces reserved for persons with disabilities at shopping malls beginning Black Friday, November 24. Secretary of State Police will enforce the provisions of the Parking Program for Persons with Disabilities at shopping centers in Aurora, Bloomington, Carbondale, Chicago, Fairview Heights, Oak Brook, Orland Park, Peoria, Rockford, Schaumburg, and Springfield on November 24. holiday shopping season and one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Other enforcements will take place during the holiday season in Chicago, the suburbs and throughout the state. “Our mission is not to issue tickets, but to ensure that accessible parking spaces are available to those who need them,” White said. “Parking illegally in a space reserved for people with disabilities means a possible driver’s license suspension and a hefty fine, money which could otherwise be used on gifts. Remember, if you don’t belong there, don’t park there.”

placards and 51,416 disability license plates are registered in Illinois. Secretary White urges individuals to report abuse of parking spaces for people with disabilities by calling 217-785-0309. Callers should be prepared to report placard and license plate numbers as well the as the location of vehicles. People can also report abuse via the Secretary of State’s website at www.cyberdriveillinois.com and complete the Parking Program for Persons with Disabilities Abuse Complaint Form. In short, park legally and save your money for gifts, not fines.

Drivers caught misusing a placard face a six-month driver’s license suspension and a $600 fine. Repeat violators will face a one-year driver’s license suspension and a $750 fine for a second offense; for third or subsequent offenses, violators will face a $1,000 fine plus a one-year driver’s license revocation. The fine for parking in an accessible parking space without a disability placard or license plates can be up to $350 and using a deceased person’s placard or a fraudulent placard can result in a $2,500 fine and one-year revocation of a driver’s license. Currently, 627,281 permanent disability

Local Author Elvis Slaughter Releases Preschool to Prison Lansing author Elvis Slaughter, MSCJ, has released his new book Preschool to Prison, which offers excellent answers to questions and issues relating to risk factors and problem behavior in children and teenagers and effective handling of such situations. In this seminal work, Preschool to Prison, crime expert Elvis Slaughter aims at the genesis of crime in modern society. Having lived with career criminals during his experience at one of the largest penal systems in the nation, Slaughter raises a thought-provoking question: Is the journey to prison determined by the school, environment, or parent?

Contrary to popular belief, acting out is not the only cause for concern. Countless factors come together to create a criminal. Some factors are controllable, whereas others are not. Preschool to Prison explains factors leading children, teenagers, and adults to crime and offers research-based solutions that help deal with criminal behaviors. Written in an engaging tone, Slaughter aspires to help develop responsive solutions for society, where everyone, including parents, school administrators, and community members collaborate to raise responsible children. The best and most effective time to

Delinquency prevention efforts seek to redirect youth who are considered at-risk for delinquency or who committed a delinquent offense from deeper involvement in the juvenile justice system. As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The implication is to create enabling elements that influence the decision-making process during the various stages of a person’s development. Local Caterer/Restaurant Owner Still In Business After Thirty Years! I asked Jim, owner of Jimbooos, why he thinks his business has been such a success for so long? He jokingly replied, “LUCK and being very blessed!”, but then he quickly gave credit to his father and grandmother who urged him to “keep up with the service and quality of his business.” Along with the service and quality, I noticed that his prices are very reasonable. When I asked how they are able to keep the prices so low he said that the volume they produce is massive. If you have ever visited one of Jim’s restaurants you know it is not uncommon to see him sitting at his desk with more than one phone line going. “My job has evolved over the years into more of an administrative roll. I am the only one who books all the catering, with that being said I am so busy booking catering jobs all day that I don’t have time for much else.” When talking

to Jim I noticed how much he talked about his staff. “This is by far the best crew I’ve ever had! I have passed on all my recipes to my cooks who, if anything, have only improved the quality of our products.” It appears that the staff at Jimbooos is more than JUST staff; they work together more like a big family. As a long time customer, they make you feel right at home, as if you were also a part of the family. When I finally asked Jim if he ever thinks about retirement, he told me, “I absolutely love what I do. It is a thought that rarely ever comes to mind.” He jokingly went on to say, “Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to hit the Lotto and be able to retire.” I’ve grown up on Jimbooos food for as long as I can remember and I truly hope he is around for another thirty years so I can continue to enjoy it with my family.

Indiana Department of Revenue Announces National Tax Security Awareness Week The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR), in collaboration with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, will host a National Tax Security Awareness Week starting November 27 to encourage taxpayers to take additional steps in protecting their personal and financial information before the 2018 tax season. “National Tax Security Awareness Week offers DOR an opportunity to better educate our Hoosier taxpayers on how to protect themselves against cybercriminals,” said DOR Commissioner Adam Krupp. “As the holiday season brings exciting deals for shopping, it also brings the threat of online thieves seeking to trick customers into disclosing sensitive information—information that could be used to file a fraudulent tax return.” Starting next week, DOR will release helpful information each day for individuals and businesses to consider as they prepare for the upcoming tax season. But the holiday season isn’t the only time Indiana stands up to cybercriminals. Since 2014, Indiana has been one of the leading states in developing and implementing innovative ways to protect against identity theft and prevent fraud against Hoosier taxpayers. In 2016, more than $4.8 million in tax fraud was stopped through DOR’s Identity Protection Program. “DOR is leading the charge of tax security as one of the top agencies in the United States with over $100 million in fraud stopped since its inception in 2014,” said Commissioner Krupp. “DOR is making it extremely difficult for cybercriminals to attack Indiana’s taxpayers. As a result, we are seeing a gradual

decline in fraud attempts, saving Hoosiers millions of dollars.” Part of DOR’s Identity Protection Program is the Identity Confirmation Quiz, which asks selected customers a series of four questions. These questions are designed so only the customer would know the answers. The quiz is easy and convenient, and can be completed within minutes. A total of 184,957 individuals have taken and passed the quiz for the 2016 filing season. Whether or not customers receive a confirmation quiz, there are three key steps DOR urges customers to take ensure their information remains secure, including: • Learn to recognize fraud by avoiding phishing emails and ignore any threatening phone calls from thieves posing as your bank, credit card companies and government organizations. • Always use security software with firewall and anti-virus protections. Make sure the security software is always turned on and can automatically update. • Protect your personal data. Use strong, unique passwords for each online account. Don’t routinely carry your Social Security card, and make sure your tax records are secure. Treat your personal information like you do your cash; don’t leave it lying around. For additional information on how to protect against identity theft, visit the DOR website www.dor.in.gov/4794.htm or learn more about what to do if fallen victim to identify theft at www.in.gov/dor/5034.htm.

A Heart That Seeks PETE TASSIO One of the things which the Christmas story reminds us about is the importance of a person’s heart. The Scripture tells us that magi from the east came to Jerusalem seeking the King of the Jews. And when they asked Herod where the King was to be born, Herod inquired of the priests and scribes who immediately gave the answer; “In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written through the prophet...” We are also told that Herod and all of Jerusalem were troubled when they heard that the magi came to worship this new King. Other translations use the word “perturbed,” rather than troubled. Herod and all the Jews in Jerusalem were agitated and greatly upset by this news, instead of rejoicing in it. How sad that they could send forth others, but they themselves wouldn’t go to see their newborn King. They didn’t go to seek out Christ, because they had no heart for Him. Although they had a knowledge concerning the birth of Christ, they didn’t have the heart to seek after Him. Unlike the magi from the east, their hearts had become hardened, and they had no desire

to seek after the One whom according to prophecy they had long anticipated. The Jews had only some head knowledge of Christ, whereas the magi received something deeper, a living vision regarding Him. The scribes recited the Scriptures about Christ from memory; the wise men sought Christ himself with their heart. How much more preferable is a heart that remembers the Lord to a mouth that only verbalizes the words of Scripture. This doesn’t suggest that Biblical knowledge is of no value; it only indicates that mere knowledge of God without a heart that desires Him accomplishes very little. God loves all men and has given His Son that they may have eternal life, and He will draw any person who opens his heart to Him. The Father God will save to the uttermost all who call upon His Son’s name. And for those of us who already know Him let us continually open our hearts to Him and seek intimate fellowship with Him, not only at Christmastime but all through the new year and throughout our lives. Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.
