Newly Opened Assisted Living Highland Parks and Recreation is excited to announce their Annual Holiday Showcase dance program, which takes place on December 8th. This year’s program, under the direction of Katie Solina, features ballet, jazz, and musical theater, and has over 70 performers. The dancers, who range

in age from 2 to 14, have been working hard the past 12 weeks to be ready for the Showcase, with over 600 people expected to attend. The Showcase will be presented at Lincoln Center, located at 2450 Lincoln St. in Highland, IN. The performance starts at 6:00 p.m., and admission is $5 at

the door. Ample free parking is available. Children interested in participating in Lincoln Center dance classes can be a part of our Annual Spring Dance Showcase in May. Registration begins mid-December for the next session, which starts January 6th. For more information, call (219) 838-0114.

Community Hospital to Host Lights of Life Event For the past 17 years, holiday lights on the Lights of Life trees outside Community Hospital in Munster have been illuminated and serve as a reminder of the journey of hope that goes along with a cancer diagnosis. Each brilliant pink and lavender light on the Lights of Life trees represents a donation made to the Community Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. The Foundation supports important cancer research initiatives that improve the community’s access to the latest advances in prevention, detection and treatment of breast and other cancers. Nearly 200 area residents gather in attendance as the evergreen trees are illuminated with lavender and pink lights in honor of those touched by cancer. The pink trees represent those with breast cancer and the lavender trees symbolize all types of cancer.

Donors and their honorees are invited to the tree-lighting ceremony at 6 p.m., Wednesday, December 6, at the Community Hospital Outpatient entrance off Columbia and Fisher Avenues. Anyone may participate and “purchase” a light for the Lights of Life trees to honor a special person in their life. Each light represents a $5 donation, which may be made to the Community Cancer Research Foundation. For a $15 donation, in addition to reserving a light, a pink breast cancer awareness pin, a lavender cancer awareness pin, or a Hope lapel cancer awareness pin can be sent to honorees along with a gift card. Special musical entertainment will accompany the tree-lighting, including a performance by Christopher Davis. Davis has participated in numerous shows at The Theatre at the Center in Munster. His past credits include portraying Ernst in Cabaret. He is currently performing the part of Bert, the Cop in A Wonderful Life: The Musical! Besides freelance shows, he frequents

the Chicagoland TYA scene, The Murder Mystery Company, and works with adults with intellectual disabilities at a group home. Two years ago, he lost his dear friend Amy to cancer. She was an equity actress and loving mother. Christopher is proud to honor Amy’s memory along with his Aunt Chris, who succumbed to cancer 15 years ago. He will be performing the song “Anytime (I am There)” by William Finn. After the tree-lighting ceremony, all attendees are invited inside for refreshments following the program. The Lights of Life program began in 2000, and to date, has raised more than $175,000 to bring cancer research programs to people in Northwest Indiana. Cards and pins will be sent out until Dec. 31. All donations to the program are tax deductible and are used to sponsor local research trials for area patients. For more information on this program, call 219-836-6875. Donations are also accepted online at: www.myccrf. com/lights_of_life.asp.

Jones Holds Area-Wide Winter Clothing & Toy Collection Drive In the spirit of the holiday season, State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Calumet City, is hosting a Winter Clothing and Toy Drive this December. Donation drop off locations will be located throughout the area. New and gently used items will be accepted, such as winter coats, gloves, winter hats, scarfs, and toys. Donations will be collected

through Friday, December 15. “The holidays are a great time of year spent with loved ones,” Jones said, “But while many families are out purchasing gifts and wearing warm and comfy clothes, many others are struggling to get by. It is important that we do not forget about the less fortunate and take care of each other as a community.”

There are four donation drop-off locations: • Rep. Thaddeus Jones’ Constituent Service Office at 15525 South Park Ave., Suite 104, South Holland from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. • Thornton Fractional North High School at 755 Pulaski Rd, Calumet City • Gary Comer College Prep at 7131 S South Chicago Ave, Chicago

• Thornton Township High School at 15001 Broadway Ave, Harvey “No one in our community should go through the winter without the clothing they need to keep warm,” Jones said. “By donating, we can help the less fortunate deal with the tough Chicago winters and bring smiles to the faces of children.”

Scott D. Fech, left, and Albert J. LaMere were inducted into Bishop Noll’s Hall of Honor on Nov. 9. _______________________________

For their dedication to Bishop Noll Institute, Albert J. LaMere and Scott D. Fech were recently inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor. Both recipients were honored Nov. 9 during the school’s annual donor reception and Hall of Honor induction. LaMere, who was honored in the category of Outstanding Leadership, has a long and faithful history with Bishop Noll, which was still known as Catholic Central High School when he graduated in 1942. His wife, Dorothy, was a beloved English literature teacher at the school for many years and the couple’s eight children all attended Bishop Noll. When he served as a state senator in the late 1960s, LaMere was a trailblazer in the effort to support private education. “Al as a leader in his community and as a leader in Catholic schools, has always been a strong believer in Catholic education,” said Mary Ellen O’Neill, Noll’s Director of Advancement, at the Hall of Honor ceremony. Al’s sister Linda spoke about how her brother is a gift giver who in 2007 coordinated efforts to place a memorial chapel at Bishop Noll in honor of their deceased brother Father Joseph LaMere. The chapel is still in the main building next to the Media Center. “Students could go in, ponder their thoughts, pray, meditate, and wonder what God had in store for their lives. You wonder how many of those young lives were changed because of that chapel that my brother Al and my brother (Richard ’45) donated. Only God knows,” Linda said. Of being named to the Hall of Honor, LaMere said he feels close to Bishop Noll

because it affected his whole life from his career to his wife and children. “You think about divine intervention—I had so many instances right here at this school, so I believe what you are doing here is correct and I thank you for that.” Fech, who was honored in the Outstanding Alumnus category, graduated from Bishop Noll in 1985 and went on to serve as principal from 2002-2008. “Those were challenging years for Bishop Noll and Scott got us on the right course. He did some great things that have really contributed to the success of Bishop Noll,” said friend and 1985 classmate Michael Whelan. Fech returned to Noll as principal to reconnect with his Catholic identity, Whelan said. He had Noll pride and wanted to promote academic excellence and strengthen his alumni connection. Fech’s successes included the 1:1 laptop program and introducing the Mandarin Chinese program. His tenure also saw growth in Noll’s enrollment numbers. “Dr. Fech was known for walking the halls and knowing the students by their first names. He remains in contact with hundreds of former students as well as his classmates,” Whelan said. Of being inducted into the Hall of Honor, Fech said he was humbled and shocked. The 12th member of his family to attend Noll, he was honored to have gone to high school here and come back as principal. “I am so pleased with how things continue to grow,” he said. Franciscan Health Seeks to Raise Awareness of Prediabetes A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that 84 million American adults (more than 1 in 3) have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are high, but not high enough yet to be classified as type 2 diabetes. People with prediabetes have increased risks to long-term health, including developing type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes are not aware they have the condition. In Indiana 6.9 out of every 100 people have prediabetes, ranking it 18th highest in the nation for the ratio of people with diabetes to the general population. The American Diabetes Association (ADA), American Medical Association (AMA), and CDC, along with the Ad Council, are releasing new public service announcements (PSAs) to build on a successful campaign that has helped hundreds of thousands of Americans learn their risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The new, lighthearted PSAs offer viewers a “perfect way to spend a minute” by taking the oneminute prediabetes risk test while also doing something everyone loves—watching adorable animal videos. Franciscan Health is proud to support the campaign, which raises the urgency of prediabetes and emphasizes the positive message that prediabetes can often be reversed through everyday lifestyle changes. The campaign encourages people to take a short online test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org to learn their risk and speak with their doctor to confirm their diagnosis. The website features lifestyle tips and connects visitors to the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program.

Angel Stories ARLO KALLEMEYN Caesar Augustus had many other titles like rex, imperator, pontifex maximus, and so on. He ruled the Roman Empire which, as far as he was concerned, was the whole world. The Romans treated their Caesar like a god. They worshiped him. People burned incense to him. Augustus is mostly remembered because at the height of his popularity and power, something happened in a rural village located in a distant imperial province. A young pregnant girl rode into town during the busy season. About the only thing that kept her going during her long trip was the memory of an angel’s visit the year before. With a ‘No Vacancy’ sign posted in front of the only hotel in town, she found herself dodging cows and sheep as she made her way to a barn. There in the barn she delivered her baby on a bed of hay and straw. Adapted from F. Buechner’s Beyond Words Written by Harold Kallemeyn Brother of the Shopper Publisher and big fan of the Christmas story.

SSC Paralegal Program Open House at Oak Forest Campus South Suburban College will be hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Saturday, January 6, 2018 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the college’s Oak Forest Center in Room 5190. Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/ Legal Assistant curriculum, including the Associate Degree and certificate programs. In addition, former students of the program, now working as paralegals, will be present to answer questions. The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in legal research and writing techniques including compilation and analysis of data, understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology, and preparation of legal documents. “Whether you are looking for a change in your career path or looking to begin a career, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the law,” says Jason Cieslik, J.D., Coordinator for the Paralegal Studies Program. SSC has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the south and southwest suburban Chicago region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program be lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction. While the majority of the paralegal classes are offered at SSC’s Oak Forest Center (conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue), some classes are offered online. For more information, please contact Mr. Jason Cieslik at (708) 5962000, ext. 2579 or email JCieslik@ssc.edu.

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS Some Kind of Courage By Daniel Gemeinhart Joseph has very little left in his life other than his horse, Sarah. His mother and baby sister died from typhoid. Joseph and his father were making things work, just the two of them, until one day when their wagon overturned and Joseph’s father was trapped beneath. They were too far from a town for Joseph to get help in time. Instead he stayed with his father until he passed away. He was left in the care of a mean alcoholic man who used Joseph to work on his farm while offering him very little in the ways of food in return. One day a very shady horse salesman comes to town. Without Joseph’s permission, the mean man sells his Sarah. The salesman and Sarah are long gone before Joseph gets wind of the situation. But when he does, Joseph takes some money and his father’s gun and heads off to try and buy his horse back. Along the way, Joseph meets up with a Chinese boy named Ah-Kee. Despite not speaking the same language, Ah-Kee joins Joseph on his adventure. Everyone seems to know the horse salesman and points Joseph in the right direction. Along the way,

he encounters a bear, a Native American horse race, a dangerous river complete with rapids, a small family hidden away from nearby towns expecting a baby, and a wanted criminal. Despite all the obstacles, Joseph shows that perseverance and an incomprehensible relationship between boy and animal are enough to defy all odds. Some Kind of Courage is a historical fiction story that takes place in the 1890s in the sparse towns of the Pacific Northwest. While some aspects of the story are completely unbelievable, Joseph’s story is full of excitement and adventure. He shows that anything is possible if you are willing to put forth the effort, which Joseph does time after time. The relationship between Joseph and Ah-Kee is original in that they talk to each other, even though neither can understand the other. Merely the company they share, and the understanding that they both are searching for something missing from their lives, is enough to keep them together. Fans of the Old West, when the horses were the main means of transportation and outlaws lurked among the towns will love to give this book a read.

The National Retail Association says the average shopper will spend about $967 this season online, an increase of about 3.4 percent over last year. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center reported that in 2016, nearly 16,000 online shoppers were victims of credit card fraud in the U.S., ripped off to a tune of $48 million. Vinayak Tanksale, a cyber security expert at Ball State University, offers a few simple ways to stay safe: · Use reputable websites. · Only use sites whose address begins with https and not http. The “s” stands for “secure.” · Copy-and-paste links from emails rather than clicking on such links. · Do not let websites store credit card information for future purchases. · Use credit cards, which offer greater protections, rather than debit cards. · Desktop and laptop browsers are preferable to browsers on cell phones. By exercising caution, online shoppers can minimize fraud and avoid a painful and expensive shopping experience.

to Jim I noticed how much he talked about his staff. “This is by far the best crew I’ve ever had! I have passed on all my recipes to my cooks who, if anything, have only improved the quality of our products.” It appears that the staff at Jimbooos is more than JUST staff; they work together more like a big family. As a long time customer, they make you feel right at home, as if you were also a part of the family. When I finally asked Jim if he ever thinks about retirement, he told me, “I absolutely love what I do. It is a thought that rarely ever comes to mind.” He jokingly went on to say, “Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to hit the Lotto and be able to retire.” I’ve grown up on Jimbooos food for as long as I can remember and I truly hope he is around for another thirty years so I can continue to enjoy it with my family.

I asked Jim, owner of Jimbooos, why he thinks his business has been such a success for so long? He jokingly replied, “LUCK and being very blessed!”, but then he quickly gave credit to his father and grandmother who urged him to “keep up with the service and quality of his business.” Along with the service and quality, I noticed that his prices are very reasonable. When I asked how they are able to keep the prices so low he said that the volume they produce is massive. If you have ever visited one of Jim’s restaurants you know it is not uncommon to see him sitting at his desk with more than one phone line going. “My job has evolved over the years into more of an administrative roll. I am the only one who books all the catering, with that being said I am so busy booking catering jobs all day that I don’t have time for much else.” When talking

Turn of Phrase: “Throw Your Hat into the Ring” — meaning to enter a contest or competition, especially an election. Back when all men wore hats (well into the 1900s), fairground boxing competitions were common. Spectators were invited to try their skill in the boxing ring. To indicate his willingness, a man would literally throw his hat into the ring. The crowd then parted to allow the man to enter.

The holiday shopping season is here, and even as people are caught up in the spirit of giving, a word of caution must be offered to remind shoppers that pickpockets, purse snatchers, and identity thieves don’t stop for the holidays. Those who have had wallets, purses or purchases stolen know all too well the feeling of helplessness and fear that they may never see their personal effects or newly purchased items again. To avoid an unpleasant shopping experience during this holiday season, here are a few tips to combat identity theft and ensure that your pocketbook and merchandise will arrive home with you safely and sound. Anthony Rumore, Vice-President of Secure One Security Services in Crestwood, Illinois, has published “Safety Tips for the Holidays,” the do’s and don’ts of holiday shopping. In his blog, Rumore said, “Shop online with known businesses. Avoid shopping online through pop-up ads as they may be phishing scams or contain malware. Conduct transactions on a secure server only; look for the padlock device on the browser’s status bar. The URL should change from ‘http’ to ‘shttp’ or ‘https’ when asked for payment information, which indicates that the purchase is encrypted or otherwise secure.” Rumore also suggests that shoppers use credit cards when buying goods and services. “Pay by credit card, rather than check/debit card, to reduce the risk of funds taken from your bank account. Keep all receipts and compare them to your monthly statements. To avoid being overcharged; review your

receipt if you pay by debit card, to ensure that the transaction is correct,” he said. When shopping at brick-and-mortar stores, Allstate’s blog suggests placing purchased items in the trunk—never place your purchases openly in the back seat of the car to attract thieves. Make sure car doors are locked. Resist the urge to carry large shoulder bags while shopping. A small, crossbody satchel for women can be worn to alleviate the need to place a purse into a shopping cart. Rumore adds, “Carry your purse close to your body and store your wallet inside a zippered pocket.” A safer place for a wallet is an inside jacket pocket instead of the back pants pocket. Skilled pickpockets can easily lift a wallet from a back pocket. Digital shoppers should be alert whether making online purchases, swiping debit and credit cards, or electronically depositing checks. According to Experian, in 2016 more than 15.4 million people were victims of identity theft. Identity theft is on the rise. Be cautious when giving out personal information such as your social security number and bank account numbers. Finally, make delivery arrangements with your local post office when expecting packages on days when you are not home to receive them. Delivered packages are taken off of thousands of porches during this time of the year. Keep your guard up and enjoy a wonderful shopping outing, and have a safe and happy holiday.

Required Withdrawals from Retirement Plans: What Should You Know? BOB KRYGSHELD You may spend decades contributing to your IRA and 401(k). But, eventually, you’ll need to use the money. Before that day arrives, you’ll want to be familiar with the rules governing withdrawals—and you’ll want to know just how much you should take out. Withdrawals from traditional retirement plans like these fall under the Internal Revenue Service’s “required minimum distributions” (RMD) guidelines. (You aren’t required to take these distributions from a Roth IRA.) Here are some key RMD points: • You generally should begin taking RMDs in the year in which you turn 70-1/2. If you don’t take your first RMD during that year, you must take it no later than April 1 of the following year. If you do put it off until April 1, you must take two distributions in one year. If you don’t take your RMDs on time, you may have to pay the IRS a 50 percent penalty tax on the taxable portion of your uncollected distribution — so make sure you know your dates. • You can withdraw more than the RMD, but, as the word “required” suggests, you can’t withdraw less. • You may be able to delay RMDs in an employer’s retirement plan if you’re still working. If your employer’s retirement plan permits it, you may not have to take RMDs if you are still working and you are 70-1/2 or older. However, this exception won’t apply if you own 5 percent or more of your company. To determine your RMD, you’ll need to use either the Uniform Lifetime Table, which is based on your life expectancy, or the Joint Life Table, if you have a spouse who is the sole beneficiary and who is more than 10 years younger. Your tax advisor can help you make this selection. So, now that you know the basic rules of RMDs, you’ll need to consider their impact on your retirement income. As mentioned above, you can certainly take out more than the RMD, but should you? If you need the extra money, then you’ll have to take it. However, when determining how much you should take beyond your RMDs, you’ll need to weigh some other factors. For one thing, if you can delay taking Social Security, you’ll get bigger checks, so you might be able to lower the amounts you take from your 401(k) and IRA. Another factor to consider is your investment portfolio held outside your retirement accounts. If you have a sizable amount of investments, with some of them providing regular income, you may be able to afford to take out only your RMDs, or perhaps just slightly more. On the other hand, if your 401(k) and IRA make up the vast majority of your investment holdings, you might need to rely on them much more heavily. In any case, though, you will need to establish an appropriate withdrawal rate for all your investments to ensure you won’t outlive your money. A financial professional can help you calculate this rate. Do whatever it takes to maximize your benefits from your IRA and 401(k). They’re valuable assets—so use them wisely. Tips to Beat the Holiday Blues We see it on television, magazine ads and movies—a table covered with delicious food, a perfectly decorated house, and family and friends laughing together in the glow of a warm fire. Unrealistic expectations can lead to the “holiday blues,” which often begins before Thanksgiving and lasts until after the first of the year, according to Ellen Lucas, associate director of Ball State’s Counseling Center. She points out other factors contributing to holiday stress: the loss of a job or home, a friend or relative unable to come home or grief for someone who has recently died. In addition, people frequently experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and feel more depressed due to the short, cold, gloomy days of winter, she said. So what can you do? Lucas has 10 ideas: 1. Set realistic expectations and accept that no holiday gathering is perfect. 2. Make a holiday budget and stick to it. 3. Express your feelings. Write in a journal or talk to someone you trust. 4. Make a plan and realistically structure your time.

5. Reach out to other people. Volunteer through your community or church. 6. Watch your alcohol consumption; alcohol is a depressant. 7. Exercise. Take a walk, do resistance training or do yoga. This will help release endorphins, the natural opiates in our brains. 8. Stick to your usual eating habits. Plan what you will eat before going to gatherings so you don’t overeat. 9. Don’t compare yourself to others. You don’t need to have the best light display in the neighborhood or the best party or give the most expensive presents. 10. Think about what is the most important part of the holidays for you and focus on what the holidays mean to you. Lucas advises those who have feelings of depression lasting more than two weeks to seek professional attention. Symptoms include a disturbance in sleeping or eating, an inability to concentrate and feeling hopeless and worthless.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS that the home was now under contract. Now we think we should have been given the first chance to accept the owner’s terms instead of it being sold to someone else. The home had been on the market for more than a year so it wasn’t like there was a great demand for it. What do you think? Answer: You were given any number of chances to buy the property. First you made an offer that was not accepted. Then the owners made a counter-offer that you could have instantly accepted—but did not. Then you re-submitted your original offer and it was not accepted by the sellers. Lastly, you want another chance at the counter-offer you first rejected but by this time the owners have accepted a bid from other purchasers. The bottom line: You had your chance. Question: I’m about to purchase a brand new home. The house was finished recently and hasn’t been on the market long. How do I know how much room a builder has to come down off the asking price of a brand new home? Answer: Builders are remarkably firm. Keep in mind if they cut the selling price for you, they pretty much have to cut the selling price for all similar models. Generally builders will work with you on the extras. How much? That depends on the market: supply and demand. Certainly check past sales with your Realtor or with the local property records office. Also, see if you can get a discount in the form of upgrades, improvements, interest-rate reductions or settlement discounts—this allows the builder to maintain the appearance of pricing without a discount. Question: We recently made an offer on a home, the owner counter-offered, we turned down the counter-offer. A few days later we e-mailed the broker that we would like to make the same offer again. A couple of days later the broker called and said the owner was considering our offer. A few more days passed, we heard nothing from the broker, but we decided to go with the owner’s counter-offer if the seller turned us down again. The call never came from the broker. Instead an e-mail was sent saying the owner didn’t accept our original offer and

South Suburban College Head Baseball Coach Steve Ruzich will be directing a two-day Catching Camp on Tuesday, December 26th and Wednesday, December 27th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Coach Ruzich has directed youth camps for the past 32 years and has taught baseball skills at many other baseball camps throughout the state. This clinic will provide catching instruction in the areas of blocking, calling a game, pick offs, pop throwing times, stance and footwork, drills for practice, pop ups, handling pitchers, and conditioning. In addition to Ruzich’s instruction, Bulldog baseball players will be on hand to help and develop skills. The players’ enthusiasm and expertise always adds to the camp’s success. The Catching Camp is open to boys ages 8-18. All players should bring their own glove and gear. All participants should wear baseball or sweat pants and gym shoes, and boys must wear cups. Coach Ruzich was an All-American catcher at the College of St. Francis. He graduated in 1985 and was drafted by the Chicago White Sox. Coach Ruzich had a short stint as a pro catcher before coming to SSC as Head Baseball Coach in 1987, where he has compiled a winning record of 1112-654. The cost of the Catching Camp is $100, and checks should be made payable to SSC Bulldog Baseball. Enrollment is limited, so early registration is suggested. South Suburban College is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, IL. For more information contact Coach Ruzich at (708) 225-5843. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD The Bible is shockingly straightforward. Take Genesis 38. Here we meet Judah and Tamar, ancestors of Jesus (Matthew 1:3). The story is ugly. Judah sold his brother Joseph into slavery, then turned his back on his family. And on God. Judah married and had three sons. But God killed two of them for their evil. Then his wife died. Now only Judah and one son remained. And Tamar. She was his oldest son’s widow. Back then, if a man left a widow but no child, a brother was expected to marry her. Their first son would be the dead brother’s heir to preserve his family line and estate. This arrangement also ensured the widow’s protection and provision. Judah had promised Tamar that she could marry his remaining son when he grew up. But he had no intention of letting her get near his son. Soon it dawned on Tamar that Judah was stringing her along. Now she was

desperate. Judah hadn’t given her to his son, nor had he released her to marry someone else. Soon she would be forced to beg or sell her body to survive. Desperate, she dressed like a prostitute to ensnare her father-in-law. He took the bait, leaving Tamar pregnant with his twins. When Judah discovered that Tamar was pregnant, his response was heartless and hypocritical. “Bring her out! Burn her!” At that moment, Tamar exposed Judah as the father of her children. This painful ‘aha’ moment left Judah a changed man. He returned to his God and to his family, a sacrificial, transformed leader. And Perez, son of his sordid encounter with Tamar, became the ancestor of our Savior. Jesus, our Savior, from Judah and Tamar! In him, God still forgives our sins and transforms our messes. Richard Zekveld, Pastor Covenant Fellowship Church.

MIKE BUDER Should kids come along to look at houses? I get asked this question a lot. My answer to this question has always been “No.” However, I do let the buyers know what the process is going to be like and how it’s so much harder with kids. First point is, kids, no matter what age, usually only last about 2 to 3 houses. If you have 5, 6, or 10 houses to see that day, do you really think you can concentrate if you have to constantly listen to kids ask, “Are we done yet?” Second point is, no matter how “well behaved” your child is, they’re never well behaved enough to not run around a vacant house or not touch something in an occupied house. Kids just don’t really see those boundaries, and if the sellers are home, any child not their own is never well behaved. Third point, as someone who might be spending tens of thousand of dollars on one of these houses, you’re not able to focus on the houses and really give them the attention they deserve because you’re worrying about which way your kid(s) ran and if they’re inside or outside, or if they’re upstairs or downstairs. Buying a house is a very emotional thing for most buyers, and it’s best to have focus. Kids can be a major distraction. With that, what do you do with the kids? The first option might be a trusted friend, relative, or neighbor to watch them while you’re

viewing homes. Most of my buyers look at houses during the day when their kids are in school. But you work? Well, when do you go to the dentist or doctor appointments? Most don’t have evening hours, so you schedule first thing in the morning, during your lunch break, or towards the end of the workday before you pick up your kids, right? Well just think the same way about house hunting. A house purchase is a huge purchase. Why not go into work at 10AM instead of 8AM? Why not spend your lunch break looking at houses? Why not leave work at 3 PM to see a couple? Many of my clients take an hour or two out of their workweek to view houses, instead of waiting until the weekend when they have nothing to do with the kids except bring them along. Finally, If you absolutely want to have your kids blessing or final approval on the home you purchase, find it first, and then set up a special viewing so you can all enjoy that moment as a family without all the stress. BIBLES FOR MISSIONS THRIFT CENTER: Just in time for Christmas, on 2821 old Highway Avenue in Highland, IN is a great Thrift Center featuring every kind of clothing, toy, furniture, household item, book and so on. The Thrift Center is run by Bible League International and they have provided Bibles to Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East—not to mention the U.S. You can support all this via purchases at their Thrift Stores. Thousands upon thousands of Bibles have been given to third world countries where missionaries are bringing God’s Word to those countries. Pictured here are two volunteers at the Thrift Center, Betty and Carol who are very proud of the vast number of Bibles delivered to these countries and the good that the Thrift Center does by allowing gently used or like-new items to be sold for pennies on the dollar, making Christmas giving more affordable. Also, if you ask, they will give you a Bible free of cost! The Thrift Center is also looking for volunteers. If interested please call them at 219-923-6436. *** CALUMET REVISITED: Monthly forums on the Calumet Region’s past, present and future. The monthly discussions are led by guest speakers and shed light on t he Reg ion’s r ich hu ma n h istor y and environmental treasures. Practical suggestions for meeting the needs of Region residents while honoring and preserving the natural beauty around us will be shared by participants, also. The discussions will be held on the campus of Calumet College of St. Joseph (CCSJ). The discussions start at 5 p.m. in room 200 of CCSJ, 2400 New York Avenue, Whiting, IN. Sponsored jointly by AWLI and Calumet College of St. Joseph History program, and made possible by a matching grant from Indiana Huma nit ies in cooperat ion w it h t he National Endowment for the Humanities, and from the Legacy Foundation of Lake County. ***

GI V ING THE TR EE THE TR IM A ND BAKING COOKIES: Coldwell Banker (and Burnet Title) Schererville, IN, Brokers a nd fa m i ly members t raveled dow n to Ronald McDonald House in Chicago to decorate a tree and bake cookies for the families of children being treated at Lurie Childrens’ Hospital. The location

on Grand Avenue is a multi-story building staffed almost entirely by volunteers (and there is a waiting list to get to volunteer there). The families are treated to free meals at the communal kitchen, snacks, and cozy family rooms, (toy rooms, library rooms) set up with television and games. The families pay only $5 per day for the sleeping rooms set up for them, which rival a classy downtown hotel. The Ronald McDonald House is the official Coldwell Ba n ker cha r it y a nd a l l Brokers a re encouraged to support it. In one photo we are pictured on the roof of RMcDH with the Coldwell Banker tree. Tree trimmers include Jim O, Jim B, Gina M,. Cathy M, Donna T, Janice MK and Rick J. In another photo we are gathered in the communal kitchen after baking dozens of cookies for the families. We are Cathy H, Janice MK, Ellen O, Jim O, Gina M, Donna T, Jim B and Rick J. The kitchen is completely outfitted for full meals with 4 high-end stoves, all the kitchen equipment needed to prepare any type of meal and volunteer helpers for clean up! We all left RMcDH feeling as though we made a difference, however small. Special Thanks to Jim Oster, Broker Manager of Coldwell Banker Schererville, Indiana for providing the tree, ornaments and travel arrangements, not to mention lunch at Vola re ! Blessings to a l l t he children at Lurie’s and their families hoping for miracles. They sometimes happen! ***

LINCOLN’S SA NDW ICHES IN HIGHLAND: Formerly of Calumet City (1979), they have roots that go back to Gary, IN; 1963 to be exact, when Helen Stasi nos’ Dad, George, sta r ted up a restaurant in the 1940’s. Mom Catherine joi ne d t he bu s i ne s s w he n t he i r 3 daughters were older. One of the pictures with this item is from a photo hanging in Lincoln’s today set in the B & O train station in the 1950s. The kids holding the 9 foot sandwich are paper boys who delivered the local paper at the time. The boys won a trip to Washington D.C. Kind hearted George decided to give the boys a treat to eat on the train to D.C. and so he prepared the long, long sandwich. Pictured in f ront k neeling a re t he 3 Stasinos girls, Carol, Bunny and Helen. Carol passed away a few years ago. Bunny lives in Florida and joins Helen who runs Lincoln’s in Highland, IN during the holidays now. Helen is pictured here at the cash register just before Thanksgiving taking orders for those famous pumpkin pies of hers. She will be taking orders for pies for Christmas as well. Just be sure and order early! *** WHAT TO DO WITH THE KIDS WHILE ON WINTER VACATION FROM SCHOOL: Here is a suggestion: Calumet Memorial Park District will be hosting HOLIDAY CAMP for kids from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Speaking Of Seniors

Lots of Work to Fix WOODROW WILCOX Some people think that a government program to “solve” a problem is a perfect solution. Those people never bother to think of the details. The more complicated a system is, the more things can go wrong. This is true with both mechanical devices and human systems. A good example is the Medicare medical bill problem of a client from Schererville, Indiana. I’ve been helping her for several months now. The core of her problem is that Medicare dragged its feet about updating her Medicare records when she switched from one policy to another. Her former employer had provided good prescription drug coverage, but stopped. She did not like the new coverage offered and cancelled the policy to get what she did want. Medicare did not change the records. Ten months after the client made the switch, Medicare was still sending claims to the wrong insurance company. Medical bills were not getting paid and doctors and clinics started to hound our client for payment. Our client’s problems could have been prevented if Medicare worked well. In my almost 15 years of helping senior citizens with Medicare related problems, I have learned that the

Medicare system was not designed to help seniors as so many people imagine. The system was designed to put billions of tax dollars into the pockets of Medicare government employees and Medicare government contractors. I have spent hours helping our client. I even helped her to file a complaint against Medicare for its sloppy work. Our client continues to get bills because her current insurance company is not getting the claims from Medicare. This upsets our client. I’m sure that she would be more upset if I were not helping her. Our insurance agency is not making money by helping our client. We are losing money but building a good reputation among seniors. We have built a reputation that when—not if—the Medicare system fails and threatens to do financial harm to one of our clients, we will “go the extra mile” to help the client fix the problem. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBME$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

4 LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU SCHERERVILLE

Trees, as far back into my childhood as I can remember, have always been a source of peace, tranquility, and beauty. My favorite spot at family picnics was to lie under their outstretched branches, looking upward at the sun and sky through the leaves. I’d marvel at the miracle of God’s creative work displayed in nature. As an adult, my favorite outdoor spot continues to be underneath the serene beauty of trees, where I’m always drawn into deep conversations with the LORD. Trees play a very prominent role throughout the Biblical narrative. For instance, they provided the opportunity of choice in the Garden of Eden; the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Unfortunately, Adam and Eve chose the latter. The psalmist in Psalm 1 used the tree to describe the person who delights in God’s law and on it meditates day and night. “He is like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bringing forth fruit in season with lush green leaves that will never wither, prospering in everything he/she does.” It was under a palm tree that the Prophetess Deborah sat and counseled Israel as a judge before the days of the kings. It was a group of trees (olives, figs, and

vines) and a bramble Jotham used to illustrate and foretell the fate of Abimelech, who murdered their brothers (sons of Gideon) to make himself king over the people. Then, there’s the fig tree that failed to produce figs at its appointed time, and withered away under Jesus’ curse. And let’s not forget the Tree of Life, on either side of the crystal river of life flowing from God’s throne, whose leaves are for the healing of the nations in the New Jerusalem. The trees that come to mind as we live in these difficult days are mentioned in Habakkuk’s Hymn of Faith following God’s pronouncement of judgment on corrupt Israel: “Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vine; Though the labor of the olive may fail, and the fields yield no food; … Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, and He will make me walk on my high hill.” (Hab. 3:17-19) For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com.
