Jack and Jill Gifts Catholic Charities at Annual Christmas Brunch while the children played table games and chased balloons. Jack and Jill’s Jalilah Dukes then presented the gifts to Catholic Charities volunteer, Judy Tonk, to deliver to the fortunate family. The gifts were then wrapped, and a group of teenagers helped load them into Mrs. Tonk’s car. A delicious lunch was enjoyed, and afterward the member moms participated in a gift-grab, with not-a-few “steals” to liven the action. Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2-19, dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. Catholic Charities was guest of honor at Jack and Jill’s Christmas brunch on December 9. Celebrated at the Patrician in Schererville, the event allowed Jack and Jill member moms and their families to celebrate the season while benefiting a needy family. This year Catholic Charities chose a needy family to receive gifts purchased by Jack and Jill. With small children and a new baby on the way, the family faced a particularly meager Christmas before being “adopted” by Catholic Charities and Jack and Jill. Says Jack and Jill’s Nina Greer, “We are excited to partner with Catholic Charities this year in adopting a family for the holidays.” The wide array of gifts was placed on display unwrapped as guests arrived; the adults admired the gifts and mingled

ANNA M. CAISON When I think about Christmas, one word comes to mind: Emmanuel, which means “God with us.” Christmas, for the child of God, is a celebration of when God clothed Himself in flesh and lived among His creation. He experienced development in the womb, birth, infancy, childhood, being a teenager and becoming an adult. He lived under the care and authority of parents (a mother and a stepfather), had siblings, went to school, learned the trade of His stepfather and worked for a living. He knew what it felt like to be hungry and to be full. He knew the love of parents, and the struggle to be accepted by siblings and peers. And because He was sinless, He experienced ridicule from those who were offended by His righteousness. Therefore, the writer of Hebrews says we can come to Him for help in any situation we find ourselves in because He has experienced humanity on every level—emotionally, mentally, and physically—but without sin. Although Jesus is no longer with us in bodily form, He continues to live among us through the

Holy Spirit’s work in the earth and in His presence within His people. There are 21 names in the Old Testament that express the way God revealed Himself to His people. And each of these expressions is revealed in Jesus. My favorite expression of God is “I Am.” He revealed Himself to Moses as “I Am” and in a confrontation with the religious leaders, Jesus revealed Himself as “I Am.” This expression leads me back to the name given by the Prophet Isaiah, Emmanuel. Since the start of the Christmas Season I’ve been thinking of all the ways God has revealed Himself to me since I received Him as Savior and Lord. My hope and prayer for this Christmas is that you will be reminded of all the ways the Lord has revealed Himself to you. No matter what occurs in world, our nation, communities, and in our personal lives, we can rest assure that we are safe in His arms. For questions and/or comments send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com. Angel Stories ARLO KALLEMEYN

This poster designed by Catherine Menge recently won first place in its division from the Indiana Foreign Language Teacher’s Association poster contest.

Bishop Noll sophomore Catherine Menge recently won a state-wide poster contest.

_______________________________ Putting her creativity and talent to work, Bishop Noll sophomore Catherine Menge recently won first place in a statewide poster contest. Her poster, which featured a globe as the pupil of an eye, won in the high school division of the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association’s annual competition. Winners received a cash prize and have the honor of having their work displayed on the Association’s official website. Menge, of Hammond, said she was inspired by the thought of connections. “I thought about seeing the world through other people’s eyes. Learning another language is about speaking, but it’s also about getting to know other people’s views and ideas.” A gifted artist, Menge writes and For sale: 2001 Landrover Discovery 11SE, A/C runs good, $1200 or best offer, silver color. illustrates a regular cartoon series for the JourNoll, Bishop Noll’s student newspaper. While she was surprised to learn her artwork won at the state level, her teacher and classmates knew her poster was something special. “Catherine is a model student who is doing very well in her second year of French,” said BNI French teacher Diane Wilson. “I regularly ask students to illustrate little stories they write for French class and Catherine’s are always special.” When the class saw Menge’s contest entry, they instantly knew it would be a serious contender. “It was such a polished and unique interpretation of the contest theme,” Wilson said. “We were all rooting for her and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results. The honor is well deserved.”

Menge said she had fun making the poster and is glad others liked her work as well. She enjoys her French classes at Noll because, “we don’t just learn the language, we also go on field trips and get a chance to interact with each other. One of the best parts is when the French exchange students come to Bishop Noll to learn about us.” Menge is also involved in jazz band, pit band, drama club and art club at Noll. Bishop Noll Institute, a private college preparatory school located at 1519 Hoffman St, in Hammond, IN, offers foreign language courses in Mandarin Chinese, French and Spanish. The Catholic high school is currently enrolling new students for Fall 2018. Call (219) 932-9058 or visit bishopnoll. org for more information.

Mary was hoping to get a little sleep before dawn. But just as she dozed off, a racket startled her awake. Men came barging into the village yelling and singing. They banged around until they found their way into the barn. Mary smelled the arrival of the shepherds even before they all crowded in around her and the baby. They were talking excitedly. Joseph told them to slow down. He explained that they were from up north and had a hard time following their dialect. The shepherds told them about a visit from the angels. Joseph thought: “We could tell a few angel stories too.” But the angels visiting the shepherds didn’t come solo. A whole crowd of them showed up in the pasture with a full sound and light show. The noisy shepherds finally headed back to their fields, waking up some more irate villagers as they left. Mary and Joseph dozed off wondering, “What’s going on?” It wasn’t the last time they asked that question. You’re reputation is only as good as the WORST thing you’ve ever done. Yes, let me repeat that…You’re reputation is only as good as the WORST thing you’ve ever done. This is true in all aspects of life. In the real estate business, your reputation is everything. It provides you a platform for maintaining and growing your business. It is what separates you from everyone else and allows you to shine above the crowd. It takes years to develop your reputation. Hours and hours of putting yourself out there and letting the world see how you can add value to their real estate experience. You have zero control over what people say about you, so it is of the utmost importance that you do everything possible to ensure that everyone who comes into your world, views you in a very positive light. We as Realtors are also viewed by the quality of service provided by the people we refer our clients to. In reality, it is generally only the referrals who don’t provide superior service that we are remembered by. We have all made mistakes and of course we learn from them, but it is how we respond to those mistakes that leaves the most important impression. If we make a mistake and don’t deal with it head

on, it will be the thing that we are remembered for. This last year, the headlines have been filled with stories about some very significant situations that relate to some very horrible things that may or may not have been done by public figures. The people involved had spent their careers building a strong reputation of achievement and success. Some of the reputations that are being soiled are of people who were not directly involved in the accused acts. They are being judged for their inaction in reporting the deeds committed by others. Although, in some cases, no one remembered the worst elements of the current claims. No matter what you’re faced with in your business, place of work, church, school, sporting event, family function, etc. ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING and your reputation will take care of itself. Scott D. Fech, left, and Albert J. LaMere were inducted into Bishop Noll’s Hall of Honor on Nov. 9. _______________________________

For their dedication to Bishop Noll Institute, Albert J. LaMere and Scott D. Fech were recently inducted into the school’s Hall of Honor. Both recipients were honored Nov. 9 during the school’s annual donor reception and Hall of Honor induction. LaMere, who was honored in the category of Outstanding Leadership, has a long and faithful history with Bishop Noll, which was still known as Catholic Central High School when he graduated in 1942. His wife, Dorothy, was a beloved English literature teacher at the school for many years and the couple’s eight children all attended Bishop Noll. When he served as a state senator in the late 1960s, LaMere was a trailblazer in the effort to support private education. “Al as a leader in his community and as a leader in Catholic schools, has always been a strong believer in Catholic education,” said Mary Ellen O’Neill, Noll’s Director of Advancement, at the Hall of Honor ceremony. Al’s sister Linda spoke about how her brother is a gift giver who in 2007 coordinated efforts to place a memorial chapel at Bishop Noll in honor of their deceased brother Father Joseph LaMere. The chapel is still in the main building next to the Media Center. “Students could go in, ponder their thoughts, pray and ponder and at times, wonder, meditate what God had in store for their lives. You wonder how many of those young lives, because of that chapel that my brother Al and my brother (Richard ’45) donated, were changed. Only God will know,” Linda said. Of being named to the Hall of Honor, LaMere said he feels close to Bishop Noll because it affected his whole life from his

career to his wife and children. “You think about divine intervention and I had so many instances right here at this school so I believe what you are doing here is correct and I thank you for that.” Fech, who was honored in the Outstanding Alumnus category, graduated from Bishop Noll in 1985 and went on to serve as principal from 2002-2008. “Those were challenging years for Bishop Noll and Scott got us on the right course. He did some great things that have really contributed to the success of Bishop Noll,” said friend and 1985 classmate Michael Whelan. Fech returned to Noll as principal to reconnect with his Catholic identity, Whelan said. He had Noll pride and wanted to promote academic excellence and strengthen his alumni connection. Fech’s successes included the 1:1 laptop program and introducing the Mandarin Chinese program. His tenure also saw growth in Noll’s enrollment numbers. “Dr. Fech was known for walking the halls and knowing the students by their first names. He remains in contact with hundreds of former students and his classmates,” Whelan said. Of being inducted into the Hall of Honor, Fech said he was humbled and shocked. The 12th member of his family to attend Noll, he was honored to have gone to high school here and come back as principal. “I am so pleased with how things continue to grow,” he said. Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Speaking Of Seniors

Glen Park Client Delighted WOODROW WILCOX On November 7, 2017, a senior citizen client from the Glen Park neighborhood of Gary visited our office to ask about some papers that she got. A medical firm seemed to be billing her for $31,863.44. Our client was delighted to know that our insurance agency has someone to help our senior citizen clients with Medicare related medical bill problems. After our meeting, I typed a letter to the firm that billed our client. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm which sent the document that frightened our client. Dear Representative, Your firm has some bad business practices. Today, at 11:55 a.m., our client and I tried to phone your firm to ask questions about an Explanation of Benefits from your firm which states that our client has a financial responsibility to your firm of $31,863.44. When we phoned your firm to question this, first no one answered. Then, the call was disconnected. If someone had answered, I would have asked the following questions. Since no one answered, please send a written response to these questions to our client. Why does your Explanation of Benefits state “This is not a bill” at one place and “Your Financial Responsibility” ($31,836.44) at another place? Didn’t

any supervisor at your firm realize that this could be confusing and frightening to a patient? The client’s Medicare Summary Notice states that Medicare paid your firm $7,584.54. Why isn’t that payment reflected in your document to our client? The client’s Medicare Summary Notice states that your firm filed the same claim multiple times. Explain why your firm filed the same claim multiple times. The client’s Medicare Summary Notice states that the maximum she may be billed for this service is $1,402.54. Since she has a Standard Plan F Medicare supplement policy, the entire balance should be paid by her insurance company when it receives the claim. Explain why your form to our client did not reflect any payment by the insurance company. Sending form letters like the one you sent to our client only confuses and frightens senior citizens on Medicare. It is a bad business practice. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that agency over one million dollars. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

“special buyer” who will appreciate your 1980’s décor and wallpaper, and is willing to pay you top dollar for your home because of your real estate prowess, you’re going to have a long wait. Maybe you didn’t listen to your agent when he said you are pricing your home above the market. Maybe you got mad at the first few buyers who looked at your home and didn’t make offers. When the showings stopped completely, maybe you accused your agent of not doing a good enough job. You put the blame on everyone except where it belongs—on you. It’s not about you, what you want, or how much you need for your retirement. It’s about the price. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Thinking of Selling your Home? Question: I’ve had my home for sale now for almost a year. I don’t know why my home is not selling. I have a newer furnace & central air. My agent says it is too high in price. I know my house is worth what I’m asking. Any suggestions? Answer: The real truth is “Location, condition, and price.” And price trumps every other factor. Location affects the value of a home, but it’s price that sells a home. Oceanfront, mountainside, or penthouse, the most desirable location in the world won’t sell at the wrong price. A good location will sell at a fair price. A bad location will sell at a fair price, too. It just won’t be as a high as it would be for a good location. A home in good condition will sell for a fair price. A home in poor condition will also sell at a fair price. Again, it won’t be as high as a comparable home in better condition. But neither location or condition will sell any house. Only one thing does that— price. So if you’re a seller waiting for that

Girls Worldwide Excel in Collaborative Problem Solving International eduction researcher C.M. Rubin says “Ongoing rapid technological advancements continue to change our world. What competencies will young people need in order to succeed, given the complex challenges this creates?” Global problem solvers are already in high demand, and that demand will only increase. Just Google the term “Re-Imagine Education” and check out the wealth of conferences and events focused on which individuals have the skills to think like entrepreneurs and collaborate with people from all backgrounds. According to Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, this first-ever worldwide assessment of collaborative problem-solving skills aims to help countries and economies see where their students stand in relation to their peers in other education systems. Students in 52 countries completed this test, in addition to the main OECD PISA 2015

Survey on Science, Mathematics and Reading. According to the OECD study, 15 year-old girls outperformed boys in collaborative problem-solving in every country around the world. Says Schleicher, “Girls show more positive attitudes towards relationships, meaning that they tend to be more interested in others’ opinions and want others to succeed.” Schleicher also notes that “strong academic skills will not automatically also lead to strong social skills. Part of the answer lies in giving students more ownership over the time, place, path, pace, and interactions of their learning. Another part of the answer can lie in fostering more positive relationships at school, and designing learning environments that benefit students’ attitudes towards collaboration and promote collaborative problem-solving skills.” Read more at http://www.cmrubinworld. com/around-the-world-in-30-daysnovember-2017.

Applications are available for the Indiana Conference for Legal Education Opportunity (ICLEO) program. The ICLEO program is designed to assist traditionally underrepresented groups in pursuing a legal career. The Supreme Court established ICLEO 20 years ago to help bring diversity to the legal profession. Applications are available online at courts. in.gov/cleo and are due by March 1, 2018. ICLEO offers students a preparatory institute the summer before law school. This year, the institute is being hosted at Notre Dame Law School. The Summer Institute curriculum places a strong emphasis on academic rigor and provides professional development programming, field visits, and social events. Students who successfully complete the Summer Institute may be eligible for a scholarship for up to three years. The scholarship is currently $4,500 per semester. To be eligible, applicants must be college graduates by the time the six-week ICLEO Summer Institute begins in June 2018. All applicants go through a rigorous application process that is separate from the Indiana law school application process. Those interested in receiving updates about the Indiana CLEO program can subscribe at courts.in.gov/3681.htm. Please contact ICLEO Director Ashley Rozier at ICLEO@ courts.in.gov with questions.

Financial Advice Column

Can You Afford to Retire Early? BOB KRYGSHELD Some people dream of retiring early. Are you one of them? If so, you’ll need to plan ahead—because a successful early retirement can’t be achieved through last-minute moves. So, if you’re determined to retire early, consider taking the following steps: • Pick a date. Early retirement means different things to different people. But it’s important to pick an exact age, whether it is 60, 64, or whatever, so you can build an appropriate retirement income strategy. • Think about your retirement lifestyle. Have you thought about what you want to do with your newfound time? Will you simply stay close to home and pursue your hobbies? Do you dream of spending time each winter on a tropical island? Or are you thinking of opening your own small business or doing some consulting? Different retirement lifestyles can have vastly different price tags. Once you’ve envisioned your future, you can develop a saving and investment plan to help you get there. • Boost contributions to your retirement plans. If you want to retire early, you may well need to accelerate your contributions to your retirement accounts. You may need to cut back in other areas of your life to maximize the amounts you put into your retirement plans, but this sacrifice may be worth it to you. • Invest for growth. Your investment strategy essentially should be based on three key factors: your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. When you change any one of these variables, it will affect the others. So, if you shorten your time horizon by retiring early, you may well need to reconsider your risk tolerance. Specifically,

you may need to accept a somewhat higher level of investment risk so you can invest for greater growth potential. • Keep a lid on your debt load. It’s easier said than done, but try to manage your debt load as tightly as possible. The lower your monthly debt payments, the more you can contribute to your retirement plans. Life is unpredictable. Even if you take all the steps described above, you may still fall short of your goal of retiring early. While this may be somewhat disappointing, you might find that adding just a few more years of work can be beneficial to building resources for your chosen retirement lifestyle. For one thing, you can continue contributing to your IRA and your employer-sponsored plan. Plus, if you’re still working, you may be able to afford delaying your Social Security payments until you’re closer to your “normal” retirement age, which, as defined by the Social Security Administration, likely will be 66 or 67. The longer you put off taking these benefits, the bigger your monthly checks, although they will max out once you reach 70. And even if you are not able to retire early, some of the moves you took to reach that goal—such as contributing as much as you could afford to your IRA and 401(k), controlling your debts, and so on— may pay off for you during your retirement, whenever it begins. RICHARD ZEKVELD She ran a hotel, complete with sexual services on the menu. This was acceptable, even respectable in her culture. One day, two foreigners booked a room. They tried to blend in. But few were fooled. They were scouts from an enemy army across the river. Someone sounded the alarm, and the king sent troops to arrest them. The innkeeper-prostitute met them at the door. “Yes. The men came here. But they just left. If you hurry, you’ll catch up with them.” Hidden on the hotel roof, the astonished men wondered why this woman would risk her neck to save theirs. Why indeed? Was she a Benedict Arnold? Was she a shameless opportunist, determined to align herself with the winning side before they marched into town? No. Conviction drove her conduct. A settled conviction that took root in her heart and bore fruit in heroic behavior. She

said to the men, “I’ve heard all about your God. He’s the one true God. And he will give you this land. I want to belong to him and his family. Please spare my family and me.” They promised. As they shimmied down a red cord over the city wall, they said, “Keep your family in the house with you. And hang this red cord out the window.” When the walls came down, Rahab’s hotel still stood, marked by a red cord. By faith, Rahab broke with her people, her gods and her former way of life, to embrace a new life in relationship with Israel’s God and his people. She married and became a mother of Jesus, our Savior (Matthew 1:5). As with Rahab, so with us. Faith in Jesus frees us from destruction to find life in God’s family. And such faith will surely bear fruit. Richard Zekveld. Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church.

6 Tips to Protect Your Company’s Valuable Data from Ransomware Ransomware can quickly cripple a business and the problem appears to be growing, as evidenced recently when the U.S. government issued a warning about Bad Rabbit, a ransomware attack that spread through Russia, the Ukraine and other countries. Such attacks can be costly for businesses because ransomware infects a computer, blocks access to computer files, and demands that money be paid before the computer is “released.” If there’s no data backup, the business could be in serious trouble. “Most attacks are against financial, medical and retail business sectors,” says Penny Garbus, co-founder of Soaring Eagle Consulting Inc. (www. SoaringEagle.guru) and co-author of Mining New Gold – Managing your Business Data. “The ransoms are usually $1,000 and most companies pay it. In some cases these days, though, money isn’t the goal. I think [hackers] are moving towards more terroristic attacks and are being paid simply to create havoc.” Unfortunately, even paying a ransom is no guarantee a company’s data will be freed because on occasion the perpetrators demand even more money, she says. “The worst-case scenario, though, occurs when the attacker has so completely destroyed data files and infected hard drives that they are unable to get the data back,” Garbus says. “The Prime door solid core (6 panel) 32” wide x 77” long x 1 3/4” thick, has glass insert 24” x 36” painted white, perfect shape $30 obo. 708481-6907

data,” Garbus says. • Be careful about Google search results. Sometimes a Google search itself makes you vulnerable. You don’t want to download anything unless you know you are on the correct site. Garbus says the criminal hackers now have very sophisticated strategies to get you to click and download their malware and can infect your environment very quickly. • Figure out what kind of ransomware you’re dealing with. If your system is hijacked, know this; Not all ransomware is equal and you may not need to pay the ransom. One type of ransomware basically locks you out of your applications and processes. It may create a barrier between you and the computer’s interface so you can’t get past the ransomware attack screen. But the good news is this type of ransomware can be cleansed and your files restored without paying the ransom. A second type of ransomware is more insidious. It encrypts and renames your files so yo don’t have any access to them until you give in to the ransom demands. “Businesses should review their security processes at least once a year,” Garbus says. “You may want to hire an outside source to review security and, if you believe it necessary, even hire a professional hacker to look for holes in your system.”

cost can run into thousands or even millions of dollars to get the company up and running again.” So how does a business protect itself against ransomware? Garbus suggests a few precautions. • Beware of viruses masquerading as virus protection. Do your research and make sure you’re purchasing your virus protection from a reputable brand. Be careful of virus protection software that appears magically and tells you it detected a virus. If you don’t recognize the brand, ignore the findings. That notification may be a virus itself, Garbus says. • Install firewall protection. Make sure your hardware and software are protected with firewalls and software that scans the environment for worms, harmful attachments and attacks. • Set up procedures and protocols for data access. It’s important to make sure access to data is limited. For example, the system administrator role should be handed out to a limited number of employees who should not share log-in information with each other. Also, when an employee leaves, make sure their access is taken away and passwords changed. • Have backups of all important data. If you have your information backed up in an offsite location, then you won’t lose it to cyber kidnappers. “Whether it’s large companies or small businesses, too often people forget to back up their

Franciscan Health Seeks to Raise Awareness of Prediabetes A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finds that 84 million American adults (more than 1 in 3) have prediabetes, a condition in which blood glucose (sugar) levels are high, but not high enough yet to be classified as type 2 diabetes. People with prediabetes have increased risks to their long-term health, including developing type 2 diabetes, heart attack, and stroke. Nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes are not aware they have the condition. In Indiana 6.9 out of every 100 people have prediabetes, ranking it 18th highest in the nation for the ratio of people with diabetes to the general population. The American Diabetes Association (ADA), American Medical Association (AMA), and CDC, along with the Ad Council, are releasing new public service announcements (PSAs) to build on a successful campaign that helped hundreds of thousands of Americans learn their risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The new, lighthearted PSAs offer viewers a “perfect way to spend a minute” where they can take the one-minute prediabetes risk test while also doing something everyone loves—watching adorable animal videos. Franciscan Health is proud to lend its support to the campaign, which raises the urgency of prediabetes and emphasizes the positive message that prediabetes can often be reversed through everyday lifestyle changes. The campaign encourages people to take a short online test at DoIHavePrediabetes.org to learn their risk and speak with their doctor to confirm their diagnosis.
