Thornton Township Provides Holiday Food and Fellowship to Nearly 1,000 she plans to continue volunteering and will be seeking additional opportunities to help wherever she can. This was also the first year for Carolyn Brown and her 13 year-old son Andrew. “I was looking for a positive program for him to participate in and to help our community,” she said. Sisters Jessie Monroe and Maxine Jefferson are regular volunteers helping out at all township events. “I love what I do. The township can always depend on us to be there,” Maxine Jefferson said. Overflow Ministries, operated through the Korean United Methodist Church in Flossmoor, has been participating in the event for three years. John Harvey, missions’ coordinator, became aware of the event through Township Clerk Jacki Rivera. “We worked together doing mission work in the Harvey area for several years. This is just another way for our ministry to lend a hand,” he said. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli greeted guests and said he was pleased to see everyone celebrating the holiday season together. “This is a nice community event where we can get to know each other and show that we care for one another. When we share a meal and talk to each other we learn that we all care about the same things,” he said. “This is a wonderful way to get to know your neighbors, meet someone new, and
make a new friend or two. We live in a great community—we don’t dwell on the negative, we talk about the good in our community. There is no place better to live than Thornton Township. The more we get to know each other and work together the stronger our community becomes.” Those attending came with family and friends. Sisters Stacey and Stephanie Keller of Hazel Crest invited their friends Leonard and Terry Wisniewski of Oak Forest to attend the dinner. Stacey and Stephanie first learned of the dinner while attending South Suburban College. “This is our fourth year here. We love socializing with new people of all ages and backgrounds and enjoying a great meal and entertainment,” Stacey Keller said. “It is just wonderful to see people you haven’t seen in a year, talk with new people, and make new friends. I love the food and entertainment,” said South Holland resident Alice Coward who attended with her daughter Cindy and granddaughter Sydney. “This is also a wonderful event that gives seniors the opportunity to socialize so they don’t feel so isolated. Many have difficulty getting out and the township helps bring them here. This is one of the best events the township offers.”

By Cindy Cruz They came from throughout the south suburbs, Northwest Indiana and Chicago to enjoy food and fellowship at the 17th Annual Holiday Dinner sponsored by Thornton Township and held at South Suburban College on December 8. Originally started as a dinner to feed the homeless and those in need, the event was expanded as a way to unite the community. Nearly 1,000 people enjoyed a traditional holiday dinner provided by Jimbooos. Those in attendance also had the opportunity to win gift cards and 400 turkeys donated by individuals, community groups, local churches, area businesses and local officials. Performing at this year’s event were the Elite Praise Dance Ministry from Holy Bible Church in Harvey and the Past Life Band. Ninety five volunteers assisted with this year’s event doing setup, registration and serving the meal. For all of them participating in the event is a labor of love. This was the first year for Rita Culbreath from South Holland. “I am very excited to be here,” she said, “I was looking for volunteer opportunities so I went to the village hall and was directed to Thornton Township. I feel it is important to give back to the community,” she added. Culbreath said

By Patricia Muhammad Kwesi Bryant, a senior and an International Baccalaureate student at Thornwood High School was well received during his poetry recitiation at the pre-performance segment of Hamilton, held Dec. 13. Bryant received the Hamilton opportunity after submitting a poem to the Hamilton Education program titled “Boston Tear Party.” Hamilton is an American musical produced by Lin-Manuel Miranda that tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, a Founding Father, who fought to win independence against the British. Through modern rap, hip-hop dance, and songs the play comes alive with high impact singing and dancing. The play highlights the American Revolution, which lasted from 1765 to 1783, which led to the American Patriots winning independence from Britain. The United States of American were formed from the original thirteen British colonies. After his performance, Bryant spoke of being on the Hamilton stage. He said, “It was great, and I have never done it before. I had nerves beforehand, but when I got on stage, it all went away. I already knew a little bit about the Boston Tea Party, and I just stuck with it.” Teachers Jason Mcconnell, Andrea Young and Jennifer Mcculloch assisted in organizing the trip for those students selected to attend the Hamilton play. Mcconnell, a Special Ed teacher, said, “I was really excited for all of the performers and I think it was also exciting for the student performers to see

other students like themselves performing on stage.” More than 1,200 students across the greater Chicagoland area including Flint, Michigan, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin filled the downtown Chicago CIBC Theatre to see the Hamilton Broadway smash hit. The Rockefeller Foundation, Gilder Lehrman and School District 205 sponsored the Hamilton trip for the Thornwood students. A Thornwood student commented on Bryant’s performance: “I was excited to see Kwesi perform live. His poems are always beautiful and so detailed, you can visualize them as he speaks. He is a great addition to the Hamilton pre-performance,” said Alexia Cunningham. After Bryant was selected to represent his school, more than 90 students from Thornwood High were given tickets to attend the pre-performance, and students later attended the nearly three-hour Broadway show. Jennifer Mcculloch, an International Baccalaureate Spanish Teacher at Thornwood, said, “I encouraged Kwesi to submit his best work for the Hamilton pre-performance. I have observed him to be a talented poet, and knew that if he worked with Mrs. Brucki (his poetry coach here), he would be excellent. We are very proud of his accomplishments,” she continued. “His original piece was all his work and talent. There was an opportunity for all students to submit work for the event; however his performance and style stood out, and that is how he was selected.”

During a visit to Bishop Noll Dec. 12, Patrick Verhiley, director of recruiting and marketing San Damiano Scholars at Marian, surprised her with the good news. Recipients of this honor must be academically inquisitive/ sharp, open to God and others, seeking a community of like-minded peers, and deeply committed to servant leadership within their school, church, and community, he said. “Jackie certainly is deserving of this scholarship for all her service and leadership within her school, community, parish, and diocese,” said Verhiley. Jania, of Highland, is involved in many activities and sports at Noll including swimming, band, tennis, cross country, Writing Club, Multicultural Club, Student Council, Campus Ministry and Academic Super Bowl. In addition, she serves as a Student Ambassador. She is also involved with Our Lady of Grace’s Youth Group, Diocesan Youth Council, and Girl Scouts.

She became a Girl Representative to the Board for the Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana earlier this school year. She is also in the process of completing the Gold Award for Girl Scouts. Upon learning she received the scholarship, Jania said she was speechless. “Ever since the interview process I had been not-so-patiently waiting for the final decision. I was checking my mail almost every day for the outcome. But it was the best surprise in the end and I was so happy I found out the way that I did.” Jania is excited to attend Marian University, saying it is the best mix of everything she was looking for in a college. “I liked the location, the community, the size, and the classes I would be taking for my major—public health with a minor in pastoral leadership and global studies.” She is excited to have a major tied with the San Damiano Program. “I am so passionate about public health and the role it plays in the world. At the same time I am ready to meet new people from the program and reconnect with the ones I have already met during the journey to becoming a San Damiano Scholar.” Jania said many Noll teachers imparted lessons she will take with her wherever she goes in life. “Mrs. Albrecht and Mrs. Laird taught me that your voice is important because it is a part of who you are. Mr. Cavazos and Ms. Schmidt helped me understand how important it is to never stop learning about the world we live in. I could name a billion more things about how teachers in this school have influenced my life,” she said.

SHBA’s Annual Christmas Party Was “Tops” for Holiday Fun
Pictured are Felicia Houston of Ingall’s Hospital (left), Mike Abbott of Abbott’s Printing (center), and Stephanie Walters of Blue Top Marketing. ______________________________________
Thursday, December 14th the South Holland Business Association (SHBA) celebrated the season with a Christmas party at Glenwoodie Golf Course’s beautiful clubhouse in Glenwood, IL. Holiday hats were the prescribed headwear, and people roamed the room, snapping pictures of the most colorful, creative, and outrageous toppers. What could be a more clever incentive to mingle and meet? Prizes were awarded for the best men’s and best women’s hats, won by Brian Tennis of South Suburban Memorials for his lighted deer jingle hat, and Shawna Barbush of Sandrick law firm for her tall lighted Christmas tree hat. A delicious family-style lunch was served, again encouraging lots of interaction as guests passed the dishes of fried chicken, burgundy beef, potatoes and mixed roasted vegetables. Numerous door prizes, donated by the members, livened the atmosphere. In participation with Thornton Township’s annual toy drive, members brought unwrapped toys and games to be given to needy families this Christmas. SHBA awarded this year’s service award to Alexandra Glumac. This year’s beautification awards went to Kirk’s Barbeque and Service King. Congratulations, winners!
Holiday headgear was the look for the SHBA Christmas Party. Shawna Barbush of Sandrick law firm (right, standing) won the prize for best women’s holiday hat for her lighted Christmas tree hat. ______________________________________

Turn of Phrase: “Hit the Sack” or “Hit the Hay”—meaning to go to bed—dates back to at least 1825, when mattresses were essentially large bags of straw or hay. After a long day of hard work, a person would fall into bed with exhaustion, literally hitting the sack. MIKE BUDER In my first year in the real estate business (early 80’s) a young couple wanting to buy their first home walked into our office looking for an agent to help them. That was my floor time day, so I was happy to talk with them. They looked and seemed young—and they were—not even twenty yet. They were expecting their first baby and were such a nice young couple. The young man was such an earnest guy wanting to find a home for his wife and soon to be first child. We talked for sometime and it was clear to me they couldn’t afford much. Our normal sale at that time was between $40,000 and $60,000 and I knew they were not going to be able to afford anything in our local market. They loved the area but it just wasn’t possible by a long shot. But I didn’t want to burst their bubble at that point because maybe they had some folks that could help them out. I set the young couple up with a lender to get qualified and suggested that they call me once they knew what their budget was going to be. Several days later the earnest young man called me back and was proud as he could be to say they could afford to buy a home around $15,000. I had no idea where to find a home in that price range in our area since it just didn’t exist in our market. The young man said he drove by a home in a mobile home park some miles away and saw a home priced at $14,000, could they see it today? I was a bit taken back as I’d never sold a mobile home before and wasn’t at all sure what that was all about. I took a moment to talk with my broker (my Dad at the time) and he assured me we could handle a mobile home sale. So off I went to

look at this tiny home with the couple! They fell in love with it and saw it as their first castle! I remember thinking, “How cool is this!” We wrote up a contract on the spot and proceeded to move forward. But… all heck broke loose as it wasn’t so easy to find financing for a mobile home of this size and age. Somehow we made it all come together. This young couple was so grateful to have someone care enough to see it through with them. Over the years, this couple has bought and sold many homes and referred other clients to me. On the day we closed, I became so aware that it didn’t matter so much the price of the home, but rather helping a truly sincere couple find their “dream home.” It was a big gift to both of us. To this day I’ve never run across quite another scenario like this one but I’ve never forgotten it. As our local market took a dive from 2007 ’til 2014, I’ve been able to help many folks through some pretty tough times, and I’m glad that I could regardless of whether or not the big checks followed at the closings. I knew I had the skill and experience to help folks in need, and honestly I have been personally blessed and am thankful for each and every deal. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My home has been on the market for 8 months now with no offers. My home needs some updating, but I know it is worth what I am asking for it. I have had few showings. Any suggestions? Answer: It’s been 53 weeks since my house went for sale. My home must be invisible here on Timberline Trail. Buyers should be coming round after round, Because I buried St. Joseph into the ground. The Realtor said it needs some cleaning and shining. And to transfer my energy to updating, not whining. I’m changing some fixtures and adding new floors, In hopes to see more buyers come through those ‘new’ doors. My plan must be working, more buyers are here. I can feel it coming, a sale is near. But another month passed, with no offer in sight, That light in the tunnel is not looking too bright.

The Realtor said to lower the price. Then I told him my thoughts, which weren’t very nice. I’ll give it some thought, I disgustingly said, As he left my home, shaking his head. My house is worth more, I’ve lived here for years. So many memories, blood, sweat and tears. But I lowered my price, just as I was told. And a few days later, my home finally sold. Physicians can now renew their patient’s disability placards online via the Secretary of State office’s website, making Illinois the second state in the nation to provide this vital service to persons with disabilities. Persons with disabilities are required to renew their permanent disability parking placards every four years. Prior to the new online renewal program, applicants were required to visit their physician to request a new permanent disability parking placard. The physician would complete the renewal form after confirming the individual’s medical eligibility, then mail the form to the Secretary of State’s office in Springfield to be reviewed before a new placard was issued and mailed to the applicant. Under the new system, when it’s time to renew, the Secretary of State’s office will send a renewal certification form to the authorized holder of permanent disability placard approximately three months prior to the expiration date. The holder then takes the form to their physician, who submits the patient’s information online at www.cyberdriveillionis.com. The certification form is submitted instantly to the Secretary of State’s office. Following approval, their updated placard will be mailed. The electronic application cannot be used by those renewing red temporary parking placards, or by parents or guardians renewing on behalf of a child with a disability. These requests must continue to be made using the paper application process.

Three Tips to Reduce Holiday Stress and Preserve Marital Bliss The holidays arrive and with them come those endless lists of gifts to buy, decorations to put up and parties to attend. Meeting all the demands can place a lot of stress on a married couple’s relationship, but it doesn’t need to be that way. “We all want our holidays to be magical and perfect, but the reality doesn’t always meet the expectations,” says Dr. Tim R. Thayne, a marriage and family therapist and author of Not by Chance: How Parents Boost Their Teen’s Success In and After Treatment. “But that’s OK. One of the most important things couples need to remember this time of year is that you don’t have to live up to everyone else’s expectations and you don’t even have to keep doing everything you did in holidays past.” Thayne offers a few tips to couples to help keep the stress level low and marital bliss on track through the hectic holiday season: • Hold a holiday powwow. No one wants the frustrating experience of parental shock when one parent buys a child an unexpected gift that is way over budget. The resulting tension can put a damper on the sweetness of the experience
for everyone. Thayne says you can avoid this by scheduling a holiday planning session to brainstorm gift ideas, work out budgets, and review letters to Santa or teenage wish lists. “Because you were raised in different families, you may have different ideas about what Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas morning, or New Year’s Eve festivities should look like,” Thayne says. “You can avoid conflict by setting expectations early for how many events you’ll attend, whether you’ll take the kids, how much you plan to spend on each other, or what houseguests you’ll allow to stay over.” • Write a decline script. If you feel relieved when the holidays are over, you probably are guilty of overbooking yourself. “Write and then practice a script for politely turning down invitations for yet another holiday party, ice skating with the baseball team, or a performing arts event,” Thayne says. “Realize and commit to memory that mantra that the quality of an event is far better than quantity.” Your decline script could be something like: “That sounds like a wonderful opportunity. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to attend. I’m sure it will come off beautifully.”
• Know that not all traditions need to live on. Family circumstances and needs change, Thayne says. Holiday traditions might have their place for a time, but as children grow, you may be able to swap out the childhood fun of everyone-sleeps-in-the-same-room-on-Christmas-Eve tradition for the benefits of the teenagers getting a good night’s rest instead. Anyone can add shiny, fun things into their life. It takes determination to evaluate and edit. “So, make the traditions you do decide to continue even better,” Thayne says. “How? Find a way to make them more relationship-focused.” “A scaled-down holiday may be just what a couple needs to keep the season relaxed and joyful,” Thayne says. “It may just take a little planning, compromising, as well as a willingness to let go of a few traditions, to make it happen.” Dr. Tim R. Financial Advice Column
Time to Review Your Investment Strategy for the Year BOB KRYGSHELD As the year draws to a close, it’s a good time to review your progress toward your financial goals. But on what areas should you focus your attention? Of course, you may immediately think about whether your investments have done well. When evaluating the performance of their investments for a given year, many people mistakenly think their portfolios should have done just as well as a common market index, such as the Standard & Poor’s 500. But the S&P 500 is essentially a measure of large-company, domestic stocks, and your portfolio probably doesn’t look like that—nor should it, because it’s important to own an investment mix that aligns with your goals, risk tolerance and return objectives. It’s this return objective that you should evaluate over time—not the return of an arbitrary benchmark that isn’t personalized to your goals and risk tolerance. Your return objective will likely evolve. If you are starting out in your career, you may need your portfolio to be oriented primarily toward growth, which means it may need to be more heavily weighted toward stocks. But if you are retiring in a few years, you may need a more balanced allocation between stocks and bonds, which can address your needs for growth and income. So, assuming you have created a long-term investment strategy that has a target rate of return for each year, you can review your progress accordingly. If you matched or exceeded that rate this past year, you’re staying on track, but if your return fell short of your desired target, you may need to make some changes. Before doing so, though, you need to understand just why your

return was lower than anticipated. For example, if you owned some stocks that underperformed due to unusual circumstances you may not need to be overly concerned, especially if the fundamentals of the stocks are still sound. On the other hand, if you own some investments that have underperformed for several years, you may need to consider selling them and using the proceeds to explore new investment opportunities. Investment performance isn’t the only thing you should consider when looking at your financial picture over this past year. What changed in your life? Did you welcome a new child to your family? If so, you may need to respond by increasing your life insurance coverage or opening a college savings account. Did you or your spouse change jobs? You may now have access to a new employer-sponsored retirement account, such as a 401(k), so you’ll need to decide how much money to put into the various investments within this plan. And one change certainly happened this past year: You moved one year closer to retirement. By itself, this may cause you to re-evaluate how much risk you’re willing to tolerate in your investment portfolio, especially if you are within a few years of your planned retirement. Whether it is the performance of your portfolio or changes in your life, you will find that you always have some reasons to look back at your investment and financial strategies for one year—and to look ahead at moves you can make for the next. BRANDI SMITS Me and Marvin Gardens By Amy Sarig King The spacious farmland complete with its own creek has been in the Devlin family for generations. Unfortunately, the Devlin land has been sold off to developers piece by piece. Now the Devlin land is less open farm fields and more subdivisions. It’s sad for Obe to see his favorite place change so swiftly. Especially since one of the side effects to all the new neighbors is a polluted creek. Just about every day Obe goes down to the creek to pick up the trash that has collected on the banks. He will continue to take pride in his land, even if no one else will. One day while Obe was picking up litter, he discovered a very odd creature. It’s not quite a dog and not really a wild pig. Obe is excited that he discovered a unique animal and begins to do some research in order to identify it. He decides to name it Marvin Gardens after the property from Monopoly, a game his father insists they play regularly. Aside from its odd physical characteristics, the creature also has strange eating habits. Marvin Gardens eats plastic. There are some plastics that are more appealing than others, but Marvin Gardens

seems to be doing his own version of picking up the trash. The situation takes a bad turn when Obe notices that Marvin Gardens’ droppings seem to be some kind of toxic waste that destroys the ground around them. Obe knows that he must keep this a secret until he can figure out what Marvin Gardens really is. But on top of his plastic-consuming secret, Obe struggles with the average kid issues, like failing math and watching his former best friend now hang out with the school bullies. Can Obe continue to protect the Devlin land as well as all the creatures that call it home? King’s first journey from teen books to middle grade novels is successful. Despite being completely fictional, the creation of Marvin Gardens feels true, like you’ll find one yourself if you look hard enough. King includes short family histories in between chapters which dig a bit deeper into the reason that the Devlin land is now a collection of subdivisions, which is a nice inclusion. Me and Marvin Gardens has a similar yet lighter feel about it as the TV show Stranger Things, although fortunately Marvin Gardens is not planning of killing anyone...that we know of.

Saved Polish Couple $180 WOODROW WILCOX On November 9, 2017, an agent at our office in Merrillville escorted a couple to my office so that I could help them with a Medicare related medical bill problem. I was delighted to learn that the couple spoke Russian and German, too. So, I spoke with them in Russian and German as much as I could. I’ve forgotten much of those languages that I used to know much better. The wife had gone to a hospital and used a Medicare Advantage policy which our agency had sold to her. With that policy, she was responsible for a $75 emergency room co-pay. She knew that. But, she received a bill from the hospital for $180 more than the $75 co-pay. The couple wanted to know why. I phoned the insurance company and questioned the matter. The representative said something which raised my suspicion that the claim had been processed incorrectly. So, I asked to speak to a supervisor. In my discussion of the claim, I explained why I believed the claim was processed incorrectly. From the conversation that I had with the first representative, I suspected that the rules of a Medicare supplement policy had been applied instead of the rules of a Medicare

Advantage policy. The two types of policies have different procedures and rules. I believed that someone at the claims department of the insurance company was new, tired, or distracted and made a mistake when the claim was processed. I was correct. The supervisor reviewed the matter with me and realized that I was correct. He ordered the claim to be reprocessed correctly and for a letter of apology to be sent to our client for the mistake. I saved our client $180. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud to have a reputation for “going the extra mile” to help our clients in such Medicare related medical bill problems. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of service to senior citizen clients, then I suggest that you switch to our agency. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that agency over one million dollars. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Brown trout are one of the three main species of trout living in Lake Michigan: brown trout, lake trout and rainbow trout (steelhead). During the winter and early spring months when the weather is cold, brown trout are one of the easiest of the three species to catch out on the big lake. That’s not to say brown trout are easy to catch, though; especially big brown trout. Large brown trout are wary and wily, and sometimes the biggest individuals only seem to feed under cover of darkness when most fishermen are in bed. Typical brown trout weigh 2-4 pounds, but the big ones can weigh 10-20 pounds or more! Lake Michigan brown trout are usually silver-colored and are not brown at all. Like most Great Lakes trout and salmon, brown trout have silvery sides and a white belly, and their sides are marked with many black spots. The only time they are brown in color is during spawning season or if they happen to be living in a creek or river which empties into Lake Michigan.

Brown trout are very efficient predators, and once they reach several inches in size their diet consists mainly of other fish. Alewives, shad, smelt, shiners, gobies, baby perch and other small fish are all on the menu for hungry brown trout. So if you are interested in fishing for brown trout, use a bait that looks like a small fish! Happy fishing!

GOD WITH US
The Wonder of Christmas ANNA M. CAISON While pondering what God would have me write about Christmas, I was drawn to a passage of scripture that led me to see another aspect of the Christmas Story that is often overlooked during the holiday season. The world has always considered a person to be valuable to society if he is wealthy, head of a corporation, politically savvy, and of course, born of “acceptable” ancestry. The poor, under educated, the disabled and those of “unacceptable” ancestry were considered worthless and expendable. But listen to what the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (AMP Bible): “But God has selected (for His purpose) the foolish things of the world to shame the wise (revealing their ignorance), and God has selected (for His purpose) the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong (revealing their frailty). God has selected (for His purpose) the insignificant (base) things of the world, and the things that are despised and treated with contempt, (even) the things that are nothing, so that He might reduce to nothing the things that are, so that no one may (be able to) boast in the presence of God.” When I looked at Christmas through the lens of the above verses, I became overwhelmed with awe and wonder at

Christ’s incarnation into humanity, because His story included my story and others like me who didn’t make the world’s top ten list. When the LORD became man, He didn’t choose a family of wealth, privilege and prominence. He selected instead an obscure, insignificant family on the fringes of poverty. Our salvation did not come through government policy. It came through the birth of a baby, of Jewish descent; a not so favored minority of the Roman Empire. Throughout Christ’s earthly ministry He chose men and women that society deemed worthless, weak, and inferior to proclaim the power of God by making them recipients of His love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and power to overcome every situation they face. Following His resurrection, He commissioned them to be His ambassadors, to lead others to Him through the preaching of the cross—which to the arrogant is a stumbling block, and to the affluent, foolishness. But to those who receive it, it is the wisdom, wonder, and power of God. Merry Christmas!!! For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

M I K E C AV O T O H O S T S A N N U A L CHRISTMAS PARTY AT BINYON’S STEAK HOUSE: For at least the past 15 years, Senior Mortgage Ba nker Mike Cavoto of American Portfolio Mortgage hosted Brokers and friends from Coldwell Banker, ReMax, Rossi and Rossi, Crosstown and ot hers for his a nnua l bash ! They a re pictured here surrounding Mike, seated, in the center of the beautiful Binyon’s Stea k House. Mi ke is or ig ina l ly f rom Dolton, Illinois and after many requests, loves to entertain his friends with stories about his growing up in the south suburb, graduating from Thornridge High School, attending college and making his way through the mortgage industry. He has much in common with the Brokers present as most of them also came from the south suburbs. ***
FOR D MOTOR S E X ECU T I V E GUEST SPE A K E R AT C A IC 5 0 T H A N N UA L LUNCHEON: The Calumet Area Industrial Commission has risen in prominence dramatically over the past several years, especially since President Ted Stalnos took over the reins. The business organization now has more than 150 members in the City of Chicago, Southern Cook County, a n d No r t h w e s t I n d i a n a . T h e 5 0 t h annual luncheon was held at the Beverly Count r y Club, December 8, 2017 a nd featured John F. Kwant, Vice-President, City Solutions Ford Smart Mobility LLC. Just as Walt Disney designed “Tomorrow Land” for Disney World in t he 1950’s, Ford Motor Company is planning the city and transportation of the future w ith an emphasis on moving as many people as possible in the least possible space,
RICHARD ZEKVELD “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go, I will go, and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.” Ruth 1:16-17, NIV With this moving declaration, Ruth bound herself to her mother-in-law, the bitter Naomi. She also bound herself to Naomi’s God. She trusted in him. She offered herself to him and Naomi for sacrificial service. So the adventure began. God blessed Ruth and used her in ways she couldn’t have imagined! He protected and provided for Ruth and Naomi through a good and kind man named Boaz, who married Ruth. God
used Ruth and Boaz together to restore the bitter, broken Naomi. And God was just getting started. This story takes place “in the days when the judges ruled” (Ruth 1:1a), an ugly time when “Israel had no king; everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). But God used Ruth and Boaz to raise up a redeemer for sinful, stubborn Israel. His name is the last word recorded in the Ruth story (Ruth 4:22). Check it out. His name points to his greater descendant, the ultimate Redeemer God raised up for us through Ruth and Boaz. “You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). This Christmas, trust in the God of Ruth. Trust in the Redeemer descended from her. Offer yourself, like Ruth, in loving service to God and others. You never know how God will bless and use you! Richard Zekveld, Pastor, Covenant Fellowship Church

Post Commander Mike Steel promises more fun to come in 2018! *** MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL AND THE R E A SON FOR T H E SE A SON : A s w e all surrender to the holiday madness of decorating the tree and house, shopping for the perfect gift for our loved ones and worr y about overspending--I’m going to take a breath and think about what is really important this December 25th. I think of the Baby in the Manger and His parents who traveled far and w ide to escape a vengeful king. Who found refuge in a humble dwelling with farm animals, and caused the constellations to point to His exact location. How many babies can do that? I also think of my own family my husband and my son and grandchildren and how grateful I am that they are in my life. I think of my friends and colleagues and co-workers each who celebrate in their own way and I say a prayer that they too appreciate why they are celebrating. I think of the kindness shown to the less fortunate in the food pantry and toy drives hosted by community organizations and I pray that He sees that we are not all Macy’s windows and credit cards. Most of all that you and yours have a wonderful Christmas filled w ith dear hearts and gentle people and answered prayers.

thereby leaving cities (and people) with more breathing space. Kwant presented to CAIC members and guests Ford’s concept of partnering with municipalities to help bring the “City of Tomorrow” to life by identifying key urban mobility needs and developing and implementing solutions in cities worldwide. Kwant summed it all up by outlining what a city needs to move people and goods more efficiently. The discussion must focus on a wide range of issues facing cities, from modernizing p o w e r g r i d s t o i m p l e m e nt i n g n e w technology such as autonomous vehicles. Much of Kwant’s overview took place in densely populated countries like Japan and China, but showed how this concept would work anywhere in the world. Also on the agenda that day was the Kenneth L. Brace Memorial Award presented to CRRC Sifang and the CAIC Chairman’s Award presented to Michele Netherton, Ingalls Occupational Health, Lansing, IL. Michele is current VP and Past CAIC Chairman and helped usher in U Chicago Medicine at Ingalls Memorial. Pictured here are 10th Ward A lder woman Sue Sadlowski Garza and Tom DuBois.
