Thornton Township High School District 205 is now celebrating the 2nd year of success at the Outlook Academy. This academy is housed at Chicago State University and offers young adults the opportunity to obtain a high school diploma originating from Thornton, Thornridge and Thornwood High Schools. The Board of Education together with Chicago State University has taken this vision from concept to reality. A partnership was formed to provide post-high school students ages 17-21 with a pathway to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. This partnership provides students with “one stop” access to both a high school diploma, as well as an option to continue their education at Chicago State or other colleges and universities. Realizing that not every student will continue on to higher education, this program also offers both career and workforce development. Brett Fickes and Patricia Fortier of District 205 were instrumental in establishing this program with Chicago State University, and also obtaining the necessary funding from the federal Government and the State of Illinois. There are now over 200 students enrolled in this program that is changing lives across the region!

What Can Investors Learn from the All Stars? BOB KRYGSHELD The 2017 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, baseball fans will admire the skills and grace of the players. And if you’re an investor, you can learn some valuable lessons from the All Stars, including these: Alertness – Most of us can only dream of having the outstanding reflexes of major league ballplayers. But we can develop a similar trait: alertness. You should be vigilant about investment opportunities and the potential need to make changes to your portfolio. For instance, you might realize that, over time, your portfolio has become too top-heavy with the same types of investments. Since these investments are likely to move in the same direction at the same time, you could take a big hit during a market downturn. Consequently, you may want to diversify among a wider range of vehicles, including stocks, bonds, government securities and others. While this type of diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses, it can help you reduce the effects of volatility on your portfolio. • Patience – When you watch the best hitters you will notice that most of them are very patient, willing to wait for several pitches until they get the one they feel they can hit. As an investor, you, too, need patience. The investment world contains many myths, one of which is that it’s possible to get rich quick by finding “hot” stocks when they’re cheap

and selling them after a meteoric rise. But these events are actually pretty rare. The most successful investors are typically the ones who invest steadily, through good markets and bad ones, and who follow a long-term strategy appropriate for their needs, goals and risk tolerance. • Preparation – During the All-Star Game the ballplayers will know exactly what to do in almost any given situation. To take one example, consider what happens when a runner is on first base and the batter hits a ground ball to the shortstop. Almost without thinking – because he’s already prepared for this very scenario – the shortstop will flip the ball to the second baseman, who is already standing on the bag. The second basemen completes the double play by immediately throwing to the first baseman, who is also in the right place. When you invest, you also need to be prepared for certain situations and how you’ll respond. When your children head off to college, you should know if and how you’ll help them pay for it, maybe because you’ve prepared by saving in a college-savings vehicle. When the day comes for you to retire, you should know how you’d like to tap into your retirement accounts. By being alert, showing patience and preparing for your goals, you can put some of the All-Stars’ skills to work when you invest — and by doing so, you might improve your personal “box score.”

Thornton Township Hosts Free Property Tax Assessment & Property Transfer Workshop Thornton Township is hosting a free property tax assessment and property after death workshop at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15. In addition, residents can learn how you can transfer their home, car, and bank account to loves ones for free without the need for a will, trust, legal fees or thousands of dollars in court costs. “It’s important for our residents to be knowledgeable about their property tax assessments and know how to appeal if necessary,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “At Thornton Township, we have a dedicated assessor’s office that every day works with our residents to ensure that the taxpayer’s property is assessed fairly and accurately, and that they receive the best outcome for themselves and their families.” The Thornton Township Assessor’s Office schedule meetings throughout the year to explain the taxing process, how tax bills are calculated, the valuing of property, any updates in the filing of appeals, and provide detailed information regarding tax exemptions. Representatives from other governmental agencies, such as, the Cook County Assessor’s Office, Recorder of Deeds, and the Board of Review have supported our forums in providing valuable information on

Public Comment Sought for Indiana’s Plan to Implement the Every Student Succeeds Act The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) announced today the public comment period for the first draft Indiana’s plan to fulfill the new federal education requirements, known as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), is now open. The public comment period will stay open though 11:59 P.M. (ET) on July 20, 2017. ESSA was signed into law in December 2015 as the update to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. ESSA replaces the previous update to the law, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). While ESSA mirrors NCLB in that ESSA holds states accountable for high standards, maintains state accountability systems, requires annual tests in grades 3-8 and in high school, and sustains support for struggling schools and development of teachers, ESSA also allows for more state input and direction. Through ESSA, states can determine how they want to reach each of these policy goals and have more local control in crafting their approach. IDOE began crafting Indiana’s ESSA plan through a series of meetings held across the state. Through those meetings, IDOE gathered input and recommendations from educators, administrators, parents, community members, and local leaders. The input and recommendations were then compiled into a community meeting report which helped guide Indiana’s first ESSA draft. Public comment is being gathered through six online surveys. Each survey corresponds with a specific section of the ESSA draft. Indiana’s ESSA draft and public comment surveys can be found at: http://www.doe.in.gov/essa.

GOD WITH US

A Reminder of our Glorious Future

page

Fall Registration is In Progress at South Suburban College

ANNA M. CAISON The scene outside my bedroom window reminds me of the glorious future God has for those who love Him. There are two trees parallel to each other. Between the two trees is a paved walkway that leads outside the apartment complex I live in. Each day that I go to my mailbox I take the path that runs between the two trees (tenant mailboxes are outside of each building). And with each return trip from the mailbox as I walk between the two trees I see a glimpse of what the Apostle John wrote about in Revelation 22:1-4. The paved walkway transforms into the crystal river that flows from the throne of God and the trees, with their overflowing branches, becomes the tree of life covered with lush green leaves for the healing of the nations. In that day, there will be no need for sunlight or lamps because darkness (physical and spiritual) will no longer exist because of the visible reigning presence of the LORD. There are days when the condition of the world becomes overbearing and I feel like I can’t take another day. I close my eyes and For sale: Refrigerators (big & small), washing machines, bedroom fur niture, dining room f u r n i t u re. envision myself splashing in the crystal river that John saw and wrote about. I then act as if I’m there! I begin jumping and splashing in the crystal river and worshiping God until the issues that brought me there are no longer weighing me down. With a refreshed spirit and a renewed mind, I can work through whatever difficulties I’m facing with faith, hope and victory. Some, reading this article, are probably laughing as did a few parishioners when I demonstrated this form of meditation from the pulpit. But I challenge you, the next time you find yourself backed into a wall of despair, close your eyes and with child-like faith imagine yourself splashing in the crystal river. Take a leaf from the tree of life and rub it over your face and begin worshiping the Lord. In His presence you will find the peace and tenacity to move forward in this life with victory. celebrations on July 4th at Veterans Park. Many people were dressed in red-white-and-blue outfits, including funny hats and coordinating jewelry. Among the many experiences to be had were bouncy houses, slides, a pie eating contest, a hot dog eating contest, dancing, rock climbing, face painting, balloon animals, clowns, a foam pit, train rides, and rib fest. The police

had a truck on display at Veteran’s Park that visitors could walk through, and firefighters gave out red fire hats to kids. There were bands playing live music. And there was lots of yummy food including hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, nachos, and ribs. Here are just a few photos of the participants enjoying the activities and celebrations.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

A Good CMA MIKE BUDER When a Realtor comes to your home for a listing appointment, the crux of activity is centered around what we in the industry refer to as the Comparative Market Analysis (CMA). To the inexperienced sellers out there, here’s a brief overview of how a CMA works…It’s your home versus every other comparable property in the immediate area! This is how we, as agents, help our sellers establish a realistic asking price. Recently sold listings, expired listings, and active listings all need to be taken into account while establishing an acceptable price range. And believe you me, the vast amount of properties on the market today make it necessary to take great care in compiling a “good” CMA. Let’s go over how each listing type affects the CMA: ACTIVE LISTINGS – This is your competition! The idea is to basically attempt to out price your competitors, addressing subtle differences in value between your home and the rest. EXPIRED LISTINGS – Learn from the shortcomings of others! These homes never make it to closing because they were most likely priced incorrectly, though, in some case serious defects may have been present. RECENTLY SOLD LISTINGS – The homes that make it to closings are obviously the

successful ones! Matching these listings as close as possible serves to be a good indicator for how your home will perform in the current market. Note: Pending sales are generally treated like active listings for the simple reason that you just don’t know what offer was accepted, as well as if whether or not the sale will actually close. As a general rule of thumb, Realtors like to stay within a 3-month window for comparable closed sales, we also try to narrow down the list of comparables to a specific map coordinate (usually 1 square mile), only widening the gap when necessary. This keeps the information as relevant as possible. It’s the job of the listing agent to take all these factors into account, in an attempt to find a “happy medium”. Rest assured that with a professional on the job, you won’t be steered in the wrong direction. The CMA is just another step on the road to something big! Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: A friend of mine—honest, I’m not talking about my house—asked me to put her house up for sale on the Internet, twice, and I got a few interested people but nothing serious. She has asked me again to do the same. She lives in a gated resort community and wants $350,000. I just thought you might have some creative ideals for selling this house. She’s going to give me $10,000 if I can sell it and I need the money. I’m also thinking of advertising in a magazine. What do you think? Answer: I think you’re doing a terrible disservice to your friend, and I think you should also look at the real estate laws in your jurisdiction. They will no doubt say that without a real estate broker’s license you have no ability to sue for a real estate commission—thus if you sell the property your friend is not obligated to pay you Battery Back-up Pumps give you peace of mind. We have the best one, the finest we can find. Witvoet Plumbing. 708-331-7335

a dime. Your friend may well be trying to help you, or may honestly think that you have a skill which would allow you to sell the property. But what do you know about real estate contracts? Seller disclosures? Complete Internet exposure? Fair housing requirements? Financing? Pricing? Seller contributions? The list goes on, but the point is this: There’s a lot more to selling real estate than advertising. Without a broker’s license you do not have the right to collect a fee from another for the sale of a property. Worse, you might sell the property for less than it’s worth or you may create unintended liabilities that cost your friend huge amounts of money. Go no further with this until you have spoken with a local—and licensed—attorney.

Summer is here and what’s better than summer and ice cream? Here is a neat recipe to make your own icecream - if you have the craving and the grocery store is closed. Making your own ice cream isn’t so hard. Forget endlessly cranking the handle of an ice-cream maker. After combining the ingredients, you can simply shake up your soft serve ice cream -- and it’s done in just 5 minutes. Ingredients 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup half and half 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup salt (The bigger the granules, the better. Kosher or rock salt works best, but table salt is fine.) Ice cubes (enough to fill each gallon-size bag about half full) 1 pint-size ziplock bag 1 gallon-size ziplock bag Instructions Combine the sugar, half and half, and vanilla extract in the pint-size bag and seal it tightly. Place the salt and ice in the gallon-size bag, then place the sealed smaller bag inside as well. Seal the larger bag. Now shake the bags until the mixture hardens (about 5 minutes). Take the smaller bag out of the larger one, and eat the ice cream right out of the bag. You can add chocolate chips or other favorite candy. It’s easy clean up too!

South Suburban College will be hosting an Open House for its Paralegal Program on Tuesday, August 8, 2017, from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in Room 5190 at the Oak Forest Center. Attendees will learn about an exciting career that is expected to grow 18% through 2020 according to the US Department of Labor. Information will be provided about SSC’s Paralegal/ Legal Assistant curriculum, including the Associate Degree and certificate programs. In addition, former students from the program, working as paralegals, will be present to answer questions. The curriculum prepares students to work in a variety of legal environments including civil and criminal litigation, insurance, banking, public and governmental agencies, law offices and corporate legal departments. Emphasis is placed on the development of core skills in legal research and writing techniques including compilation and analysis of data, understanding legal vocabulary, law office technology, and preparation of legal documents. “Whether you are looking for a change in your career path or looking to begin a career, this is an excellent opportunity for anyone who has an interest in the law,” says Jason Cieslik, J.D., Coordinator for the Legal Studies Program. SSC has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program in the Chicago Southland region, giving graduates a huge advantage when entering the workforce. The college also requires that all of the instructors in the program are lawyers or judges to ensure the quality of instruction. While the majority of the paralegal classes are offered at the Oak Forest Center (conveniently located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue), some classes are offered online and some are offered at the Main Campus in South Holland. For more information, please contact Mr. Jason Cieslik at (708) 596-2000, ext. 2579 or email JCieslik@ssc.edu.

I told the medical service to correct its error and let the claim be processed in the normal way. When that is done, I believe that the entire bill of $256 will be resolved. Thus, I saved the family of the deceased $256. All the help that I gave was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients all the time. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high standard of service to senior citizen clients, maybe you should switch to one that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped seniors save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book Solving Medicare Problem$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

On June 20, 2017, I worked on a case for a client who had just passed away. The family forwarded to me a bill for $256. The family wanted to know if they should pay the bill or not. I reviewed the bill with the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company. What I suspected was true. The medical service provider (or its billing firm) filed the claim incorrectly. The biller should have filed the claim with Medicare. The insurance company never got a claim from Medicare. The bill itself revealed that it had incorrectly filed the claim directly with the secondary (supplemental) insurance company. I wrote a letter to the biller in which I pointed to the obvious errors on the bill and the report of the insurance company. I told the medical biller that since it signed a contract with Medicare, it was obligated to follow Medicare rules and file the claim with Medicare.

CROSSWORD

Engagements, Weddings, Anniversaries, Births, Birthdays, Graduations, and Military announcements are free and run in The Shopper each week. Pictures can be returned; include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Announcements are also accepted by e-mail at general@myshopper. biz. Deadline for all announcements is Friday at 4:00 p.m. for the following Wednesday’s issue. The Shopper reserves the right to edit all content. Turn of Phrase: Hands Down

Originally a horse racing term, to win “hands down” meant the jockey’s hands were in a lowered, relaxed position—implying he was so far ahead, he didn’t need to keep a tight hold on the reins to urge the horse forward.

St. Ann Church and School recently completed an effort to collect enough plastic caps and lids to make a Buddy Bench for the school grounds. It took 500 lbs. of recyclables to create the bench, which they did by working with the ABC (A Bench for Caps) Promise Partnership of Green Tree Plastics in Evansville, IN. Students, their families, and parishioners saved caps and lids for nearly a year, gathering periodically to sort and package them for transport. When 500 lbs. had been amassed, a generous parishioner drove them to Evansville and returned with the new bench that was installed at the top of the parking lot. The idea behind a Buddy Bench is that a lonely child can sit on it at recess time as a signal to others that he or she is looking for a friend. When school isn’t in session, the bench provides a nice resting spot for anyone passing by. St. Ann is a PreK-8th Grade parochial school, open to all. Low Blood Supply Means Donors Needed Now The State of Indiana is reporting a critically low blood supply, which means hospitals lack sufficient supplies to meet patient needs. Lt. Governor Suzanne Crouch put out an appeal, saying “Donors are desperately needed and I am asking for your help, so that together we can rescue our state’s blood supply to bring it back up to a safe level.” She goes on to urge Indianans to give blood—“family members, friends, and all those who are able, including individuals who’ve never donated, to do so now.” People who want to donate can go to one of Indiana Blood Center’s locations. For more information, visit IndianaBloodCenter.org/locations or call 1-800-632-4722.

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD There’s nothing like a glass of cold water from spring-fed well on a hot summer day. I grew up on a farm drinking great water from a great well… until the well caved in. My parents hired a company to drill a new well. The result? Sulfur water. That meant a rotten-egg smell every time we showered, corroded plumbing and boiled drinking water. Ugh! That reminds me of a proverb in the Bible: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23, NIV). We’re not talking about the pump at the center of your body. We’re talking about the control center at the core of your being. Your desires and decisions, motives and mindset, beliefs and behaviors, attitudes and actions, perspectives and patterns, like water from a spring-fed well, flow from the source and driving force at the core of your

being: your heart. We tend to focus on and try to fix the externals: her prickliness at work, the way he acts out at school, my unhealthy habits. But we need to go deeper. “Why do I keep doing this? I really don’t want to!” “What drives him to act out at school?” “What’s the story behind her prickly personality?” We need to be ‘heart smart’. Chest pains? Get your heart checked. Engine light on? Look under the hood. Sulfur water? Go back to the source. I look forward, in this column, to exploring with you what it means to be ‘heart smart’ as we navigate life. And now, a brief tribute to Dr. John Sullivan, a man filled with the love of Jesus, a man whose heart for God and others overflowed, like sweet and satisfying water, to bless and refresh our lives and our community. SU MMERT IME T R E AT—PE ACH ICE CREAM: A Dyer family traveled to South Hol la nd to i ndu lge i n t hei r favor ite dessert--home made peach ice cream f rom Cunis Ca ndies a nd Ice Crea m. Pictured here are Ron and Sharon Gorenz, t heir son Matt and his w ife A manda Gorenz and her daughter Hailey Talbert a long w it h Cu n i s’ propr ietor Ma r y Biesiada and Ron Hoskins. The longtime ice cream parlor is family owned and has been dishing up creamy confections for the better part of last century and this one. The home made peach ice crea m is absolutely delicious! ***

JULY 4TH FESTIVITIES IN FULL SWING: The weather over the 4th of July 2017 dawned bright and beautiful, a perfect setting for parades and events all over the South Land and Northwest Indiana. Pict u red here du r i ng t he W h it i ng, Ind ia na pa rade a re members of t he Southeast Side Vietnam Veterans as they march with their giving flag. In another photo are a Calumet City family, Debbie and Ray Sellers and their grandsons, 7 year old Asher and 5 year old Dillon as they prepare to march in the parade with the SESV V. As always, the popular Whiting Mayor Joe Stahura was the master of ceremonies and marched the whole parade throwing candy to the kids, but the absolute highlight was the White Castle “Crave Mobile” with WC staffers throwing ‘sliders’ to the lucky recipients in the crowd. The parade lasted about two hours, went down Indianapolis to 119th Street through ‘Downtown’ W hiting and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Parade goers had lined up their folding chairs along the parade route the night before--and all the chairs were still in place by the start of the parade ! What a great little Town, Whiting Is! ***

BEECHER CARNIVAL AND FEST BRINGS A CROWD: The June 30th to July 4th Beecher Festival is one of the longest in the area and draws fest goers from all over the Region and south suburbs. Pictured here is Spencer Minton and his daughters Alex, Tina, Julie Anna and Jennifer along with

other family and friends as they wait in line to get on some of the rides. Fresh cooked food, live music, vendors and scary rides made for an enchanting July 4th c elebr at ion, a c c or d i n g t o Jen n i fer Danielle, 11! Even the threat of inclement weather (which actually blew in and out of the fest during two afternoons) failed to dampen the spirits. Everyone just took shelter under the nearby tents and waited out the summer storm. The highlight? A brilliant double rainbow looking south and east after the sky cleared on Sunday July 2nd! Surely a good luck sign! *** A CENTURY OF GRIDIRON GREATNESS! Fr iday Aug u st 25t h, 2017, t he E a st Chicago Cardinals will host the Thornton Fractional South Rebels at 7 p.m. at Pete Rucinski Field. Answer: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) encourages states to develop and operate their own job safety and health programs, and OSHA approves and monitors those plans. Unfortunately, the rules aren’t enough to stem page 24 the number of farming accidents which have held steady while the rates of injury and deaths in other risky industries like construction have dropped. Last year, Illinois led the nation in the number of farming workplace accidents which typically occur when working on or near heavy farm equipment, livestock attacks, through electrocution and suffocation in feed bins. Your best bet is to educate your child about safety issues (http://1.usa. gov/4ANXmq) and talk to his employer about your concerns. If an accident should happen that results in injury, consider contacting an attorney to discuss whether you may have a legal case.
