By Patricia Muhammad From ages 0-99, all birthdays are special, but, I have to say, anyone who has lived beyond 100 years of life is just super awesome. Josephine Gray is one of those special people. Gray, a former Marshall Field employee who worked in the credit and dispute division, will celebrate her 103rd birthday at a party on August 20th, in South Holland. Mrs. Gray was born August 16, 1914, in Chicago. She married Ervin Gray in 1937 and in 1964, her family moved to South Holland. Her five children include Nancy, Dan, Sandy, Bonnie, and Tim. According to Mrs. Gray’s 38-year-old granddaughter, Kristy Olsen, Mrs. Gray was a bookkeeper for her husband’s optometrist practice located in South Holland. “She was great with bookkeeping, and she loved working in the area of finance.” Olsen and her husband have lived with her grandmother since she turned 97, and two years ago the family hired a caregiver, Janet Arendt, to provide day-to-day care for Mrs. Gray. Olsen also stated that her grandmother has a sweet tooth and enjoys a variety of pies, ice cream, and cookies. “My grandmother enjoys eating all types of pies. If you ask her which type of pie is her favorite, she will tell you, ‘they’re all good.’” Mrs. Gray is a life-long member of the Holy Ghost Catholic church located at 700 East 170th Street in South Holland where she is highly involved in church activities. Mrs. Gray was part of a church team who took a missionary trip to Portugal to visit Our Lady of Fatima Catholic church in the late 90s. Having the proper attitude towards life and family is key to longevity. Olsen said of her grandmother, “Through the years

Jo has always kept a spunky attitude and wonderful sense of humor, often making herself laugh so hard at her own wit that the hats she always wears would fall off. Jo has always had a great love for her family and enjoyed telling stories of her family history.” Olsen also added that her grandmother stays active by singing. “She especially enjoys hymns and favorite show tunes. Her favorite song is ‘God Bless America.’ She sings it often as her way of praying for our country.” “For exercise, Jo enjoys being pushed in her wheel chair on walks to tour the neighborhood,” Olsen said. Mrs. Gray’s big day will be complete with family, friends, and well-wishers who will encircle her to wish her yet another wonderful birthday anniversary. According to Olsen, three years ago for her 100th birthday, Mrs. Gray wrote an original prayer which she recited from memory at her 100 year celebration for her 100 guests: One hundred years I have lived on your earth—Thank you, Lord. Five lovely children you gave me to birth—Thank you, Lord. A wonderful man to be by my side, sixteen grandchildren who are my pride, for relatives living and those who have died—Thank you, Lord. For skies that are grey and skies that are blue, for all the wonderful people I knew, For my great grandchildren (there are quite a few!)—Thank you, Lord. For all the things I am still able to do with help from our Blessed Mother and my little Kristy too—Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lord.

District 205 Student Board of Education is Unique in the State

Financial Advice Column

Stay Calm on the Investment “Roller Coaster” BOB KRYGSHELD

Pictured are 14 of the 16 members of the District 205 Student Board of Education. Back row, left-to-right, are Kamryn Nelson, Olukayode Adebogun, Abraham Cruz, Patience Butler Gasper, Sonja Bradley, and Dennis Willis, Jr. Front row, left-to-right are Rebecca Ayiku, Jamiah Glover, Rachel Caldwell, President Motunrola Adebogun, Vice President Kaylynn Arrington, Jada Thomas, Jeremiah Boyd Johnson, and Rafael Camacho, Jr. Not pictured are Nayeli Munoz and Romeo Patrick-Holmes. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

By Erin Nauta On August 8, the District 205 Student Board of Education had their August 2017 meeting. Classes don’t begin until later this month, but the full Board meets every month, even through the summer—because the work of the board is year-round. The District 205 Student Board is unique. Not only is it composed of teenagers, including officers and committee chairs, not only is it 100% student driven, it’s the only body of its kind in the state of Illinois. On the agenda, which follows parliamentary procedure, were reports from all ten (ten!) board committees. These committees meet more often, then bring the results of their work to the full board. Matters to be addressed ranged from restroom repairs to electives to be added to the schools’ curricula; from planned cultural events for enrichment to cafeteria inspections to ensure clean food and facilities. The board really represents the youth of the district. There are 16 board members, enough to get the pulse of the student bodies of all district high schools, whether through face-to-face discussions or through hallway chatter. Students who wouldn’t be bold enough to approach the faculty, staff or adult school board will come to the student board and talk to their peers. In fact, the student board welcomes public participation; anyone is welcome to attend meetings and offer feedback and share opinions. “Our meetings are posted on the Internet and are completely open,” says president Motunrola Adebogun. If it sounds a lot like the work of the regular adult board of education, that’s deliberate: the student board patterns itself on the adult board, dealing directly with the student bodies of the high schools and sending their recommendations up to the adult board. This is not just a group of kids offering a sympathetic ear to fellow students. The student board takes matters brought to them quite seriously, and they follow through. The history of the student board began a decade ago when the District 205 Board of Education had a temporary, short term need to assemble a group of students to provide input regarding planned changes in the high schools. What began as a casual group giving their individual input gradually coalesced into a formal, structured body elected by the students of district 205 to represent them and act on their behalf. Today, students readily approach the board members when they see a problem with the facilities or cafeteria food, but also when they perceive a problem with policies, rules, classes or other matters. And the board doesn’t stop at making sure that burned out lights are replaced and the toilets flush. When they identify a need that can’t be fixed with a tool belt, they find a solution. One program the

board spearheaded supports incoming students, who are often overwhelmed at entering high school with its different requirements, procedures, and even social culture. Where once students just struggled through as best they could, there is now an in-depth orientation process that covers everything they need to know about high school life. Students learn about opportunities and how to access them. And they learn about expectations—among which is that every student will apply to five colleges and apply for five scholarships by graduation. The student board initiated that requirement, because they observed students who needed help getting into college and paying for it. They set the 5 schools/5 scholarships application goal, and they help seniors achieve it. The board also sponsors a summer STEM program, initiated by Ms. Barbra Green Kenan with help from Ms. Paula Walker and Dr. Jerry Doss, to address the needs of incoming students to meet the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math graduation requirements. This 6-week summer program targets gifted students with immersion in handson courses in engineering, chemistry, geometry, and robotics. Additionally, students learn life skills and are given an opportunity to be heard and respected. Students also receive elective credit for the course. According to board member Olukayode Adebogun, the program requires the students to wear IDs, be on time, and experience the structure of high school life. It also allows students to form connections with instructors and staff at their respective high schools, so they know who to go to for whatever they need. And by the way, the board plans to add precalculus for the next STEM session. The Board also hosts the local Jefferson Awards, which promote community service, as well as the Walk Against Violence, coming up in October. The board also sponsors the honors band, which provides entertainment at various events on behalf of district 205. These are the top band students from all the high schools, and are held to the same high standards of academic achievement. The board members themselves are involved in community projects, as a group and as individuals, such as volunteering at Restoration Ministries and collecting for the food pantry. Working with Catholic Charities in November, board members pass out bags to area residents to fill with nonperishable food items, and then go back a week later to collect the full bags and deliver them to the food bank. Serving on the board is an education in itself, taking shy, unsure kids and turning them into confident young adult leaders. Board member Olukayode Adebogun expressed it this way: “It shows us that through hard work and dedication, you can accomplish anything. A lot of people our age, when things get tough,

they just give up. The board shows us if we come together as one, all putting our minds together, we can accomplish great things.” For a glimpse of what great things the student boards is doing, look at their committees: Jefferson Awards promotes volunteerism and community service through acknowledgment and awards. Curriculum and Instruction - uses surveys to determine the electives students want; assists students with SAT preparation; puts on a college readiness night. Cafeteria - inspects the cafeteria including the kitchens (utilizing FDA guidelines); arranges for students to taste the meals on the prospective cafeteria menu and decide the final list; currently offering recommendations for reusable trays and dishes (styrofoam is currently used). Graduation - assists seniors with meeting graduation requirements, as well as with college and scholarship applications, or with entry into the military or a trade. Cultural Events - plans trips and enrichment experiences to promote cultural awareness (DuSable Museum, Museum of Mexican American Art, etc). Rules and Discipline - oversees board member compliance with guidelines in order maintain order and professionalism. Public Relations - helps make the board’s activities known: uses social media to make people aware of their official and community doings; promotes board sponsored events. Elections - organizes and oversees elections of board members at all of the district 205 high schools. To be considered, candidates must write a statement of candidacy, get petitions from students to demonstrate support, and have a GPA of at least 2.5. The student bodies of the high schools then elect their representatives from among these candidates. As well, the student board elects at-large members. Southland Juvenile Justice Commission - SJJC is about lowering youth delinquency. Jaclyn Davis of the SJJC organization approached the student board about creating a youth advisory committee, utilizing college and career workshops, peace circles, and restorative justice tools. Buildings and Facilities - deals with everything building-andgrounds related, from heating and air conditioning, to leaks, to pest control. A final note; I met with these remarkable students personally, and was impressed not only with the scope of the work they do, but with their poise, professionalism and gracious manners. I left with a renewed respect for young people and their idealism; the success of the District 205 Student Board of Education shows what can happen when young people are given the opportunity to serve and innovate. Everyone benefits.

You probably didn’t know that August 16 is National Roller Coaster Day. Actual roller coasters provide people with thrills. But as an investor, how can you stay calm on the “roller coaster” of the financial markets? Here are some suggestions: Know what’s in front of you. On a roller coaster, it can be unsettling not to know where you’re going. The same can be said about investing: If you have no idea what’s in front of you, you might find the journey unnerving—and if that happens, you could make panicky decisions, which are usually bad ones. So prepare for the inevitable market volatility —it’s a normal part of the investment landscape. Buckle up. On a roller coaster, you need to use a restraint to have the excitement of the ride, without taking unnecessary risks. And you can enjoy some of the excitement of investing without incurring more risk than you are comfortable with, too. One way to lower your risk level is to diversify across a range of investments—stocks, bonds, and so on. That way, if a market downturn primarily affects just one type of investment, you’ll have some protection. However, although diversification can reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t protect against all losses or guarantee a profit. Choose a strategy for

the journey. Different people have different ways of handling a roller coaster ride. When you invest, you also need a strategy that works for you, and the best one may be the simplest: Buy quality investments and hold them for the long term. How long is “long term”? It could be 10, 20, 30 years or more. If you’ve chosen a mix of quality investments appropriate for your risk tolerance, you may be able to hold them until either your goals change or the investments themselves undergo some transformation. Stay for the whole “ride.” When you hop on a roller coaster, you’ve got no choice—you’re staying until the ride is over. As an investor, though, you can exit the investment world whenever you like. But if you take a “time out” from investing when the market drops, you risk being out of the market when it rallies— and the early stages of a rally are often when the biggest gains occur. Furthermore, if you keep investing during a “down” market, you’ll be buying shares when their price has dropped, which means your dollars can go further – and you’ll be following one of the basic rules of investing: “Buy low.” You can’t take out all the twists and turns of the investment road, but by following the above suggestions, you can help make the ride less stressful —and possibly more rewarding.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Getting Multiple Offers MIKE BUDER What types of home are selling right now? The perfect ones! We have seen both soft and stable real estate markets for the past several years but I have some news: There are many homes that are selling and selling quickly. They simply fit into one of two categories. They are “well presented” or “very well priced.” Or, preferably —“both.” Recently several of our buyer clients have run into extremely competitive situations resulting in multiple offer scenarios. Last week, I counseled one of our buyers to offer slightly over the list price on a home. Because we did, we were successful in getting our offer accepted over several other contracts that were submitted on that home over the weekend. What is causing this type of competition in a down market? These are basically sellers who have smart Realtors, and they are taking their advice. Before the home is put on the market, the agent goes through the property and points out areas that need improvement. As a result: 1. Interiors are getting a fresh coat of paint. 2. The homes is immaculately cleaned. 3. Any deferred maintenance is immediately taken care of. 4. Repairs are being made. 5. Out-of-date décor, such as old wallpaper, is being removed. 6. New kitchen counters are being installed. 7. The exterior is repainted, if necessary. But most importantly, the homes is priced correctly. Perfect homes, of course are not the only houses that are selling. Foreclosures, estate sales, and properties that need freshening but the sellers do not have the resources to do so are also generating multiple offers. The key is— they must be priced to sell. “It is a beauty contest and a price war” all at the same time. The message here is that, even in difficult markets, there are houses that are coming on and selling the first day they are listed. The secret to this success is “listen to your Realtor.” If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000, (708) 418-4444. The day had finally come. Crowds of people were gathered at the outer gate of the Kingdom anticipating the arrival of the King. A flurry of questions filled the air, “When will the King arrive?” “How do I look?” “Am I presentable?” “Do you think He’ll be pleased with our service?” A trumpet sounds, and the crowd quiets as the King makes his way forward. He pauses and looks over the crowd. Then he with his attendants walk through the gathering of people. Some he directs to the left of the kingdom’s gate, and others he directs to the right of the gate. When he had divided the people into two groups, he returned to his place at the entrance gate to the kingdom. To the group on his right the King says, “When I was hungry you fed me, when I was thirsty you gave me something to drink, when I was an out of town visitor you showed me hospitality, when I was naked you gave me clothes, when I was sick you visited and cared for me until I recovered, and when I was incarcerated, you came to see me. Because of what you did for me, I give you my kingdom to live in forever.” They responded, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and fed you, thirsty and gave

you something to drink, an out of town visitor and showed you hospitality, naked and dressed you, sick and visited and cared for you till you recovered, and when were you incarcerated and we came to see you?” “Truly I tell you,” the King said, “When you did it to the ‘least’ of my brothers, you did it for me.” To the group to the King’s left he said, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels for you did not help me and care for me as those to my right did.” The ‘least’ important (insignificant) people are important to God. How many non-prominent struggling single moms and families, elderly shut-ins, terminal and/ or chronic sick persons do you know within your community God is calling you to serve? When was the last time you showed hospitality to someone new to your church or place of employment, or gave shelter to the homeless? Have you ever volunteered with a prison ministry to share your faith with an inmate? What will the King say to you when He returns? Indiana Psychologists Offer Tips for Back-to-School Blues clinical psychologist in Indianapolis and Public Education Coordinator for IPA. Fortunately, children are extremely capable of coping with change and caregivers can help them in the process by providing an environment that fosters resilience and encourages them to share their feelings about returning to school. As kids go back to school this month, Indiana psychologists offer suggestions to help parents, caregivers and kids prepare: Restart your family’s school routine: If possible, about a week before school starts, parents should try and get their kids back into the school routine. This may mean kids go to bed at their normal time on a school night and wake up early as they would do for school. Having backpacks, binders, lunchboxes and even cafeteria money organized will also help with the transition into the school routine and will help make the first morning go smoothly. Talk to your child: Asking children about their fears or worries about going back to school will help them share their burden.

Whether it’s the first day of kindergarten, returning from a long summer vacation or going to a new school, back to school time can be overwhelming for many parents, children and teens. The transition from summer to school time can test families’ coping skills in dealing with adjustments such as new teachers, new classrooms or even new schools as well as parents struggling with managing school and hectic work schedules. Often the fear of the unknown—classmates, teachers, the school building—is the most stressful, whether for the children hopping on the school bus or their parents who have to wave goodbye. “Back-to-school time for kids and parents can be both exciting and stressful. Adjusting to new routines, new teachers, and new classrooms is a lot of change all at once. For some, this can be overwhelming and anxiety-provoking, which makes it a great time to practice healthy coping strategies like breathing, mindfulness, time management, and planning,” says Dr. Natalie Dattilo, a

Inquire as to what they liked about their previous school or grade and see how those positives can be incorporated into their new experience. If your child expresses uncertainty about the new school year, it may be that you and your child walk through the building and visit your child’s locker or meet with a friend from the previous school year to help ease anxiety of the unknown and reconnect to classmates. And after school starts, take time to listen to your children and discuss their day at school and any issues they may have. Empathize with your children: Change can be difficult, but also exciting. Let your children know that you are aware of what they’re going through and that you will be there to help them in the process. Nerves are normal, but highlight that not everything that is different is necessarily bad. It is important to encourage children to face their fears instead of falling in to the trap of encouraging avoidance. Celebrate when they do something that made them nervous. Get involved and ask for help: Knowledge

of the school and the community will better equip parents and caregivers to understand their child’s surroundings and the transition he or she is undergoing. Meeting members of the community and school will foster support for both parent and child. If parents feel the stress of the school year is too much to handle, seeking expert advice from a licensed psychologist, can help them better manage and cope. Dr. Dattilo agrees. “This time of year doesn’t have to be difficult. For many, it offers a ‘fresh start’ and a chance to establish new and healthy habits for your family. You could even sit down together and decide on a family goal for the new school year. Staying connected is one of the most helpful things we can do to deal with the stress of change.” To learn more visit the American Psychological Association at www.apa.org/ helpcenter and follow @APAHelpCenter. Real Estate Specialists

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We received a full price offer on our home the 2nd day we had it listed. We now think we may have listed it too low. Your thoughts? Answer: Versions of this column have appeared before. It is still true. And for many, still relevant. Perhaps nowhere is this phenomenon more clearly illustrated than in the case where a seller receives a good offer right away. The annals of real estate are well stocked with stories of sellers who refused to take a good, but not perfect, first offer, and who then waited a long time before finally accepting something else at a considerably lower price. The Sellers first thought is almost inevitable. “Did we list it too low?” “If someone will offer this much so soon, maybe we should wait a while and see if we can get more.” As an antidote to the ill effects of the “curse of the first offer”, this observation might be kept in mind. The fact that an offer is received early in the listing period -- even in the first few days -- doesn’t mean that the property has been listed too low. Today, a good buyer’s agent will have electronically entered a “profile” of his client’s needs and price range into the system. Then, whenever he logs on to the

Boats Boat for sale: Porta-bote, 12 feet, 3 seats, folds to 4 inch flat. $400. 219-384-6106

MLS, he will be notified if a listing has been entered that matches that profile. We all know that there is typically a bit of a dance in the pricing and negotiating for a property. Sellers, with the concurrence of their agents, will usually list their property for an amount that is both higher than what they believe its value to be and higher than what they would be satisfied to receive. Why? Because they know that buyers almost always want and expect to pay less than the listed price The final point is that potential buyers learn quickly of the existence of an appropriate new listing. Thus, a flurry of activity at the outset of the listing does not necessarily imply a too-low price; rather, it reflects the efficiency of the system. Don’t be greedy, take your good offer and run to the bank with the profits. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Important Lesson – The Cleaning Lady ARLO KALLEMEYN Here is a story of a young college student who learned an important life lesson. “During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: “‘What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?’ “Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50’s, but how would I know her name? “I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. “‘Absolutely,’ said the professor. ‘In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say ‘hello.’” “I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.” Thanks for reading our weekly paper. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of all kinds of careers.

The Hammond Public Library will be exhibiting the Senior Workshop Group Art Show from South Shore Arts Substation No. 9 in Hammond through August 30. South Shore Arts has offered the Senior Workshop for at least 15 years. Some participants have taken classes elsewhere or have participated in the Senior Workshop for several years, while others are fairly new. At the Workshop, “Everybody’s doing their own thing, working at their own pace, at their own level,” says Leona Jurincie, artist and instructor, who says her goal is “not creating Mini-Me’s, but teaching them how to use the materials the best way I know how.” Olga Pacheco of East Chicago says, “I played with art on my own.” “You doodled,” interjects John Lopez, another Workshop student, and Pacheco agrees with the term. Her bright colors in “Yellow Flowers” bring to mind the vivid colors seen in work by Frida Kahlo. Shirley Gluth of Hammond says, “I’ve

liked to draw all my life, but I never started oil painting until I was in my mid-40s. A lot of what I do, I give away to friends and family. I’ve done a painting for each grandchild.” She has two pieces displayed, one of which is “Lion,” a pencil drawing. Julia Earnshaw of Chicago’s Hegewisch community is in her second Workshop session. “She’s a quick learner,” John Lopez says of her painting, “A Pear,” done in watercolor. Lopez, a Hammond resident, has attended several Senior Workshops. He operated a crane at Inland Steel for 45 years, and worked there even longer. “I like to work with woodwork. The grain is telling you something, and you try to bring it out,” he says. “Same with painting. It’s telling you something and you try to work and bring it out.” One of his oil paintings depicts ancestral lands in Texas. Hammond resident Kathy Joyce has taken the Workshop a few times since she retired. She had taken classes in oils

and drawing at the Art Institute. “It’s kind of a challenge. Each class I learn a little bit more.” Workshop participant Barbara Schilling of Hammond arranged for the exhibit. Other Workshop participants whose work is exhibited are Lois Martin (oil), Carol Selund (watercolor), Pat Lennon (watercolor), and Judith Meyers (oil). Jurincie says of her pupils, “Some have taken classes elsewhere. I try to help them be brave enough to go to other people’s workshops. I try not to make them feel inadequate.” Some pupils are discouraged when they’re unable to create what they see in their mind’s eye. “I always tell them, “Give it three weeks.” The Workshop participants are quick to credit Jurincie. “She’s patient. She’s a very good instructor,” says Lopez. Art work can be viewed in the first and second floor galleries during library hours. The Hammond Public Library is at 564 State Street; (219) 931-5100, Ext. 302.

Bishop Noll French Teacher Honored Diane Wilson was selected as Secondary Teacher of the Year by Indiana members of the American Association of Teachers of French –––––––––––––––––––––––

How do you say “inspiring” in French? Ask Bishop Noll Institute French teacher Diane Wilson and she could not only translate the word for you, but also show you what it means to inspire others. Wilson was recently selected as Secondary Teacher of the Year by her fellow Indiana members of the American Association of Teachers of French. Wilson said she felt shock and gratitude to find out she won. “I’m honored and humbled to think that my colleagues chose me. I had no idea I was even being considered,” said Wilson, who has taught French at Bishop Noll for seven years. Wilson will accept the award in November during the annual Indiana Foreign Language Teacher Association conference. Receiving this award also qualifies her to apply for Indiana Foreign Language Teacher of the Year and the winner of that award will be announced during the conference. “Diane really puts forth her energies to make our French program the best,” said Noll Principal Lorenza Jara Pastrick. “She regularly works with our French partner schools in organizing cultural experiences across countries. I’m thankful that her extra energies were noticed by the American Association of Teachers of French.” Teaching means a lot to Wilson, who enjoys the students and opportunities they have as a result of studying French. “When they’re successful, it makes me happy,” Wilson said. The French program and other world languages at Bishop Noll offer a myriad of opportunities including study abroad. “They are totally aligned with Noll’s mission to prepare students mind, body and soul.” Bishop Noll Institute, a diverse, Catholic college preparatory school, offers world language classes in French, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. For more information on the school and how to become a Bishop Noll student, visit bishopnoll.org or call (219) 932-9058.

In Everything Give Thanks PETE TASSIO

The Bible exhorts us to give thanks to God in everything. Meaning that even though we may be going through some difficult circumstances, we are to maintain an attitude of gratefulness. Not being grateful to God for causing the problem, but because He bestows mercy and grace to see us through the problem. The Lord has promised to help all those who call upon His name. On the whole, people in today’s world have become much less grateful for what they have received. Even here in the United States, the most blessed country in the world, many have become cynical and unappreciative of all that is available to them. Instead of giving thanks for whatever they have, many only consider what they don’t have. According to their way of thinking, if they don’t have everything that others seem to have, they are unsatisfied and unhappy. But the Bible tells us to be content with what we have; godliness with contentment is great gain. In other words, it’s always an advantage for a person to remain content and thankful, rather than walking around distressed and unsatisfied. When we thank God for all that He has done for us by sending His Son we will obtain an inward contentment, as opposed to the lack or the desire of outward things. Throughout the year, let’s make every effort to give thanks unto God for all that He has done for us, even if we are experiencing tribulation or affliction. Let’s be openly thankful for our families, neighbors, community, and our nation. And if we can be a help to others who are especially in need, let us take advantage of the opportunity to be a blessing to them without hesitation. But most of all let us give thanks for Jesus Christ; the expression of God’s love, who satisfies our every need and desire! Pastor Pete Tassio The King’s Community Church

The Natural Alternative

Natural Approach For ADHD/ADD ANNA CONIGLIO, ND Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder characterized by a poor attention span and may be accompanied by hyperactivity as well. Often a child will be labeled ADHD/ADD because he has a behavior or emotional temperament that is challenging in the classroom. That doesn’t mean he has ADHD/ADD. There are a lot of reasons kids are the way they are. ADHD occurs in children and adults. Children with ADHD /ADD often have learning behavioral difficulties in school. Adults frequently have problems with memory and concentration. Nutrition plays a big role in the management of ADHD/ADD condition, certain foods or substances are even thought to cause it. Dietary changes are essential to provide optimal health. Both children and adults can benefit from this dietary recommendation. It has been proved that poor diet and food sensitivities can be related to ADHD/ADD. With a healthy diet plan along with nutritional supplementation, a person can treat and prevent ADHD/ADD. In the last 30 years both the quality of food and meal time habits have changed dramatically in the U.S. These days junk foods and fast foods are frequently consumed. Children’s diets even at school are high in simple carbohydrates such as sugar, white bread, and white-flour food products, and often lack proteins and healthy fats, and are For sale: 2007 Evinrude E-tec 75hp outboard engine, exc. cond. $3500. deficient in vegetables. Parents and even doctors are less aware of how foods affect the brain. Then rely on medication to suppress symptoms. Rather than prescribe harmful substances such as drugs like Ritalin and Adderall, naturopathic approaches to the treatment of ADHD/ADD take more a holistic look at the individual and take into account diet, lifestyle, and emotional factors. A natural approach is used to gently help the person to heal and to reach a state of health and balance. The natural approach does not harm and has a greater chance of eliminating the root cause. This is very important especially in children, because of the frequent side effects of prescription drugs. Prescription drugs are designed to just treat one complaint. If you have 3 different complaints, you will need to take 3 different drugs to address these complaints. Natural alternatives do not have the dangerous side effects of pharmaceuticals and they are not habitforming. Instead of suppressing symptoms, natural treatments address the underlying cause. I am committed to educating and coaching you with respect to your health and wellness. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD against us” from the Lord’s Prayer for a time. One day, an inner voice said, “Who are you to edit the prayer Jesus himself gave you?” The same Jesus who prayed, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” as they murdered him. She surrendered. “Lord, I will pray this prayer. Help me to forgive!” God changed her heart. He helped her do the impossible. She reached out to one of her family’s murderers and forgave him. Today, she tells others about the freedom and joy of God-empowered forgiveness. Immaculée told her story at Willow Creek’s recent Global Leadership Summit. Such stories remind me of the radical, lifetransforming power of Jesus Christ. They also challenge me to forgive as I have been forgiven.

Immaculée Ilibagiza could not finish the Lord’s Prayer. She’d get to “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those….” But no. She could not finish that sentence. She’d be praying a lie and God could see her heart. She could not forgive those who slaughtered her family. In 1994, the Rwandan government called on Hutus to wipe out the minority Tutsi population. Soldiers and citizens went home to home killing men, women and children. Immaculée and her family huddled in their home, entrusting themselves to God in the face of death. Immaculée’s father ordered her to flee to a neighbor’s home. The neighbor, a brave Hutu, risked his life to hide her and seven others in a tiny bathroom. A mob ransacked the house while Immaculée prayed silently to God to save them. Miraculously, no one searched the bathroom! Immaculée dropped “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass

WOODROW WILCOX On July 26, 2017, I checked on a medical bill problem for a client from Michigan City, Indiana. His agent got a copy of the bill and brought it to me. I researched the bill and found the problem. Again, Medicare failed to send the claim information to our client’s insurance company. You can’t blame an insurance company for not paying a claim that it never got. I easily wrote a letter that should fix the problem and get the bill paid. Thus, we saved the client $2,191. This failure of the Medicare system to get claims to senior citizens’ insurance companies is the most frequent reason for Medicare related medical bills to not get paid. In previous articles and in my book, I explained why I believe that Medicare bill mistakes alone cost senior citizens throughout America over one billion dollars a year in false bills that they should not receive. But, many seniors

do pay those false bills. It is a national tragedy. I have tried and tried to get this problem some attention from Members of Congress or other federal officials. So far, I have not found people in the federal government who care. It seems that if the system is making money for them but costing senior citizens a billion dollars per year, there is no problem that needs their attention. If you care about this issue, may I suggest that you copy this article and send it to your U.S. Senators and the Member of Congress who represents you. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved senior citizen clients of that firm over one million dollars. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.
