Lansing’s victorious team of teens and cops shows off their winning basketball trophy accompanied by Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. ______________________________________
Teenagers from seven different communities within Thornton Township teamed together with police officers in the first annual Taste of Thornton Township Basketball Tournament as a show of community unity. The tournament featured teenagers and police officers playing on the same team for the pride of their town or village and focusing on working with each other. Typically, communities have police officers and kids playing against each other in a basketball tournament; however, Thornton Township officials, decided the alternative made more sense. “The way you make a community stronger is working together, loving each other, and knowing each other,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “We shouldn’t have kids and police officers on opposite teams. We should have them side by side helping lift each other up. This is something we are going to do every year, and it is going to be bigger and better.”
A three-time Township Supervisor of the Year award winner, the program is an extension of the Faith, Dignity and Respect Initiative bringing together elected officials, law enforcement and community leaders to develop proactive ways to stem the shocking amount of gun violence and community unrest that swept the nation in places like Ferguson, Baltimore, New York and Chicago. The five-on-five basketball tournament, which was held at South Suburban College, is an example of many Thornton Township’s programs that focus on police officers and teenagers learning more about each other. The village of Lansing police department and teens won the tournament. “You could immediately see that the basketball tournament really brought the officers and teenagers together. They huddled with each other, and encouraged and supported one another throughout the day,” said Ernst Lamothe Jr., Thornton Township communication manager, who organized the event.
“We saw police officers putting their arms around teenagers and just sitting down and having good conversations, laughing together and having a great time.” In the wake of what happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, and a nation being divided, Thornton Township and local officials wanted a unifying event. “It was a great event to see all of us just having fun and bonding,” said Officer Mack Sanders, Markham police chief, who took part in the program. “This is something that we definitely want to continue to be part of next year.” Maureen Grady-Pervoich, village of Lansing board member, attended the entire tournament and believed it was something that needs to happen among various communities. “I am so proud that I live win Thornton Township in a place that would put on an event like this,” said Pervoich. “I don’t know many government organizations who are doing this kind of large scale events and community outreach.”

by Melanie Jongsma LANSING, Ill. (August 16, 2017) - An estimated 125 people gathered in the auditorium of T. F. South High School for a Community Meeting to discuss police/community relations in Lansing. Alongside The Lansing Journal, media coverage was provided by Fox 32, WGN, the Northwest Indiana Times, and LNN. The meeting was part of a series of responses to a June 24 incident involving an off-duty police officer and an AfricanAmerican teenager. Video of the incident was posted to Facebook on June 26 and soon went viral. “I recognize the importance of the reason we’re all here tonight,” said Mayor Patty Eidam in her opening remarks, and she assured the audience that the videoed incident “does not define our community.” After offering several examples of positive programs that Lansing residents are involved in, the Mayor included diversity in a list of qualities that make Lansing special. Lansing Police Chief Dennis Murrin took the floor and apologized for not being able to speak in specifics about the event due to the ongoing investigation by the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. Murrin admitted that he is “not proud of” what happened, and he invited community members to offer ideas about changes that need to be made. The community had opportunity to do that during the Community Dialogue section of the meeting, which was moderated by Pastor Leroy Childress
of Grace Church and Ken Bergeron of the U. S. Department of Justice. Approximately 10 community members came forward to voice concerns about the Lansing Police Department. Each speaker was limited to two minutes, and Chief Murrin and Mayor Eidam answered questions directly whenever possible. Two T. F. South students served as scribes, summarizing and recording the concerns on a large whiteboard and pad of paper for the audience to see. At the end of 40 minutes, the list of concerns included: 1. Lack of diversity in Lansing government and police force 2. Diversity training for police 3. More community dialogue on race 4. De-escalation training for police 5. Limited bilingual staff in government and police force 6. Lack of communication with the public 7. Lack of communication with youth 8. Limited online information in Spanish 9. Unclear status of Human Relations Commission 10. Need to improve police complaint process The next step involved making recommendations to address these concerns, and residents again stepped to the microphones to offer ideas. At the end of 20 minutes, the list of recommendations included: 1. Create the Human Relations Commission ASAP

Though the mood following the event was generally positive, some residents expressed doubts about the administration’s intentionality to make meaningful change. The Community Meeting was organized by a coalition of Lansing’s elected officials, staff, citizens, and clergy, with guidance from the Department of Justice.

Flora Clemma Roselma Woodruff West (“LaVanche”) and her twin brother Floran Theron Gideon LaVerne Woodruff (“Bud”) were born in 1917 on separate days, but only minutes apart. Their parents chose to register September 9th as their birth date. They had 4 older brothers, Samuel Marsale, Wesley Vernell, Charles Palmerell and LaRoy LaZelle. Every one of them, including LaVanche and Bud, acquired the nickname “Woody.” The family grew up in Foresman, near Brook, IN, and then moved to Earl Park, then to Terre Haute in 1928. All of the brothers and their mother graduated with education degrees from Indiana State Teachers College in Terre Haute, IN. LaVanche was married in 1944 to Gale West until his passing in 2008—64 years. Their only child, Gary West, was born in 1946. (He passed away in 2011.) Starting a new household in the 1940s was hard, since the war effort took nearly everything. So they lived with Gale’s folks on a farm at first. In those days, they used kerosene lamps for light and kept food cold in an ice box. LaVanche was a respected teacher in Crown Point for 11 years and then they moved to Valparaiso where she taught for 13 years. She was well liked by her students. She discovered the way to discipline was not to give swats or rap knuckles (standard procedure at the time); it was to tell the student that when they settled down and it got quiet, then she would continue the lesson. She has enjoyed many friendships in her 100 years. She and the neighborhood ladies have gotten together monthly to play cards for over 40 years. She still hand-writes over 125 Christmas cards every year, and until the last couple of years she did them in calligraphy. She enjoys genealogy and has written four books on several of her family lines. Her happiest memories are of her family. She and Gale hosted the Woodruff Thanksgiving family reunion for 50 years. She has received many honors over the years for teaching, volunteering, and more. She received the Woman of the year award for 2008 from the Valpo Women’s Club. During her lifetime, LaVanche has seen many firsts, from planes, automobiles, and indoor bathrooms, to a man standing on the moon, computers, and just recently, the solar eclipse. She was interviewed about her life for Generations Magazine; the story can be read in the February/March 2015 issue online at generationsthemagazine.com. On September 9, there will be a celebration for LaVanche in honor of her 100 birthday. She has former students all over the Chicagoland area, and is looking forward to seeing as many of them as are able to come. Rather than gifts, West wants birthday cards with a note inside telling how guests know her, and including an address so she can send a thank you. For information about the event, contact LaVanche’s niece Jane Woodruff McDaniel at 219-688-7573.

Financial Advice Column
Can You Save for College and Retirement? BOB KRYGSHELD Few of us have unlimited financial resources— which means that almost all of us need to prioritize our financial goals. Consequently, you’ll have some decisions to make if you’d like to help pay for your children’s college educations someday while, at the same time, saving for your own retirement. Depending on your income and assets, your family might be eligible for some needs-based financial aid awarded by the college. Also, you should encourage your children to apply for as many scholarships as possible—but keep in mind that most scholarships don’t provide a “full ride.” Here’s the bottom line: Don’t assume you will receive so much aid that you don’t need to save for college at all, but don’t burden yourself with the expectation that you need to pick up the full tab for your children’s schooling. On a practical level, you may want to commit to putting a certain amount per month into a college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan. You can generally invest in the 529 plan offered by most states, but in some cases, you may be eligible for a state income tax incentive. Also, all withdrawals from 529 plans will be free from federal income taxes, as long as the money is used for a qualified college or graduate school expense of the beneficiary you’ve named. (Withdrawals for expenses other than
qualified education expenditures may be subject to federal and state taxes and a 10% penalty on the earnings.) By starting your 529 plan early, when your children are young, you’ll give the investments within the plan more time to grow. Plus, you can make smaller contributions on a regular basis, rather than come up with big lump sums later on. And by following this approach, you may be in a better financial position for investing in your IRA and your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Obviously, it’s to your benefit to contribute as much as you can to these plans, which offer tax advantages and a wide range of investment options. If you’re investing in an employer-backed plan, try to boost your contributions every time your salary increases. At the very least, always put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And once your children are through with college, you can discontinue saving in your 529 plan and devote more money to your retirement accounts. It can certainly be challenging to save for education and retirement— but with discipline and perseverance, it can be done. “Dear House…” MIKE BUDER Consider this my resignation…I knew when I was first introduced to you, you were going to be too much and a bit of a pain. But, because you had a lot to offer, like granite countertops, stainless steel appliances and a cul-desac lot, I would give you a shot in hopes that with the quality of service that I offer I could change you and bring you to reality and help you find the right match. Now a few months have gone by, you have not changed, you have not taken my advice and we have become very stressful towards each other. I have seen other attractive properties in your area become available, they are the same age, same square footage and just as upgraded, but they didn’t think too much of themselves and came to the market strong, and now they have families. Do you not think that I want that for you? So I regret to inform you that I will no longer be able to assist you. For future reference, if you do decide to go with another matchmaker, you need to remember no one wants to be with someone that thinks way too much of themselves. If you really want a family like you said, you need to display a bit more humility and put

yourself at the same level as other suitable homes in the neighborhood. By thinking too much of yourself you’re not even competition to them. I guarantee you if you come down to their level, you will give them a reason to be concerned. Because due to your location and your upgrades you have a lot more to offer. Your prospective family needs to feel comfortable with you, and feel like they’re getting a good deal. If you do decide that I am right and would consider putting yourself at the same level as those in your neighborhood, I know I could help you find the right family, no problem. But as long as you think too much of yourself, we are just wasting each other’s time. Sincerely, Your Realtor. on the Constitution after the riot in Charlottesville between the alt-right and anti-racism protesters. Less than a handful of GOP leaders condemned Trump’s weak response to the cause of the riot that led to the death of 1 and 19 injured. Concerned Americans have been posting photos of persons who engaged in the altright riots to Facebook. As of this writing at least 3 have lost their jobs. CEOs who were a part of the president’s Manufacturing Council withdrew after Trump’s back tracking on the Charlottesville violence. These are powerful first steps in confronting racism lurking within our government. I read an interesting article about General Robert E. Lee that was confirmed by the daughter of Lee ( https://finance. yahoo.com/news/robert-e-lee-thoughtconfederate-220734970.html). General Lee was against the making of monuments of the civil war. He believed them to be divisive against the unity of the country. Lee “supported getting rid of the confederate flag” and “erasing battlefields from the landscape altogether.” Today, we live in the aftermath of what Lee feared. The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to announce a special guest artist exhibition titled “Light Rendering Space,” by artist Susan L. Moore in the Photo Four Gallery from August 23th through October 5. The Photo Four Gallery is located in Room 4338 on the 4th Floor of SSC’s Main Campus. Susan L. Moore received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College in Chicago, a Masters in Art Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and most recently, in 2003, she earned a Masters in Fine Art from Washington University, School of Art in St. Louis, Missouri. Currently, Moore is a Professor at Indiana University South Bend where she teaches photography and serves as Chair of the Fine Arts Department. Moore’s photography has been exhibited nationally and internationally in individual shows as well as juried exhibitions. Her recent landscape images were selected for exhibition at the South Bend Museum of Art and she has received grants from the Indiana Arts Commission to support her landscape photography projects Moore stated, “The photographic process begins with a consideration of light and subject. In these minimalist images of empty places, the quality of light becomes the subject. The film emulsion renders a delicate pattern, commonly known as grain, from the subtle texture of these interior spaces. This, along with the visual qualities of tonality, composition, and space are indicative of the photographic process as a form of representation. The camera, by its very nature, mediates between the subject and the print. The abstraction exaggerates this distinction. In contemporary culture saturated with images, the camera becomes a powerful tool in forming an understanding of reality.”

GOD WITH US
The unfolding events during and following the alt-right riots in Charlottesville feels like a trailer to the future arrival of the anti-Christ. When he appears, the whole world will be fooled by his speeches and plans for a one world government except the elect of God. Not too many African-Americans were fooled by Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again.” We knew it was a code for “Make America White Again.” Every time a Black person expressed what was behind the president’s slogan, they were accused of throwing the race card. Despite the white washing of American history that we’ve all been taught in school, my generation grew up with grandparents and greatgrandparents who experienced slavery and Jim Crow Laws; and we ourselves experienced first-hand discrimination in education and the job market, so we understood what was being implied in the 2016 election. President Trump’s 7-month reign in the White House has revealed that most American citizens are more righteous in the eyes of God than our government and the Conservative Evangelicals that support them. Across our nation Americans marched in solidarity against the rise of the alt-right’s (neo-Nazi, white supremacy, white nationalists) attack

Most recently, the girls and Coach Juli Sandoval held a car wash benefiting the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster. Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Days before white supremacy reared its ugly head in Charlottesville, my wife Nancy introduced me to California Newsreel’s 2014 documentary Race: The Power of an Illusion. The home page states, “The division of the world’s peoples into distinct groups—‘red,’ ‘black,’ ‘white or ‘yellow’ peoples—has become so deeply imbedded in our psyches… many would promptly dismiss as crazy any suggestion of its falsity. Yet, that’s exactly what this provocative… series by California Newsreel claims.” Part 3, Race: The House We Live In, traces how federal lending practices after World War II created white, middle-class suburbia to the exclusion of minorities. This further entrenched the notion of race, as well as segregation and racism. Two quotes from this segment: “We were an all-white community and I think it’s an unrealistic world. I think there’s something sterile about everyone being on the same

economic level and everyone being the same color.” “It’s an untenable, artificial world. You’re creating a weird utopia in a way—a utopia of…middle class white people who were trying to deny that they lived in a multi-racial world. And you can’t keep that up forever.” Laws have changed. But we’re still living the legacy 70 years later. I can condemn the horrors of Charlottesville. But this hits closer to home for me. Do I embrace the fact that God created all of us as one race—the human race—to reflect his kaleidoscopic glory via many shades, hues, ethnic groups and cultural expressions? Do I embrace the fact that he comes in the gospel of Jesus Christ to re-unite us for his glory again? Does this stir in me a passion to renounce my “birds of a feather flock together” instincts to know the joy of Jesus-centered relationships across all kinds of lines?

Electrophysiologist Wassim Ballany, MD, on staff at Community Hospital in Munster, holds the tiny Micra pacemaker in his hands. Comparable to the size of a large everyday vitamin, the Micra Transcatheter Pacing System does not require a surgical incision, or the creation of a pocket under the skin, or the use of leads to deliver pacing therapy. Unlike many other pacemakers, the Micra is approved for safe use with MRI technology. –––––––––––––––––––––––
The new FDA-approved Medtronic Micra leadless pacemaker is the world’s smallest pacemaker designed to treat bradycardia or slow heartbeat. Comparable to the size of a large everyday vitamin, the Micra Transcatheter Pacing System does not require a surgical incision or the creation of a pocket under the skin or the use of leads to deliver pacing therapy. Unlike many other pacemakers, the Micra is approved for safe use with MRI technology. Cardiac electrophysiologists at Community Hospital in Munster are first in Northwest Indiana to implant the new tiny pacemaker, which requires no incision or skin pocket and has no lead. Need an MRI? No problem. “Cardiac electrophysiologists at Community Healthcare System have a deep commitment to delivering the latest, most state-of-the-art treatments available for heart rhythm disorders,” said Wassim Ballany, MD, electrophysiologist on staff at Community Hospital, Munster. “When this advanced device became available upon FDA approval, we worked with hospital administration to make this an option for appropriate patients.” At less than 1/10 the size of traditional pacemakers, the Micra transcatheter pacing system is able to be delivered directly into the heart through a catheter inserted into the large femoral vein in the leg. The Micra pacemaker is attached to the heart with small prongs that secure the device which delivers electrical pulses as needed to pace the heart. In contrast to traditional pacemakers, a lead is not necessary to implant the Micra device in the heart. It eliminates potential medical complications arising from a chest incision or from a wire lead running from a conventional pacemaker into the heart. About 1.5 million Americans have pacemakers, devices that send electrical pulses to the heart to help maintain a regular

rhythm, according to medical technology developer Medtronic. Bradycardia is a slower than normal heart rate that may occur from congenital heart disease, the natural aging process, side effects from some heart medications or electrical malfunctions. The hearts of adults at rest usually beat between 60 and 100 times a minute. For those with bradycardia, the heart beats fewer than 60 times a minute. Bradycardia can be serious if the heart doesn’t pump enough oxygen-rich blood to the body. As a result, those with bradycardia may feel dizzy or have chronic lack of energy, shortness of breath, or even fainting spells. The Micra is a single chamber pacemaker that when implanted can correct bradycardia and help the heart maintain an appropriate rate. Electronic implantable devices such as pacemakers and medical imaging are important technological advances, particularly in older, more fragile patients, Ballany said. Over a lifetime, more patients will need an MRI than not. “It has been estimated that up to 50 percent of patients with standard cardiac rhythm devices who need an MRI aren’t able to get one,” said Ballany. Micra was designed, tested and approved to be used safely with MRI scanners, Ballany said. This offers advantages to both doctors and their patients who need to undergo an MRI. Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Speaking Of Seniors
Fruits and Veggies WOODROW WILCOX On August 8, 2017, a bag with fruits and veggies and a note was delivered to my office in Merrillville, Indiana. It was from a client that I had been helping with some Medicare related medical bill problems. The fruits and veggies were from her garden. I phoned to thank the client. I reminded her that she did not need to give me anything because helping her and all our other senior citizen clients is my job. “I know that,” she said. “But, you have helped me so much and so often that I just wanted to give you something extra to show my appreciation.” That’s fine. I appreciate her gesture. But, I want all our clients to know that they should really thank the founder of the insurance agency – Fred Ulayyet. He hired me to help his clients. We were friends before I started working for him. He noticed that I understood Medicare related medical bill problems better than he did. So, he hired me to help protect his clients from those problems. As far as I know, this is the only insurance agency in northwest Indiana that has
someone working full time to protect senior citizen clients from the various problems in the Medicare system. A friend of mine in Indianapolis told me that he believed that I am the only one in the entire nation who does this kind of work. I suspect that there are many other people helping seniors with Medicare medical bill problems. But, I do suspect that I am the only one who both works the problems and writes about the problems to help seniors, and the relatives and friends who care for seniors, to understand that the Medicare system is far from perfect. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that insurance agency to save over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com) and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

Engineering, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Job Training, the new Latino Center and many more were on hand to answer questions and guide potential students with program facts and requirements. Representation from Admissions, Registration, Counseling, Academic Assistance Center and other supportive services assisted our students in navigating their college and career choices. Students received valuable information on the registration process, course selection options, Financial Aid, as well as Student Life. Despite the lingering budget crisis with the State of Illinois, our doors are open and we remain committed to the mission of South Suburban College by “Serving our Students and the Community through lifelong learning.”
South Suburban College hosted its 4th Annual Open House on Thursday, August 3rd from 4:30-7:00 p.m. with something for everyone. There was fun, excitement and a large dose of enthusiasm provided by college staff. The Open House, geared toward providing College information and pathways to successful careers, saw nearly 300 persons come through its doors seeking just that. Many participated in College tours and raffles for Visa Gift Cards, and other giveaways. WGCI and Tone Kapone were also on campus and rounded out the fun. Program representatives from STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), Manufacturing, Building and Construction, Paralegal Studies, Court Reporting, Allied Health, SSC Maker Lab, Graphic Arts, Nursing, Applied Engineering, Electronics

POL ISH PILGR IMS WA L K 37 MIL ES THROUGH CHICAGO TO MERRILLVILLE: As they have for the past 30 years, the Pilgrims are pictured here along Avenue O and Burnham in Calumet City as they walk, thousands strong, from St. Michael’s Church in Chicago all the way out to Merrillville with a stop over along Ridge Road in Munster, Indiana at the Carmelite Monastery. The lawn of the Monastery is dotted with pop up tents used by the Pilgrims for their overnight say. The 3 young ladies here are all part of the walk t h i s ye a r w h ich fe at u re d c on st a nt a nnouncements in bot h English a nd Polish as they walked, prayed and waved to the crowds. The three girls were found taking a break from the journey at the Calumet City McDonald’s at Burnham and River Oaks Drive, enjoying a refreshing cold drink. They are Ewa Halupka, Kasia Haluypka and Gizela Witek and they noted that they make the walk every year. True Faith in Action! ***
CRU ISE N IGH T S ON R IDGE I N LANSING FINISH UP FOR 2017: The last of the summer Cruise Nights on Ridge in Lansing had it’s finale on Saturday August, 12th, 2017 and by all accounts it was a grand success. Thunder Road Productions did the judging and the fabulous and fanciful cars were on display by their proud owners. Pictured here are some car fans that attend as often as they can... Bob and Cathy Badger with their 66 Corvette and Dave Colby of Dyer with his 1968 GTO. All along Ridge Road the businesses that were open did a booming business. My husband and I went into Gayety’s and got in line for our sundaes. The wait was worth it and while in line, a Gayety’s staffer brought around some chocolates for us to munch on while we waited. Sweet Indeed! Thanks Flessor Family! ***
N 2 N ATTENDS A GUBERNATORIAL FORUM: It seems that politics dominate the national conversation these days and most notably in Illinois. N 2 N caught an early forum last week composed of candidates from all over Illinois—Sen. Dan Bliss; Educator Bob Dyber; Scott Drewery; Tio Hardiman and JB Pritzger of the storied Pritzger family. I was taking photos of the event when Mr. Pritzger
turned t he tables a nd wa nted me to have a picture with him which I happily agreed to. Not often that a humble scribe and realtor gets to take a photo with a billionaire! His family philanthropy has fed needy kids in Illinois this summer when school is out and they did not have access to school breakfast and lunches. *** NEIGHBORHOOD FITNESS BY DEBBIE CELEBR ATES 5 YEARS: Dyer resident Debbie Beem has been helping us stay fit for 5 years now, the first year out of her home and the last 4 out of her studio at 169 Matteson Street, Dyer, Indiana. Men and women age 16-70 walk into her studio and come out stronger and more confident! Debbie herself started her Figure Competition in 2014 and took first place in her first show. She then went on to earn her Pro Card in 2015. She retired f rom compet it ion when she ea r ned pro designation. Debbie is Mom to 3 children and married for 18 years to Mike Beemsterboer. Congratulations Debbie on 5 years of keeping us fit! For more information contact Debbie at Debbie. Beem@yahoo.com *** BENEFIT FOR YOUNG TR ISTA N HIROSKY: In January of this year, little Tristan Hirosky was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia), a type of cancer within the bone marrow. His medical fees are adding up faster than his family can pay for them. This little guy is a true hero and brave for a 6 year old. There will be a fundraiser for Tristan taking place on Saturday September 23rd, 2017 from 3 to 11 p.m. at Club 81 Too, 13167 Avenue M in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago. Tickets are $25 and will get you in the door for cash prizes, food, and entertainment (bands and DJ). Event is being underwritten by Synergy Partners Credit Union, 11615 Avenue O. There will be fun for all ages at the fundraiser—a bounce house, bean bag tournament, face pa i nt i ng, ba sket ra f f les, si lent auction, split the pot and a cash bar. For more information contact Dawn Zavesky, rehabgirl23@yahoo.com or 773-636-4474 or go to her Facebook page, Dawn Zavesky. ***

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m a 27-year-old mother of two, I want to buy a house but my credit score is not that great. I’m single, I’ve worked at my current job for three years. I want to own my own home but it’s hard to get any help for single mothers. It’s getting to the point that I want give up. What can I do? Answer: Let’s sort what is, and is not, an issue. Lenders do not care about your age. Discrimination on the basis of familial status and gender are illegal. Lenders want to make loans—no loans, no fees, no interest. Go back to your credit score. If it is “not that great” what can you do to make it better? Is it average or below average? Surely having a steady job is a big plus. Try this: Start making appointments with lenders. Have a lender review your credit report—you can generally get such a report for minimal cost. Is there anything on your credit report which is factually incorrect or out-of-date? Are there loan programs for which you might qualify? What about statebacked programs? Lastly, make a point of paying all bills early and in full—your credit score will be helped. Question: I placed a $500 deposit on a lot. Shortly after, the broker called and said the property had been sold to someone

else. There was no other paperwork. Can they do this? Answer: You can just picture the questions that would arise in a contract law class: Is delivery of the check enough to create an agreement? Was the check cashed? If it was cashed, did the check contain all the elements needed to have a contract? Was the lot fully described on the check? If the check was not cashed, what do you have? If the check was cashed has the money been returned? You can surely have an attorney review this matter. But if your money has been returned, then you need to ask what you want to accomplish, what it will cost and how long it will take. It may be best to simply look at a different lot. If you like another property, get help from a broker so you can be certain that a deal is a deal and the paperwork is correct. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com.
