Thornwood High School students view the eclipse in this photo by Assistant Principal Don Holmes, titled “Thunderbirds Reach for the Stars.” _________________________________________________________________
The solar eclipse of August 21, 2017 was not total in our area, but it was an event at Thornwood High School nonetheless, with students experiencing the first eclipse in their lifetimes. In 1994 there was an annular eclipse over this region, in which the moon appears smaller than the sun and consequently doesn’t cover it entirely. But that was several years before today’s students were born. In fact,
eclipse and proper technique to protect their vision, using special glasses. It was a memorable experience for all. A Thunderbird commented, “I was disappointed that it didn’t get dark here. The next one is going to be in 2024, and for that one, I’m definitely going to be where it’s a total eclipse.” The solar eclipse in April of 2024 will be visible as a total eclipse in a diagonal band slashing northeast through New England, downward to southwest Texas.
the last time there was a solar eclipse visible across the entire United States was June 8, 1918. That was partial eclipse that could be seen from coast to coast. The last time a total eclipse was seen anywhere in the US was February 1979, which was visible in a curving swath from Oregon northeast across to North Dakota. Science teachers Mark Danielson and Nathan Boylan instructed Thornwood students on the science behind a solar

Seedlings for the Future: Johnny Applesee Trees for Public Places
From The Publisher
Texas Flooding ARLO KALLEMEYN
The bicentennial of Illinois statehood is December 3, 2018. The Illinois State Historical Society is commemorating this birthday by offering a rare variety of tree—an apple tree with historic roots—to the counties of the state. School children (and those of us who were once school children) have learned the story of John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. Chapman traveled throughout the Midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio planting apple nurseries, using seeds from the cider mill near his Pennsylvania home. The Algeo family farm in Nova, Ohio, was one of his wayside stops and the tree planted there is the last known surviving tree planted by Chapman. Some claim it is a Rambo apple, but its traits are more those of an Albemarle Pippin, ripening is September and used for applesauce and baking. Guy Sternberg, director of Starhill Forest Arboretum, assisted in the choice of this tree for the ISHS project, after meeting Pat Algeo of Petersburg, a descendant of the Ohio farm family. Several years ago, the Famous and Historic Trees Program offered by American Forests provided these “Johnny Appleseed” trees to every state visited by Chapman in the early 19th century. The official Illinois tree was planted at Starhill Forest Arboretum in Petersburg with another tree being planted at Lincoln Memorial Garden. Fresh scionwood from the original tree has been used to propagate trees for every one of the 102 Illinois counties in 2018. The trees will be sold by the ISHS and may be purchased for $50 each (plus shipping). The Society asks that those individuals or groups purchasing the Johnny Appleseed trees make every effort to locate the trees on public land so that visitors to their county may enjoy the tree. Recommended sites would include courthouse grounds; public parks or cemeteries; museum grounds; libraries; and historic garden sites. Each tree will be accompanied by a letter of authentication from the Society and the arboretum. Trees will be shipped to the ISHS office in October, 2017, and will be available at that time. Please call 217-525-2781, ext. 4, to reserve a tree. Your phone call before October 1, 2017, will guarantee receipt of a tree.

You probably have seen the news on TV about the flooding in the Houston, Texas area from Hurricane Harvey. Some neighborhoods were inundated with over 6 feet of water flowing into homes and businesses. There is more rain on the way, but the damage is already done. After these folks get to safety many will learn the terrible news that their homeowner’s insurance does not cover flooding. Standard homeowner’s insurance policies cover damage from the high winds that are associated with a hurricane, but they don’t cover damage from rain or flood waters, such as storm surges or overflowing rivers. The National Hurricane Center forecasted up to 40 inches of rain in some locations due to the storm, which could bring flooding far beyond the Texas coastline. Figures from the National Flood Insurance Program show that only 15% of homes in Harris Country, which includes Houston, have flood insurance, while only 20% of homes in Nueces County, where the coastal city of Corpus Christi is located, are covered. Coverage rates are higher in the area’s flood zones, but many homes still aren’t covered. “If the homeowner is not required to buy flood insurance by their mortgage lender, they often chose not to,” said Michael Barry, spokesman for the Insurance Information Institute, a consumer education group funded by the insurance industry. He adds that there is a widely-held misconception that homeowners who aren’t in floodplains can’t get coverage. “Almost all homeowners can get coverage,” he said. If you are able to send financial help to the residents of Texas, here is information from 3 very reputable disaster relief organizations. They will make the most of any donation, large or small, to help the people of Texas during this difficult time. • American Red Cross: To donate visit redcross.org, call 1- 800-RED CROSS or text the word HARVEY to 90999 to make a $10 donation. • The Salvation Army: To donate visit givesalvationarmy. org or call 1-800-725-2769. • Catholic Charities USA: Visit catholiccharitiesusa.org to donate. South Holland continues to be one of the most desirable places to live in the south suburbs. While so many other towns and villages have slowly become mere bedroom communities—places for people to eat and sleep while they aren’t at work someplace else—South Holland retains it’s character as a great place to live and work. One of the things that helps to make South Holland the great community it is, is the South Holland Business Association. SHBA, or as it’s fondly pronounced, ShaBah, is all about promoting a lively business environment. As Alexandra Glumac, SHBA Secretary, says, “SHBA will help you get started in business, help you stay in business, help you grow your business, and give you a forum to help others in business.” SHBA is a place to network, to forge business relationships, to spread the word about what you do, and to take advantage of the tools available to help your business grow. SHBA is a source for information, research and guidance, and can help educate you about doing business in South Holland, Cook County and Illinois. SSHBA can advocate for and promote your business. “We want to be your cheerleader,” affirms Glumac. Some join just to keep an eye on the competition, only to find out there’s so much more to know. Think of SHBA as the grapevine where you can get a heads up on what’s happening, as it’s happening—and often before. In your fellow members, you have a pool of vendors for your every need: from copiers and business machines, to home medical care, to succession
planning services, to catering. Members who have been around the block can help you over a bump in the road. And of course there are the many perks, such as discounts and special deals that members ofter to members. Here are some of the great tools SHBA makes available to members: • A printed business directory booklet goes out to all South Holland residents, with SHBA members prominently highlighted in color. • The SHBA website lists members alphabetically and by category, so potential customers can find you quickly. Post openings on the job board to find qualified candidates. Keep up with SHBA happenings with the Calendar of Events; make SHBA a cohost and have your event listed. • The Intercom, SHBA’s online newsletter, has local business news and updates about member businesses, as well as notes from the last member luncheon. Members can advertise in the newsletter as well. Resources include links to other professional organizations so you can further connect and grow. • The SHBA Facebook page keeps South Holland businesses in the public eye. • EBlasts keep members up on community goings-on twice a month. • Text Alerts can keep you up-to-the minute about happenings. • Host a Business Before Hours or Business After Hours event at your workplace to build exposure. • SHBA Luncheons enable members to meet once a month to learn and exchange information and ideas.

New members are invited to stand up and introduce themselves and their businesses. Each luncheon has sponsors and everyone is invited to bring marketing materials to give away. A speaker shares on a broadly relevant topic, such as taxes, leadership, workplace communication, etc. And there’s always a drawing for door prizes. • Educational Scholarships are available to students entering their second year of college; members, their children, and their employees are eligible. This year 7 scholarships were awarded. • The Annual Golf Outing is the scholarship fundraiser, and is a great networking and deal-making venue. • The Annual Picnic takes place the 4th Thursday in July with fun, food, and great door prizes like Great America passes, golf passes, gift baskets and more. • The Annual Holiday Party in December is a very popular and well attended event—in fact, some companies use it as their own company Christmas party. • South Holland Community Center membership is half off for SHBA members. And—as if all that isn’t enough—in the works is a “Dream Team” of experts to answer member questions via the website, and a Trivia Night for fun and networking. SHBA is there for existing and new businesses alike, whether one-of-akind boutiques or big corporations. To learn more, contact Secretary Alexandra Glumac at 708-596-0065 or visit shba.org.

This pithy phrase, meaning “calm down, get hold of yourself)” is an Americanization of the British phrase “don’t have kittens.” Clearly, the effort of a heifer calving is presumed to be more strenuous (and therefore alarming) than a cat (usually calmly) giving birth.

REAL ID License Option Becomes Law in Illinois With the passage of Illinois House Bill 395, drivers can now apply for a driver’s license that meets federal REAL ID requirements and makes it easier for them to fly or visit federal facilities. The federal REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, establishes standards for issuing identification cards and prevents federal agencies from accepting identification cards from states that have not implemented the act’s requirements. Illinois received an extension from the federal government to become compliant by October, 2017. The Department of Homeland Security has said that by January, 2018, airline passengers with a driver’s license that is not compliant with the REAL ID Act will have to show an alternative form of identification to board a plane. Regular, non-compliant driver’s licenses and state IDs will still be available for those who don’t fly or visit federal facilities and have no need for the REAL ID compliant license/ID. State legislator Iris Y. Martinez (D-Chicago) said, “The twotiered system gives people the option to decide what’s best for them. If someone doesn’t need to fly or simply chooses to not go with the REAL ID-compliant license/ID card, then there is an option that will work for them.” To apply for a REAL ID-compliant card, the applicant must present documents including a certified copy of their birth certificate and immigration documents or a U.S. passport. These items are not required to apply for a regular license or ID card. House Bill 395 was passed on August 22, 2017 and took effect immediately.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer
Show Time… You Ready?” MIKE BUDER Despite recent stability we are still in a “Buyer’s Market.” If your home is for sale now there are some realities that you need to accept. With the current inventory levels and the fact that prices have dropped significantly. Over the past eight years buyers are being very discerning about what they will put up with. Today’s buyers will quickly move on to greener pastures if a property does not click immediately. In this environment buyers do not have much patience with the following: CIGARETTE SMOKE. Since many areas are smoke free these days people have become much more sensitive to the smell of it. CLUTTER OR MESS. It takes a special person to be able to see past piles of magazines, books, knick-knacks and too much furniture. OUTDATED DÉCOR. Flowered wallpaper, shag carpeting and dark paneling. These specialty items were great in their time but not many want to live with them now. DARK INTERIORS. Upon entering a house the first thing I do is open all heavy drapes and let the sun in. It may be considered a person’s castle, but no one wants to view a dark home. OVERPOWERING COLORS. Paint is a small investment to make if your home has loud colors in every room. Those colors may be your unique style but a neutral palette is something more people can work their imagination around. PET OR COOKING ODORS. One of the problems with odors is that the owner is usually accustomed to them. If you have any doubt, get an independent opinion. OVERGROWN LANDSCAPING AND A POOR ENTRANCE. These items will often prevent someone from ever getting through the door. Buyers may just cross it off their list just from the drive-by. INFLEXIBILITY WITH SHOWING. If agents have a difficult time showing your home you need to know how much this can impair its potential sale. With so many properties available, they just may not bother to try for a second time. Now more than ever, your home needs to shine—because you will never have a second change to make a good first impression. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000, (708) 418-4444. E-mail: mikebuder@remax.net Website: www.BuderHomes.com. Saved Client $171.90 WOODROW WILCOX On Friday, August 18, 2017, I got a phone call from a happy client. He told me that his billing problem was resolved. He got a reimbursement check for the partial payment that he had made for services. Then, he called the medical service to ask about the rest of the bill and was told his balance was zero. A few weeks earlier, I had met with him and reviewed his medical bill problem. We phoned Medicare to learn some details together. Then, we wrote a letter to his doctor. In that letter we told the doctor that Medicare had denied a service because the doctor (or his staff) did not give a diagnostic code with the claim to support the medical need for the service. We asked the doctor to refile that part of the claim with Medicare for corrected processing. My helping this client

RICHARD ZEKVELD Our floor began to warp. Laminate pieces curled up around the edges. I tore out a piece of laminate to find water lurking below. The dishwasher, we discovered, had a slow leak. I tore out more laminate. That patch of wetness extended far beyond the area of visible damage. By now I’d torn out the laminate from half our kitchen. The damage didn’t just go wide. It went deep as well. Now Nancy and I were archaeologists, peeling up layers of history in our old house. Below the laminate, classic linoleum from 1970-something. Below that, a layer of quarter-inch strandboard, anchored with hundreds of staples. Ugh. Below that, vintage linoleum from 1920 or 1930-something, well-glued to… whoa! an original hardwood maple floor! But the damage had gone deep. Nearest the dishwasher, water and mold had penetrated all layers to rot the hardwood

itself. It occurred to us that this leak hadn’t started last week or even last month. It had been going on for a long, long time, undetected thanks to layers of concealment. Like water under flooring, unresolved pain, shame and guilt from our past can seep and fester for years below layers of concealment. The hidden damage they do to our lives goes broad and deep. Eventually, they surface under pressure. This is a painful mercy, meant to drive us to Christ, our Maker and Remodeler. Invite him in, and he will start peeling up the layers to expose and deal with the mess. This will involve some painful revelation and ripping. But it’s the path to restoration. Below it lies the original flooring he installed in your life. It’s just begging to be sanded and stained into a thing of renewed beauty.

GOD WITH US
Make America . . . ANNA M. CAISON Note: This is a repeat of last weeks article, with revisions. The unfolding events during and following the alt-right riots in Charlottesville feels like watching a trailer to the future arrival of the anti-Christ. When he appears, the whole world will be fooled by his speeches and plans for a one world government except the elect of God. Not too many African-Americans were fooled by Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again.” We knew it was a code for “Make America White Again.” Every time a Black person expressed what was behind the president’s slogan, they were accused of throwing the race card. Despite the white washing of American history that we’ve all been taught in school, my generation grew up with great-grandparents, and grandparents who experienced slavery and Jim Crow Laws; plus, we experienced firsthand discrimination in accessing higher education and employment in white-collar jobs, so we understood what was being implied in the 2016 election. President Trump’s 7-month reign in the White House has revealed that most American citizens are more righteous in the eyes of God than our government and the Conservative Evangelicals that support them. Across our nation Americans marched in solidarity against the rise of the alt-right’s (neo-Nazi, white

supremacy, white nationalists) attack on the Constitution in Charlottesville. Less than a handful of GOP leaders condemned Trump’s weak response to the cause of the riot that led to the death of 1 and 19 injured. Concerned Americans have been posting photos of persons who engaged in the altright riots to Facebook. As of this writing at least 3 have lost their jobs. CEOs who were apart of the president’s Manufacturing Council withdrew after Trump’s back tracking on the Charlottesville violence. These are powerful first steps in confronting racism lurking within our government. I read an interesting article about General Robert E. Lee. ( https://finance. yahoo.com/news/robert-e-lee-thoughtconfederate-220734970.html ). General Lee was against the making of monuments of the civil war. He believed them to be divisive against the unity of the country. Lee “supported getting rid of the confederate flag” and “erasing battlefields from the landscape altogether.” There was no confederate flag draping his casket, and he was not buried in his confederate Union because, it would have been considered treason. Today, we live in the aftermath of what Lee feared. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: A real estate agent cane to my home recently to evaluate my home and give me an estimate of value. He told me my home needed to be decluttered & made to look sparkling clean. He was a nice person, but I was insulted by his insinuation that my home needed more cleaning. My home may not be updated but my house is clean. Are all you real estate agents this rude? Answer: You called a Realtor for advice and a selling price for your home. So, let’s make sense of what you are saying. You said he was a nice person, so obviously he wasn’t rude. Your home is cluttered & not updated. He told you to declutter & to make your home Sparkling clean for showings and you are upset with his advice? Any good Realtor would give you this advice. Our job is to sell your home for the best possible price, at the least expense to you & in the shortest possible amount of time. By telling you to declutter, your home will look larger, which will help you in obtaining a higher selling price and it will look nicer and more appealing to a buyer. By making your home sparkling clean, your home will look refreshed & more attractive to buyers. Sparkling clean will

make your home look and feel newer, which will make up for some of that updating you chose not to do. All this “rudeness” creates a bigger demand for your home and basic economics dictates that demand increases prices. The alternative would be for him to say your home looks wonderful and it needs nothing. The result would be a home that sits on the market longer and begs for a low offer. My advice would be to listen to your Realtor. He is a professional who works for you and only wants the best for you. Stop being so sensitive and spend your energy decluttering and making your home Sparkling clean. Sounds like excellent, inexpensive & sparkling advice to me. Financial Advice Column
Are You a “Hardworking” Investor? BOB KRYGSHELD Next week, we observe Labor Day, a celebration of the American worker. You work hard your whole life with the hope that your efforts will ultimately allow you to achieve your financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But for that to happen, you may need to apply some of the lessons of the workplace to your efforts as an investor. So, what are these lessons? Here are a few to consider: Be consistent. The most successful workers are the ones who show up, day after day, and strive to overcome the inevitable obstacles that crop up. As an investor, you, too, need to be consistent in your habits—which means you should keep investing in all types of markets. If you take a “time out” every time the market drops, you might end up missing opportunities when the next rally begins. Be flexible. When good workers see that something is not going well, they change what they’re doing. And when you invest, you also may need to make adjustments. If an investment has consistently underperformed, or if you have too many others very similar to it, or if it just doesn’t meet your needs anymore, you may be better off by selling it and using the proceeds to invest elsewhere. This doesn’t mean you should constantly be buying and selling—in fact, you’ll likely be better off by purchasing quality investments and holding them for the long term. But you need to be flexible enough to make the appropriate moves at the appropriate times. Be informed. The best workers are those

As always, Linda cuts her grass on the weekends with her power mower. She was doing so last weekend, just mowing along when she spotted a small mound in the grass. She thought it might just be a mole underground and ran the mower over it—releasing a swarm of bees that totally engulfed her! Batting them away from her face and hair, she managed to finish cutting the grass but with multiple stings to her legs (she was wearing capris)! Ouch! Moral of the story—check out the lawn first before cutting for any telltale partially hidden bee or hornet nests. ***

The program feeds 3,000 families residing in the township. Inset Photo: Boxes of Summer Snack Packs are prepared to be distributed to families with school-age children. The new Snack Pack program is a back-to school initiative provided by the pantry to help local parents with back-to-school food items. Photos: Ernst Lamothe, Jr. and Patricia Muhammad
By Patricia Muhammad While students in the area prepare to return back-to-school, the Township Food Pantry, located at 15430 Page Avenue in Harvey is working hard to make sure families, and local students will be well-nourished throughout the school year. According to the food pantry Assistant Manager, Anthony Christmas, the pantry serves the whole of Thornton Township including Harvey, Dolton, South Holland, Markham, Calumet City, among others. Christmas stated that 3,000 families in the area receive food assistance through the pantry and that the food program serves as a lifesaver for single parents. During Thornton Township’s back-toschool season, the pantry now offers a new box for children called the ‘Snack Pack.’ Christmas said, “One of the things that we do provide is the Snack Pack. It’s something new that we just introduced. It’s just a party in a pack—to take the pressure off of going back-to-school. Frank Zuccarelli (ThorntonTownship Supervisor), passes them out to the parents. As the parents come in, they receive an orange pass that explains what’s in the pack. The principle is that the box has the nuance of a little party. In the pack are hot dogs, ketchup, mustard, potato chips, freeze pops and other things.” On the township’s website, the food assistance mission states that the food program seeks to serve the needs of the community and to answer the needs of the community for food assistance. Food pantries across the country are a saving grace for many families and individuals who have fallen on hard times. Christmas stated that food assistance programs often carry a negative image associated with poverty “People are embarrassed to come here because of the stereotype of needing food,” he said. Food pantries not only provide food for families, but pantries also offer programs to community residents to keep them afloat during financial hardship. Ernst P. Lamothe, Jr., community relations manager for Thornton Township, said, “We

If residents qualify, they become our clients, and qualified residents will receive a box once a month. Family size is the criteria that determines the portions and box size that residents receive.” According to Christmas, Walt’s Food Center, Sam Food Club, Jewels, and Aldi are large grocers who contribute to the pantry; providing nutritional food packages for residents, “We have what we call ‘food rescue, where they provide us with quality meats and vegetables,” he said.
