Clearly teacher Cynthia Wilson adds the magic touch to professional care—the infants were alert and peaceful.

_______________________________ By Erin Nauta Tucked away on the campus of Thornton Township High School is the ICC—Infant Care Center. Inside are laughing, happy toddlers and content babies being cared for by patient, skilled childcare workers. For each child in the daycare, a teenager is able to stay in school. ICC is a licensed professional daycare center. All childcare workers are staff, registered with the Illinois Gateways Professional Development System. They have training from Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) with yearly updates, and DCFS comes out for yearly inspections. All staff are CPR certified. Each room has a teacher and an aide; two aides for the infant room. The center is outfitted with a fully equipped nursery, classrooms, playroom, kitchen, library, and offices. Each classroom has a schedule, with structured activities and nap times. The center is in the process of adding a lending library of books and hands-on activity toys for families to check out, and is currently accepting book donations. The center is housed in a former athletic facility, which is solid, but snug; there are plans to move into a more spacious facility in a couple of years. The facility hours are coordinated to school hours, opening at 6:30 am and closing at 3 pm. A bus goes to the teens’ homes, picks up the parents and children, and brings them to the ICC facility, where it waits for the parents to settle their children into their rooms. Sometimes ICC has breakfast waiting for the parents. The bus then takes the parents to their respective schools. During the day, the babies get 2 snacks a day as well as lunch. There are indoor

and outdoor play areas, so the kids get exercise, rain or shine. In nice weather, little ones get a stroller ride outdoors. At the end of the day, the bus collects the parents from school, brings them back to ICC for their babies, and takes them home. The bus is already outfitted with infant and child car seats so the parents don’t have to bring them. In addition to the daily routine, agencies such as Family Enrichment organize activities and field trips for the mothers and babies, and on a recent family field trip, the grandparents came as well. The center encourages the involvement of both parents, and grandparents as well. Recruitment for the program includes information tables at the high schools during orientation to promote ICC. There’s an ICC open house so students can take a tour of the facility. During the school year, campus nurses and counselors will refer students to ICC. During the summer, ICC staff go to doctor’s offices, WIC offices, and into the neighborhoods, posting fliers about the program and encouraging professionals to refer teen parents. Staff even strike up conversations with pregnant teens they meet and tell them about the program. Most students are referred while still pregnant, though the center accepts toddlers up to three years old. There’s an application process and the teens are invited to come visit the facility. When the baby is six weeks old, it can enter the program. Founded in 1985, the program has been in existence for 32 years. A true pioneer, ICC was the first center of it’s kind in the state of Illinois. The center’s population of babies goes up and down as older babies leave and new infants come in, but on the whole, the

number of babies has remained fairly constant through the years. Though it’s a daycare center, it’s very much about the parents as well. As the center has identified needs, it has added services. The program helps the teen parents to keep up with baby health care and immunizations. At times, when Thornton HS high school has offered childcare classes, students have been able to come into the center to help with the children, for credit. There is an annual reading competition for parents and grandparents to read to their babies, with awards presented at a Family Reading Night in November. The center comes up with family events throughout the year, and there’s a special effort made to involve fathers and grandfathers. As graduation nears, ICC helps the teens transition into post-school life with career and college workshops. ICC serves teen parents not only from Thornton HS, but also Thornwood HS, Thornridge HS, Outlook Academy, AFL in Riverdale, Country Club Hills Tech and Trade, and South Suburban College. The center accepts children between the ages 6 weeks to 3 years old. Director Angie James, previously a classroom teacher, came to ICC nearly two years ago. She has found it very rewarding; for every child in ICC, a student has the opportunity to graduate rather than drop out. James shares that of four recent graduates, two are in college, while two others have started working. She wants teens to know that just because they’ve become parents, doesn’t mean their education has to come to an end. ICC is here to help! For more information, call 708-225-4036 or email James.Angie@district205.net.

Secretary of State Cautions Investors to Watch For Scams in Wake of Hurricane Harvey In the wake of widespread damage caused by Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey in Texas, Secretary of State Connie Lawson is cautioning investors to watch out for opportunistic investment scams. “As we are seeing in Texas, natural disasters bring out the best in people, with neighbors helping neighbors. Unfortunately, we know from experience that disasters also can bring out the worst in people, particularly those seeking to profit from the misfortune of others,” Secretary Lawson said. “Unsolicited investment offers seeking to capitalize on the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey should be approached with extreme caution.” The Secretary of State’s office urges investors to watch for red flags of hurricane-related scams, including unsolicited email, social media messages, crowd-funding pitches or telephone calls promoting investment pools or bonds to help storm victims, water-removal or purification technologies, electricity-generating devices and distressed real estate remediation programs. Scam artists also may linger to prey on storm victims who anticipate receiving large lump-sum insurance settlements. “The potential for fraud remains even after the skies have cleared. Be wary of any promoter promising quick and high returns on your investments,” Indiana Securities Commissioner Alex Glass said. The Secretary of State’s office also cautions about fraudulent charitable solicitations that prey on the goodness of people seeking to help those in need. “The best advice is to do your research. As with any charitable contribution, those who want to contribute to relief efforts should send contributions to only those charities with an established track record of making sure the donations get to the victims,” Secretary Lawson said. The Secretary of State’s office offers three tips to help investors avoid disaster-related scams: · Hang up and Delete. Delete unsolicited emails and social media messages and hang up on aggressive cold callers promoting hurricane-related investments, especially those from small companies touting unproven or new technologies or products. · Use common sense. Claims of guaranteed returns or low/no investment risk are classic red flags. Every investment involves some degree of risk. · Do your homework. Contact the Secretary of State’s office to check that both the seller and investment are licensed and registered. If not, they may be operating illegally. Contact information is available on the agency’s website at www. in.gov/sos.

RICHARD ZEKVELD It was a tough flight. This flight attendant had had enough. He grabbed the intercom and cussed out the passengers. Then, with flair, he exited the aircraft, down the emergency chute. Some say he had a beer in each hand. Then he drove home.1 Let’s be honest. There are moments we wish we had this guy’s guts. There are moments we would love to follow his lead. dinging and ringing. Our culture needs courtesy more than ever! First, let’s praise it where we find it. The cashier who treats you with grace, though just treated rudely by the customer ahead of you—acknowledge him. Second, let’s remember the courtesy of greeting. “Morning!” Make eye contact. Smile. Yes, even when you don’t feel like it. That’s courtesy, not hypocrisy. Third, address rudeness with kindness—even if it must be firm kindness. You don’t know what kind of day—or life—this person has had. Finally, remember the teaching of Jesus: “Do to others what you would have them do to you” (Matthew 7:12b). Try it. And don’t be surprised when your attitude follows your actions. And when others begin to respond likewise. 1 See Peggy Noonan’s August 13, 2010 Wall Street Journal article ‘We Pay Them to Be Rude to Us’.

“Homes are Bought–Not Sold” MIKE BUDER Many of the people who list their homes with me already experienced failure with a prior broker. They often tell me that they were frustrated with the “lack of selling” they witnessed with the agents who showed their homes. “The agents who show the home just walk through and hardly say anything about the house. Why aren’t they pushing the sale? Don’t they want to make a sale?” Sellers first need to understand the process that a 2017 buyer goes through in the selection of a home. They don’t want to be “sold”. This is not a home-o-matic that comes with free steak knives, if you act now. This is a six-figure decision in an unreliable economy that will house their family. Homeowners that follow them around peppering them with data about the storage under the stairs, an anecdote about the wall oven and dozens of other well meaning tidbits are viewed as a distraction and nuisance. Buyer agents are not talkative because they know their buyer clients. They know the buyers are studying it. They are soaking it in. They are seeing if it fits them. They are accessing how they look in it and that’s hard to do with someone in your space the whole time. If it feels like home, they’ll

Wanted Wanted: Diabetic Test Strips Freestyle Lite One Touch Accu-Chek Contour and Others, Must be sealed,

gladly take the data sheet with all the improvements the owner wanted to ram down their throat in the first 15 seconds they walked in. If it doesn’t feel like home, no list will matter because it’s off their list. Homeowners are wise not to be present for showings. Let the buyer’s agent do their job. If you are an owner and you have a pitch you feel works for the house, write it up and print it for the buyer to take with them so they can reference it quietly, at their own pace, and without pressure on their own terms. In today’s market, homes are bought, not sold. If it doesn’t feel like home in the first place, you’ll never talk them into buying it. Let the buyer try it on and see how it fits in peace. Let them study it without noise and stay out of their way. My results say this is the way to go. If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000, (708) 418-4444. South Holland Public Library’s annual Summer Library Challenge was a huge success. Over 900 kids, teens, and adults were able to participate in contests, activities, and programs all summer long. The schedule of events included a variety of popular shows and topics including performances by the Jesse White Tumblers and Mo Street Blues. None of these activities would have been possible without the generous contributions of the following sponsors: Applebee’s, Brookfield Zoo, Buddig, Chicago Fire, Chicago Sky, Culver’s, Holland Printing, Jewel-Osco, JMA Architects, Larry DeYoung and Associates, Legoland, Oberwies Dairy, Providence Bank and Trust, Walt’s Food Center, and the Windy City Thunderbolts. Thanks to their support, the Library was able to create a dynamic and exciting Summer Library Challenge.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our Home is not selling. Can you make some suggestions? Answer: When you first listed your home with your real estate agent, he or she probably gave you some advice, but if you’re like a lot of sellers, you probably didn’t follow it. Now, it’s three months later, and you’ve had few showings and no offers. Your real estate agent warned you that the market is tough, that buyers are picky, and that you’ll have to do some work to get your home to “show” well. While no real estate agent will say, “I told you so,” you might hear a little voice in your head saying it anyway. So what can you do to help the situation? Here are six I Told You So’s: You didn’t listen to your agent when you were told that you’re asking too much money. Sit down with your real estate agent and hammer out a new price strategy to attract more buyers. Buyers don’t like overstuffed rooms, knickknacks, and toys everywhere. Stuff is stuffing - it just makes your house look smaller, dated and storage-deprived. So pack anything that isn’t absolutely necessary for daily living and put it in storage. Your Home needs painting. Pick a nice neutral color. Take everything you can out of the rooms to be painted, cover and start painting. Put back only what is sleek, new

looking, and in great condition. Anything else doesn’t need to be seen by buyers, it will only drag down your home’s appearance. Do those repairs. Yes, buyers noticed that your house wasn’t in tiptop condition. Replace the exterior rotted wood, brighten the rooms with higher watt bulbs, fix that leak and anything else that got you negative feedback from previous showings. Stage the house. Having a room do too much confuses buyers and makes the home look inadequate. Don’t put office equipment in the bedroom. Set a nice tone for showings by putting out pretty place settings and just make the home look inviting. Clean everything. A thorough cleaning is essential to remove the daily odors and stains of living. Kitchens and baths are the two areas where eat-off-the-floor cleanliness is called for A clean, well-maintained home impresses everyone. If you value your home, show it and others will value it, too! ANNA CONIGLIO, ND cells of the liver become damaged. The results? Liver toxicity. Healing chronic inflammation doesn’t look the same for everyone. You need to REMOVE what’s causing inflammation in the first place and then HEAL the damage done. Yes, this will take considerable time, so be patient as you won’t regret the improved lifestyle you can enjoy. Changing habits, eating nourishing foods, listen to your body, and given time to heal is important. The damage didn’t happened over night, so to expect quick results cannot be possible and cause frustration. Relying on medication alone will not eliminate the problem or improve your health. Fortunately this problem can be solved naturally without side effects. My goal is, of course, to help relieve pain by getting to the root cause and creating and individualized plan. No Excuses. Don’t take your health for granted! If you feel you aren’t sure where to start, I suggest to call for an appointment or convenient on line scheduling. What happened the last time you experienced pain in your body? Did you reach for an ibuprofen or took a trip to your doctor for a prescription drug? If so, you may have suppressed the most essential bodily function for healing. Too often we choose to medicate our pain with drugs like Advil, Tylenol in attempt to relieve the discomfort. What you might not know inflammation it’s our natural warning signal to alert us, that a body part needs attention. Unfortunately, when chronic inflammation remain for long periods of time and not addressed adequately, that leads to degenerative conditions, such as coronary artery disease, arthritis, cancer and others. Suppressing inflammation with drugs, your body is unable to detoxify, repair and protect itself. It’s important to know that anti-inflammation drug is with a lot of side effects. Anybody on a prescription antiinflammatory medication, is required by their physician to take liver function blood test, periodically. Why? Because the drugs are suppressing not only the chronic inflammation, which causes pain, but also the primary pathway of inflammation, which is responsible for detoxing our cells. When the liver is unable to detox, then the

Financial Advice Column

Brighten Your Grandchildren’s Financial Future BOB KRYGSHELD National Grandparents Day, observed on Sept. 10, has gained in popularity. If you’re a grandparent, you might expect to receive some nice cards, but if you want to make the day especially meaningful, you may want to consider giving some long-lasting financial gifts to your grandchildren. What might come to mind first, of course, is helping your grandchildren pay for college. You can choose from several college savings vehicles, but you may be especially interested in a 529 savings plan. With a 529 plan, your earnings accumulate tax free, provided they are used for qualified higher education expenses, such as tuition, books, and room and board. (Keep in mind that 529 plan distributions not used for qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state income taxes and a 10% IRS penalty on the earnings.) You may be eligible for a state income tax incentive for contributing to a 529 plan. Check with your tax advisor regarding these incentives, as well as all tax-related issues pertaining to 529 plans. Plus, a 529 plan is flexible: If your grandchild decides against college, you can transfer the plan to another beneficiary. Generally, a 529 plan owned by a grandparent won’t be reported as an asset on the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), but withdrawals from the plan are treated as untaxed income to the beneficiary (i.e., your grandchild)— and that has a big impact on financial aid, a much bigger impact than if the plan was listed as a parental asset. Beginning with the 2017-2018 academic year, however, FAFSA now

requires families to report income from two years before the school year starts, rather than income from the prior calendar year. Consequently, it might be beneficial, from a financial aid standpoint, as a grandparent, to start paying for college expenses from a 529 plan in the year in which your grandchild becomes a junior. Contact a financial aid professional about the potential financial aid impact of any gifts you’re considering. You might also consider giving them shares of stock, possibly held in a custodial account, usually known as an UTMA or UGMA account. One possible drawback: You only control a custodial account until your grandchildren reach the age of majority, at which time they can use the money for whatever they want. Still, your grandchildren might be particularly interested in owning the stocks contained in the custodial account— most young people enjoy owning shares of companies that make familiar products. And to further interest your grandchildren in a lifetime of investing, you may want to show them how a particular stock you’ve owned for decades has grown over time. Naturally, you’ll also want to let them know that stocks can move up and down in the short term, and there are no guarantees of profits – but the long-term growth potential of stocks is still a compelling story. The Humorous Side of God Africa is the cradle of humanity. It’s where our existence began. The first humans were dark-skinned people! (http://www. smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/ h ow - a f r i c a - b e c a m e - t h e - c r a d l e - o f humankind-108875040/ ; http://news. nationalgeographic.com/2015/09/150911hominin-hominid-berger-homo-naledifossils-ancestor-rising-star-humanorigins/) Dr. Keith Cheng, a Professor of Pathology, recently confirmed through genetic research what scientists have theorize for years; white/light-skinned people mutated from black/dark-skinned people. Does this mean that black-skinned people are superior to white-skinned people? No! It means black-skinned people are not inferior to white-skinned people, they are equal. We are all created in the image of God; the offspring of Adam. All of us have the capacity to do good, and to do evil. All of us, because of sin, have fallen short of the glory of God. And all of us are eligible to receive His gift of eternal life. There is only one race, human. We’re many nations, but one race. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . GOD WITH US

In all my years as a student of the Bible, I’ve never heard a sermon or attended a class where the subject focused on the humor of God. God has been described as a God of love, a God of grace and mercy, a kind God, a good God, a faithful God, forgiving, patient, even a God of wrath. But I have never heard anyone speak on God having humor, even though Psalm 2 states “God laughs.” There are passages in the Bible that makes me think that God does have a humorous side. For example, take Balaam who unjustly beats his donkey (Numbers 22:22-33). Can you imagine the look on Balaam’s face when the donkey asked (paraphrasing), “What’s your problem, haven’t I been a good donkey to you?” The conversation is hilarious! I read an article last week that caused me to ponder again the possibility of a humorous side of God when confronting man’s ignorance and/or rejection of truth. Following the Charlottesville riot, white supremacists took DNA testing to prove the purity of their whiteness. The results were too funny! It showed that they were part African! Like Hitler, they’re trying to destroy the very people that gave them life. (To those who may not know, Hitler was part Jew http://www.history.com/news/ study-suggests-adolf-hitler-had-jewishand-african-ancestors.) Since 1924, irrefutable studies prove that

Take Those Down; Put These Up ARLO KALLEMEYN There have been talks and demonstrations to take down the Confederate statues around the country. That is all well and good, but what about the empty places that will result? There will be vacant spaces just begging for a new statue. In this country we like nothing if not a good statue with a brass plaque that the school kids can read and write a report on. If we take down all the Confederate statues, here are some Americans that deserve to be remembered. Abraham Lincoln – He saved the Union, freed the slaves, and presided over America’s second founding. Martin Luther King – His dream of racial equality is still elusive, but no one did more to make it real. Thomas Edison – It wasn’t just the lightbulb; Edison was the most prolific inventor in American history. John D. Rockefeller – The man behind Standard Oil set the mold for our

tycoons—first by making money, then by giving it away. Henry Ford – He gave us the assembly line and the Model T, and sparked America’s love affair with the automobile. Orville and Wilbur Wright. They got us all off the ground. Alexander Graham Bell – By inventing the telephone, he opened the age of telecommunications and shrank the world. Jackie Robinson – He broke baseball’s color barrier and embodied integration’s promise. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark – They went west to explore, and millions followed in their wake. Elvis Presley – The king of rock and roll. Enough said. Lassie. That most famous farm dog who acted better than a lot of adults. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of a good statue.

BRANDI SMITS The Girl Who Drank the Moon By Kelly Barnhill For hundreds of years, the citizens of the Protectorate have lived in fear of the old witch that lives deep in the forest. The town has since learned to keep her at bay, even though it is the most horrible act imaginable. Every year, the youngest baby in the Protectorate is left in the forest by the Council of Elders as an offering to the witch, guaranteeing another year of safety for the rest of the town. Our story starts with a young Elder-in-Training named Antain on his first Day of Sacrifice. Antain really disliked this whole tradition and was nervous to begin with. However, once the event actually happened and he had to take the small baby from her mother and leave her in the forest, he realized that there was no way that he could continue to do so from year to year. The baby, who had an odd moon-shaped birthmark on her head, was not left for death. You see, there truly was a witch that lived in the woods. Her name is Xan. But Xan did not take the children and eat them or whatever other rumor was spreading through the Protectorate. Instead, she rescued the abandoned babies and

took them to other cities far from the Protectorate to be adopted by loving families. Xan did just that with the birthmarked baby. As usual, she reached up to the night skies to grab some bits of stars to feed the baby. Although this time Xan missed and fed the baby moonlight instead. The baby was now enmagicked. Xan could not leave a magicwielding child with just any family. She decided to keep her and raise her as her granddaughter. She named her Luna. As Luna grew older, magic came easy for her. So easy that she didn’t quite know she was doing it. So Xan decided to hide her magic until she turned 13 and could control it. However, the day that Luna’s magic would return was a day that several people’s lives would be permanently altered, not just Luna’s. Barnhill spins a magical story with several storylines that intersect in many ways. The use of alternating perspectives is seamlessly executed, connecting stories with hints and clues that lead the reader into solving a mystery that wasn’t even known at the start. This Newbery winner is a mustread for those enamored with magically battles of good versus evil.

Marsha Trammell of Dolton attended with her family from South Holland. She enjoys not only the food, performances and music but also the multicultural aspect of the event. “I enjoy learning about other cultures through the entertainment and also socializing with other people in attendance.” Margaret Williams came to the taste with her granddaughter Tylerlynn and friend Heaven Kyle. They enjoy the entertainment, particularly Michael Jackson impersonator Rico. “At Thornton Township we want to offer our residents the best. It was just a great day of family fun and fellowship,” said Jerry Jones, Thornton Township trustee. “We value our community and we enjoy giving back in every way we can.”
