student, participated in the September 20th competition. He said, “Algebra II is usually a junior math course. However, Ms. Ramirez is an incoming freshmen. She’s coming straight out of eighth grade, and I’m excited about that.” Last year, Neeley, a Purdue University graduate and himself a former Thornton Wildcat, was successful in bringing Mu Alpha Theta, a National Mathematical Honor Society to School District 205. Mu Alpha Theta members get an opportunity during the summer to participate in math conventions held at participating universities. During the conventions, students discuss math and meet math professors. Bill Hedden, a Physics teacher at Thornridge High School, is also a Mathletes coach. He believes that Mathletes instills confidence in students’ math abilities. “As shocking as it is for some people, the students are having a lot of fun, and they are learning a lot. When they go through [their first] competition, they realize that they can do this.” According to Neeley, students will have another opportunity to compete in the Mathletes contest set for late January 2018 at Thornwood High School, where winning schools will receive trophies and ribbons.

By Patricia Muhammad On most school nights, students typically do homework or chat on their cell phones. However, on September 20th, more than 80 students from six participating schools spent their evening competing in the Southwest Suburban Conference (SWSC) Mathletes competition, held at Thornridge High School. The six participating high schools were Bolingbrook, Andrew, Lockport, Thornton, Thornridge, and Bradley. Raul Ibarra, a math teacher and head Mathletes Coach for Thornridge High School, said, “Their participation in Mathletes helps them raise their math grades up in class. Tonight is the first competition of the year... seeing kids do math and want to do math is exciting.” During the competition, students received written and verbal math exams, including vectors for seniors, series and systems for seniors, right triangle geometry for juniors, and linear equations, equalities and word problems for freshmen. Steve Neeley, who coaches freshman and sophomore Mathletes, has taught math at Thornton after 26 years. “The purpose of the program is for students to get together to understand and enjoy math,” he said. He noted that Kassandra Ramirez, an Algebra II Honors

John P. O’Donnell, long-time South Holland resident (1966), was a guest of Honor Flight Chicago’s 81st flight to view the U.S. war memorials in Washington D.C. John (82 years young) served in the U.S. Army from 19541957. He was stationed in Germany as a radar/radio operator. There were 109 veterans on this one-of-a-kind journey. The veterans were greeted back at Midway with an amazing Welcome Home celebration.

Calvary Academy Celebrates Family at Its Thornton Township Annual Picnic Celebrated Illinois Township Day
Calvary Academy students, families, faculty and staff line up on the field to spell their theme for the year : “We Are Family.” ________________________________________________
On September 16, 2017, Calvary Academy held its annual picnic for students and their families. More than 600 people gathered on a beautiful, sunny day as Calvary faculty and staff served those in attendance. The highlight of the picnic was the raffle hosted by Mrs. Pender, the school administrator. Many families were blessed with gift cards, a jeans day, free hot lunch for the year or free tuition for the month of December! To top the day off, a drone flew over-head to take a picture of everyone spelling out the
theme for this school year—“We Are Family.” In keeping with this theme, Pastor Brian Kamstra of Spirit of God Fellowship spoke at the first chapel service of the year, where he reminded students that we all belong to the body of Christ. He shared with them that as a family of believers, we all are different, but need each other to complete the whole body. He then had the students stand to commit this year to God and to encouraging and supporting each other. The teachers, staff and families are

excited to see what God has in store for Calvary this school year. A new banner has been hung in their foyer displaying the theme and bible verse for the year: “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially those who belong to the family of believers.” Calvary’s mission is to challenge its students to know Christ as Lord, teaching them to know and apply biblical truth, and training them to pursue academic excellence in order that they may engage and transform their world for Jesus Christ.

Thornton Township celebrated Illinois Township Day by offering a day full of activities and giveaways for residents. Activities included exercise classes and movie day at Riverdale, luncheons at five different locations, card games at the senior center in Calumet City and a dance for our residents with specials needs. A three-time Illinois Township of the Year including last year, Thornton Township helps residents through our nine departments: Clerk, Assessor, Youth and Family Service, Senior Service, Special Service, Community Relations, General and Food Assistance, Transportation, and ZAP. “We really value our residents and we want to continue giving them the best services available,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “Government should be about giving people what they need and that is something we do every day.” Township government has been around since 1636 and is the oldest existing unit of government on our continent today. It is a local government for the people; an administration close to home. Thornton Township, the largest township in the state, has about 185,000 residents. Thornton Township is made up of 17 communities. The towns included in these boundaries fully are: Burnham, Calumet City, Dixmoor, Dolton, East Hazel Crest, Phoenix, South Holland and Thornton. The towns that are partially located within the township boundaries are Blue Island, Glenwood, Harvey, Hazel Crest, Homewood, Lansing, Markham, Posen and Riverdale. The event also featured an employee appreciation day for more than 100 township employees. “At Thornton Township, I truly believe we have some of the best employees in the state,” said Zuccarelli. “Every day, they come to work knowing the responsibilities they have in making sure our residents are served well. And every day, they deliver outstanding customer service with compassion, dedication, laughter and a willingness to go the extra mile.”

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My wife and I are purchasing a condo. We were scheduled to close a day after the sellers, but were unable to because the lender did not complete the loan docs. However, the sellers turned the gas and electricity off the day we were scheduled to close. The utilities were off for several days. The broker told us the sellers did not have to leave the utilities on after we did our final “walk-through?” Do you agree? Answer: When you buy a property it must be delivered to you at closing in substantially the same condition as it was on the day the offer was accepted, perhaps 30 to 60 days earlier. It’s common for closing dates to change. For sellers, the best approach is to keep utilities on until title actually changes hands because the cost of utilities for a few additional days is minimal and the potential for damage in some climates can be large.
Coffee table, bevelled glass top, bottom support is metal, 52”l, x 26”w, x 19”h, $60 obo. 708-481-607 Stiffel and Rembrand brass floor lamps, $100 ea obo; Stiffel brass table lamps $25$40 ea; lamp shades, $5-$10 ea. 708-481-6907 Small white wood cabinet for bathroom or kitchen, 22” x 27” x 7”, $25. 708-481-6907 Down comforters sz twinking, $25-$35; feather & down pillows $5-$10; asst. throw pillows $2-$5 ea. 708481-6907
If there’s damage to the property as a result of discontinued utilities then you should ask an attorney to review the matter. Also, be sure to test all appliances and systems at the pre-settlement walkthrough. If the utilities are not on you have no way to know if appliances and systems work or if something is leaking. In this situation it may be prudent to require the establishment of an escrow fund at closing, money that will not be released to the seller until all systems and appliances can be tested and shown to be in working order. The Chinook – also known as king salmon – has been the top dog of Lake Michigan sport fishing since the moment it was introduced into the lake in the 1960s. It’s big – and it’s aggressive. These fish are on top of the food chain in the lake – and are used to doing whatever they want. When they make that one mistake of thinking that a shiny lure is really a baitfish, the real excitement begins. Frank Martin of Calumet Marine said, “The kings are in a class by themselves. For example, when you hook a lake trout, they come right to the surface. The kings? They want no part of coming to the back of the boat - or especially the net.” This particular king tore into a lure tipped with herring and the contest began. It burned hundreds of feet of line off the reel in a brave attempt to shake the hook, or break the line. After a tiring fight, the king realized who the boss really was - and was introduced to the long handled net at the back of Frank’s boat – Small Craft Warning. Frank and Denise Martin own Calumet Marine. A full-service boat repair and tackle shop located at 426 Burnham Ave, in Calumet City. You can visit them on the web at www.calumetmarine.com or phone 708-862.2407.

GOD WITH US
Like Light Through a Prism ANNA M. CAISON Whenever I see a prism I’m reminded of two things. One, I’m reminded of the marvel of childhood delightfully expressed through a young orphan named Pollyanna in the 1960 Disney movie, “Pollyanna.” After the death of her missionary parents, Polly is sent to live with her mother’s sister for whom Polly is named after. The entire town, including the church is under the control of Polly’s wealthy aunt. This makes for a very bitter and grumpy town. Polly meets a young boy from the town orphanage and follows him to a house where an old retired professor lives. In the course of the commotion of trespassing on private property and being caught by Professor Pendergrass, Polly discovers an amazing thing about the crystals hanging from the professor’s lamp. She learns that when the crystals are hung in sunlight they act like a prism reflecting the colors of the rainbow. Polly’s childlike fascination with refracted light has a powerful effect on the cranky professor and later, on the widowed cantankerous Mrs. Snow. They both are transformed into cheerful, outgoing and pleasant people. The second thing I’m reminded of when I
see a prism is how God uses science to teach us about Himself and us. What color is light? White, of course! But when light passes through a prism it separates into a rainbow of colors. So what color is light? The color of the rainbow! The Bible tells us that from Adam and Eve came all the people on the face of the earth. The various shades of humanity; black, brown, white, cream, came from the shade of one couple. What color was Adam and Eve? Given the possible location of the Garden of Eden, they probably were black skinned. God is Light (1 John 1:5), and all of humanity is created in His image. What color is His image? Just look around you! All the shades of humanity are the refracted colors of His Light. If we would become like children and process this truth with childlike faith, we could cross off racism on our list of sin to overcome. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Heart Smart RICHARD ZEKVELD Our culture increasingly consumes two things apart from relationship. One is sex. The other? Food. More than ever, America eats alone. Not just people who live alone. Even surrounded by others, many of us eat and drink alone. We eat alone together at home and in restaurants, absorbed in our own worlds, dripping grease on our devices. On the run, we exchange money for food through an open window, then consume it in haste as we navigate traffic. Or we ‘grab a bite’ on our way out the door, mumbling a muffled ‘hibye’ with our mouths full. Many of us can relate. I love to wander through Veterans’ Park on a holiday. People are hanging out, doing food and fellowship the way it’s supposed to be. Sounds of laughter and chatter mingle with the smells of smoke and deliciousness wafting from a hundred grills. Mmmmmm! I watch as people enjoy both food

preparation and consumption as social activities. Doing food together—let’s make it a lifestyle pattern. Let’s make room for regular, old-fashioned, face-to-face, devicefree fellowship over food. Let’s also make room at our tables for those who routinely eat alone. The dinner table was the heart of my childhood home. My faith and family relationships were forged there. I want the same for my family. And for all who find a place at our table. Finally, table fellowship provides built-in opportunities to acknowledge the Source of food and true fellowship. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil. My cup overflows” (Psalm 23:5). Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. From The Publisher
‘It’s Not My Fault!’ ARLO KALLEMEYN In the ‘It’s Not My Fault’ department, a woman from Ferndale Michigan is suing United Airlines after she was left alone on a plane for hours after it had landed. Ginger McGuire was aboard a United flight from Washington, DC to Philadelphia. She says she fell asleep during the flight. It landed shortly after midnight Tuesday, but no one woke her up until a cleaning crew found her four hours later. McGuire told reporters, “I fell asleep on the plane and next thing you know I wake up and it’s 4:00 in the morning. Nobody’s on the plane. Nothing.” She has hired a lawyer who is filing a lawsuit for false imprisonment, emotional distress and of course—negligence. This is actually good news for the rest of us. Now students who fall asleep in class can sue their teachers for depriving them of an education. Drivers who fall asleep at the wheel can sue the automobile industry for not shutting the car off automatically. Husbands who fall asleep when their wives are talking can sue Lazy Boy for making their chairs too comfortable. Fishermen who doze off can sue since the lure didn’t catch a fish on every cast. When golf and baseball move too slowly—well you get the idea. The Blackhawks who have opened their season will be exempt from any sleeping lawsuits since their games are so fast paced and entertaining. If you think back to when you fell asleep, you too will be able to think of somebody to sue. We should all thank Ginger for her generosity in sharing her new get-rich-quick idea. Thanks for reading our newspaper—please don’t sue me if you fall asleep reading it. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher

BOB KRYGSHELD Women are an integral part of the workforce, but they have had to overcome many obstacles along the way. Challenges still remain, but women’s success in the working world is worth commemorating – which will happen on American Business Women’s Day Sept. 22. Are you a woman considering “setting up shop” on your own? If so, here are five tips to consider: Balance your goals. It’s possible – perhaps even likely – that your business goals will conflict with your personal financial goals. After all, if you’re purchasing new equipment or services for your business, you’ve got less money – at least for the time being – to put away for your own retirement or your children’s education. Hopefully, your investment in your business will pay off in greater income, but, in any case, you will need to balance your personal and professional goals. Create a retirement plan. For your future financial security, it’s essential that you launch such a plan. Fortunately, small-business owners have a choice of plans, including an “owneronly” 401(k), SEP-IRA and SIMPLE IRA. Although the various plans have different requirements and contribution limits, they all offer tax-deferred earnings, which means your money has the opportunity to grow faster than if it were placed in a vehicle on which you paid taxes every year. (Taxes are due upon withdrawal, and withdrawals prior to age 59 ½ may be subject
to a 10% IRS penalty.) Plus, your contributions to a retirement plan may be tax deductible. Arrange for “backup.” Women are still more likely than men to drop out of the workforce for an extended period of time to care for young children or elderly parents. Consequently, you need to have someone you trust available to step in for you when your family obligations call you away from work. Design a succession plan. When you want to retire, would you like to keep the business in your family? If so, you’ll need to create a succession plan. Such a plan can be complex, so you will need to work with your legal and tax advisors – and give yourself plenty of time to work out the details. Build an emergency fund. Maintaining an adequate cash flow will always be a key task – one that involves your sales, billing cycles, inventory and other elements of your business. One way you can help yourself avoid troubles is to maintain an emergency fund consisting of a few months’ worth of your business expenses. Running your own business can be extremely rewarding, but it’s never going to be an easy road. However, with perseverance and careful planning, you can smooth out some of the bumps along the way — and give yourself reason to celebrate American Business Women’s Day. Happy Endings MIKE BUDER It’s not the offer starting price that matters; it’s the ending price! Some home negotiations are a sprint, others are a marathon. Some offers start close to list price, others are what is commonly called “low ball”. As participants in this home buying and selling dance, there’s probably as many different strategies as there are homes on the market. Can you keep it rational, or do you get spun up and let emotional reaction get in the way of selling your home? Part of a Realtor’s job is keeping everyone on an even keel, to continue negotiations to the point one side or the other decides not to proceed.... but that discontinuation should be because we couldn’t achieve that meeting of the minds on terms, NOT because one side is furious with the other! And the most likely source of emotional fuel has to be that initial offer price that supposed “low ball” price. Now here are 3 things to consider as a home seller: 1. They like your home enough to write an offer! 2. They like your home enough to write an offer! and 3. They like your home enough to write an offer! Get the point? There are lots of homes on the market and

they chose yours to try to buy! Don’t worry about their starting price; we only care about getting them to an acceptable end price! That acceptable end price can happen in one move or twenty small bumps! Let them dicker around; another offer just may come in that trumps their gamesmanship! That’s how buyers become educated fast! It’s critical that we don’t burn any bridges during the negotiations, so they feel comfortable coming back. So remember, not every offer will succeed. Try to keep the end point in mind with every offer. Don’t reject outright, counter on your terms. Keep communication open. Keep it civil. Keep the bridge open and unburned! It’s not the starting line that matters; it’s the FINISH LINE! If you are looking to buy or sell real estate call Mike Buder at RE/MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-mail: mikebuder@remax. net, Website: www. C A LUMET CIT Y PLUMBING’S MIK E GIGLIO A DDR ESSES CH A MBER BREAKFAST: The almost 30 people who attended September 20th’s Wednesday Calumet City Chamber Breakfast were t reated to bot h a wonder f u l, wa r m breakfast with all the trimmings, and the highly entertaining 2nd generation plumbing contractor Michael Giglio, who now leads Calumet City Plumbing. The company, which occupies t he 44,000 SF, 7 acre proper t y t hat had housed Hennessy Ford on River Oaks Drive, was founded by Mike’s Dad Frank Giglio, a former Calumet City Trustee and former Illinois State Representative, and his wife Ilene. Mike’s family has a long and storied connection to Calumet City. His maternal grandfather, Julius Hoffman, was the Calumet City Police and Fire C om m i s s i on e r d u r i n g t h e h e y d a y of the town—the 1940’s and 1950’s. He ser ved from 1940 to 1965. Calling his grandfather’s past participation some of the ‘fun facts’ of his talk, Giglio kept his guests enthralled. At once serious about his many and varied clientele (he does residential but mostly municipal business these days) he speaks with gentle humor and kindness about some of his more unusual plumbing jobs, and his sensitivity to his individual clients who may be very upset with a plumbing problem he can fix easily. He talked of learning the trade (all of his plumbers are union, and he has some 54 employees) from his father, a take no prisoners, hard liner who expected a job to be done right the first time, and of grooming his own son to follow in his footsteps. He also spoke of his pride of being in the Calumet Cit y Labor Day Liberty Parade with all of his employees ma rch i ng a long w it h h i m—tea m spirit, he called it. And he thanked the Mayor(Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush) and others in the current administration for help i n get t i ng t he proper t y h is business now stands on. Mike is pictured here with the Mayor and Calumet city C h a m b er P r e sident Ja ne Row l a nd . The meeting was held at the Calumet City Public Librar y where Rowland is also President. The next Calumet City Chamber meeting will be on Wednesday October 25th, 2017. Guest speaker will be Mary E. Tyler of the Thornton Township Senior Center, on 55 Alive Driving Tips for Seniors. ***

the claim incorrectly. The only reason this bill has not been paid yet is because of the mistakes that your firm made. Our client is a senior citizen who has Medicare as his primary insurer. If you are contracted with Medicare, then you should know that you should file the claim with Medicare and not with the secondary insurance firm. Please, correct your mistake by filing the claim with Medicare. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. WOODROW WILCOX A senior citizen client from Crown Point, Indiana brought a bill to me and asked me for help. The bill was from a hospital in Illinois. The bill told the client that he owed $1,279.05. I reviewed all the papers that the client brought. Not only did he have the bill, but other papers including a badly typed medical claims form. I found two major mistakes in the billing information from the hospital. Following here is an excerpt from my letter (and fax) to the hospital. The excerpt is edited to protect the privacy of our client. Dear Representative, Our client brought to our office a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $1,279.05 on Guarantor Number XXXXXX for services rendered by your firm. I reviewed the bill and claims information and realized that your firm filed
