Thornton Township Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

The Holy Cross IHM Marimba Ensemble also performed at Thornton Township’s Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration.
_______________________________ By Cindy Cruz At the age of 92 Dr. Richard Rucoba shows no signs of slowing down. Instead he continues to inspire not only those around him but also everyone he meets. During a videotaped interview conducted by Oscar Canales, Thornton Township Human Relations Commission member and co-chair of the township’s HRC Hispanic Heritage Month celebration and Ernst Lamothe, township public and community relations manager; keynote speaker Dr. Rucoba discussed how he continues to live a full and enriching life. The Lansing resident was the recipient of the first annual Premio Cuauhtemoc Award presented by Thornton Township in 2014 for his selfless contribution to the Latino community Dr. Rucoba joined the service in 1943 at the age of 17 after graduating from high school. The World War II veteran served in the Marines as a medic in the South Pacific. He later graduated from Illinois College of Optometry. Always believing in the value of education he tutored high school students in English and math. He has been an active member of the Lions Club for more than 50 years and has received numerous recognitions from the Illinois and Indiana Lions Clubs. Following his retirement in 1996 he began participating in the Lions Club Eye Class Missions to Mexico to examine the poor and prescribe glasses free of charge. To date he has made 15 missions to Mexico. His involvement with the Lions Club stemmed from his desire to help people with visual and hearing impairments. As a Lansing trustee in the late 1970s he helped institute a program requiring
all new police and firefighters to become certified paramedics helping to save the village money and strengthen both departments. Dr. Rucoba believes in the importance of staying physically fit, maintaining a healthy diet and pursuing your passion in life. That’s what he says has kept him healthy and happy. He exercises daily. At the age of 90 Dr. Rucoba celebrated his birthday by skydiving calling the experience “fantastic” and saying he would do it again. “I am living proof that exercise will make you live a longer and healthier life,” said. Dr. Rucoba. “There’s a saying if you sit you rust.” Dr. Rucoba shows no sign of rust. He continues to participate in the Illinois and Indiana Senior Olympics, something he has done for two decades participating in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 400 meter runs, shot put, discus throw, golf, and racquetball events winning numerous awards. He also participated in the National Senior Olympics this year winning three gold medals and one silver. His message for young people is to get a good education so you can accomplish your goals and lead a fulfilling life. “My parents instilled in me the importance of education,” he said and that is what he said helped him to succeed. The annual Hispanic Heritage Month celebration brings together residents of all ages and backgrounds who come to learn about and celebrate the rich Hispanic culture and history and enjoy music, dance and authentic food. Entertainment included performances by the Thornton Township Mexican Folklore Dance Group led by
Guadalupe Macias, Holy Cross IHM Marimba Ensemble and magician Ken Mate. Following the program those in attendance enjoyed authentic Mexican food provided by Pollo Loucas in Blue Island and La Rosa de Guadalupe Bakery in Lansing. “We had the pleasure this year of having an incredible man, Richard Rucoba speak to our community about the ability to achieve anything you want no matter what age you are. He is a remarkable man,” said Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli. Anita Castaneda of South Holland said attending the program and seeing the young people embrace Hispanic culture through music and dance was a wonderful way to celebrate her heritage. “It brings back wonderful memories,” she said. Castaneda serves as a volunteer for township programs held at the senior center in Calumet City. She is grateful for all the programs the township provides. Retired School District 151 teacher Gail Kaufman remembers teaching many of the young dancers. She also taught ESL (English as a Second Language) to many of the parents and grandparents of the dancers. “It is important for the community to learn about other cultures and for the Hispanic community to share their heritage because it promotes understanding of one another and helps people work together for the betterment of their community,” she said. “We have to celebrate the many cultures we have in this country. We have to appreciate the variety of cultures that make our community great. Thornton Township strives to give our residents a variety of fun and educational programs throughout the year,” said Zuccarelli.

Local Man Headed to Special Olympics
Joey Glowacki (left) is pictured with Chris Winston, Chief Marketing Officer for Special Olympics Illinois –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
A client of LARC, an agency in Lansing that serves adults with developmental disabilities, received some special recognition at LARC’s Annual Fish Fry on September 29. Joey Glowacki is headed to the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle next July to participate in the
bowling portion. Glowacki has been bowling at LanOak Lanes for the past seven years with the Thornton Township Bowling Busters. Beverly Tomczak, Special Services/ Assessor Clerk for Thornton Township, and Mona Orellena, coach the group of about 65 special needs bowlers ranging in age from 21 to 74. The group bowls weekly throughout the year. “Joey is a very good sport. He’s always ready to help out the next guy and always roots for the other members. It’s not all about skill, but very much about sportsmanship,” said Tomczak. Being selected to advance to the USA games is quite unusual and only a small number of athletes in the state have this opportunity. “This is the first time that we’re aware of that an athlete in one of our programs has done this,” said Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli, who surprised Glowacki with the announcement and presented him with a certificate. Glowacki will travel with Special Olympics Illinois, who provides flights, meals, lodging and uniforms at no
charge. Glowacki will join athletes competing in the sports of basketball, unified bocce, artistic gymnastics, powerlifting, swimming and unified tennis. “Of over 23,000 athletes in the state of Illinois, just 46 of them are going to the USA Games,” said Chris Winston, Chief Marketing Officer for Special Olympics Illinois. “It’s a great honor for any athlete because their journey to get there has been paved with gold medals.” Joey Glowacki’s mother, Barb Glowacki, noted that he made it to the state level last year. “He really loves to bowl,” she said. “He’s ‘Mr. Sociable’ and makes friends every where he goes.” Besides bowling, he enjoys video games, computers, cooking and working in LARC’s workshop where he reports for his job each weekday to do box assembly. Winston said that the 2018 USA games will happen just a couple weeks before Special Olympics celebrates its 50th anniversary. That celebration will happen in Chicago where the Special Olympics began.

From The Publisher
Cold Shoulder For Dr. Seuss ARLO KALLEMEYN Theodor Seuss Geisel was an American author, political cartoonist, poet, animator, book publisher, and artist, best known for authoring children’s books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. His stories charmed readers of every age with stories of green eggs and ham, Horton, an elephant with very good hearing, and of course a tall frisky cat who wears a striped hat and a red bow tie. It’s hard to imagine any librarian that would turn down a gift of Dr. Suess books especially when it was sent by the First Lady of the United States. A Massachusetts librarian recently refused a gift of 10 Dr. Seuss books donated by Melania Trump, the first lady of this country. Liz Phipps Soeiro, the librarian at Cambridgeport Elementary in Cambridge, Mass., chastised the first lady for wasting the books on a rich school in a rich district that had an extremely educated librarian, when she could have sent books to “underfunded and underprivileged communities” that were “marginalized and maligned” by polices from her husband’s administration. The librarian added “my school doesn’t have a need for these books” then called Dr. Seuss “a bit of a cliché,” and “a tired and worn ambassador for children’s literature,” whose illustrations were “steeped in racist propaganda.” Dr. Seuss is the ninth-best-selling fiction author of all time (estimated 500 million copies of work sold). It seems that the children in Cambridge Massachusetts won’t be reading these popular books anytime soon, thanks to their librarian who thinks she knows better. In honor of Dr. Seuss, here are a few of my favorite quotes from his special stories: “Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!” “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.” “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher—and big fan of Dr. Seuss.

I recently had a conversation with an old acquaintance who is trying to sell her home in another state. I was shocked when she told me that her agent had cancelled the listing agreement via email and he wouldn’t take her calls. When I delved a little further I was no longer shocked; I found myself mentally applauding the other agent. My friend said, “I am under so much stress and that little #%(^)! didn’t seem to understand that having the house shown was just too much for me. I told him &#(!)# and @#*%)) and he hung the phone up on me! Then he sent me an email canceling the listing! Can you believe it? What kind of a #*&^(!)) would cancel a listing over a conversation? It wasn’t personal. He should have understood how stressed I am and dealt with it. Dealing with me is part of his job.” Buying or selling a home is one of the most stressful life events we deal with. Emotions run high and it’s not always easy to keep our cool. I have been in this business for 36 years, as a result I tend to be a little more understanding and knowledgeable when working with buyers or sellers that are having a tough time. Every once in a while a client

decides that taking their frustration out on me is acceptable. I’m not talking about getting frustrated or upset over something within my control (hey, if you feel I’m not doing my job you have every right to respectfully say something)---I’m talking about when a buyer or seller is so stressed about moving, so overwhelmed with all there is to do they just take it all out on me or my staff. There isn’t much I won’t put up with. Being a Realtor means empathizing with my clients and respecting their feelings. But I don’t tolerate abuse, nor should any real estate professional. Plain and simple - - I will do everything in my power to help you deal with the stress that buying or selling a home brings in today’s market but…“I am your Realtor, not your punching bag”. Here’s Your Retirement Countdown
Trucks
BOB KRYGSHELD If you want to enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle, you don’t need to have been born rich or even to have earned scads of money during your working years. But you do need to make the right moves at the right time —which means you might want to start a “retirement countdown” well before you draw your final paycheck. What might such a countdown look like? Here are a few ideas: Ten years before retirement: At this stage of your career, you might be at, or at least near, your peak earning capacity. At the same time, your kids may have grown and left the home, and you might even have paid off your mortgage. All these factors, taken together, may mean that you can afford to “max out” on your IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. And that’s exactly what you should do, if you can, because these retirement accounts offer tax benefits and the opportunity to spread your dollars around a variety of investments. Five years before retirement: Review your Social Security statement to see how much you can expect to receive each month at various ages. You can typically start collecting benefits as early as 62, but your monthly checks will be significantly larger if you wait until your “full” retirement age, which will likely be 66 (and a few months) or 67. Your payments will be bigger still if you can afford to wait until 70, at which point your benefits reach their ceiling. In any case, you’ll need to weigh several factors—your health, your family history of longevity, your other sources of retirement income—before deciding on when to start taking Social Security. One to three years

before retirement: To help increase your income stream during retirement, you may want to convert some—but likely not all— of your growth-oriented investments, such as stocks and stock-based vehicles, into incomeproducing ones, such as bonds. Keep in mind, though, that even during your retirement years, you’ll still likely need your portfolio to provide you with some growth potential to help keep you ahead of inflation. One year before retirement: Evaluate your retirement income and expenses. It’s particularly important that you assess your health-care costs. Depending on your age at retirement, you may be eligible for Medicare, but you will likely need to pay for some supplemental coverage as well, so you will need to budget for this. Also, as you get closer to your actual retirement date, you will need to determine an appropriate withdrawal rate for your investments. How much should you take each year from your IRA, 401(k) and other retirement accounts? The answer depends on many factors: the size of these accounts, your retirement lifestyle, your projected longevity, whether you’ve started taking Social Security, whether your spouse is still working, and so on. A financial professional can help you determine an appropriate withdrawal rate. These aren’t the only steps you need to take before retirement, nor do they need to be taken in the precise order described above. But they can be useful as guidelines for a retirement countdown that can help ease your transition to the next phase of your life. WOODROW WILCOX On September 18, 2017, I received a copy of a bill for a client from Gary. The bill was from her doctor. She wanted to know if she should pay it. My answer was “NO!” I researched the bill and found it was false. The doctor had already been paid long ago. But, the bill was for services on a date that was over two years ago. Many senior citizens can’t remember details about visiting a doctor’s office over two years ago. If they get a bill and don’t have anyone to help them check it, they pay the false bill. Was this bill a mistake or a scam? I don’t know. I just wanted to protect our client from Gary. After I had the facts from my research, I wrote a letter to the doctor which explained what evidence I had to prove that the bill was false. I knew the original amount billed, the Medicare ruling, the check amount and check number from the insurance company, and the date that the check was cashed. I demanded a letter of apology to our client and a new bill showing that

the true balance of her bill was zero. If that does not happen, I am ready to help our client file a complaint against the doctor’s office with the Indiana Attorney General’s office of consumer protection. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud to have earned a reputation of “going the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agency does not give this high level of service to its senior citizen clients, why not switch to an insurance agency that will do this kind of work to protect senior citizens? By Patricia Muhammad Universal Dental Clinics has opened its dental office in South Holland and is taking a proactive approach towards community efforts by joining School Districts 147,148 and 205 to offer in-school dental treatments to local students. “Public health is the responsibility of the governing body of the community and the healthcare professionals who are serving it. Oral diseases start at an early age as soon as teeth start erupting. Preventing those diseases is achievable by educating children and their parents about oral health and diseases and providing preventive treatments with periodic monitoring,” said Dr. Ahmed Ramaha, owner and founder of Universal Dental Clinics. Several years ago, the clinic sought help through the state to be able to service the three school districts in Thornton Township. “We went to [the state] seeking help. Several years ago the state issued us grants because it needed more help to pick up the slack to cover kids in the various school districts here in Thornton Township,” said Qiana Savage, Oral Health Director for Universal Dental Clinics. Savage added that the in-school dental initiative provides area students with dental examinations, fluoride treatments, cleanings, and fillings. “This service is provided twice a year to monitor the health of those children. Since the children started this program, they reported a 22% drop in dental cavities among children and are aiming for a 100% cavity-free campus. So far, 42% of children who benefited from this program did not have insurance, and our services are 100% free of charge for schools and children,” Ramaha said. During in-school visits, unused classrooms and gyms are set up for dental services. “At each school visit, we see about 100 students. We have enough staff to bring service to as many students as possible. We also try to minimize students having their classes disrupted. Our services make it more convenient for parents to get their kids’ dental work done,” Savage said.

Ramaha’s newest office is in the heart of South Holland, located at 304 E. 162nd Street, next door to Panera Bread. Savage stated that the clinic accepts state insurance including Medicare and Medicaid. “I’m ecstatic about what he has to offer,” Savage said. “He’s always coming up with different things to give back to the kids.” Universal Dental Clinics offers free dental services and transportation free of charge to those children who can’t afford treatment. This year, the clinic donated Virtual Reality gear to each school in District 205 to be used as an advanced educational tool. as well as making a pledge of $2,000 in annual contributions to the International Baccalaureate (IB) educational program. They also offer training in dental assistance for district high school graduates for free. According to Ramaha, in 2015 the clinic began a public initiative honoring firefighters and police officers in Elgin, IL for serving the community during Christmas and holidays away from their families. The Chicago Tribune and Elgin Courier reported the story on December 24, 2015. In 2014, the clinic sponsored a trip to Brookfield Zoo for School District 148. The clinic provided tickets and buses for all students and their parents as well. Below is a listing of service dates for the districts. All dental services are school boardapproved. School District 148: Early Childhood Center in Riverdale, October 2; Franklin Elementary School, October 12-13; Washington School (K-8), October 18-20; Riverdale Elementary, Nov 1-2; Lincoln School (K-8) October 2526; Roosevelt Elementary, Nov 9-10; Park Elementary, November 27-28; School District 147: King Elementary School, November 6-8; Lincoln Elementary, November 15-17; Rosa Park Junior High School, November 20-21 and November 2930. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I’m planning on selling my current home within the next six to nine months. The home is in very good condition except the furnace and roof need to be replaced. I have the money for repairs available without refinancing, should I do it before listing the home or have the new owners take care of it? Answer: Why do the roof and furnace need to be replaced? Does the roof leak? Is there any health or safety problem with the furnace? If yes, these are safety issues and you need to resolve these issues through repairs or replacement. If No, and your furnace and roof are fine except for age, then maybe it is best to do nothing and see how the buyers react. Your buyer will most likely hire a home inspector. The home inspector may indicate on the report the items needing repair. If your buyers ask for these repairs to be completed, it would be in your best interest to repair them. The roof and or furnace will not improve with time, so this will come up again with the next buyer. The inspector may also suggest a roof

and or furnace certification. A certification helps prove to potential homebuyers that the roof has a few years of life remaining and the furnace is safe to use. If they cannot be certified, the buyer may ask for them to be replaced. In response, the seller may replace them, give a credit toward replacement, or just say No. If an agreement between seller and buyer cannot be reached, the deal is considered dead and you have not sold your home. Consider this: What would you want done if you ran into these issues when buying your next home? Remember, negotiations must satisfy both the buyer and the seller if a Home is to transfer ownership! The Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled “25 Years of Computer Art Exploration” by Steve Sherrell. The exhibition will be on display in both the Dorothea Thiel and Photo Four Galleries October 23-November 17. On November 1, Mr. Sherrell will deliver a lecture at 12:15 in room 4431 with an artist reception to follow. After studying at the School of the Art Institute with Ray Yoshida, Sherrell began exhibiting on a regular basis at many of the city’s great galleries: locally, nationally and internationally. In the early 1990’s he began doing digital artwork on an Amiga computer and taught Computer Art for 20 years. His experimental nature has led him to explore ways that handmade techniques could merge with computer generated visuals to create unusual and original hybrids. Sherrell stated, “I studied painting at the School of the Art Institute but became enamored with making computer based artwork. Soon I was showing my digital work alongside my paintings. As an artist, I have always followed the paths that most interested me; the ones that I felt gave back the most fulfilling results. I have little concern for markets, trends, or pressure from peer groups to conform. To me, the notion of discovery has held my interest more than the notion of production.” He add, “Overall, I have produced a great amount of work in my long career and continue to find new things that excite and interest me. The challenge of art is one that has always been a great motivator for me. To wake up every morning and face something interesting and exciting has been the joy of my life.” The public is welcome to visit art exhibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dorothea Thiel and Photo Four Galleries are located on the college’s fourth floor and are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. They are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. For more information contact (708) 596-2000 ext. 2316. The Bishop Noll band, who last year performed at the Liberty Bowl and enjoyed an award streak, kicked off the summer by receiving the Patriotic Award Trophy for its performance in the Highland Fourth of July parade. South Holland Public Library to Get New Elevator The South Holland Public Library has received a Live & Learn Construction Grant in the amount of $125,000 to replace the existing elevator with one compliant with the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) minimum size requirements. The grant is awarded by Secretary of State/State Librarian Jesse White for important infrastructure improvements in Illinois libraries. The total cost of the project is $390,000. The Library, built in 1971-72, has a small elevator that can only accommodate a small wheelchair or stroller. This elevator project will remove the existing elevator, enlarge the shaft, and install a larger elevator that meets ADA standards. Library patrons with larger, motorized wheelchairs and strollers will have easier access to the lower level Youth Services Department, Teen Area and North Meeting Room. We expect construction to begin October 2nd and finish in February 2018. Once the current elevator is removed, patrons will only be able to access the lower level using the east and west staircases. Our staff is working to move some programming to the East Meeting Room on the main level and will retrieve materials for patrons from the lower level upon request. If you have questions or comments, please contact Library Director Robin Wagner at 708-527-3104 or robin@ southhollandlibrary.org.

Community members, Glenwood Academy staff, families and friends gathered at Glenwood Academy’s campus on the morning of Saturday, September 16, 2017 to celebrate its 3rd Annual Steps for Students 5K. The walk was one of many yearlong events commemorating the non-profit’s 130th anniversary. More than 150 walkers collectively raised nearly $30,000 to support the life-changing services Glenwood provides to children and their families from the Chicagoland area and Northwest Indiana. Participants enjoyed walking the paved Thorn Creek Trail and exploring Glenwood’s historic campus with friends and families while supporting the residential education community. After the heart pumping workout, guests returned to campus for an afternoon festival featuring delicious food, cold beverages, and fun family entertainment. Food vendors included Glenwood’s Porkchop, Homewood’s Coldstone Creamery, and The Slide Ride, named as one of the 10 Best Food Trucks in Chicago by The Chicagoist. Glenwood Academy thanks the Village of Glenwood, Homewood-Flossmoor area and surrounding communities for its continued support. 2017 Steps for Students 5K sponsors: Stricklin & Associates, Carl Buddig & Company, MB Financial, The Hollie Family, Home Depot, Friends of Glenwood Academy, Drop Zone, Walgreens, Julie Badel and Epstein Becker & Green, P.C., Starbucks, and The Great American Bagel. Warts are a bump in the skin characterized by pain with squeezing of the wart. They are caused by a virus which invades the individual cells of the skin. There have been many treatments available through the years ranging from voodoo to laser surgery, including use of acids and burning out the wart. Therefore, the treatment should be done with the patients lifestyle in mind. If you have any questions concerning warts or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Question: How can I find out if my legal problem is serious enough to warrant the services of a lawyer? Answer: It’s easy. The Illinois Lawyer Finder Service (www. illinoislawyerfinder.com), operated by the Illinois State Bar Association, offers consumers a referral to a qualifying lawyer. You can search the online directory free of charge by entering the field of practice, county and zip code. An option is to call the hotline at (888) 662-3851 to receive the name of a lawyer, who will provide an initial 30-minute consultation for no more than $25. You are under no obligation to hire that lawyer. For more information about Illinois law, visit www. illinoislawyerfinder.com.
