Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

Dollar Tree Customers Set to Bring Holiday Joy to Military Kids Operation Homefront and Dollar Tree Inc. will once again join forces this year to make the holidays brighter for our military families with the nonprofit’s Holiday Toy Drive. For the 11th consecutive year, Dollar Tree customers can purchase toys for military kids, easing the financial burdens that often accompany the holiday season for junior- and mid-grade (E1E6) service members and their families. Dollar Tree stores will have collection boxes available for shoppers to place newly purchased toys to be delivered to the children of our men and women in uniform. Operation Homefront volunteers collect these toys to be distributed at the nonprofit’s holiday events across the country and through on-base Family Readiness Groups. Making the season bright for military families is what this partnership is all about, and Dollar Tree and its generous customers have made that joy possible since 2006. “On behalf of the entire Operation Homefront family, I want

to thank Dollar Tree and its customers for continuing their generous support for our Holiday Toy Drive program,” said Brig. Gen. (ret.) John I. Pray Jr., president & CEO of Operation Homefront. “Over the course of the past 11 years, we have made a real difference, with millions of goods going to support our military families. Our work together over this holiday season continues to demonstrate our collective appreciation for their exceptional service and the importance of our efforts to help this very special group of our fellow Americans thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.” OperationHomefront.org also accepts online contributions for all of Operation Homefront’s programs to build strong, stable, and secure military families. Stampeding Bull Market May Slow Down …So Be Prepared BOB KRYGSHELD We’ve been enjoying a long period of steadily rising stock prices. Of course, this bull market won’t last forever – and when it does start losing steam, you, as an investor, need to be prepared. Before we look at how you can ready yourself for a new phase in the investment environment, let’s consider some facts about the current situation: • Length. This bull market, which began in 2009, is the second-oldest in the past 100 years – and it’s about twice as long as the average bull market. • Strength. Since the start of this long rally, the stock market has produced an average annualized gain of 15.5% per year. While these figures are impressive, they aren’t necessarily predictive – so how much longer can this bull market continue to “stampede”? Well, there’s no mandatory expiration date for bull markets – in fact, they don’t generally die of old age, but typically expire either because of a recession or the bursting of a bubble. And right now, most market experts don’t see either event on the near-term horizon. Still, this doesn’t mean you should necessarily expect an uninterrupted streak of big gains. Some signs point to greater market volatility and lower returns. To navigate this changing landscape, think about these suggestions: • Consider rebalancing your portfolio. If appropriate, rebalance your investment mix to ensure you have a reasonable percentage of stocks – to help provide the growth you need to achieve your goals – and enough fixed-income, such as bonds, to help reduce your portfolio’s vulnerability to market volatility and potential short-term downturns.
• Look beyond U.S. borders. At any given time, U.S. stocks may be doing well, while international stocks are slumping – and vice versa. So, when volatility hits the U.S. markets – as it surely will, at some time – you can help reduce the impact on your portfolio if you also own some international equities. Keep in mind, though, that international investments bring some specific risks, such as currency fluctuations and foreign political and economic events. • Develop a strategy. You may want to work with a financial professional to identify a strategy to cope with a more turbulent investment atmosphere. This can keep you from overreacting to market downturns and possibly even help you capitalize on short-term pullbacks. You could invest systematically by putting the same amount of money in the same investments each month. When prices go up, your investment dollars will buy fewer shares, and when prices drop, you’ll buy more shares. And the more shares you own, the greater your potential for accumulation. However, this strategy, sometimes known as dollar cost averaging, won’t guarantee a profit or protect against all losses, and you need to be willing to keep investing when share prices are declining. Investing successfully becomes more challenging when the inevitable volatility and market downturns appear. Making these moves can help you keep moving toward your goals – even when the “bull” has taken a breather. MIKE BUDER When your home is for sale, it becomes more than your home. It’s a commodity that has to compete with other homes in the complex real estate marketplace. How can you make your home it’s most competitive? Well, you do the obvious to make buyers want it—have it looking great, no bad kitty litter boxes, and a reasonable price tag. But you also have to make it competitive from the vantage point of the buyers’ agents, or the buyers who would love the place may never see it. You want to make your home the one every agent with a buyer in your price range wants to show. You want agents not only to show it, but to want your house to be the one their clients choose. How do you do this? 1. Make your home easy to show. If you only let people in on Wednesday at noon when the moon is full, that doesn’t work for agents, even if they have buyers for your home. 2. Take Fang the leghumping Great Dane away from the property during showings. 3. Don’t stick around during showings to make sure the buyer’s agent doesn’t miss something. 4. Have your agent show you the marketing photos that will go into the MLS. The buyer agents will often select the homes they show based on these, so make sure the photos look great

and that the description is a combination of enticing and accurate. 5. List with an agent that plays well with others—avoid agents who have nothing nice to say about their colleagues. Chances are the feelings are mutual. You don’t want other agents avoiding your house because your agent is a pill. 6. The commission rate or brokerage fee is very important in today’s market. If your agent is charging you a greatly reduced fee, this will most likely affect the coop fee, which is the portion of the commission offered to buyer agents in the MLS. The coop fee should be fair enough to motivate agents to want to sell your home. If you want to sell your home for top dollar in a reasonable amount of time, it’s important to maximize its exposure to the marketplace. This means appealing to buyers —and the agents who are advising them—on which homes to look at. Speaking Of Seniors
Triple Billing Caught WOODROW WILCOX On October 12, 2017, I worked with a client from Valparaiso to investigate why he was getting a bill for over $1,200. A few days before this, the client brought some papers to our insurance agency office in Valparaiso. That insurance office brought the medical bill papers to me to review. I asked the client to come to my office so that we could phone Medicare together. In that call, he gave Medicare permission to regard me as his representative for investigating the bill. In the phone call, we learned that Medicare records showed that the billing service used by the medical service provider had billed Medicare for the same claim THREE TIMES. The bill was paid by Medicare and our client’s insurance company the first time. But, the billing service billed Medicare two more times and now claimed that our client owed $1,216.30. Over the years, I have made many contacts. I happened to know the director of the billing firm that did this. I knew from past experiences with him that he would not like learning that his employees
were making such errors. He always has been fair with our clients in the past. If a mistake is made by his firm, he has always cooperated to fix the problem and correct the bill promptly. I can’t say that about every billing service leader. So, I wrote to him and explained the details that were in Medicare’s records. I am confident that my work will result in our client’s bill being corrected from $1,216.30 to $0. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency is proud of its reputation for “going the extra mile” with our senior citizen clients when a medical bill problem arises. If the insurance agency that you use does not give this high level of service to senior citizens, maybe it is time to change to an insurance agency that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that agency over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$

RICHARD ZEKVELD Who do you work for? For yourself? Your family? Your boss? Your company? Your clients? Your community? Your fellow church members? Maybe its “All of the above.” You work to pay the bills, provide for your family and finance your pleasures. You work because you (usually) find satisfaction and fulfillment in what you do. Because you enjoy the “Well done” of others. Because you’re hoping for a promotion and a pay raise. Because you’ll lose your job if you don’t. Because you need something to keep you busy. Because you care about people and want to make your church, your community and your world a better place. These motives are fine, as far as they go. But are they enough? Are they enough to encourage and sustain you when your body aches? When no one notices or appreciates ‘everything I do around here?’ When your efforts don’t seem to matter or make a
difference? When your workplace is toxic? When work just isn’t fun anymore? When your boss is unreasonable, your workers untrustworthy and your clients… well, the customer is always right, but, seriously?!”? Child of God, look up! Who do you work for? For real? “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving” (Colossians 3:23-24). His “Well done!” is worth more than the highest praise humans can offer. In Christ, all your work today is training for an eternal tomorrow of satisfying service. “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58b). Whether the wrath of the storm-tossed sea Or demons, or men, or whatever it be No water can swallow the ship where lies The Master of ocean and earth and sky They all shall sweetly obey thy will Peace, peace, be still This song embodies the emotional trauma we all feel when going through uncertain times. Every news report about an unarmed person killed by police for a minor traffic violation, or mistaken identity, or caught in gang crossfire—we hold our breath in fear, while praying “Lord Jesus, not my child, not my loved one—Lord, please, Lord, have mercy.” Even if the person is no one we know, it creates fear and anxiety that it could happen to us or to our loved one, or the loved one of someone we know. How can we have and maintain “inner” peace in times like these? A simple declaration of faith in the Lord. Peace. ...Be still, my soul, and know that God is....
Over the weekend I heard an old song made popular by Rev. James Cleveland that brought peace to my spirit amid all the civil unrest our country is currently experiencing. The song, “Peace, Be Still” is taken from the passage of scripture (Mark 4:36-40) that tells of Jesus’ calming of the angry sea. The chorus presents the thought that a storm-tossed sea could come in the form of demons, men or whatever! Regardless of the thing that threatens our peace, it becomes powerless when confronted with faith in God. Master, the tempest is raging The billows are tossing high The sky is overshadowed with blackness No shelter or help is nigh Carest thou not that we perish? How canst thou lie asleep When each moment so madly is threatening A grave in the angry deep? The winds and the waves shall obey thy will Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still Peace, be still

Dogs and Men: A Comparison ARLO KALLEMEYN We all like to compare certain things. Here, we compare having a dog in your life as opposed to a man. Some people are doubly blessed—and have both. 1. Dogs do not have problems expressing affection in public. 2. Dogs miss you when you’re gone. 3. Dogs feel guilty when they’ve done something wrong. 4. Dogs admit when they’re jealous. 5. Dogs are very direct about wanting to go out. 6. Dogs do not play games with you—except fetch (and they never laugh at how you throw. Hey ladies, we men just laugh lovingly at how adorable you look when you throw . . . as long as it’s not a shoe.) 7. You can train a dog. 8. Dogs are easy to buy for. 9. The worst social disease you can get from dogs is fleas. (OK, the really worst disease you can get from them is rabies, but there’s a vaccine for it and you can kill the one that gives it to you). 10. Dogs understand what “no” means. 11. Dogs mean it when they kiss you. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of man’s best friend even if they are somewhat better than men at some things.

Real Estate Specialists
Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We just recently closed on a home and upon moving in, we discovered a horrible cat urine smell in the master bedroom closet. While trying to resolve the problem, we noticed some stains on the carpet. I am curious to know if the previous owner and their broker are obligated to disclose pet damage to the area. They were the only owners of the home and up to this point have denied the existence of a cat. Based on the smell and the stains, it appears otherwise. Do we have any recourse? Answer: When you buy real estate owners have an obligation to disclose material defects—and buyers have an obligation to protect their interests. Did you make the sale contingent on a home inspection satisfactory to you? Was the closet somehow off limits? Were the stains purposely hidden? If the odor is now so pronounced, why did you not notice it during the pre-closing walk through or when you originally looked at the home? The owners, if they had a cat, could say
with some justice that the property reflects normal wear and tear and that you were not promised real estate perfection. Question: I have just put up a new privacy fence—and paid for the whole thing. And now a friend tells me that my neighbors may have been responsible for some of the cost. Is this true? Answer: You put up the fence on your property. You selected the height and style. Your neighbors, if they like fences, are the beneficiary of your kind gesture. Someone we know told us before putting up a fence on their property they went to the neighbors and asked them to chip-in. And they did. E-mail us your Real estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com.
