_______________________________ By Patricia Muhammad On November 3, Thornton Alumni Legacy Fund (TALF) celebrated its 2017 Alumni Day, held in the Thornton Township High School auditorium. Later during the evening, the organization hosted the Seventh Annual Hall of Fame Honorees Program, honoring ten inductees, at Idlewild Country Club in Flossmoor. More than 275 people attended the gala. Lamar Thomas, a founding member of TALF, says the program grew out of a need to help students have a stronger academic experience. He said, “We started the organization because we saw various cutbacks that were made to student’s programs at Thornton and we wanted to provide current students with a comparable, enriched academic experience that so many of us were fortunate enough to have.” TAFT’s Alumni Day program began with an afternoon panel discussion moderated by Derrick Young of CBS news. Panelists included Deborah Brown Farmer (Class of 1995), President and CEO of the Brown-Farmer Group; State Senator Napolean Harris (Class of 1997); and LaRoyce Hawkins (Class of 2006). According to retired Thornton teacher and TALF Chairman, Dorothy Bryant, discussions were focused on how panelists became successful and how they handled their successes—and their not-so-successful moments. Alumni later toured the Lou Boudreau Athletic Trophy Room and Navistar Diesel Engine Program, located in the

Tech Building at Thornton Township High School. During dinner, Ray Jacubiak served as the Master of Ceremonies. Thornton Township High School Principal Tony Ratliff welcomed guests, and Dr. Leotis Swopes, Superintendent of District 205, was the keynote speaker. Swopes updated the audience on the State of the Illinois Funding Bill as it relates to education. He announced the success of the work of Divisional Leaders who helped design District 205’s classroom curriculum. He also acknowledged the success of the academic performing arts and athletics programs, and the overall success of the District 205 International Baccalaureate program. Honoree Carl Barnhill, Chief Revenue Officer for Coors Brewing Co. and motivational speaker, graduated from Thornton High in 1966. Barnhill served in the Vietnam War, and shared a poignant story of a former marine corporal and Thornton Alum, Walter Ward, who lost his life on the frontline during the War. Barnhill says of Ward, “The real heroes are like our friend Walter Ward, who gave his life fighting for our country.” As a motivational speaker, Barnhill impressed upon the audience the importance of establishing core values and setting realistic goals. “Without core values, no young person could ever set realistic goals,” he said, Former Thornton student LaRoyce Hawkins, now a musician, stand-up comic, and actor on NBC’s police drama

ore in

Chicago P.D. series, recalled having to do basketball pep talks for his team. Hawkins spoke on the importance of giving back to his alma mater. He said, “I think it is extremely important to give back and let the legacy live on. Thornwood’s Marching Thunderbirds play from the stands at the “battle of the bands” competition in Olympia Fields.

The handsomely uniformed band is accompanied by the gold-clad Blue Diamonds and the Thunderettes flag team in blue.

_______________________________

On October 21, 2017, Thornwood’s Marching Thunderbirds took numerous awards in Rich Central High School’s 12th Annual Olympian Marching Band & Drumline Festival in Olympia Fields, IL. This “battle of the bands” competition is the largest in Chicago’s south suburbs, and showcases both Southern Show Style and Corps style marching techniques. Junior and senior high schools from all over the Chicagoland area converged

on the campus of Rich Central to compete, including Thornton Fractional South of Lansing, Crete-Monee of Crete, Rich South of Richton Park, Thornwood of South Holland, and Thornridge of Dolton. Congratulations are in order to Dwayne Sanders, Thornwood’s Band Director, and the victorious Marching Thunderbirds for a job well done. They received the Overall Grand Champion

Trophy, along with Grand Champion - Show Style, 1st Place in Class AA Best Winds, 1st Place in Class AA Best Percussion, and 1st Place in the Drumline Competition. Sanders, previously of Rich East High School, also led the Marching Thunderbirds to victory in these same categories in last year’s competition. South Holland is justifiably proud of these students. South Holland Baker is Rising Star

3

VERSE OF THE WEEK

…We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. — 2 Corinthians 10:5

Attend the church of your choice.

Baker Marcus Freeman of Signature Sweets Factory has garnered the attention of Channel 7 News, Windy City Live, WGN, Channel 9, Fox 32, and People to People, and has been featured in the Chicago Defender magazine and Altanta’s Sheen magazine.

Weddings, birthday parties, and social events are the canvas on which Freeman creates his art: custom cakes, cupcakes, pastries, and many other beautiful, one-of-a-kind confections. Walk-in customers can enjoy a sweet treat and cup of fine coffee in the shop.

_______________________________ When customers stroll into Signature Sweets Factory at 516 E. 162nd St. in South Holland, they see a cozy, attractive space, with sofas and chairs arranged for sitting and chatting over coffee and treats. The decor of the shop is a clever mix of homey and factory—a sort of gears-and-crystal vibe. Under the glass of the counter are beautifully created desserts-for-one. If you buy four or more, the gracious manager will box up the treats and tie them with a real satin bow. But if visitors to the shop thought what they see is all there is, they would be mistaken. This charming little store is but the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes is a bustling kitchen and staging area that is the engine room of a thriving enterprise that includes special events, catering, and wholesaling. Baker Marcus Freeman is the both the brains and brawn behind Signature Sweets Factory, a company he started at the age of 19 (he’s now 22). Originally he cooked out of his home in South Holland, then as volume increased, he rented space in a shared commercial kitchen in Valparaiso. He rapidly outgrew that space and started looking for a place of his own. “I’ve lived in South Holland my whole life, so [Valpo] was very far away. Then—to find this space, right in South Holland— it couldn’t have been better! Though we’ve been in business for 3 years, we’ve just had this location (516 E. 162nd St.) since last August. We opened the shop to customers in May 2017.” When he says “we” Freeman is referring to his staff, who are also family. His mother is the office manager, and his cousin works the store’s counter and also does his scheduling. His dad pitches in after his day job and even Freeman’s grandmother helps. When he has a big job, he calls in more family and friends. An example of a big job would be the sweets table for 1,000 people at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago for their Night of 100 Stars event. “Baked goods have to be made the morning of the event,” says Freeman. “No day-old sweets.” All of

Sweets Factory will be selling to benefit Make a Wish and sickle cell anemia research.” Signature Sweets Factory is the realization of a lifelong dream for Freeman. “I’ve always liked to cook. I initially started out on the chef side— on the food side—I wasn’t good at baking at all.” Freeman wanted to fill that gap in his expertise. “I decided to bake as much as possible, which led to me baking exclusively.” The baking was a springboard to what is now a thriving business. In fact, Signature Sweets Factory doesn’t just do sweets. Taking advantage of his skills as a chef, Freeman has added a food catering component as well. That, along with wholesaling desserts to companies such as high-end grocery Mariano’s, ensures things never slow down too much. Freeman graduated valedictorian from South Holland’s McKinley School, and he recently came up with a way to encourage other McKinley students to succeed. When students make the honor roll, they will get a reward from Signature Sweets Factory. The school loved the idea, and at a school assembly on November 3rd, honor roll students received a gift certificate to come in for a free dessert. Freeman’s plans for the future are to continue to grow and expand, open another location, and eventually franchise, offering sandwiches, pastries, coffees, and teas in an environment with a warm, upscale feel. At the same time he plans to expand his wholesale business, making his sweets available through high end shops. Have an event coming up and want to wow your guests? Visit Signature Sweets Factory at 516 E. 162nd St. in South Holland, IL, where there’s a good chance you’ll catch baker Marcus Freeman at the counter. If he’s away, talk to manager Marilyn Freeman (AKA Mom). Or you can call 708-394-3580 and talk to the lovely and knowledgeable Candace (Freeman’s cousin). For more information, go to www.signaturesweetsfactory.com, or email info@signaturesweetsfactory.com.

the sweets were prepared in his kitchen, transported to the museum, arranged for display, then Freeman and his team served them. Freeman’s mother chimes in. “That same day, Marcus had to do a sweets table for Lifetime TV—so he had to set that up and be onset, and then as soon as that was done, he met [his crew] at the museum. So Marcus actually served about 1,200 people dessert that day.” How does Freeman feel about doing a job of that size? “I get excited! I go over the colors and theme with the client, and I may visit the venue. I try to make the desserts complementary to the space— the desserts are art, really, so I may tie in with the wallpaper or a chandelier. I make the desserts cohesive with the event. And every sweets table I do is unique. I don’t repeat designs.” And all of his confections are made “from scratch.” Many bakeries advertise that they bake “from scratch” while actually using a cake mix purchased in bulk, something Signature Sweets Factory has never done. “I actually changed my supplier because he kept pushing the bulk cake mix.” In the beginning, Freeman reached out to the news media to make himself known. Now the media comes to him. Again his mother volunteers, “He’s been on Channel 7 News, Windy City Live, WGN, Channel 9, Fox 32, People to People, as well as being featured in the Defender magazine and Sheen magazine in Atlanta—they were in Chicago and heard about Signature Sweets Factory, so they came out to South Holland to interview Marcus at the shop. He’s also done a lot of celebrity events.” Of course, a big driver of new customers continues to be word-ofmouth from clients who gush about Freeman to family, friends and business associates. All of that attention led to a call from Make a Wish Foundation. “They contacted us because a little boy wanted to learn to cook.” The child came to the shop and got to bake with Freeman. “He designed an orange creme cupcake he called the Dreamsicle, which Signature

Boiler Bot Battle Competition Draws Robotics Teams to Purdue

Teams busily prepare their bots for the competition. Twenty-three teams from four states were registered to participate on November 10 and 11. __________________________________________________________________________________________________

Purdue FIRST Programs hosted the FRC Robotics competition Boiler Bot Battle Friday and Saturday November 10 and 11. Teams from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Ohio participated. The event at Purdue University in The Purdue Armory gave teams an opportunity to practice and prepare for the upcoming 2018 competition season. “The Super Bowl of Smarts” is one term often used to describe these FIRST robotics competitions. While the official 2018 season does not start until January 6, 2018, events like this allow teams to practice in a full sized venue and gain priceless experience they otherwise could not get. Purdue FIRST Programs 2017 President Kija Davis said, “Boiler Bot Battle is not only another chance to play Steamworks, but it’s also a chance to learn about Purdue and opportunities we offer here. We show students who share our passion for STEM why we love being Boilermakers.”

is about 8’ off the floor. Additionally robots score points by placing a game piece, shaped like a gear, that is about 12 inches in diameter onto a flexible peg. Human players (students) must then retrieve the gear from the flexible peg and place it onto another assembly before points are scored. An endgame option allows robots to score even more points by climbing a rope. The matches are timed and anything can happen. Often the final score will be decided by just one single event. Just like in a basketball game the difference between winner and looser is often just a fraction of a second. In fact, the atmosphere of a robotics competition is markedly similar to a basketball game; fans decked out in spirited clothing, constant cheering, and the moments of euphoria when a team scores just before the buzzer rings. It is a truly incredible experience for all involved. The Purdue FIRST Programs are tackling the trend of declining enrollment in science,

Brittany Ammerman Purdue FIRST Programs Director of Regional Development said, “Some teams brought two robots. Teams develop a higher level of competitiveness by honing their driving and competition skills by running two robots. Other teams will build a robot during the off season for practice. Events like this give them the opportunity to test that bot in the stress of competition.” The importance of Purdue hosting an advanced STEM event like this FIRST Robotics Competition cannot be stressed enough. Purdue wants students that have the experience that this program provides. Students that have participated in this program consistently excel in the STEM environment. While not really a battle, the competition is extremely fierce. “STEAMWORKS” at Boiler Bot Battle is the FIRST FRC 2017 game. The game consists of the robot shooting 5 inch whiffle balls into a 21 inch diameter goal that

mathematics and engineering programs by using a competition sports style model that makes STEM learning fun and inspiring for students. Some have questioned if something “fun” can be an effective tool to change peoples lives. Initial data from a three-year study by FIRST on students in their first year of college indicates that FIRST’s positive impacts continue into post secondary education, with FIRST alumni continuing to show impacts on STEM-related attitudes, as well as impacts on interest in engineering and technologyrelated majors, engineering course-taking, and STEM-related internships and summer jobs. Results to date indicate that FIRST is already making a lasting difference in career interests and educational choices for the young people who participate in the program. So students can learn and have fun at the same time! See the full study results at https://www. firstinspires.org/about/impact.

Upcoming Court Reporting Open House At SSC’s Oak Forest Center

PRESTON R. WINFREY And Who sends the rain When the earth is dry? Somebody bigger than you and I.

In the marketplace there is always an argument about who’s the biggest, and who’s in charge. There are turf fights everywhere from the local neighborhood to the highest office in government, each claiming to be “the voice” that cannot be disputed, disregarded nor ignored. Little do people realize, there is and will always be somebody bigger than they are. Every boss has a boss. Every president has a president. Even the legendary Frank Sinatra, when he popularized Paul Anka’s song “I Did it My Way” in 1969, was bound by the script that was written for him. No one is exempt and all are accountable to someone else at some time. Even if you have your own business, you may have the rights and privileges in placing the order of supplies, equipment and products, but if you fail to listen to those who are making the purchases from you and your business, you will find yourself out of business. Who made the mountain, Who made the tree, Who made the river Flow to the sea, And Who hung the moon In the starry sky? Somebody bigger than you and I.

He lights the way When the road is long, Keeps you company. With love to guide you, He walks beside you, Just like He walks wth me. When I am weary, When I am filled with despair, Who gives me courage To go on from there? And Who gives me faith That will never die? Somebody bigger than you and I. A wise man by the name of Solomon once said, “Here is my final conclusion: fear God and obey his commandments, for this is the entire duty of man. For God will judge us for everything we do, including every hidden thing, good or bad.” The summer has ended, the fall is upon us and winter is approaching. Let’s remember that no matter how big we are, or how much we are revered by others, there is Someone bigger than you and I, and that Someone is not you nor me. It’s the LORD. (Psalm 24)

Pictured is the St. Susanna Ascension Catholic Church Women Auxiliary members. Members are part of various clubs within St. Susanna Church that contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of the 100-year-old predominately African-American church. The Women Working Together auxiliary recently sponsored its annual fashion show in Hammond, Illinois. _______________________________________________

By Patricia Muhammad Saint Susanna Ascension Catholic Church, located at 15234 Myrtle Street in Harvey, IL, opened its doors more than a 100 years ago. For the last forty years, a dedicated women’s auxiliary club inside of St. Susanna has been raising funds or the upkeep of the only predominately African-American Catholic church in the south suburbs. The parish hosts an annual fashion show to generate funds, headed up by Transcita Micken, Chairperson of the fashion show and VicePresident of Women Working Together organization. “I have been hosting the show for more than ten years,” says Micken. “But the church was putting on the fashion show way before I joined... over 40 years ago,” she said.

The Women Working Together Fashion Show was held November 11th at the Dynasty Banquet Hall in Hammond, Indiana, drawing more than 150 people. A social hour preceded the show, then guests were seated for dinner as the fashion show was presented. The Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening was Deborah Kimball Crosslin. St. Susanna is pastored by the Rev. Thadeo Mgimba. Originally of Tanzania (East Africa, Mgimba has served as pastor for St. Susanna Ascension for more than five years. Says Mickens, “The fashion show is the largest fundraiser for our church to help supplement the paying of the church’s bills and ongoing upkeep,” said. “The men of the church work hard to

support the women’s events at St. Susanna. In recent years, the church has taken a stand against injustices in its outcry against domestic violence and the controversial gun violence issue. For the last five years on October 5th, the church has joined with the Student Board of Education of School District 205 to host a “March Against Domestic Violence.” Women Working Together is a branch of the Ascension Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) organization. The ACCW falls under the umbrella of the The National Council of Catholic Women, (NCCW), which consists of more than 3,000 affiliated Catholic women’s organizations in parishes and dioceses, representing hundreds of thousands of Catholic women.

Question: Two weeks ago I made an offer on a bank-owned house. The bank was impressed with the offer, however, the listing agent said there was another offer so I upped my offer $8,000. Four days later they told me they accepted the other offer which was $15,000 lower than mine because it was a cash offer. My loan was already approved, so there was no financing contingency and I would have closed within two weeks. The house is still in contingency with the cash offer and I was wondering if I had any recourse about these terms. Should I wait in the background to see if the deal falls through? I really wanted this piece of property. Answer: A seller is not obligated to accept the highest price because there are a variety of issues in a real estate sale agreement. That said, I would not have turned down an extra $15,000—but I’m not a bank. You could make a back-up offer. If accepted and the first offer fails, then you might be able acquire the property. However, if you make a back-up offer you might want to offer less than your original

bid given the information supplied by the agent. Speak with a Realtor, if you do not already have one. Question: Is it better to accept a cashonly buyer or one who has lender financing? Or does it make any difference to me? Answer: Assuming the two offers are for the same price, you want the all-cash model. Why? You don’t have to worry about lenders approving the buyer and no one will ask you to help defray the seller’s loan costs by paying points or closing costs. That said, you should expect an allcash buyer to require exactly the same verifications as you would find with a financed transaction—title examination, survey, termite check, home inspection, etc. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Speaking Of Seniors

No, You Don’t Owe Me WOODROW WILCOX On October 16, 2017, a client from Crown Point visited me to show me some papers. He wanted to show me that my work on his medical bill dropped the amount he owed from $328.16 to $61.15. He had a Plan N Medicare supplement insurance policy. That policy has co-pays which the more popular plans do not have. The original problem with the first bill was an identity mistake. The client was born in a European country. His birth certificate was written in the British method of giving dates with the day first instead of the month first. In the British method, July 8, 2000 would be typed as 8-7-2000. This created confusion about his date of birth and identity. I helped him pinpoint and fix the problem so that his claims would be handled smoothly from now on. “You really helped me. I owe you something,” the client said to me.

“No, you don’t owe me anything. Just pray for me. I have my problems, too,” I responded to him. He smiled and said he would. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency prides itself in “going the extra mile” for our senior citizen clients. If your insurance agency or agent does not “go the extra mile” for clients, maybe you should switch to an agency that does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dollars by fighting mistakes and fraud in the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ (www. SolvingMedicareProblems. com and posts articles at www.WoodrowWilcox.com.

New Book Celebrates Illinois Bicentennial The History of Illinois contains over forty photos and is complete with bibliography, annotated footnotes, and index, and includes an additional four articles by Emery relating to the history of the state. Despite Illinois’ countless figures and events of interest, surprisingly little has been written in recent years on the general history of Illinois. Emery’s book fills the gap with a comprehensive look at the stories that have defined the state, including the pre-statehood era, railroads, agriculture, inventions, Lincoln and the Civil War, gender and racial advancements, the Haymarket Affair, the Chicago Fire and World’s Fair, and the wars of the 20th century. Emery says that readers can learn a lot from the book in just a little time. “This isn’t something that takes a long time to read or learn from, remarked Emery. “A reader can pick up the book, turn to any page, spend a few minutes, and take something away from it.

A new, full-length book on the history of Illinois celebrates the state’s bicentennial while covering the fascinating people, places, and events of the last 250 years in the state. The History of Illinois is a fullydocumented and illustrated softcover work of 220 pages compiled from a newspaper column on Illinois history by acclaimed historian Tom Emery of Carlinville, IL. Emery is a contributor to multiple Illinois newspapers who has lectured on his research statewide. Emery’s column ran from May 2014 to January 2017, and covered all of the leading topics of state history, including top leaders, political and social history, arts and culture, military, women’s issues, racial progression, industrial advancements, disasters and, of course, Abraham Lincoln. The History of Illinois is intended to complement the state’s upcoming 200th anniversary, as Illinois achieved statehood December 3, 1818.

The History of Illinois appeals to readers of all ages and levels of interest in history, including students. “I wanted this book to be easy for everyone to read, said Emery. “The history of the state belongs to everyone, and I wanted to reach a general audience, with people of all ages and interests. The book is being released just in time for the Christmas holidays, though quantities will be limited. Delivery is expected around December 20 for orders received by December 8. Orders received after that date are not guaranteed to be filled/delivered in time for Christmas. The History of Illinois sells for $27 ($21.99 plus $1.37 tax and $3.64 postage and handling). Orders may be placed with PayPal (use the e-mail enjoyhistorytoday@gmail.com) or by mail by sending your name, address, phone, and check or money order to History in Print, 337 E. RICHARD ZEKVELD isolated by shame, fear and threats, unable to voice to their sufferings? How many grieve the silence of the departed loved one whose voice they will never hear again in this life? Jesus took our place to endure our suffering silence. “He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth” (Isaiah 53:7). But silence can be life-giving in relationship with God. We need silence in our noisy Wi-Fi world. We need silent spaces to encounter the living God in his word, in worship and in prayer. Silence clears the clutter of our souls, helping us tune in to God, others and ourselves. Carve out spaces for silence in your life. You can’t afford not to.

Silence. Is it satisfying or stressful? Do you enjoy it or escape it? Is it golden or oppressive? How you answer depends on the conditions of your silence. If you live with inner turmoil – guilt, regret, bitterness, anxiety, oppressive secrets, emotional pain – silence surfaces it, like the background noise of a furnace or a fly in the quiet night hours. So we run from silence, filling our lives with noise and busyness to distract us from the deeper disquiet. Unconfessed guilt moved David to say, “When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer” (Psalm 32:3-4). The solution? Confession and God’s forgiveness! External stresses also produce silence. How many live in the silence of relational tension? Or trapped in the silence of abuse,

Financial Advice Column

How Can You Share Your Financial “Abundance” With Your Family? BOB KRYGSHELD Thanksgiving is almost here. The spirit of the holiday invites us to be grateful for what we have and for the presence of our loved ones. But it’s important to look beyond just one day in November if you want your family to take part in your “abundance.” If you want to ensure your financial resources eventually are shared in the way you envision, you will need to follow a detailed action plan, including these steps: • Identify your assets. If you haven’t done so already, it’s a good idea to take an inventory of all your financial assets – your retirement accounts, other investments, life insurance, real estate, collectibles and other items. Once you know exactly what you have, you can determine how you would like these assets distributed among your loved ones. • Get professional help. To ensure your assets go to the right people, you will need to create some legal documents, such as a will and a living trust. The depth and complexity of these instruments will depend a great deal on your individual circumstances, but in any case, you certainly will need to consult with a legal professional because estate planning is not a “do-it-yourself” endeavor. You may also need to work with a tax professional and your financial advisor, as taxes and investments are key components of the legacy you hope to leave. • Protect your financial independence. Protect yourself, and your financial assets, in several ways. For

one thing, you may want to work with your legal professional to create a power of attorney, which would enable someone – possibly a grown child – to make financial decisions for you, should you become incapacitated. Also, you may want to guard yourself against the devastating costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay. Medicare typically pays very little of these expenses, but a financial advisor may be able to suggest techniques or products that can help. • Communicate your wishes. Once in place, you’ll want to communicate your plans to your loved ones. By doing so, you’ll be sparing your loved ones from unpleasant surprises when it’s time to settle your estate. And, second, by making your plans and wishes known to your family well in advance of when any action needs to be taken, you’ll prepare your loved ones for the roles you wish them to assume, such as taking on power of attorney, serving as executor of your estate, and so on. And you’ll also want to make sure your family is acquainted with the legal, tax and financial professionals you’ve chosen to help you with your estate plans. Thanksgiving comes just once a year. Taking the steps described here can help ensure your family will share in your financial abundance as you intended. A monumental Aztec calendar draws the eye to the center of the float, where 44 donors are honored with floragraphs. Alongside the float, eight living donors and recipients will carry baskets of fruit and flowers in celebration of the renewed life they share through organ donation. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

With a theme called “The Gift of Time,” the 2018 “Donate Life” float will carry donor families, living donors, and transplant recipients as part of the Rose Bowl events Monday, January 1 in Pasadena, CA. The float will depict a vibrantly colored, tropical backdrop that evokes the ancient civilizations of Mexico. Celebrating the gift of life, 16 costumed organ recipients will sit alongside the jungle against a backdrop of stone carvings, symbolizing the strength they have gained from their donors to continue and thrive on life’s journey. For a seventh year, Community Healthcare System, Gift of Hope Organ & Tissue Donor Network, and VisionFirst have joined with families to honor the area’s organ, eye and tissue donors. A “Donate Life” Rose Dedication Ceremony was held Nov. 1 at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts to formally sendoff 50 roses that will help make up the Donate Life float. “These dedicated roses . . . add special meaning not only for the families of our organ and tissue donors, but serve to inspire others to become organ, eye and tissue donors as well,” said Jana Lacera, rose ceremony coordinator and director of Bioethics at Community Healthcare System. Transplant recipients were in attendance to share with donor families the impact of donors’ gifts on their lives. Angelique Marseille of Lansing, IL was in college when, on a trip home, her twin sister pointed out her eyes were yellow. She soon

developed spontaneous bruising on her legs. Then she developed acne, cysts and boils on her face. Blood tests revealed idiopathic biliary ductopenia, which had led to advanced cirrhosis of the liver. Her liver was functioning at only 5 to 10 percent. Without a liver transplant, she would die within 10 days. In the hospital near death, a nurse came to pray with her. “Later that evening a knock at the hospital room door told me an organ was available. All I could think about was that someone lost their brother, son, mother or daughter.” “That was 24 years ago,” she continues. “Because of my donor’s generosity, I finished college. I had two little sisters that I would not have gotten a chance to know and who are both joys of my life. I got married, had 2 sons, got to grow old with my twin sister. I will never take the donor’s gift for granted.” Organ and tissue donations save and heal hundreds of thousands of adults and children each year in the U.S. alone. One person can save up to eight lives through the donation of lifesaving organs—heart, kidney, liver, lungs, pancreas and small intestine—and help more than 50 people who need corneas to see, skin to heal from burns, and bones and connective tissue for knee, back and dental surgeries. In addition, some 6,000 lives per year are saved by living kidney and liver donors. You can register your intent to be an organ and tissue donor while obtaining or renewing your drivers’ license, or by registering online at www.donatelife.net.

Bishop Noll Hosts Open House

A Good CMA successful ones! Matching these listings as closely as possible serves as a good indicator of how your home will perform in the current market. Note: Pending sales are generally treated like active listings for the simple reason that you just don’t know what offer was accepted, or whether the sale will actually close. As a general rule of thumb, Realtors like to stay within a 3-month window for comparable closed sales. We also try to narrow down the list of comparables to a specific geographic radius (usually 1 square mile), only widening the gap when necessary. This keeps the information as relevant as possible. It’s the job of the listing agent to take all these factors into account in an attempt to find a “happy medium”. Rest assured that with a professional on the job, you won’t be steered in the wrong direction. The CMA is just another step on the road to something big! Bishop Noll Institute’s open house will welcome families of 7th- and 8th-graders interested in attending the private Catholic high school. The class of 2017 earned $8.1 million in college scholarship offers. _______________________________

Families considering a Bishop Noll Institute education can attend an upcoming open house to see the school in action. Bishop Noll, a private Catholic high school located at 1519 Hoffman St. in Hammond, will host the open house from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6. “Those who attend the open house will see what continues to make Noll successful in its 97th year serving the youth of Northwest Indiana and south suburbs,” said Nancy Repay, Director of Admissions. “Attendees can see first-hand what makes us an A-rated school, hear about our 1:1 iPad program, and learn about our STEM curriculum.” Prospective students and their families will tour the school, meet current students, teachers and coaches, and learn about how Bishop Noll educates students in mind, body and spirit. “We will also offer information about financial aid and scholarships, and educate families about how private education can be more affordable than they think,” Repay said. Bishop Noll students have more than 20 sports and two dozen clubs and activities to choose from including Science Olympiad, Drama Club, Academic Super Bowl, Speech and Debate, Art Club, Biology Club, Tri-M Music, newspaper and yearbook. The school participates in Project Lead the Way’s STEM program, which immerses students into the world of design and computer modeling. Noll offers 10 AP and dual college credit courses, in addition to honors courses in English, math, science and foreign languages. Bishop Noll students take part in spiritual retreats, monthly all-school Masses and a variety of community service projects. Bishop Noll participates in the Indiana School Choice program. The school’s next entrance exam will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Dec. 16. The fee is $25, but those who attend the open house will receive a $5 discount. Happy Thanksgiving! ARLO KALLEMEYN

MIKE BUDER When a Realtor comes to your home for a listing appointment, the crux of activity is centered around what we in the industry refer to as the Comparative Market Analysis (CMA). To the inexperienced sellers out there, here’s a brief overview of how a CMA works: It’s your home versus every other comparable property in the immediate area! This is how we, as agents, help our sellers establish a realistic asking price. Recently sold listings, expired listings, and active listings all need to be taken into account while establishing an acceptable price range. And believe you me, the vast amount of properties on the market today make it necessary to take great care in compiling a “good” CMA. Let’s go over how each listing type affects the CMA: • ACTIVE LISTINGS This is your competition! The idea is to basically attempt to out price your competitors, addressing subtle differences in value between your home and the rest. • EXPIRED LISTINGS Learn from the shortcomings of others! These homes never make it to closing because they were most likely priced incorrectly, though, in some case serious defects may have been present. • RECENTLY SOLD LISTINGS Homes that make it to closings are obviously the

Thanksgiving has arrived again. Not sure how that happened. It seems like we were just celebrating the 4th of July. Unlike some other holidays in this country that are optional, everyone loves Thanksgiving (everyone except the turkeys I guess). There is a Thanksgiving tradition that the President of the United States pardons one turkey every Thanksgiving. The lucky gobbler is spared the hatchet and gets to live out his life in a kid’s petting zoo in Virginia. That is one lucky bird that wins the Turkey Lottery game of chance. Speaking of games of chance, it is said that the Pilgrims would not have survived without the help of the Native Americans. Now, thanks to the neglect of the U.S. government, Indians are forced to rely on casinos and gambling to support their people. Early settlers traded useless beads and trinkets to the Indians for valuable furs, horses and land. After the deal was made, the white man laughed at the Indians. Now at reservation casinos, the white man drops his dollar in the slot machine owned by the Indians. Who’s laughing now? Hopefully you can spend some quality time with family and friends and reflect on the blessings in your life. While there are plenty of things to be thankful for, I’m especially thankful for the great people in my life—family, friends, co-workers and customers. Thanks to you for reading this paper. We appreciate our loyal customers and readers. As I was sitting down to write this week’s column, I wondered what famous people had said about giving thanks and gratitude. Below are some of the more memorable quotes: It is literally true, as the thankless say, that they have nothing to be thankful for. He who sits by the fire, thankless for the fire, is just as if he had no fire. Nothing is possessed save in appreciation, of which thankfulness is the indispensable ingredient. But a thankful heart hath a continual feast. — W. J. Cameron Best of all is it to preserve everything in a pure, still heart, and let there be for every pulse a thanksgiving, and for every breath a song. — Konrad von Gesner Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift. — The Apostle Paul Thank you, dear God For all You have given me, For all You have taken away from me, For all You have left me. — Anonymous Thou, who hast given so much to me, give me one more thing… a grateful heart! — George Herbert Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others. — Cicero He who receives a good turn should never forget it; he who does one should never remember it. — Charron We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures. — Thornton Wilder Perhaps it takes a purer faith to praise God for unrealized blessings than for those we once enjoyed or those we enjoy now. — A. W. Tozer May your stuffing be tasty May your turkey plump, May your potatoes and gravy Have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious And your pies take the prize, And may your Thanksgiving dinner Stay off your thighs! — Anonymous Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. Some people travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often! — Johnny Carson As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them. — John Fitzgerald Kennedy Happy Thanksgiving everyone! NEW COFFEE SHOP OPENS IN WHITING: In Phase II of their lives, the Banske Family of Calumet City decided to open a coffee shop on a charming corner of Whiting, Indiana. The new shop is called Comfort Roast Coffee House and Cafe and is located at 1424 119th Street, the corner of 119th and Oliver in the heart of ‘downtown’ Whiting. Pictured here are Rich and Patti Banske along with Caitlynn Edinger, wait staff extraordinaire. After careful research on consumer’s tastes in coffee and teas, the Banskes came up with some amazing drip, Espressos, Lattes and Frappes, hot, iced or blended and some super special hot or iced teas and yummy smoothies. All teas are available with ‘bubbles.’ In a complete departure from his previous career (formerly the Assistant Chief of the Calumet City Fire Depa r t ment) Rich a nd Patt i decided to take a chance on Whiting and make something we all love—coffee and tea! And, coming just after the New Year 2018, will be a Comfort Roast Kitchen which will offer breakfast and lunch. So traditional brea k fa st s of eg gs, bac on/sau sa ge, omelettes, sweet rolls and so on will be followed by a lunch of sandwiches and the trimmings and desserts.
