The production will be directed Mark Baer (Assistant Professor of Acting and Directing at Indiana University Northwest). Towle Theater seeks 2 strong Female actors late 20’s to mid 40’s. Thornton Township Grants Christmas Wishes

What can be referred to as The Miracle on 162nd Street took place in South Holland Saturday, Dec. 21st as Thornton Township distributed nearly 5,000 gifts to 1,200 children from disadvantaged families. The bright smiles on the children’s faces as they received their gifts and took a picture with Santa told the whole story. Parents who are struggling are truly grateful for the Children’s Christmas Tree Gift Program. South Holland resident Myrna Sue Pierson, a struggling single mom is work ing t wo jobs and completing her education at South Suburban College so she can provide a better life for her family. “I’m so grateful that the township is there to help out,” she said. Donna Williams of Dolton picked up gifts for her 10 yearold son Daniel. Williams who has been unemployed for 2-1/2 years said the program brings back joy and hope during stressful times and is glad the township is there to help during tough times. Matisha James was just evicted from her home because the family of six fell on hard times due to medical costs related to the premature birth of her last child and lost income due to her husband’s time off work. “Some years we didn’t need the help. I’m glad this program is still around when we needed it. This will make Christmas brighter for our family,” the Dolton resident said. Jill Manning, the township’s director of special projects said township staff and 10-15 volunteers start wrapping gifts on Dec. 1 and work from 9 am to 8 pm five days a week. Whatever gifts the township does not receive are purchased to ensure that every child receives gifts. Manning said no one

Denise Branch of Harvey who has been volunteering for six years agrees. “I love helping people and this is a wonderful way to do it,” she said. South Holland resident Leslie Pinter said she and her sister Vicky dropped off gifts one year and the next thing they knew they were wrapping gifts. “It’s been a very rewarding experience,” Leslie said. The tow nship also distributed 3,500 boxes of food previously to provide a holiday meal for township residents in need to fight the war on hunger. Thornton Township Clerk Jacqueline Rivera said, “being a member of the township government means so much to me because of the spirit of giving that exists here. We come together as a team under the leadership of Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli who is committed to helping those in need.” “It is an honor to come here and help out the needy so that they can have a safe and blessed Christmas,” said Thornton Township Trustee Norbert Cipowski. This is Trustee Joyce Washington’s 16th year participating in the program. “It has been one feel good ride,” she said. “We serve 17 communities in the south suburbs and we work hard to reach out to every one of them. The township is very fortunate to be able to provide a program like this. Supervisor Zuccarelli is committed to helping brighten their holiday.” “This is one of my favorite events of the year and one I always look forward to,” said Director of Finance and Dolton Trustee Robert Hunt. Supervisor Zuccarelli believes that miracles still happen when there’s love in our hearts.

The prices seem less risky. A: If you’re really thinking of buying, know that a condo’s lower price doesn’t necessarily mean lower risk. Because too many condos were built during the hou si ng boom — a nd bec au se ma ny people bought condos as investments, not residences—they’ve been among the hardest hit properties since the real estate bubble burst. Ask your Realtor for data on how local condo values have fared compared with single-family homes in recent years. The Chicago south suburban condo market was hit especially hard and remains depressed. You should also know that the Federal Housing Administration has restrictions on the number of units that must be owner occupied. If you plan to use an FHA-insured loan, you also need to check if a condo development is FHA approved. Just because a female has developed breasts and has shapely hips does not make her a woman. And,

Illiana Heating & Air Conditioning Joins Forces With The Women’s Diagnostic Center To Help Fight Breast Cancer Good neighbors Tom and Sue Krygsheld believe in taking care of their own and paying it forward along the way. During the month of October, the Krygshelds held a fundraiser to honor their employee Shelley DeYoung, a breast cancer survivor. A portion of the proceeds from Illiana Heating & Air Conditioning’s service calls were set aside to help other women benefit from early detection of breast cancer. Five years after treatment, St. John resident DeYoung credits her recover y, in part, on her healthcare team at Community Hospital, the Women’s Diagnostic Center, and support from her employers – Illiana Heating and Air Conditioning. On behalf of their fundraising efforts, St. John’s Illiana Heating and Air Conditioning general manager Kevin Frump has presented a $4,295 check to Mary Nicholson, MD, medical director of the women’s center in Munster. The funding is earmarked for patients who don’t have insurance and need diagnostic imaging. “T h is generous donat ion w i l l help supplement a grant we have received from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust that covers approximately 50 screening mammograms,” said Nicholson. “We’re working to help women believe the truth that early detected breast cancers can be treated successfully. We strive to ease our patients’ minds, alleviate their stress and fear, and replace it with confidence in care that’s close to home. This funding will enable us to serve many more with the care they need,” she said.

Proceeds from installs and service calls during the month went to an account set up through Community Hospital to help other local women – those without insurance and who otherwise couldn’t afford them - receive diagnostic imaging at the Women’s Diagnostic Center. Breast cancer is a disease that can be diagnosed early through routine mammography. The Women’s Diagnostic Center of Community Hospital offers digital mammography with same day results. With advances such as same-day results and coordination between area physicians, women can generally begin treatment for breast cancer within 10 days of diagnosis – saving lives. In 2011 and 2012, the Krygshelds also provided donations to the Women’s Diagnostic Center as a result of their October fundraiser. Diagnostic imaging was made available to women with that funding and more than one has turned out to be positive for breast cancer – providing care where there wouldn’t have been an opportunity otherwise. In Darkness... Seen A Great Light! ANNA M. CAISON

At the beginning of the year I issued a challenged that instead of setting the traditional resolutions that we rarely if ever keep beyond the first two weeks of January, we would begin the New Year with a single focus of being “light” and meditating on it throughout the year. As we get ready to transition into the next year, I feel pressed to end this year with a thought from Isaiah that speaks of a “Great Light.” The prophet w rote: “In Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” This passage of scripture was fulfilled when Jesus began His ministry in Galilee. Not only did the people walk in outer darkness (dark society) they also dealt with personal darkness within. W hen Jesu s c a me on t he sc ene preaching the Kingdom of God is at hand, the people who believed His message saw and heard the voice of God through Him. Four fishermen left their boats and followed Him. A tax collector left his table and followed. Another tax collector

didn’t leave his table, but he changed the way he did business; he stopped cheating citizens. The hopeless received hope and those who were tormented were set free. The social outcasts were accepted in His presence and the sick were made well. His life was the Great Light that turned the hearts of the people back to the creator and they became the children of God. What about you and me? Jesus said we are the Light of the world! We have within us the power to turn the hearts of men and women, boys and girls to God. Don’t allow politics to snuff out your light, or let fear make you hide your identity to Christ. Remember Jesus has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. We are more than conquers through Him who loves us. Let’s demonstrate our love for Him by entering the New Year as lit candles, lighting our world for His glory and the salvation of humanity. What’s Your Big Idea? KEVIN BRADLEY Happy New Year! 2014 is already here. Time seems to keep ticking faster every year. As we enter the New Yea r it is t rad it iona l ly an opportunity for us to reflect upon the year past and consider the year at hand, contemplating goals for self improvement and strategies for achiev ing these goals. Most people tend to do so with the best of intentions, yet manage to st ick to t hei r noble cause for a ver y shor t time. Old habits are hard to brea k. Creat ing rea l cha nge requires ta k ing yourself out of your tried a nd t r ue com for t zone and having the courage, determination, a nd fortitude to stick to the plan long enough to reach your goal while enduring self sacrificing discomfort. If you manage to stay the cou rse long enoug h to begin noticing results you will receive a huge boost in motivation at which point t hings w ill begin to become less difficult as your brain absorbs the endor ph i ns a ssociated with self accomplishment. Unfortunately most p e ople don’t f ol low t hrough w it h t heir resolutions. I have some advice which may help. Only make a resolution i f it is somet h i ng you genuinely w ish for you rsel f. Don’t choose something just to please ot hers. Rea l i ze t hat resolutions mean nothing if you are not willing to do whatever it ta kes to make it happen; so if you can’t see yourself taking

t he steps necessar y for this to become a reality, perhaps you don’t really wa nt it a ll t hat bad. If you find something you really want to accomplish and are willing to follow t h roug h to ma ke it happen, f i rst resea rch the steps you w ill need to ta ke to achieve t his goal. Writing them down can be helpful. Once you have the steps; visualize yourself performing them. Try and also visualize any obstacles that may occur which can block you from achiev ing your desired goa l. Ma ke you r pla ns now for how you will deal w it h t hese obstacles to be better prepared when they occur. Having and following a plan of attack will help you to achieve your goals. Last year I wrote my goals as working to get my manuscript published traditionally and losing 30 pounds. I have lost the 30 pounds and kept it off. On this front, I plan to continue eating healthy (90% of the time…we all need to indulge once in a while). I will also keep work i ng towa rds t he difficult goal of traditional book publication. I have learned a lot and continue to le a r n more i n t h i s endeavor. In fact, I will be sending 2,500 words to a literary agent for a critique today. I hope that the New Year brings you happiness and serenity. When the years start to speed up, we all realize that there is not an unlimited supply of them. It’s hard to believe that Y2K was over 10 years ago already! There has been some extraordina rily sad new s rega rd i ng you ng people in our area over t he Chr ist mas holiday. T he s e t e en a ger s w er e planning their holidays with anticipation of good t i mes w it h fa m i ly a nd f r iend s. However, t wo young teenage girls lost their lives to violence in u nex pected a nd t rag ic ways. Young men have been cha rged a nd a re now in ja i l wa it ing for their court trail. Random g unshots took one life, a nd a dr ug dea l mi xed up w ith handguns took another. I’m sure that the you ng people i nvolved all wish that they could

w ind back t he clock of time - and relive the day where violence touched their lives. But, we only get to live each day once. The decisions we ma ke ca n’t be undone – a nd t he c on s e quenc e s a re not opt iona l. We have control over our choices, but not the results of those choices. I hope that the young people in this area will ma ke good choices i n t he New Yea r - a nd be especia l ly ca ref u l who t hey associate w it h. You ng people need to hear from their parents a nd g ra ndpa rents how important good friends are – and how dangerous others are. As the Bible in Corinthians says, “Do not be deceived : “Bad compa ny r u i ns good mora ls.” Young people need to hear that a long life is not an automatic right given to all. Resolutions MIKE BUDER Most people I know set at least one “New Year’s R e s o l u t i on”; I m y s e l f have set a few, including: reading the entire bible, eating better, and getting into the habit of exercising more f re quent l y. 47 Ronin (2013) PG-13 - 119 min - Action | Adventure | Fantasy - 25 December 2013 (USA) SY NOPSIS : A ba nd of samurai set out to avenge the death and dishonor of their master at the hands of a ruthless shogun. REVIEW: Strange – I’m having a bit of déjà vu sitting here trying my hardest not to make the obvious joke of Keanu Reeves knowing kung -fu. Weren’t we just exposed to a movie where Keavu tries to display his ancient fighting knowledge? Oh yes, that was ‘Man Of Tai Chi’, a more modern film compared to his most recent effort, ‘47 Ronin’. Fi rst t i me d i rector Ca rl R i nsch cer ta i n ly is starting on an incredibly ambitious note, tasked with helming a 3D movie heavy w ith mystical w itchcraft, choreog raphed batt le sequences, and fantastical creatures conjured using CGI technology. Openingagainstheavyhitters like DiCaprio, Stallone, and De Niro, will Keanu’s moves be enough to score a box office miracle? On top of this, Rinsch’s f ig ht sequences seem a bit more slapst ick t ha n

ex plosive, aga i n h it t i ng on a st r a nge tone t h at doesn’t ever per m it t he feeling of an action epic, stay i ng somewhere i n e a s y-to-w atch ter r itor y. It’s rather bland, pulls the least amount of punches possible, a nd especia l ly consider i ng t he Ron i n’s final plan, it’s more silly t ha n a ny t hing. There a re c er t a i n l y f u n-f i l le d moment s, but when it becomes t ime for a t r ue battle, ‘47 Ronin’ remains unfavorably goofy, wasting s o m a n y opp or t u n it ie s for truly stylized martial artistry. W it h a n a l l-sta r ca st of Japanese actors, it’s a sha me to say ‘47 Ron i n’ isn’t a fitting adventure for true martial arts film fans. Most of the problems I’ve mentioned above stem from an awfully underdeveloped and watered-dow n script whose on ly mot ivat ions appear to be Americanizing sa mu ra i cu lt u res a nd making a 3D movie to cash in on the heightened price of admission – failing at both. There’s a reason the best samurai films come from overseas, subtitles and all – and without this American 3D obsession. There isn’t a single scene found in Rinsch’s film that begs for the pain of wearing those bothersome, cheap 3D glasses, but this is just one of t he ma ny w rong moves ‘47 Ronin’ ma kes. Why don’t we just stick to our gun-slinging Westerns a nd let t he tr ue masters worry about making quality samurai films – )which will just end up being remade, anyways.) Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES Happy New Year 2014! It is now sixty-nine years since the end of W W II. Thankfully, there are still W W II vetera n s i n ou r midst, a nd we need to cherish these heroes of the Greatest Generation while we still can. Ma ny of t he W W I I letters I read a re f rom W W II heroes that have sadly passed on. But I like to keep t he memor y of them alive by sharing with you, the very words they wrote. Master Sergeant Rober t Buetow ser ved in W W II. He belonged t o t h e 5 4t h A r m or e d Field Artillery Battalion , stationed in Germany. This week, we continue with the second part of his letter: Saturday, May 26, 1945 Sweetheart darling, Our weather has been a little better here, with more sunshine, but the mornings and nights are still pretty chilly. Incidentally, darling, you’re still the most-missed person in the whole wide world, and always will be whenever we’re apart. I miss you even more than ever when I remember that two years ago we were

having such wonderful days (and nights!) together, mommy. Those days will be with us again, and it shouldn’t be so very long before they’re here either. I still don’t have any idea of what’s coming up in the future, but I have a good hunch that my f ighting days are over, and that I’ll eventually be coming home to the States. It’s liable to be quite awhile before that happens, so all we can do is just wait and hope. As long as some dope somewhere along the line doesn’t decide that I’m “essential”, everything will be all right. I’m going to close now and clean up a little bit before I go to bed, ‘cause perhaps you’ll visit me in my dreams tonight, and I certainly want to be looking my best if that should happen. COLDWELL BANKER WELCOMES NEW AGENT : About 5 years ago Matthew R. Tomsic was at a life changing point in his life. He did not know what he wanted to do, as there are so many options out there. On December 17th was the date he was introduced to his first real best friend Rhuckus aka Chuck. He was the families’ first horse, but soon had a strong bond with Matthew. They were a perfect match. Chuck taught Matthew a lot about life and caring for a living creature. Matthew learned a lot from this for example; Self Discipline, Patience, Loyalty, Trust, and Honesty (You cannot lie to an animal that feels what you do). After several years of learning together and growing together Chuck became sick and was no longer able to be ridden anymore and was retired as the most beautiful pasture ornament. Taking care of him, sick or not made Matthew realize he wanted to help people. The big question was how, and how fast could he do it. After watching about 15 minutes of HGTV, Matthew knew he wanted to help people make the biggest investments in their life and that was simply finding a place called home, using all the things Rhuckus had taught him. A home just like Rhuckus and Matthew had. ***

DISABLED DAD SEEKS HELP DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON: How sad that in this land of plenty there are still people hurting and hungry out there. This pix was snapped on Indianapolis Blvd in Schererville during Christmas week. The person in the photo lives nearby and is a disabled American Veteran who has not had any luck finding a job. He has a wife and kids at home and nothing under the tree this year. He had some luck with social networks but not enough to keep the family afloat for any length of time. He is hopeful that after the New Year he will have better luck finding that job he needs so badly. He is in my prayers and I hope yours as well. ***

GEORGE PETRICH AND HIS ROSIE TRAVEL THE WORLD: Or at least the Eastern seaboard this time. The Burnham couple, (he is an attorney and a judge with the Burnham court, wife Rose is a member of several organizations, most importantly, the Slovenian Women’s Union) take time to travel each year visiting their children who are in several different states. This year found them in New York City where George complained that a plate of spaghetti cost $15! And the rent was even higher! Along for the visit were the Petrich’s daughter Anne Marie Marinelli and hubby Vincent and Mark Petrich (son) and his wife Katherine. By ferry they traveled from New Jersey to Manhattan in about 8 minutes, took in an inspiring view of “Lady Liberty” the Statue of Liberty, and took a walk thru Central Park, thinking of John Lennon’s “Yesterday!” A long time member of the Hegewisch Lions Club, George and Rosie plan to go to the 2014 Lion’s Convention in Toronto.
