Tougher Penalties for Abuse of the Disability Parking Program The law proposed by Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White to crack down on fraud and abuse of the state’s disability parking program takes effect January 1st. The new law includes toughening the penalties for those who abuse a deceased person’s placard or disability license plate.

first meeting of his Advisory Committee on Traffic Safety – a committee to make Illinois roads safer, reduce traffic fatalities and to consider increased penalties for those who blatantly disregard traffic laws. Public Act 97-844, which was sponsored by State Representative John D’Amico (D-Chicago) and Senator Martin Sandoval (D-Cicero), toughens penalties for those who abuse parking privileges designed to assist persons with disabilities. Public Act 97-844 strengthens the penalty for using a placard and/or disability license plates in which the person is now deceased, which under the previous law fell under the category of general misuse of a placard or plate. The law creates a new offense for this egregious act, making it a Class A Misdemeanor, which carries a minimum one-year driver’s license revocation and a $2,500 fine. In addition, the license suspension periods for general misuse of a disability license plate or placard increases from 30 days to a six-month suspension for a first offense; from six months to a one-year suspension for a second offense as well as increasing the fine from $750 to $1,000, and from a oneyear suspension to a minimum one-year revocation for a third offense. A license revocation requires the offender to meet with a Secretary of State Administrative Hearing officer at the end of their revocation period before driving privileges may be restored. “My goal is to eliminate fraud and misuse, and to ensure that disability parking spots are available for those truly in need,” said White.

What constitutes an “obstruction” is not always clear but depends on the testimony and evidence presented at a court hearing. The Munster High School FIRST Robotics Team have been lending a helping hand to a 6-month old kitten named Tapas at the Humane Society Calumet Area. Tapas was brought in a garbage can to the shelter, when he was 3-months old. It was then discovered that he had very limited mobility in his back legs which prevents him from walking. Upon researching and brainstorming countless ideas of how to help out this kitten’s mobility, Liz Popovich, Humane Society Calumet Area’s Lab Technician, came across blueprints on the internet of a cat wheel-cart. then decided to contact the Munster High School FIRST Robotics Team to ask for assistance in building this cart. The Robotics Team happily took on the task and built two different models of the wheel-cart for Tapas. The team discovered that the second cart was better suited for Tapas’ needs. As of right now, Tapas is learning how to get around in his new cart. “I completely adore Tapas. He is a little fighter, who does not let his condition bring him down.” said Popovich, who works with him daily.

mike buder As we anticipate the arrival of 2013 with the traditional optimism of “a new year”, I would like to take a sobering look at the housing market over the past few years. Many of us have seen depreciation in our home values averaging 25% to 30% and even higher in some areas. Many of us have been challenged by becoming unemployed or underemployed, but if you have managed to keep your home through this economic storm “CONSIDER YOURSELF BLESSED”. Few things are as devastating as losing your home. In 2012, millions of people lost their homes due to foreclosure. In many cases the foreclosure could’ve been avoided with some outside help. If you are struggling to meet your monthly mortgage payments try to get help. Don’t believe that it will be better to let the foreclosure happen. Because after you lose your home, you will still need to find a new place to live. All too often, the price you will need to pay in rent will be almost as high if not higher than your current mortgage payment. Remember: the owner of the property you rent from needs to make their mortgage payment too, so they’re probably going to charge a rental payment that’s higher than their mortgage costs. If you let your home go to foreclosure, you may also end up with a deficiency judgment against you for the amount your lender lost in the foreclosure sale. Despite what many people think, most lending institutions are not anxious to foreclose. It’s a last ditch effort to recover their money and minimize their losses and it’s an incredible hassle. Most lenders would

rather avoid it if possible. There are multiple sources for help that you should be aware of, and most lenders will be happy to hear that their clients are going to try to keep their home rather than just await a foreclosure. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development maintains a list of HUD approved counseling agencies. You can call (800) 569-4287 to find the agency nearest you. FHA borrowers may qualify to have HUD make a one-time payment to bring your mortgage current. Go to www. makinghomeaffordable.gov for more information on the requirements to qualify. Many borrowers can qualify for a SPECIAL FORBEARANCE. This is a new payment structure if you’ve had an increase in your cost of living, such as unexpected medical expenses, or a decrease in wages. This payment structure will allow you to repay the lender in a given time frame. You can also talk to a loan officer about the possibility of refinancing your mortgage to a more affordable program. Overhead Door Company of Northwest Indiana’s Christmas toy drive ended with over 100 toys collected. The toy amount was divided in half and donated to Toys for Tots of Lake County and Henry P. Fieler Elementary School in Merrillville. The toys were collected from November 29 until December 21 in the showroom located in Merrillville. Boxes were filled and delivered by Overhead Door Company’s General Manager, Tom Cameron. “There is an enormous need for donations,” Cameron said. “I was impressed by the amount of donations there were” he said, “I was happy with the turnout overall, not Wanted: Room To Rent: I am looking for a room to rent. Django Unchained (2012) 165 min - Drama | Western 25 December 2012 (USA) SYNOPSIS: With the help of his mentor, a slave-turnedbounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner. REVIEW: Django Unchained is Tarantino’s most straightforward story since Jackie Brown, told in sequence, without chapters or other dividers, and focusing at all times on its two main characters. Django (Jamie Foxx), a slave, is freed in the film’s opening moments by Dr. King Shultz (Christoph Waltz), a bounty hunter who needs Django’s assistance in tracking down the treacherous Brittle Brothers, a trio of murderous slave traders whose visual identities are known only to Django. In return for Django’s help, Shultz offers him freedom, as well as assistance in finding and rescuing Django’s wife, Broomhilda (Kerry Washington), previously sold to the wealthy and terrifying plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). While there are certainly unexpected turns and plenty of surprises, that’s the story in a nutshell, and while I love the narrative ambition of Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, and Inglourious

Basterds, it is absolutely refreshing to see Tarantino take a step back and simplify his storytelling. It allows for even greater emphasis on dynamic characterization and evolving relationships – always one of Tarantino’s greatest strengths – but also gives the director license to play with structure on subtle but suggestive levels. In a sense, Django Unchained is built like an hourglass, wherein the first and third acts offer the Western – with heavy Spaghetti Western and exploitation influences, of course – at its most stylish and exciting, while the middle portion dives deep into the heart of the cultural history behind our collective national mythology. In essence, the genre – and, more importantly, the historical elements that lie underneath – is established, broken down and analyzed, and rebuilt as a more whole and satisfying reflection of itself, and I find it amazing just how much Tarantino accomplishes, on an aweinspiring number of levels, over the course of the journey. There has only been a couple films this year that awakened, excited, and satisfied my cinematic senses. But no film succeeded better at its own ambitions or, set it sights quite so high as as Django Unchained. This is not the best film of 2012, but quite possibly an instant classic, and a definitive sign that Tarantino is a filmmaker for the history books, as relevant and important today as at any other point in his career. What’s Your Big Idea? KEVIN BRADLEY The week before Christmas, our clothes dryer decided to break down. It is nearly fourteen ye ar s o l d . E v e r yt h i n g mechanical breaks down sooner or later. It would spin, but would not heat up. I popped the lid and removed the two screws holding the front, removing it as well. From there I could see where the gas came through, but not what ignited it to create heat. It was late, so I went to bed and called my dad (Mr. Fix-it) in the morning. After inspecting the dryer and finding the electrical schematic, he had me take the belt off (which is very difficult to reach on this model) so we could remove the drum. Then he proceeded to test every sensor in the machine, trying to determine the problem. After we had worked on the machine several hours and were still undecided upon the cause of the problem, I was ready to just go buy a new dryer. My dad kept saying, “Are you sure you want to do that? We can fix this for a lot less and it will last you several years.” (And similar statements) I was frustrated that this was taking a lot of time and we hadn’t made any definitive progress. My perspective was derived from working long hours… the time I have off is precious, and I didn’t want to spend it all working on the dryer.

My dad had a different perspective. He considered this a challenge…a puzzle we had to solve. Being retired, and too cold out for golf, he had plenty of time and enjoyed the challenge of finding the problem and making it work. He went home that night and watched dryer repair videos on the internet. The next day we decidedly diagnosed the problem, purchased a new igniter, as well as a new belt that I decided to replace while everything was apart. After installation and re-assembly; I am happy to report the dryer is working good as new. During the repair I had felt frustration, however once we realized we had properly diagnosed the problem and were putting the dryer back together, I began feeling relief, satisfaction, and happiness. Looking back, that broken dryer gave my dad and me some father-son bonding time. We conquered the problem together as a team. That is my new perspective. This story contains one problem and three perspectives. Remember that there are different ways of looking at things. The way you perceive something may change your whole outlook. Medicare Denied Over Half The Bill

WOODROW Wilcox The son of one of our clients brought a bill and a note to me on December 26, 2012. The client wanted to know why he got a bill for $145 on a medical bill for $260 when he had both Medicare and a Medicare supplement insurance policy which he bought through this insurance agency. The client did not send to me the Medicare Summary Notice from Medicare that related to the bill in question. I had nothing with which to compare the bill. I phoned his insurance company to learn what it knew of the bill. Perhaps the insurance company never got the bill from Medicare. In such a case, I would send a letter to get the vital information to the insurance company so that it could pay its share of a bill. But, that was not the case in this matter. Of the bill for $260 of radiological services, Medicare ruled that $145 of the services were not covered by Medicare. That’s over half the bill! If Medicare rules that a medical service is not allowed for Medicare payment, then the Medicare supplement insurance will not pay on that charge either. Kendra used to date Connor, but he broke up with her. Kendra is determined to be the

perfect girl. She will do whatever is necessary to get the perfect body including starving herself and getting a nose job. Andre is the son of Kendra’s plastic surgeon and begins to date her sister Jenna. Jenna proves to be more than Andre can handle as she always needs a drink and flirts with random guys. Jenna also uses Andre to get back at her father who refuses to accept her dating a black boy. Despite all of his relationship problems, Andre is trying to find a way to confess to his father that he does not want to go to college to be a doctor or lawyer, but would rather go to a school for dance. Perfect is a companion to her book Impulse, which tells the story of Cara’s brother. Hopkins has an amazing talent. She weaves the four stories together flawlessly. I listened to this novel on audiobook rather than reading the hard copy. The main reason I chose to do this is the fact that I do not usually read novels in verse. Perfect has four different narrators, one for each character. It was easy to follow the story as the narrators had very distinct voices. I would highly recommend the audio version of the book.
