H2O ARLO KALLEMEYN When the temperature d rops ever yone k nows that water turns to ice – and ice f loats in water. This mea ns t hat ice is less dense t ha n water. However, most t h i ngs sh r i n k w hen f roz en – just look at a cold person who w raps up in a big sweater and huddles on t he couch. Conser v ing body heat means getting as small as possible. So why does water expand a nd not s h r i n k w hen it gets cold enoug h to freeze? The answer lies i n t he l it t le hyd rogen atom. A water molecule is made up of one oxygen and t wo hydrogen atoms. W hen water is a liquid, these molecules mix around very closely to one a not her. E ach mole c u le i s at t r ac te d to other by forces called hydrogen bonds. These bonds keep the molecules close toget her but not permanently fixed in one place. As one molecule moves past another it will break old hydrogen bonds and form new ones, with different water molecules. A s water cools, t he molec u les slow dow n, and get closer together. At about 39 deg rees Fa hren heit, water molecules are as closely packed as they can get. W hen water cont inues to cool, t he indiv idua l molecules start to arrange
themselves into a more stable form. At 32 degrees Fa h ren heit w ater w i l l form the stable solid we call ice. Ice, like most other pure solids, has a crystalline st r uct u re. T h is mea ns t hat t he atoms a re orga n i zed i n a si mple repeating structure, like a cube. The cr ystalline s t r u c t u r e of ic e i s a repeating arrangement of eight molecules of water. T h is a r ra ngement is actually less dense than liquid water at 39 degrees! Ice has less molecu les i n t h e s a m e a m ou nt of space compa red to liquid water. This is a very unique property of water, as most chemicals have solid forms that are denser than their liquid forms. This arrangement of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water is why ice floats. If lakes and rivers froze from the bottom up, it would mean that fish and other wildlife could not survive cold winters – and the spring fishermen would have to make up even bigger fish stories. “W hat good is t he w a r m t h o f s u m m e r, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” John Steinbeck Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of the little hydrogen atom.

Chevy of Homewood Creates Merry Christmas For Family In true holiday spirit, Chevrolet of Homewood made a special gift to a very deserving family. Rosie Collucci is a young lady who has been battling cancer for most of her life. Since the age of just 3 years old, Rosie has been fighting brain cancer, and she has had 26 surgeries. She’s been to the doctor over 400 times and experienced over 230 MRI. Rosie is only 12 years-old ! Rosie’s Christmas wish was that her mom JoAnn would be able to drive a new car to and from the many trips necessary for medical treatment. JoAnn is a single mother of 2 beautiful girls and is currently unemployed. According to Joanne, it is quite difficult to keep a steady job due to the many hospital and doctor visits. During Rosie Collucci’s battle with cancer, the family submitted an essay as part of a holiday contest held by the Chevrolet of Homewood. The Collucci family won the contest, and Rosie and her family visited the dealership on Saturday December 24 - Christmas Eve. Steve Philipos, owner of Chevrolet of Homewood presented the Collucci family the keys to a brand new Chevy Sonic during a celebration that included hugs, and tears of joy. JoAnn commented, “I’m so grateful to the Philipos family and all the folks at Chevrolet of Homewood. I still can’t believe this! We are so blessed to be the recipient of this brand new car. Thank you and God Bless You all - and Merry Christmas from our family!” This is the second year that Homewood Chevy has participated in making an extra special Christmas come true for a deserving family. Homewood Chevy is located at 18033 Halsted St. in Homewood, Illinois and can be located on the web at www.homewoodchevy.com.

2017 Seller Resolutions MIKE BUDER that the basement needs a pa i nt job ? Get some painting bids now. Have you always hated how the bathroom vanity takes up so much space? Consider cha ng ing it now so buyers will perceive your bathroom as bigger. This will also help you spread out t he costs of home repairs and changes over several months. RESLOVE to understand your timing and exit strategy. One of the biggest stresses on a seller is tr y ing to pla n a purchase and sa le at the same time. Can you a f ford to close on t he new home before selling? If so, for how long? Do y ou n e e d t o s e l l t h e property first? If so, will the potential sale price support a home purchase in the neighborhood you want to be in? If not, what other areas should you be looking in? Selling and buying at the same time br i ngs up a l l k i nds of financial, emotional and physical stress. It’s a lot to think about and plan for, engaging a good Realtor now will help you to have a strateg y in place well before you have to take action. Happy New Year, may God bless you and your family in 2017. At t he end of e ver y December, people make all kinds of resolutions f or t h e c om i n g y e a r. Typically, these are things that they want to improve about themselves, ways to m a ke t hei r d ay to day per sona l or work l i fe bet ter, or ideas to put t hem on t rack for a cha nge. Ma ny t i mes these surface as a result of mistakes made in the past 12 months. However, when it comes to rea l estate, resolutions don’t necessarily apply as it’s unlikely that you do a real estate transaction each year. Furthermore, you can’t actually resolve to buy your neighbor’s house or sell your $100,000 home for $ 300,000. Well, you could, but you’d probably be setting yourself up for d i s a pp oi nt m e nt r i g ht f r om t he s t a r t . S ome things are simply out of a would-be seller’s control. But as a would-be seller, you can learn from and make resolutions based on those who have gone before you. Exa mple, I am sure there are current sellers who are resolved to take the next buyer that makes an offer under their asking price a little bit more seriously. If you plan to sell your home in the near future, here are some helpful resolutions that you r m ig ht consider… RESLOVE to think of your home as a product. Start clea n i ng out old st u f f now. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My home is currently for sale. My agent says we should leave our home for all showings. We really feel it is best we are there. Suggestions? Answer: You’re not going to like our answer. We think your agent is giving you very sound advice. We advise our sellers to vacate the home for all show ings. Never, ever, ma ke you r buyers feel uncomfortable in your home, otherwise they will exit quickly. Yes, it is an inconvenience to have to leave your home. But, we can assure you that buyers will spend more time in your home if you aren’t there, and they will talk about it openly with their partner. By doing this, they will become more emotionally vested in your home. Of course, no one will ever know as much about the home as the person that lives there. But you can certainly educate your agent. Place a “showing package” for your home and leave it in a prominent place. You can place seasonal photos, Home and neighborhood amenities, even a letter from the seller talking about their home. Sellers should be aware that at the very least, buyers feel uncomfortable when the owners are present, and that it can kill a sale. Buyers often won’t even open closet or cabinet doors when the seller is

home, and when they cannot view a house comfortably, they’ll hurry up and move on to the next one. Sellers like to talk, and not just about the house. You never know when a buyer will be turned off by the mood of the seller, or by a statement the seller makes. Buyers are there to look at the house, not chit chat about the weather or worse--politics and other controversial topics. Buyers might view a cling y seller as “desperate to sell.” The presence of a pesky seller who insists on overstating a l l t he home’s posit ive benef its ca n appear too overpowering for a potential purchaser. You asked for our opinion, so here is some really good advice for you: If you must be home during a showing, then you should to go outside or stay put in one location, smile a lot, and not wander around with the agent and buyers.

WOODROW WILCOX On December 15, 2016, a client phoned me for some help. The client is an 89 year old woman from Merrillville, Indiana. “Hel lo, Wood y,” s he started. “I don’t know if you remember me . . . .” “Of course, I remember you. You are the very first client that I wrote about i n my book SOLV I NG MEDICARE PROBLEMS!” I answered. She was f lattered. She h a d n ot r e m e m b e r e d that. Years ago, after her husband passed away, she drove about 60 miles to my office to get my help with some medical bills that were not being paid. It was a typical case of Medicare never sending the claims information to her late hu sba nd’s insurance company. That happens often. I fixed the problem and the claims got paid. “I got a paper in t he mail. I don’t understand it and it is difficult to read,” she informed me. “I’m not well enough to leave where I live to bring it to you. When it warms, I’d like to show it to you and have you explain it to me,” she told me. “Wel l, i f it i s rea l l y i mpor t a nt, I’d l i ke to see it right away. Could you come to t he f ront door area of the senior apa r t ments where you live?” I asked. She told me t hat she could. So, I asked one of t he agent s who work s w it h me to go get t he letter from her and bring it to me. W hen I got it, I w a s a m a z e d at t he id ioc y of some people in the Medicare system. The letter was to inform
a sen ior of opt ions a nd choices rega rd i ng Med ica re Pa r t D. But, the letter was on brown paper with black lettering. T hat combi nat ion is difficult or impossible to read for senior citizens with seeing problems – especially color blindness. Who were the Medicare s y stem ma nagers t hat approved sending a letter with such an idiotic color combination? W hoever t he y a re, I hope t hat D o n a l d Tr u m p f i n d s and fires them for their incompetence. T h e r e a r e m a n y problems w it h t he Med ica re s y stem. T he pr oble m s c o s t s e n ior cit i zens over a bi l l ion dol la rs per yea r in med ica l bi l ls t hat t he senior citizens really don’t owe but a re hou nde d t o p a y. T h e p e o p l e , contractors, and systems of Medicare don’t serve senior citizens well. But, they do serve government bureaucrats and government contractors very well by giving them big f at payche c k s for running a badly designed a nd bad ly ma naged Medicare system. Note: Woodrow Wilcox i s t he sen ior me d ic a l bi l l case worker at Sen ior Ca re Insu ra nce Services in Merrillville, India na. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dol la rs by f ig ht ing m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDIC A RE PROBLEM$ and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

the investment mix that fits your objectives and risk tolerance. Therefore, if your salary goes up this year, or if you think you can find other ways to free up some money, increase your contributions to your retirement plan. • Review your portfolio. Is your investment portfolio st i l l on t r ac k tow a rd helping you meet your long-term goals? If not, you may need to make s ome c h a n ge s . You’ l l also want to study your investment mix to make sure it st i l l accurately reflects your risk tolerance. • Avoid mistakes. None of us ca n avoid a l l mistakes, in life and in our investment activities. But as an investor, you’ll clea rly benef it f rom minimizing your errors. For example, it’s generally a mistake to jump out of the market in response to a period of volatility. If you wait for things to “calm down” before investing aga in, you might miss out on the opportunity to participate in the next market rally. • Think long term. Keep this in mind: You’re not i nvest i ng for today or tomorrow, but for many years from now. Tr y to keep a long-term focus when making all your key investment decisions. Tr y t o fol low t he s e f i na ncia l resolut ions as best as you can. You could make 2017 a year to remember.

Someone su m ma r i z ed 2016 a s “a slippery slope down a dark abyss.” Many have expressed hopelessness, shock, dismay and fear for their very lives under the incoming administration. But even in the darkest of times, there is light for those whose hope is anchored in the Lord. As we get ready to transition into the next year, I feel pressed to end this year with a thought from Isaiah that speaks of a “Great Light.” The prophet wrote: “In Galilee of the Gent i les, t he people who wa l ked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” This passage of scripture was fulfilled when Jesus began His ministry in Galilee. Not only did the people walk in outer darkness (dark society) they also dealt with personal darkness within. W he n Je s u s c a me on t he s c e ne preaching the Kingdom of God is at hand, the people who believed His message saw and heard the voice of God through Him. and followed. Another tax collector didn’t leave his table, but he changed the way he did business; he stopped cheating citizens. The hopeless received hope and those who were tormented were set free. The social outcasts were accepted in His presence and the sick were made well. His life was the Great Light that turned the hearts of the people back to the creator and they became the children of God. What about you and me? Jesus said we are the Light of the world! We have within us the power to turn the hearts of men and women, boys and girls to God. Don’t allow politics to snuff out your light, or let fear make you hide your identity to Christ. Remember Jesus has promised never to leave us nor forsake us. We are more than conquers through Him who loves us. Let’s demonstrate our love for Him by entering the New Year as lit candles, lighting our world for His glory and the salvation of humanity. These areas were once involved with the major steel mills that kept the whole area in jobs and business. Since the demise of the mills, in the 1970’s and 1980’s many suggestions as how to reclaim the properties have emerged, with some of the best coming from environmental groups such as these. The areas are important no only to those who live nearby but by those who frequent them via the Xways and local destinations. It will be interesting to see what 2017 will bring for these natural restorations!
