Property taxpayers in Calumet City met 2015 with a smile after the city council voted to pass a “Zero Increase” in the city’s operating levies for the new year. Calumet City Finance Director John Kasperek noted that “The City Council is well aware of the real estate tax burdens both residents and businesses have to endure in Cook County,” adding, “In these historic times of plunging values for homes and businesses, the raising of taxes in our opinion, would be adverse to our ever fragile economy here in Calumet City.” Property taxes may still increase for some residents and business owners if there is a change in the equalized assessed property value or rise in taxes levied by local school districts. The City of Calumet City has no jurisdiction over these entities. Calumet City will also be requesting Cook County not to extend a 3 percent loss in collection amount added to its operating levies. The county typically provides the loss in collection to supplant unpaid property taxes. The city’s bond and interest levies are going down by $300,827 or 5.96, Kasperek also noted. Additionally, a special service operating area which includes only River Oaks East and West shopping areas had it’s levy lowered from $400,000 to $300,000 last year, with the extra $100,000 being transferred to the city’s corporate fund. This was voted on for retention by the City Council as well. Bond refinancing may also be considered by the City Council in the near future. This would reduce the interest that the city pays, and further benefit Calumet City residents and homeowners.

American Legion Commanders Meet At Veterans Memorial Veterans Day activities last year were preceded by a special visit Nov. 5 for members of American Legion posts across the state. As part of his worldwide tour, National Commander Michael D. Helm met with Indiana post officials at the Edward P. Robinson Community Veterans Memorial. Newly elected Michael D. Helm of McCook, Nebraska, headed up the cong regat ion t hat i ncluded state, district and local post commanders. Helm was elected national commander of the 2.4 million member American Legion in August. Through his work at the national level, he helps to raise awareness of the issues that are most i mpor ta nt to vetera ns across t he country. Following a successful initial offering, CPCT is glad to once more offer an eight-week Improv Comedy class for adults beginning on January 19. The class delves deep into the craft of improv with more complex games as the weeks progress. All classes are taught by veteran improv actor Nelson Velazquez. Velasquez has been involved in improvisational theatre for the last 10 years. He is currently the Artistic Director of Salsation Theatre Company, a 15 year old Latino theatre company specializing in sketch and improv comedy. He also serves as head musical director for Los Improviachis, an improvised musical mariachi band. He has trained and performed at Second City, The Annoyance Theatre, and ComedySportz and has performed with various groups across the country such as Infinite Sundays - Second City’s musical improv house team; Wavelength, Inc. - a company who teaches educators to use improv in their classrooms; and is currently playing in ComedySportz’ brand new improvised hip-hop show RAPture. Velasquez is quick to state his belief that improv games are a valuable tool beyond the realm of the stage. “Some of the basic skills that improvisation teaches are to l isten a nd be aw a re of ot hers, to ach ieve cla r it y i n communication and to have the confidence to find choices instinctively,” said Velasquez. “These skills are useful not only for actors, but also in day-to-day life.” Velasquez believes in helping students learn how to think on their feet by freeing the mind, body and imagination through group exercises and games in a safe and supportive atmosphere. Students will learn the essential skills of shortform Improv through group exercises and basic improvised scenes and games. New skills are taught each week in a fun, safe environment. These skills include: Learning agreement and support in ensemble work, getting over stage-fright, being in the moment, and making big choices. At the end of the class, the students participate in a showcase performance for family and friends in our black box-style theatre. No previous Improvisation or Acting experience required.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My friend had a contract on her home. They went through negotiations and the buyer walked away. My friend came down to a price that she thought was fair. Did the buyer just not want the home very badly? Answer: Without seeing the contract, that’s a tough one to answer. Was the home priced correctly or was it too high for t he ma rket to beg in w it h? W hat condition was the home? What else was negotiated? When selling a home, you need to remember that not only do you want to get the best possible price for your home, you need to make the buyers feel like they have won on some issues that are important to them. No one likes a business deal that seems lopsided in the other persons favor. When negotiating, there are several areas where you can allow the other pa rt y to wa lk away w it h a w in. The most obvious is the agreed upon selling price. If there is a big price gap between you and the buyer, you can either meet their price or give a little on price or on a combination of price and concessions on some other items. DUANE MUHAMMAD Our youth will become tomorrow’s leaders, or a threat to society - or maybe somewhere in bet ween. Leav ing our youth to fend for themselves in today’s environment is like leaving them in a den of hungry angry animals. No child could survive or thrive in that type of environment. At that impressionable stage of life, they do not have the capacity to handle it. The child needs real love and assistance in order to make it through. This is a sensitive thing for us to talk about. There seems to be countless books and theories about how to raise up our youth as there are people on the earth. But if we get it wrong, we will regret it as our children reach adulthood. Some of us try to raise our youth the opposite of the way we were raised, while some of us try to raise them exactly as we were raised. Believe it or not there is a mindset that uses the technique of letting the child just grow on their own. The reality is, there is a better way. Children as they grow under our care are like a blank slate. When we teach the
youth we are showing them our example. How has that example been working for society? It seems that many of our youth are not listening to adults. In many cases they are not listening because many of us have shown the child the example of, “Do as I say, not as I do”. This has proven to be one of the worst examples because this is a different kind of generation. Our youth have grown up in the technological explosion of Smart phones, Skype, Social networking, just to name a few. They are not the same type of young folks like we were. They’re smarter and seem to grow up faster. What’s a solution? Listen to our youth. Really listen without being quick to pass judgment. You can’t win them over by buying them. Be the example that you want them to follow. Exemplif y love, patience, forgiveness, character, principle and more love. Yes, the foundation must be to show love, duty and responsibility. Another way God reveals His presence with us is through the fulfillment of scripture in our life. I began my faith walk with the Lord at age 13. Today, less than 4 months short of 60, I’ve never ceased to be amazed at His work in, through and around me. W hen I f a i le d t he 7t h g r a de I experienced His presence through the life of Daniel and his three friends, recorded in Daniel 1:17. He answered my prayer by giving me knowledge and understanding of my classes that enabled me to skip the 8th grade and enter 9th grade. As the 3rd of eleven children, I spent time in the pit with Joseph, learning you just can’t share your dreams with everybody (not even family members), while waiting for God to set the stage for His debut of me. I’ve been betrayed by Judas, chased by Saul, and found comfort in Jonathan. Through Judas I discovered God had a plan in the midst of betrayal. And from Saul I’ve learned to trust the promises of God no matter how bad things are. I’ve w a l ke d w it h A br a h a m a nd journeyed with his son Isaac. God’s throne. I fell on my face beside him as we both saw the wretchedness of ou r sou l i n c ompa r i son to H i s holiness. As the seraphim took the coal and touched Isaiah’s lips, purging him from sin; I understood the preciousness of the blood of Jesus that cleansed me of my sin, granting me access into the inner presence of God. When I think of His forgiveness of me, it’s not so hard to forgive those who have offended or mistreated me. I’ve walked in the shoes of the woman who pressed her way through the crowd and touched the hem of Jesus’ robe and was healed of her sickness. When cancer invaded my body I encountered the love of a Heavenly Father who walked with me through the fear of surgery, and recovery. When my husband abandoned me, His love remained steadfast. As the Apostle John said at the end of his account of the gospel, there is so much more I can say of my experience with the Lord that if I were to try to write it down it wouldn’t be enough room in this column or this newspaper for the next 60 years to contain it. Jack s on Brow n, Jr. Real estate is a business that seems like someone is a lways look ing. But there are times no one is looking, or they don’t have the experience to know what they’re seeing. I have seen people compromise because their character wasn’t a concern. Some decisions are easy (or at least they should be). T he sel ler wa nt s to c a l l t hat room i n t he basement w it h t he 1’ x 2’ window 6’ up the wall a “bedroom”. I know it’s done, but it shouldn’t be. BOCA, municipal codes, safety, etc. Yet I see many homes where this test has been failed and once I’ve seen this, I’ll question the character of t he listing agent a nd sellers. The deal may still happen, but it’s biased from the start. What if a seller knows of a problem that should be disclosed but doesn’t want to put it out there for fear it will scare off the buyers? S or r y, onc e I a s you r Realtor know it, I’m liable too. You as the seller need to correct the problem or at a minimum disclose it. I will do everything I can to make it still work if you do that. But if you’re going to hide it, pretend

Thornton Township Grants Christmas Wishes Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli believes that miracles still happen when there’s love in our hearts and that is exactly what occured during the Children’s Christmas Tree Gift distribution held on December 20th. The township distributed nearly 5,000 gifts to children from nearly 600 disadvantaged families. The bright smiles on the children’s faces as they received their gifts and took a picture with Santa told the whole story. Parents who are struggling are truly grateful for the Children’s Christmas Tree Gift Program. Jill Manning, the township’s director of special projects said township staff and 10-15 volunteers start wrapping gifts two weeks before the distribution and work from 9 am to 8 pm five days a week. Whatever gifts the township does not receive are purchased to ensure that every child receives gifts. Manning said no one in need is ever turned away. “We are truly appreciative of all the time and effort our volunteers give and for the generosity of the local businesses, community organizations, schools, and churches who donate the gifts. The program is a lot of work Manning said, “but the smiles on the children’s’ faces make it all worthwhile.” Trustee Joyce Washington said the township is proud to serve 17 communities in the south suburbs and they work hard to reach out to every one of them. The township is very fortunate to be able to provide a program like this and Supervisor Zuccarelli is committed to helping brighten their holiday Washington said. Claudia Nance and her husband John from Sout h Holland came to the event for the first time with two of their children, ages 15 and 8. Nance, a disabled American veteran who served in the Army Reserve said she and her family are struggling so it means so much to receive gifts for the children. Donesha Washington of Dolton agreed. Because of a heart condition she is unable to work and would not have been able to provide gifts for her four daughters. “We are very appreciative of the generosity of Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli, the township and everyone who donates gifts. “Now it will be a Merry Christmas,” she said. The township has volunteers of all ages helping out the Children’s Christmas Tree Gift Program. The youngest, Casatidy Amayao of Dolton age 9 has been helping out at township events for the past two years. “I love being able to help people and see the smiles on their faces,” she said. Township Clerk Jacqueline Rivera said she is so proud to have someone so young realize the importance of giving back. “If you start them out young they’ll never depart,” she said. Due to illness Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli was unable to attend the gift distribution. Township officials said this is one of the most rewarding programs for Supervisor Zuccarelli because it brings happiness to so many children who might not otherwise have gifts to open.

Get What You Need RENEE N. HALE, DSL Have a successf u l 2015, starting with three sheets of paper, a pen, and an hour. Plan for your business, organization— even your home life—with a nt ic ipat ion a nd t r ue probabilit y for success. Here’s a simple, three step approach to this process. First, take a sheet of paper a nd w r ite dow n what you’d l i ke to see happen each qua r ter of t he year. This paper could be tit led “Goa ls” or “Results”. A bulleted list is fine; just keep it in four areas on the paper in order to see the year in sections. When thinking of resu lts, consider persona l, f ina ncia l, work-related, and othersrelated parts of your life. Now jot down the results you’d like to see for each of these components in each quarter. You’ll see the progression from “where you are” to “where you want to be” personally, financially, in your work, and with others. Example: in t he f irst qua r ter area, one may jot “lower cholesterol” as a personal result. Next, div ide another sheet into four areas. What is needed in order to have your results in the first quarter? Second, etc.? This could be titled “Needs”. Jot dow n t he se ne e d s i n t he c or r e s p ond i n g q u a r t e r. Mrs. Studzinski was born January 16, 1926 and died December 31, 2014. She was the wife of the late Eustace M. “Al” Studzinski. Mother of William (Alice) Studzinski, Nancy Mikos, Kathleen (Gregory) Condon and Joseph (Cheryl) Studzinski. Grandmother of 10 and greatgrandmother of 12. Interment was private. Arrangements were by Thornridge Funeral Home (Janusz Family Funeral Service).

The Billing Service Goofed
WOODROW WILCOX On October 21, 2014, I wrote a letter for a client to get a medical bill paid. The client is from Crown Point, Indiana. The medica l bi l l was for $972 for services rendered on September 5, 2014. When I phoned t he cl ient ’s i n su r a nc e company, it reported that it never received such a claim from Medicare. So, I wrote a letter asking the billing firm to send the e s s e nt i a l i n f or m a t ion about the claim directly to our client’s insurance company. My letter was sent to the addresses given to me from the bill and when I phoned to confirm a not her address of t he billing party. But, the billing service ignored the letter and sent a dema nd for pay ment letter to our client. The c l ient for w a r de d t h at bill to me and I worked to resolve t he issue on January 2, 2015. Again, I made phone calls to find t he bi l ling ma nager in charge of the bill so that I could fax a copy of my prev ious letter a nd get some cooperation. In this round of phone calls, I learned that the new medical billing firm took over on September 1, 2014 – just four days before our client got the medical service. When I phoned the new firm this time, it had changed its phone number, its fax number, and its mailing address about the time that I sent the first letter. I got the new billing ser v ice to admit that it had fa i led to send t he cla im to Medica re a nd t hat had caused t he
pay ment problem w it h our client’s medical bill. The lack of payment was not the fault of our client, her insurance company, Medicare, or our insurance agency. It was the fault of the medical billing firm. “Please, tell your client t hat she ca n disrega rd that bill. For some reason, we didn’t send the claim to Med ica re u nt i l just r e c e n t l y,” t h e p h o n e representative told me. “Your firm sent a final notice payment demand letter to our client and upset her. You sent that after I had already mailed a letter to your previous addresses which told you what to do to get paid. I think that you owe our client a written apolog y and notice to disregard the final notice bill,” I told the representative. She agreed. She promised that our client would get such a letter. Once t he bill is processed by Medica re and the client’s insurance company, I expect t hat our client will owe little or none of the $972 bill. All the help that I gave to this client was FREE OF CH A RGE. The ow ners, managers, and staff of this insurance agency really do care about our senior citizen clients. We “go the extra mile” to protect them from financial harm w hen some one i n t he Medicare system makes a mistake that could cost our clients some money. Does you r i nsu ra nce agency give this high level of ser v ice to its senior citizen clients? If not, why not?

He was born in Sicily and as was the custom then (and probably still is to this day) when a baby was born in a village there, the date of birth was usually when the father got around to registering the baby at the local magistrate. N 2 N and hubby happened to be at Pucci’s for a festive New Year’s dinner ( a yummy pasta plate and prime rib) as only they can do it. the place was packed with end of the year revelers and it was great fun to see some of the of locals (and those coming from a distance) having a good time! LANSING COUNTRY CLUB--IS IT OR ISN’T IT FOR SALE? For 2 days running last week a local paper had the venerable 70 year plus country 18 hole club ( it will celebrate it’s 75th anniversary in 2016) which 176 acres lie partly in Illinois (40%) and in Indiana (60%) was front page fodder. On Wednesday the paper had it headlined as “going up for sale” and on Thursday a headline that seeks to “boost membership.” So which is it? A little of both I suspect since declining membership is a problem for many organizations these days. And, the Lansing Country Club, formerly the Lansing Sportsmen’s Club in the 1940’s, is not inexpensive to join and belong to. Membership stands at about 165 right now and the plan is (50 in 15) new members that is. We can join for $500 down and $100 a month with some new plans for corporate clients in the mix. The Lansing Country Club is a mecca for area golfers and many a foursome has played there for years. It would be a shame to see this go to another entity, so if you are thinking of polishing up that set of clubs and want to get a little exercise, try the Lansing Country Club.
