Performing artist, Amanda Vernon, will offer a free concert on Tuesday, Januar y 14, 2014 at 7pm at Seton Academy. Amanda is a recording artist from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Through a genre she calls, “soulful pop” this singer, pianist and composer speaks to authentic beauty through music, the language of the soul. At age 26, Amanda has over a decade of experience in both studio recording and live performance. She has performed her original music across the United State and in six foreign countries including the 2008 and 2011 World Youth Days in Sydney, Australia and Madrid, Spain. Amanda was a feature of the Youth Track of the 2006 Archbishop James Lyke Conference in Chicago. Question: What penalties do motorists face if they violate the new state law that bans the use of cellphones while driving? Answer: Beginning on January 1, 2014, Illinois motorists may not use handheld cellphones for any purpose, including making or receiving phone calls or texting. If police see a driver pressing a phone to his or her ear, they can issue a ticket. Fines range from $75 for a first-time offense to $150 for each offense after the third violation. Drivers can make calls in case of emergency or if they are stopped in traffic and the vehicle is in park or neutral. Question: If a credit/debit card thief makes a purchase using the card, is the cardholder liable? Answer: Federal law limits a consumer’s liability in credit card fraud to a maximum of $50. The ceiling for debit card fraud is $500. If someone makes unauthorized transactions with your debit card number, but your card is not lost, you are not liable for those transactions if you report them within 60 days of your statement being sent to you. Question: How can I obtain a permit to carry a concealed weapon? Answer: On January 1, 2014, a new Illinois law went into effect requiring those who want to carry a concealed firearm to obtain an Illinois Concealed Carry License which is issued by the Illinois State Police. In general, Illinois residents who want to apply for the permit must be 21, have a valid Firearms Owner Identification (FOID) card, and have completed required concealed carry firearms training and registered their fingerprints. Housing lost a ton of value a nd ma ny fa mi lies lost homes and equity unlike any time in history. However, this is a new year and with a new year comes new opportunit y and possibility. The real estate markets have been trying to recover for the last year and the question o n e v e r y b o d y ’s m i n d is w het her t he ma rket will make a full recovery t his year. The odds are stacked in the favor of a recover y because prices have stopped d ropping a nd ne w home ow ner s are starting to enter the m a r ket . I nt er e s t r at e s a r e b e g i n n i n g to r i s e but that just means the government is tr ying to ta ke t hei r foot of f t he interest rate a nd see if the market can begin to support itself. W h i le t he out look may be ros y t here a re also a few reasons to be concer ned on w het her the market is recovering or if we are in a “bubble”. T he nat iona l ma rket may be trying to claim a recover y but la st yea r much of the market was pushed up by institutional buyers purchasing che ap proper t ie s. T he cheap proper t ies a re quietly disappearing and some large buyers have

even pu l led out of t he rea l est ate pu rcha si ng bu s i ne s s . T he bi g ge s t thing that can affect this recovery is the new laws affecting mortgages. The government placed new rules in getting a mortgage and only time will tell if these rules will hurt the recovery. In all of this, the best thing to remember is that no matter what happens in t he ma rket, ma ke good decisions when purchasing a house. Don’t over extend yourself in a purchase. Don’t let a lender tell you how much you can a f ford. Ma ke your ow n budget and tell a lender what you are comfortable paying. Buy under what you are approved for if at all possible. He was my English teacher when I was a freshman in high school. He helped me to understand English so that I got through school a nd cou ld use Eng l ish properly for t he rest of my life. He could lecture on English without even referring to a textbook. He made a big difference i n m y l i f e,” t he m a n responded. I have heard similar c om ment s f rom ma ny ot her people who were t he students of my grandfather. Until 1959, Hig h la nd had no h ig h school a nd st udents from Highland went to school in Grif f it h. My g r a nd f at her t aug ht at Griffith for 26 years. He was a teacher at schools in southern Indiana before that. Often, I heard him tell me how he decided to ded icate h is l i fe to teaching proper English to young people so that their lives would be improved and doors of opportunity would open to them. My materna l grandfather had lifetime teach ing licenses f rom Indiana in eight subjects. He taught English, drama, jour na lism, speech, and debate. He coached

basketball and baseball tea m s. He wou ld not coach footba ll because he believed t hat it was too dangerous a sport for teenage boys. One of his high school girl basketball tea m members made history by scoring over a hundred points by herself in each of two games in the season. He stopped c o a c h i n g h ig h s c ho ol baseball after one of his students was hit on the head by a baseball and died in my grandfather’s arms. My grandfather directed the high school plays at Griffith for years. He founded the Griffith High School newspaper – THE PANTHER PRESS. When I had difficulty w ith English as a freshman in high school, my grandfather tutored me in English, journalism, debate, dra ma, a nd speech. W hen I was young, he taught me how to fight and how to shoot. He was a veteran of World War One. He used what he had to affect positive change i n t he l i v e s of y ou ng people whom he taught. W hat many people here ne ver k ne w a bout my g ra nd fat her is t hat he was part Native American I n d i a n . I n s ou t h e r n I nd i a n a , s ome pe ople discriminated against him for that reason. So, when he had the chance to move north where no one knew him or his background, he took the chance and came to Griffith, Indiana. He made his mark on all his students. Just ask any of them.

Un for t u nately as we brought in the New Year with high hopes for its promise…I somehow contracted a virus which ha s k nocked me out for t he last t h ree days r u n n i ng. Wr it i ng t h i s is my first and greatest accomplishment of 2014. As New Year’s celebrations ran into the night, I spent t w el v e hou r s he av i n g ever y thing I had in me into t he toi let, on ly to wake up freezing on the washroom f loor and dry heave any remnants. Si nce t hen I have not be en able to st ay awake more than fifteen minutes at a time. I have yet to have my first solid meal of 2014. I spend my waking hours shivering, s weat i ng , ach i ng , a nd hack i ng up some ver y interesting colors. When I call off work, they don’t e v en k now w ho I a m because I don’t sound like myself. Well intentioned f a m i l y mem b er s k e ep trying to bring me soup and medication, or offer to take me to the doctor. I have imposed a selfqua ra nt ine. I ref use to let the virus win. It will die in this house. It ends w it h me. A s long a s I can continue to get my f luids in and drink my

l iq u id nut r it ion me a l replacements, I will be the victor in this epic battle between good and evil. As I lie in bed suffering I keep thinking, 2014 can only get better from here. It could be worse…I could h av e c ho s en to br i ng i n t he New Yea r away from home and got sick somewhere else. Cou ld you imagine if I would have pulled over to throw up, and the police thought I was drunk? I could have awakened in jail with the f lu. I have a temporar y illness, not something that is going to linger on. I may be miserable now, but I will prevail. There w i l l a lways be bumps in t he road. Successf u l people pick t hemselves up more focused t ha n ever a nd cont i nue f ig ht i ng to accomplish their goa ls. I recent ly watched t he mov ie “Jobs”— about Steve Jobs and focusing mainly on the early days of founding Apple Computer. Steve had many setbacks but refused to be waylaid, he fought t irelessly for what he bel ieved i n, eventua lly creating t he colossu s w h ich i s one of t he w orld’s l a r ge st corporations. They t h i n k one a gent i s a s good as another, so if one doesn’t “perform” then we just move onto the next. Commoditization of the work force seems to be the order of the day – so it is somewhat natural that buyers and sellers would treat real estate agents the same way. FOUR GIRLS LIKE FIVE GUYS: The Minton girls, Alex and Christina, 17, Julie Anna, 15 and Jennifer 8 along with Daddy, Spencer, 44, took in Five Guys Restaurant in Schererville, Indiana on New Year’s Day. Jennifer is proudly showing offer her new American Girl doll that Santa delivered a bit belatedly--but New Year’s is just as good as any day for a Christmas present. The girls chose Five Guys as one of their favorites because of the great hamburgers flipped there and the tall cups of fries, salty and steaming hot just ready to be dipped in ketchup! The twins are graduating from High School this June and plan on careers as veterinarians. Glamorous Julie has not decided just what she wants to be as yet, and Jennifer just wants to be famous! Jen has recently joined the Brownie Scouts and will soon be knocking on our doors selling Girl scout cookies! These are my darlings and as we go forward into 2014, I wish them health and happiness and their heart’s desires. Don’t we all as grandparents want this for our

In addition to the splendid entertainment at Fr. Steve’s party, there was a buffet and party favors. In all some 80 persons attended and had so much fun all vowed to return for the 2014-15 New Year’s Eve bash. Here is something worth noting about Fr. Steve’s NYE party--many of the guests were in their 70’s, 80’s and greater who had stage and dance experience and who put on a fabulous impromptu New York City Rockettes dance routine, complete with high kicks!
