Auditions for Alice @ Wonderland Auditions are January 28 at 10am. If you interested in auditioning or have any questions, please email jcasey@ towlet heater.org or ca ll t he t heater at 219-937-8780. Auditions are open to anyone and everyone ages 12-18 grades 6-12 from Indiana or Illinois, public, private or home schooled. All are welcomed. Auditions will take place at the Towle Theater; 5205 Hohman Avenue, Hammond IN. If you’d like to audition, please prepare a 1 minute monologue that provides you the opportunity to show a very interesting character choice - maybe with a different voice?. You will also be asked to read from the script. Keep in mind, auditioning is similar to interviewing for a job. Please dress nicely, arrive well rested and 15 minutes prior to the audition time. Alice @ Wonderland is a contemporary adaptation of the classic Alice in Wonderland. Alice is a contemporary young girl which makes her encounters with all the residents of Wonderland even more interesting and mysterious. The casting is VERY flexible with opportunities for some actors to play multiple roles. This is a great show to get involved with even if you only have limited availability. They are looking to incorporate a lot of movement and interesting staging into this production. Students from all over NW Indiana and Southern suburbs of Chicago are strongly encouraged to audition. Those who audition and don’t make the cast or anyone interested in off-stage/back-stage involvement will work on small committees for the show including box office, tech and PR/ marketing. Since 2010, the Towle Youth Theater Ensemble, or TYTE, has been wowing NWI audiences with productions such as the Northwest Indiana Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s 13, Anne of Green Gables, Laughing Stock & Clue the Musical and the World Premiere of Mental by Towle Youth Theater Ensemble Member, Isabel Zuniga. The Towle Theater is located in beautiful downtown Hammond at 5205 Hohman Avenue. Parking is available just off Fayette Street only steps away from our alley entrance at the back of the theater. For more information, please call 219-937-8780 or visit www.towletheater.org.

Pension Tsunami ARLO KALLEMEYN Don’t hold your breath for true pension reform any time soon. The rules t hat t he gover n ment ma ke for u s does not apply to them. There are all kinds of government rules to make sure private cit i zens l i ke you r a nd I pay ou r obl igat ions. Just try not paying your rea l estate ta xes – t he government will quickly sell your house at auction a nd s e nd t h e s h e r i f f to put your couch a nd coffee table out on the curb. Just try telling the local grocer y store that you are a little short right now and won’t be paying t he sa les t a x on you r week ly g rocer ies. Just try telling your employer that it’s the holidays and not to send Il linois or Indiana your portion of the income tax that you pay the government from ever y single pay check you re c ei ve. S e e how that works for you. But when it comes to Illinois and Indiana politicians send i ng i n t he money that they are obligated to pay into pension funds for teachers, police and firemen, they have said no thanks – just because t he y m ade t he r u le s, doesn’t mean they have to follow the rules. It’s called unfunded pension obl igat ions, a nd t he picture is not pretty. For decades, governors and law m a ker s f rom bot h pol it ic a l pa r t ie s have chosen to spend available revenues on education, hea lt h ca re a nd ot her current programs rather than sock enough away to pay for t he pension benef it s workers were earning. The longer they wait, the bigger the hole. One good rule I’ve heard is that when you’re in a hole - stop digging. That doesn’t apply to debt like
this. This hole digs itself – we could all throw down ou r s hov el s a nd stop digging, but it wouldn’t help. Illinois’ pension fund is just 6 yea rs away from insolvency and is u nder f u nde d b y $130 Billion. This leaves a $14 billion a year hole Illinois taxpayers must pay up to meet pension obligations - a n a mou nt equa l to one-third of the state’s r e v e nue s . To d a y t h a t means that every Illinois citizen is on the hook for over $ 8,500.00. Let me k now how you wou ld enjoy writing that check. Behind Illinois in second pl ac e i s C on ne c t ic ut , followed by Indiana in a close third. In just 9 years-2019--Indiana’s pension fund is expected to dry up, leaving a $3.6 billion hole that will have to be filled every year to meet pension obl igat ions. That’s 17% of the state’s revenues. Here is a solution. The f i ne people of I l l i nois and Indiana are on the hook to write the checks to cover ever y pension promise made in the past, present and future. But it’s only fair that whoever pa y s i nto t he s y s t em should benefit from the system – just like Social Sec u r it y. Ever y si ng le cit i zen who pay s i nto the system with our hard ea r ned dol la rs shou ld also be eligible for a state pension. We ca n t hen all retire early, rich and happy. The only downside is that our children and g ra ndch i ld ren w i l l be stuck with the bill, unless they can somehow figure out that the rules don’t apply to them – just like our government. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of pension reform.

Beauty Tames The Beast At South Suburban College The Children’s Theatre Company of South Suburban College is celebrating its 30-year anniversary with Michele L. Vacca’s enchanting and warmly amusing dramatization of the beloved tale Beauty and the Beast. Performances will take place on Saturdays, January 14 and 21, 2017 at 11:00am and 2:00pm. Florabunda, the Enchantress (Sandy Wagner of Lansing), begins the play by gathering a troupe of players about her, and assigning them roles. Belinda, the heroine (Catherine Hundt of Thornton), is a young woman of strong opinions, education and talent. Belinda’s father Henry Beaumont (Pat Nevins of Homewood), is the prosperous merchant. In an ef fort to gain money for festiva ls and a new swimming pond, arrogant Prince Philip (Rykeil Knights of Riverdale) seizes all of Beaumonts’ property and they are forced to declare bankruptcy. To teach him a lesson, Florabunda works her magic and turns Philip into a hideous Beast until he learns to love and be loved in return. One day, Henry mistakenly wanders into the garden of the legendary Beast (Eric Atkinson of Chicago). The angry Beast reluctantly promises to spare Henry’s life, but only if Belinda agrees to live in his castle. Despite Henr y’s objections, Belinda insists upon doing as the Beast requests.
With the help of his servants (Juniper DeYoung of Thornton, Angela Martin of Midlothian and Heather Young of Chicago), Belinda begins to draw the cold-hearted Beast out of his isolation. Gradually, they become friends and inseparable companions. Lansing resident Ellie Shunko is the director and producer. “We created the Children’s Theatre Company in 1986 to fill a need for affordable, live theatre for young audiences,” she said. “We perform for local grammar school and child
care groups during school hours and for the general public on weekends. Our school performances are completely sold out.” Even after thirty years, Shunko has no plans of slowing down. “We are providing a valuable service for our community here at SSC,” she says. “And I still love watching the kids watch the shows.” Adding their talents to the production lighting are designer Jon Jenkins from Chicago, costume designer Joanna Tassin from Park Forest, set designer Dean Scalzitti from Chicago and choreographer Ly nzi Scholz from South Chicago Heights. June Wagner, from Lansing, is the stage manager. South Suburban College is located at 15800 State Street in South Holland, Illinois, between Sibley Boulevard and 159th Street. The campus is convenient to Routes 94, 80, 57, and 294 and is also accessible by PACE. Free, ample, well-lit parking is available. Reservations are suggested. Tickets for Beauty and the Beast are $5 per person. For more information or to reserve tickets, call the 24/7 box office voicemail line at (708) 210-5741. Leave your name and phone number and someone will return your call. You may also reserve tickets by e-mail at boxoffice@ssc.edu.

Real Estate Questions & Answers
Answer: Real estate transactions are held together by written agreements accepted by both buyers and sellers. The act of acceptance suggests that each side is getting something from the deal, so all agreements can be seen as “win/win” arrangements. W hen I hear that someone wants a “w in/w in” agreement for rea l estate investing and no money down I instantly w onder w hy t he a g r e ement s u s e d generally by local real estate brokers are somehow insufficient for this purpose -and why some investment gurus suggest avoiding real estate brokers altogether. Perhaps it’s the definition of “win/win” that’s confusing -- some people see “win/ win” as a code expression which really means one of the parties is accepting terms which are hugely unfavorable. As to “no money down” transactions,
the VA loan program has offered such financing for five decades. No “win/win” contracts are needed by qualified buyers to obtain such financing. These days, nonVA, zero-down-payment mortgages are pretty much impossible for borrowers to get. Given t hat rea l estate ag reements routinely have localized requirements, the best approach is to speak with a local broker or attorney to obtain specific forms. Since you w rote for adv ice, let me give you a little bit more. If you want a real “win/win” real estate investment business, then be sure to use a real estate broker and attorney for all your real estate transactions. Lansing Christian School To Celebrate 110 Years
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I am getting into the real estate investing business. I am in the process of buying/selling real estate for little or no money down. Since contracts are already prewritten and are fill in the blanks, I see no need to go with a real estate broker. Do you have information on writing a “win/ win” contract for real estate investing?

When You Retire, Where Can You Find Investment Income?
BOB KRYGSHELD A s a n i nvestor, you r main goals will change at different times in your life. During your working years, you need to grow a s ma ny resou rces a s possible for retirement. Once you retire, however, you w ill likely need to focus more on gett ing income from your investments. But what are your options? T here’s no shor t a ge o f i n c o m e -p r o d u c i n g investments, of course. You might immediately think of bonds, which can provide regular interest payments and probable preservation of principal, provided the bonds are considered “investment grade.” Still, if interest rates are low when you retire – as they have been for several years now – bonds might not provide you with as much income as you need. And just as importantly, the income you receive from most bonds won’t rise over time, leaving you susceptible to inf lation and the loss of purchasing power. C o n s e q u e n t l y, y o u may also need to explore other ty pes of incomegenerat ing vehicles, including dividend-paying stock s a nd rea l estate investment trusts (REITs). S o m e s t o c k s h a v e not only paid but a lso increased their dividends for ma ny con sec ut ive years. These stocks have historically provided the potential for rising income to help combat inf lation and are typically well-run companies that strive to reward their investors. Nonetheless, you need to recognize that even these stocks are not obligated to pay you dividends, and they are free to lower or discontinue them at any time without notice. Now, let ’s t u r n to a second type of potential income-producing asset: Rea l estate investment trusts (REITs). Different types of REITs are available. For example, equit y REITs invest in
a nd ow n c om mer c i a l properties, such as hotels a nd shoppi ng centers, while mor tgage REITs, as t he na me suggests, ow n a nd invest in propert y mortgages. Is one form of REIT better than another? There’s no simple answer. On the one hand, mortgage REITs are considered riskier than equity REITs. However, mor tgage R EI Ts of ten pay quite large dividends, although the payout can be i nconsistent. ( L i ke a l l R E I Ts , m o r t g a g e REITs must pay 90% of their taxable income to investors in the form of div idends. Due to t his r e q u i r e m e n t , R E I Ts generally need to raise capital to finance their grow th plans, and this necessity can affect their share prices.) O t he r f a c t or s , s uc h a s c h a n g i n g i nt e r e s t r at e s, w i l l a f fe c t t he va lue of mortgage and equity REITs differently. Specifically, rising interest rates w i l l l i kely cause the market value of the proper t y mor tgages inside mor tgage REITs to fa ll, whereas equit y REITs, which own actual buildings, might actually benef it i f t he Federa l Reser ve ra ises interest rates, as such a move would indicate a strong economy, more jobs and greater demand for office space. In the short term, though, even equity REITs can react negatively to an interest-rate increase. But over the long term, this movement can be offset by the benefits of earnings a nd d i v idend g r ow t h d r iven by a g row i ng economy. Clearly, t here’s much to t h i n k a b out w hen c on sider i ng p otent i a l income-producing options such as bonds, dividendpaying stocks and REITs. (Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

Homebuying… To “NOT DO” List MIKE BUDER It is important for you, as a homebuyer, to know that the documentation u s e d to suppor t you r loa n approv a l c a n be re-verified by your lender even up to t he day of closing. You may be asked for updated pay stubs and ba n k statements. Most lenders w i l l verif y you are still employed within a day of closi ng you r loan. Credit updates are also generally re-pulled just prior to your closing date. A s some loa n approval requirements get tougher, it is important to remember t hese lender re-che ck s. Not h i ng i s worse t han going from an approval to a denial on ly day s before you r loa n closes because of something you could have waited to do and it does happen! So w it h t hat in mind here are some DO NOTS. DO NOT ma ke ba n k deposit s ot her t ha n reg u la r pay income de p o s it s i n t he b a n k accounts you are using to qualify for your purchase. If you need to deposit a ny t h i ng u nu su a l, be su re to d iscuss w it h y ou r loa n of f ic er t he documentation that may be needed. DO NOT bring account balances below the amount used for the loan approval. Your bank accounts will be checked aga in pr ior to closing. The lender may require seeing t he most recent statement. G enera l ly t he lender w i l l a sk to verif y that your earnest money a nd appra isa l/ credit report charges have cleared your account. DO
NOT have returned checks or overdraft protection. The lender considers your f i na ncia l ma nagement ability as part of the loan approval. Even if you have overdraft protection, take special care to avoid going negative. DO NOT incur a dd it ion a l debt . T h i s is probably t he biggest closing killer. A new car, some new furniture for you r new home, etc… a lso ment ion a ny debt that has not shown up on your credit report when you apply. DO NOT open new accounts. Any new account, even if you might not charge anything to it, should wait. The inquiry or the new account itself might impact your credit score. So in summary, if you are in application for a home mor t g a ge…. a n y changes to your finances – income, employment, bank account deposits, ne w c re d it, e ven ne w credit inquiries – should be discussed w ith your loan officer before they take place. the crystal river that John saw and wrote about. I then act as if I’m there! I begin jumping and splashing in the crystal river and worshiping God until the issues that brought me there are no longer weighing me down. With a refreshed spirit and a renewed mind, I can work through whatever difficulties I’m facing with faith, hope and victory. Some, reading this article, are probably laughing as did a few parishioners when I demonstrated this form of meditation from the pulpit. But I challenge you, the next time you find yourself backed into a wall of despair, close your eyes and with child-like faith imagine yourself splashing in the crystal river. Take a leaf from the tree of life and rub it over your face and begin worshiping the Lord. In His presence you will find the peace and tenacity to move forward in this life with victory. GOD WITH US
The scene outside my bedroom window reminds me of the glorious future God has for those who love Him. There are two trees parallel to each other. Between the two trees is a paved walkway that leads outside the apartment complex I live in. Each day that I go to my mailbox I take the path that runs between the two trees (tenant mailboxes are outside of each building). And with each return trip from the mailbox as I walk between the two trees I see a glimpse of what the Apostle John wrote about in Revelation 22:1-4. The paved walkway transforms into the crystal river that flows from the throne of God and the trees, with their overflowing branches, becomes the tree of life covered with lush green leaves for the healing of the nations. In that day, there will be no need for sunlight or lamps because darkness (physical and spiritual) will no longer exist because of the visible reigning presence of the Lord. There are days when the condition of the world becomes overbearing and I feel like I can’t take another day. I close my eyes and envision myself splashing in

Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ moment. It was quiet, pa rk li ke. I snapped several photos of the deer as they moved about the lawn before they saw me and scampered off – but that bit of natural elegance in so serious and severe a setting, gave me hope for 2017. I would love to see gentleness and civility prevail in the New Year! ***

MOTHER OF GOD CHURCH IN ‘OLD’ BU R N H A M L OV I NGLY DR E S SE D BY PARISH MEMBERS: The Nativity scene under the altar, the many trees that adorn the sacred place housing the Eucharist, the ceramic and gold handle holders – these are all created and donated by longtime parishioners. The small ‘country’ church located at 14148 Green Bay Avenue has a small but loyal group of members who attend Mass every Sunday and many times during the week. They attend Bible study and host fundraisers to help offset expenses. They saw other pictures of churches in N 2 N recently and wanted to share their own beautiful church with the rest of us. I am so happy to do so this week. Some of the dedicated and devoted parishioners who contributed to the Christmas tableau include Eddie and Shirley Brach (who did most of it), Mike and Mary Jane Bednarz, George and Rosemary Petrich, Wally and Jeanette Podlin, among many others. If I missed anyone please let me know and I will include you in an upcoming N 2 N! ***
