Howe ver, most t h i ng s sh r i n k w hen f roz en – just look at a cold person who w raps up in a big sweater and huddles on t he couch. Conser v i ng body heat means getting as small as possible. So why does water expand a nd not s h r i n k w he n it get s cold enoug h to freeze? The answer lies i n t he l it t le hyd rogen atom. A water molecule is made up of one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms. W hen water is a liquid, t hese molecu les m i x around very closely to one another. Each molecule is attracted to other by forces ca lled hydrogen bonds. T hese bond s keep t he molecules close together but not per ma nent ly f i xed i n one place. A s one molecule moves past another it will break old hydrogen bonds and form new ones, with different water molecules. A s water cools, t he molec u les slow dow n, and get closer together. At about 39 deg rees Fa hrenheit, water molecules are as closely packed as they can get.

W hen water cont i nues to cool, t he ind iv idua l molecules start to arrange themselves into a more stable form. At 32 degrees Fahrenheit water will form the stable solid we call ice. Ice, like most other pure solids, has a cr ystalline structure. This means that the atoms are organized i n a si mple repe at i ng st r uct u re, l i ke a cube. The crystalline structure of i c e i s a r e p e a t i n g a r r a n g e m e nt of e i g ht molecules of water. This arrangement is actually less dense t ha n l iqu id water at 39 degrees! Ice has less molecules in the sa me a mou nt of space compared to liquid water. This is a very unique property of water, as most chem ica ls have sol id forms that are denser than their liquid forms. This arrangement of hydrogen and oxygen atoms in water is why ice f loats. If lakes and rivers froze from the bottom up, it would mean that fish and other wildlife cou ld not su r v ive cold winters – and the spring fishermen would have to make up even bigger fish stories. Hammond Historical Society “Hoosiers & Their Hooch” Exhibit The Hammond Historical Society will host Hoosiers & Their Hooch: Perspectives on Prohibit ion, t he India na Histor ica l Societ y’s newest traveling ex hibit. The exhibit will be on display at the Hammond Public Library, 564 State St., during library hours from Jan. 7 through Jan. 30. Visitors will be taken through the rise and fall of prohibition in Indiana and throughout the country. The exhibit spans the dawn of the temperance movement of the 1900s, the roaring 1920s and the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment during the Great Depression. The sights, sounds, and experiences of the time are brought to life by images and graphics from the Indiana Historical Society’s collections. The era’s conf licting cultures are demonstrated through colorful historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker

of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana. The end of the ex hibit gives v isitors an update on what has occurred between 1993 and the present day, demonstrating t h e e f f e c t s P r oh i bi t i on h a s h a d on Indiana’s regulatory landscape, and how it is represented in today’s modern culture. My personal devotions last week led me to the book of Nehemiah. To those who maybe unfamiliar with this section of t he Bible, Nehem ia h records t he rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem by the Jews who survived the captivity. The book begins with Nehemiah’s grief for the condition of his people and the ruins of his community. After praying a prayer of repentance to God for the sins of himself and his people, he requests permission from King Artaxerxes to return to Judah to lead in the work of rebuilding the wall. When the work was completed a revival took place and the people reaffirm their commitment to God, and to each other. Each time I’ve heard t he Book of Nehemia h preached, it was used to initiate raising money to build huge multifunctional, state of the art churches for the glor y of God. But, God is not impressed with our brick and mortar churches built in His honor. The camps will feature sessions for pitching, catching, hitting and fielding while providing adults and children the opportunity to improve their knowledge of baseball skills and techniques. Retirees Need a “Longevity Strategy” BOB KRYGSHELD The late, g reat Yog i Berra supposedly said it: “The future ain’t what it used to be.” And the same could be said of retirement. Due to several factors, such as advances in health care, today’s retirees are living longer, more active lives than their predecessors. In fact, you could spend two, or even three, decades in retirement – which means you need a “longev it y strategy.” Such a strategy needs to be part of your overall retirement income strategy, but here are five key areas you’ll need to address: • Lifestyle – What do you plan to do during your retirement years? Travel the world? Stay close to home a nd pursue your h o b b i e s ? Vo l u n t e e r ? Open a sma ll business or do some consulting? Your choice of lifest yle will probably affect every aspect of your longevity strategy. • Income – Your biggest t h reat to a n enjoyable retirement is the possibi l it y of r u n n i ng out of money. This fear is apparently widespread; in a survey commissioned by Allianz, a life insurance c o m p a n y, m o r e t h a n 60% of respondents said they were more scared of outliving their assets than they were of dying. You need to create a retirement i n c om e s t r a t e g y t h a t incorporates, among other elements, a w ithdrawal rate that allows you to take money from your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts in such a manner that you don’t run out. A f i n a nc i a l professional can suggest ways of meet ing t hese long-term care costs. • Caregiving – It’s possible, at lea st ea rly i n you r retirement years, that you could still be a caregiver to aging parents. If so, you might need to factor i n t hese costs to you r financial strategy. Later on, you may need some caregiving yourself, such as that provided by a home health aide. REV. CAROLYN McKINSTRY Guest Speaker

Rev. Carolyn Maull McKinstry, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, was present on September 15, 1963, at the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. She was the young girl who took the threatening phone call, warning of the bomb that would moments later kill her four friends. Also, Rev. McKinstry was among thousands of students hosed by fireman during the 1963 marches, and she survived a second bomb explosion that destroyed a portion of her home in 1964. She believes that God spared her life on September 15, 1963, so that she could continue to live in service to others. Rev. McKinstry authored a book, “While the World Watched,” detailing her life growing up in Birmingham and “lessons learned” from her experiences and involvement in the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement.
