The Lake County Public Library, 1919 W. 81st Avenue, will showcase the photography and history of local photographer John A. Bushemi of Gary. Known as a good-natured, talented photographer, he covered several of the island invasions during World War II in the Pacific. This traveling exhibit features reproductions of Bushemi’s photographs. Bushemi died Feb. 19, 1944, when shrapnel from Japanese knee-mortar shells hit and mortally wounded him. Images of both his battleship funeral service and his funeral service back home in Gary are included in the exhibit. Among the magazine covers and personal photographs from Bushemi’s assignment to YANK, the weekly magazine written by and for enlisted men, are images of soldiers training at Fort Bragg, soldiers on the beach of Entiwok Island in the Marshalls awaiting the order to attack, and close-up portraits of soldiers who were featured in an article about the battle for New Georgia. The exhibit is on loan from the Indiana Historical Society and available for viewing during library open hours from February 5 to March 20.

Red Cross Calls For Blood And Platelet Donations After Severe Winter Weather Impacts Collections As severe winter weather begins to subside, the American Red Cross is asking all eligible blood and platelet donors to help offset a weather-related shortfall in donations. Approximately 280 blood drives across 25 states were canceled across the U.S. due to snow and extreme cold. The blood drive cancellations resulted in a shortfall of nearly 8, 400 blood and platelet donations since Jan. 2. In Northern Indiana, severe winter weather forced the cancellation of more than 30 Red Cross blood drives, resulting about signif icant ly fewer t han expected blood and platelet donations over the past four days. “It’s the blood products already on the shelves that help save lives when severe weather hits,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO of the Red Cross Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region. “Thanks to generous Red Cross blood and platelet donors, blood products were available for patients who still needed transfusions despite the weather. Now we invite those previously ‘frozen out’ from giving blood or platelets to come in soon.” Platelet donors, as well as blood donors with the most in-demand blood types — O positive and negative, A negative and B negative — are urgently needed to give blood in the days and weeks ahead to offset the shortfall. The blizzard that blew through Dolton last week did a good job of chilling everyone to the bone. Mayor Riley Rogers knew that children are more vulnerable to the cold weather than adults so he and dedicated volunteers teamed up with Alison Key of Dolton and ‘Operation Warm’ to organize a new coat drive. The donation exceeded expectations. Over 300 new coats were provided and donated! On January 4 at the Dorchester (before the Mayors birthday celebration) the coat giveway was held. There were many Dolton residents that came out to help and participate in the coat drive. As you can see from the photos, there were excited children and smiles all around. The children were able to try on the different coats and pick just the size and color that they wanted. This first coat drive of Mayor Rogers will be the kick-off to an annual campaign. Mayor Rogers said, “I am so greatful to Alison and ‘Operation Warm’ for their donation to the children of Dolton. They have been a valuable partner and we look forward to working with them in the future. We want to keep our children warm during the cold winter season. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this coat drive a success.” To date, ‘Operation Warm’ has given winter coats to over ONE MILLION children in America and continues to make a difference in many communities across the U.S.

From November through December 2013, CDC has received a number of reports of severe respiratory illness among young and middlea ge d a du lt s, m a ny of whom were infected with influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 (pH1N1) virus. Multiple pH1N1-a s s o c i at e d hospitalizations, including many requiring intensive care unit (ICU) a d m i s s ion , a nd s om e fata lit ies have been r e p or t e d . T h e pH1N1 virus that emerged in 2009 caused more i l lness in children and young adults, compared to older adults, a lt hough severe illness was seen in all age groups. While it is not possible to predict which inf luenza viruses will predominate during the entire 2013-14 influenza season, pH1N1 has been the predominant circulating virus so far. For the 2013-14 season, if pH1N1 virus continues to circulate widely, illness t hat disproportionately affects young and middleaged adults may occur. S e a s on a l i n f luen z a contributes to substantial morbidity and mortality each year in the United St ate s. I n t he 2012-13 inf luen za season, CDC estimates that there were approx i mately 380,0 0 0 i n f luen za-a ssociated hospit a l i z at ion s [1] . A lt hough inf luen za a c t i v i t y n a t i on a l l y i s current ly at low levels, some areas of the United States are a lready experiencing high activity, a nd i n f luen za act iv it y is expected to increase during the next few weeks. CDC recom mends annual inf luenza vaccination for everyone 6 m o n t h s a n d o l d e r. A nyone w ho ha s not yet been vaccinated this s e a s on s hou ld get a n inf luenza vaccine now. While annual vaccination is t he best tool for prevention of inf luenza a nd it s compl icat ions, treatment with antiviral dr ugs (ora l oselta miv ir and inhaled zanamivir) is an important second line of defense for those who become ill to reduce morbidity and mortality. A nt iv i r a l t reat ment i s recom mended as ea rly as possible for a ny patient w ith confirmed or suspected inf luen za who is hospitalized; has severe, complicated, or progressive illness; or is at higher risk for inf luenza complications. Question: If I have proof that my elderly uncle is being mistreated at his nursing home, is there anything I can do to help? Answer: In addition to numerous Federal laws, the safety and rights of nursing home residents in Illinois are protected under the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act. The Illinois Department of Public Health is in charge of enforcing the Nursing Home Care Act throughout the state. The right to be free from abuse and neglect; restraints, unless ordered by a physician to protect a resident; and the ability to refuse medical treatment are among some of the resident’s rights. Alleged violations can be reported through the Nursing Home Ombudsman Program administered by the Illinois Department on Aging. An experienced lawyer may also be able to help. Question: What should I know about Illinois’ new medical marijuana law? Answer: The medical marijuana law, which takes effect on January 1, 2014, is a four-year pilot program that allows registered marijuana users age 18 and older to purchase up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana every 14 days from a registered, licensed dispensary. To qualify, a user must have been diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition. The patient must obtain a written confirmation from a doctor with whom he or she has a legitimate doctor-patient relationship. Persons with felony convictions or who work in certain positions such as law enforcement are prohibited from participating in the program. Question: I still receive phone calls from telemarketers, even though I registered my phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry. What can I do? Answer: Both federal and state laws prohibit telemarketers from contacting you – permanently – if you have signed up on the Registry’s Web site. Calls from political organizations, charities and phone surveyors are excluded. By law, all calls must be made after 8 a.m. and before 9 p.m. Telemarketers are required to identify themselves with their name, the company they represent and a phone number at which their company can be reached. from the little things that we don’t mind giving up, to the things that are difficult, we come to the place where we hold nothing back from Him. Bel iev i ng a nd t r u st i ng i n G od’s unwavering love for us is the prerequisite for living a surrendered life. When we truly accept the fact that God loves us and has a plan for our life that includes a glorious future and a full and purposeful life in the present, we can let go of fear and walk in fellowship with Him. As we continue to grow in His love, surrendering to His will becomes a sought after desire of the heart. Our days will begin with, “Good morning Gracious Father, thank you for a good night sleep. I w a s sure to put “Happy New Year” on one side of the card, in case I didn’t get them out by Christmas. And of course, the cards were late. But, hey! I had LOADS of stuff to do. I’m sure it was busy i n t he 1940s too, w it h t he wa r goi ng on a nd a l l . Ma s t er S er ge a nt Robert Buetow of the 54th Armored Field Artiller y Battalion during W W II, writes a letter to his wife (whom he calls ‘mommy’), wondering why he hadn’t received a letter from her in seven days. And I’ll bet, she had loads of stuff to do. Or else, she was afraid to tell him about the new coat she bought: Saturday, June 9, 1945 My one and only mommy, After seven long days without any mail from you, I finally got a V-mail from the 26th of last month, and an air-mail from the third of this month today. The letters you wrote between those two dates probably got delayed somehow. I’ve been really worried and terribly much “down in the dumps,” and if I hadn’t heard f rom you today I was going to send a cablegram to find out if

anything was wrong. Benge has been getting mail from Chicago pretty regularly, so that ’s why I was worried. In fact, yesterday he got a letter that came by regular mail and got here in six days. No, you hadn’t told me about using that $50 check to get a new winter coat, but that’s perfectly all right with me. I know you’re saving as much as you can for our future, and that’s all that matters. Hone y, you’re a real sweetheart for remembering to buy Dad something for Father’s Day. The way you do little things like that makes me love you more and more all the time. I’ve been prett y busy the la st three days, so consequently I didn’t get a chance to write to you. Medicare Policies And Forms Hurting Seniors WOODROW WILCOX An elderly woman who is a client of this insurance agency phoned me to ask for help. She is from my hometow n of Gr i f f it h, Indiana. She told me t hat she got a big med ic a l bi l l w h i c h s h e c ou l d not afford. She is barely making it financially. She said that her home needed t wo item s replaced or repaired at a cost of over $3,000 and that she could not afford that. Then, a hospital bill for over $1,500 arrived. I asked her i f she could make copies of the medical bill and send it to me. Also, I wanted to see the Medicare Summar y Notice t hat t he federa l government sent her and some other papers from her insurance company. She explained that she had no way to leave her home, ma ke t he copies and send them to me. She had no t ra nspor tat ion a nd w a s i l l. A bout a week before Christmas, I visited her home and she gave me the bill and other items that I wanted. It was one of the few times that I have gone to a client’s home to get papers to work on a bill. It was not easy for me because I am handicapped. When I got the papers back to t he of f ice a nd studied them, I realized t wo t h i ngs. Fi rst, t he federa l government p ol ic y of not helpi n g seniors to pay for selfadministered drugs

(“S.A.D”) when a senior is in the hospital caused the bill to our client. In previous articles, I have explained how this new gover nment polic y has hu r t sen ior cit i zens si nce t he r u les were changed in 2009 by the Obama administration. T he second t h i ng t hat I learned was t hat Med ica re had cha nged its forms to revea l less to t he pat ient about t he s e l f-a d m i n i s t e r e d drugs. I believe this was a n i ntent iona l cha nge to ma ke resea rching and challenging S. A. D. cha rges more d i f f icu lt for senior cit i zens a nd those who help them with medical bills. In my opinion, both the “S.A.D.” charges and the lack of information on Med ica re Su m ma r y Notice (M.S.N.) forms are deliberate policies of the federa l gover n ment to hurt senior citizens. Isn’t that terrible? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. The third option that you may want to look at that you did not discuss in your email is to consider putting your property into a land trust.
