Big Or Small Amounts WOODROW WILCOX On January 10, 2017, I received a phone call from a client from La Porte, I nd i a n a . S h e p h on e d to tel l me t hat I had succeeded in getting her insu ra nce compa ny to pay the final balance on a bill from a medical clinic. The amount was small – less than $30. But, for a senior citizen on a fixed i ncome, even $ 30 ca n make a difference. I n t h i s c a s e , t h e insura nce compa ny did not pay the balance because Medicare ne v er s ent t he c l a i m informat ion to t he i n s u r a n c e c o m p a n y. That problem w it h t he Medicare system happens hundreds of times every day. If someone does not help the senior citizen to investigate and correct the problem, the senior citizen ends up pay ing a bi l l t hat t he sen ior does not owe simply to avoid problems w it h collections, lawsuits, and credit damage. I have helped the senior cit i z en cl ient s of t h i s insurance agency to save over $9,000 and less than $ 30 a nd m a ny plac e s

between those figures. I have a talent for finding and fixing such problems. But, I never try to take all the credit. I give credit to t he ow ners, ma nagers, and staff of this insurance agency. The owners win senior citizen clients to our agency and use me to protect our clients from m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system that might harm our clients financially. If your insurance agent or agency does not care about sen ior cit i zen clients as much as that, maybe you should move you r busi ness to a n agency that does.

Righteous Judgment??? ANNA M. CAISON R e c e nt h e a d l i n e s r e g a r d i n g t h e k id nappi ng a nd tor t u re of a wh ite mentally challenged teen has brought condemnation from the black community a s wel l a s f rom black celebr it ies. I commend Superintendent Eddie Johnson of the Chicago Police Department for his swift response in apprehending the 4 suspects responsible. However, I cannot say the same for Deputy Attorney General Casey Hammer of Dietrich, Idaho in a similar case. In October of 2015, three white teens (ages 18, 17, & 16) from Dietrich High School raped a black mentally challenged teen with a coat hanger (one teen held the disabled teen down, while the other two stripped him of his clothing, rammed and kicked a coat hanger up his rectum). The assault was an accumulation of attacks t hat included being taunted with racial slurs, knocked unconscious (severa l times) t hen stripped na ked and photographed, being humped, and forced to recite a KKK song in front of a Confederate Flag display. These assaults happened on school property, during school hours, on the field, and in the boy’s locker room. The 18-year-old ringleader and his two accomplices will serve no jail time. Attorney General Hammer says the

attack wasn’t actual rape, it wasn’t a hate crime, and it wasn’t racially motivated. It was just boys being boys. Because the attack was reported on the news and on social media, I suspect that what the Chicago 4 did was in retaliation for what happened to the black teen in Dietrich, Idaho. Two wrongs don’t equal right, but in this case, it gives clarity to why these black teens did what they did. If we continue to allow this type of i mba la nced just ice to cont i nue, retaliatory violence will only increase. T hese black teens w i l l be sent to prison. The white teens are free. The white mentally challenged victim and his family will receive justice. The black menta l ly cha l lenged v ict im a nd his family were denied justice. The lives of these black teens are forever destroyed. The white teens however will grow up and incite a new generation of white violence on black lives as they sit around the dinner table bragging to their children and grandchildren about how they ruin the life of a disabled black kid and got away with it. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Don’t Assume Every Home Is Overpriced MIKE BUDER It is in most people’s nature to look for a “great deal”. In some cultures ba rga i n i ng bet ween a seller of something and the buyer is an anticipated procedure of the sale. It is not unheard of to try and get the price of something lowered, even in major stores, but t here is no personal connection by the salesperson with the item being sold in stores. N o w y o u g o t o s om e one’s h om e, t he m o s t p e r s on a l of a l l t hei r possessions. You automatically assume that the house is overpriced, even though your agent may tel l you t hat t hey have looked at the comps and the home seems to be priced correctly. You can certainly afford the listed price. The house f its a ll your needs and you love it, but you cannot br i ng you rsel f to sta r t with a reasonable offer. You ta l k to your agent and tell them what you are willing to pay for the property, which is beyond reasonable. Your agent advises you that the offer would not be worth the paper upon which it is written and you are going to insult the seller. So you wait. You come back a few weeks later and decide to make an offer a little higher than before, but still too low. This house has been sitting on the market for a while, so you are sure that the seller is going to be even more “reasonable”. They a re going to fall over and kiss your feet. But, as happens so many times, Murphy’s Law of home buying kicks

in. There is another offer being considered, maybe all cash, and much higher than you were going to of fer. Had you made a reasonable offer when you first considered buying a nd by “rea sonable” I mea n one t hat wou ld encou rage a cou nter offer, you may have been successful in buying the propert y you obv iously love. Now, even if they look at your offer, chances a re bot h of fers w ill be bid up close to the asking price. R e a l t or s a r e professionals who know the market. If a house is overpriced, often it will be adjusted down to or near its market price. At some point you have to realize that there is a value to the home that you cannot go below. Back to Murphy’s Law of home buying. The minute you want to make an offer on a propert y, another buyer will come out of t he woodwork, especially on a property that has been sitting on t he ma rket for a while and definitely when you have been hanging back. It never fails. If you a re look ing to buy or sel l rea l estate ca ll Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E-ma i l : m i kebuder @ r em a x . ne t , We b s it e : w w w.BuderHomes. com or Facebook Friend request Mike Buder: your c om ment s a re a l w ay s welcome.

BRANDI SMITS Lost in the Sun By Lisa Graff Trent’s life completely cha nge d a f ter a pickup hockey game. Nothing especially weird happened that day up to one specific shot in the game. Everyone shoots a wild puck once in awhile. Trent ’s w i ld shot ju st happened to hit Justin in the chest. Under normal ci rc u m st a nces, no big deal. But Justin had an unknown heart defect and that normal, everyday shot from Trent killed him. In a small town where people’s business is never their own, Trent must live with the stigma of killing someone. It’s not really his fault, but he’ll never see it that way. Now he is a dormant volcano of rage ready to explode with the slightest tremor. He stays aw ay f rom a l l spor t s, despite his love to play, because everyone looks at him funny. His remarried dad and his pregnant wife treat him differently than his ot her t wo brot hers when they meet for their we ek ly d i n ner s. Trent eventually can’t handle the attitude he perceives from his dad and starts making excuses to stay away. Fortunately, one of his excuses turns out to be beneficial for Trent. Enter Fallon. Fa l l o n i s a s u p e r energetic, sassy girl with curly hair and a large scar

Purse: Coach, $15; womens clothing, purses, shoes, $5; mens dress pants, tops, coats, shoes, $5 ea; scrubs $2; ironing board & pad, $5. 708-460-6035

t hat spa n s t he leng t h of her face She’s always w illing to tell someone the true story about her scar, although the story changes every time. One day Fallon helped Trent out w it h some bu l lies. Despite his resistance, the two started to eat lunch t o g e t h e r. T h e n Tr e n t would stop over at Fallon’s to watch baseball movies, Trent ’s favor ite spor t . While things appeared to be getting better, Trent’s dormant volcano of anger still rumbled and smoked, waiting for an opportunity t o e r u p t . W i l l Tr e n t become the evil person that he believes everyone sees when t hey look at him? Can he forge a better future from the past that haunts him? Lost in the Sun is a story about a teen boy who must assimilate himself to sit uat ions he wou ld rather avoid. W hile the freak accident part of the stor y is incredibly fa rfetched, the struggles that Trent endures involving his temper, his siblings, h is fat her, a nd bu l l ies are completely relatable for middle grade readers. Lost in the Sun also has several sports references, including routine v iew i ngs of a ga me bet ween Trent a nd his mom. Unfortunately they are Dodger fans, but the Cubs beat the Dodgers in the book so it’s easier to overlook.
