Theatre Group Gives Sondheim’s Classic COMPANY a Modern-day Makeover e x i n t he C it y m e e t s c l a s s ic Sond hei m i n t h is h i la r ious romp through the dating and married lives of 5 couples and a perpetual bachelor named Bobby. It’s Stephen Sondheim’s COMPANY, presented by t he Sout h la nd A rea Theatre Ensemble, and it’s coming to a stage near you — the Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University. Performance dates are January 24 and 25 at 7:30 p.m. and January 26 at 2 p.m. Winner of 6 Tony Awards including Best Musica l, Stephen Sondheim’s COMPANY is considered a landmark “concept” show t hat i naug u rated the modern era of musical theatre. Set in New York, the play tells the story of five couples and their mutual friend, Robert, on the night of his 35t h bir t hday as he contemplates his unmarried state and eventually realizes that fairytale or not, life is better shared. Director of Southland Area Theatre Ensemble, J.R. Rose from Tinley Park, says “This will not be your traditional 19 7 0 ‘s C O M PA N Y ! We w i l l b e re-imagining the traditional view of COMPANY in the contemporary 21st century.” Music is by Aaron Kaplan and choreography is by Becky Dedecker. The 13-member cast is all local, hailing from Crete, Chicago, Chicago Heights, Homewood, Flossmoor and Oak Lawn.

SL ATE was established in 2009 as an artistic collaboration between the Center for Performing Arts, local theater educators, and veterans of area community theater companies. SLATE has produced five critically acclaimed summer productions, “Into the Woods” in 2009, “The Wedding Singer” in 2010, “Ragtime” in 2011, “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” in 2012, and “HAIR,” in 2013, as well as a number of cabaret performances, including Sondheim’s timeless “Assassins.”

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our daughter wants to buy a house, but she seems to be more worried about the color of the walls than what the home has to offer. What can I tell her so she sees what to look for in a home? Answer: If you have hunted for a house, you probably got a sense that real-estate purchases don’t represent consumers at their most rational. Did you like a house more or less depending on whether you saw it on a sunny day? Chances are, you did. Buy ing a house isn’t t he same as buying a stock, an air conditioner or even a car. It’s not just a product with pluses and minuses — good school system versus a small kitchen, a new roof versus a longer commute. A house represents the kind of life you want to live. And given its cost, a house and the value it gains or loses represents the life you could live. So, it ca n be d ist u rbi ng, t houg h probably not surprising, to realize that people’s judgment about real estate is susceptible to many of the foolish forces t hat a f fect so ma ny ot her consumer decisions. In some ways, it may be affected even more. Superficial things such as a room painted an ugly color can make people less likely to buy a house, even though

fixing that problem is as cheap as a couple of cans of paint. We’ve seen people walk away from a house that they really liked because it has green shag carpeting in the Living room. That vision destroyed the other positive thoughts they had about this house. As far as your daughter goes, you need to sit down with her, and put your years of wisdom and experience in front of her. Explain what she really needs to watch out for in a house purchase. How she can change many things inexpensively, but other items may be very costly. Have her speak to a real estate professional. They certainly will back your wise comments. Also, be sure she writes a contract on a house t hat is cont ingent on a home inspection by a licensed home inspector. If she still insists on buying for the wrong reasons, then it looks like experience is going to be her teacher. Epic Snow Storms Can’t Stop Dolton The crews that take care of Dolton roads, plowing and salting so we can travel safely have been in overdrive this winter. The January 5 storm dropped snowfall of over 15” in Dolton and the temperatures dipped to -18 degrees. Dolton has over 70 miles of roads that are plowed and salted by the Public Works crews. “It ’s b e e n v e r y h e c t i c ,” s a i d Matt Stacey, Dolton Public Work s Superintendent. “We haven’t had snow and ice like this in many years. It puts a strain on your crews. What makes it even more difficult was the subzero temperatures. I’m proud of the job that Supervisor Ron Jones and all the crew accomplished.” Dolton Mayor Rogers said, “Our goal is to keep the roads safe and driveable for Dolton residents. We made a huge effort to manage these storms. Wit h t his storm, we were f ighting drifts and high winds that made it even harder. We paid close attention to the weather forecast and we knew what to expect – huge snow drifts, high winds and frigid temperatures. W hen we saw that our public works crews were INSERT PIX = Primelogo.eps. Drivers: Part-Time & FullTime Driving Opportunities. Seeking CDL-A drivers to service large distribution c e n t e r . They park their trucks in Harvey, and Supervisor Ron Jones and I were able to negotiate a rate that was less than half of what they usually charge. I knew that Dolton residents

needed to get to work, a nd ot her important meetings, such doctor’s appointments. They came in to assist our public works crew and made it possible to plow Dolton streets curb to curb. They also assisted us in plowing out the alleys to make them drivable for cars and trucks. I am very proud of our public works crews and every employee that went above and beyond to help the residents of Dolton. This storm packed a punch, but we fought back and the storm did not beat us.” Du r i ng t he rest of t he w i nter, Dolton residents are asked to give way to snow plows when they are on the job. Snow plow trucks weigh 16,000to 22,000-pounds and can’t stop on a dime. It can be dangerous if cars drive too closely behind a plow truck, as they can be in the driver’s blind spot when he needs to back up for a turnaround. Please stay at least 100 feet behind the trucks. It’s also important to remove cars from village streets when the snow begins to fall. Streets that are free of cars are much easier to plow from curb to curb.

What happens to credit after Bankruptcy?

ARTHUR V. VEAL IV Millions of Americans have found refuge under the U.S. bankruptcy laws over time. In the last few years, even more families have filed bankruptcy as a way to rid themselves of de bt , pr ot e c t t hei r home from foreclosure, and try to get their head above water. For many, bankruptcy seems like the end of a financial road. You have done all you can do and the last option for you is to file bankruptcy. The t r ut h of t he matter is ver y different. Ba n k r uptcy whet her for business or personal is a busi ness decision. Let me state that aga i n. Ba n k r uptc y is a BUSINESS decision. Now w het her t hat bu si ne s s is your personal finance business or the business of a compa ny t hat you ow n you must t hin k of it in t hat context. Ta ke your emotion out of the equat ion a nd do w hat is best for you and your family. As I’m sure you have heard, many people have gone on to be very s uc c e s s f u l f i n a nc i a l l y after f iling bank ruptcy. Names like Henr y Ford, Walt Disney, and Milton Hershey have a l l gone on to great things after bankruptcy. After bankruptcy many families feel defeated and beaten. T hey have just gotten creditors off their back and don’t want to hear the word debt ever again. But you must not look at this as an end but as a beginning. This is the restart of your financial destiny. As such, you must make choices to improve y ou r f i n a nc e s b e y ond ba n k r upt c y. I s u g ge s t

starting the day after your bankruptcy is discharged. Yo u n e e d t o s t a r t r ig ht a w a y r ebu i ld i n g your credit. You need to establish new credit. If you have ever been thru bankruptcy then you know that you will get all kinds of offers for credit cards. Credit card companies do that because they know you can’t file bankruptcy again and you will have to pay them. They also know that you are a lower credit r isk because you don’t have any other debt AND t hey ca n cha rge higher rates. My sug gest ion is to not touch a ny of t hose c a rd s. I n stead pla n to create at minimum 3 new lines of credit. I would use a passbook sav ings loan from a local bank. A passbook savings loan is safe and has a ver y low interest rate and it will add a major bank to your credit repor t. Check out you r local bank or credit union for more information. Finally, remember you don’t get a ny points or credit (pun intended) for not using your credit. You must reestablish credit and no time to start like t he present. Just ma ke wise credit decisions like passbook loans and get copies of good payment h istor y f rom a nyone a nd ever yone you pay regularly. Until next week, Good luck and God Bless and remember… If you want to sell your house within 7 days regardless of if you have equity… check out our informative website at www.sellonterms.com for more information.

Tips for Finding the Right School for Your Child By Andrew Campanella If you’d like to send your child to a different school next year, now’s the time to start the process of researching your options. As Illinois prepares to commemorate National School Choice Week later this month at 240 events across the state, many parents will begin evaluating the educational opportunities that are available for their children. Believe it or not, seats in schools are already beginning to fill up for the 2014-2015 school year. Interest in school choice – the process of actively choosing a public, charter, magnet, private, or online school – is high. That means that waiting until the spring or the summer to begin researching schools for your children could restrict your options. No handbook or tipsheet can truly guide parents through the entire process of selecting a school, because choosing schools is an individual experience that will be unique to every family. However, parents can start by making a list of the attributes that they hope to find in an ideal school. Ask yourself: what’s most important to you and to the academic, socia l, a nd emotiona l well-being of your child? Is it the academic performance of a school, school safety, the instructional methods, the qualifications of teachers, the school’s educational theme, a school’s shared values, or other factors?

Once you’ve identified what matters most, start looking into the options available to you. In addition to the local public school, you may be eligible to send your child to a school outside of your ZIP code, or in a different school district. Look into nearby charter schools and magnet schools. Don’t leave private and faith based schools off your list! You might be able to find scholarships to cover the costs of tuition. And for some families, online learning and homeschooling work best. To find the options available to you, look at information from the Illinois department of education, as well as information on state-based education reform or school choice organization websites. For states with charter and magnet schools, there are often state-based associations that provide directories of these types of schools, along with application information. Private schools and scholarship programs can be researched through state chapters of the Council on American Private Education or the National Association of Independent Schools, or through local places of worship (for faith-based schools). For a directory of most schools in your area, along with parent rankings and some performance metrics, parents can visit this website: greatschools.org. With your list of requirements and your list of schools in hand, start making appointments to visit the schools. Ask to sit in on classes, and make sure to ask as many questions

as possible of teachers, the administration, and support staff. You’ll want to find out what motivates the adults in the building, while also seeing how the students in the classes respond to their teachers. Ask yourself: is this a place where I’d want to send my child for most of his or her weekday waking hours? Finally, make sure to talk with other parents – and to your own children. Ask parents how the schools’ administrators treat parents, and whether they welcome, or discourage, parental involvement. And most importantly, ask your children about their perceptions of the schools that you’ve visited. Find out what excites and motivates your child at school, but also ask about their worries, concerns and apprehensions. Making the decision to change schools certainly isn’t easy. And switching schools isn’t a piece of cake, either. But if you start now, and plan out the journey, you’ll find that the destination – a great school for your child – is well worth the diligence and effort. Andrew R. Campanella is the president of National School Choice Week. National School Choice Week, which runs from January 26 to February 1, 2014, is America’s largest-ever celebration of educational opportunity. Andrew lives in Miramar Beach, Florida.

Agent or No Agent MIKE BUDER Some buyers a nd sellers wonder whet her t he y c a n s a v e mone y by not usi ng a Rea ltor for their home sale and/ or purchase. I w ill do my best to ex pla in t he v a r iables for d i f ferent t y pes of t r a n sac t ion s. SELLING A HOME, y ou w i l l pr ob a bl y b e b e st s er v e d to h i r e a Realtor to list it for you a nd to represent you r i nterests t h roug hout t he t ra nsact ion. T h is is known as a “fiduciary r e s p o n s i b i l i t y ”, a n d Rea ltors must abide by a code of et hics which mea ns we a re work ing for you a lone, not ou r own interests or those of the buyer. Realtors must treat everyone fairly, but for negotiations it is very helpful to be represented by a professional. This also applies to exposure for you r home. More than 80% of homes sell in the MLS. It will behoove you to have a full-service agent who can help with pr ic i n g , phot o g r a ph y, staging, marketing, negotiations, inspections (which sometimes lead to additional negotiations), and the closing process itself. If you try to go it alone, the statistics show that “For Sale by Owner” homes event ua l ly end up listing with a realtor around 85% of the time. Buying a RESALE HOME, you c ou ld go d i re c t l y to the listing agent in an attempt to get t hem to discount services because you have no agent helping you. They however are

under no obligat ion to g i ve you a ny of t hei r commission. Additionally, since the listing agent is representing t he seller, t hey a re on t he ot her team and work ing against you with regard to t he s a le pr ic e a nd repair negotiations, so it could end up costing you mor e. BU Y I NG N E W CONSTRUCTION, builder pricing normally includes agent commissions. Reputable builders w ill not discount or undercut Rea ltor s bec au se t he y bring them a lion’s share of their business. So the bottom line is that although it is possible, you probably won’t save money if you choose not to hire an agent. This is beside the additional time spent and stress involved. You wou ld not go i nto court w it hout a law yer or do your own surger y without a doctor…allow a professional to handle your rea l estate needs. Realtors do this stuff every day! DONNA HOLMER

You may have hea rd about a new rule that may impact people looking to purchase or refinance a home. What is This Rule? As of January 10, 2014, lenders are required to more thoroughly assess a borrower’s “ability to repay” a loan, so that he or she can receive a “Qualified Mortgage” (QM). Why was it Enacted? T he r u le is pa r t of t he Dodd-Fra n k Consumer Protection Act, which made banks and mortgage lenders legally liable for determining borrowers’ abilities to repay their mortgages. It was enacted to help ensure borrowers get a home loan they can afford to repay, and to help

What is the Bottom Line? While new guidelines are now in effect related to loan limits, a borrower’s debtto-income ratio, fees and other items, the good news is that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) estimates that 95 percent of all mortgages made in 2013 already met the new rule. So there’s a good chance the new rule won’t impact the majority of borrowers.

Congresswoman Robin Kelly Visits Dolton

GOD WITH US

www.myshopper.biz/columnists/

He’s Coming! ANNA M. CAISON Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Lord returned in our lifetime?! Just imagine, t he t r u mpet of God sou nd i ng f rom heaven. I wonder if all the inhabitants of the earth will hear the sound of the trumpet or will only His followers hear it? And then, in a twinkling of an eye, we whose names are written the Savior’s Book of Life, will be changed from mortal to immorta l and be ta ken from t his place. The dead in Christ first and then us will be caught up to meet Him in the sky and be with Him forever. W hen we think about how old the writings of the scriptures are that speak of Jesus’ return many may be tempted to think that since He hasn’t come back after all this time He won’t because the scriptures are not true. After all since the 19th century there has been so many predictions made of His return and the end of the world and yet none of it has came to pass! When Jesus’ disciples asked Him when He would return, He replied only the Father knew when that day would be. He went on to say that His return would be

Commissioner Larry Rogers Jr, Congresswoman Robin Kelly join Mayor Riley Rogers to make sure Dolton residents get the representation they deserve. ___________________________________________________

‘Coffee with the Mayor’ is held every month at the Dorchester Senior Center. On Saturday January 11, US Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Cook Count y Board of Review Commissioner Larry Rogers were in attendance as special guest speakers. Com m issioner La r r y Rogers rem inded everyone that his office was there to help homeowners make sure their property tax bill was accurate. He encouraged everyone to attend school board meetings since the school district makes up the majority of their property tax bill. Congresswoman Robin Kelly thanked everyone for coming out on a cold winter day. She gave an update on progress in Wa sh i ng ton DC rega rd i ng i mpor t a nt initiatives. Important pending legislation is the federal extension of unemployment benefits. Congresswoman Kelly expressed her support for this extension and said, “These benefits are important to give those who are looking for a job a helping hand during this tough economic period.” Mayor R i le y H. Roger s t hen took com ment s a nd sug gest ion s f rom t he aud ienc e. G a r r e t t G he z z i e x pr e s s e d Assorted colors fiesta dishes (each piece $3) Early Pyres dishes (pastel colors) $3 each pcs. 708-481-6907 Assorted rugs (from throw rugs to room size rugs) $10$100; decorative wall pictures $10-$25 each; rugs, runners also. 708-481-6907 Large over the dresser mirror $15; Ornamental wall mirrors $20-$30. 708-481-6907 2 Tier occasional table (solid cherry) $75 obo; Ethan Allen side table walnut $75; Ethan Allen sofa $125 obo. 708-4816907 2 bar stools (vintage, stainless s t e e l s e a t s u p h o l s t e re d green) $60. 708-481-6907 Shark steamblaster europrox $30, complete with attachments and instructions; Brother MFC210C printer, fax, copier, scanner (6 functions in 1). 708-481-6907

appreciation for the great job from the public works department during the big snow storms. He said, “I have lived in Dolton over 60 years and this is the first time that we ever have had the alleys snow plowed. Thanks Mayor Rogers.” Another Dolton resident reminded others that everyone can take responsibility to clear their street drains of ice and snow. This helps to drain the melting snow and clears the streets of deep water. Mayor Rogers invites all residents of Dolton every month to bring their issues and concerns—where he can personally answer them and work on resolving them. These coffees are for one purpose - to make the Village of Dolton a better place to live. No concern is too small or too large to be addressed. You cannot make a positive cha nge in your Village un less you a re concerned and involved. Take advantage of this monthly opportunity and be heard. Bring critique, criticism and suggestions to the Mayor. We hope to see you at the next ‘Coffee with the Mayor’ on Saturday Februar y 8 at 8:30am at the Dorchester Senior Center.

like it was in the days of Noah when the flood came. What were the days of Noah like when the flood came? The Genesis account says the earth was filled with violence. To paraphrase what Jesus said in Matthew and Luke, the people lived like there was no tomorrow; no reckoning of one’s sin. And suddenly the f loods came; water gushing up from the earth and falling from the sky. The people who laughed and mocked Noah and his message were pounding on the door of the ark “Let us in!” But it was too late. God had sealed the door shut. The Apostle Peter writes in 2 Peter 3 that although it seems like He’s not coming back, He is. God is patiently g iv i ng t hose who reject Hi m a n opportunity to seek Him and know Him so they may live forever with Him and not die. Are you ready for His return? Will you welcome His coming? For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

In late July of 2012, the Government Accounting Office released the results of a t wo yea r st udy of Obamacare. That report stated that the Obamacare law would result in more than $700 billion dollars of reduced Medicare benefits for senior citizens. The feder a l gover n ment i s busy changing Medicare rules in order to shift more costs onto senior citizens a nd save t he federa l gover n ment over $70 0 billion dollars to finance the Obamacare law.

I re c eive d a phone call from a client of this i nsu ra nce agenc y on January 3, 2014. The client is an elderly woman from Whiting, Indiana. She phone d me t o t ha n k me for work i ng with her to help her with a bill for medicine that Medicare refused to help her pay wh i le she was hospitalized. She said that she showed her doctor the bill for the medicine and her doctor was shocked by the bill that totaled over $1,500 for medicine that should not cost that much. God bless that doctor for t r y i ng to help t he patient w it h a bill t hat Medicare refused to cover in any way, shape, or form. I have hea rd of ot her doctors who have tried to help the patient. I believe that most doctors go to medical school because they know that they have a natural ability or talent in the field of medicine and because they really want to help people. That is not often the case with politicians and lobby i st s w ho ch a nge t he r u les of med ici ne. RENEE N. HALE, DSL Leaders, a re you fol lowers, too ? I’l l bet y ou a n s w e r w i t h , “It depends…” and that about sums it up! According to t he sit uat ion i n wh ich we f i nd ou r selves, we are either in a leading or fol low ing role. In fact, most of us are regularly mov ing bet ween t he roles. The best leaders are those that know how to follow well; and, the best followers are those who consider carefully what helps their leader (s) most. Dr. Jeff Hale puts it this way: “Lead as you want to be led; follow as you want to be followed.” This is the Golden Rule, if you will, of leaders. You can be a good leader as well as a good follower. F i r s t , e m br a c e t h e j ou r ne y f r om le a d i n g self to leading another, to lead i ng ot her s. It ’s progressive development through increasing levels of leadership inf luence. When a leader is “in over his or her head” it usually me a n s t he y h a v en’t experienced enough along the way to be prepared for where they are leading. There are no short cuts! Next, accept com municat ion a nd input from those around you. If you’re a follower, it may be expected of you

If you’re a leader, listen to your followers so that you can make better decisions and take care of your followers better. Finally, recognize the disconnection that may occur when leaders are put on a pedestal as a “higher s t a t u s” a nd f ol low e r s a re looked dow n upon as a “lower status”. This unhealthy state of leaders a nd fol lowers causes d isrespect, c y n icism, negativity, and eventually degrades productivity and quality of outcomes. What’s Your Big Idea? KEVIN BRADLEY K ids a lways seem t o h a v e a f a v or it e of ever ything. W hen I was a k id g row i ng up, my favorite letter was X. X is a versatile letter, not the most popular, but having muc h p ow e r t o e l ic it emotional response. It has its own rating i n t he mot ion pic t u re industr y. X is the stock symbol for U.S. Steel. X is t he na me of a pun k rock band. X is a Roman nu mer a l, represent i ng the number ten. There is a hugely popular comic book and movie franchise about T he X-Men. T he me d ic a l f ield h a s t he X-r ay mach i ne. T he X chromosome determines your sex. Malcolm X was a civil rights leader. Speed Racer had a mysterious cha racter k now n as Racer-X. Vin Diesel had a mov ie ca l led X X X . M ic rosof t ha s a ga me system, The X Box, and Comcast refers to their ser v ices as X f init y. We often say, “X marks the spot. Tic-Tac-Toe is played with Xs and Os. We are often told to indicate our preference w it h a n X . W hen a couple breaks a relationship, they develop an ex, which is how X is technically spelled. Ma ny word s i n t he English language begin with the letter E, followed by X . I n t hese word s, X dom i nates t he E. Small motorcycle, log splitter any shape, or parts for one, Mercury pump for power washer, plus spray nozzle and hose. 708-474-8221

Examples: Exterminate, extra, expand, extricate, ex ubera nt, ex istent ia l, exit, exam, exoskeleton, expunge, expound, excruciating, and many more. It’s as though the E is not even necessary. Also notable…sometimes the x sounds like ks, and sometimes it emanates a gs sound. However, there are very few words in the English language which begin with X, and in those t hat do, t he X usua l ly sounds like the letter Z. For all of its fanfare, the letter X does not even garner a full dictionar y page. In fact, it is the third least used letter in t he English language, adding to its mystique. However, when X is used, it excels i n d r aw i ng at t ent ion . It exudes its authority. It evokes feel i ngs power, excla i m i ng loud a nd proud, hear me…I am X. The letter X shows us that we don’t have to be the most popular to be i mpor t a nt. We c a n be much more influential in the world doing our own t h i ng. Illinois Law Now!

Question: I’m planning to buy a new home in 2014. What steps can I take to help ensure that I qualify for a mortgage? Answer: Some home buyers may find it harder to get loans because of new rules issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. To increase your probability of success, know in advance how much you can afford by getting preapproved for a mortgage before you begin house hunting, and be willing to make a larger down payment, at least 20 percent if possible. Also, know your closing costs in advance to avoid any surprises on the day of the property transfer. Be sure to consult your lawyer prior to signing the agreement of purchase and sale, and for other matters related to the purchase. Question: My friend and I put a deposit down on an apartment that we rented for a year. When our lease expired, we were supposed to get our deposit back, but the owner did not return it and will not respond to our emails and calls. Our financial situation prevents us from hiring a lawyer. What recourse do we have? Answer: Assuming that the amount owed is relatively small, you could file a lawsuit in small claims court. Defendants in small claims court often choose to pay up rather than spend time and money going through the process. Another option is to seek pro bono legal assistance from a local government or legal aid organization. Question: As a homeowner, am I legally responsible for removing snow and ice on my sidewalk? Answer: Homeow ners have a dut y to maintain their property in a reasonably safe condition. In general, a propert y ow ner is not obligated to remove a natura l accumulation of snow and ice; voluntarily undertaking its removal can leave the owner subject to liability if the removal leads to a slip-and-fall accident. However, some towns do have an ordinance requiring landowners to remove ice and snow from public sidewalks in front of their property. Check with your local municipality about the laws in your area. For more information about Illinois law, visit w w w. illinoislawyerfinder.com. If you have a legal question, send it to illinoislawcolumn@isba.org. SNOW COVERED SIDEWALKS... We’ve had a lot of snow so far this winter - why is it that businesses have their parking lots cleared but don’t seem to think they need to worry about the sidewalks. The post office says they don’t have to deliver the mail if your sidewalk isn’t cleared, yet their sidewalks are snow covered, slushy and sometimes icy for several days. Is it too much to ask businesses and residents to clear their sidewalks? Speak Out is your chance to express your opinion, anonymously. You can e-mail us at general@myshopper.biz. Please keep your comments as short as possible. Opinions expressed are strictly those of the author.

S T. F LO R I A N PA R E N TS , K O F C FUNDRAISER: Pictured here are the General Pulaski Knights of Columbus of Hegewisch hosted a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, Saturday January 18, 2014 at St. Florian Hall along with fundraiser volunteers, students and parents. The fund raiser in this instance was for the Air Conditioning at the school. In the next photo, a group of St. Florian students and parents are asking for help in keeping the school open past next June 2014. St. Florian, along with 5 other Catholic schools in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese have been put on notice they have been slated for closing. They have been given the opportunity to come up with a plan that involves money sufficient to keep the schools open. Those numbers vary from school to school and the St. Florian parents have suggested coming up with an extra $100 per month tuition ($50 for families with more than 1 student) in addition to ‘[angel’ pledges for thousands of dollars over the course of the next several years from families, community members and others. ***
