Set in New York, the play tells the story of five couples and their mutual friend, Robert, on the night of his 35t h bir t hday as he contemplates his unmarried state and eventually realizes that fairytale or not, life is better shared. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our daughter wants to buy a house, but she seems to be more worried about the color of the walls than what the home has to offer. What can I tell her so she sees what to look for in a home? Answer: If you have hunted for a house, you probably got a sense that real-estate purchases don’t represent consumers at their most rational. Did you like a house more or less depending on whether you saw it on a sunny day? Chances are, you did. Buy ing a house isn’t t he same as buying a stock, an air conditioner or even a car. It’s not just a product with pluses and minuses — good school system versus a small kitchen, a new roof versus a longer commute. A house represents the kind of life you want to live. And given its cost, a house and the value it gains or loses represents the life you could live. So, it ca n be d ist u rbi ng, t houg h probably not surprising, to realize that people’s judgment about real estate is susceptible to many of the foolish forces t hat a f fect so ma ny ot her consumer decisions. In some ways, it may be affected even more. Superficial things such as a room painted an ugly color can make people less likely to buy a house, even though

fixing that problem is as cheap as a couple of cans of paint. We’ve seen people walk away from a house that they really liked because it has green shag carpeting in the Living room. That vision destroyed the other positive thoughts they had about this house. As far as your daughter goes, you need to sit down with her, and put your years of wisdom and experience in front of her. Explain what she really needs to watch out for in a house purchase. How she can change many things inexpensively, but other items may be very costly. Have her speak to a real estate professional. They certainly will back your wise comments. Also, be sure she writes a contract on a house t hat is cont ingent on a home inspection by a licensed home inspector. If she still insists on buying for the wrong reasons, then it looks like experience is going to be her teacher. Epic Snow Storms Can’t Stop Dolton The crews that take care of Dolton roads, plowing and salting so we can travel safely have been in overdrive this winter. The January 5 storm dropped snowfall of over 15” in Dolton and the temperatures dipped to -18 degrees. Dolton has over 70 miles of roads that are plowed and salted by the Public Works crews. “It ’s b e e n v e r y h e c t i c ,” s a i d Matt Stacey, Dolton Public Work s Superintendent. “We haven’t had snow and ice like this in many years. It puts a strain on your crews. What makes it even more difficult was the subzero temperatures. I’m proud of the job that Supervisor Ron Jones and all the crew accomplished.” Dolton Mayor Rogers said, “Our goal is to keep the roads safe and driveable for Dolton residents. It can be dangerous if cars drive too closely behind a plow truck, as they can be in the driver’s blind spot when he needs to back up for a turnaround. Please stay at least 100 feet behind the trucks. It’s also important to remove cars from village streets when the snow begins to fall. Streets that are free of cars are much easier to plow from curb to curb.

If you have ever been thru bankruptcy then you know that you will get all kinds of offers for credit cards. Credit card companies do that because they know you can’t file bankruptcy again and you will have to pay them. They also know that you are a lower credit r isk because you don’t have any other debt AND t hey ca n cha rge higher rates. My sug gest ion is to not touch a ny of t hose c a rd s. I n stead pla n to create at minimum 3 new lines of credit. I would use a passbook sav ings loan from a local bank. A passbook savings loan is safe and has a ver y low interest rate and it will add a major bank to your credit repor t. Check out you r local bank or credit union for more information. Finally, remember you don’t get a ny points or credit (pun intended) for not using your credit. You must reestablish credit and no time to start like t he present. Just ma ke wise credit decisions like passbook loans and get copies of good payment h istor y f rom a nyone a nd ever yone you pay regularly. Tips for Finding the Right School for Your Child By Andrew Campanella If you’d like to send your child to a different school next year, now’s the time to start the process of researching your options. As Illinois prepares to commemorate National School Choice Week later this month at 240 events across the state, many parents will begin evaluating the educational opportunities that are available for their children. Believe it or not, seats in schools are already beginning to fill up for the 2014-2015 school year. Interest in school choice – the process of actively choosing a public, charter, magnet, private, or online school – is high. That means that waiting until the spring or the summer to begin researching schools for your children could restrict your options. No handbook or tipsheet can truly guide parents through the entire process of selecting a school, because choosing schools is an individual experience that will be unique to every family. However, parents can start by making a list of the attributes that they hope to find in an ideal school. Ask yourself: what’s most important to you and to the academic, socia l, a nd emotiona l well-being of your child? Is it the academic performance of a school, school safety, the instructional methods, the qualifications of teachers, the school’s educational theme, a school’s shared values, or other factors?

Once you’ve identified what matters most, start looking into the options available to you. In addition to the local public school, you may be eligible to send your child to a school outside of your ZIP code, or in a different school district. Look into nearby charter schools and magnet schools. Don’t leave private and faith based schools off your list! You might be able to find scholarships to cover the costs of tuition. And for some families, online learning and homeschooling work best. To find the options available to you, look at information from the Illinois department of education, as well as information on state-based education reform or school choice organization websites. For states with charter and magnet schools, there are often state-based associations that provide directories of these types of schools, along with application information. Private schools and scholarship programs can be researched through state chapters of the Council on American Private Education or the National Association of Independent Schools, or through local places of worship (for faith-based schools). For a directory of most schools in your area, along with parent rankings and some performance metrics, parents can visit this website: greatschools.org. With your list of requirements and your list of schools in hand, start making appointments to visit the schools. Ask to sit in on classes, and make sure to ask as many questions

Coach Ruzich was an All-American catcher at the College of Saint Francis and was drafted in 1985 by the Chicago W hite Sox. Coach Ruzich will be conducting Adult-Child Baseball Camps February 14-23 for boys and girls 6-14 years of age. In late July of 2012, the Government Accounting Office released the results of a t wo yea r st udy of Obamacare. That report stated that the Obamacare law would result in more than $700 billion dollars of reduced Medicare benefits for senior citizens. The feder a l gover n ment i s busy changing Medicare rules in order to shift more costs onto senior citizens a nd save t he federa l gover n ment over $70 0 billion dollars to finance the Obamacare law.

I re c eive d a phone call from a client of this i nsu ra nce agenc y on January 3, 2014. The client is an elderly woman from Whiting, Indiana. She phone d me t o t ha n k me for work i ng with her to help her with a bill for medicine that Medicare refused to help her pay wh i le she was hospitalized. She said that she showed her doctor the bill for the medicine and her doctor was shocked by the bill that totaled over $1,500 for medicine that should not cost that much. God bless that doctor for t r y i ng to help t he patient w it h a bill t hat Medicare refused to cover in any way, shape, or form. I have hea rd of ot her doctors who have tried to help the patient. I believe that most doctors go to medical school because they know that they have a natural ability or talent in the field of medicine and because they really want to help people. That is not often the case with politicians and lobby i st s w ho ch a nge t he r u les of med ici ne. In this case, the Obama ad m i n ist rat ion leaders of Medicare changed the rules to disallow payment for ma ny med ici nes t hat sen ior cit i zens need when they go to a hospital. Question: I’m planning to buy a new home in 2014. What steps can I take to help ensure that I qualify for a mortgage? Answer: Some home buyers may find it harder to get loans because of new rules issued by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. To increase your probability of success, know in advance how much you can afford by getting preapproved for a mortgage before you begin house hunting, and be willing to make a larger down payment, at least 20 percent if possible. Question: My friend and I put a deposit down on an apartment that we rented for a year. When our lease expired, we were supposed to get our deposit back, but the owner did not return it and will not respond to our emails and calls. Our financial situation prevents us from hiring a lawyer. What recourse do we have? Answer: Assuming that the amount owed is relatively small, you could file a lawsuit in small claims court. Defendants in small claims court often choose to pay up rather than spend time and money going through the process. Another option is to seek pro bono legal assistance from a local government or legal aid organization. Question: As a homeowner, am I legally responsible for removing snow and ice on my sidewalk? Answer: Homeow ners have a dut y to maintain their property in a reasonably safe condition. In general, a propert y ow ner is not obligated to remove a natura l accumulation of snow and ice; voluntarily undertaking its removal can leave the owner subject to liability if the removal leads to a slip-and-fall accident.
