My Inconclusive Travel Plans for 2016 ARLO KALLEMEYN I have been in many places, but I’ve never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can’t go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I’ve a lso never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don’t have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I’m not too much on physical activity anymore. I have a lso been i n Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I’ve been in Flexible,
but only when it was very important to stand firm. S o m e t i m e s I ’m i n Capable, and I go there more often as I’m getting older. One of my f avor ite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! And, sometimes I think I am in Vincible but life shows me I am not. People keep tel l i ng me I’m in Denial but I’m positive I’ve never been there before! Thanks to a Shopper reader for sending t his week’s column. It’s Not Too Late To Register For Spring Classes Registration for the 2016 Spring Semester at South Suburban College is still in progress for a wide range of “Late Start� classes. Current and prospective students are encouraged to register soon for these 12-week courses, set to begin February 16th and later. Prospect ive students shou ld get sta r ted w it h t he Online Application at www.ssc.edu. Becoming a student is simple, and there is still time to apply for Financial Aid and to speak with Admissions staff and counselors. Once the application process is complete, new students will receive an SSC email account and a “My SSC� Username & Password via email which will allow access to student information and class registration. The “My SSC� portal also allows students 24-hour access during college closed periods. Both interactive and printable Spring Credit Class Schedules are also accessible online from www.ssc.edu. The Late Start classes are offered in a variety of subject areas including Accounting, Art, Building Construction Technology, Business, Community Health Worker, Criminal Justice, Court Reporting, Emergency Medical Technician, English, Health Information Technolog y, Humanities, Foundations for College Success (OCS), Mathematics, Manufacturing, Music, Physical Education, Pharm Tech, Reading, Spanish, and more. Payment is currently due at the time of registration for Late Start classes, but Financial Aid can be utilized for the 12-week credit classes (FAFSA must be completed by the end of January). SSC’s Financial Aid Office encourages all students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible at fafsa.gov using institution code 001769. For help filling out FAFSA, please call (708) 596-2000, extension 2242 or stop by the Financial Aid Office (Room 2355) for assistance. Like Light Through a Prism ANNA M. CAISON
Whenever I see a prism I’m reminded of two things. One, I’m reminded of the marvel of childhood delightfully expressed through a young orphan named Pollyanna in the 1960 Disney movie, “Pollyanna.” After the death of her missionary parents, Polly is sent to live with her mother’s sister for whom Polly is named after. The entire tow n, including the church is under the control of Polly’s wealthy aunt. This makes for a very bitter and grumpy town. Polly meets a young boy from the town orphanage and follows him to a house where an old retired professor lives. In the course of the commotion of trespassing on private property and being caught by Professor Pendergrass, Polly discovers an amazing thing about the cr ystals hanging from the professor’s lamp. She learns that when the crystals are hung in sunlight they act like a prism reflecting the colors of the rainbow. Polly’s childlike fascination with refracted light has a powerful effect on the cranky professor and later, on the widowed cantankerous Mrs. Snow. They both are transformed into cheerful, outgoing and pleasant people.

T he second t h i ng I’m rem i nded of when I see a prism is how God uses science to teach us about Himself and us. What color is light? White, of course! But when light passes through a prism it separates into a rainbow of colors. So what color is light? The color of the rainbow! The Bible tells us that from Adam and Eve came all the people on the face of the earth. The various shades of humanity; black, brown, white, cream, came from the shade of one couple. W hat color was Adam and Eve? Given the possible location of the Garden of Eden, they probably were black skinned. God is Light (1 John 1:5), and all of humanity is created in His image. What color is His image? Just look around you! All the shades of humanity are the refracted colors of His Light. If we would become like children and process this truth with child-like faith, we could cross off racism on our list of sin to overcome. Yet I find myself purchasing vehicles for f unct iona l pract ica lit y, I’ve l ived i n t he sa me house for years, I rarely i ndu lge i n fa st food, d o n’t c a r e a b o u t t h e latest fashions, purchase books….actual books, or get audio books from the librar y, and have never dow nloaded music, movies, or TV. However, true satisfaction is derived not from the act of receiving i nsta nt g rat i f icat ion, but f rom ea r n i ng you r gratification by your own mer it s, by creat i ng or accomplishing something of such immense propor t ion s it renders i nsta nt g rat i f icat ion impossible. The ha rder you have to work to achieve a goal, the greater t he s a t i s f a c t ion i s of attaining it. That said, we live in a time where we can enjoy t he benef its of i nsta nt g r a t i f i c a t i on , a s w e l l a s at ta i n i ng ou r goa ls t hrough t radit iona l methods. Paying Buyer’s Closing Costs MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate market, it is very common for buyers to ask that the seller pay for the buyer’s closing costs. Some sellers are baffled by this request and ot hers rea lize t hat this is the way many nonbuyers become buyers t o d a y. M a n y t i m e s , especially in the case of first time home buyers, they have enough funds for their down payment requ i rement, but ca n’t quite sw ing the closing costs. Since most of the loans today will allow for seller paid concessions, the buyers ask the sellers to pay this on their behalf. This is the case with FHA, VA and most conventional mortgages. Today we see more move up buyers ask for this concession as well. These more experienced buyers wou ld rat her finance the closing costs into the purchase price and free up their cash for upgrades once they move in. Let’s say that the cost of financing averages $5 per $1,000. If the buyer rolls the closing cost into their mortgage with an average closing cost concession of $3,000, they are increasing t heir mont hly pay ment by only $15 per month. Much of this is interest in the first 5 to 10 years of a 30 year mortgage, which in turn is a tax deduction for t he buyer. Encouraging Unity To Make Dr. King’s Dream A Living Legacy

Community members throughout the south suburban area gathered together last week in the spirit of unity to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 2016 MLK program co-sponsored by Thornton Township’s Human Relations Commission, High School District 205, and South Suburban College. “Love-Peace-Unity – The Mission Continues” showcased the talents of the students of High School District 205 through music, song, dance, dramatic presentation and community service. While paying tribute to Dr. King the program also focused on the need to carry on his vision by making a difference in the community, working to bring people together and speaking out against injustice. Keynote speaker Rev. Dr. Derrick B. Wells, senior minister of Christ Universal Temple in Chicago encouraged those in attendance to find what connects us, not what separates us and work toward the common good. “Dr. King was more than a dreamer. He acted on what could be possible. You need to bring his dream to fruition by acting upon it,” he said. “I want to challenge each of us to find someone to serve. Lift that person up and make him or her better than yourself. Society has become too individualistic. We must work together to transform our community because there is strength in numbers,” he said. Dr. Wells said mission is solely concerned with what you are here to do. He encouraged audience members to become activists and speak out against injustice because each person has the ability to make a difference. “As we celebrate the birthday of Dr. King we must make sure that his mission is a living legacy that we will use to transform our homes, our communities, our cities, and our country. If it can happen for one it can happen for all.” Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli said America still faces many challenges. “There is much work to
do to accomplish Dr. King’s dream. We continue to hear of violence and senseless killings. America is under siege,” he said. Last summer nine members of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina were gunned down in a crime of racial hatred. But instead of violence the response was one of forgiveness led by the members of the church. Supervisor Zuccarelli said township and community leaders had the opportunity to travel to Charleston and talk with members of the church. Initially they had planned to nominate the City of Charleston for the Nobel Peace Prize but after talking with members of the church it was apparent that the church was responsible for keeping the peace after the incident and officials of the city agreed. The township is sponsoring a petition drive to nominate Emanuel AME Church for the Nobel Peace Prize and encourages everyone to go online to www.nobelpeaceprizeforcharleston to sign the petition which will be submitted for nomination in early February. “Although we know there is much competition no one else has done more to promote peace than Emanuel AME Church in Charleston,” Zuccarelli said. First time attendee Gwen Bovan of Tinley Park said she was very impressed with the program. “It is important to recognize the contributions of our young people, Thornton Township and the community all working together,” she said. Bovan is a member of the Democratic National Committee’s Diversity Team, which she was appointed to in 2012 by President Obama. In keeping with the National Day of Service the South Suburban Chapters of Top Ladies of Distinction and the Top Teens of America conducted a food drive to benefit the Thornton Township Food Pantry. Will the Presidential Election Affect Investment Outlook? BOB KRYGSHELD We’re just a week away from the first caucuses and primaries, so presidential election season is in full swing. As a voter, you may be keenly interested in the election process. But as an investor, should you be concerned? If you take a look back, you might be somewhat encou raged over t he prospects of the financial m a rket s t h i s ye a r. I n the last 12 presidential election years, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has been up nine times a nd dow n ju st t h re e. So, election years must be good for the financial markets, right? Not nec essa r i ly. I n ever y year, the markets a re inf luenced by a variety of factors: interest rates, inflation, corporate profits, geopolitical events, economic grow th, even the weather. And it’s safe to say that 2016 will be no different. At this early stage of t he yea r, one could say that some of t hese factors, such a s cont inued low interest rates a nd a reasonably strong economy, might bode well for investors. But there’s a lot of 2016 ahead of us – and it’s notoriously d i f f ic u lt for a ny bod y, even so-ca lled experts, to accurately predict the market’s performance over a relatively short time, such as a year. St i l l , t h e m a r k e t ’s h istor y of pret t y good resu lt s i n president ia l election years may not be entirely random. For one thing, the W hite House is never the only office being contested; elections are a lso held for ever y c ong re s sion a l d i st r ic t a nd ma ny seats in t he Senate. Con se quent ly, du r i ng t he s e ele c t ion years, campaigning often ta kes precedence ov er le g i s l at i ng . accidentally sent a copy of the bill to the doctor to the patient – our client. The client discovered that the orthotics maker charged the doctor only $55. The doctor charged the client $850 for delivering the foot cushions to the patient. That is a $795 mark up for receiving and handing the custom foot orthotics to the patient. That is quite a m a r k-u p. S o m e h o w t hat seems w rong a nd exploitive by the doctor. Maybe some state a nd federa l laws shou ld be changed so that medical service providers can’t do that anymore.
I n Ja nu a r y 2 016 , I helped a client who visited me twice to resolve one Medicare related problem. The client is f rom Valparaiso, Indiana. T he f i rst problem w a s t h at a lt houg h he had sw itched Medicare supplement i n su r a nc e compa n ies on October 1, 2015, Me d ic a re d id not update his file until sometime in mid-January of 2016. All the medical claims that were sent to Medicare before the file was updated were not paid because Medica re sent the claims to the previous insurance company rather than the current one. Fi x ing t hat problem required t he t wo v isits – f i rst to a sk t hat t he cor rect ion be made a nd t hen to ma ke sure Medicare did correct the file. But, another “problem” was d iscovered. With strong ties to Calumet City, Mike Giglio opened the mini conference with an outline of his own and his families’ lifetime association with both Ingalls and Calumet City Plumbing. Following Giglio, Donahue spoke glowingly of the newly formed partnership between the U of C Hospitals based in Hyde Park, Chicago, and the Ingalls Health Care system founded in 1923 by the Ingalls family in the south suburbs. Endowments started by the Frederick Ingalls family are still helping fund the hospital agenda today 93 years later. At the heart of the new partnership is advanced research and state of the art facilities, clinical trials, advancements in cancer research, and the ability of locals to sign up for clinical trials, “something people should definitely do,” he advised. Little known is the fact that Ingalls Urgent Care facilities saw 35,000 visits in the recent past “more than many local ER’s see,” Hicks explained. At the Ingalls Family Care Centers in Ca lumet Cit y, Flossmoor, Tinley Park, Crestwood and South Holland in addition to the 37 acre main campus in H a r v e y, t h e f a m i l y c a r e c e nt e r s of f e r comprehensive outpatient care 25/7, while the Harvey hospital is licensed for 473 beds. Across the board the system boasts a medical staff of more than 450 physicians across 30 different medical and surgical specialties. This comprehensive care is going to get a real boost with the addition of the U of C doctors. “A partner that includes Nobel Laureate world class physicia ns, who w i l l be com i ng to Ingalls,” Kirk Johnson said. “This will be a game changer for the south suburbs.” The Ingalls Family Care Centers are ever evolving and hav ing to expand to accommodate a larger caseload as evidenced for example by the Calumet City property along 170th and Torrence adding offices yet further west from it’s original location on the corner. Much of the development and evolution concerns itself with an aging medical staff and the health care facility’s ability to keep pace with growing patient care and needs. Expect to hear more on this exciting news in the south suburbs as the year progresses. CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF LUCY MONICO: Lucy had a long and wonderful life, living until the age of 102, passing away January 13, 2016. She was the wife the late Duke Monico and the mother of Michael and the late Tom. She and her school chums met for over 60 years and she was the last surviving member of the Boniv ir Girls Hik ing Club. Active until the end. Lucy was honored by the East Side Chamber of Commerce in the fall of 2015 with many remembering her family contributions to t he communit y over t he years. A gracious and kind lady, she will be missed by all who knew and loved her. May Lucy Monico Rest in Peace.
