Climb ’Til Your Dream Comes True
ARLO KALLEMEYN by Helen Steiner Rice Often your tasks will be many, And more than you think you can do. Of ten t he road w i l l be rugged And the hills insurmountable, too. But always remember, The hills ahead Are never as steep as they seem, A nd w ith Faith in your heart Start upward And climb ‘til you reach your dream. For nothing in life that is worthy Is ever too hard to achieve If you have the courage to try it,
And you have the faith to believe. For faith is a force that is greater Than knowledge or power or skill, And many defeats turn to triumph I f y ou t r u s t i n G o d’s wisdom and will. For fa it h is a mover of mountains, There’s nothing that God cannot do, So, start out today with faith in your heart, And climb ‘til your dream comes true! Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES Hannah Cutter Locke never married. At the age of 62, she took some time to travel. While staying in Duxbury (a coastal town in Massachusetts), she w rote this letter to her much younger sister Mary Anne Peirce. These sisters were the granddaughters of C a pt a i n B e n j a m i n Locke, of Revolutionar y War fame. Duxbury, Aug. 31st, 1861 My ver y dear Sister (continued): We rode some t ime on the beach, it was very pleasant. We passed Cut River and land that used to belong to the g reat statesman, the late Daniel Webster, and as we came home he took us through the cemetery, tis quite a large one and some places laid out quite plentily. Now don’t you think I had ought to be ver y thankful to God for all these blessings to what I enjoy so much, and were I to have my choice I would far rather be here, than at Chelsea where all is bustle and excitement, set aside the cost and you know that is an important item with your great Big Sister. I hope you are not sick, the reason of your not writing. I have had a letter from Delmont since I have been here. He writes that Sarah is improving. Delmont says

And now my dear Sister I must close or I fear I shall not get this into the office tonight as it is some distance from here. Give my love to all your own dear family and accept a large share from your affectionate Sister. PS . I h av e w r it t e n two letters today and feel rather tired. Random Reads BRANDI SMITS I’ll Give You the Sun By Jandy Nelson Tw i n s J u d e a n d Noa h a re ex t remely close although they are completely dif ferent in terms of their interests. Jude loves su r f i ng a nd h a ng s out w it h older, thrill-seeking boys while wearing her daring d resses a nd br ig ht red lipstick. Noah is happier on the outside observing everything and creating pieces of art inspired by all he sees. Ever y thing is up for grabs in t heir world. Often they would ba r ter ent it ies such as the sun, moon, or stars in order to get what they truly wanted. It was their thirteenth year when Jude started trying to express herself w ith her unique fashion designs and her sa nd sc u lpt u re s dow n at t he beach. Du r i ng t h i s s a me t i me, Noa h met a new boy i n t he n e i g h b or h o o d w h o i s obsessed w it h t he sk y. It’s this new relationship where Noah confirms his suspicions that he prefers boys over g i rls. Noa h and Jude both apply for a prest ig ious loca l a r t school t hat w i l l a l low t hem e ac h to e x pr e s s themselves in their own way. Unfortunately this summer of firsts did not end a s happi ly for t he twins as it started. Three years later Nelson picks up the story of Jude a nd Noa h. The t w o h av e endu r e d a n
unspea kable t ragedy a nd now a re ba rely recog ni zable as t he sa me people we met three years ago. Nelson does not explain initially what happened t hat transformed the siblings in such a way that their life paths have drastically cha nged. Nelson tel ls us t he stor y i n pieces, a lternat ing bet ween Noa h’s p er s p e c t i v e at age t hirteen and Jude’s perspective at age sixteen. No a h , t h e a r t- c r a z e d teen, is now an at hlete w it h a girlfriend. Jude ha s t a ken to rejec t i ng the entirety of the male species in exchanged for an unhealthy obsession w ith her grandmother’s ghost and the journal of superstitions that she left behind. A s t or y t h a t c ou ld have been told i n a convent iona l way is instead unveiled through a lter nat i ng, non-l i nea r perspectives that set the reader up for a conclusion that is somewhat shocking while easily realized. The cha racter development of bot h Jude a nd Noa h may seem jarring when on l y re ad i ng t he f i r st few chapters, but Nelson slowly reveals every event that resulted in the older ver sion s of t he t w i n s. I h ig h ly recom mend t his t it le. N e l s o n ’s i nter pret at ion of w hat could have been a boring, familiar stor y is almost impossible to set down.

Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

What Do Low Oil Prices Mean for Investors? BOB KRYGSHELD A s you’ve no doubt noticed, your trips to the gas station have been a lot more pleasant these past several months. There’s not muc h dou bt t h at low oil prices have been welcome to you as a driver. But when oil is cheap, is that good for you as an investor? There’s no clea r-cut answer. But consider the following effects of low oil prices: • Positive impact on economy — W hen you spend less at the gas pump, relative to recent years, what will you do with your savings? Like most people, you’ll probably spend most of it on goods and services. If you multiply the amount of your increased spending by the millions of other Americans who are also saving money on gas, you can see that you and your fellow consumers are likely adding billions of dollars to the economy. Typically, a strong economy is also good for t he f i na ncia l markets — and for t he people who invest in them. • Dif ferent results for dif ferent sectors — Different sectors within t he f i na nc ia l ma rket s may respond in different ways to low oil prices, even if the overall effect is generally positive. For exa mple, businesses such as consumer goods compa n ies a nd auto ma nufacturers may r e s p on d f a v or a b l y t o cheaper oil and gas. But the picture might be quite a bit different for energy companies. You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to adjust your investment portfolio in response to low oil prices. In fact, you may well want to consult with your financial professional to determine which moves might make sense for your individual situation. Yet there’s actually a bigger le s s on t o b e le a r n e d here: Don’t overreact to temporary developments. The recent decline in oil 2 bdrm. prices has certainly had an economic impact, but no one can predict how long these prices will stay low or what other factors may arise that would affect the financial markets. That’s why you can’t reconfigure you r por t fol io ba sed on p a r t ic u l a r e v ent s , whatever they may be — oil price drops, interestrate fluctuations, political squabbles at home, natural disasters in faraway lands, and so on. If you can keep from being overly influenced by specific events, you may be able to gain at least two key benefits: First, by not making trades constantly in reaction to the headlines of the day, you can avoid piling up heavy fees and commissions —costs that ca n reduce t he ret u r n rate on your investments. Second, you’ll find that if you aren’t always thinking about what’s going on in the world today, you can focus you r i nvest ment ef for t s more i ntensely on where you wa nt to be tomorrow. The most successf u l i nvestors set long-term goals and don’t focus on factors they cannot control, such a s oi l pr ices, i nterestrate cha nges or ot her economic events. Instead, t he s e i nv e s t or s m a k e adjustments, as necessary, to accommodate changes in their goals as well as ot her changes, such as revisions in tax laws — but they basically stick to their same approach for the long term. So be aware of low oil prices, but don’t get so “pu mped” about t hem that you sludge up your c on si stent i nve st ment strategy — because that strategy has the energy to keep you moving toward your important objectives. Big Idea?
KEVIN BRADLEY There seems to be no end to new workout videos a nd exercise mach ines on the market, especially preva lent on telev ision infomercia ls. Each one trying to be unique. Many of t hem unsurprisingly si m i la r. E ach w it h it s ow n infomercia l tr y ing to convince us that this is the holy-grail that will transform our bodies into t he a ma zi ng shape we desire them to be in, some even promising to do this in an impressively limited amount of time, with such little effort that anyone can do it. Of course there are also the magic pills that w ill melt away the pounds, and target t he difficult areas. Each year m i l l ion s a nd m i l l ion s of dolla rs a re spent on t he s e v ide o s , de v ic e s a nd supplement s. T he question is: What, if any of them really work? T h i s i s n ot r o c k e t science. If you consume more ca lories than you bu r n, you w i l l ga i n weight. If you work out a nd feed you r body pr op er nut r it ion, y ou will cause it to respond to t he s e ac t ion s. T he older we get, t he lower our metabolism becomes the less calories we burn. Gradually decreasing your caloric intake as you age can help you to maintain y o u r b o d y. Yo u a l s o need to ingest a proper ba la nce of nutrition. A da ily multiv ita min can be helpful, or a bowl of Total cereal, which has a hundred percent of the US RDA of several vitamins and also a few grams of whole grains. valuable asset. Without it, your income producing potentia l becomes diminished. Caring for a sick loved one can have t he s a me de v a s t at i n g effect. I’m noticing there seems to be times in this v ol a t i le s o c ie t y w he n peoples’ ability to create a n income becomes depleted. Some people rega i n t hei r i ncome producing potential. Some never do. As a societ y, Americans are considered to be poor savers, relat ively spea k i ng, a s compared with citizens of other first world nations. In order to prov ide security for yourself and your loved ones you must distinguish yourself from the pack and become an av id saver, diversif y ing your assets into a variety of d i f ferent t y pes of i n v e s t m e nt s . You r financial health remains secondar y but becomes nea rly as impor ta nt as your physical health. The two become symbiotic in the sense that damage to one can damage the other. I read years ago that rich people insure their f i na ncia l wel lbei ng by creating multiple income streams. Instead of just relying on one source of income, t hey put t heir money to work creating more money. Ut i l i z i ng t h is st rateg y i f one stream dries up, income continues to accrue from ot hers. Th is shou ld be your goal as well. W ish i ng you hea lt h and wea lt h…good luck, K.B. I was recently talking to a couple of you ng g uys about t he scene i n t he movie featuring the actor Ving Rhames’ character in the 2001 film Baby Boy. He was ma k ing a speech using t his concept about “Guns & Butter”. The two young men expressed to me how much they enjoyed the movie but they didn’t understand what Guns & Butter meant. I g ave t hem a s hor t t a l k a bout macroeconomics concerning government’s decision on investment in militar y spending or spending for investment of goods. They told me they never learned t hat in high school or college. I told them I only know about it because I took a class in economics some yea rs ago. The t wo young men went on to tell me that every time we have discussions concerning life they realize the schools they attended didn’t teach them much and that they learn more from me when we have our talks. I’m flattered of course. But I grow melancholy to think that our school system is not teaching like they once did. W hen I w a s i n g r a m ma r school language such as Spanish or French was taught. By the time I made it to high school I was exposed to more foreign languages and math from algebra to trigonometry. History was boring but we learned the different periods of time leading up to the creation of the United States government. This makes me wonder where is our government really investing its dollar?

Defense is always needed. But what about the investment in our educational system? W hen JFK back in 1961 put out t he challenge to the American people, we will win the space race. Young people began to enroll in institutions of higher learning to become scientist and engineers. Kennedy challenged the American people to put a man on the moon and return him safely to earth by the end of this century. The rest is history. Man landed on the moon eight years later. So why am I so pensive when it comes to the education of young people? I don’t see the intellectual curiosity among many young or old. Does the government need to invest more in human capital when it comes to education? Yes. Do we wait on government to do what we know is necessary in educating ourselves? No. Guns or butter? Butter will make you fat but having the proper education will prevent you from becoming fat and a balance can be achieved when it comes to our defense. Starting now we can begin to educate the young by encouraging them to read more. I know it sounds old fashioned but its really that simple. Reading expands the mind and it is one of the true exercises for the mind. Whatever you need to know is in a book. Well, I guess an ebook too. Better yet, let them Google it. They’ll more than likely find it but they’ll still have to read. What’s that old saying? Reading is fundamental.

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be praised, adored, and glorified throughout the whole world now and forever. Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put my trust in You. Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, pray for us. Munster Theatre Company Presents Hunchback of Notre Dame The Munster Theatre Company of Munster High School is pleased to present its winter production of the Craig W. Stump’s stage adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel, Hunchback of Notre Dame. Produced by Larry A Brechner and Carol Lynn Brechner, this full-length, student-directed production will feature co-directors Allison Hemingway and Hayley Kwasneiwski, and Assistant Director Thomas Speranza. Two narrators, Souff lé (Rohan Chatterjee) and his hyperactive younger sister, Cheese (Claire LeMonnier), relate this adaptation of Victor Hugo’s French literary classic. Quasimodo (Trey DeLuna), a deformed but lovable man, has spent his entire life within the walls of the cathedral of Notre Dame. With some urging from two zany nuns (Alex Raycroft & Taylor Merkel), he attends the Festival of Fools. Though he is crowned the King of Fools (the ugliest person at the festival), his guardian, Archdeacon Frollo (Billy McDunn), is enormously displeased with Quasimodo. Frollo forbids Quasimodo to leave Notre Dame again. Also at the festival are La Esmeralda (Anna Bilse), the gypsy queen, Clopin Trouillefou (Jonathan Neeley) the court jester, and Pierre Gringoire (Ethan Courtney), a playwright. Frollo is

her, sending the guards after the gypsy queen to capture her. Both Quasimodo and Gringoire attempt to save La Esmeralda, resulting in Quasimodo’s two-day punishment in the town square without food or water and Gringoire’s narrow escape from hanging by the peasants’ Court of Miracles. La Esmeralda helps them both, giving Quasimodo water and saving Gringoire from hanging by marrying him. Frollo, desperately jealous, stabs Gringoire and frames La Esmeralda. Though La Esmeralda is sentenced to death, Quasimodo saves her, taking her into the cathedral of Notre Dame and sanctuary. Frollo again tries to attack La Esmeralda and Gringoire, who has survived the stabbing, but falls to his death from the top of Notre Dame. Then it is up to the King (David Green) and Queen of France (Vivian Reba) to determine La Esmeralda’s guilt or innocence. Hunchback of Notre Dame will feature a cast of over thirty Theatre Company veterans and newcomers, and will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday February 5, 6, and 7, 2015 at 7pm in the Munster Auditorium. All Tickets are $5 at the door and are available at the Auditorium Box Office on performance nights or visit our web site at www.munaud.org.

MIKE BUDER It is in most people’s nature to look for a “great dea l”. In some cultures ba r ga i n i ng bet we en a seller of something and the buyer is an anticipated procedure of the sale. It is not unheard of to try and get the price of something lowered, even in major stores, but t here is no personal connection by the salesperson with the item being sold in stores. Now you go to s om e on e’s h om e , t h e most persona l of a l l t hei r possessions. You automatically assume that the house is overpriced, even though your agent may tel l you t hat t hey have looked at the comps and the home seems to be priced correctly. You can certainly afford the listed price. The house fits all your needs and you love it, but you cannot bring yourself to start w ith a reasonable offer. You talk to your agent and tell them what you are willing to pay for the property, which is beyond reasonable. Your agent advises you that the offer would not be worth the paper upon which it is written and you are going to insult the seller. So you wait. You come back a few weeks later a nd decide to make an offer a little higher than before, but still too low. This house has been sitting on the market for a while, so you are sure t hat t he seller is going to be even more “reasonable”. T hey a re going to fall over and kiss your feet. But, as happens so many times, Murphy’s Law of home buying kicks in. There is another offer Calumet City 2-bdrm. Apartment. Located 1 block from Lansing. $750/mo. + security + credit check. No pets. Seniors welcome. For more info. 708-868-2590 A p t . f o r re n t : D o l t o n , 3-bdrm. apt. has hardwood floors. Heat/Water included. 15214 S. Woodlawn. being considered, maybe all cash, and much higher than you were going to of fer. Had you made a reasonable offer when you f irst considered buy ing a nd by “rea sonable” I me a n one t h at w ou ld encou rage a cou nter offer, you may have been successful in buying the propert y you obv iously love. Now, even if they look at your offer, chances are both offers will be bid up close to the asking price. Rea ltors a re professionals who know the market. If a house is overpriced, often it will be adjusted down to or near its market price. At some point you have to realize that there is a value to the home that you cannot go below. Back to Murphy’s Law of home buying. The minute you want to make an of fer on a propert y, another buyer will come out of t he wood work , especially on a property that has been sitting on t he ma rket for a whi le and definitely when you have been hanging back. It never fails.
