GOAL SETTING WITH INTENTION Set yourself up for a healthy + happy year by setting realistic goals that you can stick to. With a plan in place, you're more likely to keep your resolutions and goals. Here are a few steps to get you started: 1. Set a specific goal. If it's weight loss, determine how much you want to lose and set a by-when date. 2. Come up with a plan. Write it down. Then determine how you will navigate obstacles. Having a detailed plan in place will help keep you on track. 3. Be specific about why you want to achieve your goal. When you know the why, it's easier to motivate yourself. Have a visual of what you want to achieve; if it's weight loss, pull out a photo of where you want to be. 4. Share your goal. Tell your family, friends and coworkers and share on social media. They'll cheer you on and motivate you! 5. Be accountable. Have a friend or family member as your go-to buddy to help keep you accountable. Share with them daily. 6. Stop making excuses. Everyone is busy. Stop making excuses about why you shouldn't and instead figure out how you can make it happen. A personal trainer or group fitness classes can help you start! 7. Decide that you are worth it. Because you are! This is your year to shine and achieve that goal!

K e n n e d y ’s e n t i r e understanding of her life so far completely changed after the sudden passing of her mother. The death was r u led a resu lt of a cardiac episode. With no other family aside from an estranged aunt she barely k n o w s , K e n n e d y opt s for attending a boarding school far, far away from home. Maybe she ca n distance herself from a life that no longer exists. A life in which Kennedy swears she saw a ghost in a cemetery when chasing her cat. T h is wa s t he pla n; or at least t hat’s what Kennedy t hought. Shor t ly before she was suppos e d to le ave for school, Kennedy noticed her cat acting bizarrely. With no warning, Kennedy is suddenly being attacked by a n unseen entit y as well as her cat. Before she could respond to the shock of what is happening, two boys burst into the house a nd rescue Ken nedy from the invisible attack. The boys, twin brothers named Jared and Lukas, rush Kennedy into a van a nd dr ive of f f rom t he house with looks like the location of an explosion. The brothers take Kennedy to a warehouse where she meets t wo more teens, Priest and Alara. Once at the warehouse, it is revealed that the five

teens are the next in line to represent an old secret order called The Legion. The five members of The Legion are responsible for dispatching ghosts and detaining demons. One nasty demon in particular i s re spon sible for t he recent deaths, including Kennedy’s mother. The f ive must ut i l i ze t hei r spec ia l sk i l l s i n order to locate the demon and trap him in order to save their lives. By following i nst r uct ions a nd clues left by their relatives and using Pr iest’s specia l ly const r ucted weapons a nd A la ra’s wa rds a nd sy mbols, t he f ive must locate pieces of a device that promises to make the demon v isible and able to trap. Kennedy is not sure whether she fits into The Legion, but she is not about to allow herself to be a liability either. Unbre ak a bl e i s t he first in a new series by the co-author of the “Beautiful Creatures” series. Fans of the TV show Supernatural will notice the similarities bet ween t he show a nd Unbreakable i nclud i ng t he weapons of choice and even the characters. The act ion is engag ing and fast-paced although the romance involving a love triangle is a bit forced and unnecessary. All in all, Unbreakable is a great read for those looking for a scare.

Question: I am planning to open a small business in 2014. What is the simplest type of business structure? Answer: A sole proprietorship is generally considered the easiest type of business structure. Unlike partnerships, limited liability corporations (LLC) and corporations, sole proprietorship does not require you to file annual reports or obtain and renew a state business license. A lawyer can provide other options and help you decide which alternative is right for your situation. Question: May a person drive in Illinois while visiting from another country? Answer: Yes, if the driver has a valid driver’s license from his or her own country. Note that an International Driving Permit is not considered valid in the State of Illinois.

Question: Is there a cost involved to obtain an Order of Protection? Answer: In filing an Order of Protection, you are asking a judge to protect you and your family members from your abuser. No court fee is necessary. Furthermore, the local Sheriff’s office will not charge a fee to deliver a copy of your court papers to the respondent. Help Rescue Cats Come to Sheffields any Monday in January to help the new local cat rescue, Cats of Saint Francis. You can stop in for breakfast, lunch or dinner, and 10% of your bill will be donated to this rescue. Restaurant hours are 8 AM to 9 PM. You can enjoy a delicious meal, and save a cat at the same time! Sheffields Restaurant is located at 1027 Sheffield, Dyer. CSF mission is to help end cat overpopulation by taking them off the street and backyards. They are taken to the vet, “fixed”, vaccinated and put in foster care until a forever home can be found. We are grateful to Sheffields for this opportunity to continue our mission. Come out and bring your friends! For more information on the rescue contact Diana at 219769-1859.

Have a Heart. Donate Blood. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, except when you’re talking about blood donors. Ever y day, hospital patients depend on steady and consistent blood donations from volunteer donors for the blood they may need for ongoing and emergency medical care. Since February is American Heart Month, it’s a great time to put your heart into a worthwhile cause: donating blood at an American Red Cross blood drive to help hospital patients who require blood transfusion. “Blood donations help many types of patients, including cardiac patients who are one of the leading users of blood and blood products,” said Tracy Fox, Communications Manager, with the Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region of the Red Cross. “When individuals roll up their sleeve, they help build the blood supply. This is important anytime, but especially during the cold, wintry months when blood donations tend to decline. It’s important that the blood is on the shelf when hospital patients need a transfusion.” Since 1963, the President of the United States has proclaimed February as American Heart Month. “Donating blood, and sharing your good health w ith others less fortunate, is a great way to observe this annual event,” Fox stated. “We’re asking more people, young and old alike, to have a

heart and give blood this February. If you’re healthy and can give, your donation can help make a difference.” UPCOMING AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES: • Saturday, Feb. 1, from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Lowell Public Library in the Program Room, located at 1505 E. Commercial Ave. in Lowell. • Monday, Feb. 3, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Tradebe Treatment and Recycling, located at 4343 Kennedy Ave. in East Chicago. • Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 1:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Highland Parks & Recreation Center in Classrooms #108 & 109, located at 2450 Lincoln St. in Highland. • Thursday, Feb. 6, from 12:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at St. Matthias Church in the Hall, located at 101 Burell Drive in Crown Point. • Saturday, Feb. 8, from 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. at John Wood Elementary School in the Hall, located at 6100 E. 73rd Ave. in Merrillville. This is a Pint Size Heroes blood drive. • Sunday, Feb. 9, from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in the Hall, located at 218 S. Court St. in Crown Point. • Monday, Feb. 10, from 1:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the VFW Post 717 in the Hall, located at 10400 W. 93rd Ave. in St.

How to Donate Blood To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org for more information. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission in Indiana and Ohio), meet weight and height requirements (110 pounds or more, depending on their height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Individuals should bring their Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID when they come to donate.

Saved Disabled Client Over $1,000 WOODROW WILCOX I r e c e i v e d a le t t e r from a disabled client of this insurance agency on January 13, 2014. I went to work on it right away. A loca l hospita l wa s demanding pay ment of $1,187.15. I re v ie we d t he bi l l and phoned the client’s i nsu ra nce compa ny to lea r n w hat it k new of this bill to our client. It reported that Medicare never sent t he cla i m s information to it. That was not the fault of our d isabled client, her insurance company, or the hospital. It was the fault of Medicare. In a let ter to t he hospita l, I ex pla i ned t h i s a nd a sked for it s cooperat ion to send cer ta i n cr it ica l cla i ms information to t he i nsu ra nce compa ny so t hat t he bi l l cou ld be processed a nd pa id i n accorda nce w it h t he i nsu ra nce pol ic y. I’m sure that the hospital will cooperate because it has cooperated in the same way so many other times when a similar problem faced one of our clients and I helped. All the help that I gave to the disabled client was FREE OF CHARGE. The

ow ners, managers, and sta f f of t h is i nsu ra nce a genc y rea l l y do c a re about our disabled and senior citizen clients who use this agency to select t hei r Med ica re related insurance policies. We do what we can to help our cl ient s avoid f i na ncia l harm when someone else in the Medicare system ma ke s a m i st a ke t hat cou ld cost ou r cl ient s money. Does your insurance agency give this high level of service to its clients? If not, why not? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox i s t he s en ior me d ic a l bi l l case worker at Sen ior Ca re Insu ra nce Services. That agency has grown to four offices in Merrillville, Schererville, Munster, and Valparaiso. Wilcox has saved clients of t hat agenc y over one m i l l ion dol la rs by correcting medica l bill errors that were caused by mista kes in t he Med ic a re s y stem. Frerichs Says People Want Jobs, But Co-Sponsors Legislation To Drive Them Away Frerichs told a Champaign audience that, “…a lot of people who have lost their jobs or looking at losing their houses, they’re looking around for help out there.” Yet, Senator Frerichs ser ves as a chief co-sponsor of the proposed amendment to the Illinois Constitutional amendment to scrap the state’s flat income tax and implement a progressive one. This switch would be harmful to the small businesses which create most jobs in Illinois and disastrous to the overall economic climate as Illinois struggles to retain, not to mention attract, large employers. T h is week, one of Sen. Frer ich s’ Democratic colleagues, Sen. Frerichs has been one of the most vocal backers of changing Il linois’ Const itut ion to impose a progressive income tax, even though it would hike taxes yet again on most Illinois taxpayers,” said AFP Illinois State Director David From. “If he truly wants to help people looking for jobs, he should oppose misguided policies like the progressive income tax that will only drive more jobs and families from the state.” In announcing his campaign for Illinois Treasurer on Wednesday, Sen. Frerichs should stop advocating policies that will drive even more businesses and families from our state, and embrace policies that will restore Illinois as the economic engine of the Midwest.”

Service Awards for Seton Students

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question : I recent ly ret ired a nd my husband will retire in a few years. We currently make more than $4,000 monthly together and already own our 1940 home of 1,600 sq. ft. It’s an old-fashioned home, but in good condition. We have updated much of our home. My husband wants to sell and buy something larger and I want to remodel rather than have a $150 to $200,000 dollar larger home and high monthly payments again. Within our area the homes are selling at $60 to $90,000 and I believe that we can sell for $89,000. I want to stay and he wants to sell. What do think we should do? Answer: You now have a current monthly income -- but what happens after he retires? W het her to move or not move is a personal decision. Alderman Beale and Mayor Rogers discuss south side development. ___________________________________________________

Dolton Mayor Riley Rogers joined US Senators Durbin, Kirk and Congresswoman Kelly as they announced plans to introduce federal legislation to designate the historic area a national park, creating the Pullman National Historical Park on the city’s South Side. “C r e a t i n g t h e P u l l m a n Na t i o n a l Historica l Park w ill a llow the Nationa l Park Service to better represent America’s cultural and ethnic diversity while providing a boost to the local economy,” U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said. Durbin, Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and U.S. Rep Robin Kelly (D- Ill.) appeared together Friday to unveil the proposed legislation, which they said would be a boon to the area — bringing tourists and creating jobs. “This bill is for the Pullman community, where countless residents have worked heroically over decades to preserve and restore this national treasure,” Kelly said. “And this bill is for future generations of Americans, who will one day visit Pullman 2 Bears chairs, from Solider Field renovation in 2001. Blue color. $300 obo. Very heavy. Must bring help to carry and large vehicle. Call 708-204-3573

and learn about the vital role it played in our nation’s labor history and civil rights history.” The Pullman site was developed by industrialist George Pullman in 1880 and was the first American industrial town. The site has played a major role in labor history and in civil rights history. The neighborhood also is architecturally significant. It is a l ready desig nated a nat iona l historic landmark district, a state landmark and a city landmark. On Friday, the National Trust for Historic Preservation declared Pullman a national treasure. The Pullman Park would be the second national park in the state — the first was Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield. The bill will be introduced Monday in the Senate and the House of Representatives, Kelly’s office said. Mayor Rogers continues to reach out to State and Federal elected officials to bring development to Chicago’s Southside including Dolton, Illinois.

SNOW FENCES...

What ever happened to the snow fences we used to see along the highways? True, they weren’t very pretty, but they sure helped in keeping the roads clear from the blowing snow. That was especially important on the rural roads. Maybe we should go back to some of the tried and true solutions.

LOST DOG...

Shepherd Dog with the Pink Collar. To the owner of the loose dog with a pink collar – I don’t know if you’re allowing your dog to run freely, or if you lost your dog, or if you abandoned her? All I do know is she’s been running around Lansing and Munster for weeks now in this bitter cold weather. There are many people worried about this dog and feeling helpless. So if you’re allowing her to run, you need to stop! If you’ve lost her, then please report it to the shelters and Animal Control so they can work with you on getting her home. If you’ve abandoned her, shame on you because it’s downright cruel. She’s scared and not coming to anyone trying to help her.

HIGHER TAXES IN ILLINOIS...

Why would anyone want to vote for higher taxes in Illinois? We are taxed higher than most other states - especially Indiana. Now Illinois politicians want more - they want you to believe that a ‘Progressive Tax’ will solve all our problems. It will solve their problem since it is a sneaky trick to raise taxes on you and me. Urge your elected officials to VOTE NO’ on the progressive tax plan. Progressive tax proponents hope to get a bill through the Illinois legislature and to voters on the November 2014 ballot. Remember they told us that the 67% income tax increase was ‘temporary’. Yeah right! Fool taxpayers once shame on you - fool taxpayers twice shame on us. Speak Out is your chance to express your opinion, anonymously. You can e-mail us at general@myshopper.biz. Please keep your comments as short as possible. Opinions expressed are strictly those of the author.

Program Encourages Young People To Carry On Dr. King’s Vision

Community members throughout south suburban area gathered together last week to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a program co-sponsored by High School District 205, Thornton Township’s Human Relations Commission, and South Suburban College. “Living the Dream…College, Careers, Commitment to Excellence” showcased the talents of the students of High School District 205 through music, dance, dramatic presentations and community service. While paying tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. the program also focused the need to move forward to carry on his vision. Keynote speaker Bishop Lance Davis from New Zion Covenant Church in Dolton said Dr. King was a visionary – a man that thought we could do better. He fought against the Vietnam War after witnessing firsthand the atrocities that were occurring. One year before he was murdered during a speech in New York Dr. King said, “I have come to the conclusion that silence is equated to betrayal. If I shut my mouth today there is something wrong with me.” Growing up the west side of the city Bishop Davis said he had to run away from gangs. He remembered hearing Dr. King speak in Chicago and was inspired by him to do better. “I wasn’t supposed to make it,” he said. In 2008 Bishop Dav is said brow n and black youth constituted 16 percent of the youth population yet they were 52 percent of juvenile crimes, 58 percent of murders, 67 percent of robberies, 37 percent of rapes, 38 percent of weapons charges, 45 percent of stolen vehicles, 33 percent of property crimes, and 52 percent of all juveniles transferred to an adult criminal court. “It hasn’t gotten better. What’s wrong with us as a people,” he asked. “We can do better than this. Our young people must strive to be the brilliant minds they used to be – the brilliant minds that sat down at lunch counters so we had to serve them. I have a vision that carries on the vision of Dr. King. Speaking to the young people Bishop Davis said don’t just keep Dr. King as a dreamer, use him as a visionary that will serve to inspire you to do better. “As we live together and merge together we need to see that

all of us are better than that.” In keeping with the National Day of Service the South Suburban Chapters of Top Ladies of Distinction and the Top Teens of America conducted a food drive to benefit the Thornton Township Food Pantry. Top Ladies of Distinction is a non-profit humanitarian organization whose primary purpose is to serve youth and adults and is the sponsor for Top Teens of America. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli thanked the organizations for their efforts. When the food pantry opened 10 years ago it was serving 100 families per month. Today it serves 4,000 per month. In closing Supervisor Zuccarelli said, “No man or woman

The program showcased the talents of many District 205 students. Performances included the District 205 MLK Honor Choir, District 205 Honor Band, Thornwood High School student Binta Manar, Thornridge Speech team members Tiera Sterling and Corey Jackson and Thornton High School’s New Generation of Men Steppers. _________________________________

is born into greatness. They have to consciously decide what is wrong in the world. Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of those exceptional people who believed that the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience but where he stands at times of challenges and controversies. My question to all of you is where do you stand and what will you do to help us,” he said. “I choose to follow the words and actions of Dr. King. There is still a lot to do and together we can do it. We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means. We need to know each other better so that together we can make a difference.”

Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES D o y ou k no w ho w many vacation days you have off work this year? I k now how ma ny my husband has! That’s for sure. At the end of WWII, it wasn’t vacation days that people counted. It was points. Every U.S. soldier received points based on time and battles fought. Eighty-five was the golden number. To a wife on the home front, if her husband had eighty-five points, her hopes were high that he would soon return home. Master Sergeant Robert Buetow of the 54th Armored Field Artiller y Batta lion in W W II, answers this question in detail to his wife: Tuesday, June 12, 1945 Lu darling, N o m a il f r o m y ou today, but yesterday I got three one-page V-mails from the 27th, 29th and 31st. Hey you ! You didn’t even congratulate me for getting the Bronze Star Medal—shame on you! I’m sorta’ proud of that. Maybe I can explain just where I got 87 points. You see on May 12, the day on which all the figuring was reckoned from, I had 47 months in the Army so that gave me 47 points. I had 20 months oversees, so that gave me another 20 points and made the total 67.

Then we are credited with 3 campaigns so I get 3 battle stars—five points each—which brings the total up to 82. Add five points for my medal and that makes it 87. We’ll probably receive credit for one more an d m a yb e t w o m ore campaigns, so that will give me either 5 or 10 more points and make my total 92 or 97, which isn’t bad at all. However, it’s liable to take quite awhile before we all get to come home ‘cause the discharges are supposed to be spread over a period of a year. Still, I might be lucky a n d g e t h om e s o on — you never can tell how those things work out. A lot depends on what the status of our division is— whether it will go to the Pacific, be part of the army of occupation, or be sent home as surplus. Naturally if the division goes to the Pacific...to be continued next week. What’s Your Big Idea? KEVIN BRADLEY

The “Real Life” Real Estate Column www.myshopper.biz/columnists/

Real Estate Values in 2014…I know what will happen! ARTHUR V. VEAL IV There has been plenty of speculation about what will happen with the real estate markets in 2014. All this talk about improving ma rket s a nd decl i n i ng foreclosures is making my head spin. I analyzed a lot of data and here is what I see happening this year. Over the last 2 years rea l estate va lues have i ncrea sed f rom t hei r record lows a nd if you read t his a rticle I have given my opinion as to why. Corporate and large investment buyers have propped up many markets a nd m a de it s e e m a s though we were in a real estate recovery. Now the ba n k s have seen w hat these investors are doing a nd t he y h ave slowe d the number of properties that they bring to market f rom foreclosure which slows down the inventory on the market and causes these large buyers to fight for t he fewer dea ls on the market. These larger investors fight the regular buyers for houses and in turn the market price of property increases. What is happening now is that s i nc e t he pr ic e s h av e increased these corporate bu y e r s c a n’t m a k e a s much money when they buy homes. This is okay for right now but over this year be prepared for more and more corporate buyers to leave the single-family i nvest ment busi ness. This is good and bad for

Electrical

homebuyers like you who want to buy a house. I t ’s g o o d f o r y o u because you may finally get an opportunity to buy one of those foreclosures for a cheaper pr ice. If you have t r ied to buy a f or e c lo s e d pr op e r t y recently then you probably had ex per ienced t he pain of being beaten by a corporate investor. Now w it h c or por ate bu yer s pulling back you will get more opportunity to buy a property at a good price. On the other hand it’s bad for the market because you will see a plateau in home values. The values will remain pretty stable a nd pr oba bl y w on’t increase ver y much for most of the year. So if you are selling a home don’t expect values to continue to increase too much more this year. Overa l l, t his w i l l be a stagnant year for real estate in my opinion. I don’t t h i n k pr ices w i l l drop but I don’t see them steadily increasing either. Until next week…. Art Veal is managing partner of We Buy Houses Home S er v ic e s L L C . How Great God Is! ANNA M. CAISON For the second time in my life I had the glorious opportunity to shovel snow. Standing under the night sky with shovel in hand I ga zed up at the t w ink ling stars thoughtfully placed in a navy blue heaven. “Oh Lord, what a beautiful world you gave us to enjoy,” I spoke aloud. “How marvelous are the wondrous beauty of the universe and the earth draped in glistening white snow. “ As I began to shovel the words of an old hymn came to mind. It was here in the cool crispness of the evening I communed with the Lord. How Great Thou Art by Stuart K. Hine O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made, I see the stars; I hear the rolling thunder, T hy p ow er t h r u- out t he u n i v er s e displayed! Refrain: Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee; How great Thou art, how great Thou art! Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee; How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

Verse 2: When thru the woods and forest glades I wander And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees, When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze. Verse 3: And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in---That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin! Verse 4: When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart! Then I shall bow in humble adoration And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art! For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

Paying Buyer’s Closing Costs MIKE BUDER In today’s real estate market, it is very common for buyers to ask that the seller pay for the buyer’s closi ng cost s. Some sellers are baffled by this request and others realize that this is the way many non-buyers become buyers today. Many times, especially in the case of first time home buyers, they have enough funds for their down payment requ i rement, but ca n’t quite sw ing the closing costs. Since most of the loans today will allow for seller paid concessions, the buyers ask the sellers to pay this on their behalf. This is the case with FHA, VA and most conventional mortgages. Today we see more move up buyers ask for this concession as well. These more experienced buyers wou ld rat her finance the closing costs into the purchase price and free up their cash for upgrades once they move in. Let’s say that the cost of financing averages $5 per $1,000. If the buyer r ol l s t he c lo si ng c o s t into their mortgage with an average closing cost c onc e s s ion of $ 3,0 0 0, they are increasing their monthly payment by only $15 per mont h. Much of this is interest in the first 5 to 10 years of a 30 year mortgage, which in turn is a ta x deduction for the buyer. It makes more sense to f i na nce

that money, free up their cash and have a larger tax write off at the end of each year. As long as the net proceeds are acceptable to t he seller, t he seller c onc e s sion s s hou ld n’t matter. Many times a first time homebuyer would not be able to purchase a home w it hout t h is assistance. If a buyer’s or ig i na l of fer is not acceptable, I will usually cou nsel my sel ler to counter offer the price and not the seller concessions. If the buyer needs help w it h t he closi ng cost s (c onc e s sion s ) don’t t r y to el i m i nate t hem. Just counter back at an acceptable purchase price leaving the concessions in place and determine the net. It’s all about the f u nds t he sel ler wa l k s away with at the closing table – regardless of how you get there. COLDWELL BANKER ‘KICK’ OFF 2014 NEW YEAR: With their usual gusto and enthusiasm, the Brokers at Coldwell Banker Residential, along with Burnet Title, American Home Shield, CB Home Mortgage, Marketing and Regional Manager made the winter’s ‘Polar Vortex’ seem like a spring day at the US 30 Schererville, In offices. Every one dressed in sportswear of their favorite team or player and a buffet of luncheon favorites completed the festivities. In between Broker/ Manager Jim Oster welcomed Ken Salvatore of American Home Shield, Lisa Dozier and Donna Thomas of Burnet Title, Mary Modjewski and Don Madison of Regional Home Loans, Chris Haran, Marketing Director, and Frank Larson, CB Regional Vice President. Prospects are definitely looking up for the new year as consumers decide that now is the time to upgrade and move up or downgrade and get into something easier to care for. The professionals at Coldwell Banker have years of experience to share with the public. For information on any of the above, call the office at 219-865-9911. *** B R O K E R S B R E A K F O R F O OT B A L L : Donning their sportiest outfits, Brokers at Coldwell Banker turned out in their finest last week for the Kickoff of the 2014 New Year at the Schererville offices. Here Teresa Rizo, yours truly, Janice Minton-Kutz, Dave Barrick, Ursula Buchnat, Lisa Dozier, Cookie Zeleznik, Suzette Kubacki and Linda Petalas. Touch football was planned for the parking lot, but the snow and ice precluded such a fun game. *** SOUTH SUBURBAN GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETS FOR FAMILY HISTORY: We have been invited to join others who are curious about their family tree and want to do a family history, by joining the South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society on Saturday February 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. in the Hazel Crest Village Boardroom, 3000 West 170th Place, Hazel Crest, Il There is a $3 non-members fee. Committee and supported by the Village Board. Staples, a graduate of Chicago State University, has more than 20 years of progressive experience in law enforcement at the state and local levels. He began his career in South Holland in 2002 as a patrol officer, and over the course of a decade, Staples advanced to school resource officer, detective, and to patrol sergeant. He has served in the capacity of special operations sergeant since 2013. Prior to his tenure with the South Holland Police department Staples served nearly 10 years with the State of Illinois Department of Corrections. He was appointed to the position of Police Lieutenant during the Village Board Meeting of January 21, 2014. *** BRAVO TO JOHN CLAVIO, FINANCIAL DIRECTOR FOR ST. CHRISTOPHER CHURCH IN MIDLOTHIAN: John a well known real estate attorney, formerly of South Holland and now of Frankfort, is the true guardian angel for St. Christopher School. The school is one of 6 which has been slated for closing in the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese due to declining enrollment and a lack of funding. It seems that John, a parish financial council member, rounded up the parents, businesses and fellow ‘angels’ and has come up with pledges of almost $2 million over the next 4 years, all to support the school. Clavio likened the situation to the charming Christmas film, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” and the protagonist, George Baily, who at the end of the film, after all of his trials and tribulations, came up with the solution to the saving and loans problems with neighbors coming up with all the cash needed to save the day. The parents and friends of St. Christopher in Midlothian, did just that in 2014 and appear to have saved the school! Way to Go John Clavio and friends! ***

J E N N I F E R M I N TO N E N J OY S A N AFTERNOON AT CHUCK E CHEESE: With sub zero temperatures outside, families are hard pressed to keep youngsters entertained weekends after they get bored with the electronic games at home. A perfect solution is Chuck E Cheese, a restaurant/video arcade for all ages, but mostly little ones. We visited the Chuck E Cheese on Harlem in Tinley Park this past weekend. As you can see, Jen was loving her pony ride along with all the arcade games, rides, climbing tubes, bells and whistles, not to mention the Big Cheese himself who came around to shake hands with the kids. Chuck E Cheese is free to get in, but for the most fun, it’s best to order a pizza and sit in a booth and watch the kids have a blast. Prices are very reasonable. We used coupons from the newspapers but you can go online and get deep discounts for the food and coins for the games. They also have a really good (I was totally surprised) all you can eat salad bar, chicken and wings, beverages and cakes in case it’s a birthday and you forgot to bring one. Of course, they are renown for birthday parties and celebrating a birthday at Chuck E Cheese is an event where families enjoy reserved tables and a little stage show with the Star and his buddies on stage singing songs to the birthday kids. The noise level is high to stratospheric, but worth it when you see the joy on the little faces! *** Stay warm and here is hoping that this frigid winter warms into spring sooner rather than later! *** For inclusion in Neighbor 2 Neighbor, please call Janice at 708-302-8585 or write to her C/O Coldwell Banker, 20 E. If you’re a football fan (and probably even if you aren’t), you are aware that we’re closing in on the Super Bowl. This year’s event is unique in that it is the first Super Bowl held in an outdoor, coldweather site — New Jersey, to be specific. However, the 2014 game shares many similarities to past Super Bowls in terms of what it took for the two teams to arrive at t his point. And some of these same characteristics apply to successful investors. Here are a few of these shared traits: • A good offense — Most Super Bowl tea ms a re adept at mov i ng up and down the field and crossing t he goa l line. And good investors know how t o c ho o s e t ho s e i nv e s t ment s t h at c a n prov ide t hem w it h t he gains they need to keep mov i ng towa rd t hei r ow n goa l s, such a s a comfortable retirement. That’s why, at every stage of your life, you will need t o o w n a r e a s on a b l e percentage of g row t horiented investments, such as stocks and stock-based vehicles. • A strong defense — Even a good offense usually isn’t enough to vault a team into the Super Bowl, which is why most participants in the Big Game also have strong defenses. Similarly, the best investors don’t just put all their money in a single type of aggressive i n s t r u m e nt a nd t h e n forget about it — t hey k now t hat a dow nturn affecting this particular asset class could prove extremely costly. Instead, t h e y “d e f e n d ” t h e i r portfolios by diversifying their holdings among a r a nge of i nvest ment s : stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit, and so on. And you can do the same. Keep in mind, however, that although diversification ca n help reduce t he impact of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee a profit or always protect against loss. • Perseverance — Every

team that makes it to the Super Bowl has had to overcome some ty pe of adversit y — injuries to key players, a dif f icu lt schedule, bad weat her, playoff games against good opponents, etc. Successful investors have also had t o ov er c ome hu r d le s , such a s bea r ma rket s, bad economies, political battles and changing tax laws. Through it all, these investors stay invested, follow a long-term strategy and continue to look for new opportunities — and their perseverance is often rewarded. You can follow t hei r e x a mple by not jumping out of the market w hen t he goi ng look s tough and not overreacting to sca r y-sou nd ing headlines. • Good coaching — Super Bowl teams contain many f i ne player s, but t hey still need coaches who ca n a na ly ze situat ions a nd ma ke t he r ig ht dec i sion s at t he r ig ht times. Smart, experienced i nve stor s a l so benef it from “coaching — in the form of g uidance from financia l professiona ls. It’s not always easy for busy people to study the f inancia l markets, stay cu r rent on cha ng i ng i nve st ment-relate d laws, monitor their own por t fol ios a nd ma ke cha nges as needed. By working with a financial professional who knows your situation, needs, goals and risk tolerance, you will find it much easier to navigate the increasingly complex investment world. As we’ve seen, some of the same factors that go into producing a team capable of reaching the Super Bowl a re a lso relevant to investors who want to reach their own goals. By incorporating t hese behav iors a nd attitudes into your own investment strategy, you’ll be following a pretty good “game plan.” Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Fina ncia l Adv isor.
