Master Gardeners Offering Grants

Lake Central High School Faculty Rally For Breast Cancer Awareness

The Lake County Master Gardeners Association is offering grants from $100 to $500, which will be awarded in 2017 to schools, churches, organizations, businesses, or others who meet certain criteria. The grant money must be used for new or existing garden-related projects in Lake County, Indiana. Grant applications are due March 1, 2017. Scholarships are also being offered to Lake County residents with a declared major in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, Botany, Plant Pathology, Agriculture Education, Entomology, or another major that will benefit consumer gardening. Applications must be submitted by April 3, 2017. Applications for both grants and scholarships can be obtained by contacting the Lake County Master Gardeners Association at www.lakecountymastergardeners.com, email at lakecountymastergardeners@gmail.com, or call the Purdue Extension Office 219-755-3240.

Lake Central High School Dean of Students Erin Novak knows firsthand that the power of positive thinking can make a big difference on a cancer journey. Co-workers at the school have rallied to donate $2,594 generated from their t-shirt fundraiser to the Cancer Resource Centre in Munster. “I was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in December 2015 at the age of 36 and have since undergone surgery a nd reconst r uct ion,” Nova k sa id. “Another co-worker, who is the same age as I am, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in August of 2016. On the day my coworker had her surgery, I asked staff at Lake Central High School to wear pink to show support. Many suggested that we should have our own staff breast cancer awareness shirt. So, I designed the “Believe” shirts. The front of the shirt reads ‘Believe, We Are LC’. The back of the shirt reads ‘I Believe That We Will Win,’ a cheer our students chant at sporting events. We sold 260 shirts to coworkers.” The shir ts were pr inted in La ke Central High School’s print shop, under the direction of Jereme Rainwater. Students in the graphic design class made t he print screens a nd spent many hours ensuring that the shirts would print correctly. Since the initial fundraiser, another coworker has been diagnosed with breast cancer, and staff continues to wear their shirts to show support for their colleagues and raise awareness of this disease. “Ever yone shou ld have someone there for them on their journey and to know that they are not alone,” explains Novak. “I first met nurse navigator Dotty DeWitt before my surgery. She helped to explain what a breast cancer pat ient goe s t h roug h a nd a bout the variety of treatment options to consider.” DeWitt is part of the support team

But my granddaughter needed a place to live so I laid aside my plans and rented a place with room to take her in. Jesus, in a sense, put His life on hold and took on our humanity so He could ransom it to save ours. Are you willing to lay aside your personal plans to save your marriage or, lead a lost friend to faith in Christ? “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NASB) God loved us despite our sin; despite our faults and shortcomings. You loved

her (him) during the courtship, w ill you continue to love when marriage reveals his or her imperfections? Will you continue to love your spiritual sibling whose life before the Lord reveals YOUR discrepancies or, will you act in ways that subtly ridicule and humiliate him or her causing them to withdraw from fellowship? “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come……. will be able to separate us from the love of God……” (Romans 8:38, 39 NKJV) God’s love for us is perpetual; unwavering and secure. Not even the accusations of Satan or any other angel can come between us and God’s love. Will you guard your heart from allowing anything or anyone to pull you away from your spouse, or separate you from a friend? Ah…. “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God! Later I discovered that it’s actually a onebedroom, as the largest room is just that -- a “room” and not a “bedroom” because it does not have a closet. C a n w e g o a f t e r t he s e l le r, t he sel ler’s agent, or t he appra i ser for misrepresentation? If we decide to sell, we’d probably have to market it as a onebedroom because a savvy buyer and/or his agent may realize that this is actually a one-bedroom. Should we add a closet? We’d have to eat the costs, which is not fair since we paid the asking price based on the fact that it was a two-bedroom property? Answer: Have you ever been in an historic home? Often they have bedrooms with no closets. Instead, each room has a tall piece of furniture called an armoire where residents can hang their clothes. Today, we often use armoires as combination dressers and TV centers. A room does need a closet to be a bed room. Instead, what’s genera l ly required is a minimum square footage, a minimum height and a working window to provide natural light and ventilation. On the other hand, some financial gifts can have a prett y long “shelf life.” Beyond simply enclosing some money i n a c a r d , w h a t s or t of f i na nc ia l g i f t s c a n you g ive ? T he a n s wer depends somewhat on the recipient. For example, if your sweetheart is also your spouse, some of the g i f t s sug gested below may be redundant to the financial moves you make together.
