Spay Day And Open House
Humane Society Calumet Area’s Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic (EMAC) will recognize World Spay Day with an open house on Feb. 24. Held in honor of World Spay Day and EMAC’s upcoming grand reopening, the event will be held at the clinic, located at 421 45th Ave., Munster, Ind. from 5 to 8 p.m. Attendees can meet veterinarian, Dr. Holly Anderson; enjoy refreshments; tour the facility; take home info on the clinic’s new pricing and learn about the importance of spay/neuter in honor of World Spay Day. An international campaign of The Humane Society of the United States, Humane Society International and Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, World Spay Day promotes the life-saving benefits of spay/neuter. In 2015, EMAC helped prevent pet overpopulation by performing more than 2,000 spay/neuter surgeries. “Spay/neuter saves pets’ lives while lessening the burden on animal shelters and taxpayers,” EMAC Clinic Director Sofia Perez said. “We are inviting our citizens to sponsor the spay or neuter of at least one animal—their own, a friend or family member’s or a shelter animal awaiting adoption—in honor of World Spay Day 2016.” An RSVP for the open house is requested by Feb. 22. To RSVP or make a donation, call 219.922.3811 or email sperez@ hscalumet.org. F o r m o r e i n f o r m a t i o n o n E M AC , v i s i t w w w. emanimalclinic.org.

Girls On The Run of NWI Looks To Inspire Girls For Spring Program Gi rls on t he Ru n, G OT R, of Nort hwest Indiana is ready for its spring season and is looking for girls ages 8 to 14 to become a part of their 10-week curriculum-based program. Online registration has recently opened to the public until Feb. 27. GOTR offers two similar programs including a third through fifth grade program, as well as Heart & Sole, a sixth through eighth grade program. Both programs officially begin on March 6. Ji l l S c h l u e t e r-K i m , E x e c ut i v e Director of the local council, said girls on the run is so much fun, serving as a catchy phrase that is used by the girls t hroughout t he organization. Schlueter-Kim has been working with GOTR of NWI since 2006, where she has watched the number of girls grow from 15 to 1,700. “It’s like one of my babies. I’m proud of what it’s become,” said Schlueter-Kim. “It’s girls work ing toget her and building each other up - that’s what it’s a ll about,” said Schlueter-Kim. Each program helps girls understand themselves, value relationships and teamwork, and to understand how they connect with and shape the world.
Jill Schlueter-Kim, right, works alongside GOTR team reviewing new and returning coaches and working on training and program material. ______________________________
Tra ined volunteer coaches a nd mentors lead t he GOTR programs, meeting t w ice a week after school for the lessons and a creative fitness session that includes running. “We attract amazing women and men and watch t hem grow and learn,” said Schlueter-Kim about the coaches, “I think they’re all really amazing.” Registration for t he program is ava i lable on l i ne at got rof nw i.org t hrough t he Prog ra m Reg istration link. For questions about the program, contact Jodi Aurand, Jodi@gotrofnwi. com. The three-month program ends
with a celebratory, non-competitive 5K running event for the girls, the groups and t heir running buddies to help them recognize and show off their accomplishments. In one word, Schlueter-Kim described the program as empowering. The organization has programs t h r ou g h ou t Nor t h w e s t I n d i a n a , including Lake, Porter, La Porte and Jasper counties. The program works with surrounding elementary schools w h ich helps recr u it g i rls for t he program, but girls do not have to attend the school to participate w ith that group. Groups are formed on a firstcome, first-serve basis and each team has 15 to 20 girls. Girls on t he Ru n of Nor t hwest Indiana serves over 1,000 girls while inspiring them to define their future and build their self image. Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that serves over 130,000 girls in 200 cities across the United States and Canada. Our mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experiencebased curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Financial Advice Column
Watch for Changes to the FAFSA BOB KRYGSHELD If you have a child in college, you’re probably fa m i lia r w it h t he Free Application for Federa l St ude nt A id ( FA F S A ) , which must be completed to help ensure t hat students don’t miss out on federal and state grants, w o r k- s t u d y j o b s a n d loans. But you might not know that some important changes will be coming to the FAFSA during 2016 – and these changes can affect both the process of filing for aid, and, possibly, the amount of aid your child will receive. Here a re t h ree key changes to watch for: • Earlier availabilit y of t he FA FSA – Current ly, you need to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible after Jan. 1 – which means you’re probably f i l l i ng out the form even before you’ve filed your ta xes, which a ren’t due unt i l Apr i l. A s a resu lt, you may have to est i mate your income and update t he i n for mat ion later. However, beginning with the 2017–2018 school year, you ca n complete t he FAFSA starting on Oct. 1 of the previous calendar year, rather than wait until January. At that point, you will already have filed your 2015 taxes, so in filling out the FAFSA, you won’t have to rely on estimates of your income. For 2 016 on l y, t h i s c h a n g e p r e s e nt s something of an anomaly – specifically, you should f i l l out t he FA FS A a s soon as possible for the 2016 –2017 school yea r, u s i n g a n e s t i m a t e of your 2015 income, a nd then complete the FAFSA again in October for the ‘17–’18 school year, using your actual 2015 income. In f ut u re yea rs, you’l l on ly have to complete t he FA FS A once, w it h appl ic at ion s ac c epte d beginning each Oct.1. • Lower “asset protection” a l low a nce –W hen you
r e p or t y ou r f i n a nc i a l information on the FAFSA, some of your assets – such as your IRA and 401(k) – are not counted toward t h e r e s o u r c e s y o u’r e ex pected to cont ribute to your child’s education. Some ot her a ssets a re considered available, but a percentage of these assets can be sheltered. For the ‘16–’17 school year, this sheltered asset amount has been reduced significantly. H o w e v e r, w h i l e t h i s reduction could have some effect on your student’s aid package, it shouldn’t be too severe because income, more t ha n assets, is a bigger factor in the federal financial aid formula. • No more shared mailing l ist – W hen f i l i ng t he FA F S A , s t u d e n t s c a n choose up to 10 colleges to receive their financial information. Previously, when students sent their FA F S A s t o mu l t i p l e colleges and universities, these schools could see t he ot her i n st it ut ion s on the mailing list. But st a r t i ng now, s chool s will no longer have this information. This could actually benefit your child. Previously, if a school saw it was listed first on the FAFSA, it may not have felt the need to be flexible i n aw a rd i ng f i na nc ia l aid, assuming it was the st udent ’s f i r st choic e. Now, t houg h, w it hout a list of its competitors, a school might be more open to negotiating a more favorable package. It’s a good idea to stay current on the changes connected to the FAFSA because it helps determine financia l aid eligibilit y – and financial aid is a key component of your strateg y to pay for your child’s (or grandchild’s) education. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our home is listed for $250,000. We received an offer for $240,000 and they wanted us to pay $6000 of their closing costs. The buyer has FHA financing. We countered their offer with $245,000 and no closing costs. Anyway, after going back and forth, our Realtor convinced us to pay the $6000 in closing costs and raise the price to $252,000. We did and the buyers accepted our offer. A few weeks later, the appraisal came back at a $247,000 value. Now the buyer wants the home for the appraisal price and wants the $6000 in closing costs that we agreed upon. Our Realtor said take it and move on. We are not happy with this. What is your opinion?
you say no to the deal, the next FHA buyer within the 4 months, would use the same appraisal. It is possible that you could find a conventional loan buyer, with the hope that this appraisal would yield a higher value. But you are starting all over and there are no guarantees that it would be easy to find a conventional buyer or that the appraisal would be any different. Si nce you r cont ract is bei ng renegotiated at a lower price than what was agreed upon, you do NOT have to pay the $6000 in closing costs. Sure you agreed to pay them, but the buyer also agreed to pay a higher price for your home. Perhaps you ca n renegot iate t he closing costs or other items in the contract that would make the deal appealing to both sides. After all, the buyer did like your home and you do want to sell!
Answer: The concept of a seller crediting a buyer for their closing costs is pretty normal. The amount varies from deal to deal. If the amount can be agreed upon, it is a benefit to both parties, and produces many successful closings. A lower appraisal means that in order for the deal to be financed by the lender, the seller would have to drop to the appraisal price or the buyer would have to make up the difference. Very few buyers are going to want to purchase a home over the appraised value. This FHA appraisal stays with your home for 4 months. So, if

Emotionally Attached MIKE BUDER When it’s time to say goodbye to a house you love. I remember being ver y i mpressed w it h the property on my first v isit. T he 100 yea r-old farm house shone w it h caref ul restoration and charm. The acreage that surrounded it was dotted with heirloom fruit trees a nd orga n ic pat hw ay s winding through a variety of f l o w e r a n d v e g g i e g a r d e n s . T h e o w n e r, and mother of one of my recent clients, wanted my opinion as to its va lue. Tr ue comps were ha rd to find, but we came up with a plan for pricing. Howe ver, a f ter a long interview, we determined she wasn’t emot iona lly ready to sell. Our relat ionsh ip developed into a warm friendship, and two years later she finally was ready to say goodbye. Years of taking care of the house on her own (after her husband died) had taken its toll. She longed for a new vision and new adventures. It d id n’t ta ke long to get an offer, and fortunately it was a cash buyer with ple nt y of mot i v a t ion . The couple, who owned a nd adjacent proper t y, wanted to buy the house for their daughter and sonin-law. Getting a loan on the property might have been difficult. It’s a built on a skirted post and pier foundation. In addition, at the time, there was no heat source to the second f loor bed rooms. T he

A Celebration of Love ANNA M. CAISON I once read an interesting article about a c a ncel led wedd i ng d i n ner that reminded me of a parable Jesus told about a Great Supper. The article spoke of a couple who had pla nned a n el a bor ate w e dd i ng a nd d i n ner for their daughter. Forty days before the ceremony, the wedding was called off. The parents were upset to hear t hat t he lav ish gat her i ng t hey had pla n ne d a nd pa id for at t he V i l la Christian Catering Hall was not going to happen. Then, according to t he article, they had a “genius and generous idea.” They inv ited 200 of the cit y’s homeless to enjoy the 4-course meal that would have been part of their daughter’s wedd i ng recept ion ; rena m i ng it, a “Celebration of Love.” In Jesus’ parable of the Great Supper, a certain man had planned a dinner for a large number of guests who had RSVP that they were coming. However when the supper was ready none of the invited ca me ; each ma k i ng a n excuse t hat something suddenly came up and they

wouldn’t be able to make it. So the man sent his servants to invite the poor, the sick, the socially dispossessed and others to attend the supper, filling every seat at the table. Although the circumstances of the cancelled wedding and the parable of the Great Supper are different, the outcome of both demonstrates God’s love for all of humanity. As a nation, and as the church, we need to be very careful how we treat those who are less fortunate than we are. One of the charges God brought against Israel that resulted in His judgment against His chosen people was their injustice and oppression of the poor. Every person has a story. And if we’re not careful, God may allow one of their stories to become our story to humble us and to show us that all that we have is because of His grace and mercy, and not because we are better or are more worthy. Keep Seton Open W hen we f i r st he a rd t he C h ic a go Archdiocese was planning to close Seton Academy at the end of the school year, we were taken by surprise. As a parent of a Seton student, I am very proud to send my child to a school where I know they will have a great education and be well-prepared for college. The planned closure of Seton puts this all in jeopardy. One of the things that made me want to send my child to Seton is the strong emphasis placed on community service. Seton students take part in many activities aimed at helping the community and local residents. If Seton closes, it w ill be felt throughout the whole communit y. This could have a negative impact on all of South Holland. W hen t he A rchdiocese closed ot her schools, parents were given the opportunity to try to raise money or make plans for their children to transfer to other schools. We were Fo r s a l e : S c o t t s d r o p spreader $15; Toro ultra blower, vac $20; Brand new rake $5; take all for $30. 219743-2339

not given this opportunity and we feel it is unfair the way these plans were sprung on us. Our children deserve the same chances that were given to other students throughout the Chicago-land region. For these reasons, the parents of Seton Academy have joined with local leaders like State Representative Thaddeus Jones in circulating a petition calling for a delay of the closure of our school. We want to have the same opportunity to save our school long enough for our children to graduate and continue to their college education beyond high school. Please take a moment to lend your name to our petition by calling 708-862-5541 or by sending us an email with your name and address to parentsofseton@gmail.com. If you would like to learn more ways to help the students of Seton Academy, please give us a call. Kimberly Mamon, Seton Academy Parent

Theatre at the Center Presents Alfred Hitchcock’s 39 Steps A hit on Broadway and in London’s West End, the thrilling comedy, Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps” kick starts Theatre at the Center’s 26th season beginning February 18 and continuing through March 20, 2016. This comedic spoof offers non-stop action and features four actors playing more than 150 different characters. The show is filled with an incredible series of lightning fast costume changes that make for a great deal of laughter and excitement. Adapted from the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock film and the 1915 novel by John Buchan, the story follows Englishman Richard Hannay, who inadvertently embarks on a chaotic adventure full of narrow escapes and mishaps after trying to help a female spy. When he wakes up to find her dead in his apartment, he flees from the police and an espionage organization, desperately trying to find the truth. This whirlwind story is directed by David Perkovich with Matt Mueller (“Shining Lives: A Musical” at Northlight Theatre) as Richard Hannay. Linda Gillum (“A Christmas Story” and “The Fox on the Fairway” at Theatre at the Center) plays several roles including Hannay’s romantic interests. And Norm Boucher (“Big Fish” and “On Golden Pond” at Theatre at the Center) and Kevin McKillip (“Making God Laugh” at Theatre at the Center) each play more than 30 characters ranging from men, women, children, heroes, villains and even the occasional object. “The 39 Steps” production team includes Ann Davis, scenic designer, Brenda Winstead, costume designer, Michael McNamara, lighting designer, Barry G. Funderburg, sound designer, and Brittney O’Keefe, props designer. Matt He l p Wa n t e d : Dr i ve r s : $3,000.00 Orientation Completion Bonus!
