VERSE OF THE WEEK God blesses the people who patiently endure testing. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love Him — James 1:12

Attend the church of your choice.

W hen Israel’s Babylon ia n captors ordered them to sing one of their songs of Zion, Israel replied, “How shall we sing the L ord’s song in a strange land?” (Psalm 137:3-4) I don’t know if Israel ever sang any of their worship songs under Babylonian rule, but African and African-American Slaves, throughout their captivity, praised and prayed unto the L ord in song. Their songs ascended to heaven as a sweet-smelling fragrance before the L ord who in return, infused them with faith, hope and perseverance t hat empowered t hem to overcome their circumstances and thrive in an environment that was persistently hostile to them. James Weldon and John Rosamond Johnson wrote and composed “Lift Every Voice and Sing!” ascribed as the Black National Anthem, and rightly so because it describes the stages of our struggles and victories, acknowledging God as the center of our accomplishments. The Lord is why our ancestors could sing, and its why we, who still find our freedom and progress in Him, still sing. Even on our worst days, we sing, and shout, and dance!

Stony t he road we t rod bit ter t he chastening rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, we have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might led us into the light, keep us forever in the path, we pray. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had an unrelenting pursuit for freedom, fairness, unity and educational equality. We also share in his quest and aspire to develop students with unquestioned character. This year, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of diversity, inclusion and integration in District 205. In 1967, inspired by the Civil Rights Movement, a group of concerned parents from Phoenix, IL, gathered to create a plan. Much like Dr. Martin Luther King, they had a dream. At the time, their approach was simple, but their demands were radical - all children in District 205 would have the opportunity for an equitable education - regardless of color or zip code. Even in turbulent times, they believed that integrating children of diverse backgrounds and races would enhance learning for all students in District 205, creating a generation of well-educated students. This group of living room architects had the foresight to know that blending corners, communities and classrooms would enhance the way students think, as well as narrow the achievement gap.

officials, it was determined that in the fall, a small group of eighth graders from Coolidge Elementary School would be the first students bused to Thornridge High School in Dolton, IL, integrating the all-white campus. This news came with excitement for some, but cautious reservations for others. In the spirit of Dr. King’s movement for desegregation, the parents knew they were doing what was best for all students in District 205. But the incoming freshmen first to embark on this journey - not completely convinced. As depicted in the movie “Remember The Titans” - the first two years were confrontational and challenging for these freshmen. Many were separated from older siblings attending nearby Thornton High School in Harvey, IL. These brave

young students endured countless conflicts, while quietly transforming the privilege to learn into a civil right and individual liberty. By 1970, the boys’ varsity basketball team boasted a racially diverse bench of scholar-athletes. For two consecutive years in 1971 and 1972, they defeated every opponent and reigned as back-to-back state champions. The Lord’s plan was at work in both the classroom and on the basketball court. These recurring victories of Thornridge High School can be attributed to drive, resilience and the determination to be a united team during segregated times. On the court, they were different shades, but equally qualified and evenly capable. The adversities they faced strengthened their bond as a team, and developed their character. These

Good News, Bad News I sat in the library at the Holland Home on Saturday afternoon. Vern and Marion, their nephew Dan, his wife Shirlee and another family member who I did not know were with me. I went to the Holland Home on Saturday afternoon to do something that no one should have to do, and share some news that certainly no parents should have to hear. I was asked to be there to help break the news to Vern and Marion that their sixtyfive- year-old son Dave had died. I realized again that it doesn’t matter how old you are – parents are still parents. They were pleading with God, “W hy couldn’t it have been me. I’m old!” And they still talked about their sixty-five-year-old son as if he were in grade school. “Dave was such a good boy.” I felt so inadequate trying to offer some sort of biblical comfort or theological grace. Life-long believers like Vern and Marion know all the right answers; they know the biblical truths; and they know the theological promises. But all of this doesn’t change the fact that they will have to bury their only son. Most of the time, it’s my job

as the pastor to bring good news of great joy for all the people. I have the privilege of being the messenger of the Good News, the reality of resurrection, the new life that we have in Jesus, the assurance of salvation and the forgiveness of sins. This is good news. And I get to bring this message in prayer and in preaching. But on Saturday afternoon at the Holland Home, I had to bring bad news. How do we hold this bad news in tension with the Good News? How do we reconcile these two polar opposites? I thought about that as I drove over to the Holland Home knowing I would be helping to deliver really bad news. And then I was reminded again that it’s the Good News that gets us through the bad news. It’s only because of the Good News that we can endure the bad news. It’s the Good News of Jesus’ life, death, resurrection and ascension that elevates us to see beyond the bad news that so often times we find ourselves in. by Matt Waterstone Senior Pastor of First Reformed Church

Speaking Of Seniors

Avoid Expensive Taxi Rides WOODROW WILCOX A client sent me some bi l ls for a mbu la nce s er v ic e s to c he c k for her. The client is from Hammond, Indiana. I reviewed the bills and other papers. I asked for some other papers that our client shou ld have received from Medicare but did not yet forward to me. I suspect that I know the reason for the unpaid bi l ls for a mbu la nce service. But, I will check for more details to make sure t hat I a m correct before I give the news to our client. I believe that the client used a n a mbu la nce ser v ice to go to a n appoi nt ment w it h a doctor. The normal rule is that if an ambulance was not used in a life t h reaten i ng sit uat ion, Medicare will not cover or help pay for it. I w rote a n a r t icle about t his a few yea rs ago to wa rn ot hers on Medicare about this rule. In the prev ious article, I described how a client got a ride to a hospital i n a n a mbu la nce a nd Medicare approved the claim because it was an emer genc y. But, a f ter treatment at the hospital, t he c l ie nt c a l le d t he

a mbu la nce compa ny to take her home. There was no emergency on the return trip and Medicare did not approve it. That return home trip cost our client about $400 per mile. Taxis, friends, churches, cha r it ies, a nd loca l p ol it ic i a n s w ho w a nt votes can help people on Medica re by prov iding r ides to a nd f rom a hospital or doctor office in non-emergency situations for people on Medicare. Buying lunch or dinner for the person who gives a senior a ride in t hat ci rcu msta nce is much cheaper than paying $400 per mile to an ambulance service. Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our buyers had an inspection on our home. They found several things that we were not even aware of. Here is what t hey a re dema nding: 1. The inspector found a gas leak by our furnace. 2. There are couple small cracks on our kitchen ceramic tile. 3. The GFCI in the garage is not working. 4. There are a few more minor issues, that to us, are just normal wear & tear. We are considering killing the deal. What will these buyers demand before closing? A lower price? We would appreciate your comments.

On Saturday, Februar y 11, Patti’s A llAmerican hosted The Ninja Zone Expo. Answer: Ok, let’s take them one at a time. 1. The possibility of a gas leak is a dangerous safety issue to your family. Check it and get it fixed. 2. Do you have extra tile pieces? If so, it’s an easy fix. If you don’t, just say no. 3. A GFCI is a safety issue and a $12 part. Just fix it or call a friend to help. It’s not rocket science. 4. Minor things? You are not being held hostage by this inspection. Buyers are asking you to fix these problems. These are negotiable requests. But, look at the whole picture. yours is pretty simple. If you just simply kill the deal, how do you know the next inspection won’t be worse? How do you know you’ll get the same price? How soon before you get a new buyer? The home inspect ion requests a re negotiable. Agree to do a few things that you would like to have done if you were the buyer. You don’t know what a buyer will accept until you start negotiations. Once the home inspection negotiations are complete, there is really nothing else the buyer can ask for that wasn’t written into the contract. Sure, you still need to get through the appraisal and the buyers loan approva l, but if your home was priced properly and your buyer had a good preapproval, there is an excellent chance you will have a successful closing. I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cat s ca n act ua l ly cu rl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep per pendicu la r to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that st ick i ng t a i l s st r a ig ht out and having tongues ha ng i ng out t he ot her end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm. For t he la st t i me, there is not a secret exit f rom t he bat h room. If by some miracle I beat you t here a nd ma nage to get the door shut, it is not necessa r y to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must ex it t hroug h t he sa me door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for ye a r s - c a n i ne or feline attendance is not mandatory. And finally -- the proper order is kiss me, then go smell t he ot her dog or cat’s butt. I cannot stress this enough! Thanks for reading our newspaper. MWRD’S DAVID ST. PIERRE SPEAKS TO CAIC MEMBERS AND GUESTS: Flooded ba sement s ? 100 yea r dow npou rs ? So that is why we have been getting flooded basements for so long. David S. Pierre, a 30 year veteran of the water industry sought to explain why despite massive efforts to stop the flooding--it is still occurring. For example in the last 3 years there have been three 100 year f loods (or as the experts call them ‘rain events’) in our area. The MWRD was created in 1889. St. Pierre is the Executive Director where he manages a sta f f of 2000. The d ist r ict prov ides wholesale wastewater treatment for over 5 million residents in Cook County and operates 7 wastewater treatment plants wh ich t reat over 1.4 bi l l ion ga l lons/ day. We were given an over view of how the district works in trying to keep our water safe and clean and f looding to a minimum. He cited two areas as examples

of how the MWRD is trying to help--tiny Harwood Heights near O’Hare (1 square mile and 800 homes) and Robbins in the Sout her n subu rbs. Remed ies i nclude storage, hydraulics, and in the case of Robbins, a reinvention of sorts. The City of Chicago is on a 5 year plan for remediation about which St. Pierre has relatively high hopes. But again, Mother Nature may get in the way and send along another of 2, 10 or 100 year storms. And as we continue to develop what was prairie land, into houses, businesses and parking lots, and the rain continues to fall....well no one can accurately predict what may happen. But the MWRD is trying to keep pace. ***
