Financial Advice Column
How Should You Respond to Market “Correction”? BOB KRYGSHELD A s a n i nvestor, you may be gaining familiarity w it h t he term “ma rket c or re c t ion .” But w hat does it mean? And, more importantly, what does it mean to you? A cor rect ion occurs when a key index, such as the S&P 500, declines at least 10% from its previous h ig h. A cor rect ion, by d e f i n i t i o n , i s s h o r tterm in nature and has h i stor ic a l l y h appene d fairly regularly – about once a year. However, over t he past severa l yea rs, we’ve experienced fewer corrections, so when we have one now, it seems pa r t icu la rly ja r r i ng to investors. How shou ld you r e s p on d t o a m a r k e t correction? The answer may depend, to some extent, on your stage of life. • If you’re still working … If you are in the early or middle parts of your working life, you might n ot h a v e t o c o n c e r n yourself much about a market correction because y ou h a v e d e c a d e s t o overcome a shor t-term dow nt u r n . I n s t e ad of selling stocks, and stockba sed i nvest ment s, to s upp o s e d l y “c ut y ou r losses,” you may find that now is a good time to buy more sha res of qua lit y compa nies, when t heir price is down. A lso, you may wa nt to use the opportunity of a correction to become aw a re of t he ne e d to periodically review and rebalance your portfolio. Stocks, and investments containing stocks, often per for m wel l before a c or r e c t ion . I f t hei r price has risen greatly, they may account for a g re ater p erc ent a ge of t he tota l va lue of your portfolio – so much so, in fact, that you might become “over weighted” in stocks, relative to your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. That’s why it’s important for you to pr o a c t i v el y r eb a l a nc e your portfolio – or, during a correction, the market may do it for you. To cite one aspect of rebalancing,
if your portfolio ever does become too “stock-heavy,” you may need to add some bonds or other fixed-rate vehicles. Not on ly ca n these investments help keep you r por t fol io i n balance, but they also may hold up better during a correction. • If you’re retired … After you retire, you may need to take money from your investment accounts – that is, sell some investments – to help pay for your cost of l iv i ng. Idea l ly, however, you don’t want to sell stocks, or stockbased vehicles, during a correction – because when you do, you may be “selling low.” (Remember the most common rule of investing: Buy low and sell high. It’s not always easy to follow, but it’s still pretty good advice.) S o, to av oid b ei ng forced into selling, you ne e d to be prepa re d . During your retirement years, try to keep at least a yea r’s wor t h of cash instruments on hand as well as short-term fixed income investments. By hav i ng t h i s mone y to draw on, you may be able to leave your stocks alone and give them a chance to recover, post-correction. And it’s important to ma i nta i n a reasonable percentage of stocks, and stock-based vehicles, in your portfolio, even during retirement – because these investments may provide the growth necessary to help keep you ahead of inf lation. Consequently, as a retiree, you should have a balance of stocks and stock-based vehicles, along with fixed-income vehicles, such as bonds, cer t if icates of deposit, government securities and so on. Bei ng prepa red ca n help you get through a correction – no matter where you are on life’s journey. MIKE BUDER “If it sells to quick ly it wa s u nder-pr iced to begin with!” This is what m y s e l le r s a id t o me yesterday when we were discussing his price point. I said “excuse me? ” and he repeated it, nodding his head up and down. I qu ick ly t houg ht of my most logical response to this myth and said “what do you feel is a reasonable a mount of time on t he market before it sells? ” Well, I don’t know”, he said “but under 10 days is too short!” I quickly went into the process of selecting a price. FIRST, I ta lked about our competition; a ll t he ot her homes on t he ma rket w i l l let us k now w here we st a nd in the grand scheme of t h i ngs a nd deter m i nes our absorption rate. The absorption rate tells us what has sold and how many homes are currently available and how long it should take to sell this home. SECOND, I talked a bout pr ic i ng it r ig ht from the beginning and I used him as my example. W hen t hey boug ht t he home f rom me, a s we were look ing at homes, i f a home w a s on t he ma rket for a long t ime their first question to me was “what’s wrong with this home? ” Most times I pulled up t he histor y on it a nd su re enoug h the seller has it priced to high from the beginning. THIRD, is the list to sold
priced percentage which helps us determine where homes were priced when they went on the market vs. how much they sold for. Clearly this shows how rea listic folks are from the get go on their homes. I am not in the business of putting an overpriced home on the market and letting it sit there for 6, 9, 12, or 24 months. I like to come to an agreement on the price point of the home based on the above cr iter ia a nd let it sel l. That’s our goal, right? In my opinion if a home sells in one, three, five or even 20 days, it was priced right from the beginning. There a re a va r iet y of t hings that come into play when determining the price of a home. Two majors are location and price. All the proceeds from the event will go to help the numerous animals that are part of Second Chance 4 Pets Network. “In addition to helping homeless animals Second Chance 4 Pets Network also tries to help families keep their pets when they require assistance,” said Pazanin. KEVIN BRADLEY identical twins? They may even look alike. But have you ever known them to have the exact same likes, dislikes, talents, tastes, and mannerisms? Even identical twins are unique, just like the snowflakes. Consider family gatherings. Certain people ma ke one specif ic dish better than anyone else and are repeatedly called upon to make that dish. People look forward to it. It becomes their trademark item. They are somewhat renowned for it. Others may try to mimic it, but never quite succeed. It’s just not their thing. Consider professional sports. Athletes strive to be at the top of their game. They study and practice to play t hei r posit ion textbook perfect. They are all attempting to achieve the same success playing the same role. But do any two players play exactly the same? No. Why not? Because they are not the same. Hu ma n s a l l sha re 99.9% of the same DNA, yet we are vastly different from most other humans. Ou r ind iv idua lit y is t he key to our success. Discovering your special ta lent a nd pu rsu i ng it pa s sionatel y w i l l le ad you to the path of true prosperity and contented happiness. Getting to know you rself, bot h t h roug h i nt r o s p e c t i on a nd b y listening to what others say and how they react to you will help to identify your unique talent. Once you discover what it is, embrace and develop it into what is meant to be. Give yourself a chance.
The pundits of mot ivat iona l w r it i ng seem to agree that each and every one of us has a special talent which we a re u n iquely qua l i f ied to per form better t ha n a nyone el se c a n. T h is seems like a tall order with t he Ea r t h’s popu lat ion t oppi n g s e v en bi l l ion p e ople . Sk e pt ic i s m i s warranted given the odds that every person on the planet has a unique talent t hat none of t he ot her seven billion people do. How is that even possible? Surely someone else must either share my talent or excel at it, right? Perhaps not. While there are many similarities amongst the human race, there are as many differences as well. P E OP L E A R E L I K E SNOW FL A K ES…..NO T WO A R E E X AC T LY ALIKE. Think about that last statement. Science has told us t his for as long as I can reca ll. No one would argue the fact. We simply accept it as fact without actually studying snowflakes. Now, consider all the snowflakes that fall in a blizzard. Do you think there would be more than seven billion? Consider all the snowflakes that have ever fallen to the Earth in all the blizzards and snowstorms throughout time. I bet that would be ma ny times more t ha n s e ven bi l l ion . I f e ach a nd ever y one of t hem can be unique, why can’t humans? We are. People tend to g rav itate towa rds li keminded individuals when making friends. True Perspective ANNA M. CAISON Perspective is a funny thing. There’s a tree outside my apartment window. W hen I’m sitting at my desk, the tree appears to be to the right side of the window. When I lay at the foot of my bed the tree looks like it’s in the middle of the window and its outstretched branches fill the entire window. And when I lay at the head of my bed, the tree seems to have moved to the far left side of the window and only the ends of its outstretched branches are visible. Curious, I decided to go outside to get a true perspective of the tree in front of my window. Once outside I discover that the tree isn’t in front of my window, it’s to the right of the building. The tree’s outstretched branches are above the roof of the building and is not visible to me from inside my first f loor apartment. The outstretched branches that filled my window are actually from the tree that’s positioned directly behind the tree that’s to the right side of the building! What appeared to be from 3 different views from inside my apartment was a distorted view of the actual position of the tree when seen from outside my apartment. This little exercise reminded me of a passage of scripture from Isaiah when God told the prophet, “My thoughts are
not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways. . . For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) One of the reasons our thoughts are inferior to God’s thoughts is because we can’t see past the view from our personal window. Our thoughts about race is formed by what’s been handed down to us through the personal window view of our parents, extended family, and our culture. But God’s thoughts are encompassing. It covers the past and extends well into the future. He sees the whole stor y (good and bad, right and wrong) of every indiv idua l, family, and ethnic group where as we only see what we’ve been taught. W hen we judge others based on our personal window view we get a distorted perspective of what truly is. The only way to resolve our race issue is to see each other through the creator’s eyes and live out His command of brotherly (humanity) love. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We just recently closed on a home and upon moving in, we discovered a horrible cat urine smell in the master bedroom closet. While trying to resolve the problem, we noticed some stains on the carpet. I am curious to know if the previous owner and their broker are obligated to disclose pet damage to the area. They were the only owners of the home and up to this point have denied the existence of a cat. Based on the smell and the stains, it appears otherwise. Do we have any recourse? Answer: When you buy real estate owners have an obligation to disclose material defects -- and buyers have an obligation to protect their interests. Did you make the sale contingent on a home inspection satisfactory to you? Was the closet somehow off limits? Were the stains purposely hidden? If the odor is now so pronounced, why did you not notice it during the pre-closing walk through or when you originally looked at the home? The owners, if they had a cat, could say with some justice that the property

ref lect s nor ma l wea r a nd tea r a nd that you were not promised real estate perfection. Question: I have just put up a new privacy fence -- and paid for the whole thing. And now a friend tells me that my neighbors may have been responsible for some of the cost. Is this true? Answer: You put up the fence on your property. You selected the height and style. Your neighbors, if they like fences, are the beneficiary of your kind gesture. Someone we know told us before putting up a fence on their property they went to the neighbors and asked them to chip-in. And they did. Illinois is so broke they are not even sending out notices any more. It is up to us to remember when it is up and then go to our nearest DMV and get a new one. Or we can go to the currency exchange, but that is a little extra cost. What is the old saying? They are so broke they can’t even pay attention! Ah well--things will get better--they always do!
