Character is Key at Laren Montessori School Character development is a core part of Laren Montessori School’s program. For 50 years Laren Montessori Staff of Sout h Holla nd have been teaching preschool a nd kindergarten stu-dents the importance of living by the six pillars of character and of helping others in need. All throughout the year Laren students discover how fortunate they are and how many others have so little. Opportunity To Leave Mark Lake Central School Corporation (LCSC) rolled out an opportunity for the community to permanently leave their mark at the new LCHS football stadium as they unveiled the Tribe Terrace Brick Fundraising program on Wednesday, February 19, 2015. Dr. Veracco met with 40+ group leaders on Wednesday to present the idea, one of which drew immediate enthusiasm. The fundraiser provides community members, staff, students, a lu m n i a nd bu si ne s s e s a l i ke to purchase a personalized brick in the North and South Tribe Terrace areas of the new football stadium. The Tribe Terrace name was created by students in the Lake Central Publications group. T he br ick pavers a re pr iced at $75 for a 4 x 8 paver; $200 for an 8 x 8 paver and $500 for a 16 x 16 paver. The smaller size is text only but the 8 x 8 and 16 x 16 also include a graphic option. Accord i ng to Dr. Veracco, “We h a d a g r e at opp or t u n it y i n t he construction phase to give our clubs, sports and organizations a chance to

Calumet City Celebrates Black History Month Saturday is usually quiet at the City Hall in Calumet City. Saturday February 14th was a notable exception. It was the date that Calumet City hosted the community to honor Black History Month. The theme of the celebration used the country of Ghana as a starting point. In Ghana there is a word called ’Sankofa’. Sankofa has a rich history in Africa, and the meaning is passed down from one generation to the next. Sankofa means, “We must go back and reclaim our past, so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today.” It also means that one must return to the past in order to move forward. The symbol of Sankofa is that of a bird whose head is faced in the opposite direction of its body. This emphasizes that even though the bird is advancing, it makes a point to examine it’s past, since this is the only way for one to have a better future. The hosts for the days events included Calumet City team of Mayor Michelle, Clerk Nyota Figgs, Treasurer Gerry Tarka, Aldermen Ramonde Williams and Leni Wozczynski. Reverend Charles Dockery was the moderator for the day. Honored guests included Chicago Alderwoman Carrie Austin and State Senator Donne Trotter. The audience was treated to live performances by Calumet City school age children including Robin Bell singing the Black National Anthem and Breanna Jefferson reading the poem by Langston Hughes. “I, Too, Sing America.” Chicago Alderwoman Carrie Austin took the audience down memory lane, and how the foundation was laid by the previous generation. She remarked, “We learned what it meant to ‘mend’. We mended clothes, and relationships. We learned what it meant to be a good wife. We worked alongside our husbands and made sure that we were our husbands biggest supporter—in everything.” Carrie quoted verses in Proverbs 31 that speaks of a good wife of noble character and encouraged the younger generation of look to the noble values of the older generation.

State Senator Donne Trotter then took the podium and reminded the audience of the beginning of the civil rights movement. In the Southland, the ‘Underground Railroad’ was a vital part of assisting African Americans to migrate north for safety, better opportunities and a new start. Donne honored the memory of Harriet Tubman who risked her life so others could live free. The memory of other important figures were also honored including Dr. Woodson, Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglas, the great abolitionist. Donne also reminded everyone that Black History Month still matters. He closed with, “We have a job to do, so let’s all go to work.”

DeLaurentis Brings 25+ Years of Experience to Lansing Independent candidate, Tony DeLaurentis, brings over 25 years of government and personal commitment to Lansing. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I have been looking to purchase a home and I’ve noticed a home that has been on the market for almost six months now. It is in a great neighborhood and appears to be in good shape. Why isn’t it selling and could it be a good deal to purchase? I’m interested in it. Answer: There is no universal reason why a home does not sell. Some of the typical causes might include unrealistic pricing, poor condition, weak location, a stalled general market, an unwillingness to negotiate in a buyer’s market. As far as it being a good deal, the fact that it hasn’t sold for 6 months indicates it is overpriced. Maybe after 6 months on the market, the sellers would be open to an offer. Have your Realtor look up comparable’s of similar homes that have sold, and send them a reasonable offer based on that data.

Question: What is curb appeal? I hear this term mentioned on TV all the time. Answer: There’s a huge visual component to buying a home. We don’t simply want a given number of bedrooms and baths, we want a house that looks attractive from the outside. That look from the outside, what you can see as you drive by, is curb appeal. Thornton Township Celebrates Black History Month - ‘Beyond The Village’

Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli and Thornton Township honored Black History Month with a rousing celebration last Friday at the Township Senior/Youth and Family Services Center in Riverdale, Illinois. The standing room only crowd was treated to an array of presentations to help in honoring the past and celebrate the future of Black History Month in America. The featured speaker was Dr. Stanley Howard, a professor who specializes in African American Studies. Dr. Howard has taught courses on civil rights and constitutional law at various American universities. For more than 17 years, he has presented lectures on civil rights and civil liberties to educators and teachers from around the world under the auspices of the U.S. State Department’s international cultural exchange program. He is a member of United Nations Association Greater Chicago Chapter, an advocacy committee, where he serves on the international treaties/ conventions and human rights subcommittees. Dr. Howard is also the author of the newly published book Righting America’s Wrongs: A Best Practices Manual for Educating Black Male Youth. The audience was also treated to music and song by the Thornton Township High School Group—’Generation Men’ as well as the Najwa African Dance Corp. Thornton Township is made up of over 17 area communities and is instrumental in providing dozens of services to community residents. Living in the present, the here and now, we tend to notice the nuances that irritate us. We may have been more i m mu ne to t hem at a younger age, but somewhere along the l i ne t hese l itt le t h i ngs began nagging away at us. Perhaps it’s the potholes in the road, the terrible driver in front or behind you, having to wait for a train when you’re already l ate for y ou r do c tor ’s appoi nt ment t hat you had to reschedule already because your k id came home sick from school, and it’s 2015, why are we st i l l wa it i ng for t ra i ns a ny w ay ? A ren’t we supposed to have f lying ca rs by now? Have we not paid enough taxes to have a bridge over every set of railroad tracks in the country by now? Maybe your spouse drinks too much, smokes, snores, won’t get off the couch, or is just there to irritate you. Maybe your neighbor never ta kes dow n t heir Ch r ist ma s t ree. Doi ng your taxes? Does that not irritate everyone? That girl on TV…doesn’t her voice just rip right through you? Who put her on TV in the first place? My point being, in the here and now we notice all of these little thing that nag away at the calmness of our demeanor. Do you know any chronic complainers who are Christians? I do. One person in particular who is very close to me, had begun to complain so much that she reminded me of the Israelites during their trek through the wilderness to the Promised Land. God had revealed Himself mightily to Israel through a series of plagues against the Egyptians that led to their freedom from slavery. You would figure they’d trust Him to protect and provide for them as He led them to their new home. But they didn’t. Every obstacle and hardship t he y e nc ou nt e r t he y c om pl a i ne d , complained, and complained. Even when they made it to the land God had given them they refused to possess it. They didn’t believe God had already secured the land for them. Long before Israel (Jacob) was conceived in his mother’s womb, God told his grandfather Abraham that He would give the Land of Canaan to his descendants after him. God had sealed the deal! It was a sure thing. In our journey through the wilderness of life the Lord has promised us that through Him we will live and enjoy life to the fullest here, and in the Kingdom to come. Like the Israelites in their

w ilderness journey, we w ill run into difficulties and face adversity along the way. But because Jesus has promise to walk with us we don’t have to grumble and complain about our circumstances. Before the foundation of the world was formed God had ordain us to be more than conquers through Him. He said whatever we are confronted with in this life we shall overcome it because of our reliance on Him. Our victory is a sealed guaranteed. It’s a sure thing! The generation that experienced God’s deliverance of them from Egypt did not enter the Promised Land because they forfeited God’s Rest due to unbelief; they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years until they died. We also forfeit God’s Rest when we allow unbelief to fester in our heart and begin to complain about our situation, instead of possessing the promise of abundant living and victory over every problem. THE SHOW GOES ON DESPITE SNOW STORM: Our snowy winter has been playing havoc with social events as of late. Take the weekend of February 14th, Valentine’s Day for example. The Elvis Tribute Artists’ Irv Cass and his fellow artists Jeff Roberts and Curt Lechner had been booked months in advance by local concert promoter Chuck Mabry and wife Fran for that date. Irv comes from a small town in Michigan north of Detroit. Long story short, Irv and his wife and two sons started out at 10 a.m. the morning of February 14th and were still traveling by 8 p.m., his show time at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 178th and Lorenz, in Lansing, Il. The dinner (by Master Caterer ACE catering) and pre-view talent were great. Jeff did terrific renditions of Roy Orbison and Curt of Engleburt Humperdink giving the featured performer time to get into his Tom Jones and then Elvis costumes. Despite driving and getting caught in traffic in places like US 20 coming from Michigan, in true “The Show Must Go On” tradition, Irv risked life and limb to honor his commitment. In one of the photos, he is pictured on stage with his sons Preston and Harrison and gave an absolutely fabulous performance despite his grueling drive! Jeff and Curt did likewise despite Jeff having had stomach surgery only a short time prior. Curt is pictured here with his wife Cherie and super fan Anita Johnson, originally from Paris, France and now of Lansing. Anita is also a true Shopper fan and uses us all the time! Chuck and Fran Mabry are to be congratulated on a great concert, the 13th in a series produced in and around the south suburbs. Also pictured are super fans Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush of Calumet City and Debbie Sellers using their pink IPhones to record and photograph the concert. The concert goers included fans from past concerts and members of the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial Honor Guard (of which Chuck is a long time member as well as American Legion Post 697 in Lansing).
