Save the Date Coffee With The Mayor March 8 Mayor Riley Rogers, ‘Coffee with the Mayor’ is held every month at the Dorchester. Mayor Rogers invites all residents of Dolton every month to bring their issues and concerns—where he can personally answer them and work on resolving them. On Saturday March 8, there will be a special Candidates Forum. This will be just before the primary election, so please save the date. These coffees are for one purpose - to make the Village of Dolton a better place to live. No concern is too small or too large to be addressed. You cannot make a positive change in your Village unless you are concerned and involved. Take advantage of this monthly opportunity and be heard. Bring critique, criticism and suggestions to the Mayor. We hope to see you there on Saturday March 8 at 8:30 am. The Dorchester Center is located at 1515 East 154th Street in Dolton.

Bottle Cap Drive Earns Equipment What started as a small idea soon turned into a success stor y for the Ha m mond br a nch of t he Y MC A . Com mu n it y Relat ions Di rector Lynette McDermott first heard about t he prog ra m f rom people i n t he neighborhood. The concept was simple. The Lake Cou nt y Sol id Wa ste Ma nagement District was going to purchase 20 benches for schools and organizations that were first in collecting 400 pounds of bottle caps. “I just learned about the event so I created a poster for Facebook,” said McDermott. “The high level of participation was a pleasant surprise to me,” she added. The drive, which began at the end of October 2013 and ran through January 4, 2014, had a high rate of participation from staff, members and the pre-school children of the Y MCA. There was a sense of urgency to collect as much as possible. The children even held a weekly competition to see who would bring in the most caps. Each week the bar would be raised higher and more caps began to fill the storage room at the YMCA. There were two students who did a considerable job w ith collecting. Alejandria Bustos was able to bring in a total of 6,751 caps and Addisyn Miller was able to generate a total of 9,116 caps for her class. “Ever yone wa s excited to lend a ha nd in t he collecting process,” McDermott offered. “I still take caps even though the contest is now over,” she added. “T he k ids a re excited Licensed childcare provider gives loving care in my home. about the bench and it will fit nicely with their playground.” When asked how she felt about the outcome of the event, McDermott replied “The event taught the children to recycle and the importance of keeping plastics out of our landfills. In the end, the children learned a good lesson and the YMCA received a new bench. “In the end it was a win-win situation,” McDermott concluded. What does Love Mean? ARLO KALLEMEYN A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 yearold s, “W hat does love mean?” The answers they got were broader a nd deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think: When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.” Rebecca – age 8 “Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.” Chrissy – age 6 “Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.” Danny – age 7

“Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.” Bobby – age 7 (Wow!)

National Red Cross Month Encourages Blood Donation For 133 years, the American Red Cross has helped individuals and families prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. And each spring since 1942, starting with Franklin Roosevelt, the U.S. President acknowledges the American Red Cross and encourages volunteerism by issuing a proclamation that declares March as Red Cross Month. ‘”We touch lives down the street, across the country and around the world,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO for the American Red Cross Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region. “And it’s your support that allows us to be there every day for the millions of people who depend on us during their time of need.” In 1881, 60-year-old Clara Barton launched the American Red Cross based on a European movement that provided relief and protection to wounded soldiers. Now, 133 years later, the Red Cross continues to help individuals and families prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Red Cross Month celebrates the services and volunteers in areas like blood donation, disaster relief, health and safety training, and support to military members and their families. Red Cross officials say it’s easy to get involved in helping to effect change in your community. Volunteers can give blood, donate their time and talents, or make financial contributions. Nationwide, more than 500,000 volunteers make a difference through Red Cross services. Locally, the Red Cross blood program supports patients at more than 60 hospitals across 52 counties. Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion. Donated blood helps accident victims, premature infants, those being treated for cancers or blood disorders, and help make routine surgeries possible. “Whatever way you give – be it through blood donation, volunteerism or financial contribution – you’ll feel good knowing you’re helping to change lives,” said Whitman. “Without people like you, there would be no American Red 3 wheel scooter for handicapped $250,00 new wheel chair $250.00 708-6874776

Resolution Recipe for Success T he New Yea r ha s beg un, and I am sure t h at y ou a lon g w it h t he nu merous fa m i ly members, friends, and co-workers who have intrepidly stated, “For the New Year I plan on eating healthier, and exercising more!” Have already started falling off the wagon. S o w hy i s it s o h a rd to s t a y mot ivated ? Resea rch ha s show n t hat starting a hea lt hy regimen is much like retiring a bad one, such as smoking cessation, and must be treated accordingly. We all know that it takes 21 days to form a new habit, and that a lmost seems out of reach for our instant gratification American culture, but treating everyday as a victory can help in the battle of lapses and relapses. The trick is to create the biggest safety net possible, and reinforce it with many realistic, and obtainable goals and milestones. It is not enough to say I want to get healthier this year.

A more successful resolution would state: • I want to lose two pounds a week. • I want to eat three to four healthy meals a week. • I want to drop two minutes off my mile time. • I want to make it to the gym 4 times a week. • I want to double my push-up and squat output. • I want to lose three inches from my waist. By making many sensible goals, you create a large safety net, which will help you prevent a sedentary relapse of your resolution, and help you make it t hrough a ny f uture lapses. For example, if you were able to make it to the gym four times a week and drop your mile time by two minutes in two weeks, but not eat healthy for the three times a week, you may still be able to enjoy a 2 lb weight loss, which will reinforce your motivation, and fuel it further with the results of seeing your

running becoming more efficient. As time goes on you will need to adjust your goa ls, a nd maybe add some new ones, such as signing up for an obstacle course race, a recreational sports league, a 5k, etc. Fe el i ng u nc er t a i n a bout you r capabilities to set attainable goals and milestones? Hiring a Fitness Specialist can help you set precise goals you will more likely be able to achieve, thus keeping your motivation intact. In conclusion, you can get derailed and lost with a generic resolution that has no tangible goals along the way. Multiple staggered goals is the way to go, that way if you miss one, you are not out of the program, you will still have the next goal or milestone to reach for, and sooner than later you will hit that missed goal. Best of luck on your health and fitness journey!

2014 Lansing Autumn Fest Kick-Off Event Announced Early last year, following a successful f i rst L a nsi ng Aut u m n Fest event, t he Lansing Association for Community Events (L.A.C.E.), a non-profit organization, was formed. A board was assembled and the organization held two additional events for Lansing residents, a sock hop and the First Annual Christmas House Walk, both which received tremendous feedback from those who attended. L.A.C.E. also took over responsibility of the four annual summer cruise nights that have become a popular summer activity along Ridge Road. It was a busy year for L.A.C.E. as they managed the execution of those events in addition to the three-day 2013 Lansing Aut u m n Fest, w h ich ha s exceeded expectations and visions of creating a festival to once again connect residents and return a sense of community those who attend. The goal of “Bringing the Hometown back to Lansing” has been undoubtedly achieved. Pla n s a re u nder w ay for t he T h i rd Annual Lansing Autumn Fest, which will take place October 10 – 12 in downtown

Mortgage Matters

Five Reasons to Refinance Your Mortgage DONNA HOLMER

According to a recent Fannie Mae survey, nearly half of those eligible to refinance their mortgage have not – even with rates being at historic lows. Reasons cited were that homeowners were afraid they would be denied, didn’t have enough savings or “high closing costs”. Do yourself a favor - - if any of these reasons to refinance make sense to you, call a mortgage banker and check into it. Lower your interest rate. Securing a lower interest rate is one of the top reasons for refinancing. This can make a big difference in your monthly out-of-pocket costs for housing and save money on financing fees. Build equity faster. If you are in a position to make higher monthly payments due to an increase in salary or other good fortune, you may want to switch from a 30-year loan program into a 15- or 20-year loan structure. This enables you to build equity faster and save a tremendous amount of money on financing fees. C h a nge you r lo a n p r og r a m . Some homeowners who start out in an Adjustable Rate Mortgage (ARM) find that they would like to switch to the stability of a Fixed Rate mortgage at some point. An ARM may have been the most attractive rate and loan package when you first financed your home, but we can provide you with loan comparison charts to find out if you can save money with another type

of loan program that might work better for you right now. Credit score has improved. If your credit score has improved as a result of making your mortgage payments on time and in full, you may be in a position to take advantage of your improved credit standing. We can review your current credit score, the terms of your existing mortgage, and review options for other loan programs that could not only reduce your monthly payment, but also save you money on interest fees paid over the life of the loan. Use the equity you have established. A cashout refinance allows you to tap into the equity you have built up in your home. You may want to pay off revolving credit card accounts, send a child to college, or use the money for home improvements or personal expenses. It is important for us to know how long you plan to stay in the home. This helps us to determine whether or not it is beneficial for you to pay points up front to secure a lower interest rate on your new financing. The lender will want to know what the current property value is, how much equity you have built up, and your current credit score. sent his servants to invite the poor, the sick, the socially dispossessed and others to attend the supper, filling every seat at the table. Although the circumstances of the cancelled wedding and the parable of the Great Supper are different, the outcome of both demonstrates God’s love for all of humanity. As a nation, and as the church, we need to be very careful how we treat those who are less fortunate than we are. One of the charges God brought against Israel that resulted in His judgment against His chosen people was their injustice and oppression of the poor. Every person has a story. And if we’re not careful, God may allow one of their stories to become our story to humble us and to show us that all that we have is because of His grace and mercy, and not because we are better or are more worthy. ANNA M. CAISON I recently read an interesting article about a c a ncel led wedd i ng d i n ner that reminded me of a parable Jesus told about a Great Supper. The article spoke of a couple who had pla nned a n el a bor ate we dd i ng a nd d i n ner for their daughter. Forty days before the ceremony, the wedding was called off. The parents were upset to hear that the lavish gathering they had planned and paid for at the Villa Christian catering hall was not going to happen. Then, according to t he a rticle, t hey had a “genius and generous idea.” They invited 200 of the city’s homeless to enjoy the 4-course meal that would have been part of their daughter’s wedding reception; renaming it, a “Celebration of Love.” In Jesus’ parable of the Great Supper, a certain man had planned a dinner for a large number of guests who had RSVP that they were coming. However when the supper was ready none of the invited ca me ; each ma k i ng a n excuse t hat something suddenly came up and they wouldn’t be able to make it. So the man

MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES blown out. We couldn’t see, but we could feel that they weren’t there anymore. But, there just happened to be an iron ladder, which nobody had ever noticed before because the stairs hid them. Being there was no more stairs, they were out in the open, and we found them just by feeling around in the dark! Myself and a couple others who were blown right over by the ladder hollered that there was a ladder over this way, and that’s where most of the guys got out. The others got out by climbing a rope that was thrown down to them. A few minutes later, most of us were out of the hole except for those that were killed instantly or those who were knocked out unconscious. They were never found, because some men who were in their beds were thrown… To be continued… Marjorie Alice DeVries is a f reela nce w r iter devoted to sha ring t he priceless treasure of war letters, each one a unique w indow into a life that once was. “There’s no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole,” m y g r a nd f a t h e r u s e d to say. And I believe the same goes for a sinking ship. Just read t his W W II letter of Sgt. Lewis Haan, who survived two torpedo attacks and the sinking of the SS Peter Silvester. All the lights went out and we were laying all over the floor half unconscious, and all that could, got up on their feet. Just as we got up, another one hit in the same place, and the same thing happened, only worse because beams were falling down, and oil and water was rushing in. We were all covered with oil and salt water (we could tell by the taste of it), and we were trying to get out, but instead we were all slipping and falling in the oil. We definitely thought it was the end, that we were trapped. I have never heard so many prayers in all my life, believe me, they were from the heart, and in about 2 minutes after that, some of us found a way out. I was one of the first ones out because I was blown right over where the stairs were that led to the upstairs. B ut a d din g t o our fear—the stairs weren’t there anymore—they were

He had a hard time holding dow n a job a nd wou ld often drink so much he was passed out for hours at a time. W hen Andy’s g irlf riend aba ndons them, he decides a new situation is just what they need. In an attempt to try something different, Andy decided to hit the road and become a truck driver. Wit h t he deat h of H a y l e y ’s g r a nd m a , there was nothing else for her to do but ride along w it h h is fat her a nd be homeschooled. Now A ndy wa nts H a y le y t o g o t o h i g h school. The t wo move back to her g ra nd ma’s house and begin to create a life there. Hayley has no desire to go to school with the freaks and zombies of this town. Also, Andy’s condition seems to worsen every day. He forgets to go to work and is becoming

Calculus tests and detentions are not high on Hayley’s list of priorities. Hayley does have a few f riends in her new environment. It is t h roug h Gracie t hat Hayley meets Finn. At first, it seems that Finn is trying to use Hayley as a contributor to his failing school newspaper. MIKE BUDER “Shou ld I wa it unt il t he spr i ng ma rket a nd warmer weat her before I list my home for sale?” As a Realtor in the south suburbs of Chicago, I get asked this question all the time. My response is quite simple…“If you can list your home now, you really should.” And the reasons why are equally simple: 1. L ow i nv entor y 2 . Continued demand. Our local market has become a year round market. Sure, more people do move in spring and summer but traditiona l sellers have an opportunity to shine if they list their homes when t here a re most ly distressed homes on the market. These very low interest rates and increasing news reports about stabilizing home prices, have gotten buyers off the proverbial fence and into the market. Homebuyers are waiting for well maintained and well-priced homes to hit the market. This is an oppor t u n it y few home sellers will take advantage of bec au se t hey t h i n k people do not wa nt to move in the winter, and some people don’t want t h e i n c on v e n i e n c e of s h o w i n g t h e i r h om e s dur ing snow y weat her. But in my experience, the buyers looking at homes in the winter months are very serious about buying a home. Home buyers are tired of v iew ing bank-ow ned properties that need work

and have no disclosures. They are frustrated with short sale homes that they will have to wait months for a clea r accepted contract and possession. Most buyers prefer to buy from a traditional seller… a nd buyers wor r y t hat interest rates could edge up in the spring. The plain truth is a well prepared home seller most likely will not have to wait a long time. In the past few weeks, homes that I have listed received of fer s w it h i n days of hitting the market. Pricing and preparation were key to getting quick offers. These are not f lukes either. I have seen ma ny wel l pr iced listings fly off the MLS in Ja nua r y a nd Febr ua r y. In past years, I have seen inventor y levels double f rom Febr ua r y to May. So…stop thinking like the average seller, get your home on the market now and let it shine! ARTHUR V. VEAL IV I n t o d a y ’s i nt e r ne t age the way we look for a home has already changed drastica lly. Yea rs ago a family that wanted to buy a home had to talk with a real estate agent and setup appointments to go see homes in a certain area. It took considerable time and effort to find a place and to then go down to the bank and apply for a mortgage. During this time a rea l estate agent and mortgage broker were essentially the gate keepers of real estate a nd you a lmost a lways ne e de d bot h to bu y a home. Fast forward to today a nd now most fa mi lies beg i n t hei r proper t y search online thru one of the many real estate sites that will show you homes in your area or any other area for that matter. These sites allow you to do video walk thru’s of the house you are interested in. At t hat sa me website you are also able to estimate mortgage payments and closing cost. In fact by the time you contact a realtor to go and see properties, you usua lly k now more about the house than the realtor. But has a ll this tech nolog y ta ken t he

Strategic Planning for a Prosperous Life

DUNAMIS WOM AN EMPOW ERMENT SEGMEN T: Power Spea k s…Ba r r iers ! W hat are barriers? According to the Webster Dictionary barriers are a limit or boundary of any kind. A Dunamis Woma n is a Woma n of Power, who possesses t he m i r ac u lou s st reng t h divinely endowed within the depths of her soul. However, this kind of strength was given for a purpose within a dispensation of t i me for wh ich t hey were bor n ? Historically, women have always had to overcome barriers and break through barriers for great success. However, this type of success doesn’t have any monetary value, because our self-worth, based upon our dunamis power, can never be tagged with a price. The date and time you were born, as well as the color of your skin was based upon God’s strategic plan for your life. He knew when you were needed in this earth and how much you can bear. For instance, I am fully aware that I could not bear being born when black women were segregated to obtain the right to vote, especially when we were denied in the midst of other women; white women. My mouth is to powerful and the words that would have proceeded out of the mouth of Dee would have gotten me severely beat if not lynched. It’s not because my speech

would have been derogative it just would have spoken the truth! Dee Speak…You Think! Man’s segregated views greatly impacts the minds of women that still make us subconsciously believe that we are better than our sisters; naturally and spiritually. Every woman is a Dunamis Woman! A woman of power was born to experience pain in order to birt h miracles in the earth. Women, we must remain united and celebrate each other due the challenges we have collectively encountered. A woman of power does not need a man’s affirmation beyond being esteemed by another woman like unto herself. It’s time for women to ignite our power and permeate the minds of our real awesome men, so they can know who we were created to be and why we look up and live daily. Every man was born through the womb of a woman (a miracle), but the womb of a woman was taken out of man (a miracle). So, when a man beholds a woman they are looking at a reflection of themselves. Dunamis Woman, Inc. invites you to join us at our Women’s History Celebration on March 29, 2014 featuring Merri Dee of WGN Telev ision. Visit our website : w w w. dunamis-woman.com or call 847.908.0650 for more details!

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We have a contract on our home that had a closing date of 4 weeks ago. We were not given any reason for this delay except the lender needs more time. Why did the buyers write that closing date in the contract if they can’t even come close to meeting it? Answer: When you accepted the buyers offer, you signed the contract knowing t hat cont i ngenc ies i n t he cont rac t must be satisfied before a closing could be scheduled. The ability for the buyer to obta i n f i na nci ng is one of t hese cont i ngencies. Su re you received a letter from the lender saying the buyer has been prequalified for a loan, but this prequalification is only based on his credit report and what the buyer told the lender. Nothing else has been verified. Sometimes buyers exaggerate, thinking none of this goes through a detailed verif ication process. Sometimes, t he lender bites off a little more than they can swallow. This can affect the buyer’s ability to get the loan. I f you a re t he bu yer, you were prequalified for the loan with the mind set that you are going to get the loan. If you are the seller, you need to plan a move,

a new purchase or make other living arrangements. This is stressful. But the mortgage companies are the ones lending the money. Many of them do the loan approval process with little concern for any of the other parties. But, it is their business, their money, and they have the right, within the law, to do what they want to do. Why did the buyers write that closing date? Most likely, the Realtor spoke to the mortgage person to get a timeframe on the approval process and that’s what the Realtor was told. That being said, you must utilize your Realtor’s experience to make the best decision about the offer on your home. There is more to it than just the price. You don’t get your price if the home doesn’t close. CHARMING ALICE OF THE SHOPPER RETIRES AFTER ABOUT 30 YEARS: The Monday and Thursday voice of The Shopper, based in South Holland, IL will be retiring at the end of February, 2014 after about 30 years of faithful service. The unflappable Alice Drenth will be going home to hubby Cal so they can travel a bit and catch up with friends and family. Alice’s sweet and soothing voice took calls and ads coming into The Shopper over the years, made some very good friends who will miss hearing her answer the phone and working with her. This reporter especially has fond memories of Alice for the 20 plus years I have been writing N 2 N. Alice, you will be MISSED but have fun in your retirement! Alice is pictured here with Shopper Boss Arlo Kallemeyn who is presenting her with a gift of pearl jewelry. A farewell luncheon was also hosted and Alice’s co-workers at The Shopper attended. *** S T. D A D DY- D AU G H T E R D A N C E F O R SPENCER AND JENNIFER MINTON: Eight year old Jennifer Danielle Minton was the belle of the ball at the February 17th, 2014 Elementary School dance. They are pictured here dancing with other Dads and Daughters at the charming, annual event held for all grade schoolers. This is an event that has the young ladies dress up in their finest, have their photo taken and enjoy the buffet dinner all the while playing crack the whip and other fun games expending a whole lot of energy! Whew, I was tired just watching them zip around the gym! ***

COLDWELL BANKER HOSTS ANNUAL AWARDS BREAKFAST: Our manager, Chef Jim, pulled out all the stops for the February 17th, 2014 Awards breakfast at the Schererville office. Pictured here are some of the cooks who participated: Lisa Dozier of Burnet Title; Mary Modjeski of CB Mortgage; Donna Thomas of Burnet Title, Broker/Manager and chief chef, Jim Oster and agent Marta McCabe. Production for the office was up 24% over the last 2 years with volume of 199,868,638. With over 853 listings (up 6%) and 1,300 units (16%), CB clearly is going great in both Northwest Indiana and the South Suburbs. Credit goes to the hard work of the agents there and especially to Jim Oster who energizes and cares for each and every agent offering words of encouragement and help and generally keeps the office happy and humming along! This agent is proud to be part of this fine group! *** ST. JUDE THE APOSTLE SALAD BUFFET AND ‘MARDI GRAS’ CELEBRATION: We are all invited to their annual Salad Buffet on Tuesday evening March 4, 2014 in the school gymnasium, 154th and Cottage Grove (across from Almar Plaza).
