Pets Get Second Chance At Better Lives Woofs, meows, laughter and smiles f i l le d t he r o om a s m a ny p e ople searched for the animal that filled their hearts. Second Chance 4 Pets Network participated in the Getting Strong and Giving Back Pet Event at the Campagna Academy in Schererville on Saturday, Feb. 18. T he G et t i ng St rong a nd Giv i ng Back Pet Event was complete w it h pet resc ues, vendor s a nd a n i ma l lovers. Second Chance 4 Pets Network (SC 4Pet s) pa r t icipated i n t he pet adopt ion a nd broug ht cages w it h rescued cats and kittens. As people walked by the table, they were able to look into the cages and play with them. Second C ha nc e 4 Pet s Net work volunteer and foster parent, Stacy Mosca brought her kittens to show off to the potential adopters. In her journey with SC4Pets thus far, she has grown to love all these animals. “I love c a r i ng for t he a n i ma l s, watching them grow and form their own personalities. I love to save them and give them a great start to life,” Mosca said.

Second Chance 4 Pets Network volunteer a nd foster pa rent, Br idget Hi l lestad comforting one of the rescue kittens. _____________________________

Mosca is currently the foster parent to Norman and Bart. The two kittens are four-month-old brothers who cannot be separated. They were found wandering outside a local hospital in single digit degree weather. Their small amount of fur, wasn’t enough to keep them warm. Luckily, someone was able to rescue both kittens and give them a great foster home with Mosca.

“Our number one priority are the foster animals in the rescue,” Mosca stated. This adoption event gave people the opportunity to meet these animals. The potential adopter not only got to see if the animal is a good fit for them, but if they are a good fit for the animal. By the end of the event, there were ma ny i nqu i r ies a nd completed applications. The President of Second Chance 4 Pets, JoAnne Palko believes that having at least one application filled out for a potential adoption at the end of each event is considered a success. “When you find a really great adopter and know that the pet is getting a great home, it’s satisfying and makes you feel good knowing you’ve done your job,” Palko said. Second Chance 4 Pets Network is a non-profit organization helping animals across t he C h ic agola nd a rea a nd northwest Indiana. Founded in 2012, SC4Pets is committed to helping people help animals. For further information, please visit www.sc4pets.org

our youth to be more active and make healthy food choices. “Ms. Malone has taken our physical education program to new heights by constantly seeking opportunities to get our students excited and engaged. She has a dynamic spirit and a gift for working with people. She is respected by all who know her and will be greatly missed, said Queen of Peace High School Principal Hedi Belkaoui. Malone will be remembered for the energy and enthusiasm she brings to her classroom. “I’m really sad Mrs. Malone is retiring because she is such a great teacher and her class is a lot of fun. PE definitely won’t be the same without her, said sophomore Ashley Murphy. A sentiment echoed by current and former students. Malone is a staple in Chicago having also taught and coached at Mother McAuley High School, Brother Rice High School and St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School. In addition to her accomplishments in the classroom, Malone is an esteemed volleyball coach who has amassed countless awards throughout her career including Illinois State Volleyball Coach of the Year (1980, 1981 and 1982), City Volleyball Coach of the Year (1980 and 1981) and induction into the Girls Catholic Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

W hile meditating on the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing” I saw a connection bet ween t he gang v iolence plag uing Black Com mu n it ies in Ch icago a nd the dilemma King Jehoshaphat faced recorded in 2 Chronicles 20. W hen Jehoshaphat received word that Ammon, Moab, and Edom (Mount Seir) had band together to attack Judah, he i m me d iatel y procla i me d a f a st throughout the k ingdom and sought God for help. Through Ja ha ziel God spoke these words to Jehoshaphat. “Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s . . .. you will not need to fight in this battle . . .. stand still and see the salvation of the Lord who is with you.” The next day they rose early to go to the place where the battle was to take place. The musicians and singers led the people in songs of praise unto the Lord. As they sang the Lord set ambushes against their enemies that caused them to kill and destroy themselves. The interesting thing about these enemies is that they were near relatives! Ammon and Moab were descendants of Abraham’s nephew Lot, and Edom was the descendants of Abraham’s grandson Esau (Jacob’s older twin brother). It is grievous to see that after God delivered us from slavery and its horrors that we (Blacks) have now turned on

ourselves through gang violence that have cost us the lives of our family members and friends. Over the years our leaders have led marches in the streets of Chicago to call attention to the violence and to sol icit help f rom law en forcement, politicians, even rival gang members, appealing to their sense of moral respect for the lives they are endangering---all to no avail. The O n e we have not sought for a solution is God. We have not publicly (out side t he 4 wa l ls of ou r chu rch buildings) declared His Sovereignty over our communities through public prayer a nd songs of pra ise t hroughout our troubled neighborhoods. What if pastors declare a day of fasting and consecration before the Lord, and rise in faith the next day expecting God to deliver us from the violence our brothers have afflicted on us and our families? What if we took to the streets (as Jehoshaphat did) in our gang infested communities with prayer and songs of praise and dance before the Lord for what He has done in our past and what He will do today? He received our worship in former times as a sweet-smelling savor, surely, He will receive it today. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

“I absolutely love when a parent or coach tells me about how the program has impacted their girl, and influenced their family to be more active,” said Schlueter-Kim. “We’ve impacted a lot of people with this program, but just hearing a single positive story reminds me that all the work is worth it!” The event will be cocktail attire but guests are encouraged to leave their dress shoes at home and wear their favorite pair of sneakers. The evening will be hosted by Tom Byelick and Michele Piskol, producers and hosts of The Tomfoolery Show. It benefits the organization’s efforts to bring the Girls on the Run program to as many girls as possible and helps provide financial assistance to over 60% of program participants. As a nonprofit serving over 2,000 girls annually across Northwest India na, GOTR of N W I relies on t he suppor t of t he community. Girls on the Run of Northwest Indiana provides a physical activity-based youth development program to over 2,000 third through eighth grade girls each year across Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton, Starke and Pulaski counties. The program inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. “Being involved with GOTR has made me more confident in myself and helped me to really discover my leadership skills,” said Schlueter-Kim. “I’ve really found my calling, so it is never just a job for me. It’s made me a better mom and helped me to be very intentional in how I’m raising my three girls.”

GSU Dance Festival 2017 Gets Inspiration From Prince

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are talking about putting our home up for sale. My husband has deer heads on the walls of our foyer and Family room. He says the animals are a reflection of our lifestyle and it is what makes our house a home. I say it shows we are proud of killing animals and would be offensive to buyers. What is your professional opinion? Answer: When it’s time to sell your home, you can invest a ton of time, energy and money into getting the place ready for sale. You might declutter, stage and even remodel the house to make it as appealing to buyers as possible. Sometimes, though, no amount of preparation can overcome something in the home that, rightly or wrongly, offends some buyers and gives them negative impressions of you and your house. Right or wrong, dead animals are going to offend many people. Remove the animal trophies and save them for your next home. Live anima ls can a lso be of fensive. We showed a home that had live rabbits running around the house. The smell was over whelming and the buyers wa lked straight out of the home. Another home had a large snake in a tank that was eating grasshoppers! Sellers---you are trying to

sell your home. Let common sense prevail! Flags and political posters can also be a problem. Freedom of speech is in our Constitution, but they can be offensive to buyers, so remove them until you move into your next home. Other offensive items to buyers could be locked rooms that are not accessible. Despite relaxed laws on Marijuana, these drugs are still federally illegal and their presence or evidence of use, including odors and paraphernalia can deter buyers. Some sel ler s don’t rea l i z e t hey ’ve exposed too much information. In others, sellers want to make a statement, even if it’s at their own expense. We tell our seller clients to depersonalize a house. It is crucial to make your buyers feel as though they could make themselves at home, move in and be comfortable. Township Celebrates Black History With Program

Comedian Dick Gregory takes time out for a photo with Ruby Donohue, Thornton Township Human Relations Commission member, Township Trustee and HRC Chair Joyce Washington and Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli.

Dick Gregory has worked tirelessly educating people about African American history and fighting for social justice for all. As the keynote speaker at Thornton Township’s Black Histor y Month program he continued to reiterate that sentiment “We can’t just sit around and believe the things other people tell us. You have to understand what is going on and truly learn the history of your people,” Gregory said. Recognized as one of Comedy Central’s Top 100 Standup Comedians of all time, Gregor y helped bridge African American comedy to Caucasian audiences with much success during the 1960s. Using irony and satire, he held up a lens to American society and its racial stereotypes using comedy and social action to address injustice and discrimination in America. Dr. Jerry L. Weems, director of the youth and adult services department at Thornton Township said Dick Gregory is a man who has spent his life shining a light on social justice through his comedy, books and speeches. “He has been a constant voice for educating people on the realities of life.” The 10t h annua l Thornton Tow nship Black Histor y Month program entitled Marching Beyond The Mountain co-sponsored by Thornton Township’s Human Relations Commission and Youth and Family Services Department was held at South Suburban College. The event featured a performance by the SSC Jazz Trio, individual and group spoken words from Thornwood High School students and rapper Red Bella, vocal performances from Mark Hood, a former contestant of The Voice and South Suburban College alumnus and Thornton Fractional South High School singer Noelani McComb. Nearly 400 people attended the event. Gregory said he lived through racist times when everyone was racist. In the south he said it wasn’t just the Klu Klux Klan who were racist, it was the local government and other agencies. “That was why the movement was so important. We had young folks, old folks, black people and a few white people came together for the movement. A whole lot of people are better off because of the civil rights movement.” He also talked about how people begin to see themselves as the way others see them and try to conform to what they believe is expected and how that can lead to their downfall. “You women have it all wrong believing you have to go to beauty parlors,” said Gregory. “Who told you, you were ugly? Nobody told you, you weren’t beautiful so why do you believe that you aren’t.” “W hen you walk out of here today look in the mirror and see the beauty in you,” he said. Gregory also stressed the importance of addressing all of the issues that affect you. “Don’t just talk about injustice amongst yourselves. Remember, you have the power to change it.” Thornton Tow nship Frank Zuccarelli discussed t he importance of unity and working together at a time when our country is so divided. “We may have all come here for different reasons but when we come together we realize that we all care about the same things. The only way we can make it through tough times is staying together and making sure we look out for each other,” said Zuccarelli. He also emphasized that Black History Month is more

The message of empowerment through unity and action for social justice was addressed through spoken word by members of the Thornwood Thunderbirds and rapper Red Bella during Thornton Township’s Black History program.

than just remembering our heroes for just one month. It’s about recognizing that you can’t contain the history and accomplishments of so many people in so little time. “Unfortunately, there are so many people whose names have never appeared in our history books who added their

voices to the debate and bodies to the fight,” Zuccarelli added. “They stood firm, mobilized, organized and they created changes that many people thought were impossible. We are all a part of black history and it doesn’t stop unless we let it stop and we are not going to let that happen.”

Art Exhibition Coming To SSC

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Art & Design Department of South Suburban College is pleased to present a solo exhibition entitled Salt of the Earth by Margie Glass Sula. The exhibition will be on display in the Dorothea Thiel Gallery March 6 – March 28th with an artist reception on March 7th from noon-1:30. Margie Glass Sula creates artworks that reintroduce the curious world of nature through her visual interpretation of simple forms, and exploration of art making materials. Her works range from draw ing, painting, to abstract sculptures, which often change venues from indoor to outdoor. Glass Sula’s works all convey the same strange, quiet, and intriguing world that often lurks in nature that we fail to see, and have led to her becoming an award-winning visual artist; exhibiting work at the national level, along with landing works in public, as well as numerous private collections. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, IL, a WSSC Artist in Batavia, IL, a Juried artist showing works at Tall Grass Arts Association, Park Forest, IL, and member of the National Women’s Caucus for Art, who have published her works in numerous exhibition catalogues. To view a gallery of her work, please visit margieglasssula.com. The public is welcome to v isit art ex hibitions and receptions at no charge. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the fourth floor and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The galleries are closed on weekends and holidays. The galleries are supported in part by the SSC Foundation. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. Contact (708) 596-2000 ext. 2316.
