The District 149 School of Fine Arts Band performs.
Message of Hope and Healing
If re-elected trustee, Michael pledges to:
• Civilianize police department jobs dedicated to fleet management and building maintenance, and place more officers on the streets. • Increase positive police interaction with residents and business owners. • Strive to return Village department staffing to proper levels. • Foster strong community partnerships with other agencies, both public and private, including school districts, the Park District, churches and civic organizations. • Provide funding to address the poor state of Lansing infrastructure – crumbling streets, sidewalks, and water leaks. • Solicit and embrace input and ideas from those who elect us.

Bishop Donald J. Hying (right) visits with retired CEO Jo Ann Birdzell (left) and CEO Leo Correa (center) at St. Catherine Hospital on the World Day of the Sick. ________________________________
Bishop Donald J. Hying visited St. Catherine Hospital on Monday, Feb. 13, as one of several stops in Northwest Indiana to observe the World Day of the Sick. Hying spoke with patients in acute care and surgery, celebrated Mass and met with hospital leaders and staff to offer hope to the sick and inspiration to those in the healthcare profession. Sr. Mary Ellen Goeller, director of pastoral care at St. Catherine Hospital said healthcare has always been an important part of the mission of the church. “It is a cornerstone of Jesus’ ministry,” she said. “We are all our brothers’ keeper.” In the Emergency Department, Hying huddled with staff to commend them for their commitment to the unit where no two days or two hours are alike. “You are on the front lines of an essential part of our vision,” he said, noting, “Healthcare is the heart of the mission. It is taking care of the sick. It’s what you do so well.” Leo Correa, who recently began his duties as chief executive officer of St. Catherine Hospital, called the bishop’s visit uplifting and inspirational.

Adopted Dog Inspires Owner to Give Back Ashley Tymm, determined to give back to the Humane Society for all they have done for her dog, dedicates her time to volunteer at the shelter. Tymm adopted Mistletoe, one of the dogs that has been at the shelter the longest. From that moment she was inspired to help the animals in some way. Tymm was working at a café when she started talking to a customer about a certain dog at the Humane Society named Missy. She asked her landlord if she could adopt a dog and he told her about one he rescued off the street. “He said if by some way she was still there I should look for a dog named Mistletoe,” said Tymm. M ist letoe t u r ned out to be t he same dog the woman at the café had mentioned. Tymm fell in love with Mistletoe and adopted her. “It was one of the best choices I have ever made,” said Tymm. Ty m m w a nte d to g i ve back to t he Hu ma ne Societ y a nd sta r ted volunteering in December of 2016. “After seeing how much work and love was put towards Mistletoe for the three years she was in the shelter, I wanted to give back,” said Tymm. She likes to work w it h dogs like Mistletoe and give them attention, walks, and love. “Don’t forget treats, lots of them,” said Tymm. Volunteering not only brings joy

to Tymm every day, but also to the animals. Tymm believes volunteering makes a huge difference in their day. The a nima ls have a lot of people standing over their cage and some people pass up certain ones. Positive human interaction is beneficial for the animals because it gives them more experience and a better chance at finding a home. “It’s important to show the animals love and that a new home is possible,” said Tymm. W hen volu nteer i ng, Ty m m does
enrichment which includes stuffing Kong toys, freezing treats and helping pass the food out for the day. She also walks dogs, and helps with play groups. She was trained to handle dogs and learned a lot about different types of behaviors. Tymm is grateful for the behavioral workers at the Humane Society. They worked with Mistletoe before she was adopted and never gave up on her. They also inspired Tymm to help dogs like her own and make a difference in their lives. “Coming back to the shelter and having dogs recognize you is the most rewarding thing you could imagine. Mistletoe still recognizes two of the behavioral workers. It’s so beautiful and encouraging to see an animal respond to someone in that way,” said Tymm. K r i sten Jeppeson, a behav ior a l worker, has been involved with the Humane Society for nine years. She works with dogs who are social and try to match up personality and play styles in both the small and large playgroups. For those dogs who are not as social she spends more one on one time with them. “The shelter is an amazing place, filled with incredible animals, and special humans. It changes you in a really beautiful way,” said Tymm.

Hats Off To The Hat Lady Of Hartsfield Village Toting a bag filled with ruby-red hats, Hartsfield Village resident Mary Kerekes made a special delivery to the Family Birthing Centers at the hospitals of Community Healthcare System on Valentine’s Day. Since she started knitting, she has made more than 850 tiny hats – each stitched with love - and delivered them to the moms and babies at Community Hospital in Munster, St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago and St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart. Mary says she knits hats for the babies because she loves babies and she finds great joy in giving. “I love babies,” says Mary. “I have seven of my own!” Mary has a big family that has grown even bigger over the years. She raised seven children (six girls and one boy) in Whiting with her late husband William. She now has five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. During the 80s, Mary moved to Virginia to be closer to and help out her children and that is when she learned how to knit. “I was friends with the owner of a yarn shop and she taught me how to knit,” Kerekes recalls. “We were surrounded by yarn. I learned how to make a sweater and other beautiful things. From then on, I was always making something. I would sit in a rocker and k nit on t he front porch of my daughter’s house. I really enjoy knitting because it’s something that you can do whenever you happen to have time, and it’s very relaxing.” Mary says that she loves living at Hartsfield Village with her friends where she continues to knit the soft, handmade caps. “I am blessed to be living in such a beautiful community and have the opportunity to deliver the hats in person to our

Governors State University Approves Tuition Increase With a clear focus on continuing to serve its community and fulfill its mission amid continued budget uncertainty, Governors State University’s Board of Trustees at its meeting on Friday, March 3, approved a 15 percent tuition increase and the elimination of 22 programs— “difficult but necessary decisions,” according to Pat Ormsby, Chair of the Board of Trustees. For undergraduates, the tuition increase will affect only new students starting this fall and a percentage of funds from the increase w i l l be set aside to a id hig hachieving students, favoring those who might also have some degree of need. Even with the increase, GSU maintains its position as the most affordable public university in the Chicagoland region. GSU has not increased its tuition at all for the last two years. For nearly t wo years, Governors State University and all Illinois public universities have been operating without a budget from the state. For GSU, stop-gap funding resulted in a 70 percent cut in appropriations for FY 2016 and a 50 percent cut for FY 2017. Throughout the crisis, Governors State has been able to proceed because of careful and restrained budget management, innovative programming to open new markets, program realignments, and personnel reductions. Last summer the University eliminated 62 staff positions and 13 programs from its academic roster, br i ng i ng t he tot a l of prog ra m eliminations, with today’s Board action, to 35.
GSU President Elaine P. Maimon said, “Even with an unprecedented decline in state support and the Board’s decision to eliminate academic programs, we will continue to provide high quality education as we sharpen GSU’s focus and make room for a few new majors specifically tailored to twenty-first century workforce needs.” A dd i n g hei g ht ene d c onc er n t o t he university’s financial outlook are serious deferred maintenance issues, which threaten daily operations. 85% of GSU’s buildings and infrastructure are over 45 years old. The system of water pipes and many roofs are in dire need of replacement.” GSU is currently lobbying in Springfield for a separate bill to fix its half-century old pipes. HB2586, sponsored by Representative A nt hony DeLuca, whose 80t h Dist r ict encompasses University Park, supports the need for deferred maintenance stop-gap funding to supplement operational stopgaps, if Illinois continues without a budget. University officials said today’s decisions by t he Boa rd may have to be “just t he beginning,” if t he state does not come through with adequate funding for Governors State University. GSU President Elaine P Maimon said, “It is our obligation to protect the long-term health of the university while we continue to serve as many students as possible with high quality programs. That is what we are going to do.”

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question : We just put our home on the market for sale. I am terrified of negotiations even though I have a Realtor. Any suggestions? A nswer : W hen you l i st you r home for sale, you may think you’ve priced it right, staged it beautifully, and timed the market for a quick sale. The reality is that buyers are full of surprises, nearly all of them predictable. They rarely pay list price; they discount or dismiss improvements you’ve made; their inspections usually turn up something for you to fix, and they may have terms that you weren’t counting on -- like needing to sell their home before they buy yours. Whether you plan to or not, you’re going to have to negotiate. Negotiating doesn’t mean you win and the buyer loses, or you lose and the buyer wins. It’s simply a way to make smaller concessions so that you don’t lose the buyer and the buyer doesn’t lose your house. Negotiation is designed for both of you to get what you want. Here are three negotiating mistakes to avoid: • Demanding top dollar for an aging property. Yes, the market is better than it was during the recession, but an older home that hasn’t been updated or maintained to perfection
ca n’t compete w it h refreshed or newer homes. • Getting angry at a low offer. A buyer may make an offer for your home that is far lower than you feel it’s worth. Don’t take it personally -- it’s a negotiating tactic. If the buyer didn’t want the home, there would be no offer, so at least you know the buyer wants to negotiate. • All or nothing attitude. Negotiations keep the dialog fluid and the buyer interested. So, negotiate! Remember, you want to sell your home and your buyer wants to buy it. Maximize you r of fer s w it h good ne got iat i ng techniques and move on with your life. A nd when you buy your nex t home, you’ll be more experienced and a better negotiator knowing the seller’s side of things. Women Must Act to Overcome Financial Challenges
BOB KRYGSHELD International Women’s D a y, ob s e r v e d t o d a y, c elebr ate s t he s oc i a l, c u lt u r a l a nd pol it ic a l achievements of women. Yet, women continue to face ma ny cha l lenges. For one t h i ng, women still encounter genderspecific obstacles to their important financial goals, such as a com for table ret irement. If you’re a woman, what can you do to get past these barriers? First of all, you need to recognize them. Here are a few to consider: • Longer life spans – A 6 5 -y e a r- o l d w o m a n is ex pected to live, on aver a ge, a not her 20. 5 years, compared to 17.9 yea rs for a 65-yea r-old man. • Lower incomes – Women working full time in the US t y pic a l ly a re pa id 80% of what men earn, accord i ng to Census Bureau data. • More time away from t he w or k f or c e – Men work a n average of 38 years, compared to just 29 for women. The gap is largely due to women ta k ing time off to care for young children and elderly parents. Women who work substantially fewer years than men will m iss out on hu nd reds of thousands of dollars i n ea r n i ngs a nd yea rs of cont r ibut ions to retirement plans. These statistics certainly are sobering – but they don’t mean you are powerless to improve your financial security: • Boost your retirement
plan contributions – P ut i n a s muc h a s you can af ford to y ou r 4 01( k ) or ot h e r e m p l o y e r- s p o n s o r e d plan, and increase your contributions whenever you get a raise. And you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA. • Invest for growth – Some studies have shown that women may invest less aggressively than men. If you invest mostly in con ser v at ive veh icles, you may r u n t he r i sk of falling short of your financial goals. To achieve these goals, you’ll need a reasonable amount of growth potential in your portfolio. • Ex tend your work ing life – If you like your job, you may want to consider sticking with it a couple of years past when you init ia l ly t houg ht you’d retire. You’ll be able to add to your retirement accounts, and the extra years of work may help you increase your Social Security benefits. These payments are based on an average of your highest 35 years of earnings, so if you have a zero in some of these years, it will pull t he average dow n. A n extended career can help you in regard to Social Se c u r it y, be c au se t he extra money may mean you can afford to delay collecting benefits. Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

17 Claims Missing WOODROW WILCOX On February 27, 2017, I reviewed a medical bill for a client from Ga r y, Indiana. The bill sought $261.15 from the client for 17 different doctor visits in 2016 and 2017. I phoned t he client’s Me d ic a r e s upplement insu ra nce compa ny to learn what it knew about the claims. IT REPORTED THAT MEDICARE NEVER SEN T THE 17 CL A IMS TO I T. So, t he cla i m s were filed with Medicare a nd Med ica re pa id its portion on the claims, but Medicare never sent any of 17 claims for our client to the client’s Medicare supplement i nsu ra nce company. You c a n’t bl a me a n insurance company for not pay ing claims t hat Med ic a re never send s to it. To fix the problem, I w rote a letter to t he medical firm explaining the problem and asking that firm to send essential cla ims information directly to the insurance company.

Helping Others Know Where to Get Help
ANNA M. CAISON W hen I was in training for ministry, my trainer-mentor was a hard person to understand. She would encourage me, and give me opportunities to practice what I had been taught; but, when the outcome of my assignments proved successful, in the midst of praise and approval from staff, she’d come up to me with a plain look on her face and say, “Don’t be a castaway!” Her statement (taken from 1 Cor. 9:27) always irritated me. It was as if she was telling me there was something false about my service before the Lord-----that I was doomed to be disqualified by God. Today, however, I am grateful for the many times she firmly spoke those words to me. It would be a tragedy to have led so many to faith in Christ, and find yourself disqualified to enter heaven because you didn’t believe nor practice what you taught to others. In the movie, “Left Behind,” Pastor Bruce found himself in this very predicament. In the scene following the Rapture, Pastor Bruce sits alone, in his empty church assessing his life. He says, “What a fraud I am! I’m a fraud, and everybody bought it except you (God). I knew your message! I knew your words! I stood right here and
preached it! I was good (eloquent & soul stirring)! And they’re gone and I’m here! Knowing and believing are two different things. I’m living a lie.” An incessant prayer of mine is, “Lord, search me and show me my true intentions toward you.” As I examine my own life, it’s important to me that I’m living the sermons I preach. It’s important that my relationship with Christ is experiential and not just a bunch of theological discussions. I must continue to dream His dreams, see the world through His eyes, feel him tug at my heart when I begin to get off track, I want to continue to experience His resurrection power convicting and purging me of sin in my life. After all of my preaching, teaching, and service to others, leading many to come to faith in Christ, I don’t want to find myself disqualified. I want Him to find pleasure in receiving me unto Himself. So, t he cha rge t hat w a s g iven to me, I now give to you. “DON’T BE A CASTAWAY!” For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

there will be 2 types of meetings this year. One meeting will be a closed meeting for veterans who have been there awhile. Then there will be a second meeting for everyone else. The first meeting is on the last Thursday of every month and will be by invitation only because of some of the disabilities of the veterans. The second meeting will be for veterans who want to tell their stories to the public, but those dates are tentative. The meetings have members from all types of other affiliates that can help the veterans with issues and any other questions about medical and compensation benefits. Chancellor says, “the meetings are not just for veterans but the family members and the surrounding communities.” So, come in and support the troops.

HIGH HEELS AND HIGH HOPES FOR DIANE PR ANSKE: The Lansing resident was feted at back to back pa r t ies Friday, Febr ua r y 24th, 2017. As most know Diane was injured over a year ago and has been on the mend ever since. N 2 N interviewed her in October of 2016 a nd ma r veled at her rema rkable recover y then. But, to see Diane last week at the party given, in part for her, was truly magical! Diane is getting back to her former self and especially has retained her delightful sense of humor. The part y was hosted by Patty Eidam along with Cookie Borys, Kathy Hardy, JoEllyn Kelley, Kathy Manno, Dawn Myers, Katie Oberman, Rita Oberman, Megan Roe and Sheila Zeldenrust. The home of Bud and Patty Eidam was the lovely setting for food, fun, raff les and a gathering of locals under the banner of the Village Voice Party. Diane is pictured here when she arrived with her boy friend/companion/soulmate John Kawalec along with Patty Eidam, JoEllyn Kelly and well wishers. In another photo Patty is in the kitchen with JoEllyn and Patty’s sister Kate Mott. Patty made all of the delicious appetizers herself including her signature chocolate mousse. Diane was shown all the raff le gifts that were donated toward the event and took a liking to a huge basket put together by JoEllyn and her restaurant, JJ Kelley’s. It was won by Megan Roe and Megan generously gave the basket to Diane. The honored guest had to leave the party early however, so that she could get over to the Lansing County Club where the community orga n i zat ion L ACE crow ned Dia ne t heir Mardi Gras Queen! Needless to say the entire La nsing Communit y is pulling for Dia ne Pranske to make a complete recovery! The fundraiser given in part for Diane Pransky took in $9400, of which $4700 was given to Diane. ***

ST. FLORIAN AND KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HOSTS MARDI GRAS FEATURING PIEROGI: Pictured here at the St. Florian and General Pulaski 3323 Knights of Columbus in Chicago (Hegewisch) last week are Ted Nester, Tony Tomich and Ed Lihota of the K of C as they check locals in to enjoy the feast of Polish del icacies. In a not her photo is beloved former St. Florian Pastor Fr. Jim Ma zdlo, Holly Bobolink and Adrienne Bonczek. Fr. Jim is now at St. Walter’s but comes back to St. Florian’s on a regular basis to visit with his former f lock. St. Florian, St. Columba of Hegewisch and Mother of God Parish of Burnham, Illinois are all part of a ‘cluster’ of Catholic churches which are working toward sharing the seasonal celebrations observed by Catholics the world over. With a declining base of parishioners, the Chicago Catholic Archdiocese decided that clustering would keep the churches open and available to their body of worshipers. Fr. Charles Wat k ins, pastor of St. Columba and Mother of God, is also Dean of Vicariate VI and coordinator and overseer of the cluster. *** SIGHTS SEEN IN SOUTH HOLL A ND-The venerable Dr. Joh n Magon, ageless a nd priceless, was shopping at A ldi’s recently at the same time N 2 N was there. W hat a delight to see the “Flying DDS” as his license plates say, looking so good! Dr. Magon was a dentist in South Holland for many years until he retired and then focused on f lying his own plane all over the world and teaching his craft. His children and grandchildren are all pilots too so the Flying Magon family is super accomplished on the ground and in the sky! Even his late wife Pat Magon was acccomplished aviator in addition to being a Village Trustee. Bravo and Blessings Dr. John Magon! ***
HOW GOES THE ECONOMY IN 2017? That question was considered in a comprehensive overview given by William Strauss, Senior Economist for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago during the Calumet Area Industrial Commission’s (CAIC) Thursday March 2nd, 2017 luncheon meeting at the Dy nast y in Hammond, In Strauss drew the distinction between the USA as a whole and our own Midwest reg ion wh ich act ua l ly enjoyed a bit of a boost overall and looked back to the nation as it recovered, nay boomed, after W W II and t he countr y put t he returning soldiers back to work. In t he 1950’s a nd 1960’s t he need for workers was so great that Baby Boomers and women got into the work force further boosting the economy. Mov ing into t he 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s t he work place cha nged, t he m i l ls went out of business and we morphed into a service oriented societ y which we are today. The need for manufacturing and manufacturing machinery declined and along with it those high paying jobs. Strauss noted that our last recession brought about by the housing crisis in 2008 took 8 years to recovery and really only got us back to square 1, not improving by much. Strauss also questioned the veracity of current employment and unemployment statistics we hear bandied about by the news stations, quoting an old saying that there are “lies, damned lies and statistics ! ” He predicted that the economy in 2017 would surpass that of 2016 but just by a fraction of a percentage and that as regards the new administ rat ion in Washing ton, it is “too early on to tell.” Pictured here is Mr. Strauss with Calumet Area Industrial Commission Executive Director Ted Stalnos. If you would like more information on the economy go to www.chicagofed.org or www.federalreserve. gov
