Post-Traumatic Stress Discussion

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 802, located at 5820 Hohman Ave is hosting their monthly meeting on Thursday April 7, 2016, with a special guest speaker Jim Chancellor. Chancellor was recent ly at t he Veterans Resource Fair that was hosted by Indiana University Northwest on February 18,2016, he spoke about PTSD and educating students on the severity of war. Chancellor will participate in the group discussions on Post-Traumatic Stress. The meeting will start 7 p.m., Chancellor said, “he learns something new at every meeting he attends.” He wants veterans to come and listen to other soldier’s stories and encourages them to share their own experiences. The meetings have members from all types of other affiliates that can help the veterans with issues and any other questions they have, like medical and compensation applications and how to get started with the process. If they can`t address their concerns they will point you in the right direction. Chancellor says, “the meetings are not just for veterans but the family members and the surrounding communities.” So come in and support the troops.

Recently, I was showing a home to a couple that has a large family. We have been on the hunt for a 4 bedroom home in their desired location for quite s ome t i me . W he n w e walked into a home with a large enclosed sunroom with a closet, the husband said “I hope they aren’t counting this as the 4 t h bedroom!” and it hit me how many houses we’ve seen that claimed to have 4 bedrooms and really did not. Here was a family that really needed 4 bedrooms, not 3 bedrooms and an office, not 3 bedrooms and an attic space you could build out, but 4 bedrooms. They’d seen it all in terms of creative advertising, and not surprisingly were getting a little jaded. As a real estate agent, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen vacant lots classified as single-family homes---“Oh, you want a house with that? ” Not to ment ion adver t ising features that did not even exist in a home. Illiana Heating & Air Conditioning Joins Forces With The Women’s Diagnostic Center To Help Fight Breast Cancer Illiana Heating & Air Conditioning owners Tom and Sue Krygsheld believe in taking care of their own and paying it forward along the way. During the month of October, the Krygshelds held their annual fundraiser to honor employee Shelley DeYoung, a breast cancer survivor. A portion of the proceeds from the business’ service calls were set aside to help other women benefit from early detection of breast cancer. Eight years after treatment, St. John resident DeYoung credits her recover y, in part, on her healthcare team at Community Hospital, the Women’s Diagnostic Center, and support from her employers – Illiana Heating and Air Conditioning. On behalf of their fundraising efforts, St. John’s Illiana Heating and Air Conditioning general manager Kevin Frump and installation manager Dan Krygsheld have presented a $4,395 check to Mary Nicholson, MD, medical director of the women’s center in Munster. The funding is earmarked for patients who don’t have insurance and need diagnostic imaging. “T h is generous donat ion w i l l help supplement a grant we have received from the Indiana Breast Cancer Awareness Trust that covers approximately 50 screening mammograms,” said Nicholson. “Early detected breast cancers can be treated successfully and this funding will enable us to serve many more with the care they need. and Air Conditioning, hold a fundraiser during October – Breast Cancer Awareness month. Proceeds from installs and service calls during the month go to an account set up through Community Hospital to help other local women – those without insurance and who otherwise couldn’t afford them - receive diagnostic imaging at the Women’s Diagnostic Center. Breast cancer is a disease that can be diagnosed early through routine mammography. The Women’s Diagnostic Center of Community Hospital offers digital mammography with same day results. With advances such as same-day results and coordination between area physicians, women can generally begin treatment for breast cancer within 10 days of diagnosis. Since 2011, the Krygshelds have provided donations to the Women’s Diagnostic Center as a result of their October fundraiser. Diagnostic imaging has been made available to women with that funding and more than one has turned out to be positive for breast cancer – providing care where there wouldn’t have been an opportunity otherwise. ANNA M. CAISON I n 2 01 2-13 a l l o f t h e w e a t h e r forecasters in the Chicago area predicted t h a t w i nt e r w ou ld b e f i l le d w it h dangerous blizzards and snow storms; “worse than what we’ve seen in years!” I just love it when God confounds our trust in all of our modern technology. In honor of forecasters’ predicted March 3, 2016 snow fall, I resubmit the following: “Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning? Who told the ocean you can only come this far? And who showed the moon where to hide till evening? Whose words alone can catch a falling star? Well I know my Redeemer lives, I know my Redeemer lives. All of creation testifies, this life within me cries, I know my Redeemer lives.” My Redeemer Lives by Nicole C. Mullins Everyday I get up early to witness the marvel of sunrise. Today, high above the roof tops across from my perch behind the picture window in my living room, I watched as the sky shed its dark blue covering revealing shades of deep rose, green and yellow-orange colors. The lawn was covered with a blanket of untouched snow. The tall evergreen trees and shrubs that stood guard in the front of the house looked majestic and elegant dressed in its garments of pure white. And for the next 15 minutes, everything lay in quiet praise

before the creator. Scripture (Romans 1:18-32) tells us that the truth of God’s existence, His character and divine nature is seen in the things He created. But man, in his quest to rule himself, rejected God and His plan for humanit y. The result of man’s defection from God is seen in the depravity of our society. God in His love for man has provided a way back to Him through the life of His son Jesus. Listen to the rest of the words of Nicole Mullins’ song, My Redeemer Lives. “The very same God that spins things in orbit, runs to the weary, the worn and the weak, And the same gentle hands that hold me when I’m broken, they conquered death to bring me victory. He lives to take away my shame, and He lives forever I’ll proclaim That the payment for my sins, was the precious life He gave, And now He’s alive and there’s an empty grave! I know my Redeemer lives; I know my Redeemer lives. Let all creation testify, let this life within me cry, I know my Redeemer lives.” For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Rakich taught Wee Folk Gym and Swim, teaching kids how to swim and play gym. Throughout the years, Rakich worked her way up. Rakich use to do inventory for the 2004 Honda Civic Sedan LX. Outreach To Those Without Shelter - Let Love Flow

Friends of Faith, Inc. located in Lansing, Illinois, hosted a community outreach event entitled, “Let Love Flow” on February 27, 2016. The event took place on the streets of Chicago, Illinois from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Danielle Brown, president of Friends of Faith, Inc. stated that “it was put on my heart the 1st week of January 2016 to help those that are without shelter. February is typically a month where we celebrate love – with Valentine’s Day; therefore I wanted to Let Love Flow to those without shelter whom after the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are often forgotten. I called the board and everyone was excited and motivated to get started!” We received donations from Target in Munster, Indiana,

Family Dollar Corporation, Sam’s Club in Lansing, and Ultra Foods in Lansing. Board Members and Volunteers donated their time and helped distribute essential care packages to men and women without shelter. The essential care packages included; toiletries, hats, non-perishable food, and a note of encouragement. The event was a success; many were receptive and gracious for the outreach! “We are extremely blessed to have partnerships with Family Dollar, Target, Sam’s Club, and Ultra Foods and be able to help those without shelter…we wish we could have served more people,” says Brown. Friends of Faith, Inc. is a 501c3 tax-exempt not-for-profit organization whose mission is to encourage those that lack

Civil Air Patrol’s Thunder Composite Squadron Awards

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We’re selling our house after spending $150K on a complete remodel. The place is in excellent shape, but the buyers’ home inspect ion repor t was hideous! The inspector said the toilets are loose and need new seals, but they were installed less than a year ago, and we can’t budge them. He also said the framing is rotted under the house, but we’ve had all of that repaired. When we asked why there were no foundation photos in the report, he said he “didn’t want to get his camera dirty.” We think the inspector wrote a bad report to help the buyers negotiate a lower price. Another related problem is that we wanted to be home during this inspection, but the buyers’ agent said it was illegal for us to be in t he house when t he inspect ion was being done. This is such a mess, but we don’t know what to do. W hat do you recommend? Answer: If the home inspector’s findings are questionable, you should state your concerns in writing to the buyers, and the inspector should verify his findings with photos. If he doesn’t want to get his camera dirty, he should cover it with a plastic bag while he is under the house, or perhaps he can borrow your camera.

Either way, he should show exactly what he saw regarding the alleged wood rot. It is also wise to hire your own home inspector to provide a second opinion of the property’s condition. If the reports agree, you can have the defects repaired. It they differ, the one who’s finding agree with the photos wins. If the buyers back out of the deal, the second inspection report will help to provide disclosure to future buyers. As for the Realtor: The idea that it is illegal for you to be in your own home during a home inspection is preposterous. It is your home. You own it. You have the right to be there any time you want, regardless of home inspections or other circumstances. The agent can request that you not be home during the inspection, but no one can legally require you to leave your home. Unit Commander, Major Gary Sprigg and 2ndLt Kenneth Hodge ________________________

On Ja nua r y 15t h, Civ i l A i r Pat rol’s Thunder Composite Squadron members Carter Steinweg and Kenneth Hodge, both of La nsing, reached top awa rds at t he annual Group 2 Military Ball held in Orland Park, IL. Each year, both a Cadet and an adult member are nominated by their Unit Commander for an award recognizing the top “Cadet of the Year” and “Senior Member of the Year” based on their achievements during the previous year. Ca r ter Stei nweg w a s aw a rde d t he “Cadet of the Year” for Thunder Composite Squadron by his Unit Commander, Major Gary Sprigg. Steinweg, who joined in 2014, has served as an example for the other youth in the program. He has steadily progressed through the program, participated in every training opportunity which has qualified him to be able to join in “search and rescue” missions for downed aircraft or missing persons and, most recently, assumed the duty position of First Sergeant. Ken net h Ho d ge w a s aw a rde d t he “Senior Member of the Year” for Thunder Composite Squadron in recognition of his

numerous contributions to the Unit since joining just last year. Hodge has taken the reins for recruiting for the Unit, established a fundraising program with Wreaths Across America and spear-headed creating a team for the annual CyberPatriot competition held nat ionw ide by t he A i r Force Association. Under Hodge, the team from Thunder Composite Squadron advanced to the State finals in its first year. The Civil Air Patrol “Cadet Program,” one of three aspects of the organization, is geared at teaching today’s youth to be “leaders of tomorrow.” Adult members, like Hodge, help lay the foundation for the program and Cadet members, like Steinweg, not only learn from them but then use those skills to teach the new members that join the Unit. She should call her insurance company and the hospital to ask about this possible mix up. If I am correct and she is covered, her worry and stress will go away. Then she and the baby won’t worry,” I explained to my friend. Two day s later, my friend phoned me to tell me that I was absolutely correct. It was just a mix up. His sister did have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois and was covered for a delivery at the closest hospital to her which was in Indiana. He told me that his sister felt much better now. Thornton Township Celebrates Black History Month

Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli stressed the importance of creating a safer township community based on building mutual respect through its news Faith, Dignity and Respect Initiative that was launched last fall. __________________________

Keynote speaker Donna Manteca spoke about the importance of being positive role models for children and youth and instilling in them values that will help guide their lives. __________________________

Residents of Thornton Tow nship ca me toget her for a celebrat ion of A f r ica n h istor y during the annual Black History Month program sponsored by the township and held on February 26. T he prog r a m foc u s e d on Re -D e f i n i n g t he V i l l a ge a nd feat u red per for ma nces by t he Najwa Da nce Cor ps a nd New Generation of Men. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli said now is the time to re-define the village and widen its scope to include all of the communities in the township. Last September a delegation from the township traveled to Charleston, South Carolina on a fact-finding mission to discover why violence did not break out in the wake of the murder of seven members of the Emanuel AME Church in a crime of racial hatred. They discovered that it was the members’ faith in God and in each ot her t hat promoted continued peace. It was also evident that there was mutual respect between the community and the police department. W hile investing internationally offers some advantages, it also carries some specific risks. Sherry had been in Memory Care there for several years. Readers of N 2 N have been reading about Sherry and her late husband Bob Loncar for years now. She was a gifted artist and designer and a longtime volunteer at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey where she was one of the founders of a substance abuse recovery group. She lost her husband Bob three years ago and in the 1980’s both Bob and Sherry lost their only son Mark in an auto accident. Vowing to make sense and some good of her son’s death, Sherr y devoted hersel f towa rd helpi ng ot hers serving tirelessly at Ingalls and in her own home offering hope and solace to those similarly grieving and afflicted individuals. She leaves behind her husbands family, most notably her nephew Edward Maris and his family who provided for her care since Bob’s passing. Sherry was a vibrant, compassionate lady who lived a full and rich life. She was going on 88 years this April. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. May Sherry Loncar Rest in Peace.
