School Board 205 Candidates Receive Endorsement The team of 5 candidates running for School District 205 has received a momentum building endorsement in their campaign. On Tuesday March 3rd, Thornton Township Supervisor, Frank M. Zuccarelli threw his support behind the team of candidates. District 205 covers the high schools of Thornwood in South Holland, Thornridge in Dolton, and Thornton in Harvey. Over 5,000 students attend these schools, and all 3 schools have a rich history of strong academics, sports, career, and college prep. Several programs include the Navistar Progam, the United Nations Summer Leadership Academy, Pre-Pharmacy Program, and Summer College & Career Camps. District 205 also partners with South Suburban College on many levels to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college. The election will be held on April 7, and the candidates are hard at work getting their message out to the community. Five board seats are up for election in April, which gives the community a unique opportunity to get involved in the direction of District 205 for L-R Ray Banks, Sarah Chiestder, Frank M. GSU Center Presents Acclaimed Dance Theatre Production Addressing Violence Hip-hop and ballet? The music of OutKast and Michael Jackson. The 1920’s and the 1980’s. These odd couples combine to create an undeniably unique performing arts experience –and one with a message about violence. The Cotton Mouth Club, presented by Chicago Dance Crash, brings its characteristic fusion of dance styles, known widely on the Chicago contemporary dance scene, to GSU’s Center for Performing Arts on March 27 at 8 p.m. The Cotton Mouth Club, a time-traveling fable of hot jazz, romance, smoldering street violence and personal redemption, uses hip hop, ballet, jazz, swing, acrobatics, breakdance, and contemporary dance styles to spin a saga of choice between a familiar world of urban violence or personal awakening. The first act is set in an era of hot jazz and silicon smooth swing, reminiscent of Outkast’s “Idlewild” where a couple is caught in the middle of rival gangs of moonshine-making boys. Then Chicago Dance Crash pops, locks, and weaves its way through dueling eras, rebooting the same collision course in an era fueled by B-Boys breakdancing to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, for two acts, two worlds, and one timeless story. Do you ever consult a map? Your GPS, computer, phone or paper map pr ov ide s a pic t u r e of where you are and where you want to be. Maps are useful for transportation, but what about you r business and your life? You r d a i l y le a der s h ip creates a route for you and those you inf luence. Do you have a map to help you get where you want your leadership to ta ke you? Business success, life milestones, and key relat ionsh ips won’t go fa r w it hout mapping a trajectory and following it. So write out a real map, on paper! Start with point A (where you a re now) and place point B (where you want to be; maybe there are several points B) at the other end of the paper. The la rge bla n k space in between is where you create the map. You actually write down steps and goals, using arrows a nd d raw i ngs to show connections. Use a pencil, because there are many choices and changes to be made in determining your route. Get you r map on paper. Intentionally direct your life. Receiving good advice is wise; however, you must make your own choices a nd be sure of them. Adult Volunteer Literacy Program Seeking Volunteer Tutors South Suburban College is seeking tutors and participants for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Tutoring Program. The program is structured to train volu nteers to become one-on-one tutors for adu lts in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes t he development of phonetic reading skills combined w it h com mu n icat ion sk i l ls. SSC is encouraging residents to take this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program. FUTURE FBI AGENT STARTS OUT AS COLDWELL BANKER SECRETARY: Longtime Coldwell Banker Secretary Kaitlyn McCabe, of Crown Point, Indiana, currently an undergraduate senior at Purdue University Calumet, has her sights set on becoming on a statistical data analyst with the FBI. Her career path is just beginning with an expected graduation date of Fall, 2015. Kaitlyn will receive her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with minors in Business Management and Finance. It has been a long road filled with numbers and theory, but it has been a road she enjoyed. “Numbers have always come naturally to me,” Kaitlyn explained recently. “And, as a project for my last two semesters, I have been conducting research with my mentoring professor on Time Series Analysis and Forecasting which is a look at data over a period of time. With forecasting it is possible to take these kinds of data and formulate a working model to predict future outcomes.” Kaitlyn notes that she has” always had an interest in finance and time series analysis is a great avenue to apply this interest,” concluding, “My dream job would be to work for the FBI, so I have a lot of studying ahead of me.” This brainy and beautiful young lady is aiming high and something tells us she is going to cut a wide swath in the area of business, finance and law enforcement!
