Warts are a bump in the skin characterized by pain with squeezing of the wart. They are caused by a virus which invades the individual cells of the skin. There have been many treatments available through the years ranging from voodoo to laser surgery, including use of acids and burning out the wart. Therefore, the treatment should be done with the patients lifestyle in mind. If you have any questions concerning warts or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

MIKE BUDER W h i le per for m i ng a MARKET UPDATE CALL with one of my sellers he said, “You keep telling us that our price is too high. Besides reducing the price what else can we do to attract more buyers? Since we bought in 2005 we’ve done so much work, we’ve put many improvements i nto t he house. W H AT OTHER RE ALTOR TRICKS DO YOU H AV E TO ATTR ACT BUYERS?” I said to my seller “Let’s pretend t hat I have 2 American eagle gold coins. They are a commodit y, just like your home. I’m going to lay them both on the table. They are each 1 perfect ounce of solid gold (lets ignore today’s actual gold prices because unlike housing the price of gold is trading higher than its historical average. Let’s pretend that gold has been hit just like the housing market. So, the first coin I bought at the peak of the market in 2005 for $1,500. The second coin I bought last year for $800 almost half the price. And today, gold (for the sake of our i l lust rat ion) is t rad i ng for $ 900 per ounce. So, I k now, t hat in today’s ma rket I ca n sel l bot h coins for $900 each. On the second coin, I’d make a $100 profit. But on the first coin, I’m going to lose $ 600. Is there any thing in my bag of tricks that

I could use t hat would cause someone, anyone, to be willing to pay me $1,500 or more, for t hat f i rst coin? Anything at all that you can think of? I don’t think so, after all they can get lots of gold coins just like it for only $900. Gold is a commodity, just like your home. There are lots of homes, just like yours for significantly less than you’re a sk i ng. T here’s no a mou nt of Re a ltor t r i c k s , n o a m ou nt of open houses, no amount of color brochu res, no a mou nt of c ater i ng at the next brokers tour, no a mou nt of sk y w r it i ng, bi l l b o a r d s , pr i nt a d s , v irtua l tours or buyer’s agent bonuses that w ill convince someone to pay us $1,500, when they can buy one of equal value for only $ 900. “Now, about that price adjustment.” If you are looking to buy or sel l rea l estate ca ll Mike Buder at RE/ MAX 2000 (708) 418-4444, E -m a i l : m i k e b u d e r @ r em a x . ne t , Web s it e : w w w.BuderHomes. com. Competent Communication: Keys to Building and Sustaining Professional Relationships

Real Estate Specialists

www.myshopper.biz/columnists/

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Five Competencies of EI and several proven strategies to promote and strengthen EI. Strong EI skills significantly increase the likelihood of business success.

The South Suburban College Business & Career Institute (BCI) presents a Breakfast with BCI Workshop entitled, Competent Communicat ion: Keys to Bui lding a nd Sustaining Professional Relationships Parts 2 & 3. BCI is encouraging attendees to benefit from these excellent workshops even if they didn’t attend Part 1 which addressed several communication topics. Part 2 takes place March 25th and Part 3 will take place on April 29th. All workshops will be held in the South Suburban College MB Financial Bank Business Suite from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon (check-in and continental breakfast to begin at 8:30 a.m.). Relationships drive the success in our businesses and our communication skills in turn, drive our relationships. W hen c om mu n i c a t i on i s p o or l y e x e c u t e d , relationships suffer, putting our business in jeopardy. The Business & Career Institute can teach you the skills to strengthen your communication approach, starting with these upcoming workshops:

Question: We’re currently trying to buy a home. We have a purchase agreement which says all the appliances in the home, the washer, dryer, etc. are to stay. We took our parents over to the house today, and looking through the window, we could see the items had been removed, including all appliances, except the dishwasher. What kind of rights do we have in this case?

Part 3 –Wednesday, April 29th Author/Speaker Mary Erlain will facilitate t h i s w ork s hop, fo c u si ng on t he f i v e generations employed in t he A merican work force, each w it h a set of dif fering experiences and styles. She will discuss modes of communication, management, work ethic, technology, buying styles and advertising. This workshop encourages employees to explore ways to improve their communication by taking into account our generational diversity that exists in business today.

Answer: You have the right to enforce your agreement. If the property was to be sold with given appliances, and if those appliances were clearly listed in the sale agreement, then the appliances are to stay. The sellers need to return the appliances or purchase new ones. Another way to enforce the agreement is to require compensation for replacement appliances at closing. This all could mean the sellers are out more money -- but that’s not your problem. For details speak with your broker or attorney. *********** Question: I’m considering the purchase a home I cannot afford. At this time, I can afford around $60,000 -- basically a home that’s in need of repair. The house that I want is $219,000. I do not know if either choice is acceptable. I obviously do not want to live at either choice for very long (no more than three years). Should I take the plunge and get in the game now, or

T he c ost of bot h w ork shops w it h continental breakfast is $85 (prior RSVP and payment required), $49 for each individual workshop, or $59 at the door. The MB Financial Bank Business Suite is on t he 1st f loor of SSC’s Main Campus, located at 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, Illinois.

Part 2 –Wednesday, March 25th BCI’s own Alexandra Glumac will address the critical skill of Emotional Intelligence (EI)–our ability to use emotions intelligently and appropriately in different situations. She will cover Four Functions of EI, the

should I save up money and do things the “traditional way.” A n s w er : T h e r e i s n o c h oi c e . You cannot buy a property which is three times beyond what you can afford. No legitimate lender will provide financing. Such a purchase has a huge chance of leading to foreclosure and bankruptcy. Even if you ca n ma ke t he mor tgage payments, what about taxes, utilities and repairs? W hat you should do is to work at saving more and increasing your income. Also, spend more time learning about real estate in general as well as the specific trends in your local community. No less important, buying a home with the intent of selling in three years could be a disaster. It costs money to acquire real estate and money to sell, so even if you get a higher price you could have an actual cash loss on the sale. School Board 205 Candidates Receive Endorsement The team of 5 candidates running for School District 205 has received a momentum building endorsement in their campaign. On Tuesday March 3rd, Thornton Township Supervisor, Frank M. Zuccarelli threw his support behind the team of candidates. District 205 covers the high schools of Thornwood in South Holland, Thornridge in Dolton, and Thornton in Harvey. Over 5,000 students attend these schools, and all 3 schools have a rich history of strong academics, sports, career, and college prep. Several programs include the Navistar Progam, the United Nations Summer Leadership Academy, Pre-Pharmacy Program, and Summer College & Career Camps. District 205 also partners with South Suburban College on many levels to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college. The election will be held on April 7, and the candidates are hard at work getting their message out to the community. Five board seats are up for election in April, which gives the community a unique opportunity to get involved in the direction of District 205 for L-R Ray Banks, Sarah Chiestder, Frank M. Zuccarelli, Annette Whittington, Nina Graham, Albert Butler the next four years. Their platform of ‘Children First’ is resonating with the community who realize how important a well-run school district is. Many community leaders and elected officials including State Rep Thaddeus Jones, and South Holland Mayor Don De Graff are supporting this team of candidates. The slate includes Ray Banks, Al Butler, Sarah Chiestder, Nina Graham, and Annette Whittington. They each bring a unique set of talents and abilities to the board, and together they pledged to form a team that will lead District 205 into a bright future. In the coming weeks, the candidates will be informing the community of their qualifications to lead District 205. A brief introduction of the candidates is as follows: Ray Banks— Ray is Executive Director of Restoration Ministries in Harvey. This non-profit organization provides help and hope to many in our community who need a helping hand. Albert Butler—Al is a 30 year resident of Dolton and has taught for 19 years at Thornwood High School. Al teaches African American History and volunteers his time to make sure each District 205 student is equipped for success. Sarah Chiestder—Sarah is a graduate of Thornridge HS, and mother to 3 D205 graduates. Sarah is a business owner in Harvey, IL. Nina Graham—Nina has over 30 years teaching experience in a Harvey School District, and has served on a South Holland School Board for over 15 years. Annette Whittington—Annette has served on the Parent Advisor Board at D205, as well as the Human Relations Commission at Thornton Township. Her 3 children all graduated from D205. PATRICIA EIDAM (Patty) Independent Candidate for Lansing Village Trustee I moved to Lansing in 1979 when I was hired as a police officer and paramedic. I fell in love with Lansing immediately and take pride in being actively involved in dozens of positive activities in our community for over 35 years.

page 12

ACHIEVEMENTS & ACCOLADES

I have been married to my husband Bud for 32 years. We raised our four children here. I know giving back to my community is the best way to make it better. I enjoy volunteering and have been involved in many Lansing organizations including PTA, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Booster Club, Police Cadets, Historical Society and many more.

Lansing Village Clerk 2009 - 2013

During my eight years as Lansing Village Trustee and four years as Village Clerk I worked hard to be a strong voice for residents and village employees. I convinced the former Mayor and Trustees to help me with Lansing’s first public art project in 2005. That project, ‘Tri Motors in Plane View’, not only earned $60,000 to help restore our historic Ford Hangar but also involved 4000 grade school children and dozens of local churches, businesses and service organizations.

MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES W W II housew ife Lu Buetow took a little vacation away from her lonely Chicago apartment. Her husba nd had been away at wa r for over a year, and she thought a few days with old friends would be nice. I hope she didn’t eat too much food on that trip though. Her husband Bob likes a shipshape wife. In this week’s letter, Bob is concerned about Lu’s diet. He tells her to keep the candy BUT…not to let it make her fat. Well what’s a vacation without some good food and candy? By the time she received this letter, I bet she was already home f rom vacat ion…a nd thought… “uh-oh!” The Third Armored “Spearhead” Division Darmstadt, Germany Wednesday, July 25, 1945 My darling wifey, To d a y m y l u c k improved a little because I got the letter you wrote in Danville on the seventeenth. According to the numbers on your letters you only wrote one air-mail letter between the 12th and the 17th— one I haven’t received yet. Maybe you wrote V-mail letters on the other nights— or perhaps you were too busy to write. No, I don’t think you’d better send those things you have for me because it takes so long for packages t o g et h e re . K e e p th e Dolton 3-bdrm. Apt. $1,100/mo. cigarettes and other stuff for me until I get back home. I imagine it must be rather nice in a way, to go back that way to Danville and see old friends and places. Yes, darling, we had loads of fun while we were in Hershey, and we’ll have even more fun when we’re finally back together again. Go ahead and eat the candy you were saving for me so that it won’t get stale. However, don’t let it make you fat—I still want fellows to turn around and look at your lovely shape when we’re out walking together. You never did answer my question about whether or n ot y ou w e re st ill following your diet, or did you just diplomatically overlook that question, honey? It’s been pretty warm here lately, but I’d rather have it that way than raining. Time to sign off again, with all my love and oodles of kisses. GSU Center Presents Acclaimed Dance Theatre Production Addressing Violence Hip-hop and ballet? The music of OutKast and Michael Jackson. The 1920’s and the 1980’s. These odd couples combine to create an undeniably unique performing arts experience –and one with a message about violence. The Cotton Mouth Club, presented by Chicago Dance Crash, brings its characteristic fusion of dance styles, known widely on the Chicago contemporary dance scene, to GSU’s Center for Performing Arts on March 27 at 8 p.m. The Cotton Mouth Club, a time-traveling fable of hot jazz, romance, smoldering street violence and personal redemption, uses hip hop, ballet, jazz, swing, acrobatics, breakdance, and contemporary dance styles to spin a saga of choice between a familiar world of urban violence or personal awakening. The first act is set in an era of hot jazz and silicon smooth swing, reminiscent of Outkast’s “Idlewild” where a couple is caught in the middle of rival gangs of moonshine-making boys. Then Chicago Dance Crash pops, locks, and weaves its way through dueling eras, rebooting the same collision course in an era fueled by B-Boys breakdancing to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, for two acts, two worlds, and one timeless story. Tickets are only $25 for adults and $10 for students with valid I.D. Adults 65+ save $5.

Chicago Reader calls “The Cotton Mouth Club”, as “...an 85-minute miracle of powerhouse dance.” The Cotton Mouth Club is part of the Center’s Made in Chicago series, generously supported by The Chicago Community Trust. A portion of The Center’s programming is also supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Come for the Show, Stay for the Discussion & the Art The GSU Center is presenting this production as part of a National Endowment for the Arts project: Art RisingEngaging the Community in Response to Violence. Pre-show, GSU will be showcasing a visual arts exhibit of artwork by area high school students addressing violence. Post-show, a panel of community leaders including Chicago Dance Crash Artistic Director, Jessica Deahr, will discuss the issues of violence impacting our neighborhoods. The panel will be moderated by GSU Restorative Justice Professors Joao Salm and Jordan Nowotny. What the Critics Say “Choreog rapher Jessica Dea hr does a ter r if ic job throughout, blending styles from hip hop to ballet seamlessly while making bold use of the dancers’ proximity to the viewers and building in dazzling little tricks all the way through.” (Chicago Tribune)

Mommy’s Haven “What we want is for women to become the mothers the Lord has always intended them to be,” said Mommy’s Haven Founder Tracie Moldenhaur. Even without a home of their own, Mommy’s Haven continues to fight for what they believe in. The organization will offer women, who have no support during and after pregnancy, an alternative to abortion. Mommy’s Haven is in the middle of a fundraising campaign in hopes of purchasing a home in Lake County large enough to house five women and provide office space for staff and volunteers. “In the past we would find good homes to take the women in,” said Moldenhaur. However, she insists that the organization cou ld cont r ibute more to t he pro-l i fe community through their own maternity residence. Outside of providing the women with South Holland House, 4 bed, 1 1/2 bath, basement, no pets/smoking, move in ready, $1,250.00/month, tenant pays utilities, $1,700.00 sec. deposit. 708946-0501 leave message

shelter, food, clothing, and a supportive community, Mommy’s Haven will offer free services. These services include, but are not limited to, job development and placement, ch i ldca re, educat ion about pa rent ing, adoption, and childbirth, knowledge of state programs, and transportation. The ultimate goal of Mommy’s Haven is to “save the lives of the unborn by changing and restoring families within an atmosphere of hope and healing,” stated Moldenhaur. Mommy’s Haven will welcome women, ages 18 and over, who are pregnant and have nowhere to turn. They will offer these women the opportunity to choose life for their unborn baby. The organization will provide a safe, free-of-charge home to single pregnant women who are feeling helpless and hopeless while facing an unplanned pregnancy.

“Nothing can be beautiful which is not true.” “In order that people may be happy in their work,

these three they must be fit for it; they must not do things are too much of it; and they must have a needed: sense of success in it.”

“When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.” “It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that’s all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

FUTURE FBI AGENT STARTS OUT AS COLDWELL BANKER SECRETARY: Longtime Coldwell Banker Secretary Kaitlyn McCabe, of Crown Point, Indiana, currently an undergraduate senior at Purdue University Calumet, has her sights set on becoming on a statistical data analyst with the FBI. Her career path is just beginning with an expected graduation date of Fall, 2015. Kaitlyn will receive her bachelor’s degree in Mathematics with minors in Business Management and Finance. It has been a long road filled with numbers and theory, but it has been a road she enjoyed. “Numbers have always come naturally to me,” Kaitlyn explained recently. “And, as a project for my last two semesters, I have been conducting research with my mentoring professor on Time Series Analysis and Forecasting which is a look at data over a period of time. With forecasting it is possible to take these kinds of data and formulate a working model to predict future outcomes.” Kaitlyn notes that she has” always had an interest in finance and time series analysis is a great avenue to apply this interest,” concluding, “My dream job would be to work for the FBI, so I have a lot of studying ahead of me.” This brainy and beautiful young lady is aiming high and something tells us she is going to cut a wide swath in the area of business, finance and law enforcement! Bravo Kaitlyn McCabe! *** RUNNERS TAKE NOTE-RESTORATION M I N I S T R I E S H A S G UA R A N T E E D SPOTS FOR THE 2015 BANK OF AMERICAN CHICAGO MARATHON TEAM: Registration for the 2015 Bank of America Chicago Marathon opens at noon on March 10th.
